More Funding On The Way To Improve Silverdale Road

Federal Member for Hume Angus Taylor has welcomed further funding for upgrades and safety improvements to Silverdale Road. Over $6 million ($6,016,840) has been allocated to Silverdale Road under Round 4 of the Federal Government’s $200 million Local Roads Package (LRP). The project will undertake further improvements on a 6.7 km section of Silverdale Road between Taylors Road and the Nepean River Bridge. “This additional funding is on top of the $8 million previously provided by the Federal Government under Round 3 of the LRP for scoping and initial improvements undertaken by Wollondilly Shire Council on this stretch of Silverdale Road,” Mr Taylor said. “Works to be carried out with the additional $6 million will include road widening from Marsh Road to Warradale Road, safety improvements at Ridgehaven Road intersection and road re-surfacing north of Farnsworth Avenue intersection. “I have heard loud and clear community concern about Silverdale Road keeping up with demand as the area grows, and I will continue to deliver investment in this road and other local roads around Wollondilly.” This phase of the project is currently in planning stages and completion is expected by January 2024.

wonderful community space and should remain so.” Due to the fact the lease with the current operators is due to end in early 2023, Council is required by law to openly tender for the operation of the golf course as the current lease has no option for renewal. CEO Ben Taylor advised, “Council is bound by the Local Government Act and has no choice but to publicly seek Expressions of Interest for the operation of the golf course to ensure an open and transparent process, and the best possible outcome for the Wollondilly community.” As the lease with the current tenants comes to an end, Council will start the process to re-establish a new lease later this year so it is in place by July 2023. “Our staff are working closely with the current tenant and have agreed to extend their lease through to the end of June 2023 to allow for a full year of membership while the EOI process proceeds,” said Mr Taylor. It is open to the current tenants to submit an EOI through the formal process once it commences later in 2022. There are no plans to sell the land to developers for high density housing or other purposes. The final decision on the lease, its tenants and the terms and conditions will be reported to and resolved by the elected Council. Council is required to manage all its land according to the Local Government Act 1993 and has adopted a Policy for managing its public assets, including land, in order to comply with NSW Government requirements. Council will consider the future of the site in line with the Policy and its obligations to the broader community, going through the public Expression of Interest process for the future operation of the site to ensure the best outcome for the community.

Antill Golf Course Wollondilly Shire Council has reaffirmed its commitment to Antill Golf Course remaining a golf course, confirming that it has no plans to sell off the land at the site and no intent to change its operating model. “I can categorically confirm our vision is for Antill to remain a golf course and that Council has not even contemplated the potential for it be used for anything other than a golf course,” said Mayor Matt Gould. “I understand there are community concerns, and want to put these to bed once and for all. Lightweight Plastic Bags Banned From 1 June The ban on lightweight plastic bags will officially come into force in Wollondilly from 1 June, in line with the first stage of the NSW Government’s single-use plastics ban.

2 June 2022 www.mulgoagazette.com.au

Member for Wollondilly, Nathaniel Smith, said the ban will help to prevent almost 2.7 billion items of plastic litter from entering the environment in NSW over the next 20 years. “Banning lightweight plastic bags on 1 June is a key part of changing how we use, reuse and dispose of plastic,” Mr Smith said. “This plastic bag ban, and the further single-use plastic bans later in the year will significantly improve the state of our environment in the Wollondilly region. “As we all know, it’s the little changes that matter and make a difference.” Minister for Environment James Griffin all of us can see the impact plastic pollution is having on our environment, which is why these major changes to plastic use are needed. “Single-use plastic is used by many of us for just a few convenient minutes, but it remains in our environment for many years, eventually breaking into microplastics,” Mr Griffin said. “We know that single-use plastic items and packaging make up 60 per cent of all litter in NSW. By stopping the supply of problematic plastic in the first place, we’re helping prevent it from entering our environment as litter, or going into landfill.” In addition to the lightweight plastic bag ban from 1 June, from November the NSW Government is banning: • single-use plastic straws, stirrers, cutlery, plates, bowls, and cotton buds • expanded polystyrene food ware and cups • rinse-off personal care products containing plastic microbeads. The NSW Government passed the Plastic Reduction and Circular Economy Act 2021 in November, and introduced the Plastics Action Plan last year. To ensure small businesses are ready for the changes this year, the NSW Government engaged the National Retail Association (NRA) to deliver a comprehensive education campaign to more than 40,000 businesses across NSW. The NRA is running a retailer education campaign, conducting store visits, and providing online webinars and resources to help businesses make the transition away from problematic single-use plastics. The NRA has launched a free hotline (1800 844 946) to offer businesses, community organisations and consumers advice on the single-use plastic bans. A big milestone took place on Friday 13th May, with the official sod turning of the new multi-million-dollar shopping centre at Silverdale. In attendance at the event was Angus Taylor MP (Federal Member for Hume), Wollondilly Shire Mayor Matt Gould, and Bruno and Maria Lopreiato, owners of Silverdale Shopping Centre. The project is anticipated to be completed in September 2023, weather permitting. 300-350 local people will be employed during the construction of the shopping centre, with local businesses also involved. It is one of the largest projects in Silverdale since the Warragamba Dam construction. The new shopping centre will include Woolworths and 27 speciality shops. Undercover car parking will be available and space for 460 cars. An electric travelator and lift will assist shoppers. The second stage is planned within 4 years of the first stage. It is a significant development for the local area, which first began back in 1996 with 4 shops at Silverdale forming the start of the shopping centre and consisting of a chemist, post office, supermarket, and liquor shop. “Maria and I are happy and excited with what has been and what will be achieved. We moved to the local area in 1986. Over the years, there has been lots of hard work leading up to this day. It will be a huge service that will cover just about everything for the community. There won’t be a need for many to travel to shop” explained Bruno Lopreiato, owner of Silverdale Shopping Centre to the Mulgoa Valley Gazette. “We appreciate Angus Taylor MP and Mayor Matt Gould for attending the sod turning. We would also like to thank Judy Hannan, Wollondilly Shire Council and everyone involved. We look forward to working together with the project” he stated.

Local Small Business Wins Big Plug After a tough couple of years for Australia’s small businesses, Telstra recently gave a few of them a well-deserved plug. Earlier in March, Telstra kicked off their Telstra Big Plugs for Small Business competition, giving away their ad space during Round 8 of the 2022 Toyota AFL Premiership and Round 9 of the 2022 NRL Telstra Premiership. After entering into the competition, 17 small businesses from across Australia received a big plug at the nation’s biggest football stadiums in a takeover of Telstra’s advertising space. The winning small businesses had their business showcased on the big screen, the signage, and even on the broadcast, helping them to reach millions of fans and living rooms. It was unrivalled exposure. One of those small businesses that won the competition, was Mulgoa’s Black Lily Images, owned by Kylie Miles. The local business’ advertisement was broadcast during Round 9 of the 2022 NRL Telstra Premiership between the Penrith Panthers and Parramatta Eels at Panthers Stadium in Penrith. “I am so thankful to Telstra for the small business promotion. It has given my business exposure that I could never achieve on my own” said Kylie Miles of Black Lily Images. “It will help me take my business to another level and I will be forever grateful to Telstra” she ended. FAITH – GRACE WEST ANGLICAN

Article Submitted by: Senior Minister Christopher Braga Grace West Silverdale | P: 47331635 W: www.gracewest.church | A: 2265 Silverdale Rd, Silverdale NSW 2752 Service Times: Sundays @ 9.30am Do you ever feel that you don’t belong? A sense of belonging is something that we all need as human beings. When you don’t feel you belong, it can be discouraging and depressing. I have felt that way plenty of times! When we come into a relationship with others, we foster that sense of belonging. That feeling might come from family, church or being part of a sports team or 4WD club. However, the word ‘belong’ also has a sense of being owned by another, of having obligations to others. It is the idea of not seeing ourselves as independent beings, but of seeing that we depend on each other. A group of people build a sense of belonging by depending on each other. The Bible also teaches that we can belong to God. Through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, he has ‘bought’ those that trust him. They now belong to Jesus. It is out of this belonging to Jesus that he creates a community, the church, where people belong to each other (Romans 12:5). So often we live for ourselves and wonder why we don’t have a sense of belonging. It is only when we live for others that we will feel that we belong and, ultimately, the most important person to belong to is God. If you want to know more about what it means to belong to God and his people, then come and visit Grace West any Sunday. WARRAGAMBA BAPTIST CHURCH

Pastor’s Corner

Both my wife and I recently experienced COVID and therefore, we needed to isolate. Thankfully the symptoms were not too demanding. During that period of lockdown, what I found most difficult was the absence of “face to face” interaction with other people, which is so different to my normal weeks’ activities. During this time, I read an article that posed a question, which disturbed me, in a good way. The question was “Is my love for people greater than my desire for intimacy with God?” For many of us, we spend a considerable amount of time trying to live up to the expectations of others. People like our parents, our husband or wife, our children, our grand- children, our brothers, our sisters, our friends, our bosses, our work colleagues, our neighbours, and even our church family. Yet, how much time do you spend in getting to know your God, in a deep and intimate way? Psalm 23 expresses the degree of intimacy that David had with God; “The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not be in want. He makes me lie down in green pastures; he leads beside quiet waters he restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness, for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows”. David knew God intimately and was open to God’s direction; learning to trust and allow God to guide him, to find rest for his soul beside the quiet waters. It is through intimacy with God that we learn to trust Him, as we face our doubts and fears and even death. My prayer is that each of us will claim the promise of verse 6, “Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever”.

After a two-year forced hiatus due to COVID, Warragamba’s Bold Jack Country Music Festival returned on Saturday 30th April. The popular local event had been on hold since 2020 and was welcomed back by the community. Performers were hanging out to get back on the stage at Warragamba Town Hall and the audience was excited to see their favourite country music artists once again. The headline act for the 2022 Bold Jack Country Music Festival was Amber Lawrence and was preceded by some amazing local talent including Marko Bogic and Sarah McAdams. Veteran performer Mark Shay emceed the event and showed his talents with a fantastic set of his own. The Bold Jack Country Music Festival Organising Committee is a Sub-Committee of Warragamba Silverdale Neighbourhood Centre (WSNC). Funds that were raised on the night will go to the inspiring organisation Wings4kidz, which provides free regional air and ground transport for seriously ill children and their families. “It was a great night and a big success. The event would not have been made possible without the support of our amazing sponsors and Warragamba/Silverdale local business” explained Kate Stinson of the Bold Jack Country Music Festival Organising Committee. “I would also like to thank the Bold Jack Country Music Festival Organising Committee for their hard work in creating such a fun event and, of course, the local community for coming out and joining us” she continued. Latest @ Luddenham by Wayne Willmington We would like to welcome Yogi and Nayana as the new owners of the Luddenham Post Office. The Luddenham Post Office opened in 1872 by Mr Beardow. In 1875, Miss Caroline Wallace became Postmistress. Then in 1895, the Willmington Family took over the Post Office and ran it till 1993, when the Cambareri Family Business also became the Post Office. I would like to thank the Cambareri Family for doing an amazing job over the years, now it’s up to you Yogi and Nayana. Now that we have a new Federal Government, the Luddenham Progress Association will hopefully be able to work with the new Minister for Infrastructure to have Western Sydney Airport Co withdraw unfair objection to new housing to the north of Luddenham. The Progress Association will also be bringing pressure to have the flightpaths announced and the airport noise contours updated to reflect new information. On Tuesday the 17th of May, Luddenham saw one of its biggest funerals at Holy Family. Glenn (Red) Stokes passed away last month. Red, who spent most of his life here, attended Luddenham Public School and passed too young at 58 years old. RIP Red. What a wonderful job the staff and students of Luddenham Public School did when the Today Show presented the morning weather crosses from the school. Was a pleasure to watch all the crosses on TV. Luddenham Showground was the host to the first Australian Defence Force (ADF) and Veterans Day. ADF and Veterans with their families enjoyed a free day, with rides, entertainment, and exhibitions. Even though the weather wasn’t the best and it was very wet underfoot, thousands attended and enjoyed the day. New research has found that Luddenham is in the top 10 suburbs in NSW that are set to have massive rent increases. Also, Luddenham property sales are achieving massive numbers at the moment, with lots of investors wanting to invest in Luddenham. v [Top] The late Red Stokes [Left] Yogi and Nayana the new owners of the Post Office | Images Supplied

Mega Effort for Mega Mates Last month, a team of dedicated local swimmers took to the pool for a gruelling 24hour swim, whilst raising much needed funds for charity. The team of 19 swimmers, nicknamed MSMM Megaswim Mega Mates, took part in the MS Megaswim on 14th and 15th May at Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre. Swimming a total of 89.3kms over 24 hours, they have raised over $11,000, with $10,936 confirmed and another $600 awaiting to be added to the team’s tally. Representing Mulgoa was Jack, William, and Ava Barry of Penola Catholic College. Joshua Auld (Teacher’s Aide), Talan Quinn, Emma Borg (students) of Glenmore Park High School and Klarissa Goodwin of Penrith Anglican College represented Glenmore Park. The MS Megaswim involved teams swimming around the clock from midday Saturday to midday Sunday, always having a swimmer in the water throughout the 24-hours. Swimmers raise money in the form of donations and all money raised contributes to MS Go for Gold Scholarships, financial assistance programs and providing services to directly benefit people living with Multiple Sclerosis. “The team’s motivation was to use a sport that they all participate in or have participated in to help make a difference to the lives of sufferers of this chronic disease, Multiple Sclerosis” explained Charmaine Auld, mother of Joshua Auld and team spokesperson. “It is particularly close to the heart of two of the team members, who have seen firsthand how this disease has affected a family member over the last few years” she continued. Thirlmere Festival of Steam Wollondilly Shire Council and Transport Heritage NSW are pleased to present the 2022 Thirlmere Festival of Steam, which will now take place on Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 June 2022 following postponement in March. Building on 30 years of proud history, the new look festival will take place over two days and feature more steam locomotives than ever before. The festival is being delivered thanks to a new partnership between Wollondilly Shire Council and Transport Heritage NSW, operators of the NSW Rail Museum. Wollondilly Mayor Matt Gould said, “We’re proud to be able to host the state’s premier steam event here in Wollondilly”. “After an extended period of challenges including bushfires and COVID restrictions, this will provide a boost for tourism and the local economy as well as bringing back one of the community’s favourite events,” he said. Transport Heritage NSW CEO Andrew Moritz said, “We’ll have at least six historic engines in steam throughout the weekend at the NSW Rail Museum, including the recently overhauled, Legend of Steam Locomotive 3801”. “In addition to steam train rides, visitors can enjoy cab visits, steam machinery, live steam models and more all weekend at the NSW Rail Museum”. Are Breast-Fed Infants Vitamin K Deficient And If So, Why? Vitamin K deficiency bleeding disorder (VKDB) is common in newborns, with dire consequences for severe cases: 1. intracranial haemorrhage (50%),; 2. persistent neurologic impairment 3. 20% mortality-rate Risk of newborn VKBD is increased for: 1. Babies of mothers using a. warfarin b. anti-seizure medications c. antibiotic rifampicin d. mothers who’ve undergone bariatric surgery 2. Babies suffering: a. diarrhoea, coeliac disease, cystic fibrosis, cholestatic liver-disease b. liver-disease decreasing vitamin K utilisation Since most mothers/newborns don’t suffer these issues, why’s VKDB so common? Although paediatricians recommend breast feeding, the cause of newborn VKDB is clearly inadequate maternal vitamin K intake, leading to deficiency during pregnancy/lactation. To illustrate, when vitamin K injections aren’t given at birth, VKBD prevalence is: 1. 5/105 new-borns (Western Europe) 2. 11/105 (Japan) 3. 72/105 (Thailand) A study by Greer (2001), for 6 months, followed 119 fully breast-

10 June 2022 www.mulgoagazette.com.au

fed infants, who’d received 1mg vitamin K injections at birth, taking blood samples at 2, 4, 6, 8, 12, and 26 weeks. Researchers found that, despite receiving their vitamin K injection, babies had ‘persistently low vitamin K plasma concentrations’ in all samples from 4 weeks onward. Mothers’ vitamin K1 blood levels were also low, likely due to low intake. Researchers then measured PIVKA, a marker for vitamin K sufficiency, in cord blood of 156 full-term new-born infants, finding half of the babies had significantly low vitamin K levels. Finally, the mothers of these infants were found to be eating: 1. Just-equal-to or below the 60µg/day RDI for Vitamin K1, as it stood in 2005. 2. 33% below the 90µg/day RDI as currently recommended by Harvard university 3. 76% below the 250μg/day required to prevent osteoporosis according to the Framingham study The authors recommended higher intakes of vitamin K for pregnant and lactating mothers, suggesting lactating mothers supplement vitamin K1 at 5 mg/day to increase breast-milk levels to 80ng/mL, thus significantly increasing infant blood vitamin-K. The intake of vitamin-K required for optimal function of all vitamin-K-dependent proteins is still unknown. Given the high prevalence of newborn-VKDB, it seems highly likely most mothers aren’t eating the foods to meet babies’ vitamin-K requirements. If you’d like to learn how to eat better for pregnancy, why not call us at the clinic.

It is a face-to-face 12-hour class, split over 2 consecutive weekend days. They spend lots of time doing practical tasks as well as theoretical learning. “I’m a hypno-mum of a 2-and-a-half-year-old. Hypnobirthing kept my anxiety about birth at bay, taught me advocacy for myself in the birthing room and allowed me to leave my birth without trauma and feeling positive about the experience I had” Cassie finished. Infant Mental Health Awareness Week: What Do Babies Need Most?

Babies have long been misunderstood. When the field of psychology emerged in the early twentieth century, the earliest psychologists thought maybe infants just needed a reliable food source. Later, psychologists John Bowlby and Mary Ainsworth first sketched out the idea of “attachment”. Attachment refers to an infant’s need to connect emotionally with their primary caregiver. Babies know they are at the mercy of an adult to have their needs met. In the first 18 months of life, infants cannot even carry themselves from one place to another, let alone feed themselves! Babies communicate by facial expressions and movements. These “cues” signal an unmet need. For example, a baby may jerk its body and pucker its lips when it needs the breast or bottle. Babies experience optimal mental and physical health when their parents read their cues and respond appropriately most of the time. Thanks to brain imaging, we now know there is a massive brain growth in the first 5 years. A newborn’s brain weighs around 400 grams (approx. the size of an orange). By the age of 3, the size of a child’s brain has more than doubled to about 1100 grams (approx. the size of a pineapple). Experiencing a warm and responsive relationship with a parent in the early years builds healthy brains. Parents often feel confused or frustrated when their baby cries, especially when there is a lot of crying! Crying expresses the need for physical and emotional closeness to parents. Babies experience a lot of stress if they are left to cry alone. Large, frequent doses of hormones associated with the stress response, such as cortisol, can interfere with brain growth. Therefore, it is important to minimise stress by responding to baby’s cries promptly whenever possible. In summary, what a baby needs most is you. If you are struggling with anything mentioned in this article, you can consult an early childhood nurse by calling Tresillian Parent Help Line on 1300 272 73. Infant Mental Health Awareness Week runs every June to highlight the importance of babies' emotional wellbeing and development. Find out more at aaimh.org.au.

Luddenham Wakes Up with Today

The local community came alive on Tuesday 17th May, with The Today Show broadcasting their morning weather updates live from Luddenham Public School. Lara Vella from the Nine Network, joined students, teachers, and staff at the school for live crosses and weather updates from 5:45am to 8:30am. Each of the crosses gave the school the opportunity to showcase their programs which included Minecraft Club, Environment Club, Kindness Bracelets, Aboriginal Education Program and a special visit from Marcus Zorich, local koala expert. Luddenham Public School was chosen as a Today Show weather update location thanks to a student and his parents from the school emailing Nine Network. “It was great to have Lara and her crew visit the school. The event brought the community together. With the gates closed during COVID, there’s now a positive vibe around the school” said Sean Holmes, Principal of Luddenham Public School. A highlight video posted on the school’s Facebook page and has already had over 2,000 views. “We would like to thank the Willmington family for sending the email and Lara and her crew from Nine Network who were very accommodating with supporting and promoting our school” explained Sean. “Importantly, a big thank you to the community for getting behind us, including IGA Luddenham for donating food for breakfast and Outer Liverpool Community Services for providing breakfast for the students. And, of course, the students, teachers and staff of our school who arrived as early as 5:00am to help make this happen” he continued. r [L] The whole school with staff, crew, and community [R] Students with Marcus and Lara | Images: Luddenham Public School

Teaching the Next Generation of Skaters

Josie Revives a Dying Art

The local community of Warragamba were treated to a free skateboarding clinic at Warragamba Skate Park last month. Skate Now teamed up with Wollondilly Shire Council for a day of fun to teach skateboarders of all levels and abilities. “We ran some safe, fun, and inclusive beginner sessions for skaters who were just starting out and looking to learn basics. We also taught some advanced beginners who were keen to take their riding to the next level. The Wollondilly Shire Council team rocked up too and provided snacks and refreshments and engaged with skaters and families” said Danny Whittle of Skate Now. Danny, who has been skating since the age of 10, said that there are many benefits to skateboarding. “As a skateboarding educator, I see many other benefits such as getting kids outdoors, developing balance and concentration and gaining great life skills such as persistence and goal setting. Best of all, it’s a whole lot of fun and kids really need a positive outlet, particularly at this time” he explained. He also believes that it’s important to have local events like this in Warragamba. “These events benefit the community by activating spaces, introducing children and families to facilities such as local skateparks and breaking down barriers to getting people involved” Danny said to the Mulgoa Valley Gazette. “Beginners can learn in a supported environment at their own pace, gain confidence and get helpful knowledge such as ‘skatepark etiquette’. Intermediate riders and older kids can build on their skills and connect with other likeminded kids. We’re super keen to return to Wollondilly Shire soon and hope to be back at Warragamba in the near future!” he ended. Skate Now’s upcoming skateboarding clinics will be on 6th August at Bargo Skate Park and 5th November at Tahmoor.

It was once a favourite pastime enjoyed by many and now local Photographer Josie Goris of Josie On Film hopes to revive 35mm film photography. Josie, who is based in Warragamba, has been a 35mm Film Photographer for 7 years and a Digital Photographer for 2 years. She recently became a Professional Portrait Photographer in December last year. “I remember my mum Rosa always having a compact point and shoot film camera on her when I was growing up. Like most mums in the 90’s, she snapped photos of her kids any chance she got, and we have stacks of photo albums to prove it!” reflected Josie. “It makes me so happy to know a passion I have is keeping a dying art alive. I feel absolutely honoured to be amongst very few Professional Female Photographers in the community to still be shooting on 35mm film” she continued. Josie is also a Makeup Artist and Hairstylist. Her small business, Josie On Film, provides unique luxury experiences in Warragamba, the Blue Mountains, and South Coast. “I primarily shoot Women’s Empowerment Sessions, so I love seeing all kinds of women embracing their authentic self and am always blessed to be the one they trust to capture it,” said Josie. When on location for her portrait shoots, some of Josie’s favourite local areas to use include Haviland Park in Warragamba and Horse and Harpy in Silverdale. Her backyard in Warragamba is also the perfect spot for all things Astrophotography! Josie’s secret to taking the perfect photo is patience and practice. “Really give yourself a chance to learn photography. Everything I use is 100% manual as well and requires a lot of patience, practice, and just really trusting yourself to be artistic with the composition. Be kind to yourself, it can take years to master” she finished. To find out more about Josie’s work, visit Instagram.com/ josie.on.film, https://www.facebook.com/josieonfilm/ or email josieonfilm@gmail.com.

PAWS A WHILE

Article Written + Submitted by: Camille Brandt from Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital A: 49 Wentworth Rd, Orchard Hills P: 4736 2027

What is Leptospirosis? It can affect Dogs, Cats and Humans Leptospirosis is a disease caused by infection with a kind of bacteria called Leptospira. Leptospirosis can cause kidney failure and liver failure, and occasionally severe lung disease and bleeding disorders. The clinical signs of Leptospira infection vary considerably from no signs of infection, to just a mild illness of short duration from which the animal recovers quickly on their own, to severe disease and even death. With regard to companion animals, dogs are most susceptible to developing leptospirosis but generally infection is rare. Cats and other animals can also be affected, including humans. Outbreaks in some piggeries and cattle herds, particularly dairy, may occur in unvaccinated animals. Small mammals such as rodents are often carriers and shed the bacteria in their urine. Your pet can become infected and potentially develop leptospirosis if: • Their mucous membranes (i.e. lips, tongue, gums, inside of the eyelids) or any broken skin (i.e. a wound) comes into contact with infected urine or something that is contaminated by infected urine (for example, soil, water, food). • They eat tissue from an animal or carcass that is infected. • They are bitten by an animal that is infected. • Rarely, through breeding or if a pregnant female passes the infection through the placenta to her puppies. • Signs of leptospirosis may include: • Fever • Lethargy • Sore muscles and a reluctance to move

• • • • • • •

Shivering Increased drinking Increased or decreased frequency or amount of urination Dehydration Vomiting Diarrhoea Jaundice (where the skin and mucous membranes become yellow in colour) • Eye inflammation • Difficulty breathing • Bleeding (including blood in vomit or faeces, saliva, bleeding from the nose and small red spots on mucous membranes or pale skin from bleeding) • Fluid accumulation causing swollen legs, distended abdomen or restricted ability to breathe If you have any concerns about your pet, please contact your vet as soon as possible. Leptospirosis can be treated, usually with antibiotics and supportive care. The chance of recovery depends on how severely the dog is affected, and how quickly they receive veterinary treatment. What Can Be Done To Prevent Leptospirosis? There are vaccines available in dogs that can effectively prevent leptospirosis. You can also reduce your dog’s risk of infection by minimising your dog’s potential exposure to Leptospira bacteria. Avoid your dog drinking from or swimming in waterways that pose a potential risk and minimise their contact with potentially infected animals such as farm animals and rodents, including making sure that they do not eat carcasses.

Home + Community Care

Here we are in June with, not just a new month, but a new Australian Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese. We welcome Albo and congratulate our local Federal MP’s who have been elected to represent our communities. And, of course, Winter is now upon us. Fireplaces, hot chocolate, and warm blankets are keeping the cold chill at bay. It’s also the perfect opportunity to put your feet up and enjoy the June edition of ‘Your Community News’. Whether it’s Kid’s Corner, Paws A While or Health Matters, there’s something for everyone of all ages! We’ve been bringing local news and businesses direct to the letterboxes of over 27,000 homes across 20 suburbs and 83,000 readers for over 23 years; we value our advertisers and readers who continue to make this possible. We hope that you continue to reach your goals and beyond, as we head towards the second part of the year. Michele Ruiz once said, “If people are doubting how far you can go, go so far that you can’t hear them anymore”.
