FROM THE EDITOR
As we enter October, and the end of yet another school term it’s clear the year is flying by! Dare I remind you that Christmas is less than 100 days away? If you’re anything like me, you would agree that it only felt like yesterday when we were enjoying time with friends and family during the Festive season of 2013 and welcoming in 2014. Panthers Pride was loud and proud in the lead up to the finals. While it wasn’t to be this time, there was no doubt that the community came together as one to show their support and do Penrith proud. What an amazing community we live in. We have plenty of stories, events and local news to keep you up to date and informed this month. As the sun shines, so does local band ‘White with One’ - check out their story on page 7. Also this month, a timely reminder as the weather warms up, that planning to make a plan, is not a plan. Read more about ‘Fire Danger Ratings’ on page 8. Enjoy your Community News, and always appreciate what you have, before it turns into what you had.

Love your Enemy Jesus did not make up, ‘Love thy Neighbour’. It was already in the Old Testament (Leviticus 19:18). The revolutionary thing Jesus did was to extend the teaching to his enemy, when his society didn’t. 43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbour and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven; for He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. (Matthew 5:43-45 NIV) Jesus also told the parable of the Good Samaritan, which extended the meaning of ‘neighbour’ to the enemy (Luke 10:25-37). The Jews and Samaritans hated one another (eg John 4:9). Yet it was the Samaritan, the hated foreigner, who showed kindness to the Jew in need, while the Jewish religious leaders walked by their fellow countrymen. The enemy can and indeed must be the neighbour, who then is to be loved. God the Father shows us this love every day when he sends his kindness and love on all people, whether they have regard for him or not. Jesus, God the Son, himself showed this love to the Samaritan woman at the well, when he offered her eternal life (John 4). The ultimate demonstration of ‘love for enemies’ was when Jesus went to the cross (Romans 5:8). It was while

we were God’s enemies that those of us who believe in Christ were reconciled to God through the death of his Son (Romans 5:10). This is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and gave his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins (1 John 4:10) We have big enemies and little enemies. Big enemies want to behead us and blow us up if we don’t do what we want. We love them by praying for them, not personally taking revenge but leaving room for God’s wrath and the State to exercise justice, not giving way to fear, pursuing and speaking the truth, and showing whatever kindness we can, even if they don’t deserve it. Little enemies are those people we don’t really get on with, whom we rub up against every day. Maybe they are members of your family, or people you work or study with. We love our little enemies by being long suffering, patient, kind, tolerant and other person centred. May we put this teaching of Jesus into practice. Pastor’s Corner Personally I love reading stories about people, who overcome challenges and go onto achieving success in all sorts of different aspects of life. Many of these people come from backgrounds where failure is common, and life has been tough, some would even say unfair. Yet somehow they drive through the difficulties and come out the other side. For that reason I love reading the Bible, and how Jesus deals with all different types of people and helps them to overcome their challenges. These stories inspire me to work harder at my faith, to deal with people in a more effective way, but at the same time they help me to understand my own shortcomings. One of my favourite stories is where one night, the disciples are out fishing. Jesus comes to them walking on the water. Initially the disciples were terrified, thinking that it was a ghost. But Jesus tells them “Take courage! It is I; don’t be afraid.” Peter always the impetuous one calls out to Jesus “Lord, if it’s you, tell me to come to you on the water.” Jesus replies, “Come”. Peter gets out of the boat, starts walking to Jesus and then he notices the waves and the wind and begins to sink, asking Jesus to save him. Jesus in turn reaches out his hand and catches him. I like this story for a few different reasons, because I think it

is part of our story. For many of us we boldly step out to do something, without always considering all the consequences. When circumstances don’t go the way we expect, doubt sets in, we ask ourselves did we make the wrong decision, or maybe we apportion blame on circumstances. Some of us are determined to make our plans work, so we strive harder. Others in turn give up and retreat to a safe place, where there is minimal risk. Possibly you already know which of these options you take. Personally, I have found that God always reaches out and saves me; I don’t mean by that the problem goes away, God doesn’t operate in that manner. But Jesus does give us a sense of order that guides us in overcoming the mess we have created, through bad decisions. It reminds me that I need to claim the promise of Philippians 4:13 “I can do everything through him who gives me strength.” It is never about my capability, because God has all the capacity to accomplish far more than I could ever imagine. It is about knowing His will and then having the courage in faith to step out. May I continue to encourage each of you to seek the Lord’s Will for your lives; then in faith step out boldly when He asks you to. Remembering to keep your eyes on the Son of the Living God, who is Jesus. If you would like to discuss this or any other matter with me, I am available to visit you at a mutually convenient time. Honesty and Self Esteem During a workshop I gave on self-esteem, participants did an exercise on integrity. They were asked to respond to this question; ‘If I had 10 percent more honesty in my life what would I say or do?’ Here is a sampling of the responses. • I would say openly to someone that they aggravate me and bother me. • I would tell my husband the truth about my small purchases. • I wouldn’t laugh at jokes that I find stupid or racist. • I would say ‘No’ when I want to say ’No’ • I wouldn’t be afraid to apologise and make amends to someone I’ve hurt. • I’d admit my weaknesses more easily • Jealousy wouldn’t keep me from giving compliments People who want to increase their self-esteem conquer their fear of showing who they really are, becoming more honest and more transparent with those around them.

Fire Danger Ratings Wollondilly Shire Council in partnership with the Wollondilly/ Wingecarribee Rural Fire Service encourages residents to always be aware of daily Bush Fire Danger Ratings. The Bush Fire Danger Ratings give you an indication of the possible consequences of a fire, if one was to start. Bush Fire Danger Ratings are based on predicted conditions such as temperature, humidity, wind and the dryness of the landscape. The higher the fire danger rating, the more dangerous the conditions.
Catastrophic • For your survival, leaving early is the only option. • Leave bush fire prone areas the night before or early in the day – do not just wait and see what happens. • Make a decision about when you will leave, where you will go, how you will get there and when you will return. • Homes are not designed to withstand fires in catastrophic conditions so you should leave early.
Extreme • Leaving early is the safest option for your survival. • If you are not prepared to the highest level, leave early in the day. • Only consider staying if you are prepared to the highest level – such as your home is specially designed, constructed or modified, and situated to withstand a fire, you are well prepared and can actively defend it if a fire starts. • Leaving early is the safest option for your survival.
8 October 2014 www.mulgoagazette.com.au
Severe • Well prepared homes that are actively defended can provide safety – but only stay if you are physically and mentally prepared to defend in these conditions. • If you’re not prepared, leave early in the day.
Very High, High & Low to Moderate Review your Bush Fire Survival Plan with your family. Keep yourself informed and monitor conditions. Be ready to act if necessary.

Holy Family Hits The Airwaves Holy Family Primary School Years 5 and 6 students were excited as they spoke clearly into bulbous microphones during the McCarthy Radio Show, on WOWFM 100.7 last month. Show host Craig Laffin from McCarthy Catholic College was stunned by the Holy Family students’ confidence ‘On Air’ and was appreciative of the very positive attitudes to their school. Students spoke especially of Holy Family PS being a ‘happy’ school. For Ammaleah ‘It is the best thing about the school’. Maree echoed this and added ‘Everyone is friendly with everyone else and this is important because we do lots of group work’. Sport was mentioned by several students, many of whom had represented the school during Gala Days. However, it was lunchtime sport which was most competitive! When Scott was asked about girls beating boys, he was firm in the opinion that ‘It rarely happens!’ The use of technology to aid learning was obviously also important and all students spoke of being competent in the use of computers, in research and to prepare work for submission. ‘Sometimes’ Guedy said, ‘We submit work using a computer’. While literacy and numeracy gained credit points from the students, Maree became enthusiastic when she outlined how creative arts was fun. ‘We make collages and do finger painting and our hands get covered in paint’! Craig Laffin told a story of making a mess when he was a schoolboy but the Holy Family students were adamant they never smeared each other with
paint! They did think the forthcoming ‘Fun Run’ would be ‘fun’ and were keen to explain how raised funds would be spent on equipment which would benefit all students. Principal Tim Vane-Tempest spoke proudly of the students and complimented them for their hard work and positive attitude to learning. He went on to thank his teachers for their professional expertise and thanked parents for their support and commitment. ‘You Holy Family students have been terrific tonight and I have really enjoyed hosting you on the McCarthy Radio Show’ said Craig Laffin. ‘Please come back after your FunRun and tell listeners how the fund raised money was spent’. ‘Fun’ was again mentioned by the Holy Family PS students, talking about taking part in the radio show. Bubbling and excited chatter followed as they all left the studio, which now seemed so empty and quiet!

Do you Have a Child who has Difficulty Calming Him or Herself? One of my boys would get very angry at times and needed some support to calm himself. I was concerned that if he didn’t learn the skills to calm himself, he would think that anger was an appropriate means of expressing himself. I didn’t want him taking his anger into adolescence and beyond. The following strategies are from the Second Step programme which I have taught in primary school. In the programme, children are told that they should do some deep breathing in situations where they find they are having strong feelings, such as being overexcited, angry, or upset. We tell kids that it’s ok to have strong feelings, but doing the first thing that comes into your head (like hitting or screaming at the other person) will not solve the problem. When we have strong feelings it can be hard to think about what to do. Calming down helps us to think again. It’s easier to calm down if we try as soon as we start to have a strong feeling. You can use ways to calm down in the classroom, at home, and in the playground. It also helps to get children to identify where they feel their anger (for example, tummy, head, hands). Support the child to locate where he or she feels the feeling (anger, sadness, distress, overexcited, etc) in his or her body. The answers I have heard from kids range from the feet (to run), the fists (to get ready to fight), the heart, the tummy, and the head. This one is for young children, up to 6 years of age. Put your hand on your tummy to check out how you are feeling, and l. Say “calm down” to yourself, using a slow voice 2. Take three deep belly breaths 3. Count to 4 slowly Your tummy is right where your belly button is. Putting your hand there helps you check in with how you’re feeling. It also makes sure you do the right kind of breathing to help calm down. The wrong way to do belly breathing is to puff up your chest, tense your muscles, take a noisy gasp of air, and hold your breath. The right way to do belly breathing, is to take a breath that makes your tummy move out when you breathe in, and in when you breathe out. Breathe in slowly through your nose and out through your mouth. It should be so quiet that you can’t hear it. It’s a good technique for parents to use as well! Many parents reported that their young children in the programme would coach them to do these things when they were showing signs of getting angry. Next month I’ll give you the techniques for children older than 6 years of age.

Four Simple Steps To Staying Safer This Season Tips To Help Your Family Family B ecome S wim S eason R eady Your Become Swim Season Ready ‘Is your family swim season ready? ’If the answer is less than ‘yes’, the consequences could be dire. “Aussies simply love the water. Yet sadly, accidental childhood drowning claims the greatest number of young lives than any other trauma, said Keryn Daley, from Dive In Swim Academy, in Penrith. In 2012/2013, 40 children between the ages of zero and 14, drowned in Australian waterways. But not all accidents prove fatal; one quarter of children admitted to hospital following a non-fatal drowning, will be left with a brain injury resulting in lifelong disabilities. However, industry experts, Swim Australia - the leaders in learn-to-swim and water safety - insist, drowning can potentially be prevented, by actively applying four simple steps: the EnergyAustralia SwimSAFER ‘Layers of Protection’. “Applied together, each layer helps supports the other. If one layer fails, the remaining active layers will ultimately kick in, potentially helping to save that child’s life, said Swim Australia CEO, Ross Gage.
1. Be Aware: Don’t let the kids out of your sight. 2. Be Secure: Keep fences and gates locked up tight. 3. Be Confident: Learn to Swim, and how to get to safety. 4. Be Prepared: Always have a plan in case of emergency. “Help prevent drowning any time, any where, any season by enrolling your kids in year round swimming lessons, never let them out of your sight when in or around water, and always practice the house rules: ‘I never go swimming without an adult, concluded, Ms Daley.

Loans for Vacant Land Whether buying land for an immediate build, as an investment or for a future dream home, a range of mortgages can finance a vacant-land purchase. If you are planning to build now, a construction loan might be the best option. Most lenders demand that building on a construction loan must start within a specified time, usually between one and three years, depending on which lender you use and whether the property will be owner-occupied or investment. This mortgage type allows you to draw down segments of the loan amount in stages, as they are needed – for the land purchase and then for the stages of construction – which saves you paying interest on the entire loan amount when you don’t need to be. If you want a loan for the land without any time pressures, a vacant land loan may be the best option. Most lenders also offer vacant land loans, and will go up to a 30-year loan term and finance up to 90 per cent of the land’s value. Some go as high as 97 per cent loan-to-valuation ratio (LVR). Lenders’ mortgage insurance (LMI) would still most likely be payable on any LVR higher than 80 or 85 per cent, depending on the lender. If you have stumbled across the perfect position for your dream home, future holiday getaway or retirement oasis, but aren’t ready to plan building it yet, speak to an expert about the different types of loans that can finance the purchase.

PAWS A WHILE With Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital 377 Wentworth Rd, Orchard Hills Ph: 4736 2027
Growth of the Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital Since purchasing the Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital 4.5 years ago, Camille and the team have worked steadily to grow the business. Starting off with 1 veterinarian and 4 nurses, Camille now employs 3 veterinarians (with a current advertisement for a 4th veterinarian), 6 fully qualified veterinary nurses, a Practice Manager, 2 trainee veterinary nurses and a kennel hand. Massive growth in 4.5 years from 5 staff to 13 staff! One of the unexpected bonuses of owning a business was creating 8 new local jobs! Each new team member provides a new skill set and knowledge base which we use to provide better care for your pets. New Practice Manager – Renai Renai has grown up in the Penrith area and has seen many changes over the years. After managing a local business for 12 years, Renai was delighted to combine her three greatest passions together: managing a business, customer service and her love for animals. Renai joined the team in August 2014 where she was warmly welcomed by all. Renai has 3 furbabies including: Tasha (Labrador x Staffy), Ally (Golden Labrador) and Cooper (a naughty young learning Labrador). Renai adores her pets and spends every spare minute with them, when she is not busy being a wife and mum to 4 adult children. Renai enjoys nothing more than spending time with her family, cooking, renovating and roadtrips. “I feel very fortunate to be a part of the team here at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital. New Trainee Veterinary Nurse – Lizzie Lizzie completed work experience at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital in June 2012. Lizzie then joined our team as a Kennel Hand
in June 2013. Lizzie is in the process of completing her Certificate II in Animal Science at TAFE, as well as her Higher School Certificate. She enjoys everything about being a Kennel Hand, learning lots and getting a head start on some nurse duties, as she wishes to go on to study Veterinary Nursing at TAFE. Lizzie has had many animals during her life time, at the moment she has two cats (Moo Cow and Missy), and a Labrador cross (Sonny). “After a week of work experience, I never thought only a year later would I be working here at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital, but I wouldn’t work anywhere else! Everyone here is always willing to help out and share their knowledge where ever possible. Lizzie was promoted to Trainee Veterinary Nurse in September 2014. New Trainee Veterinary Nurse – Jemma As a lifelong animal lover, Veterinary Nursing was an obvious career choice for Jemma, who joined the team at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital in September 2014. Having completed the Certificate II in Animal Studies in 2013, Jemma is currently completing her Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing at Richmond TAFE. Growing up on acreage, Jemma was surrounded by many dogs and horses, and was involved in the local Pony Club. Jemma continues to enjoy spending time with her 5 beautiful dogs, along with horseriding, cooking and spending time with family and friends. Jemma is grateful for the opportunity to work with the team at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital, and looks forward to increasing her skills in all areas of veterinary nursing. Please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital. Call 4736 2027 to make an appointment. Check us out on Facebook and online at www.orchardhillsvet.com.au.
