Hopewood Health Retreat To Close

ď ˛ Image Source: www.hopewood.com.au

Hopewood Health Retreat has announced with great sadness that it will be closing its doors on 9 June 2015. Hopewood, one of Australia’s original retreats, has been an institution in the Wallacia region for almost 55 years and a leading voice in health, nutrition and natural living nationally. Throughout its history, the Australian Youth and Health Foundation has conducted Hopewood Health Retreat and the charity’s Board made the difficult decision to close the Retreat and Day Spa. Hopewood General Manager Sharon Beavon, who has worked at the Retreat for over a quarter of a century said today: “We are greatly saddened that this decision has had to be made, particularly for our incredibly dedicated, long serving and loyal staff. Our first priorities are to support our staff in their career progression, and to ensure Hopewood’s high standard of service continues for our guests, until closure. As the authentic voice of health and wellness, Hopewood will continue to share its philosophy at www.hopewood.com. au providing Australians with the information they need to live happier and healthier lives.

Every year on the second Sunday in May many families wake up early to surprise their mums and families with breakfast in bed for Mother’s Day. This year unfortunately the All Age Men’s team from Mulgoa Valley FC were up early for their 9am soccer match against Pitt Town SC at Gow Park. To commemorate this special day the team arranged to wear pink socks for the match to say thanks to all the women in their lives, putting up with early morning games on a Sunday and raise some money for charity. The match was won 5-3 by home team Mulgoa and $100 was raised and donated to the McGrath Foundation. The boys have more fundraising planned for next year and are hoping to make this an annual event for the club. The day would not have been possible without the support of Ed Crowther (Mulgoa Valley FC) and Linda Cerone (Nepean Football Association) and of course all of the Mulgoa Valley All Age Men’s team and their families.

FAITH – ANGLICAN PARISH of MULGOA Minister Matt Olliffe P: 4774 0422 M: 0401 958 161 Sunday Service times: 8:30am St Thomas’ Mulgoa. 10:30am St Paul’s Warragamba. 7pm Glenmore Park Anglican Church.

What Do You See When You Look At Your Children? Many of you who read this column have had children and raised them. Not everyone has, but many of you have. Many of you are grandparents or great grandparents. And even if you don’t have your own kids, and even if you don’t like kids, you cannot easily get away from them. There are hundreds of children in our local schools. They are obvious in our streets before and after school and on weekends. You have nephews and nieces, or the children of friends. It is part of being human to have the young around you. What do you see when you look at your own children? Of course, there is the relentless demand of looking after their needs. You never stop being a parent, even when they’ve grown up. Their infant cry, empty tummy and open mouth is soon replaced by their demand for space and freedom as they move into young adulthood. Their outstretched wings are also accompanied by an outstretched hand. The expenses don’t stop. And as their problems multiply with age and stage, so do yours, because they always remain your kids. Children are costly in terms of time and money, but so are all the precious and valuable things in our lives. As they change and grow and test our boundaries, we parents are stretched and challenged and have to say back to them, ‘You know, I’m new at this too. I’m learning as I go, and I am trying to do right by you. Please be patient with me, and I will try to be with you’. When our young are genetically our children, we see our own likenesses in them. I see a bit of me and a bit of my wife, all beautifully mixed together in a whole new human package. Each child is an individual embodiment of the love of his or her father and mother towards each other, captured in time and space in a whole new human being. Children are, or should be, love vivified and incarnated. They are, or should be, the overflow of human love in marriage. Children are, or should be, human love expressed and given a life and soul and will of its very own. They are a man and a woman’s mutual love, given a brain, a heart, two arms and two legs. Psalm 127 describes them as arrows in the hands of their parents, which we shoot off into God’s world, to work it and rule it. They are given the mandate to fill the earth and subdue it, and rule over God’s good creation in God’s image (Genesis 1:28-29). Our common wealth and prosperity shows that humans are actually pretty good at ruling this world, because we are made for it. Most of our common wealth we have received from our predecessors as an inheritance. We add a little bit to it, or waste it, during our short lives. We cannot take it with us when death comes. We pass on to our children our efforts to rule the world in our generation, for good or ill. This is our children’s inheritance. Our children, I hope, will have dams and houses and roads and schools and power stations that they did not build or pay for, just as we enjoy them now. Unfortunately, our failures, short-sightedness and sin, individually or as a community, are also part of that legacy we bequeath to them. They will have our asbestos and pollution and national debt to clean up and pay for. Nor do we know what else they will have to deal with once we’ve shuffled off this mortal coil. Children are not simply the outcome of a mutual agreement to reproduce. They do not complete us as parents or make us more human. They are not an accessory. They are not a way of getting social security payments or a means of social acceptance. They are not just units of production, cheap

labour or free baby sitters. They are not just ‘idle eaters’, nor future economic units, nor simply tomorrows taxpayers who will support our ageing population. They are not part of the overpopulation problem. They are not merely the ones who choose our nursing homes and will inherit our stuff. They are not our right, but they are a gift. They are not my property, but they are my true wealth. They are never an accident, certainly not from God’s point of view, but are welcome members and co-sharers with us of God’s world. To have a child is an act of hope. It is an act of defiance against the suffering and death experienced in our world. The birth of a child says that despite even the death that will come and take my child (unless Jesus comes back first), human life is right and good and matters. Jesus Christ’s resurrection gives us even more reason to act in defiance of suffering and death by having children. It says that death is not the end, but each of our children has an immortal soul. Each of our children will rise from the dead, even the ones who were miscarried or died in the womb or were stillborn or tragically aborted. These ones we leave in the hands of their maker who said ‘Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.’ But the ones God gives us for a short time, with them we seek to share with them the good things we have been given, including our knowledge of God. ‘One generation will declare Your works to the next and will proclaim Your mighty acts’ (Psalm 145:4). The Men’s Shed Update Whilst we celebrated the 100th Anniversary of Anzac Day over a month ago, the lads at the Shed would like to make mention of the hard-work done by four ladies of the area. They are Elaine Bonning, Pauline Coveny, Barbara Grills and Sharon Jancek. With their diligence, enthusiasm and dedication, over 300 poppies were knitted and sold to help make this year's Anzac Day an extra special one. Thank you ladies for your great work which was appreciated by everyone. Last month I made mention of the number of sheds in N.S.W. - This has jumped now to 306 - I didn't know that there were that many towns in the State!! So this should show all you fellows out there how much these Sheds are warranted and what a great work they do in bringing blokes of all ages together for several hours each week. And BREAKING NEWS - our Shed at Warragamba will now be open, for a trial run of a couple of months, on a Saturday - our usual hours of 9 am to 2 pm and will start on Saturday 6th of June. We have lots of equipment which could be used in your hobbies - maybe even a chance to learn a new one. SO CHAPS - IT IS UP TO YOU. We have had several requests about Mynah Bird Traps YES we do make them to order. We make two types - one at $25 and an extra special one at $50. HorsePLAY are you game? An exciting, new and revolutionary game has just been released in Australia, and it’s already got tails wagging. “Why Revolutionary” you say? Even before you strip off the packaging you’ll notice some of the Design and Quality reasons ‘why’. HorsePLAY has been created by some proud Aussies doing what Aussies do best – take on the stuffed shirts and seriously raising the bar on what we can expect from a ‘game’. Whether you love action, challenges, to answer trivia, mime, draw, sing badly or well, HorsePLAY has something for everyone! And if you’re not into games or don’t have anyone handy to play with, don’t worry. HorsePLAY is great value for money as it is TWO of our favourite products in one – exciting adventure game PLUS veritable coffee table book in a box. There’s loads of entertainment options packed into this sexy elegant plastic game box. Portable, playable and durable that honourable trait of yesteryear of being Built to Last – is back! No wonder HorsePLAY has just been awarded the Australian Top 100 Smart Products Award for 2015. What makes this game truly impressive is that it has only been released in the last few months and already it has won this prestigious award. What a great name. As it name suggests, the game is based on all things fun and entertaining. Horses are hard wired to have some horseplay every day – now so can we. A huge array of global talent, experts, artists and celebrities, has been harness together for our pleasure. And who’d have guessed featured in HorsePLAY is Mulgoa local Charlie Brister. Charlie is indeed a colourful character who chose to study a Bachelor of Political, Social and Economic Science at Sydney University primarily because it’s “Hogwarts” - the sandstone buildings!

This beautiful adventure game includes works by artists such as Tim Flach, Robert Vavra, Sir Alfred Munnings, Sidney Nolan and Pablo Picasso. It is the first time the Picasso estate has said yes to a Picasso image being included in a game before. A massive achievement in itself for this brilliant Aussie game. The objective of the game is simple. The winner is the one with the most points at the end of the game time. Game time can be 10 minutes, 10 hours or 10 days! Whatever time you want. There are 385 adventure cards with over 1,200 fun experiences. That’s hours of memory making fun to be had solo or with others. FAITH – WARRAGAMBA BAPTIST CHURCH

Lyndon Rumsey P: 4774 1476 M: 0417174455 W: www.warragambabaptist.org.au Sunday Service: 9.30 am

Pastors Corner As we move into June, half the year has almost gone. Do you wonder what you have accomplished in those six months? Take some time to stock take, to consider what you have done, where have you applied your energy and talents to? Have you been able to help others? Who have you selflessly loved? What difference in other people lives have you made? Sometimes we find ourselves just going through the motions of everyday life, work, studies, houses, family, friends, interest groups, all bring responsibilities, Is that what life is about? How do you focus on the needs of others, when you also have needs? Jesus speaks of this, He says “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me. (Matthew 25:35-36). For me, these words are challenging, how should I respond? Are there people in our community that are hungry or thirsty? Is it safe to engage with strangers? My wardrobe is full of clothes that perhaps I will grow (shrink) back into, would it be better to give them to people who need clothes? How can I help others who are sick, lonely or ageing? How could I visit those who are imprisoned? All of those needs exist in our communities, so how can we help? Each of must answer that question, but there is something special about giving to others, somehow you seem to receive more than you gave away. I don’t mean so much physically, it is more about how you feel about yourself.

In this area I pray that you too, may know the God that loves you, and through a personal faith in Jesus, learn to have His heart for people; and in doing so through practical ways contribute to the lives of others. God bless, Lyndon Rumsey (Article submitted and written by)

Police Appeal After Cyclist Assaulted Luddenham Police are appealing for information after a cyclist was assaulted at Luddenham last month. About 10am on Saturday 23 May 2015, a 59-year-old man was riding a bicycle north along the Northern Road with another male cyclist. About 500 metres from the intersection of Elizabeth Drive, a group of motorcyclists approached the cyclists, travelling in the same direction. At this time, police have been told one of the motorcyclists rode close to the 59-year-old and kicked him in the leg. The cyclist fell onto the road and was assisted by fellow cyclists. He was treated at the scene for cuts to this face and body. The motorcyclists failed to stop and continued in a northerly direction along the Northern Road. Officers attached to St Marys Local Area Command were called and are investigating the incident. As they continue their inquiries, police would like to speak to a number of motorcyclists who may be able to assist them, as well as any drivers who were in the area and witnessed the incident. The motorcyclists have been described as being dressed in black clothing and riding black Harley Davidson motorbikes with chromecoloured handlebars. Source: www.police.nsw.gov.au/news

In loving memory of

Iris Lavinia Anzac Podmore Born 25/04/1925

Deceased on the 2nd March 2015. After suffering ill health, passed away quietly at Forster NSW. Mum was a person who grew up on the land. She endured many hardships, her hardest was the tragic loss of Andrew her youngest son, and the loss of contact with his loved children. Mum taught us to be brave and stoic, to keep on keeping on no matter what. She is sadly missed and leaves us with a wonderful legacy of endurance, compassion and love.

Rest in Peace Dear Mum you are sorely missed by us all your loving family.

PARENTS CORNER

Article by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) Nepean Student – Wellbeing Worker – Mulgoa Public School, Nepean Community & Neighbourhood Services Ph: 0409 986 121 Centre: 4721 8520 Blog: http://handsheartsminds.wordpress.com

‘Resilience’ Is A Bit Of A Buzz Word These Days We all want our kids to do well and to be well. One of the things that determines social and emotional wellbeing is “resilience”. Resilience is defined as the ability of an individual to access resources to prevent, minimise, or overcome hardship. The problem, I think, we have when talking about resilience is that we treat it as something separate to our parenting and teaching. We treat it as something separate that our children must learn, like they learn maths, or the rules of whichever sport they choose to play. It is treated as something that we do to, or for, our children. But really, resilience is learnt within environments through children feeling heard and feeling that they belong. Children learn coping skills in relationship with parents and teachers. They learn about feelings and how to manage them, from birth, in relationship with us. The most optimal environment is a positive one, in which parents and teachers regard themselves as guides and educators. There is no point learning how to apply resilience in environments that are harsh, punitive, or unyielding, and having caregivers that shame children on a regular basis. It’s like applying a band aid to a gaping wound. For this reason, I think that parenting programmes like Circle of Security and Triple P are better programmes for promoting resilience in our children that any resilience programme available for children. There has been a steady decline of resilience and mental health in young people over the past 3 decades. What I am increasingly finding in my work with children, is that they feel they cannot bring their struggles and problems to their parents. The message from parents to their children resoundingly is “build a bridge and get over it”, “stop being a drama queen/wuss/sook”, “suck it up princess”, or “man up”. Up to 90% of the children I work with feel they cannot talk to their parents, or when they do they are dismissed, rescued, punished, or ignored. The majority of Year 6 children I speak with, young people heading into high school and adolescence, feel their parents don’t listen to them. No wonder 1 in 4 of our young people will go on to develop clinical depression. In this ‘lucky’ country. Too sad. As an Aboriginal woman said to me many years ago, “you can’t be a strong tree, if you don’t have strong roots”. So how do our children grow strong roots? Australian psychologist, Andrew Fuller, cites the research and advises that those children who are most resilient have been found to have three factors in their life (https://vimeo.com/43821184): 1. Feeling love, connection, and belonging within their family; 2. Having a few friendship groups, so that if they fall out with one group they can align themselves with another group; 3. Having an adult outside the family that likes them. Parenting is the most important factor in children’s resilience. Children grow up in the context of family. I would like to see the resilience debate going forward as placing an emphasis on parents to learn positive parenting skills and providing an environment in which our children grow their resilience skills, rather than placing the onus on children to bear the responsibility for learning resilience skills. How are you creating an environment in which your children can grow strong roots?

The Handcrafted Legacy Of Love

Police Appeal After Robbery At A Shop Luddenham Police are appealing for witnesses after a robbery at a shop in Luddenham last month. About 8.30am on Saturday 2 May 2015, a staff member was working at the counter of a newsagency on Northern Road when a man entered the shop. He approached the counter and demanded cash. The staff member complied handing over a small sum of money. The man left the shop and was last seen entering a silver car parked nearby and driving south on Northern Road. Police were contacted and Green Valley Local Area Command attended and commenced an investigation. A crime scene was established. No one was injured during the incident. The man was described as having a goatee beard. He was wearing a fluorescent orange jumper, dark pants and a blue baseball cap. Investigators are appealing for anyone that may have witnessed or has information about the incident to contact Crime Stoppers. Source - http://www.police.nsw.gov.au/news

Jessica Continues To Shine

For members of craft groups in the Mulgoa Valley there is the sad fact that on occasions, they lose one of our older craftswomen. When that happens it is not unusual for the family to donate all our late member’s unfinished/unused craftwork and materials to the Group. As a group of active craftspeople, a double sense of loss is felt, not only for a friend but also for the ongoing legacy of craft skills that have passed away with her. Embroidered and crocheted cloths and doilies, baby clothes as well as volumes of wools and cottons all may be in the donated boxes and bundles. Less obvious in the gifts is a rich source of Australian family social history. The knitting and paper patterns, the scrapbooked hints and craft ideas that are often included in the boxes give a fairly detailed map of the importance of handcrafted women’s work during one lifetime. Patterns trace the line from the Great Depression and WWII when it was necessary to have handmade socks and jumpers for both family and servicemen and women through to the present when so much can be bought cheaply on-line and craft lessons can be found on you-tube. Current members of local craft groups carry on the handcrafting heritage with their handcrafting skills. Each month this column will try to feature the work of a local group. One group where the handcrafting heritage continues meets in the Hobby Hut rooms in the old cottage behind the Catholic Church in Warragamba. Each Friday morning between 10am and noon, members host a crafting morning tea at the rooms. The atmosphere is friendly and all are welcome to join in…the area is also wellfenced, child and dog friendly.

Silverdale resident Jessica Turner recently returned from the United Kingdom with some exciting and inspiring news. Earlier this year, Jessica completed a research fellowship for communication research company PRIME Research in Oxford in the United Kingdom. Her brief research fellowship in the UK greatly impressed PRIME Research and they have offered Jessica a permanent position there as a Junior Project Manager in the Automotive team. “This is a fantastic achievement for her and an inspiring story for young residents of Western Sydney” said Luisa Turner, Jessica’s mother. Jessica’s journey this far has been the result of lots of hard work and dedication that is certainly starting to pay off. She attended Kingswood High School and then the University of Western Sydney, where she recently graduated with First Class Honours from her Bachelor of Communication (Public Relations) Honours degree. Whilst at University, her thesis entitled the ‘Self Management of Chronic Pain Using Social Media’, is due to be published in academic journals and the inspiration for her research topic has come from caring for her father, who has lived with Chronic Pain for over 13 years. Through her research, Jessica wants to try and eliminate the stigma and isolation that people living with Chronic Pain deal with every day. Jessica has also been a volunteer fire fighter in the Silverdale RFS brigade for over two years and served the homeless and disadvantaged people in Penrith for the Mama Lana’s Community Foundation. She has always worked very hard throughout her time at school and university despite many family illnesses and struggles and is an excellent role model for students alike. The District Gazette would like to wish Jessica all the very best of luck on her new life in the UK and hope she continues to achieve her goals.

2.

Place the flour, 1 teaspoon sea salt and some freshly cracked black pepper into a large bowl, and make a well in the centre. Slowly start pouring the beer into the well, whisking to combine, until all the beer is added and a smooth batter forms. Strain batter through a fine sieve to remove any small lumps of flour. Place in the fridge for 1 hour. Dry the potatoes with kitchen paper and cut lengthways into chips about 1cm-thick. Half fill a deep-fryer or large heavy-based saucepan with oil and heat to 160°C. (If you don't have a deep-fryer thermometer, test a cube of bread - it will turn golden in 30 seconds if the oil is hot enough.) Fry chips in batches for 5-7 minutes or until soft but still pale, then drain. The chips can be prepared to this stage ahead of time.

3.

Preheat oven to 170°C. When you are ready to cook the fish, increase the temperature of the oil to 190°C (a cube of bread will turn golden in 15 seconds). Fry chips again, in batches, for a further 2-3 minutes or until crisp and golden. Drain on kitchen paper. Keep warm in the oven.

4.

Maintain the oil temperature at 190°C. Dust the flathead fillets in the extra flour. Dip into batter, one at a time, allowing excess to drain off. Carefully place into the hot oil. Depending on the size of your fryer, cook fish in batches. Fry for 3-4 minutes or until golden brown and crisp, then drain on kitchen paper.

5.

Remove chips from oven. Sprinkle fish and chips with salt. Serve with wedges of lemon and tartare sauce.

with Linda Cassell @ Psychology Works 4 All P: 4773 3057 or 0421 507 191 E: lindacassell@bigpond.com

Four Important Psychological Discoveries Every day of every year, scientists toil away in their efforts to understand the workings of the human mind. What makes us happy? How do our emotions work? What should we be doing differently in our lives to make ourselves healthier, happier and stronger? Each year, a few studies stand out as particularly helpful by outlining a clear path to accomplish a better and healthier life. Here are 4 studies that everyone should know about; Study 1: We look for happiness in all the wrong places: We typically think of major life events, raises, large purchases, and success as the main sources of happiness in our lives. But a Harvard University study by Zhang, et al., 2014 shows that we are overlooking a powerful and readily available font of happiness: the small things that happen from day to day. The Implication: Pay more attention to the small things that happen in your daily life. Small sources of joy are powerful. Study 2: The mind/body connection: In 2014, study after study has shown that mindful people are better off in a variety of different ways. In fact, higher emotional self-awareness has been found to improve your overall health. A Brown University Study by Loucks, et al., 2014 showed that people who are more aware of what they are thinking and feeling in the moment have lower BMI (body mass index), lower fasting glucose, less smoking and higher levels of physical activity. The Implication: We should all work on being more aware of what we are thinking and feeling in the moment, and why. Study 3: There is a simple way to fight your own negativity and anxiety: Negative, obsessive thinking is a common part of many emotional and psychological problems. A new study by Nota & Coles, 2014 offers an option to try if you would like to reduce your own negative thinking patterns. These researchers found a clear connection between going to bed late at night, inadequate sleep, and excessive negative thinking/worrying. More studies are planned, but in the meantime, it makes sense to try this relatively easy fix. The Implication: Try going to bed earlier and work toward getting 8 hours of sleep per night, and see if it helps reduce your negative, anxiety-driven thinking patterns. Study 4: People who treat themselves with compassion feel better about themselves and their bodies: A 2014 study by Kelly et al., 2014 found that women who treat themselves with more kindness and compassion are better able to cope with disappointments and setbacks in life. They were also less reactive to other people’s judgments or criticisms of their body shape and size. The Implication: If you are kind to yourself in the face of your own mistakes and flaws, you will be a stronger and more resilient person overall. In Summary…. • That you will take joy from the small things in your daily life. • That you will be aware of what you are feeling in the moment. • That you will take care of yourself by getting enough sleep. • That you will treat yourself with the same kindness and compassion that you offer others.
