NSW Government Grant For Mulgoa Valley Football Club Tanya Davies MP, State Member for Mulgoa, visited Mulgoa Valley Football Club this week and met with Club President Mark Goodwin and young junior football players from the club’s Under 12s mixed team to announce that their club was successful in receiving a oneoff NSW Government grant for $1,988.30. “I am delighted to announce that the Mulgoa Valley Football Club has been successful with their grant submission. I advocated strongly for the club at short notice to deliver this important financial support, just as the football season is about to start said Tanya Davies. The grant is for much needed replacement of goal nets, player training bibs, match and training balls to help start off the 2015 football season. The club has enjoyed a resurgent in interest in football locally with player registrations increasing 38% over last year so far. “I would like to thank Tanya for coming out to make this announcement. The grant comes to us just in a nick of time as we got a large influx of registered players this year and a lot of equipment needs upgrading. Continued pg. 13.

Outdoor Movie a Huge Success

All Welcome for ANZAC Service at Warragamba When: Saturday April 25th Time: 11am start for the march Where: Memorial Park Warragamba (opposite the Town Hall).

Last month, Wallacia Public School P&C screened “How to Train Your Dragon 2”. It was a great night, the weather held off. Everyone enjoyed their wood fired pizzas and sat eating their popcorn during the movie. Thank you to all the community members who came and supported our school. We would especially like to thank our local businesses who sponsored this event, without their support it would not be possible. Our major sponsor was Penrith Home Maker Centre. Our gold sponsors were: Be Productions, Century 21 Mulgoa, Choice Home Loans, Lower Russell & Farr Accountants, Mulgoa Gourmet Butchery, Ultimate Concrete Pump, Hertz Penrith, Bombora Pools, JT Insulations, Jay Jay Building Supplies, Wallacia Hotel, Master Billiards. Our silver sponsors were: Mulgoa Fruit World, Mulgoa Pharmacy, Trevor Roots Butchery, Allways Building, Mulgoa Valley Receptions, Blue Mountains Balloons, Luscious Catering, Admire Beaute, Mulgoa Medical Practice, Wallacia Newsagency and Little Nero’s Pizza & Pasta. We look forward to doing this again next year!

The new ANZAC Memorial wall will be completed and there is the opportunity for local residents to have a personal memorial plaque on the back to remember a relative who fought in either the First or Second World War and who is not already listed on the memorial plaques at the Cenotaph.

FAITH – ANGLICAN PARISH of MULGOA Minister Matt Olliffe P: 4774 0422 M: 0401 958 161 Sunday Service times: 8:30am St Thomas’ Mulgoa. 10:30am St Paul’s Warragamba. 7pm Glenmore Park Anglican Church.

Jesus Saviour of our Souls, Other Refuge Have I None As I write this month’s article, I am coming off a fortnight where I have conducted four funerals, two for people who used to come to church at Warragamba before immobility meant they could no longer come. They all were well known local people: Iris Bailey, Lal Podmore, Doug Vicary and Zo Thompson. Each one was what we would call ‘elderly’, but still their deaths were untimely – because death is not right, an unseemly imposition in God’s world that breaks relationships. God has put eternity in our hearts, so that we long for eternal life and relationship with him. The first part of the Anglican funeral service says that at a funeral ‘we are reminded of our own coming death’. It is easy to forget that we are going to die. I first realised I was going to die when I was ten years old. Yes, I am a bit slow. I remember the moment distinctly. I was lying in the bath looking at my body. I started think about how long my grandma had. And then my thoughts turned to me. This was my thought process. ‘I was born in 1970. I’m 10. In 1990 I will be 20. Wow, that’s so old. I’ll be a man. And in the year 2000, I’ll be thirty. I’ll probably have kids. And in 2010, I’d be 40. Wow, that’s as old as my dad!’ And 2020, 30, 40, 50, 60 flashed past. And then I thought ‘In 2070, I’d be a hundred. I don’t know anyone who is a hundred. Because they end up dead. And their bodies get put in the ground. And that’s what’s going to happen to me too.’ And I pictured worms eating my arms and legs. And I started crying, there in the bathtub. ‘It is better to go to a house of mourning than to go to a house of feasting, for death is the destiny of everyone; the living should take this to heart.’ (Ecclesiastes 7:2) Each one of us has to realise death is coming, unless Jesus comes back in our lifetime. The wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23). And then there’s the judgment (Hebrews 9:27). God will bring each of us into judgment for everything we’ve thought, said and done (2 Corinthians 5:10). And that is good news, in that our lives are significant and matter to God, so that he assesses us. The bad news is that we are sinners, and God hates sin. But there is more good news, that Jesus Christ came to save sinners. His perfect life fulfilled the law of God on our behalf. His sin bearing death took away the anger of God from all who trust in him. And His glorious resurrection punched a hole through death, so that we might enter into eternal life by faith in Christ. One of the ladies I buried was a church friend, Iris Bailey, a long time resident of Warragamba. As we come up to Anzac Day, I thought I’d tell you about her war service. Iris joined the army in 1941 and served for 4 years. She reasoned that the country was being invaded, and was convinced it was her duty to join up. Iris was in the Signal Corp and learnt morse code. When they asked for volunteers for New Guinea, Iris volunteered. She spent 12 months in New Guinea, but had to wait till 1946 for a ship to bring her home. Iris was a proud returned soldier and loved taking part in the Anzac Day marches at Warragamba. Iris was also a decided Christian. She used to do morning tea and flowers at church at what she called, ‘my little church on the hill’, St Paul’s Warragamba. Iris always knew that Jesus was there. She said to me, ‘I feel sorry for people that don’t know Jesus. Because he is the best friend you will ever have.’ She recited a verse of poetry to me, ‘“Jesus saviour of our souls,

4 April 2015

www.mulgoagazette.com.au

other refuge have I none, bring my helpless soul to thee, O leave us not alone.’ And she said to me, ‘I say this every night, and when I say my prayers, that is included’. Iris was ready to face death. Though she too was a sinner, like me and you, her spirit is now with Christ Jesus, and one day will be raised by him and given a wonderful new resurrection body, with legs that work properly and eyes that don’t itch. There are many ways to get ready for death. We should write a will, talk to our loved ones about our wishes, get our superannuation and life insurance in order, even organise a funeral plan. But by far the most important thing to do is to make sure you are right with God through Jesus Christ. I hope and pray you find this Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, that Iris found. He is not far from you, his biography being in the bible on your shelf, and his ear bent toward you, wanting to hear your prayer. He says to all, ‘Come to me, all that are weary and carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest’. Matt Olliffe Minister, Anglican Parish of Mulgoa (Article submitted and written by)

FAITH – WARRAGAMBA BAPTIST CHURCH

ANZAC DAY WARRAGAMBA

Lyndon Rumsey P: 4774 1476 M: 0417174455 W: www.warragambabaptist.org.au Sunday Service: 9.30 am

Pastors Corner The story of Easter is so familiar to most of us, yet it’s importance should never be lost on us. God the Father’s love for all mankind, culminated in the death of His Son Jesus Christ. The death of anybody brings mixed feelings, grief, pain and suffering and sometimes the end of difficult circumstances. All of these were present at Jesus’ Crucifixion; there is no doubt that those close to Him experienced grief. Their grief was in the loss of someone they loved, but even more their hope had been built around Jesus establishing an earthly kingdom, which would free them from Roman tyranny. The Disciples and their supporters were fearful that they too would be arrested and punished. Jesus restored their hope by his appearance to them, prior to ascending into Heaven. There is no doubt that Jesus suffered beyond our imagination during those days. The betrayal by Judas, who with the other Disciples had travelled around the countryside. Judas had watched Jesus perform miracles, listened to Jesus ‘ teachings; yet Judas betrayed Jesus, for thirty pieces of silver. The false accusations and the unfair biased trials by Pontius Pilate and Herod; The crowd choice to release a murderer Barabbas instead of an innocent man Jesus; The crown of thorns forced onto Jesus’ head; the nails that pierced his hands; the mocking of the crowd and the soldiers; the sign above him ‘This is the King of the Jews’; the sword that pieced his side; they cast lots for His clothes. Perhaps the religious and government authorities thought that they had ended the influence of this man called Jesus, no longer would they have to put up with his supporters and his teachings. How wrong they were. The ongoing effects of Jesus life were just starting, because at Easter time we celebrate a Risen Christ. Jesus Christ came to earth to die for the forgiveness of our sins; that includes all the past, present and our future sins, but not just for us, but for all mankind. It was to give us a new life and a new hope, found only through faith in Jesus; 2 Corinthians 5:17 says, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! As you celebrate this Easter season, give thanks and take time to remember that ultimate sacrifice that Jesus made for you. God bless, Lyndon Rumsey (Article submitted and written by)

Locks lost for Leukaemia

Within one week, Penrith Anglican College has raised over $50,000 in support of a Year 5 student fighting Leukaemia through the Leukaemia Foundation’s World’s Greatest Shave. Fundraising Team captain Max Olsson is staggered how much the event has raised and wishes to thank everyone who donated. The College initially set a goal of $10,000, which also had a promise from of Headmaster Mr Mark Lewis to shave his head if reached. The College community smashed the target within two days, sealing the fate of Mr Lewis’ hair on Friday 13th March. “This is an amazing effort by all involved and I am humbled to be shaving my head in support our student, his family and greater College community”, states Mr Lewis. To keep donations flowing three female staff members raised

their heads in support of the cause and agreed to shave their locks when and if the fundraising effort reached $25,000. As a result of the amazing support and generosity for the shave, five Penrith Anglican staff members and a number of students are now sporting new hairstyles. Head of Junior School, Mrs Kennedy said “she was in awe of the generosity and support towards our affected student and school community. Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family”. If you would like to support the Leukaemia Foundation or find out more about blood cancers, please visit http://www. worldsgreatestshave.com or http://www.leukaemia.org.au

PARENTS CORNER Article by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) NepeanStudent – Wellbeing Worker – Mulgoa Public School Nepean Community & Neighbourhood Services Ph: 0409 986 121 Centre: 4721 8520 Blog: handsheartsminds.wordpress.com

Humans Need Hugs Touch is so important. Infants that have all of their needs met but don’t get hugs, affection or eye contact are at risk of developing a condition called ‘failure to thrive’. Dr Virginia Satir, a world renowned family therapist, said that humans need…4 hugs per day for survival, 8 hugs per day for maintenance, 12 hugs per day for growth. How many hugs have your kids had today? It’s easy to give our little kids hugs because they are frequently climbing all over us. As our kids get older, we need to remember to give them hugs too. I tell my big boys “you’re never too old or too big for a hug”. Parents who have a number of children do the math. They say “I have 4 kids so that means I’ll be giving 48 hugs per day, that’s a lot of hugs”. Those parents who decide to give their kids’ hugs find lots of ways to meet the quota (hint: group hugs), and they report that they feel closer to their children, and their children have better behaviour as a result. When you have a strong relationship with your child, he or she is more inclined to listen to you and do as you ask. And why do hugs create all this goodness? Hugs release oxytocin in the brain. Oxytocin is a ‘peace, love, and mung beans’ hormone that counteracts the nasty stress hormone called Cortisol. Go on! Give your kids more hugs. The nice thing about a hug is that while you’re giving one, you’re getting one in return. It’s a win-win!

Become a Family Day Care Educator Wollondilly Shire Council urgently requires Family Day Care Educators. Combine your passion for children with the opportunity to create a financially rewarding professional career as an early childhood educator. You can stay at home with your own children and assist other families by providing quality child care in your own home. Family Day Care Educators are early childhood education and care professionals registered with Wollondilly Family Day Care Scheme that is responsible for approving, supporting, training and advising its educators. With the changing and ever increasing childcare needs of Australian working families, family day care services have never been in such demand. Furthermore, with family day care’s inclusion under the National Quality Framework, and a growing awareness of the many unique benefits of the service, family day care is fast becoming the option of choice in early childhood education and care. “In our thriving community, it is vital that we have services in place to accommodate Wollondilly families with young children, now and into the future. The role of a Family Day Care Educator is an important and rewarding one, so if you have ever considered it, this is your chance,” says Mayor, Cr Col Mitchell. For further information on becoming a Family Day Care Educator, contact Council’s Family Day Care Coordination Unit on 4677 8200.

Living in Fear…… The acknowledgement of Rosie Batty as the Australian of the Year provides a welcome acknowledgement that domestic violence is a dire social issue that needs to be addressed. We would like to say it is “unAustralian” but the statistics suggest otherwise. Almost one woman a week killed; more and more “revenge killings” leaving mothers (and sometimes fathers) and other family members bereft and grieving. The amount of domestic violence reported each year is increasing. In Victoria alone more than 60,000 incidents were reported to police in 2014. Domestic Violence can be: 1. Psychological Abuse - Saying they are crazy whores, ugly, or stupid. To make them feel bad embarrass them, shame them, and saying they are bad women. 2. Social Abuse - Not letting them see their family or friends; go shopping or ring people; always checking on them; not letting them go anywhere. 3. Financial Abuse - Keeping all the money; not letting them buy things they need; taking their money from them. 4. Intimidation - Threatening they will kill them or hurt them; screaming at them; harassing them. Domestic Violence Help Line 1800 424 017 5. Physical Assault - To slap, push, punch, kick, spit, choke, bite, stab or use a weapon. 6. Sexual Assault - Forcing them to have sex; unwanted touching; making them feel dirty; making them watch pornography. 7. Stalking - Following them around; watching them – in the house; checking on them at work and other places.

Fixing Chronic Foot Pain – Plantar Fasciitis Many of us have had painful feet at some time. Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common causes. Treatment options include rest, supportive shoes, arch supports, orthotics, stretching, strengthening, night splints, anti-inflammatory agents or surgery. These measures may help but some people suffer for a long time with little relief, even after trying many of these treatments. Plantar fasciitis pain can stop you walking, running, working, playing, and leave you feeling debilitated and frustrated when you can’t resolve it. Technically, things like over pronation, different leg lengths, lateral tibial torsion, & femoral anteversion are risk factors for plantar fasciitis, but, it’s plantar-fascia micro trauma, from overuse or excessive weight bearing activities that’s the most common cause. Overuse causes injury to foot ligaments, tendons and muscles. These tissues swell with toxin-filled fluids that leak from injured cells causing connective tissues, muscles & nerves in the affected areas to become inflamed and painful. The swelling reduces blood & lymph flow and this sustains the cycle of inflammation & pain. In most instances the solution lies in: 1. Reducing stressors (temporarily stop running, weight loss, etc) 2. Improving nutrient intake so the body can resist stressors 3. Removing inflammatory build-up in foot & calf, and lengthening affected muscles. This allows foot tissue function to normalise, which often relieves foot pain completely, even in many long standing cases.

MONEY MATTERS PARENTS CORNER With David & Leonie Jackson – Great Aussie Dream P: 4733 8592 E: admin@gad.com.au

Property Investing Basics We have an affinity for property here in Australia. We all want to own our own home and most of us would like to own an investment property or two. In fact over 1.9 million of us reported to the ATO that we owned an investment property. That’s about 8.3% of the population. But whilst many of us have the desire to be property investors, most will never take that step due to misinformation, fear or simply not knowing how to proceed. Some invest anyway, often with disastrous results. Done properly though property can be an easy and relatively safe investment which can provide tax benefits and generate wealth over the long term if you get a few key things right. Of course finding the right property is crucial. An attractive rental proposition in an area where demand is high. Then you need to protect your asset properly with a good Landlord’s Insurance in case you get one of the few bad tenants. Importantly though, you must make sure that your finances are structured correctly. Without question, most of the problems I see that investors have all relate back to their finance. Whether you’re looking to buy your first investment, fix a problem with your existing property or want to grow your portfolio, our free Property Investor consultation is for you. And the great thing is, we won’t try to sell you a property!
