Bring Learning to Life

Throughout last term Penrith Anglican College students in Years 5 and 6 have been studiously studying the Australian Government and completing projects on Australian Prime Ministers. Year 6 student Mark Nielsen was so inspired by the projects he penned a letter to The Hon Tony Abbott advising him about their lessons. Mark’s letter was handed to Janelle Walker, the Prime Ministers Advancer who organised for Mark and Headmaster of the College, Mr Mark Lewis to meet with the Prime Minister after he had finished addressing a conference in Penrith last month. Mark Nielsen said he was feeling nervous and very excited to be meeting the Prime Minister and representing the College. On the completion of his conference Mr Abbott walked straight over to Mark and Mr Lewis, shook hands and invited them for photos. Mr Lewis stated that, “he was proud of Mark’s proactive nature and enthusiasm as well as the great confidence shown meeting and presenting a gift to the Prime Ministerâ€?. According to Mr Nielsen meeting the Prime Minister was a ď ˛ď€ Headmaster, Mark Lewis and Penrith Anglican College Student Mark Nielsen great day and one that he will never forget. meeting Prime Minister, Tony Abbott.

The 12th Mulgoa Idol at Twin Creeks Golf Course recently presented yet another spectacular array of talent. Ranging from the marvellous didgeridoo playing of Jeremy Donovan through to the budding magician Patrick Sliwa who amused and amazed. Unicyclist, Hugh Wilson demonstrated his talents with cycle and juggling - at the same time. The winner (picked by 3 self-confessed untalented judges) was the remarkable Elvis impersonator Steve Head. The Mulgoa Road Jazz Band played throughout the night a wide range of popular jazz numbers. The charity jazz night was in aid of Vatu Health (www. vatuhealth.com) a charity set up by Suzy and Adrian Sheen in aid of primary health care in Fiji. Much needed funds were raised thanks to the extreme generosity of those attending and local philanthropists. Each year, this evening has proved to be more and more popular. “Keeping music live, enjoying company of friends and supporting a charity has yet again proved to be a great formula for an enjoyable night said organiser Adrian Sheen

Jesus Defines Marriage There is an ongoing heated debate in Australia about what marriage is. 61% of Australians identify as Christians (2011 Census). So all Australians should be interested in Jesus’ definition of marriage. The Risen Christ told his followers to make disciples of all nations, ‘teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you’ (Matthew 28:19-20). That’s what I’m doing now. Jesus said this about marriage: ‘at the beginning the Creator “made them male and female” and said, “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh”[.] So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has jointed together, let man not separate’ (Matthew 19:4-6; Genesis 1:27; 2:24 NIV). Christ teaches us: (1) marriage is between a man and a woman (not persons of the same sex); (2) marriage is for life (‘let not man separate’); (3) marriage is exclusive (‘two become one’, not three or more). This accords with our current legal definition of marriage. The reasons for this definition are many: (1) Being alone is not good, and marriage is God’s good design to fix loneliness (Genesis 2:1825); (2) God invented sex for the man and his wife, and marriage is the proper place for it (Matthew 5:27-30; 19:9; 1 Corinthians 7); (3) sex produces children, and marriage offers the structure in which children can be raised by loving biological parents (Genesis 1:26-28; Malachi 2:15); (4) though men and women equally bear God’s image, men and woman have different strengths and weaknesses, and thus can complement one another, and contribute different important things, both to their marriages, and to their children’s upbringing (Genesis 1:26-27; Ephesians 5:21-6:4; Colossians 3:18-21; 1 Peter 3:1-7; 1 Timothy 5:8; 1 Thessalonians 2:7-11). ‘Marriage should be honoured by all’ (Hebrews 13:4). It will be a tragedy for Australian society to abandon Jesus’ definition of marriage and experiment with another. The worst impacts will be felt by the coming generations. So please support marriage with your prayers, words and actions.

FAITH – WARRAGAMBA BAPTIST CHURCH

Lyndon Rumsey P: 4774 1476 M: 0417174455 W: www.warragambabaptist.org.au Sunday Service: 9.30 am

Pastors Corner Increasingly through the media I see, hear and read about people, expressing extreme radical views. Views based on differences over culture, gender, age, religion and ethnicity. Some extremists then take this further and their views are supported by actions that lead to violence, death and destruction of property and innocent people’s lives being ruined. It does seem that some people expect everyone to comply with their view of life and its values. However, I do think it so easy to observe other people and to see how different they are, which in itself is Ok, but certainly it is not acceptable to impose your value system on others and demand compliance. In Bible times the Jewish people and the Samaritan people claimed to worship the same God, but they had some fundamental differences, differences that resulted in an immense hatred. Culturally too in those days except if they were related, men would not generally speak to women in a public place. All of which seem a bit strange in today’s world. In the Bible, we read that Jesus (Jewish) meets a woman (Samaritan), it is the middle of the day, at a well. The woman has come to draw water at the hottest time of the day, wanting to avoid others, as she has a bad public reputation, engaging in multiple relationships. Jesus in turn asks the woman to draw some water from the well, and provide him with a drink; A Jew speaking to a Samaritan; a man speaking to an unrelated woman. The woman reacts to this unusual request and says: “You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink? Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift

of God and who asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water. Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become a spring of water welling up to eternal life. Jesus’ simple request is very radical for those times it defies the appropriate culture of his times, a Samaritan, and a woman with a bad reputation. But surely it is a model for how we are meant to live; We are meant to bring to our world, peace, forgiveness, generosity and acceptance, irrespective of our differences. My prayer is that you will drink of the living water, that Jesus offers freely to everyone, It comes through faith in Jesus Christ, as Lord and personal Saviour. May God bless you in more ways than you could imagine. God bless, Lyndon Rumsey (Article submitted and written by)

Supper Cloths And Socials These days not many girls have ever come across the concept of the Glory Box. If inclined to Google ‘the Box’ she would find that in Australia and New Zealand: ‘Glory Box’ is a lady’s storage box containing items for her wedding or married life’ Back in the day, there was a general expectation that girls would sew fine seams and produce fine linens to furnish their marital home. Generally speaking, feminism in the ‘60s, expanding female workplace expectations, readily available and affordable household furnishings diminished the need for women to be providers of handmade household items. The ‘60s may have the reputation of swinging but in Australia elements of the older traditions held on. The Womens’ Weekly may have featured mini skirted fashion but the seasonal knitting supplements still sold out. A standard item in any well-filled glory box was the supper cloth. Hand embroidered linen was the order of the day and even into the ‘60s girls were still working on their cloths. Prior to the advent of TV, card or supper evenings were common domestic entertainments. In 1966 to commemorate the introduction of decimal currency and almost at the end of the ‘supper cloth’ tradition, the Women’s Weekly featured an embroidery kit featuring the new coinage. Like the supper cloth tradition, several of the coin denominations represented are a thing of the past. Nostalgic as thoughts of the decline of the crafts may be, the opposite is true. Craft workers do not need expensive infrastructure, no swimming pools, football fields or large arenas are required. Because craft groups meet in each other’s homes or small community halls the size of the ‘Craft Demographic’ can be hidden. One of the many established groups in the Penrith area is the Holy Family Knitters which meets at the Holy Family School in Luddenham each Monday morning. The members do a lot of fundraising craft including charity blankets. School Holiday craft days are conducted in the hall and it is inspiring to see the children learning old domestic crafts and skills from their ‘grandmothers’.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Do You Have a Child Who is Different? A Quirky Kid? He or She Does Things Differently to Other Children? When does ‘quirky’ stop being an expression of the individual and an indication that some intervention is required? I met a special needs teacher recently who has over thirty years experience teaching quirky kids. I put the above question to her. She said “those who could, would”. So if children in general are able to draw at the age of four then your four yearold child should be able to draw, even if she isn’t that keen on it. If your 6 year-old child isn’t making friends when other 6 year-olds have fit in nicely and found a group of children he can relate to, then your child is experiencing some limitations in his social and emotional development. The special needs teacher also said that the labels don’t help - lazy, stubborn, aggressive, naughty, bad, stupid, a typical boy/girl, etc, - they get in the way of finding out what is really happening for your child. Is it a medical problem? A physical problem? A neurodevelopmental problem? It’s very good advice. I’ve seen anxious children labelled as lazy. After I’ve had a chance to observe the child I have asked ‘lazy or terrified?’. The earlier that we seek help for our child, the better our child’s prospects will be. There is too much reliance these days on Dr Google. Too many parents are trying to diagnose their child’s difficulties and apply ill-fitting solutions. I can’t tell you the number of times a parent has spoken in a parenting group about his/her child’s difficulties and the other parents have jumped in with solutions based on what they think the diagnosis could be. Or a well-meaning relative or friend has told a parent that she thinks her child has autism because she knows someone who has autism and they have tantrums just like that. Chances are your mother-in-law, friend, neighbour, or local shopkeeper is not qualified to make that call. NOTHING beats an assessment by a qualified professional – community health, paediatrician, clinical psychologist, occupational therapist, speech pathologist. The first point of contact should be your General Practitioner (doctor) because you can get financial assistance from Medicare to help with the costs if you get a treatment plan from your GP. Quirky is absolutely fine, but if your child is limited in one or more areas of development (fine motor, gross motor, social, emotional, intellectual) it can lead to psychological or mental health problems later in childhood or during adolescence, and it’s often much easier to get help when a child is young rather than when the behaviours have become entrenched later. Of course, you are your child’s best advocate. So if you think that some pieces of information are missing or lacking, or you think you are not getting a quality service, it may be wise to seek another opinion. Keep pushing on because when you do find the right service for your child and he or she is happy and achieving (and possibly still ‘quirky’), it is worth all of the effort.

WHAT’S COOKING

Nepean Food Service

The Best Spaghetti Carbonara Easy • Time 24min • Serves 4

Ingredients • • • • • • • •

400g Spaghetti 1 Tbsp Olive Oil 200g Sliced Flat Pancetta, Cut Into 1cm-Wide Strips 2 Garlic Cloves, Finely Chopped 3 Eggs, Plus 1 Extra Yolk 100ml Thickened Cream 2/3 Cup (50g) Freshly Grated Parmesan, Plus Extra To Serve 2 Tbsp Chopped Flat-Leaf Parsley Leaves

Method 1.

Cook pasta in a large pan of boiling salted water according to the packet instructions. Meanwhile, heat oil in a frypan over medium heat. Cook pancetta, stirring, for 2-3 minutes until beginning to crisp. Add garlic for 30 seconds, then set pan aside.

2.

Place eggs, yolk, cream and parmesan in a bowl. Season, then mix gently with a fork. Drain pasta, then return to pan. Quickly add egg and pancetta mixtures and parsley. Toss to combine - the heat from the pasta will cook the egg slightly and form a creamy sauce. Serve immediately with extra parmesan.

Nepean Food Services recently held its Volunteer Recognition Day. The day was a huge success and our volunteers enjoyed themselves. We would like to thank Guardian Funerals for their generous donation of a TV and continued support throughout the year. We extend our thanks to Nepean Rowing Club for their donation of gift hampers. We appreciate the support as these generous donations enabled us to provide them with a good event. We thank Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler, Tanya Davies MP Member for Mulgoa and Stuart Ayres MP Member for Penrith for being on hand to thank our volunteers for all of their efforts. Nepean Food Services has over 80 volunteers who perform a range of services that enable clients to remain independent in their homes. These services include frozen meal deliveries, hot runs – a volunteer delivers and heats a meal for the client, social support, Luncheon clubs and special outings for our clients in the Penrith LGA and Warragamba/Silverdale. As volunteer Don has said: “Nepean Food Services is a good service and we as volunteers are happy to help. We gain satisfaction from building a good rapport with our clients and being entrusted with such an important responsibility.”

HEALTH MATTERS Article by: Andreas Klein Nutritionist & Remedial Therapist Beautiful Health & Wellness – 0418 166 269

Fixing Chronic Migraines 'Migraine is a common distressing headache that can start in childhood but most commonly starts at age 20 or 30 and infrequently after 40. Migraine is more common in women possibly due to hormonal factors, and chronic migraines can really destroy a person’s quality of life. Typically migraines are one-sided moderate-severe throbbing headaches, often presaged by auras (visual disturbances such as bright zigzag lines, flashing lights, difficulty in focusing or blind spots lasting 20-45 minutes). They can last from 4-72 hours, accompanied by nausea/vomiting; sensitivity to light, sound & smell along with a laundry list of other symptoms such as difficulty concentrating, speaking, poor coordination, stiff neck & shoulders, tingling pins & needles, numbness, limb weakness, loss of consciousness, even paralysis!! Migraine involves hypersensitivity of certain brain areas to environmentally triggered release of neurotransmitters such as serotonin and noradrenaline, resulting in altered cranialblood-vessel flow. Some people can manage migraines with pharmacy medications, for many these aren’t effective. So what a possible solution? In practice we find that carefully releasing and lengthening all neck & shoulder muscles using specifically targeted muscle elongation therapy techniques, reduces the inflammation in the muscles through which the blood supply to the brain has to flow. This (1). Removes one of the main triggers that alters cranial blood flow leading to migraines & (2). Reduces severity and frequency of migraines, so sufferers for whom medications have proved ineffective can now often live symptom & medication free.

So if you are looking for a bargain, this is the place to be, and we do have some very good ones! Each week we have different specials. Our members come from far afield and any man (over the age of 18) is most welcome to come along and join in the activities. COUNSELLING CORNER with Linda Cassell @ Psychology Works 4 All P: 4773 3057 or 0421 507 191 E: lindacassell@bigpond.com

Tools for a Healthy Relationship Sandy, a mother of three young sons, felt extremely bored in her marriage with Mike. They were both super busy with the rigors of work and parenthood. Mike also felt a lack of intimacy and warmth in the relationship. Even though he was always “busy”, he felt lonely. So the two sat down and created a list of ideas to rekindle their flame: A weekend trip? Planting a garden? A nightly walk? Sure, any one of these activities would likely provide a temporary benefit. But the deeply engrained problem of feeling disconnected wasn’t going to be magically solved by a weekend get-away. There are important three lessons (and today is lesson 1) which are help with connection and greater intimacy, and each lesson is psycho-spiritually linked to the most powerful source of energy in the universe – love. Lesson:1 Use Active Listening Believe it or not, one research study found that couples who were married for many years were less perceptive of their spouse’s feelings and thoughts than newly married couples. Let’s face it – the longer we are with someone, the less focused we are on what they say and how they feel. As time goes on, we begin to make assumptions about our mates to the point they can become caricatured, much like a cartoon. If left unchecked, the attributes we assign to them end up distorting their true essence, which acts as a major roadblock to intimacy. The way to erase the caricature is to engage in active listening. This means allowing them to freely share what is on their mind, asking follow up questions for clarification and paraphrasing back key points to demonstrate understanding. An important aspect of active listening requires that we not jump to conclusions. In long term marriages, this is easier said than done. I encourage you to approach discussions with your partner discussions with an open mind/heart and listen with all of your senses to what is being said. Stay tuned for lessons two and three in the next two editions of the Gazette.

The eligibility criteria for this program has been amended. You are now eligible if you are on an income under $35,000. The income level has been raised to allow more people access to the program, however you will still need a concession card and must reside in Wollondilly. Helping the Kids Buy a Home As the property market continues to boom, housing affordability slides closer and closer to record lows and parents worry about how their children will ever afford to buy a home of their own. What many may not realise is that a number of options are available to parents wanting to give their kids a leg up into the property market and not all of them require handing over large amounts of cash. In fact, if you have some equity in a property you can help your child buy a home without putting your hand in your pocket at all. A Family Pledge or Parental Guarantee loan allows you to use some of the equity in your home to provide a guarantee for your child which reduces or eliminates the need for a deposit and can help them avoid Lenders Mortgage Insurance. As a Guarantor you are not required to make any repayments however by providing a guarantee you are entering taking on a financial commit so it is important to understand what you are entering into. If you would like to help your kids purchase a property (and move out of home) give us a call on 1300 72 68 48 and we’ll show you all the options and give you all the info you need.
