WWIB Introduce Pay It Forward Initiative
Wollondilly has had more than its fair share of challenges from forced evacuations, homes and businesses lost to both bushfires and floods and now impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Being a not-for-profit organisation, the Wollondilly Women In Business (WWIB) network is doing it’s best to support not just it’s members, but their local business community at large. Michelle Legg, Founder and President stated, “Our network is based on support, inspiration, education and love for the women in our community who are at the forefront of family business, as sole operators, in shop fronts, as consultants, trades, contractors and administrative professionals,
they are a huge cross section covering the Shire”. WWIB has recently launched the Pay It Forward Initiative. The purpose of the Pay It Forward Initiative was to direct the Wollondilly community to the WWIB member’s directory on their website www.wwib.com.au. WWIB hopes to encourage people to buy a Pay It Forward gift, whether it’s a product or service for colleagues, family, or friends. In essence, purchasing from these businesses keeps the support local and helps maintain them through these troubled times. Educating the community of the many wonderful businesses available within the Wollondilly Shire is sure to benefit everyone. For more information, visit www.wwib.com.au or www.facebook.com/WollondillyWomenInBusinessNetwork.

One of the biggest challenges when in lockdown during the pandemic has been exercise. Restrictions have meant that gyms have been unable to open, and we have not been able to train outside of home with family and friends. Wallacia personal trainer, Jessica McKenzie of Get Fit With Jess, has some tips to help us stay fit and healthy at home. There are basic exercises that can be done from the comfort of your home that will assist with your fitness. “Squats, step ups, lunges, pushups, planks and tricep dips are all great, no equipment body weight exercises that will build and maintain strength. You can start your planks and pushups on the wall. Make your way slowly to the ground by finding lower points around your home, such as chairs, steps or retaining walls” said Jessica. It’s important to keep your mind positive and your body healthy during lockdown. “Definitely don’t stop moving. Set aside at least 30 minutes everyday to exercise. Prepare a workout to complete, listen to music you love and get sweaty. Trust me, you’ll feel great” she said. “Set a weekly plan and schedule workouts. If you need help to create workouts, use social media or YouTube. Get outside in the sunshine and run or walk as often as possible. If you’re working from home, go for a walk in your lunch break as it’s the best way to boost your energy levels to make it through the afternoon. Most importantly, don’t give in to unhealthy food habits. Eat good and you’ll feel great” Jessica continued. Jessica has been working in the fitness industry for the past 7 years and she enjoys sharing her knowledge with the local community and helping her clients. “I absolutely love the wonderful people I meet and sharing my love of exercise. Seeing my clients become fit, strong and confident is the best” she ended. r

Is Your Child Highly Sensitive? Is your child easily overwhelmed? Does your youngster find life changes particularly challenging? Would you describe your son or daughter as “shy” or “cautious”? Is he or she sensitive to bright lights or loud noises? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, then you may have a highly sensitive child. Some children are born more sensitive than others. We don’t know why but researchers think it could be linked to individual differences in the brain and sensory processing system. Highly sensitive children are very “tuned in” to what they can hear, see, smell, taste, or touch. They also tend to experience emotions at a more intense level and for longer periods of time. High sensitivity is a personality trait that researchers estimate affects between 12 – 15% of the general population. While being highly sensitive can create difficulties in life, these types of children can do well with a little extra TLC and understanding from their caregivers. Highly sensitive kids have many gifts to share with the world, including creativity, compassion, innovative problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and an extraordinary aptitude for deep thinking and reflection. You help your highly sensitive child shine by following some of these tips: 1. Support them to see their sensitivity in a positive light. 2. Convey confidence that they are strong enough to deal with what is ahead. 3. Provide opportunities for creative expression such as art making or writing. 4. Support them to move outside their comfort zone in small, manageable steps. 5. Expect them to take a little longer to adjust to changes in their life. 6. Help them use their sensory system as a tool for calm by identifying soothing things they can see, hear, touch, and feel when they are distressed. Examples may include white noise, soft blankets or toys, or images of nature. If you are interested in learning more about supporting highly sensitive children, check out the writing of Dr Elaine Aron on hsperson.com and Dr Deborah McNamara on mcnamara.ca.

Latest @ Luddenham by Wayne Willmington Once again, COVID 19 is causing lockdowns and cancellations of all events and meetings. Also creating confusion, as the Liverpool Council section of Luddenham had more stringent restrictions and locals were unsure if they could come into the Penrith side of Luddenham. It is hoped that the lockdown will end on the 30th of July, in the meantime construction has stopped on the Western Sydney Airport as well as the Northern Road upgrade. At the time of going to print, still no confirmation on the new name for the Old Northern Road in Luddenham, but I can confirm that Transport NSW is going to hand the road back to Penrith and Liverpool Councils. Luddenham Progress Association is working with both Councils and Transport NSW to get the road brought back up to standard before the handover. This includes resurfacing and fixing up the area where Park Road and the Old Northern Road meet (the two triangle areas). The NSW Government has said that Glenmore Park High School is almost at capacity. With the catchment areas of Warragamba, Silverdale, Wallacia, Luddenham and the new areas in Bradford, Bringelly, and Rossmore about to receive exponential residential growth, a new high school will need to be planned. Luddenham Progress Association has written to both local State Members, asking that the new public high school be built in the Luddenham Village area. Liverpool Council has agreed to WSA Co’s request to close Adams Road for up to six months to allow full reconstruction from the new Northern Road to Anton Road. Western Sydney Airport Co is paying for the upgrade, as it will be the route for fuel tankers delivering to the Airport fuel farm. Liverpool Council has also approved the implementation of traffic calming devices on Adams Road between the New and Old Northern Roads that include a pedestrian refuge and reducing the speed limit to 60kmh. r Equipment at the Airport has come to a stop due to COVID | Image: www.skyviewaerial.com.au

Mulgoa Rural Fire Brigade started its recruitment drive through their Facebook page at the beginning of July, to add new firefighters to their enthusiastic and dedicated team of volunteers. Firefighter volunteers are trained to respond to a variety of situations such as bush and grass fires, house and structure fires, and motor vehicle accidents. Unfortunately, due to Covid restrictions, the fire brigade has been unable to open their doors to have a recruitment information session. During these sessions, prospective volunteers get a chance to meet the members, ask questions they may have about volunteering and get to find out more about becoming a member of the NSW Rural Fire Service. Why volunteer you may ask? People volunteer with the Rural Fire Service (‘RFS’) for a wide range of reasons. They can range from wanting to protect their families and friends to wanting to give back to their community. For many members, being part of the NSW Rural Fire Service runs in the family, as was the case with Captain Jason Lonard. Jason joined the RFS in 2006, when he was 12 years old, becoming a member like his father, Group Captain Scott Lonard and his grandfather, John Lonard (who was a former Deputy Captain and member of Mulgoa Rural Fire Brigade). If you are interested in joining the Mulgoa Rural Fire Brigade, please send them a message through their Facebook page, email them at mulgoastation@gmail.com or fill out an expression of interest form found at https://www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/volunteer/ volunteering-with-the-rfs.

RSPCA Cupcake Day Grab your apron and preheat those ovens – Cupcake Day is returning on Monday 16th August. Each year, more than 124,000 animals turn to the RSPCA looking for help. This year, you and your utensils have the power to serve up love, care and forever homes to each and every one. Whether you’re whipping up doughnuts, lamingtons, brownies or traditional cupcakes, the funds you raise at your Cupcake Day event help rescue, rehabilitate and rehome animals in need all over the country. Invite your workmates, schoolmates and regular mates along for a sweet-tastic, slobber-filled gathering. With a pinch of community and a cup of good conversation, your Cupcake Day event has the potential to bake real change. Unfortunately, due to the Coronavirus crisis, we will not be hosting a Cupcake Day this year. So sad! We will have to eat all of the cupcakes ourselves!! We have a fundraiser page on the RSPCA website for online donations. We will match all donations that we receive!! So bake away and donate to the RSPCA. https://www.rspcacupcakeday.com.au/fundraisers/ camillebrandt Share some of your photos on our Facebook page of your baking successes, masterpieces and failures!!! The RSPCA is the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, a non-profit, community based charity that works to prevent cruelty to animals by actively promoting their care and protection.
The RSPCA is not an agency of the Australian Government and therefore relies on the generosity of the community – through animal adoptions, volunteering, event participation, donations, fundraising, corporate partnerships, corporate support, bequests and grants – to support its vital daily work. Go to the RSPCA website for more information, https://www. rspcacupcakeday.com.au/
PAWGUST by Guide Dogs Australia PAWGUST is a fundraiser that encourages people and their pooches to brave the cold and walk or run at least 30 minutes every day in August to raise funds for Guide Dogs. The funds you raise during PAWGUST will go towards helping breed, raise and train Guide Dogs so that we can create a world where everyone who needs a Guide Dog, has a Guide Dog. It costs in excess of $50,000 to breed, raise and train just one Guide Dog puppy and with hundreds being trained each year, every dollar raised throughout PAWGUST counts. PAWGUST participants (and their dog/s) will experience physical and mental health benefits from the challenge - leading to happier, healthier lives. HEALTH MATTERS
Article Written + Submitted by: Andreas Klein Nutritionist + Remedial Therapist from Beautiful Health + Wellness P: 0418 166 269
Blood Zinc Level - Is it Really a Good Measure of Zinc Deficiency? A nutrition patient attended our clinic recently with numerous symptoms. This included reflux, oesophageal inflammation and mucus accumulations, chronic sore mouth and throat, taste and voice changes, difficulty breathing, dry eyes, continual anxiety and agitation, mild depression, inability to exercise, severe insomnia and daytime fatigue, low lymphocytes, dry-eye, and significant weight-loss. Medical investigations had been unable to determine any cause. The patient admitted to having a strict vegan diet for some years, in an attempt to improve previously diabetic blood sugar levels. Veganism, however, significantly increases risk of zinc deficiency. Even so, research shows that 66-90% adults today have inadequate zinc intake with wide-ranging health effects. Many of the symptoms exhibited by this patient are associated with inadequate systemic zinc yet blood-serum-zinc levels were normal. Could this patient have a normal serum zinc but still have zinc deficiency? Reduced or altered taste sensation is an indicator zinc deficiency. In 2004, researchers divided patients with taste impairments into two groups based on whether their blood-serum-zinc levels were normal or low. They compared them to volunteers with normal
taste-sensation, additionally using an alternative test (the ‘apoACE/holo-ACE’ ratio) to determine zinc sufficiency/deficiency of all participants. In a further study, all patients with taste-sensation changes were then given zinc supplements. All patients had significant improvements in taste-sensation and this improvement correlated with improved ACE ratio, but not with blood-serum zinc levels. Researchers concluded that ‘zinc deficiency is a predominant factor underlying taste impairment and ACE ratio may be a more sensitive indicator of zinc nutrition than blood-serum-zinc concentration’. In short, serum-zinc-level which is the main test currently used in clinical practice is a poor tool for determining zinc deficiency. With the approval of the patient’s general practitioner, the patient’s dietary pattern was changed to one that provided excellent levels of all important nutrients (including zinc). They were given some supplements to help correct key nutrient deficits quickly, and symptoms resolved over the next 3 months. If you have a chronic condition that you’ve had difficulty resolving, feel free to give the clinic a call.

Pastor’s Corner Another long period of lockdown, forcing us to deal with all those issues that we all wish would go away. How are you managing this time? I hope that you are keeping safe and well and finding the restrictions not too onerous. Hopefully, this is for a relatively short period of time. During these last school holidays, my wife and I had planned to holiday in Queensland. But with border closures, we cancelled those plans and instead booked time in Ballina, where we used to live. We arrived in Ballina on the Saturday; the day lockdown started. So, we returned home and spent the remainder of the holiday period at home before both of us returned to work. What a disappointment! None of our plans worked out the way we wanted them to. The media reports daily on new cases. How many were isolating or not isolating, with the South West of Sydney the main hotspot. Informative, but also a bit depressing. Whilst we need to be informed and to follow the regulations, our thoughts need to remain positive. A well-known passage of the scriptures, that reminds me to keep my life in perspective is Psalm 23: “The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil, my cup overflows. Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever”. My prayer for each of you is that you will find green pastures and quiet waters that restore your soul. In doing so, you will be drawn to the source, Jesus who provides goodness and love all the days of your life.

HELPING THE FAMILIES OF OUR GREAT COMMUNITY FOR 40 YEARS As Silverdale’s Matthew Reid prepares for his epic trek from Glenmore Park to Canberra for the Walk for Terry Fox Charity Fundraiser next month, the inspirational local has just reached an amazing milestone of raising $20,000 for The Children’s Hospital at Westmead. He is striving to reach his ultimate goal of $40,000 raised by the time he sets out for the charity walk on Monday 6th September. Matthew will be starting from Glenmore Park High School, with the walk taking 10 days to complete, finishing at the High Commission of Canada in Canberra, and covering just under 300 kms. “So far, we have raised $20,038 which is slightly over halfway. Our goal is to raise $40,000 for The Children’s Hospital at Westmead. All donations are greatly appreciated. Even if it’s $10 or $20, it all adds up” explained Matthew to the Mulgoa Valley Gazette. Matthew has organised two Walk for Terry Fox charity events at local schools this year. The first was at Mulgoa Public School on 7th May which saw the local school become the first school in Australia to participate in a walk to support Walk for Terry Fox. The second was Glenmore Park High School on 16th June. A third walk is planned at Warragamba Public School for this month (subject to Government COVID restrictions at the time). A special sports luncheon was held at Wallacia Hotel with Jeff Fenech, Australian Champion Boxer the guest in May. The event was a great success, raising over $6,000. With only a number of weeks to go until his charity walk to Canberra, Matthew’s training schedule is in full swing in preparation for the event. “I have been conditioning my body for the walk. I started with walking 5 days a week, for 1 hour a day during the week and 2 hours a day on the weekend. This will be increased to 7 days a week, for 2 hours a day during the week and 3 hours a day on the weekend” he stated. To support Matthew in his quest and to help him reach $40,000, visit his fundraising page at https://www.bandagedbear.org.au/ fundraisers/httpswwwfacebookcomevents379120765961877. Emergency Services
Last month at this time, we were in the early days of the lockdown announced across Greater Sydney. I spoke about Winter being the ideal time to hibernate and catch up on your Netflix list enjoying delicious winter-rich meals and staying toasty by the heater. And here we are (as I write this) almost a month later, and I’ve all but exhausted my Netflix list and moved onto Stan. I’ve picked a few good books to catch up on some well overdue ‘reading’ time and in a Covid safe manner, set about hitting my daily exercise goals. As a family we’ve used this time to explore new and interesting things to do, including online cooking and art classes. It’s been a great opportunity to catch up on all those long overdue sorting and organising tasks that we never have time to do. Take each day as it comes. Times are tough for many. Try to draw on the positives. We will get through this. ‘Life is not about being rich, being popular, being educated or being perfect. It’s about being real, humble and kind’ remember that. Time to catch up on all the latest happenings in Your Community News.
