MONEY MATTERS pg. 20

There was some exciting news last month in Wallacia, with Elders Real Estate opening a new office. The office specialises in residential and rural listing and selling and property management in the local area. For Damian Sexton, who also owns Elders Penrith, this was a welcome return to where it all began 16 years ago. “This is where I started. I used to previously manage this office for 10 years for the old agency that was here. After buying and establishing the Elders Penrith office, I took the opportunity to come back, with the previous owners retiring. I’ve lived in the area for 7 years and I know the locals really well. It was a good fit he said. Now that Damian and his team have brought the trusted Elders brand to Wallacia, home buyers and sellers can expect great service. “One of the main goals to have an office here is to have the link between the Wallacia office and the Penrith office. Rural people here not only get an agent who is local but they get an agent who has a larger CBD location as well. The link between the two is imperative and works

Western Sydney to Get New High-Tech Jobs

ď ˛ď€ NSW Minister for Planning, Rob Stokes MP and Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies MP

Planning Minister Rob Stokes last month announced a new high-tech employment, education and housing project in Western Sydney was one step closer to reality, with the project passing a major planning milestone. Mr Stokes said the new Sydney Science Park at Luddenham has now passed through the Department of Planning and Environment’s Gateway, which determines if a proposal can go to the next stages of approval “This project will help generate high-end jobs and infrastructure; it will provide a new school and new retail stores the people of Western Sydney want and deserve, Mr Stokes said. “With the expansion of the Western Sydney Employment Area, we’ve locked in land to support 57,000 jobs. Creating

jobs, housing and education opportunities will help this region thrive. Member for Mulgoa Tanya Davies said the science park had a range of benefits for local residents. “This project means more people will be working and living locally enabling them to achieve a healthier work-life balance, Mrs Davies said. Member for Penrith Stuart Ayres said it was encouraging to see projects like the Sydney Science Park being put forward. “This is a strong sign of investment growth in Western Sydney, which is terrific to see, Mr Ayres said. Executive Director of Schools for the Catholic Diocese of Parramatta, Greg Whitby, welcomed the invitation to build a school in the Sydney Science Park. “Today’s schools need to be relevant and integrated into the life and work of the communities they serve. The Sydney Science Park is an opportunity for us to reimagine schooling and enable students to learn in an environment of innovation, creativity and entrepreneurship, Mr Whitby said. Mayor of Penrith, Ross Fowler OAM, said the project will be an important addition to the region. “A key feature of the plan is the inclusion of a new Town Centre, industrial research and development facilities, a school and a retail centre, all providing new employment opportunities in this area of Western Sydney, Mayor Fowler said. Penrith City Council will soon put the proposal on public exhibition, which will allow the community to provide feedback on the project. The department has worked closely with council to ensure the right mix of homes, jobs and education facilities, and that completion of new homes is coordinated with new infrastructure being delivered.

FAITH – ANGLICAN PARISH of MULGOA

P: 4774 0422 M: 0401 958 161 Sunday Service times: 8:30am St Thomas’ Mulgoa. 10:30am St Paul’s Warragamba. 7pm Glenmore Park Anglican Church Article by: Barry Roots Church Warden

St Thomas’ Mulgoa: Preserving Our Past; Building For the Future Many people in Mulgoa will already know that St Thomas’ and its land are now owned by the Sydney Anglican Schools Corporation. In 2014, the SASC, with assistance from the State Government, repaired and restored the church’s sandstone walls, repaired and repainted the internal church walls, and restored its doors and windows. In addition, new gardens were established on the northern side of the church. The main driveway into the church grounds is soon to undergo major repairs. Recently, a number of the St Thomas’ parishioners emptied the old church hall in readiness for its demolition. The derelict Rectory was also demolished in 2014 to deter trespassers and squatters. The church and its grounds have never looked better. Looking to the future, our Parish is preparing to build a new church building on its 3 acre property at 2265 Silverdale Rd, Silverdale. The building has been designed not only for church ministry but also as a community centre in times of bushfire. It will be a significant piece of community infrastructure. To help raise funds for the new Silverdale church, the Parish Council has decided to release a limited number of unoccupied niches on the south side of the columbarium wall at St Thomas’ for the interment of ashes. This might be of particular interest to current and former parishioners of St Thomas’. FREE ENTRY FREE PARKING FREE CHILDCARE

If anyone wishes to discuss the placement of ashes in the columbarium wall, or wishes to book a niche for some future date, please contact the church on 4774 0422 or 0401 958 161 for an application form. The application form identifies the conditions of interment as they apply at St Thomas’. St Thomas’ is a great blessing from God to His people here in the Mulgoa area, so please come and have a look at your local Anglican church. It is a very exciting time in the life of this church. Our Sunday Service is at 8:30am and you will be given a very warm welcome. Barry Roots Church Warden (Article submitted and written by)

FAITH – WARRAGAMBA BAPTIST CHURCH

QUICK FACTS Wallacia

Article by: Lyndon Rumsey P: 4774 1476 M: 0417174455 W: www.warragambabaptist.org.au Sunday Service: 9.30 am

Pastors Corner Whilst on leave recently, I had the opportunity to meet with Debbie, a woman in her early 50’s, living in rural New South Wales. Debbie as a fourteen year old had joined a church youth group that my wife and I had commenced all those years ago. Debbie talked about those times just like they had happened recently, reminding us that we had helped her to find faith in Jesus Christ, as Lord and Saviour of her life. Meeting with Debbie made me reflect on those times, the good and the not so good parts of living in that rural town. Sometimes it is good to remember past times, happy memories, significant people and times when life was so full of promise. But of course we all have those other periods in our lives, times that were more difficult, times when we grieved over the loss of those that we love, times when important relationships were broken apart, then there are those bad choices that we have made, failures that affected our finances, careers and families. Our conversations with Debbie made me reflect on significant people and friends that have impacted my life. Good friends are hard to find, they are the type of people that love you no matter what is happening, they are honest, loyal and open with you, not always telling you what you like to hear, instead bravely letting you know when your attitude “stinks”, good friends are people that support you and want the best things in life for you. I will be ever thankful for friends who helped me find faith in God because they cared, and I was rewarded by discovering Jesus is my best friend. In John 15:15 Jesus said “No longer do I call you servants, for a servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I heard from My Father I have made known to you.” Jesus is our friend, he always wants the best for us, he believes in each of us, when others give up. Very importantly, Jesus forgives us, when others would walk away from us. If you don’t know Jesus as your friend, but rather you just know, what others have told you about him, I would like to meet with you, and introduce you to the best friend you will ever know. God bless, Lyndon Rumsey (Article submitted and written by)

Wallacia Welcomes New Elders Office extremely well for all the locals to attract more buyers to what is a smaller area as far as population goes. We can source buyers through the Penrith office to help the Wallacia office with their properties. “Ultimately, more attention, higher prices and better competition on their properties” explained Damian. Damian Sexton has experience in all aspects of real estate, including large projects such as residential unit complexes, land selling and sub division work. He has also managed large sales and property management teams. Helping Back-pain from Ankylosing Spondylitis Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is an inflammatory arthritis of the spine and other joints. It affects up to 2% of Australians, is three times more common in men than women & usually appears between 15 and 45 years.1 AS starts with pain & stiffness in the sacroiliac (SI) joint (between the spine & pelvis) but can affect other areas of the spine, the hips, shoulders, eyes, skin, bowel, chest & even lungs. Eventually the whole axial skeleton of a person with long term AS can become fused. 2 Nobody really knows why people get AS, but the overwhelming evidence suggests that people inherit susceptibility genes from their parents, then get AS via an infection, that alters bowel function leading to immune dysregulation and autoimmunity. 3 Ninety percent of people with AS have a gene called HLA-B27. 3 HLA-B27 is a perfectly normal gene found in 8% of the general population and no more than 2% of people born with this gene ever get spondylitis. So the gene itself does not cause spondylitis, but people with HLA-B27 are simply more susceptible to getting spondylitis. 4 People with AS often have what looks like ‘Crohn’s disease’ - bloody ulcers in the intestines with cramping and diarrhea. 3 The medical literature lists at least 14 different micro-organisms which can act as possible triggers and though still controversial, it is thought by many, that infection with these organisms can lead to gastro-intestinal changes, triggering commencement of AS symptoms. 3 Currently, there is no known cure for ankylosing spondylitis5, but various medications such as analgesics, anti-inflammatories, bisphosphonates and drugs called DMARDs & bDMARDS are used by doctors to reduce symptoms and manage the pain. 2 At the clinic we have had some success in treating people with AS by determining & treating possible infective organisms, altering diet to optimize nutrition and immunity, then using adjunct treatments including massage & dry needling to reduce inflammation and remove the need for ongoing AS medications. If you’d like to know more see my advert above in this paper, and give me a call at the clinic.

Admire Beaute Bids Farewell to Mulgoa Salon

Owner, Dianne Saliba and the Admire team. Images supplied.

After nearly 7 years, Admire Beaute said goodbye to its Mulgoa salon late last month. For Owner Dianne Saliba, it was a hard decision to close the doors on the local salon, “The Mulgoa salon was my flagship store and what I liked to think of as my baby. It allowed me to form a relationship with the local area and clients, whom I can now call great friends. It wasn’t an easy decision closing its doors but it was something that needed to be done to further the business and continue to deliver high standards to my growing clientele” said Dianne. Although the Mulgoa salon has closed, both Admire Beaute Wallacia and Admire Beaute Luddenham will continue to operate, giving its customers even more reasons to visit. “Our Wallacia and Luddenham salons will certainly benefit from this. It will open the doors for further expansion and the investment

of better equipment and set up, as well as having more staff rostered on at the same time, catering for the needs of bridal party’s and larger group bookings” Dianne explained. The Admire Group has plans to expand in the future, opening further stores and continuing to grow in the Western Suburbs. Not only will it continue to deliver award winning service to all of its customers, but the company will also introduce its own product line. As the Admire Beaute salon in Mulgoa closed its doors for one last time, it brought a tear to Dianne’s eye. Thinking about the experiences that were had over the past few years brought a smile back to her face, “For me, the highlight of having the Admire Beaute Mulgoa salon was the wonderfully loyal and supporting locals” finished Dianne.

Mulgoa Country Market Day

Article by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) Nepean Community & Neighbourhood Services P: 0409 986121 or 47218520 E: narelle@nepeancommunity.org.au FaceBook: Parenting In Penrith Blog: handsheartsminds.wordpress.com

It’s almost here! On Sunday 23rd August, Mulgoa Public School will host their annual Country Market Day. The day starts at 10am till 3pm. This year promises to bring lots of exciting, new things. A fantastic day for everyone! There will be live entertainment throughout the day, including local dance & gymnastic groups & junior vocalists. Thanks to Bunnings, FREE face painting will be available and a FREE activity, with give aways, thanks to Rashay’s Pizza Pasta Grill. Some great additions include Channel 9’s Today Show Jeep and the Vintage FM Cruiser, carnival rides - giant wave slide, tea cups & ferris wheel, to name a few. Mulgoa Fire Brigade, Wild Ride Australia and Outback Steakhouse BBQ will be returning this year. With over 60 stalls, market lovers will enjoy new stalls as well as some old favourites. There will also be activities with some great prizes to be won. Country Market Day is organised by the school’s P&C and all profits go directly to the school. The funds raised this year, will enable some improvements to the main assembly area and to the children’s amenities block. Interactive Whiteboards and new sporting equipment are also high on the list, for the children to use and enjoy during their school day. Mulgoa Public School would like to thank all of their sponsors for supporting the event. A special thank you to Vicky Penna and Peta Dallas for their efforts and commitment to create such an exciting day for us all to enjoy!

I have been travelling around the community recently, meeting and chatting with parents. It has been great to hear what parents think about their role as parents, the joys and the struggles. And we all know that there are a lot of both. I also get a lot of enquiries from parents over the phone or via email, who are confused about what services are available to them. This month, I am listing some of the frontline support services that are available in the community to address your concerns, whatever level they may be. Who do you go to if you have a few specific concerns – the baby is not sleeping well, your 2 year-old is not sharing, your 4 year-old still doesn’t have a friend at preschool, your 7 year-old is too focused on screens, etc ? • Early Childhood Health clinics provide support with infant feeding and parenting, and developmental screening. • Karitane Careline 1300 227 464 7 days per week, regarding the care of young children • Tresillian Parents Help Line 1300 272736 7 days per week, regarding children aged 0 to 5 years • ParentLine – 1300 1300 52, 7 days per week, regarding children up to 18 years • Facebook and Blogs – social media is prolific. Check the qualifications of the person running the sites you are getting your advice from. I recently saw a video post on Facebook get thousands of ‘likes’ where the parent was clearly abandoning and laughing at her distressed child – horrific. Some good sites are Dr Justin Coulson, Dr Laura Markham, Dr Beth Onufrak, and Dr Darci Walker (Core Parenting) – note the ‘Dr’ in front of each of these names. You seem to be struggling with quite a few things. You may be yelling at the kids more often than you like. You and your partner may be arguing about how best to parent. You may not be confident in your skills as a parent. Or you just want to update your skills and learn more. • Triple P (Positive Parenting Program) has quite a few options available. You can attend a free Triple P group which will go for approximately two hours per week for 5 to 6 weeks. Triple P is also available online for those parents who can’t attend a group, and it costs$80. Penrith Community Health offers Triple groups in the evening. NCNS offers Teen Triple P. • The ‘Resourcing Parents’ website lists the parenting services available to parents throughout NSW. Go to http://www.resourcingparents.nsw.gov.au/. • Penrith Community Health offers counselling for parents, children, and young people. The intake phone number is 1800 222 608. There is no shame in asking for support or assistance. Parenting is a tough job. Children are complex. You think you have them all figured out and then they grow into another stage with a whole new set of challenges. As a grandmother of 6 said to me recently “it never hurts to learn more, and connect with others who are going through the same thing as you”. Next month, I will list the services available to parents who are concerned that their child may have a disability or disorder.

Warragamba Preschool Receives Exceeding Rating

Warragamba Pre-School staff. Image supplied.

Warragamba Preschool was involved in their first Assessment & Rating process in early June. The preschool was assessed and rated against 7 quality areas of the National Quality Standards (NQS). We were visited by an Assessor from the Department of Education and Communities who spent the day observing, talking to educators and gathering evidence on how they meet the NQS. Our comprehensive Quality Improvement Plan and the Assessment and Rating Process combined to define our rating. Warragamba Preschool is thrilled to announce they have been rated Exceeding in all seven quality areas of the National Quality Standard. Meeting the NQS is the benchmark and we are exceeding this in all seven areas! This is a fantastic achievement

Solar – Myths and Legends My name is James (Jim) Hill and I own and operate Nepean Solar Solutions, a locally based company in Penrith. I am a licensed electrical contractor and accredited Solar PV Designer and Installer. There are many misconceptions revolving around the renewable energy sector and in particular the Solar Energy market and I would like to clear a few of these up. First and most important of all. Sun The sun still rises and sets every day, day after day. The sun produces energy. No-one taxes sunlight (yet!). Government Rebates There are very attractive rebates in the form of STC’s available to you which are generally given at point of sale that bring the price of a typical 4.0kw system down to around $5,000.00. That is double the size and less than the price than 2011. Feed-In Tariffs These are very much smaller than those offered a few years ago and now tend to be around $0.05 per kWh. But we don’t sell it now we use what we produce. Electricity Costs Electricity now costs between $0.23 and $0.26 per kWhr. It is common knowledge that this will continue to rise in the future. In 2011 the same electricity cost $0.18 per kWhr resulting in an increase of over 30% in four years. How Do We Measure Your Solar Requirements? There are three main characteristics that determine the size of the system you require; • Current electricity usage. • Available Roof space. • Your budget. Call me now to start saving on your electricity! (See ad above).

Did You Know? The Sun will one day be about the size of Earth:

44 Regentville Rd, Jamisontown Cnr Abel Street

After its red giant phase, the Sun will collapse, retaining its enormous mass, but containing the approximate volume of our planet. When this happens, it will be called a white dwarf.

COUNSELLING CORNER

Article by: Linda Cassell from Psychology Works 4 All P: 4773 3057 or 0421 507 191 E: lindacassell@bigpond.com Remember last month we met Sandy and Mike? They were both super busy with the rigours of work and parenthood and felt the flame had gone out of their marriage. We are looking at three strategies to help rekindle their intimacy. Last month we looked at active listening where we keep our months closed while they speak and not jump to conclusions. This lesson morphs into the second lesson when we focus our attention on our partner as if seeing them for the first time. When we are able to become fully aware of who our partner is in the present moment, we drop preconceived expectations. This allows our mate to feel like they truly matter and validates their emotions. This is not to suggest that we blow off important issues in order to keep harmony. Instead, it means that we build in breaks in the form of a ‘timeout‘ when they are necessary and become aware when we are falling into old, unhealthy communications patterns. So our challenge for greater intimacy is to stay in the present moment and keep our mouths closed and our eyes and ears open and really see the person in front of us as if it is the first time we have met. Use a Beginners Mind Focus your attention on your spouse as if you are seeing them for the first time. This mindful approach is what some Buddhist teachers call a Beginners Mindset. Using this method, you purge

your consciousness of toxic thoughts about your spouse and free yourself of negative energy. It will not always be possible to keep a beginners mind for long periods of time but even if you can do this for a few moments, you will be creating positive change. Over the course of time, this can shift your perspective through the power of living in the here and now.

Ten Steps to Reduce Winter Air Pollution Wollondilly residents are being asked to help improve winter air quality by checking they are using their wood heaters correctly. Wood fires provide a pleasant winter atmosphere in your home, but incorrect use of wood fire heaters can seriously affect our air quality. That ‘country living’ smoke haze that we associate with winter is actually quite bad for our health. Wood smoke can cause breathing difficulties, especially for asthmatics, young children and older people, and can lead to long term chronic health problems. So as temperatures keep dropping, we ask that you follow some simple steps when using your wood heater. If you use a wood heater, steps you can take to make a difference to the air quality we breathe. These include: 1. Burn only dry, well-seasoned, chemically untreated wood. 2. Do not let your heater smoulder overnight – keep enough air in the fire to maintain a flame. 3. Use smaller logs instead of only one large log. 4. Do not pack the fire too full, as it starves the fire of oxygen and causes it to smoulder. 5. Store your wood under cover in a dry, ventilated area. Freshly cut wood needs to be stored for at least eight to twelve months. 6. Never burn painted or treated wood or rubbish. 7. Use plenty of dry kindling to get the fire burning quickly and brightly, the faster you can get the fire going the less smoke there will be. 8. Check the outside of your chimney - if there is visible smoke, increase the airflow to the fire. 9. Regularly remove ash and unburned coals from the hearth of the fire. 10. Ensure your chimneys and flues are cleaned out once a year. If Council receives complaints about the misuse of a wood fire and it is found to be causing a nuisance, a smoke abatement notice may be issued preventing the use of the fire. For further information please see the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) website www.epa. nsw.gov.au/woodsmoke.

No Doesn’t Always Mean No Banks assess loan applications based on a complex series of criterion known as Credit Policy and as I’ve written before Credit Policies are constantly changing. Not only that, Credit Policies can vary greatly from one bank to the next. Things like your income, type of income, expenses, liabilities, children, purpose of loan, savings history, credit record, even whether you are single, married or defacto are considered along with dozens of other factors to determine if a loan will be approved and how much can be borrowed. Concerned about the high level of investor activity in the market, the banking watchdog APRA (the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority) has been warning the banks to reduce the number of investment loans that they are approving or face the introduction of tougher lending regulations. To keep APRA happy, most of the Banks have now made changes to their Credit Policies making it tougher to get a loan. Unfortunately, many people think that if their bank declines their loan or won’t lend them the amount that they need, they think that all banks are the same. Nothing could be further from the truth. Due to the differing Credit Policies some banks will lend where others wont. Some banks will lend hundreds of thousands more than others. Then there are the non-bank lenders over whom APRA has no authority. At Great Aussie Dream, we go to great lengths to stay up to date with the latest Credit Policies so that we can provide our clients with the right finance that suits their needs. If you’ve been knocked back by your bank or want to avoid a rejection, give us a call on 4733 8592.

There will be over 150+ exhibitors showcasing dog products and services in Australia, with the launch of a New Products Zone at this year’s show. It’s like a giant supermarket for dogs and a great opportunity to spoil your fur-kids with loads of

show specials and free samples. There’s also free vet, training and grooming advice, free face-painting, a Pawlaroid Parlour and even a doggy bookshop! North Ryde’s Small Animal Specialist Hospital (SASH) will also be running an educational, hands on interactive (mock) vet surgery for all our aspiring, next generation (kids!) veterinarians. Celebrity veterinarian’s will be providing educational talks and interactive demonstrations, including Dr Katrina & The Wonderdogs, Dr Lisa Chimes (Bondi Vet), James & Anthony (Village Vets Australia on the The LifeStyle Channel) and Laura Vissaritis (Dognitive Therapy) as MC. With a wide array of useful tips, advice and guidance on topics that really matter to dog owners and lovers, you’ll leave the show with the reliable information you need for a healthier, happier dog. The Rose-Hip Vital Arena will be bursting with high energy and endless action as some of Australia’s most talented canines, including Dr Katrina Warren’s Wonderdogs, present live doggy demonstrations including Agility, Flygility, Flyball, and Frisbee shows. An Explosive Detective Dog (EDD) demo will also be presented by the Australian Defence Force simulating a mock check point in a war scenario. Qantas Welcome Aboard program co-host, David Whitehill will introduce all the action as the arena’s new daily MC. Please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital. Call 4736 2027 to make an appointment. Check us out on Facebook and online at www.orchardhillsvet. com.au.
