The proposed 27 houses development at Glenmore Heritage Golf Club has been refused by the Joint Regional Planning Panel.

The Sydney Catchment Authority is organising a special celebration event to mark the 50th anniversary of the opening of Warragamba Dam on Sunday 17 October. NSW Minister for Water and Member for Wollondilly Phil Costa said “Warragamba Dam’s idyllic picnic areas, sweeping views of the Burragorang Valley and impressive engineering have made it a hugely popular destination for Sydney families for generations. Since the areas surrounding the dam were reopened last year following a major upgrade, more than 100,000 visitors have flocked to the dam. “The exhibition features detailed displays about our dams and catchments, audio visual material, historic items and a cutting edge ‘drops of wisdom’ interactive table, which is the largest of its type in Australia. “It has been 50 years since Warragamba Dam was first opened, and this exhibition gives visitors a snapshot of its history, and an insight into the journey water takes from the time it falls in the catchments to the time it comes out of our taps as clean, healthy drinking water. The Warragamba Dam Visitor Centre is off Production Avenue, Warragamba, and is open every day from 10am to 4pm, except for Christmas and Good Friday.

Love, Homosexuality and Jesus On election night, Bob Brown, leader of the Green’s, declared that Australia would be ‘more loving’ as a result of the ‘Greenslide’ election result. Adam Brandt, the Green’s only Federal MP, declared his intention to introduce gay marriage legislation. In a past piece, I have argued that as Australians and as Christians we should be welcoming of people who come across the seas and share our land with genuine refugees. However, Scripture and Christianity is profoundly opposed to the vision of sexuality and marriage as propounded by the Greens. Jesus knows what love is. His coming and his action radically redefined love. ‘My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends’ (John 15:12-13 NIV). Later John would reflect on this and say: ‘This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and gave his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins’ (1 John 4:10 NIV). So Jesus, the Son of God, knows truly what love is. What did Jesus say about marriage and sex? ‘”Haven’t you read that at the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female,’ and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and

mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh. So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore, what God has joined together, let man not separate.” (Matthew 19:4-6 NIV) Marriage and sex is designed by God and Jesus as faithful, monogamous union between a man and a wife for life. This is reflected in Australian law where “marriage” means the union of a man and a woman to the exclusion of all others, voluntarily entered into for life: (CTH) Marriage Act 1961 s 5. Jesus viewed this as the only valid expression of sexual love. First century Jewish sexual ethics, while it deviated from God’s design in the matter of divorce (see Matthew 19), had been taught from the Law of Moses that homosexuality was against God’s will (Leviticus 18:22; 20:13). Jesus almost exclusively restricted his earthly teaching ministry to the Jews, and did not go to the surrounding Gentile nations (Matthew 10;5; 15:24; John 12:20). But after his resurrection, Jesus turned his attention to the non-Jewish nations. He chose a Jewish man named Paul, and Jesus sent him to the Gentiles ‘to open their eyes and turn them from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God’ (Acts 26:17 NIV). These nations did not have the Law of Moses, so homosexuality was accepted in these societies, amongst other practices. But Jesus’ messenger, Paul, turned them

from this. He taught that homosexual practices were contrary to God’s will (Romans 1:26-27). For example, the city of Corinth was a typical port city of the time. To ‘corinthianise’ meant to be sexually immoral. An analogy would be observers on Mardi Gras night saying, “Oh, they are out there ‘sydneying’ on Oxford Street”. Yet, this is what Paul, the person hand picked and sent by Jesus, said to the church in Corinth: ‘Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters no adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.’ (1 Corinthians 6:9-11 NIV) True love means challenging our sins, not condoning them. True love is dying for our sins, not giving us permission to continue in them. True love is forgiving our sins and turning us from them, not letting us die in them. I trust Jesus’ and Paul’s view of ‘love’ over that of Mr Brown. Matt Olliffe Rector, Anglican Parish of Mulgoa

David Arthur Dunbar 17 January 1957 - 11 August 2010 David was the youngest child of David and Phyllis Dunbar of Silverdale. Their eldest child Elizabeth died in 1996, leaving David three nephews, Russell, Timothy and Roger, and two nieces, Ellie-Mae and Tabitha. All David’s nephews and nieces are here today. David also had an older brother, William George. who sadly died in his infancy. It was David’s wish to be buried with William. Elizabeth and David both attended Warragamba Public School. David wasn’t a great academic, but he was good at making friends. He would ride his bicycle around Silverdale and Warragamba and eventually graduated to motorbikes. When he was 16, he competed in cross-country bike riding competitions. He was a very good rider and won many competitions. David had a collection of bikes and he would maintain the older ones himself. David also loved panel vans. He won a prize for his interior decorations of his Holden Kingswood Panel Van.

David worked in different jobs after he left school. and lived with his parents for almost all of his 53 years. David underwent 7 operations for his health problems and for the last two years, David had been unable to leave the house. During this time of pain and immobility, David maintained his love for his bikes and the Penrith Panthers but also developed a new love of cooking. He cooked muffins to send with his mum for church. In his exercise book labelled ‘Tucker’ he had a list of 31 favourite recipes, neatly handwritten with instructions. This was perhaps the only way David in his pain and immobility could serve his family. David is survived by his mother Phyllis, who has now buried her husband and all her children. Phyllis woiuld like to thank everyone for ther cards and flowers and support.

The Centre also received a grant to assist the Warrayites Band Night Project which is run in partnership with MTC Youth Connections, Community Links Wollondilly and the Warragamba Silverdale Neighbourhood Centre. The Group provides activities and social experiences to young people in the area to reduce boredom thus leading to risky behaviour. We would like to have young peo-

ple involved in the organising and planning of this night and would will be seeking local bands to perform in November 2010. For more information on the Youth group or to register your band please contact Michelle on 47741273.

Food Drive During September and October, the centre Centre is collecting tinned food and non-perishable household items to be distributed to those in need. Donations of any non perishable food, kitchen, bathroom or laundry items – such as canned food, pasta, sauce, breakfast cereal, dishwashing liquid, soaps and washing powder would be very much appreciated. Donations can be left at the Neighbourhood Centre. All donations will go to help people in our community that may be experiencing financial hardship or crisis. If you are a business owner and would be able to help in any way please contact Michelle on 4774 1273.

Organised By:

W

Cwarradale AA INC.

Congratulations to our Zone Athletics representatives who participated at the Nepean Zone Athletics carnival in mid August. The team of 35 students competed with energy and exhibited a great sense of fair play and camaraderie to the competitors from the other competing schools. From this carnival 6 students from Holy Family School qualified to participate at the Parramatta Diocesan Athletics Carnival held at Blacktown Olympic Park at Rooty Hill. Congratulations to Luke Gleeson, Brooke Hoban, Jack Hoban, Jay Kirk, Rhys Nelson and Nicholas Thornton who represented at Diocesan level. A special acknowledgement and best wishes to Luke Gleeson who qualified for the MacKillop Team and will compete at the State Catholic School’s trials later in September in Discuss and Shot Putt. In other news our Stage 3 students recently visited Canberra as part of their studies about Democracy. The visit included Parliament House, Australian Electoral Commission, Australian National Museum, War Memorial, Questacon and the Australian Institute of Sport. On the second day of the three excursion the group had a day to enjoy the snowfields, which was a first time experience for many of the students. Once again the students put into practice the three school rules at Holy Family – I Respect Myself, I Respect Others & I Respect the Environment. Stage 3 were exceptional with their behaviour and stood out as great ambassadors for our school. Congratulations to our Stage 3 students and teachers on a fantastic learning and social experience.

50th anniversary The anniversary event will include a formal ceremony and the unveiling a new memorial to those workers who died during construction of the dam. It will also include a range of activities throughout the day for the wider community to participate in. The SCA is committed to recognising the contribution of the dam builders, including those involved with clearing the valley before the dam construction began and those workers based at the McCann’s Island aggregate processing plant on the Nepean River. An important part of the day’s celebrations will be a reunion lunch for former workers who were involved in building the dam prior to its official opening in 1960. Former Water Board employees who worked on the construction of Warragamba Dam may contact the SCA on 4725 2540 or email madeleine.dignam@sca.nsw.gov.au. The SCA has managed to contact the families of these men, to notify them of the new memorial and invite them to be part of the ceremony to honour the workers who lost their lives. • George Miller, 44 years, miner – 25 July 1939 • Murdoch Currans, 57 years, pipe layer – 14 November 1939

How A Man Lived In Three Centuries by Roger French, Natural Health Society of Australia Local author Roger French has has updated his ‘Complete guide to Natural Health’. The book now has an index for easy reference and spells out a prescription for enjoying life free of pain and crippling, with tons of vitality and extended youthfulness, along with relative freedom from the fear of cancer, heart disease, stroke and other life-threatening conditions After almost dying of a heart attack at 34, Australian stockbroker, Eric Storm, mended his lifestyle ways to enjoy another 70 years free of illness, with the year 2000 being the final turning point of a legendary life across three centuries. Like most Australians, you may believe that illness is a normal part of life, and that after about 50 years of age, we are inevitably over the hill. Not so! Eric and thousands of oth-

er Australians, along with numerous primitive populations, have demonstrated that we can be well for life if we choose. A vast amount of research over the last century has explained why many earlier populations hardly knew illness … until they adopted the Western way of living. The comparison is graphically illustrated with photographs in this book. Illness and premature ageing are ‘diseases of civilisation’, that is, diseases of lifestyle. This means that most of us have virtually full control over whether quality of life is wretched or wonderful. We can choose to be free of health problems if we wish. Author, Roger French, when in his twenties was sick and tired of being tired and sick. This led him to abandon civil engineering and take up a career in Natural Health, which has included seven years as manager of the Hopewood Health Retreat at Wallacia, NSW, and the past 27 years as Executive Director and Health Director of the Natural Health Society of Australia.

By applying the guidelines presented, it is possible for most of us to revel in a quality of health that far exceeds our normal expectations. The book is available from the Wallacia newsagent and from the Natural Health Society office in Penrith, phone 4721 5056 or online from www.health. org.au

MOPS - Mothers Of Preschoolers Mums have an opportunity to develop friendships, share concerns, explore areas of creativity and benefit from teaching on a wide range of matters relevant to mothering. MOPS provides time out for mothers while children have a separate fun program called Moppets. Moppet children are lovingly cared for in an adjoining room (and outside if weather permits) by a dedicated team of carers. Children participate in planned activities suited to their skills and age group. Meetings are the last Wednesday of the month in Warragamba Anglican Church, but the next meeting is 22nd

September due to school holidays. The Trash & Treasure stall was successful in raising much needed funds for this special group. Thanks for the community support.
