future ahead of us. The next phase is focussed heavily on bringing our infrastructure to the standard expected by the community and also shaping the future growth that is coming our way to make Wollondilly even better. “I am honoured to be able to lead the organisation through this exciting period,” said Mr Taylor.

Checks on adults working with children and young people in residential care will be strengthened in Wollondilly through a significant investment from the NSW Government. The Residential Care Workers Register is a recommendation by the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse that is now in place. Minister for Families and Communities Natasha Maclaren-Jones said the Register will help prevent unsuitable residential care workers moving between service providers undetected. “The Register will help keep our most vulnerable children and young people safer,” Mrs Maclaren-Jones said. “While most workers in this area do the right thing and have the children’s best interests at heart, this new Register will prevent workers who pose a risk to young people in residential care from moving between agencies. “It will require out-of-home care providers to hold relevant information about people working as residential care workers, which can be shared between agencies. The Register is another tool for agencies to make sure people who are unsuitable to care for children can’t change agencies to avoid any transgressions or misconduct. The new requirements will apply to residential care workers currently working, or applying for jobs in the outof-home care sector. The sector has come together in support of this important new initiative. This new safety measure builds on existing screening tools such as the Working with Children Check and National Criminal Record Check. Given the vulnerability of this group of young people, this Register is a welcome addition to support their safety. r Article: Nathaniel Smith MP

Wollondilly Council Reappoints CEO For Next Five Years Wollondilly Shire Council has reappointed Ben Taylor as CEO for a further five years from July 2022. People With Disability Urged To Get Booster

“His leadership of the organisation through bushfires, floods and Covid has been outstanding, but it has been his ability to build staff engagement, integrity and improve organisational performance that makes the biggest difference for our community.” “In just three years we’ve moved from a real low to being in the top 10% of Councils for staff engagement, and this translates directly to demonstrated performance improvement and high service quality.” “Under Ben’s leadership Council has delivered a huge range of new capital works across the Shire, put on more operational crews, invested in modern plant and equipment, reduced our infrastructure backlog, introduced a digital customer service portal, improved DA determination times, established a business investment concierge service and cared for our staff and community through challenging times.” “There is more work to do, but already we’re going from strength to strength and seeing faster responses to road repairs, maintenance blitzes across the Shire, have a fully-funded long term financial plan as well as capital works program and a refreshed Organisational Framework so we can effectively manage our growth for the future.” “Working with Ben we also have a great plan in place to improve our assets, particularly our roads, and transform our services to the highest standards”. Ben Taylor thanked the Council for its strong confidence in supporting him to continue in the role. “Over the last nearly three years, I have found this role both immensely rewarding and challenging. “Wollondilly is a wonderful place, full of amazing people with an extraordinary

With a new wave of COVID-19 cases continuing to increase across the state, people with disability are encouraged to get the latest COVID-19 vaccine booster dose. Minister for Families and Communities and Minister for Disability Services Natasha Maclaren-Jones said people with disability can be more vulnerable to the harmful effects of COVID-19. “Protecting people with disability is vital as they can be at greater risk of developing serious illness if they become infected,” Mrs Maclaren-Jones said. “Vaccination is readily available at GPs and pharmacies and we are urging everyone to book in without delay.” COVID-19 booster doses are recommended for anyone 16 years and older who had their last dose of a primary course at least three months ago. The COVID-19 vaccine can be taken at the same time as the influenza vaccine, which people with disability are also being urged to take. While the free flu vaccination program in NSW ends on 17 July 2022, those considered to be at higher risk of severe illness from influenza remain eligible for a FREE flu vaccine beyond this date, under the National Immunisation program. This includes: • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people from six months of age • Children from six months to under five years of age • People with serious health conditions (including severe asthma, diabetes, cancer, immune disorders, obesity, kidney, heart, lung or liver disease) • Pregnant women • People aged 65 and over. The NSW Government is also providing up to 7.9 million rapid antigen tests (RATs) to people with disability and other vulnerable community members with the program recently expanded to 31 October 2022. Big Red Wedding Local Marriage Celebrant Janice Bradley of Wallacia has officiated many weddings over the years. Her latest is certainly one to remember, with the bride and groom celebrating an outback wedding on top of a sand dune in the Simpson Desert. Anthony and Karen Maximui of Victoria exchanged their vows in front of Jan, whilst at the Big Red Bash, located 35kms west of Birdsville in Queensland last month. The Big Red Bash is an open-air music festival spread out over three days in the desert, described as the most remote concert in the world. This year’s festival was headlined by Jimmy Barnes. Over 100 people were on hand to watch the wedding ceremony, with the desert plains of the Munga-Thirri National Park the amazing backdrop. “The couple put a notice out on social media asking about a marriage celebrant who could help. I was recommended by someone and as it turned out, my husband (Greg) and I had plans to attend the Big Red Bash” explained Jan. The wedding received media attention including a television crew who were on hand to watch the nuptials. “It was a truly amazing wedding. I loved the whole experience, and it was great to be a part of it” Jan smiled. Surprisingly, this was the second wedding that Jan had officiated at the Big Red Bash, with the first being in 2018. She has attended the annual music festival in Birdsville with her husband five times since 2016. Latest @ Luddenham by Wayne Willmington The long-awaited toilet block at the Luddenham Progress Hall is finally complete. This is after delays, due to COVID and wet weather. The toilet block was built offsite by Elite Buildings at Bringelly, consisting of a disabled and three unisex toilets as well as two wash basins. After it was completed, it was delivered and attached to the rear of the hall. Thanks Tanya Davies MP for arranging the NSW Government Grant. The hall did have an old tin toilet, and when the Council built the toilet and shower block, the Progress Association paid for a concrete path to them. It’s a great asset having the toilets attached to the hall, with entry through the hall. In the middle of the wet weather and floods, somebody decided to tip a couple of loads of hot mix asphalt in Campbell Street. This was such a shame, as it goes hard very quickly. I know a lot of residents would have accepted the asphalt, instead of it being wasted. August is generally the month of Annual General Meetings, and it will see the Luddenham Progress Association have their AGM on Wednesday 3rd August, in the hall at 8pm. It will be chaired by the Community Commissioner Professor Roberta Ryan. The Show Society will hold their AGM on Sunday the 28th August at 12 noon at the Showground. Both organisations are looking for new members. The Luddenham Progress Association has written to Western Sydney Airport Co once again, asking them to withdraw their objection to the NSW Department of Planning proposal for new housing in Luddenham outside the noise contours. The Luddenham Progress Association say “is in contrast to your own EIS. In the absence of a clear explanation of the rationale for the objection, you have caused a stalemate on decisions about the future of the Village and deep distress in the local community”. “The ongoing growth and prosperity of Luddenham Village has extensive support across the community. On behalf of our community, the Luddenham Progress Association is asking WSA Co to please withdraw your objection to the NSW Planning vision for Luddenham Village”. Don’t forget the Luddenham Uniting Church have markets on the first Saturday of each month. The Country Markets at the Showground are on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of each month. Also, Dogs in the Park are returning to the Showground on the 14th August and have a huge day planned. v [Top] Asphalt dumped in Campbell St [Centre] The new toilet block at the Hall [Left] Inside the toilet block | Images Supplied

Sweet As! Local Brooke Sweeney loves to bake for people, and it certainly shows in her amazing cakes. The Warragamba native is the proud owner of Sweeney’s Sweets. Brooke first started her business back in 2019, whilst home with her first daughter. “I have always loved feeding people. It’s the way I show people I care for them. The more people to feed the better! After years of baking desserts for the people I love, I finally listened to them and started Sweeney’s Sweets” said Brooke to the Mulgoa Valley Gazette. Her range of sweets include cakes, cupcakes, brownies, dessert cups, cheesecakes, and lemon tarts. The lemon tarts even have fresh lemons from her tree! She has studied a number of courses at the Australian Patisserie Academy and is always looking to gain new skills to add to her list. Brooke enjoys owning her own small business and the work that she does every day. “My business allows me to do what I love, while being at home with both my girls. I get to supply people with delicious sweets that will be shared with friends and family at the most special times. I think it’s wonderful that I get to be a part of that in some way” she smiled. So, what’s the secret to making the perfect cake you may ask? “The secret to making the perfect cake is having a good plan on what you need to do. Also, knowing when to walk away and stop fiddling with the cake” Brooke ended. FAITH – GRACE WEST ANGLICAN

Article Submitted by: Minister Steve Gooch Grace West Silverdale | P: 47331635 W: www.gracewest.church | A: 2265 Silverdale Rd, Silverdale NSW 2752 Service Times: Sundays @ 9.30am My wife Carol and I had a nice couple of days away. When we arrived home, I couldn’t find the house keys. I went through the options. Did I take them? Yes. Did I still have them while away? Yes. Did I pack them in my bag for departure? Yes. Then why can can’t I find them? After emptying out my luggage on the doorstep and searching through it, I decided to give up. Then Carol said, “Where is my phone?” After emptying her luggage on the doorstep and searching through it, she decided to give up. I walked onto the road to see if it fell out of the car. There it was on the ground! Finally, I checked one last place for my keys, my toiletries bag. There it was! Losing things is awful. Losing yourself is worse. But worst of all is losing direction spiritually. Not knowing where we have come from or where we are going with God. There is no need to fret about these things, for the Bible makes them clear. ‘In him (God) we live and move and have our being’ (Acts 19). We come from God and get our direction by God. Likewise, Jesus says, ‘I am the way the truth and the life’. If you want to find your way spiritually, then contact us at gracewest.church/enquiry and ask about our course on ‘finding your way’ beginning soon. r Image: www.pixabay.com HEALTH MATTERS

Is There a Food That Could Help Avoid and Possibly Even Help Clear Blood Clots? Blood clotting is vital to stopping blood loss. Inappropriate clotting can produce DVTs and pulmonary embolism, as we saw last month. Blood clots are formed from strands of a protein called fibrin, which is laid down then cross-linked to form an even stronger meshwork. Inappropriate clots occur when the balance between blood clot formation (clotting/anticlotting) and blood clot dissolving pathways are disturbed i.e., when factors leading to clot formation are inappropriately increased, and/or those leading to clot breakdown are decreased. In this way, 17,000 Australians suffer venous blood clots (VTE) annually. Regularly eating natto could help these people avoid and possibly aid resolving VTE. Natto is a tradition cheese-like food eaten by Asians for over 2,000 years. It contributes to the high life expectancy of Japanese people eating traditional diets. Natto is made from soybeans fermented with bacillus subtilis (variety natto) bacteria. In a 1990 Japanese study, researchers gave patients 200g of Natto, and showed clearly that eating natto significantly increases a person’s ability to break down blood clots for up to 8 hours after natto ingestion. During the soybean fermentation, bacteria produce large amounts of an enzyme called ‘nattokinase’ (NK), a potent clot-

8 August 2022 www.mulgoagazette.com.au

breaker. Rat studies show that NK is 5 times better at blood clot breaking than the body’s own clot breaking enzyme called plasmin. Once in the blood stream, NK helps dissolve bloodclots by: 1. breaking up cross linked fibrin directly 2. generating plasmin 3. degrading blood factors that stop plasmin formation NK also lowers plasma levels of factors that promote blood clot formation including fibrinogen, and clotting factors VII, and VIII, and it does all this with little to no side effects. Eating regular natto maybe a cheaper and better option as natto also contains significant levels of: 1. vitamin K1 - optimises blood anticlotting enzymes 2. vitamin K2 - keeps blood vessel walls flexible reducing atherosclerosis and VTE clot formation (these are linked) Finally, people eating natto including post-menopausal women, have been shown to improve bone strength. Here again, we see how important “eating the right foods” is to health and avoiding disease. If you have a health issue and would like to see how dietary change could benefit you, please give us a call at the clinic.

RSPCA Cupcake Day

Monday 15th August to Saturday 20th August 2022 Start salivating now – Cupcake Week is returning on Monday 15th August through to Saturday 20th August 2022. Pop in to donate and enjoy a cupcake (or two!) and even a ‘pupcake’ for your beloved pet. We have made ‘pupcakes’ which are dog friendly and do not contain any chocolate which is toxic to dogs. The RSPCA is the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, a non-profit, community based charity that works to prevent cruelty to animals by actively promoting their care and protection. Each year, more than 124,000 animals turn to the RSPCA looking for help. The RSPCA is not an agency of the Australian Government and therefore relies on the generosity of the community – through animal adoptions, volunteering, event participation, donations, fundraising, corporate partnerships, corporate support, bequests and grants – to support its vital daily work. Thank you for your support. Go to the RSPCA website for more information, https://www. rspcacupcakeday.com.au/

PAWGUST by Guide Dogs Australia PAWGUST is a fundraiser that challenges dog owners and their pooches to walk or run every day in August to raise funds for the Guide Dogs. The funds you raise during PAWGUST will go towards helping breed, raise and train Guide Dogs, so that they can create a world where everyone who needs a Guide Dog, has a Guide Dog. It costs in excess of $50,000 to breed, raise and train just one Guide Dog puppy and with hundreds being trained each year, every dollar raised throughout PAWGUST counts. PAWGUST participants (and their dog/s) will experience physical and mental health benefits from the challenge leading to happier, healthier lives. Limits and rules keep children safe and help them grow into responsible, moral, and thoughtful adults. They also help children develop behavioural and impulse control. There are absolutely times when you have to say “no” to your child, but as every parent knows, this is not always simple or pleasant. Every child needs to work out who they are as a unique individual. This is called ‘autonomy’ and it’s about deciding what you want and don’t want, like and don’t like, and making choices accordingly. Children aged between 18 months and 3 years especially need to flex their ‘autonomy’ muscles and that’s why we often hear a whole lot of “NO” from toddlers! At the same time, everything in a child’s life is largely decided for them – when and what they eat, what activities they do, who they see, when they sleep, and so on. As adults, we can sometimes forget this. This is not to say that children should be left to their own devices, there’s a good reason why responsible adults are in charge. But what we can do is support children to make choices where appropriate and safe. Consider your child’s age and stage of development when offering choices. For younger children, open-ended choices can be overwhelming, so start with offering 2 or 3 options. For example, we can offer a 2-year-old girl the option to wear her hair out or in a ponytail. For older children and young people, you will need to offer some ‘brain storming’ to support their decision-making process. Sit down together, identify all options, discuss the pros and cons of each, and then allow your child or teen to pick the best solution. Balance out your “no”s with “yes”s. Imagine if all you heard was “no”, you would feel pretty fed up too! We can get in a habit of automatically dismissing a child’s requests. Instead, try using a ‘yes with conditions’, for example, “yes, we can read a story after you’ve brushed your teeth”. When children are given plenty of developmentally appropriate opportunities to make decisions about the things that affect them, they don’t need to fight us on every “no”.

Warradale Athletes Shine Despite Short Season

What a dreadful season 2021/22 was! It wasn’t the one that Warradale Little Athletics Club had envisaged. With COVID restrictions and vaccine mandates delaying their start until December, they had decided to extend the season an extra six weeks. The persistent wet weather and ground closures caused many cancellations in the New Year and their season came to an end with the athletes only getting to do a total of five nights competition. Despite the disappointment of a short season, the club had some highlights including nine athletes representing them at the Central West Metropolitan Zone Championships in January, held at Smithfield. Charlotte, Isabella, Savannah, Lucy, Danny, Dominic, and Francesca competed to their best ability and all qualified through to the Regional Championships held in February at Campbelltown. Ethan and Noah in the Under 7’s competed in their first Zone Championships, and both came away with medals. The Under 7’s do not progress to the Regional Championships. Heidi joined the team to compete in the Multi-Class events at the Regional Championships. Their team of ten athletes competed with enthusiasm and showed great sportsmanship. Four of their Regional Representatives were able to qualify to compete at the State Championships, held in March at Homebush. Being in the top 24 of the State Championships was a great achievement and Heidi, Charlotte, Savannah, and Isabella showed why they were there, representing the club with great pride. Heidi and Savannah both achieved State medals. “In honour of one of our past members Lachlan Smith, who tragically died earlier this year, we created a memorial award in his name. At our presentation night, his parents Nigel and Jody, presented the award to the inaugural recipient for 2021/22 season, which was Sarah in the Under 11’s” said Annette Tillman of Warradale Little Athletics Club. The club is looking forward to getting back to a ‘normal’ season. One that is not controlled by restrictions and cancellations. One where the athletes get to compete on a regular basis in a fun, family-oriented atmosphere while building confidence and lifelong friendships. Registration for the 2022/23 season will open this month. The LGAs are Blacktown, Blue Mountains, Camden, Canterbury Bankstown, Campbelltown, Central Coast, Cessnock, Fairfield, Georges River, Hawkesbury, Hornsby, Kiama, Lithgow, Liverpool, Northern Beaches, Penrith, Shellharbour, Shoalhaven, Sutherland, The Hills, Wingecarribee, Wollondilly and Wollongong. Assistance is being provided through the jointly funded Commonwealth-State Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA). Minister for Emergency Management, Senator the Hon Murray Watt, said the flooding has led to a large number of evacuations throughout Metropolitan Sydney, the Hawkesbury, and the Central Coast, with major flood operations still ongoing. “We have seen some of these impacted communities being hit by floods for a third and fourth time in 18 months, which is extremely distressing to the residents of these communities,” Minister Watt said. “The Australian and New South Wales governments have worked very cooperatively through this latest flood emergency, to ensure defence and other resources were deployed early and fast. “Similarly, we’re now working hard together to make sure that impacted communities get the financial and other assistance they need as soon as possible.” New South Wales Minister for Emergency Services and Resilience and Minister for Flood Recovery, Steph Cooke, said significant recovery support would be required to help support communities once the major weather event passes. “This announcement will ensure immediate assistance is available to impacted communities, including assistance for people who have lost or had damage to their homes,” Ms Cooke said. Assistance available under the DRFA may include: • Help for eligible people whose homes or belongings have been damaged (eligibility criteria apply); • Support for affected local councils to help with the costs of cleaning up and restoring damaged road and essential public assets; • Concessional interest rate loans for small businesses, primary producers, and non-profit organisations; and • Freight subsidies for primary producers. For information on personal hardship and distress assistance, contact Service NSW on 13 77 88. To apply for a concessional loan or primary producer grant, contact the NSW Rural Assistance Authority on 1800 678 593 or visit www.raa.nsw.gov.au. Information on disaster assistance can be found on the National Recovery and Resilience Agency’s website at www. recovery.gov.au.

Firies Go Above and Beyond The recent floods saw our emergency services out on site working hard to keep us all safe. Heroic men and women who were going beyond the call of duty to help. This included our local firefighters from Fire and Rescue Warragamba, who undertook an extraordinary medical delivery in Wallacia. Fire and Rescue Warragamba had been called to help residents on Bents Basin Road in Wallacia who had been isolated due to the flood waters, needing food and medical supplies. The rising water had left Bents Basin Road inaccessible, and transport was unable to enter. With the supplies delivered from Oran Park to Warragamba Fire Station, firefighters Kelly, Jeremy, David, and Brett answered the call to deliver the supplies to the residents. The Fire and Rescue Warragamba firefighters drove their 4X4 tanker to Wallacia via local decommissioned roads before hiking for one kilometre to reach the properties! Their knowledge of the area when rescuing a dog in need during the last flood at Wallacia greatly assisted them when delivering the supplies. With the goods packed safely and dry in their backpacks, they were successfully delivered, despite the roads being closed. “Fire and Rescue are always prepared to help the local community. This includes any other areas where assistance is required such as working with our fellow emergency services members” explained Captain Davis of Fire and Rescue Warragamba to the Mulgoa Valley Gazette. On behalf of the local community, thank you to our emergency services who continue to go above and beyond in our times of need.

Last month I travelled interstate, and judging by the hustle and bustle at the airport - I wasn’t alone in doing so. While I thoroughly enjoyed my time away exploring a new city; after a cancelled flight and all the ensuing chaos, I must admit there was no better feeling than to return home to my own neighbourhood. There’s a certain level of comfort that comes with the familiarity of local people and places. A number of families within our community are still cleaning up after the devastation of the most recent floods. With the unpredictable and extreme weather events we have experienced of late, I know many will be pleased to see Winter behind us. Here at the District Gazette we’re always on the lookout for interesting stories about local people doing local ‘things’. If you have an interesting story idea, reach out - we’d love to hear from you! Enjoy this month’s read! ‘Be happy with the little you have. There are people with nothing that still manage to smile’.
