A Night to Remember for Craig and Frances

Warragamba’s Charity

Saturday April 27, 2019 The local community came together last month to show their support for Sophie Mason and Grant Hoogenboom, raising over $10,000 for cancer charity Dreams2Live4 with a fantastic night of delicious food, great music and atmosphere at Settlers Mulgoa. Just over 100 family and friends attended the sold-out event to get behind Sophie, who lost husband Craig to cancer in April last year and Grant, who lost wife Frances to cancer last year also, and to raise much needed funds for Dreams2Live4. Joining them were Harry Wild (MC and DJ) and Collective Jam who entertained the crowd with their rock music. “Thank you to everyone that helped with the event. Most importantly, thank you to everyone that came along on the night. It was the love and support from these amazing people that made the event a success” said Sophie. “Sophie is amazing. The spirit and strength that she has in helping others is inspiring. She’s an incredible woman” praised Dreams2Live4 CEO, Louise Mahoney. “We are honoured that Sophie chose to support Dreams2Live4. We make dreams come true for adults living with metastatic cancer, meaning any cancer that has spread, aggressive brain cancer, relapsed lymphoma and relapsed leukaemia. These are all life limiting cancers. We help patient’s dreams come true every 48 hours with more than 450 referrals a year” stated Louise. With the afternoon sun shining, there were lots of stories shared about Craig and Frances and the impact they had on so many people’s lives. The rusty ute bar, a project that began with Craig’s vision, served cold drinks whilst the dunking machine gave people an opportunity to raise money and have a laugh. Sophie and the team plan to continue raising funds for Dreams2Live4 with different projects, after setting the goal to raise $20,000 this year. This will include an Outback Rally in July, starting in Mulgoa. For more information, visit Craig’s Bucket List on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/craigsbucketlist or to donate at www.gofundme.com/craigs-bucket-list. FAITH – ANGLICAN PARISH OF MULGOA Article Submitted by: Rev John Lavender | The Anglican Parish of Mulgoa | P: 47331635 W: anglicanparishmulgoa.com.au A: 43 St Thomas’ Road Mulgoa | Service Times: Sundays @ 9.30am

Real Faith What is faith? What does it mean to have faith in God? Is it a “leap of faith”? Is it “blind faith”? Sometimes those who have Christian faith are thought to be irrational people compared to the more “sensible” people who have done away with such silly superstitions as “faith in God”. Yet, we all have “faith”. We have faith the sun will rise in the morning. We have faith our car will start when you turn the key in the ignition and we are disappointed if the car won’t start, because based on the evidence and facts, this is what we expect. Christian faith is no different. In the Bibles New Testament book of Hebrews, the writer tells us that our faith should be centred on Jesus; “Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfector of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame and sat down at the right hand of God.” When you look at Jesus’ life, he was perfectly trustworthy, always working for our good and never for our harm. Christian faith, rather than “a leap of blind faith”, is actually faith in the facts and evidence around the birth, life, death and resurrection of Jesus. Real faith is never blind; it is always focussed on Jesus. It has been the experience of Christian people for 2000 years who have found this confident faith, life transforming and life renewing. This continues to be the experience of the people who call Mulgoa Anglican Church home.

You too can know and experience the wonderful difference that faith in the living Jesus can make to your life. We would love to see you so you can know this difference as well.

New Covered Outdoor Learning Area for Mulgoa Public School

Pastor’s Corner A friend of mine named John is facing a number of challenges. Over recent times, losing a younger brother and sister to cancer; and now both his son and his older brother have required treatment for melanoma; John’s wife also struggles with critical health issues. For John to find God’s peace in the midst of all these challenges, seems impossible. John’s view of God, is similar to many others in our community, he believes in God, but does not have a real personal intimate relationship with God, and does not experience any sense of peace or comfort in his current circumstances. One of my favourite verses of scripture is “And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:7). When I face times that are challenging, even chaotic, or I have uncertainty, my tendency is to think that once I overcome the challenge, I will experience peace, but God’s promise goes much further; God’s peace is delivered in the midst of those situations that challenge us. There is no promise here from God, to take away life’s challenges, but rather God protects us, whilst we go through them. By this I mean, that the promise God brings, is that he will protect and guard our hearts (emotions) and also our minds (thoughts), by doing so we receive peace in the midst of our circumstances. The peace that God offers us is not manufactured by us, it comes from relationship with the Living God. Our relationship with God is personal, many people I meet know about God, yet they do not know him personally; their views have often been shaped by past experiences, both positive and negative experiences. Jesus desires a personal relationship with us, he calls on us to come to him, to seek forgiveness, and he in turn restores our relationship with him. It is through this journey, that we receive the peace of God, and our hearts and minds are protected. My prayer is that each of us will know true peace, through relationship with Jesus Christ.

The new committee of the Wallacia Progress Association (WPA) have been very active in fighting the proposed development of Wallacia golf course for an 88,000 burial plot cemetery with all the ancillary roads and buildings. Penrith Council have been totally opposed to the project since the beginning, but the process was passed to the NSW Planning Department in June last year. The PCC report as well as all the assessments of the environmental impact, the problems with flooding, the traffic, noise, water pollution of Jerry’s Creek and the Nepean River, loss of green space and recreational facilities, the loss of habitat for several species of endangered bats and the biodiversity of the land, the social impact on the village lifestyle and the limitations of any future growth. The Catholic Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust, a division of the State Government, now owns the golf course as Crown land. The crematoria have been taken out of the application and the NSW Planning Department have recently recommended approval ‘in the public interest’. The final approval lies with the Independent Planning Commission and all residents are urged

For many years, the students of Mulgoa Public School have battled 40+ degree days, rain, hail and shine. Every day, students and teachers at Mulgoa Public School must battle the elements, often must cancel assemblies, presentation days, or special events, because they have no covered, protected area. “For too long, Mulgoa Public School has been overlooked by the Department of Education because it does not have the high enrolments of other schools” Tanya Davies said. “But all students, no matter where they live or go to school, should have access to the best possible infrastructure to give them the best start in life”. Last year, Tanya Davies along with Mulgoa Public School P&C President Vicky Penna began a petition, calling on the Minister for Education to fund a Covered Outdoor Leaning Area (COLA) for Mulgoa Public School. Over 300 people signed the petition calling on the Minister to ensure the COLA was delivered for this school. Last month, the Premier and Education Minister visited Mulgoa Public School. They announced that the school will benefit from a new COLA which will be completed by the first day of Term 2 this year, thanks to $162,000 in funding from the NSW Liberals and Nationals Government. “I am pleased to announce that because of the advocacy of the community, Mulgoa Public School will have a brand-new COLA by Term 2”. WHAT'S COOKING

Lucey’s Brave Cut for Charity

Colcannon with Guinness Stew Ingredients 50g (1/3 cup) plain flour 1kg gravy beef, cut into 3cm pieces 60ml (1/4 cup) olive oil 3 carrots, peeled, coarsely chopped 1 brown onion, halved, coarsely chopped 2 garlic cloves, crushed 2 tablespoons tomato paste 250ml (1 cup) Guinness beer 250ml (1 cup) beef stock 2 sprigs fresh thyme 2 dried bay leaves 1/4 cup coarsely chopped fresh continental parsley 2 teaspoons finely grated lemon rind Colcannon 1kg sebago potatoes, peeled, chopped 40g butter, chopped 1/4 (about 500g) savoy cabbage, hard core removed, coarsely chopped 4 green shallots, ends trimmed, thinly sliced 125ml (1/2 cup) milk Method 1. Preheat oven to 180°C. Place the flour in a bowl and season with salt and pepper. Add beef and turn to coat. 2. Heat half the oil in a large frying pan over medium-high heat. Add half the beef and cook for 2-5 minutes each side or until browned. Transfer to a 2.5L (10-cup) capacity ovenproof dish. Repeat with the remaining beef, reheating pan between batches. 3. Heat the remaining oil in the pan over medium-high heat. Add the carrot, onion and garlic and cook for 5 minutes or until the onion is soft. Add the tomato paste and cook for 1 minute. Add the Guinness, stock, thyme and bay leaves and bring to the boil. Transfer to the ovenproof dish. Bake, covered, for 2 hours or until meat is tender. Season with salt and pepper. 4. Meanwhile, to make the colcannon, cook the potato in a saucepan of boiling water for 15 minutes or until tender. Drain and return to pan. Use a potato masher to mash until smooth. Heat butter in a frying pan over medium heat until foaming. Add the cabbage and shallot and cook for 3-4 minutes or until tender (do not brown). Add the cabbage mixture and milk to the potato and stir to combine. Season with salt and pepper. 5. Divide the colcannon among serving plates. Top with the stew and sprinkle with parsley and lemon rind to serve.

Seven-year-old Lucey Jobson recently made the brave decision to get her long hair cut for a worthy cause, raising an amazing $1,152.21 for Variety the Children’s Charity Hair with Heart! The local Luddenham Public School student smashed her original goal of raising $500 and had 14 inches of her hair cut off at Insignia Hair and Day Spa in Penrith. “Lucey had quite long hair and she thought it would be a nice thing to do to give her hair back to a sick kid to make a wig” said Shea Jobson, Lucey’s Mother. When it comes to giving back to the community, the Jobson family also have another member who has previously raised valuable funds. Lucey’s brother Kade organised a lemonade stand a couple of years ago at Luddenham IGA, raising $800 for a friend’s family who were affected by cancer. “Lucey’s Father (Tim) and I couldn’t be prouder. We strongly believe in teaching our kids the importance of giving” Shea explained to the Mulgoa Valley Gazette. So, what does Lucey think about having her hair cut and her new hair style? “Lucey is loving her new short hair as it is much lighter and very trendy” smiled Shea. If you would like to donate your hair or would like more information about Variety the Children’s Charity Hair with Heart, visit https://everydayhero.com.au/event/hairwithheart. To get behind our local hero and support Lucey in her quest, you can still make a donation at https://hairwithheart. everydayhero.com/au/lucey-s-big-chop. “We would like to thank everyone who has donated and a special thank you to Amanda at Insignia Hair and Day Spa in Penrith, as she cut Lucey’s hair and styled it for free” ended Shea. Warragamba Welcomes Nick’s Deli and Grocery Warragamba has welcomed an exciting, new business to the Wollondilly Shire, with Nick’s Deli and Grocery opening its doors on the 1st of February. The local business, on Fourteenth Street, refitted the store that was previously occupied by Shop Sense in Warragamba. They sell a large range of Australian and Continental smallgoods, cheeses, fresh meats, bread, milk, assorted groceries and a variety of drinks. “I had a large deli for some 20 years in my previous business. I really enjoyed it and wanted to do it again. I called my new business Nick’s Deli and Grocery in respect to my father. He taught me everything I know” said David Logozzo, Nick’s Deli and Grocery Owner. “Warragamba is a great location with a great history. It’s very family and community minded. We have some fantastic restaurants, takeaways and an array of amazing small businesses right here. We were just lacking the convenience of the local deli, grocery and green grocer in our town” David told the Mulgoa Valley Gazette. Nick’s Deli and Grocery have a large range of cheeses that have been a hit with customers already. Especially, the Dutch Green Pesto Cheese. It’s green in colour and has a magnificent fresh, basil pesto flavour. Other products that have also proven to be popular include the range of Zammit hams, hot and mild Soppressa salami, their fresh 100% pork Italian style sausages (hot and mild) and their range of fresh meats from Oaks Farm and Otway Pork. “My goal is to bring life back to our great town and convenience for our customers. The town heritage, community spirit and the locals make Warragamba the town that it is. Everyone is here to help and support one another” ended David. Nick’s Deli and Grocery are located at Warradale Plaza, Unit 3/5 Fourteenth Street in Warragamba. Their phone number is 0414 608700. You can find them on Facebook at www.facebook.com/nicksdeliwarragamba. Look out for their advertisement in this month’s edition of the Mulgoa Valley Gazette. Building Designs Advice STYLE OF DESIGN FOR YOUR NEW HOME Kitchens are designed around the family area and are now part of the family room area where the family spends most of their time together. The entire kitchen now has stainless steel kitchen appliances from dishwashers to double door fridges. Formal living room and dining rooms are no longer an important part of the family needs. However, an eating area and TV/entertainment room is now part of the “new” design of today’s home. Office, Study/PC rooms, Theatre and Gym rooms are becoming an important part of the new home layout design. Most new homes now have the facilities of outdoor eating and BBQ entertainment area’s called the “Alfresco” area. Thirty years ago the “Australian Federation” style of home was seen everywhere. Some new suburbs became a “Federation” suburb with this style of design to be seen in every street. A typical example is the first and second land release in Glenmore Park. This style is a typical example of construction in mass production. So when you are ready to start planning for your new home, have a look at your street, the type of design styles that are shown in your street and choose a design that is different enough not to clash with the street-scape. This is where a building designer/architect comes in, to advise and design your new home. Some of the building designs available are the Contemporary, Colonial, Federation, Modern, Art-Deco, Gothic, Spanish etc….. (See next issue for a continuation of this topic)

Child Anxiety Is Increasing • Transition to school program and school readiness experiences • Early childhood teachers and trained educators • Building strong foundations for future learning • Tailored programs in age specific rooms 2-6 yrs • Fees start from $35 perper dayday Fees start from

$22

No Fees charged for Public Holidays or School Holidays Current estimates are that 10% of children suffer from anxiety. I think it is more, mainly because anxiety is frequently misunderstood by parents and teachers. Anxiety is often mislabelled as laziness, stubbornness, shyness, defiance, anger, etc, because it sometimes looks like those. It can also look like ADHD. I remember working with a family a few years ago. The child was extremely anxious. She would not go to the toilet or shower by herself in her own home. She would not do her homework. The parent said she was lazy. I asked ‘lazy or terrified?’ and the parent stopped in her tracks, and quietly said ‘terrified’. If your child’s anxious behaviours are disruptive and dysfunctional and limiting his/her quality of life, please get it treated. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is regarded as the best treatment. Anxiety is a HUGE topic, but here are some tips for you… • Get it treated sooner rather than later. I prefer to see it treated by the age of 7 years. After that, the child starts to develop more fears and phobias and they pile up on top of each other. Untreated anxiety can lead to further and more severe mental health problems during adolescence and adulthood, and there is a greater risk of substance abuse. Western Sydney University has a low-cost psychology clinic. • Teach your child calming down skills such as deep belly breathing, positive self-talk, calming thoughts, and counting backwards. Practice calming down skills daily and reinforce the use of calming down skills. Hint – a calming down skill is portable and soothing - it is not patting a puppy (can’t take a puppy to school), going for a walk (can’t go for a walk whenever you feel like it), or punching a pillow (keeps you in ‘fight’ mode). • Pay attention to brave behaviours (rather than the anxious behaviours). • If your child has to go somewhere such as a school excursion or camp, work out a plan with him or her for anticipated anxious moments and which calming skills s/he can use to get through those moments. Let the teachers know about the plan so they can walk your child through it if your child is in a panic. Do not rescue your child, remind him/her of the plan – anxiety is a negative feedback loop, the more you rescue the worse it will get. • Role model calm. If you are anxious, your child will be anxious. I have some anxiety resources on the Hands, Hearts & Minds blog https://handsheartsminds.wordpress.com/anxietyresources/. U Image: www.pexels.com

Positive Ways of Communicating with your Child Many parents or caregivers of school-aged children would be familiar with the age-old ritual of asking your child how their day was at school. Often, these questions are met with a simple one word reply or in some cases, no reply at all. Parents are left pondering what their child is actually learning and if they have any friends. Sound familiar? Encouraging children to share information about their day at school is about asking the right questions at the right time. Before you can do this, you need to consider your child’s personality and communication style. Some children do not respond favourably to being bombarded with questions the minute they get in the car after school. Others might feel pressured to respond a particular way for fear of your reaction to what they say. Whilst some children might need questions phrased a particular way to encourage them to open up. Identifying the communication style or needs of your child is the first step to authentic and open communication. If you feel your child is becoming overwhelmed with being asked when they first see you, resist the urge to jump straight into questions but rather say hello, offer them an afternoon snack or drink and tell them a little about your day. Ease the questions in as part of a relaxed, non-confrontational conversation. Also, by modelling how you communicate about the day, it will demonstrate effective communication for your child. It is difficult to keep your emotions in-check when your child is experiencing difficulties at school and most of us are probably guilty of having an overreaction to something our child has told us that has happened at school before. If this has been the case in the past, you will need to rebuild your trust with your child and show them a controlled and positive outlook to overcoming problems at school. This will take time but stick with it as it will open the doors to communication in the future. When phrasing questions, try to word them in ways that elicit a response that requires more than one word. Instead of “How was your day?” try, “Tell me about the best part of your day”. Instead of “Did you learn anything today?” try, “What are 3 things you learned today?”. If the answer is “nothing”, then you could ask which subjects they had and ask a specific question related to that subject. If the class teacher uses an app to communicate to parents, use that information as a discussion point to connect with your child. Remember, all these things take time to develop so the key is be positive and encouraging but not forceful. U Building trust is important in opening the doors of communication Image: www.pexels.com. HEALTH MATTERS

Paracetamol – Can it cause Gastrointestinal Symptoms? Last month I briefly cited at a nested case-control analysis done in 2001 looking at 2,105 cases of upper gastrointestinal complications (UGICs) and 11,500 controls. Patients were considered cases if they suffered a bleed/perforation in the stomach or duodenum or their clinical diagnosis was peptic ulcer, and the patient had been referred to a consultant or admitted to hospital. The study found that patients taking acetaminophen at doses: 1. less than 2000 mg daily had no increased risk of UGICs, while those taking, 2. greater than 2000 mg daily were 3.6 times more likely to have UGICs compared with non-users. The study also compared non-users & NSAID users (NSAIDs use carries known risk for gastrointestinal complications). Compared with non-users, NSAID use increased the relative risk of upper gastrointestinal complications: 1. 2.4 times for low/medium doses 2. 4.9 times for high doses 3. 3.1 times for short plasma half-life NSAIDs, 4. 4.5 times for long half-life NSAIDs, 5. 5.4 times for slow-release formulations. Thus, (in this study at least) there seems to be a real risk of upper gastrointestinal complications that comes with Acetaminophen use above 2000mg daily, and this risk is intermediate between the risk level from low/medium and high NSAID use. More importantly patients need to understand that if they take Acetaminophen > 2000mg daily with NSAIDs, these drugs may interact to increase risk of UGICs substantially. When compared with non-users of drugs in either group, the relative risk of UGICs was 13.2 times greater in patients who used both an NSAIDs and acetaminophen (2000 mg or more). This relative risk changed little (it increased slightly to 14.3) when the analysis was restricted to just patients with either osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis. Conversely, when the acetaminophen dose was less than 2000mg per day, even with concurrent NSAID use, the relative risk of UGIC was 4.1 times that of control patients (taking no drugs). i.e. low dose acetaminophen, plus NSAID gave roughly the same risk as medium to high dose acetaminophen alone. According to Lewis (2002), although the above case control study has some limitations, the fact that ‘the risk of gastrointestinal toxicity was only observed among current users of acetaminophen’ and that, ‘there seemed to be a clear

dose response, with no increased risk of gastrointestinal toxicity at doses below 2000 mg/day’ suggests that findings may be legitimate. So how may an essentially very safe drug such as acetaminophen cause increased risk of UGICs at doses above 2000mg per day? Lewis states ‘In general, acetaminophen has been viewed as an analgesic and antipyretic compound without associated risk of upper gastrointestinal bleeding. However, at high concentrations, acetaminophen can also inhibit’ both COX 1 and 2 enzymes & thus ‘high doses of acetaminophen could also lead to peptic ulcer disease and upper gastrointestinal bleeding’. So why has much of the literature prior to this study found no gastrointestinal effects of acetaminophen intake? The Authors state that this ‘apparent paradox between our findings and’ most of the previous ‘clinical literature disappears when one takes into account that the majority of these [previous] studies included doses lower than 2,000 mg per day’ and were done using ‘healthy subjects’.

PAWS A WHILE

Article Written + Submitted by: Camille Brandt from Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital A: 377 Wentworth Rd, Orchard Hills P: 4736 2027

We are Relocating to Bigger Premises We will be relocating to bigger premises in the next few months. We will be located on the same road as we are currently on, Wentworth Road, but just further down the road. The new premises have been renovated to accommodate a veterinary hospital. The premises are huge! There are double brick walls, 3m high ceilings and a green bull nosed verandah around the front of the building. We will even have a concrete driveway and carpark! There will still be an off leash park in the front yard for you and your dogs to enjoy. We can’t wait!!!!! Camille purchased the veterinary hospital business nearly 9 years ago and there has been steady and continual growth of the business in this time. We started off with 4 staff and have grown to 16 staff members. We have definitely outgrown the current premises! We are unsure of the date of the relocation at this time, as there is still some work to be completed. We will let you know as soon as we know. We are so excited, we cannot wait for you to visit our large country practice! We will keep you up to date on Facebook with any news of the relocation date.

New Baby Boy for Rachel!! On Sunday 10th February 2019, our veterinary nurse, Rachel gave birth to a beautiful baby boy. Both mum and bub are doing well. We wish Rachel the best of luck through her journey of parenthood. Theresa, one of our veterinarians, is due March 2019 with her second child. We wish them best of luck through this special journey. We are all very excited for the new arrivals! Check out our Facebook page for baby updates. We look forward to meeting you and your pets at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital, and please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team. For more information check out our Facebook, website www.orchardhillsvet.com.au or call 02 4736 2027.

Latest @ Luddenham by Wayne Willmington working on getting one side of the road constructed first as to get the traffic off the existing road. Last month, Member for Mulgoa Tanya Davies MP, showed members of the St Marys RSL Sub Branch the new Anzac Memorial at Hyde Park. It was great to see the soil sample that was collected last year from Luddenham Progress Hall now permanently on display. The 115th Annual Luddenham Show is on the 2nd and 3rd of March. Known as the Country Show, this year it promises to be bigger and better. If you have an opinion on what Luddenham of the future should be like, please email your thoughts or views to willmingtons@bigpond.com.

It’s good to see that Western Sydney Airport Co are out getting involved in our local community, first off by becoming a Supreme Sponsor of this year’s Luddenham Show and having 20 volunteers offer to paint the Luddenham Showground arena fence. Well done to the team on community involvement. Work is progressing on a temporary airport fence. The fence on the existing Northern Road is just temporary as they prepare for more earthworks. A permanent fence will be constructed on Elizabeth Drive. Two new roundabouts are being constructed on the Northern Road. One just south of the Shell service station and the other near Leppington Pastoral. These roundabouts will be constructed to provide safe access to the work sites. Eaton Road is about to close as a thru road. Work on the diversion around the airport is making lots of progress and I believe that they are
