Council Calls On Wollondilly Youth To Get Involved In Youth Week 2022
Nominations are now being accepted for the 2022 Rotary Clubs and Districts of NSW Emergency Services Community Awards (NSW RESCA), which recognise frontline emergency services personnel for service above and beyond the call of duty. Member for Wollondilly, Nathaniel Smith, said the annual awards, now in their eighth year, provide an opportunity for Wollondilly emergency services personnel to be recognised at a State-wide level. “The emergency services in Wollondilly, particularly our SES and RFS members, have been kept very busy with the recent heavy rains and floods and before that the bushfires. They continue to work tirelessly and so often have gone above and beyond to ensure our community is safe,” Mr Smith said. “Emergency services personnel are not only first responders during times of crisis but they also perform essential work yearround, such as community engagement and fundraising. “I encourage everyone in Wollondilly to consider recognising a local hero by nominating them for an Emergency Services Community Award.” Minister for Emergency Services and Resilience and Minister for Flood Recovery Steph Cooke said the unprecedented storms and floods have resulted in one of the most challenging times ever faced by emergency services personnel. “Having spent weeks on the ground in the Northern Rivers region, I have seen firsthand the selfless work they continue to do,” Ms Cooke said. The Rotary Clubs and Districts of NSW Emergency Services Community Awards (NSW RESCA) recognise the dedication and
Youth Week will be celebrated in Wollondilly from 4-14 April this year, with planning under way for a range of awesome activities to take place across the Shire. Youth Week began as a NSW Government initiative in 1989 and has since grown to be a celebration of young people in every state and territory across Australia. It is organised by young people, for young people. Events in the Wollondilly Shire will include Battle of the Bands, an Extreme Sports Expo, a Manga and Mocktails afternoon in the library, as well as a short film competition. Council is calling on local young people to be a part of the Youth Week Working Group, to contribute their ideas about what they would like to see happen as part of these festivities and have their voices heard about current and future activities for young people in our region. Young people can be involved as much they want to, whether it is just by sending an email with their suggestions, helping plan and bring events together, or even volunteering at the Youth Week events. Mayor Matt Gould said, “I’m looking forward to being part of the action for

Youth Week 2022”. “This is a great chance for us to celebrate the important contribution that our young people make to the Shire”. “I would encourage our younger residents to get involved in whatever way they can to make the most of the opportunities available during Youth Week, whether it is signing up for Battle of the Bands, producing a short film, or volunteering at the events”. Young people aged between 12 and 24 who would like to be involved or share their ideas should send an email toyouth@ wollondilly.nsw.gov.au. EXPECT THE
BEST! ROFIA NIAZY 0450 046 077 rofia@realhomesrealty.com.au
The 2022 Warragamba ANZAC Day Service will be taking place on Monday 25th of April at 11:00am at Warragamba Memorial Park. There will be a full service, and the local community is invited to pay their respects to all the fallen men and women. All ANZAC Day commemorations across NSW can proceed as normal this year. They will be having a March, and this will start at the Warragamba Silverdale Neighbourhood Centre (WSNC), located Corner of Weir Road and Fourteenth Street. For anyone wishing to March, please meet there at 10:45am. The Service will feature the choir from Caroline Chisholm College. The school band from St Dominic’s College will also be attending. “Our ANZAC Committee have been working hard in raising money to purchase an ex- Army utility and other ANZAC memorabilia. Our hope is to make the Memorial Park a nice place for the community to sit and reflect what these men and women risked to give us this beautiful country we live in today. We hope to see you all there at 11:00am on ANZAC Day” said Hellen Dillon of Warragamba ANZAC Committee to the Mulgoa Valley Gazette. With the ANZAC statue and plaques previously damaged at Warragamba Memorial Park, it’s important to look after them. It is a public place for all to enjoy. After the service, everyone is welcome back to Warragamba Workers Club for refreshments. Visit Warragamba ANZAC Committee on Facebook for updates and more information. You can also contact Hellen Dillon on 0428 880299 or Robert Marshall on 0406 223004. r The lone soldier statue at Warragamba Memorial Park | Image Supplied

Article Submitted by: Senior Minister Christopher Braga St Thomas’ Mulgoa | P: 47331635 W: gpachurch.online | A: 43 St Thomas’ Road Mulgoa Service Times: Sundays @ 9.30am It’s easy to make mistakes. I make them all the time. When you make a mistake, it often means saying sorry to someone. There are small mistakes like forgetting to buy the milk at the shops, but there are also big mistakes. Probably the biggest, in my mind, is not seeing Jesus for who he is. This might result in simply ignoring Jesus and just ‘getting on’ with life. For some of the religious leaders they saw the threat Jesus was to them and killed him by nailing him to a cross. The Old Testament prophets said this, ‘he was led like a lamb to the slaughter although he was innocent of crime’. One of the eyewitnesses of the crucifixion said, ‘he committed no sin and no deceit was found in his mouth’. It’s not just that he was innocent, his resurrection shows that he truly is the Son of God. His death was not just an injustice, but he is the one who died in our place, bore our sins and took out punishment, so we could be forgiven! It means we can say ‘sorry’ to God and have a new relationship with him. This is worth celebrating! v Image: www.pixabay.com WARRAGAMBA BAPTIST CHURCH

Pastor’s Corner As we approach another Easter period, it is so easy to be consumed by Easter eggs, Hot Cross Buns, the Royal Easter Show and some days off. Whilst in themselves, these things are enjoyable, the significance of Easter story is so much more. Easter is about God the Father’s love for all mankind, which culminated in the death of His Son Jesus Christ. Death is generally both difficult and a mixture of feelings grief, sorrow, guilt, regret, loss of hope and sometimes relief that the person is no longer suffering. At Jesus’ crucifixion, there is no doubt that those close to Him, experienced grief, because they had lost someone they loved, but even more this shattered their hope that Jesus would establish an earthly kingdom, which would free them from Roman tyranny. Jesus suffered beyond our imagination, there would be pain, as the crown of thorns was forced onto Jesus’ head; and as the nails were hammered into each of his hands; and then a sword pierced his side. Whilst this was happening, the crowd mocked him, and the soldiers placed a sign above him ‘This is the King of the Jews’; later the soldiers drew lots for Jesus’ clothes. Perhaps the religious and government authorities thought that they had ended the influence of this man called Jesus, no longer would they have to put up with his supporters and his teachings. How wrong they were. The ongoing effects of Jesus life were just starting, because at Easter time we celebrate a Risen Christ. All that Jesus endured was not because he had committed a crime, it was a choice Jesus made for you and me. Jesus Christ came to earth to die for the forgiveness of our sins; that includes all the past, present and future sins, but not just for us, but for all mankind. It was to give us a new life and a new hope, found only through faith in Jesus. The Bible says, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!” As you celebrate this Easter season, give thanks and take time to remember that ultimate sacrifice that Jesus made for you.

Teddy the Dog Rescued
Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) firefighters recently overcome floodwaters to carry out a rescue of a furry kind at Wallacia, in Sydney’s west last month. Just before midday on March 3rd, Teddy, the Irish Wolfhound, was having life-threatening complications after an operation a few days earlier. With Bents Basin Road covered by floodwaters and impassable, two firefighters from Warragamba Fire Station accessed the dog’s property by driving over the Old Silverdale Hillclimb bush track in one of their own 4-wheel drives. The remaining fire crew and a Rural Fire Service team stood by at Bents Basin Road, ready to assist. The firefighters successfully reached ‘Teddy,’ who has since been treated by a veterinarian, with his relieved owner by his side. Acting Superintendent Mathew Sigmund from Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) said, “We attend numerous large animal rescues every week. While FRNSW has the skills and equipment to rescue a large animal, we encourage the community to be aware of prevention measures. Including awareness of livestock location, checking fences, and insuring an ample supply of water”. v Teddy the dog with his rescuers | Image/Article: Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW)

Latest @ Luddenham by Wayne Willmington The decision to cancel the 2022 Luddenham Show in January turned out to be a good decision. Not because of COVID-19, but because 328mm of rain fell in the 5 days leading up to the Show date. This left the Showground too wet to hold the Show. Planning has now started for the 2023 Show to be held on the 4th and 5th March. Western Sydney Airport Co have closed Adams Road, from 17th of March, for up to six months. The upgrade is to allow heavy vehicles (fuel tankers) to access the Airport. The detour will be via Northern Rd and Elizabeth Drive. Residents will have access to their properties via temporary access roads. Entry to the Club is via Elizabeth Drive. Residents within Twin Creeks, please be mindful of your home security. A number of incidents have occurred where high performance motor vehicles are being targeted during break-ins late at night and in the early hours of the morning. Expensive motor vehicles seem to be what offenders are after. Lock away keys and other valuables when you go to bed, ensure your external lighting remains on overnight, lock all doors (including ‘doggy’ doors) as well as windows and report any suspicious persons or vehicles in the area to 000. Luddenham residents are committed to doing everything they can to ensure the village survives and thrives. They are running the #saveluddenham campaign and that is quickly gaining momentum and broad support from community, industry, and government. The campaign is now underway following the decision by Western Sydney Airport Co to object to more houses in Luddenham in areas out of the noise contours. It is interesting Simon Hickey, Chief Executive Officer of WSA Co and the Federal Minister for Communications, Urban Infrastructure, Cities and the Arts and Government Shareholder Minister on WSA Co, Paul Fletcher, will not speak with Luddenham residents. WSA Co has not objected to new homes in Bradfield that are situated the same distance from Western Sydney Airport as proposed new homes in Luddenham, and therefore would be subject to the same amount of noise. But, once again the Federal Government and WSA Co will not discuss why with us. We would prefer to work with WSA to better understand the basis for their objections, which simply don’t make sense and are inconsistent with their position on other like areas of the Aerotropolis. If you would like to help the #saveluddenham campaign, contact Luddenham Progress Association via email luddenhampa@gmail.com. Another interesting fact about the airport. The Luddenham Progress Association has been told by the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications that the second runway may never be built at Western Sydney Airport. r A very soggy Luddenham Showground | Images Supplied

A Snapshot of Beauty If you are an amateur photographer and are interested in wildlife, flora and fauna, scenery, architecture, and pictures that tell a story, then look no further. Wollondilly Snapshots is a Facebook page, started by local James Whitfield where people can post photographs of anywhere in Wollondilly or Surrounds. The page began 6 years ago and has over 1,000 members. James is a passionate photographer and has been taking photos for nearly 70 years! “I was working with another lady some years ago. She suggested to start a page for photographers that showcased Wollondilly, as there wasn’t anything like that then” explained James. The page has fans from right across the globe, including Ireland and the US. It’s also a favourite site for ex-pat people that once lived in the area before moving away. There have been many photographs shared over the years, and the page is much loved by
the community. “I always have my camera with me. I’ve posted 2,418 photos over the years. One of my most liked was Burragorang Valley at sunset. The page also commonly features a ‘where is’ quiz, which gives locals a change to guess where the photograph was taken” he smiled. James’ favourite subjects to photograph for Wollondilly Snapshots are landscapes and fauna. Personally, it’s members of his family. “I enjoy sharing my photographs and looking at what our members post on the page. It’s a privilege to be able to share this wonderful place we call home through photography. I get a great sense of achievement when people talk about my work” James stated. There are rules for the page, so that it can be enjoyed by children and adults. To join, search Wollondilly Snapshots on Facebook. r

A Dual Champion
With the 2022 Penrith and District Junior Rugby League Competition about to kick off, Silverdale’s Matilda Vella of Emu Plains JRLFC has had a dream start to the season. That’s even before taking the field. The talented sportswoman will line up for the Under 16 Girls league team for Emu Plains JRLFC this year, after success in another sport, OzTag. Matilda was a member of the Under 14 Girls West Sydney Tigers OzTag team that were recently crowned undefeated champions at the 2022 Junior National OzTag Championships in Coffs Harbour in February. Two other members of her league team also played in this team. “I enjoy playing both sports. The friendships and lifelong friends that I have made is great” Matilda explained. This season, Emu Plains JRLFC will field it’s first Under 12 Girls team, as well as two Under 14’s and Under 16 Girls teams. “Emu Plains have been active in girls’ rugby league over several years, with our numbers increasing each year. We are proud to be pushing the game of women’s rugby league and are committed to the growth and development of all our players” said Joanne Vella, Emu Plains JRLFC Registrar. How Does Vitamin K Prevent Arterial Calcification? Artery walls contain smooth muscle cells. They help control vessel tone, diameter, blood pressure, and use vitamin K to produce/secrete large amounts of a protein called ‘mature matrixGla-protein’ (MGP), a strong inhibitor of arterial-wall calcification. When animals can’t make MGP: 1. For genetic reasons, 2. Because they’re given warfarin; extensive calcification of large arteries occurs within 4 weeks of birth. Warfarin stops vitamin K being utilised in the final step of MGP production, so immature forms of MGP are produced. Immature MGP fails to prevent arterial calcification, and arteries harden. Warfarin causes “artificial” vitamin K insufficiency leading to arteriosclerosis. Vitamin K insufficiency/deficiency can occur for other reasons: 1. Low dietary intake (significant but underappreciated cause) 2. Disturbed intestinal vitamin K absorption due to gastrointestinal disorders, 3. Antibiotic therapy. Artery walls endure huge stresses second-to-second, as they’re forced to endlessly expand/stretch and recontract by the beating heart. To cope, vessel wall tissues are highly metabolically active, and in healthy (nutrient-replete) persons, wall cells have sufficient nutrients to continually repair/maintain themselves and wall tissues. In unhealthy people (multiple-nutrient-deficits), vessel wall cells cannot meet physiological demands placed upon them by their high stress environment. Wall cells fail to complete the necessary repairs to maintain themselves and arterial wall

structural integrity. Pathological wall changes appear. According to this model, cardiovascular disease is primarily a dietary deficiency disorder. Under normal/physiological conditions, arterial wall fluids are supersaturated with calcium and phosphate, however calciumdeposition is prevented by circulating and locally produced calcification inhibitors (including MPG). Under ‘pathologic (nutrient depleted) conditions, arterial wall stress leads to: 1. Artery wall cells undergoing apoptosis (they die), 2. Bits of dead cells (apoptotic bodies) and other signals alerting (summoning) platelets and immune system cells 3. Platelets bind to damaged vessel-walls releasing calcificationpromoting factors 4. Remaining artery wall cells respond to these signals by synthesizing all components of atherosclerotic lesions including calcium depositing proteins 5. But insufficient anti-calcification factors are synthesised 6. And mineralization occurs Vitamin K via MGP, inhibits calcification. MGP blocks: 1. Pro-calcification cell signal-production: a. Apoptotic bodies b. Matrix vesicles c. Hormonal signals 2. Calcium depositing proteins production 3. Calcium deposition directly by binding calcium-salts 4. Growth of existing calcium micro-deposits (covers them) So, to avoid artery calcification, just eat more Vitamin K containing natto and fresh leafy greens.
Wollondilly Shire Unites Wollondilly Shire has dealt with bushfires and now floods in recent years. Heartbreaking times like these can bring out the best in people when they come together for their communities. This is certainly the case in Silverdale. Despite the heavy rains and flooding, 40 to 50 local people of all ages game together at Silverdale Rural Fire Brigade’s station to assist in filling and preparing sandbags for Wollondilly Shire last month. The inspirational volunteers from across the area assisted in shovelling sand to fill bags, loading them onto trucks and cars and stacking them in bulk piles for the community to access if needed. “One message was posted to Facebook requesting assistance and the community support we received was outstanding! We were amazed at how many people came to help, even teenagers rode to the station on their push bikes to give us a hand” explained Catherine Lambeth of Silverdale Rural Fire Brigade. Many bags were filled by the volunteers, including 1,000 in one day. “We would like to thank the community for their assistance, continuous offers of help at the station and the messages we received through our Facebook page! A big thankyou also goes to the amazing people who cooked and delivered homemade cakes to the station for sandbagging volunteers - as well as our own volunteer members” Catherine said. “On top of this, thank you to NSW SES Wollondilly Unit for organising the delivery of sand and sandbags, Silverdale Sand and Soil for supplying multiple deliveries of sand (an approximate total of 50 tonnes), and Pietro’s Italian Restaurant in Warragamba for suppling our volunteers with delicious pizza after the sandbagging” she continued. At this present stage, no additional help is required for sandbagging for April. They will watch the weather conditions and notify the community when this changes. “Whether its fire, flood, famine, or anything else – time and time again Wollondilly residents have proven that when the call goes out for help you can guarantee that call will be answered from young and old. The community will band together and work shoulder to shoulder; rain, hail or shine to achieve a common goal to help one another in a time of need” Catherine ended. r Feature Article [Cover+Above] Community volunteers help prepare sandbags at Silverdale Rural Fire Station| Image: Max Lambeth

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be a beekeeper? Kellyanne Gianatti is the Owner of Mulgoa Honey and has been beekeeping for seven years. “I was inspired to start beekeeping to pollinate our fruit trees on our small farm in Mulgoa. However, I always taught preschoolers about inter generational sustainability and keeping bees who pollinate 1/3 of all the worlds food sources” Kellyanne said to the Mulgoa Valley Gazette. “I love honey and appreciate the health benefits for the gut, allergies and brain function” she added. Kellyanne has recently doubled the number of hives she has, producing more honey on her farm. “I currently have 10 hives. Usually, 5 hives yield about 300kg per year, so now we have doubled our hives we are getting a lot more. The seasons and weather and what we plant has a big impact on yields and, of course, we don’t harvest during the cold Winter months as bees need a hive temperature of 36°C to survive” explained Kellyanne. She sells her honey to local cafes, a gallery and has a stall at Luddenham Country Markets. It is available direct from her farm too. Kellyanne also uses her experience as a former Owner/ Director of a preschool to teach beekeeping and to educate the public about the importance of bees. “I teach Introductory Beekeeping to adults here at home and have hive tours, where people can suit up and see what it’s like before they do the morning course. I have been teaching Beekeeping by Zoom to children in childcare as well as some in-person visits prior to Covid and have just created a Beekeeping resource for preschoolers” she stated. She enjoys what she does and would like for more people to take up beekeeping. “I love watching the bees, seeing what they are up to, but mostly I enjoy sharing the knowledge to others. Traditionally, beekeeping has been an older male hobby, but I want everyone to know that anyone can do this with a licence and training” Kellyanne replied. The community can buy honey direct from her farm at 1 Farm Road in Mulgoa. Kellyanne’s Facebook page, Kelly Gianatti- Mulgoa Honey, can be messaged to collect orders.

PARENTS CORNER
Article Written + Submitted by: Monica Purcell | Family Facilitator Nepean Community & Neighbourhood Services W: www.nepeancommunity.org.au E: info@nepeancommunity.org.au
Preventing Purchases
Unwanted
In-App
Many parents now find unexplained transactions on their credit cards, thanks to the rise of “in-app purchases”. In-app purchases refers to buying goods from inside of an application on a mobile device. Most children’s apps and games are free to download but make their profit this way. A recent study found that 95% of games targeted at children have at least one advertisement. Despite this, children are not developmentally equipped to respond to manipulative marketing strategies used to push in-app purchases. Advertising can be positioned seamlessly into gameplay, making it difficult for children to know the difference. Many children don’t even know that they are spending real money in these games. Emotional strategies can particularly be difficult for children. On Roblox, many in-game items are advertised as “for a limited time only”, creating pressure to buy now or miss out. Peer pressure also contributes heavily to Roblox purchases as the game has a hot topic in the school yard. While regulators get to grips with the issues, there are unfortunately few protections for parents who find themselves out of pocket for their children’s in-app purchases. Parents are often refused refunds by their financial institutions, the app’s carrier Apple Store or Android Play Store, or the app’s creator. Therefore, prevention is better than cure! It is important to ensure you are supervising children’s use of devices, especially for children under 5 years old. Children need support and guidance to discern and manage online advertising. It is important for children to express their wants, but we all must learn to manage the disappointment of not getting something we had our heart set on. Make sure you lock or set up two-step authentication for inapp purchases on any devices used by children. If you have an iPhone or iPad, you can lock in-app purchases through your App Store settings. On Android devices, you can configure the settings in Google Play so that all purchases require twostep authentication, meaning you will receive an email or SMS requiring you to finalise a purchase. With COVID restrictions easing in all schools across NSW, Luddenham Public School has hit the ground running with special interest clubs for their students. The clubs range from a variety of student’s interests, for those that are technologically savvy, to those that like to get their hands dirty, and to those with interests in being creative through arts and craft, music as well as singing and dancing. Every club has its own designated day, so students can sign up to join as many clubs as they like. Talking to the students about what their favourite club is gets a range of answers. Some said the artistic clubs such as the Glee, Craft and Music Clubs were the best, whilst others preferred the Environment Club. The Minecraft Club, of course, is incredibly popular. These clubs have been created in consultation with the students and each club has its own project goals to achieve. That is not all that has been happening at Luddenham Public School. The school has been involved in numerous community events this term such as Harmony Day, the planting of eucalyptus trees in their school grounds to feed rescue koalas and a coffee and chat afternoon for teachers and parents. The school is looking forward to even more community events in the coming months. If you are thinking about enrolling your child at Luddenham Public School in 2023, feel free to drop into the school for a guided tour from the principal.

As we head into April, our thoughts go out to all those that were affected by the recent floods. No one could have predicted the devastating conditions that we endured. One thing is for sure and that is that we’ll continue to come together with strength and resilience to recover. This month is a time for both Easter and ANZAC Day. Important times to share with our loved ones, in reflection, hope and happiness. We continue to be amazed at the members of our community who inspire us all every day when sharing their stories. Like us, you’re probably scratching your heads wondering how we’re already onethird of the way through 2022. The cooler weather is coming, reminding us to rug up soon. Thank you for continuing to support our advertisers and small business. We couldn’t do this without you! Enjoy your Community News and as devastating as it has been, Dolly Parton once said, “If you want the rainbow, you gotta’ put up with the rain”.
