Deb Leads The Way

Sup emacy

The Mulgoa Rural Fire Brigade has a new Captain for 2016 – 2017, Captain Deb Smith. Deb has become the first female Captain at the Mulgoa Brigade as well as being the first female Captain in the Cumberland Zone which includes Penrith, Blacktown and Fairfield council areas. Deb was appointed Captain last month and has been a member of the Rural Fire Services for 13 years. She has taken over from Ian Walther who was the Mulgoa Captain for the past 11 years. Ian now fulfils the role of Senior Deputy Captain. Deb states that being the first female Captain is definitely “a weird feeling.” She said “It’s a little scary as I have such big shoes to fill. But I know I am in safe hands.” Deb and Ian are close personal friends so Deb feels like “this opportunity is definitely a mentorship. Ian is now only one step down, so he is always there.” Deb along with the rest of the Mulgoa Rural Fire Brigade look forward to an eventful and exciting year ahead where they hope to recruit more members. For updates and information please visit the Brigades Facebook page at: www.facebook.com/ mulgoaruralfirebrigade.

Brrrr, you can certainly feel the chill in the air as Winter slides around the corner. I must admit, Winter is my favourite season. I love the crisp morning air, and the wonderful array of soups and stews that grace my dinner table throughout the season. We have almost crept to the middle of the year! And... it’s TAX time! Coupled with this will be the end of Term 2 for those at school, and soon to be a New Financial Year for our friends in business. The tail end of June is certainly a busy one! As another month passes, I wish I could hit the ‘pause’ button for just a moment. Now’s the time to put your feet up, enjoy a warm cuppa and catch up on the latest happenings in your community. I know I have said it before, but it rings so very true! There are magical moments in every day, we just have to take the time to see them. Enjoy your Community News.

Update on Proposed Prison The Mayor of Wollondilly, Cr Simon Landow and General Manager, Luke Johnson met with The Hon. David Elliott MP, Minister for Corrections in Sydney last month regarding recent media reports of a proposed prison being built in Wollondilly. The Minister confirmed that no decision has been made in relation to the size and location of the proposed new prison, he also advised that details on the preliminary options being assessed are not yet available. However he confirmed that multiple sites are being considered in Sydney’s outer south west. He also noted the pressing need for a new prison to address capacity requirements and the compelling need for a more modern facility in NSW. Mayor Simon Landow stressed the importance of community engagement as part of the decision making process and sought an assurance that Council’s views would be taken into account. Mayor Simon Landow said: “It is important for our community to carefully consider the range of potential impacts a prison could have on Wollondilly. As soon as we have more detailed information we will be undertaking a process to establish a firm policy position on the proposal and we will be putting that to the Minister and State Government. However, at present we clearly need to await the outcomes of the current assessment of options being considered by the State Government General Manager, Luke Johnson said: “It’s important that any proposal for a prison in Wollondilly be considered in a thoughtful manner with careful assessment of social, economic and environmental considerations. Clearly there are presently a range of positive and negative views regarding this matter. Having detailed information will enable us to fully consider the proposal and establish a clear policy position. The Minister confirmed that he was very open to maintaining dialog with Council on the matter. The Mayor and General Manager thank the Minister and his advisors for meeting with them and will be meeting with the Minister again in July to obtain a further update.

FAITH – ANGLICAN PARISH OF MULGOA

Article Written + Submitted by: Parishioner Margaret

Exciting New Direction for St Thomas Mulgoa Anglican Parish The future plans that were outlined in last months edition have now been approved by the Parish Council and St Thomas is entering into a Gospel Partnership with Glenmore Park Anglican Church with Rev John Lavender as the Senior Minister. An Assistant Minister will be appointed to look after St Thomas Parish but will be part of the Glenmore Park team. The partnership will have a Memorandum of Understanding which will be drafted by a committee from both Churches including Rev Neil Atwood or Bishop Ivan Lee. The situation will evolve in the future as St Thomas Parish starts to grow again and St Thomas will retain its status as a full Parish with its own finances. With much development starting to take place in Warragamba, Silverdale, and in the near future around Luddenham, the Parish has the exciting opportunity to reach out to the many new people moving into the area in the future. The new Anglican Church on Silverdale Road is ready to start building and will be a wonderful asset to the area. The present Church buildings are all inadequate for family ministry and the new Church has been well designed to encourage families with children of all ages to attend. The Key Advantages Glenmore Park Anglican Church has very well established and extremely popular groups and will be able to share planning and resources as well as special events and outreach activities. This will become very important with the new Church in Silverdale and the growing population in the area. We will be able to share combined activities where appropriate. GPAC will also be able to help out with administration and Diocese affairs. Mulgoa Parish staff and Parishioners will be able to depend on the support and strategic abilities of John Lavender and the GPAC staff team. The present Church services are still combined with a joint service at either St Thomas Mulgoa or St Pauls Warragamba, both at 9.30am on a Sunday. The sermons are being given by the GPAC team and we are enjoying their wonderful ministry talking through the Bible passages with such committed worshipful and often humorous styles. We have noticed that most of the young men seem to have a small beard but that is not a prerequisite much to the relief of Barry Roots who will be preaching on the 12th June! The 13th Annual Charity Jazz Night a Huge Success

13th Annual Charity Jazz Night. Photo | Dr Adrian Sheen

The 13th Annual Charity Jazz Night and Mulgoa Idol was once again a great success with a magical night being held at Twin Creeks Golf & Country Club last month. Dr Adrian Sheen and the Mulgoa Road Jazz Band hosted 130 people and raised over $4000 for Vatu Health. Vatu Health was set up in 2015 and is supporting primary health care on the Coral Coast in Fiji. Following Cyclone Winston, there are unfortunately several long term effects to the health and health system of the region. The night kicked off with some amazing music by the Mulgoa Road Jazz Band. The night continued with incredible music, extraordinary food and then on to one of the highlights of the night......The Mulgoa Idol.

A total of six contestants took part in this part of the event which included a range of performances from contemporary dance to classical cello and even a bag pipe solo. The winner of the competition was Year 12 Student Leah Park. Leah attends Tara Anglican School for Girls and has been playing the clarinet for eight years. On the night she performed alongside her mother Carin who supported her performance on the piano. Leah has won many other musical competitions for her clarinet playing and is also the Music Captain at Tara. Leah hopes to study a double degree in Medicine and Music next year at the University of Sydney. Leah says that she “was invited by Dr Sheen to perform on the night” and “the fact that Dr Sheen’s vision to improve health care could be realized through music as a fundraiser has encouraged and confirmed [her] aspiration to study Music and Medicine.” There were many highlights throughout the night including a traditional Fijian performance by local Fijian band who call themselves the ‘Meli, David, Kol and Jack Quartet’. Some even travelled long distances to attend the evening such as Gary Boland from Margaret River in Western Australia. One of Gary’s bucket list items was also achieved on the night when he got the opportunity to play the trumpet alongside the Mulgoa Road Jazz Band. Many local Mulgoa residents were also in attendance, a number of whom have attended every Charity Jazz Night event over the past 13 years. Vatu Health hopes to do all they can to help those in need on the Coral Coast and any support possible would be greatly appreciated. For those who would like to find out more can contact Dr Sheen by email on: dracsheen@gmail.com

Pastor’s Corner

The Number 1 Relationship Killer

The society we live in often tends to be very quick to criticise and point out what is wrong, rather than encourage what is good about a person or a situation. Are you a person who encourages others? Recently I read this true story, Mary Ann Bird was born with multiple birth defects; she was born with a cleft palate; and other students would ask her about her misshapen lip, crooked nose, lopsided teeth, and garbled speech. Mary Ann would reply that she had fallen and cut it on a piece of glass; it seemed to be a more acceptable than saying she had born that way. Mary Ann suffered from both the physical and emotional trauma of her condition; she was convinced that no one outside of her family could love her. Mary Ann’s favourite teacher was in second grade, Mrs. Leonard. As part of student health and development each student was required to pass a hearing test. Each student would stand near the door of the classroom, the teacher would sit at her desk, which was a few metres away and whisper a few words, things like “The sky is blue” or “Do you have new shoes?” Finally it was Mary Ann’s turn, Mrs. Leonard said, in her whisper, “I wish you were my little girl.” Mary Ann said those seven words, changed her life. How do we encourage another person? There are lots of different ways to encourage someone, including: taking the time to get to know a person; by the encouraging words we use; by being non-judgmental; by maintaining confidentiality; by acts of services; by being generous and sharing what we have. The Bible in Hebrews 3:13 “But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called Today, so that none of you may be hardened by sins deceitfulness.” How much better would our society be, if each day, we made time to encourage another person? God Bless, Lyndon

When there’s a problem in a relationship, couples try to talk about it. If they can talk about in a way that resolves the problem, all is well. If they can’t talk about it in a way that resolves the problem, all is not well. When they can’t talk about the problem successfully, it is usually because of one thing. They are trying to win. Wanting to win causes them to argue about the problem rather than discussing it in a calm and objective manner. They have a need to be right. The need to win is the one thing that is most likely to destroy a relationship. “It’s you,” one partner will say to the other. “You are the cause of the problem. You just can’t see it.” “No, it’s you,” the other partner will respond. “You’re wrong and you don’t want to admit it. All my friends agree with me.” In order to reach a resolution of any problem, couples have to give up the need to be right. In order to give up that need, they must understand the psychological underpinnings of that need. They must understand that the need to be right comes from an unhealthy place that causes them to be rigid in their thinking and blocked in their emotions. To one degree or another, they hold on to this need as if their very lives depended on it. If you can overcome the need to win, you will get to a completely different place than you have ever been. You’ll know when you get there, because you’ll have a completely different attitude about your relationship and a completely different goal. Your goal now is not to win. Your goal is to find the solution, no matter what it is. You are like a scientist whose only concern is to find the right answer, no matter what it is and no matter who is right and who is wrong. Even if your original theory proves to be wrong, you are ready to accept the solution, because the solution will resolve the conflict and bring closeness. That is your ultimate aim now, to build closeness, trust, love and mutual respect.

Latest @ Luddenham by Wayne Willmington

ď ˛ The Northern Road. Photo 1 Pre 1920. Photo 2 taken a few years ago. | Photos supplied.

Luddenham’s biggest concern is still the road situation with the Northern Road and the M12, the RMS have issued a summary of the recent consultation that had 143 individual submissions received. There were 122 regarding the M12 Motorway and 36 regarding the Northern Road. A copy of the full report is available at www.rms.nsw.gov.au/wsip. More information regarding the northern part of Northern Road Stage 4 alignment (north of Adams Road) as well as the preferred route of the M12 will be announced mid 2016 according to the latest from the RMS. During May the Luddenham Progress Association delivered petitions to the Luddenham houses in Liverpool Council, asking the residents to sign the petition if they are interested in moving

into Penrith Council. If you haven’t returned it yet you can still mail it to Luddenham Progress, PO Box 58 Luddenham 2745 or scan and email to luddenhampa@gmail.com. If you have not received a petition and you live in Luddenham and in Liverpool Council, they can be downloaded from the Luddenham Progress Association Facebook page. The residents in Campbell St are happy with Penrith Council for the resurfacing and all the work on the shoulders, but be warned that the Police are now catching a few motorist that like to speed, so be careful. With all the changes going to occur around Luddenham, a few of the locals are keen to set up a museum containing items of interest from the local area over the past years. Based on the idea that the items need to be collected before they are all lost, with discussions occurring to try and have it built on the Luddenham Showground. If you would like some further information please contact me on the email below. Another successful Cuppa for Cancer (Biggest Morning Tea) was held last month, for the last two years Luddenham has raised the most amount of money, I will let you know next month how much was raised this year, thanks to all concerned especially Jean & Artie Willmington. The Penrith Ornamental Wood Turners Association are moving to a new home at the Luddenham Showground, more details to follow next month. The photos this month show Northern Road, [Photo 1] was taken pre 1920 and [Photo 2] was taken a few years ago. (The old House next to the Butchers shop). If you have an opinion on what Luddenham of the future should be like please email your thoughts or views to willmingtons@ bigpond.com.

Warragamba Preschool Inc.

This month we continue the series on Parent Traps that we started in April. Do you give your child ‘accidental rewards’ for his/her undesirable behaviour? Accidental rewards include: • Social attention • Material rewards • Activity rewards Social Attention Smiling or laughing at your child’s undesirable behaviour will ensure that she will do the behaviour again. Spending a lot of time trying to reason with, or arguing with your child over his behaviour may also guarantee that you will see it again. Material Reward This is the reward that children get when they whinge and cry at the supermarket for a toy or chocolate, and they get it to keep them quiet. Activity Rewards An activity reward is where the parent redirects or distracts a child from her undesirable behaviour with an activity or a food treat, of directly addressing the behaviour. Do you use a lot of redirection or distraction to address your child’s behaviour? They are OK sometimes, but I worry when I see parents using redirection or distraction a lot because it indicates that the parent feels uncomfortable about setting boundaries and limits. Children need boundaries and limits to stay physically and emotionally safe, and when the parent has difficulties in this regard it can elicit extreme behaviour from the child. Remedy? Ignore minor mistaken behaviour. Stay calm, and give your child clear, calm instructions. It’s OK to set a boundary or limit for your child. It’s OK to say ‘no’. If you are in public, disregard comments and looks from other people – chances are they don’t have a degree in child psychology. Struggling? The Triple P (Positive Parenting Program) parenting course is available free in the community (www.resourcingparents.nsw. gov.au/). Triple P Online is available for the cost of $80. Photo source | Chance Agrella freerangestock.com

Mulgoa Senior School Leadership Students Visit NSW Parliament House

Tanya Davies MP, State Member for Mulgoa, was thrilled by the success of the 2016 Mulgoa Senior School Leadership Forum last month. Twenty-two students from local high schools attended the Mulgoa Leadership Forum at NSW Parliament House last month and had the opportunity to hear from and discuss leadership with The Hon John Ajaka MLC, Minister for Ageing, Disability and Multiculturalism as well as Mr Daryl Maguire MP, Member for Wagga Wagga, Parliamentary Secretary for Veterans and the Centenary of ANZAC. The forum is an annual event initiated and hosted by Tanya Davies to inspire senior school students to think more broadly about leadership in our community. “I am delighted to have the opportunity to meet and mentor student leaders from across Mulgoa, as well as to recognise their hard work and involvement in their respective school communities,” Tanya Davies said. The student leaders, from Caroline Chisholm College, Penrith Anglican College, Emmaus Catholic College, Nepean Christian School, Glenmore Park High School, Erskine Park High School and Thomas Hassall Anglican College, were acknowledged directly by the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. Students watched Tanya Davies deliver a Private Members Statement to the Parliament on Education Scholarships, followed by a personal tour of Parliament House. The students then watched question time in the Legislative Assembly Chamber and got to see the Premier and Ministers in action. Marguerite Mahr of the Leaders Elect of Nepean Christian School said “It is refreshing to hear the personal side of politics; you don’t get to see that from the media. It is also great to see how seriously politicians take the concerns of their communities, as well as the effort taken to address those issues and serve in their role.” Glenmore Park High School’s Senior Leadership Representatives Natasha Zahra and Emilia Rance also weighed in on their experience of the Leadership Forum. “It was a very interesting and enjoyable day. I feel like I have a wider knowledge of Parliament,” said Miss Zahra. “I found it insightful into the roles of politicians, it was good to learn what they actually do and watch them debate,” said Miss Rance.  Tanya Davies MP with Mulgoa Senior High School students on the steps of NSW Parliment House. | Photo supplied.

1/2 Lemon, Grated Zest 250g Ricotta 1 Free-Range Egg, Beaten 2 Tsp Grated Parmesan 150g Cannelloni, About 14 Tubes 2 x 125g Mozzarella Balls, Sliced

Preheat the oven to 180C/gas 4. Put the spinach and a drizzle of olive oil in a large pan over a low heat. Add the nutmeg, season with salt and pepper, cover and leave to sweat. Help the kids to stir it occasionally until the spinach has cooked down. Place in a bowl and set to one side to cool a little. In the same pan, heat a drizzle of olive oil and gently sweat the onion until soft. Add the garlic, tomatoes, bay leaf, a few basil leaves and lemon zest and let it gently simmer for 20 minutes until the sauce has thickened. Season with salt and pepper. Have the kids squeeze the moisture out of the spinach into the bowl. Place the spinach on a board so you can chop it up. Return the spinach to the liquid in the bowl and get the kids to stir in the ricotta, beaten egg and parmesan. Season to taste. Sit the piping bag in a jug, fold its edges over the rim, then spoon in the spinach mixture. Have the kids help pipe the mixture into the cannelloni tubes and lay them in a 20cm x 25cm oven dish. Spread the tomato sauce over the cannelloni. Scatter over most of the basil, lay the mozzarella slices on top, drizzle with extra-virgin olive oil and season. Place in the oven and cook for 35–40 minutes or till the top is golden and the pasta tender (if the top browns too fast, cover the dish with foil). Remove from the oven and let stand for a few minutes before serving with the remaining basil.

HEALTH MATTERS

Article Written + Submitted by: Andreas Klein Nutritionist + Remedial Therapist from Beautiful Health + Wellness P: 0418 166 269

Shoulder Pain – Could it be Arthritis? Many people visit the clinic with shoulder issues. Shoulder injuries and pain commonly result from many types of acute & chronic trauma, as well as many other medical conditions. Acute muscles & tendons injuries, slap tears, dislocations, as well as chronic injuries from repetitive strain & bursitis, are all common. It is important that the reason for shoulder pain is appropriately diagnosed. Then physical therapies can often help. Sometimes an operation may be required to re-attach tendons correct joint & capsule issues etc. On occasions what seems like a simple shoulder problem that should respond well to physical therapy does not. In these instances ongoing shoulder pain may not be driven only by the original injury. Here autoimmune processes should be considered as a possible cause. A real life example often best helps to illustrate this. Recently a client presented with two sore shoulders. There is ultrasound evidence of slight ‘wear & tear’ in the swollen tendons of her shoulder muscles, plus extensive bursitis. Pain is mainly in the front of both shoulders, the left is worse. She has very limited range of motion especially of the left arm due to the pain. The pain came on after a workers-comp return-to-work test for shoulder strength. The client is treated with muscle elongation therapy,

techniques for several weeks. She has some improvement in pain & range of motion, but this is limited and does not improve further. She is advised that an autoimmune disorder may be at play here, and that diet may be important to her recovery. She initially does not want to make any changes and several weeks of extra therapy sees no further improvement. Eventually the client agrees to make the advised key dietary changes. Within one week of implementing dietary changes she has close to full range of motion and is very relieved. So how does this work? Simply put‌ making key dietary changes helped to calm immune activation in the gut and produced almost immediate results in her shoulders. If you have unresolved shoulder (or neck) pain, why not come talk to us at BHW - see our ad for contact details. Possible Causes Of Pain In The Shoulder: Rotator Cuff Injuries, Rotator Cuff Tendonitis, Frozen Shoulder, Thoracic Outlet Syndrome, Osteoarthritis, Bursitis, Tendon Sheath Inflammation, Tendonitis, Fibromyalgia, Subarachnoid Haemorrhage, Ankylosing Spondylitis, Heart Attack, Slipped Disk, Dislocations, Ectopic Pregnancy, Rheumatoid & Juvenile Arthritis, Gout, SLE Krucik G nd, ‘What Causes Shoulder pain 32 Possible conditions’, Healthline.com

The Dog Lovers Show is set to again transform the Hordern Pavilion and Royal Hall of Industries into a haven for dog lovers as it bounds back into Sydney town on Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th August 2016. The show will play host to over 30 DOGS NSW Breed Clubs, hundreds of stalls offering all the latest and greatest gear for your pooch, free presentations from celebrity dog experts, free vet, grooming and training demonstrations and most importantly the opportunity to get up-closeand-personal with literally hundreds of beautiful dogs of all shapes, sizes and breeds! Founder and CEO Jason Humphris remains committed to ensuring that the event continues to help educate visitors on dog adoption and is proud of the fact the show has helped to find loving homes for hundreds of dogs in need: “The Canidae Rescue Dog Zone is a unique opportunity for visitors to speak with representatives from shelters across NSW on what’s really involved with rescuing a dog, and whether it is a suitable option for them.

Show goers will also be able to witness some of Australia’s most talented canines in the Royal Canin Arena, featuring impressive demonstrations of speed, agility, flyball, flygility and K9 disc. The popular Military Working Dog Tribute returns with more historical information and talks from war veterans retelling their own personal stories of working with war dogs in the battlefield including the training process involved for dogs to become active service canines. The Breed Showcase offers visitors a rare opportunity to meet and compare canines from over 35 Breed Clubs, with experts on hand to provide detailed information on each dog including their unique characteristics. The biggest names in vet and pet care will present free presentations on the Kong Celebrity Stage with expert tips for a healthy, happy dog covering training, behaviour, diet, first aid and how to survive a new puppy. Dr James and Dr Anthony from Village Vets Australia have confirmed their appearance, with more big names to be announced. The Perfect Match zone will provide prospective owners with invaluable insights to help them find the right dog for their lifestyle, family and home with a clever and comprehensive questionnaire that can be completed in a matter of minutes and dozens of large information posters. The Pat-A-Pooch nursery will again be full of smiles and wagging tails, as attendees get the chance to meet and connect with a plethora of pooches and puppies including guide, assistance, working, police and rescue dogs.
