New Park’nPay Accessibility Portal Goes Live
The NSW Government has already integrated 383 accessible parking spots across four Sydney councils. When completed, the program will cover roughly 3600 accessible parking spots across 30 Sydney Metro councils.
Mr Dominello said users would be able to select a spot with the recognisable wheelchair icon to indicate it is an accessibility bay with the spot being green if it is available to use or red if occupied.
“This is a great example of using technology to be more inclusive and this enhancement will make it easier than ever to plan a journey and find a parking spot,” Mr Dominello said.
“Instead of spending time and wasting petrol driving around looking for an accessible park, we have an innovative solution which gets drivers where they need to go.
“The Park’nPay app will also have an accessibility mode option where customers with a mobile parking permit can customise their experience to search for accessible parking, start a parking session and receive notifications.”
Vice President of Google Cloud – Australia and New Zealand Alister Dias said the NSW Government and Google share a vision for a strong and inclusive digital future for all Australians, and technology can play a pivotal role in helping deliver improved outcomes.
It is now easier for motorists with disabilities to find accessible parking across Sydney streets and carparks, thanks to a new nation-leading Park’nPay Accessibility Portal, giving drivers the power to search for hundreds of accessible spots with the tap of a button.
Minister for Customer Service and Digital Government Victor Dominello said the Accessibility Portal is an easy-to-use webbased platform, allowing people to search for accessible parking at their desired location, and filter for the time and day the space is needed as well as by parking type.
“We are continuing our journey to improve the accessibility of services for the more than 400,000 people with mobility parking permits and want to offer them an easy way to find parking before they leave their driveways,” Mr Dominello said.
“It can often be time-consuming for drivers with a disability to find a suitable parking space especially if they are unfamiliar with the area they are travelling to.
“Motorists will be able to use the Accessibility Portal to find a spot which best suits their needs, the number of accessible spaces at a location, get directions and real-time availability for accessible spaces.”
"Working closely with the Department of Customer Service and Physical Disability Council, Google Cloud is optimising the Park'nPay experience by analysing parking sensor data to provide real time parking and travel information, ensuring motorists with disabilities can better plan trips and park with ease,” Mr Dias said.
Physical Disability Council NSW CEO Serena Ovens said: “The Accessibility Portal further enhances our member’s capacity to source accessible parking information easily including the ability to check the streetscape they will be parking in.”
“Any information that assists people with mobility needs to better understand their parking options is welcomed. PDCN applaud Google’s involvement in the Park’nPay app as an important innovation that supports the inclusion of the disability community.”
Real-time parking data will come online in the app as each council area is onboarded and will be completed in 2023.
The Portal is a joint initiative between the NSW Government, Google and the Physical Disability Council of NSW.

40 Year Anniversary for Warradale FC
This year will mark an amazing milestone for Warradale FC, with the popular club celebrating their 40th Anniversary.
With newly appointed President Steve Keller taking over the reins, 2023 is looking to be a strong year for the club, both on and off the field.
Registrations opened online in January and numbers are filling fast. They are looking to cater for all age groups, from the Under 6’s through to the All Age Teams and Over 35’s. The Women’s World Cup is coming to Australia and New Zealand in July this year and they would love to get higher female registrations in all their age groups. This includes hopefully filling full female teams in the female competitions.
“I’m looking forward to the season kick off in late March. Being our 40th Anniversary year, I can’t wait to work alongside all of our committee to ensure it’s a special year. I’m excited for the 2023 Women’s World Cup. It will be a huge boost for female football all over Australia and New Zealand. Every year with this club is amazing. I just enjoy being amongst the great community we have here” said Steve Keller, President of Warradale FC.
There were many highlights for the club in 2022. Their first ever Premier League teams entered into the Waratah League (Men’s) consisting of a Reserves and First Grade team. Their Waratah League team very narrowly came second in the 2022 season competition, and then won the Grand Final in the end of season playoffs. The Division 4 Ladies, and Division 10 Men’s just missed making the Grand Final. Division 8 Men’s won their Grand Final in the end of season playoffs. after finishing 3rd in the season competition. They hope to have a Ruby League (Women’s) team in the future.
“We just keep growing year by year and we expect even more growth with all the new housing estates being built in our area” he added.
Last season saw around 280 players registered with the club. There are already 185 at this time of the registration period, which is tracking to be another big year.
Have you been in a committee roll or a past member of Warradale FC?
If so, Warradale FC would also like you to contact them in regard to attending their 40th Anniversary Night. Please email admin@ warradalefc.com and tell them your story, so that they can add you to their invite list.

The next big event will be the 117th Luddenham Show, that will be held on the 4th and 5th of March. The committee are currently looking for volunteers to work at the Show, including in the kitchen and bar. All details and schedules for the Show can be found on their website at luddenhamshow.com.au or the Luddenham Show Facebook page. If you would like to volunteer to help, please email secretary@luddenhamshow.com.au.
A big shoutout to Penrith Council for cleaning up the area on the corner of Roots Ave and Willmington Road. The area was overgrown, and you could not work along the footpath, you had to walk on the road.
Have you thought about setting up a business at Western Sydney Airport? Well, now is the time, with retailers looking to set up shop in Australia’s newest airport terminal being invited to register their interest as the process of creating a new shopping destination for Western Sydney gets underway. Registrations of Interest (ROI) are now open to establish shops, food outlets and travel services at Western Sydney International (NancyBird Walton) Airport. Western Sydney International Airport CEO Simon Hickey said establishing the right retail mix for the terminal was a crucial element in creating the best possible experience for passengers, visitors, and staff at Sydney’s new
airport. Further details are available on the Western Sydney Airport web page.
During February, Luddenham seemed to be hit with more storms then normal with damaging winds, heavy rain and even some hail.
With the State Election coming up on the 25th of March, some good news with Luddenham now being in the new seat of Badgerys Creek. Previously, Luddenham was half in Camden and Mulgoa electorates. It’s good to see some common sense.

Sydney’s Next Great Parklands To Be Established In Western Sydney
The historic Fernhill Estate will be transformed into one of Sydney’s great public parklands making it a central part of the NSW Government’s Western Parkland City vision.
A landmark $65 million investment, made possible by the NSW Liberals and Nationals Government’s $5 billion WestInvest Program, will transform the former private Fernhill Estate in Mulgoa into a 423 hectare public park.
The new expansive parklands will support the growth of the new Western Sydney Aerotropolis and will feature a network of paths and walking trails that will connect to the wider Mulgoa Valley, Penrith region and Blue Mountains National Park.
Premier Dominic Perrottet said this investment will secure, protect and enhance critical green space establishing a major new parkland for the people of Western Sydney – one of the youngest, fastest-growing and most diverse populations in the nation.
“We launched WestInvest to secure the best quality of life for families and make West and South West Sydney even better places to live and that is exactly what this project will do,” Mr Perrottet said.
“Parks and public spaces like this are Western Sydney’s answer to Centennial Park and Hyde Park in the east, a generational investment to leave a legacy of beautiful public spaces.
“Investments like this are only possible because of the NSW Liberal and Nationals economic plan for the future.”
The Greater Sydney Parklands will transform the former private property into an accessible public park showcasing the area’s great natural and cultural beauty. This will include:
• New and upgraded park entries for safe vehicle access into the Estate;
• A new estate drive and pedestrian promenade to allow people to walk to Fernhill House from key recreational areas;
• A network of pedestrian paths and walking trails connecting to the wider Mulgoa Valley, Penrith region and Blue Mountains National Park;
• 300m boardwalk around the Northern Dam and access for kayaks and small non-motorised watercraft;
• 1km arc of Indigenous planting in the shape of a lyrebird feather;
• A new nature-based playground and drop-off/pick-up zone for neighbouring Mulgoa Public School;
• Bush revegetation and new interpretative and wayfinding signage.
Treasurer Matt Kean said WestInvest is creating world-class public spaces for the growing Western Sydney population to enjoy now and into the future for exercise, excitement and relaxation.
“When we launched WestInvest, we asked Western Sydney residents what infrastructure projects would change their local areas for the better,” Mr Kean said.
“The huge majority of responses said they wanted new and improved open and green space and the opportunity to explore nature through walking and cycling tracks.
“Our WestInvest projects provide something for everyone from adventurers, to young families, to those who simply want to sit back and enjoy nature.”
Minister for Infrastructure, Cities and Active Transport Rob Stokes said the funding would ensure the Western Parkland City lives up to its name.
“We’re putting the park in the heart of the parkland city. Eastern Sydney has its harbour and beaches, Parramatta has its rivers and creeks, and Western Sydney will be defined by freshwater lakes and verdant parklands,” Mr Stokes said.
“WestInvest quite literally uses a motorway to fund a greenway, delivering a legacy of parks, paths and playgrounds for Western Sydney families to enjoy.
“It wasn’t that long ago that the public were almost locked out of Fernhill Estate forever and now it’s going to be completely transformed into one of Sydney’s most-cherished public spaces.”
Fernhill Estate was purchased by the NSW Government in 2018. The upgrades and improvements as part of this investment will take place over the next five years as part of The Foundation Plan of Management to 2026.

Full Steam Ahead for 2023 Thirlmere Festival of Steam
It’s full steam ahead for the 2023 Thirlmere Festival of Steam, which will bring the village of Thirlmere to life on 18 and 19 March.
The festival is once again being delivered by Wollondilly Shire Council and Transport Heritage NSW, operators of the NSW Rail Museum.
Visitors can look forward to steam train rides aboard the State’s rail heritage collection, demonstrations from local artisans, and the colourful annual street parade.
The iconic Huff n’ Puff race is making a long-awaited return to the festival this year, giving runners the opportunity to race against the beautifully refurbished 3001 engine.
In 2023, there will also be an expansion of the Saturday activities, an even bigger Family Carnival, local performers as well as the headline act Chris Sebastian, winner of The Voice 2020.
Wollondilly Mayor Matt Gould said, “We’re proud to be able to host the state’s premier steam event here in Wollondilly once again. I hope that everyone can get on board to take part in the fun.”
Transport Heritage NSW CEO Andrew Moritz said, “We’ll have at least six historic engines in steam throughout the weekend at the NSW Rail Museum, including Locomotive 3001; a 120-year-old steam locomotive that’s recently been restored by THNSW volunteers and staff.”
“In addition to steam train rides, visitors can enjoy cab visits, steam machinery, live steam models and more all weekend at the NSW Rail Museum.”
On Saturday 18 March, the NSW Rail Museum will be open with a variety of steam train rides, driver’s cab visits, a steam and vintage park, mini-train rides and more. The Family Carnival will take place at Thirlmere Sportsground, with carnival rides and activities from midday.

Westinvest Funds Huge Boost To Warragamba
From grassroots junior sports teams to elite athletes, residents across Western Sydney, including Wollondilly electorate, will benefit from a massive boost in funding for sports facilities, thanks to the NSW Government’s $5 billion WestInvest program.
Member for Wollondilly, Nathaniel Smith MP, recently announced that Waterboard Oval in Warragamba has received $4.92m from the $1.6 billion WestInvest Community Projects Grants – Competitive Round. The funding will upgrade Waterboard Oval, which includes two full-size soccer fields, a multipurpose cricket and AFL field and new car parking.
Warragamba has a rich local history and identity strongly linked to sport. Waterboard oval is also well located and attracts sporting clubs from other regional areas. These upgrades are well overdue and needed to match the growing community requirements.
Premier Dominic Perrottet said a sporting club is the heart and soul of a local community, and WestInvest is enabling communities in Western Sydney to grow, exercise and thrive.
“Through the WestInvest fund, we are laying the foundations to support the next Harry Kewell, Pat Cummins, Alana Kennedy, Ian Thorpe and Paige Hadley.”
Minister for Sport Alister Henskens said the WestInvest funding was another example of the NSW Liberal and Nationals Government’s strong track record of investment in community sport facilities.
“From grassroots sport through to the elite, these investments will turbocharge sport participation in Western Sydney, providing quality local facilities for players of all ages and abilities,” Mr Henskens said.

The Bunker Comes to Mulgoa
There’s a buzz in the air at Mulgoa Village, with The Bunker Café Bar Restaurant Mulgoa opening this month.
The exciting new café, which also has locations at Springwood and Leura, is planned to open on Wednesday 29th March, right in time for Easter and the school holidays! Trading hours will be Wednesday and Thursday 7:00am to 9:00pm and Friday to Sunday 7:00am to late.
They want to pay homage to the beautiful location and take it to the next level. This includes highlighting the Peppercorn Tree, which is an iconic part of the site.
There will be some great new features and some existing features that will be getting a refresh.
This includes a kid’s playground, pizza oven, fresh new outdoor dining options, takeaway coffee window, new bar, liquor service, water fountain, refreshed gardens and a new spot for weddings, functions and gatherings.
They chose Mulgoa as a new location for a number of reasons.
“We grew up in Warragamba and Silverdale and spent lots of time around Mulgoa when we were kids, so opening in Mulgoa is like coming home and we are really excited about this.
“I learnt everything I know about hospitability in the Penrith community and am excited to bring the Bunker where it all started for us” said Ross of Bunker Café Bar Restaurant.
“There is a lot of growth in Mulgoa and the surrounding areas, all the way from Silverdale to Penrith! The location is perfect for us to reach locals across numerous suburbs and we have been overwhelmed by the support we have already got from the local community.
“Combining a team of talented and driven people with locally sourced produce, we strive to deliver a casual dining experience at a consistently high standard. We offer a meeting place, a place to connect and a place that feels like home, whilst dining out. This coupled with 3 locations we now have has lead us to being the perfect location for events, weddings and even catering” he continued.
They look forward to coming to opening their newest location at Mulgoa.
“Community is a huge part of what we focus on. Locals can look forward to a new type of dining experience, close to home and to a venue that is a key meeting place for all sorts of occasions. We are always looking for ways we can connect to the community.
“At our Springwood venue, we are the hub for the local men’s support group, “Walk It Off”. We really enjoy bringing people together, specially to support health and wellbeing. This is also reflected in the food we serve; good quality, healthy food that brings people together” Ross ended.

FOOD 4 THOUGHT
Lunch at the Peachtree Hotel with Kylie, Katie and I was superb.
When we arrived, we were deciding on a few different options to try and settled on a share plate of cheeseburger spring rolls to begin with. The cheeseburger spring rolls were exceptional and full of flavour. The rolls were crisp, not drowned in oil and actually tasted like a cheeseburger. The rolls contained meat, some mustard, pickle, and cheese along with other ingredients.
The second choice we decided on for lunch was the Sea Breeze Plate. This share plate is made for two people, however, we wanted to share it among the three of us and I am glad we did. The Sea Breeze Plate consisted of dill and lemon battered blue eye whiting, grilled scallops, salt, and pepper squid, grilled crispy skinned barramundi, smoked salmon, garden salad, chips, dipping sauces and smoky BBQ sauces. This Sea Breeze Plate was amazing. The grilled scallops were presented in a shell which was round, and these scallops had a smooth texture. When you bit into the scallops, the flavour was immediately noticeable and wasn’t too strong. The sauce on the scallops had a slight lemon taste and the sauce gave extra flavour to the scallops. Without the sauce, the scallops would have been dry. I was impressed with the garden salad, along with the dressing and for something a little different I placed some smoked salmon on top of the salad. The salmon and salad together made your taste buds sing and this salad was one of the best salads I have tasted in a very long time. I really enjoyed the salt and pepper squid and the grilled barramundi.
The experience today was exceptional, and the staff looked after Kylie, Katie and I.

“I have been drawing since the age of three. My subjects were mostly characters from cartoons, comics, or animals. So, all of my life really. Art has featured somehow in most of the jobs I have had over the years” Sharon said to the Mulgoa Valley Gazette.
“In my early twenties, I was fortunate enough to get a job for a short time with Hanna Barbera in Sydney. This then led me to Burbank Studios in Paddington as an assistant animator, where I also did some work for Disney Studios. That was the realisation of a childhood dream! I have continued to draw and paint throughout my life, whenever I could find some time” she continued.
The ability to be creative was a power that inspired Sharon to start.
“It was more of a compulsion to create things that I found beautiful or interesting” Sharon replied.
When creating art, she uses different media, depending on the subject. Sharon is currently using charcoal combined with watercolour, as it produces a look that she believes helps convey a story to the viewer. She does, however, work with other media such as watercolour, graphite, ink and sometimes acrylics.
Sharon’s favourite subject to draw is something that we are privileged to have in Wollondilly Shire, “I would have to say wildlife. I also enjoy portraits when I can see a story in the subject. A particular look or expression will capture my imagination and I need to see if I can convey that to the viewer”.
What does she enjoy most about being an artist?
“I love having an outlet for my creativity. I enjoy the challenge of capturing an emotion in paint or charcoal and having someone react to that emotion. For me, art has been my constant companion, it can be very therapeutic” she ended.

Camden Show Returns
We’re back. The award-winning Camden Show is back for 2023 on Friday 24th and Saturday 25th March.
The birthplace of Australian agriculture, Camden really is the country near the city and with its motto of …’Still a Country Show’. It showcases all the traditional Agricultural Show favourites from the classic baking, handcrafts, artwork, and photography competitions in the historic Show Hall, to the vegetables and cheeses in the Produce Section and then to the Poultry Pavilion, where some of the best examples of birds from the district are on show.
The Heritage Lane showcases life in the past with steam machinery and tractors next to examples of today’s tractors and farm implements. The Drovers Camp offers up traditional tea and damper and, if you are interested in our cold-blooded friends, the Snake Man is always entertaining, and you can’t go past the Racing Pigs!
Our local schools compete in the Scarecrow Making Competition and the Entertainment Stage is a great way to see up and coming performers show off their talents. The Camden Show Committee has worked hard to ensure we provide various displays where learning and fun go together as well as this, we have an animal nursery for all ages, not just the little ones.
When Mum and Dad need to take the weight off, the Camden Style Pavilion showcases some of the best boutique food and wares in the region. If you are still looking for excitement, don’t forget the sideshow alley and incredible rides.
Other competitions include the sheepdog trials, ute show, sheep, goats, alpacas, beef and dairy cattle, dogs, wood chopping, show jumping and horse events on both days showcasing our many different equine friends from the gorgeous mini horses to the big clumping draught horses in all their finery.
Friday night has one of the best rodeo programs from Xtreme Bulls. This year, we welcome the Aussie FMX Team to the main arena on Saturday night, along with a jampacked Night Show program including a special tribute to our Emergency Services. All finishing with a big bang, thanks to the famous Foti Fireworks display and Pandora Macarthur and Narellan.
The Camden Show really is …’Still a Country Show’ with entertainment and something for the whole family to enjoy!
For more information and event details, go to www.camdenshow.com.
The Camden Show is run almost entirely by volunteers. It is run by the community, for the community!

Women Walking Strong
With International Women’s Day taking place this month, Penrith Women’s Walk and Talk will be marking the occasion on their weekly community walk with an important event.
“We will be celebrating the achievements of us all as women on International Women's Day on Wednesday 8th of March. There will be guest speakers, light refreshments and drinks will be provided” said Angela Lambros of Penrith Women’s Walk and Talk.
The inspirational women’s group meet every Wednesday night (5:00pm from March to September and 6:00pm from October to February), outside the Coffee Club Nepean River for a free sponsored coffee, tea or hot chocolate that has been donated from supporting local organisations. They proceed to walk the Great River Walk at 6:00pm.
“Our hope is that this walk and talk creates a safe space for women to discuss their mental health, whilst bettering their physical health and creating meaningful social connections” Angela explained.
They are also planning significant events throughout the year, which include Easter, Mother’s Day, Women’s Health Week, Mental Health Week, R U OK Day, International Friendships Day, plus more to come.
Penrith Women’s Walk and Talk celebrated their 2nd Birthday in November 2022. Angela is proud of the group’s success in this time.
“We have enjoyed our women coming together in support of all thing’s health; socially, mentally, and physically to connect. We believe having a strong support system helps support people to overcome challenges and maintain a state of mental well-being. Many ladies have now created lifelong friendships.
“We have also really loved how much the community has come together in support of us, especially the Penrith Men's Walk and Talk and all the kind-hearted local sponsors in our local area. We are so excited for all of our upcoming events and all the new connections women in our community can make” she ended.

Riding for the Disabled
Riding for the Disabled (RDA) Blue Mountains have been operating in Blaxland for the past 32 years.
The organisation provides a unique service for disabled children and adults in the community, using horses as a therapy tool. Participants connect with the horse, while taking part in fun activities/riding skills that have great mental and physical benefits. Their Centre is the only RDA in the Blue Mountains, serving the local area, Western Sydney and across the mountains as far as Lithgow.
They have Riding Therapy Classes and Horse Skills Sessions on Thursdays and Saturdays during the school term. During school holiday periods, they have individual and group sessions of Stable Management and Horse Skills for children with disabilities.
“We are always in need of new volunteers and will train people who have no experience with horses or disabilities, but a keen interest in becoming involved at RDA. We also require volunteers who prefer to do fundraising, maintenance, and gardening at the Centre” explained Brenda of Riding for the Disabled (RDA) Blue Mountains.
Brenda enjoys being a part of the team at Riding for the Disabled (RDA) Blue Mountains.
“Riding for the Disabled is a great organisation to become involved with. Volunteers gain new friends, experience caring for our special horses and see firsthand the difference and joy it brings to children and adults with disabilities” she said.
“RDA Blue Mountains receive no funding from Council or Government, but rely upon volunteer fundraising, donations, or sponsorship of our horses. If anyone would like to make a donation or local business sponsor one of our horses, please email us and we will forward information” Brenda replied.
Riding for the Disabled (RDA) Blue Mountains is located at 72 St. John’s Road in Blaxland. They can be contacted on Facebook (Riding for the Disabled Blue Mountains), via email at rdabluemountains@gmail.com or by phone on 02 4739 6829. Riding for the Disabled (NSW) also provides information regarding the organisation.

Can Simple Stretching Improve Your Cardiovascular Health?
Facilitated stretching is a part of almost every session of MET at our clinic. Stretching may reduce cardiovascular risk. In a 2017, study by Shinno etal. healthy women over 40yo were asked to stretch 3 times per week, for 3 or 6 months. They conducted 20-30 second static stretches of 15 muscle groups: trapezius, arm-flexors, deltoids, triceps, upper-back muscles (trapezius/ rhomboids), pectoralis major, latissimus dorsi, gastrocnemius, soleus, hip abductors, hip adductors, quadriceps, hamstrings, gluteus maximus, and lower erector spinae. Stretching intensity was participant-rated as “somewhat-heavy” to “heavy”.
To see whether the stretching routine had any long-term effects on blood vessels flexibility (compliance), researchers measured an index called RH-PAT both before and after 3 or 6 months of stretching. RH-PAT is determined by:
1. measuring normal arterial blood flow in the forearm, then
2. inflating an upper-arm cuff to stop blood flow for 5 minutes, then
3. releasing the cuff and measuring blood flow 1 min after cuff release.
4. Calculating the ratio of arm blood flow before cuffing and 1 min after cuff-release
5. This gives a ratio called the “reactive hyperaemia peripheral artery tonometry (RH-PAT) index”
RH-PAT is a “powerful predictor of all cause and cardiovascular morbidity and mortality”. It can predict:
1. endothelial (blood vessel lining cell) dysfunction
2. coronary artery disease & atherosclerosis
3. microvascular dysfunction following sepsis
4. coronary plaque formation
The arteries of healthy people are flexible/dilatable and have a higher HR-PAT index; people with cardiovascular diseases have a low HR-PAT index because their arteries have difficulty dilating.
So, how did regular stretching effect participants artery’s ability to dilate (health)?
a. all study participants had an RH-PAT index below 1.67 at the start of the study
b. both 3 and 6 months of stretching improved RH-PAT index significantly
c. a further 6-months of no-stretching saw RH-PAT index return to pre-intervention values
These results suggest regular stretching can increase the compliance (flexibility) of arteries, reducing cardiovascular risk, and that regular stretching may lead to health benefits beyond increased muscle-flexibility. Importantly, once women stopped stretching, accrued cardiovascular benefits were slowly lost over the following 6 months. So, the old imperative idiom of ‘use it or lose it’ certainly applies to the cardiovascular benefits of stretching too.

Diabetes & Your Feet
Diabetes occurs when the body is unable to maintain healthy levels of sugar in the blood. This can potentially cause serious issues, such as:
• nerve damage (neuropathy)
• reduced blood supply
• nail and skin issues
• wounds, ulcers & gangrene
• foot deformity
Foot complications can be avoided by taking precautions and acting immediately when problems arise*.
1) Inspect Feet Regularly
Look for cuts, scratches, and bruises, and ensure they heal well. Check for signs of infection (redness, swelling, pus, pain, wound worsening.)
2) Wear properly fitted footwear
Footwear should not crowd the toes, rub or slip. They should fasten to hold your foot in place, and must be supportive.
3) Inspect Footwear Regularly
Replace worn out shoes. Check inside for foreign objects like rocks.
4) Avoid Being Barefoot
Protect feet from injury by wearing shoes. Beware of walking on hot surfaces barefoot, particularly at the beach.
5) Avoid Direct Heat Sources
You can also accidentally cook your feet by putting them close to a heater to warm up. Extra layers of clothing or blankets are much safer.
6) Dry Between Toes
Wet skin between toes can macerate and break down. If you can’t reach your feet, use an air dryer or a drying spray like deodorant, antifungal spray or methylated spirits.
7) Moisturise Feet
Moisturiser will slow the process of hard skin formation, reducing painful fissuring and cracking that can be an infection risk. If you can’t reach your feet, use a long-handled sponge applicator.
8) Get Some Exercise
Exercise is the best way to keep the blood flowing to your feet.
9) Stay Hydrated
Remember to drink water!
10) Manage Diabetes
Keeping blood sugar levels under control is essential to avoiding foot complications.
11) See Your Podiatrist If You Have Diabetes
We recommend a thorough foot check at least once a year to assess the risk to your foot health and develop risk minimisation strategies.

Wollondilly Council Welcomes Pothole Repair Funding Announcement
Wollondilly Shire Council has welcomed the recent announcement of $9.5M road repair funding from the State Government’s Regional and Local Roads Repair Program to help address the flood damage across Wollondilly’s 870km road network.
Member for Wollondilly Nathaniel Smith MP made the significant funding announcement at the Council Chambers in Picton.
While Wollondilly was excluded from the first round of pothole repair funding, Mayor Matt Gould alongside other Mayors from the fringes of Greater Sydney have successfully advocated for additional support to help with the backlog of storm damage.
Mayor Gould said, “In response to a series of extreme weather events and the wettest year on record for our Shire in 2022, we have been working extremely hard to get on top of approximately $140m of significant damage that was done to our roads.”
“Whilst unfortunately we still have a long way to go to fully repair all the damage, it is great to see that an additional $9.5M will be added to our road repair budget on top of the record amount of funding we have already committed to assist us with the massive task of getting our roads fixed.”
“These funds will be directed to targeted reconstruction/heavy patching and repair works all over our wonderful Shire, from Bargo to Warragamba, Buxton to Menangle, Appin to Oakdale, Tahmoor to Douglas Park. Every corner of the Shire will see substantial works on the ground in the next phase of our massive road repair program.”
“I say to everyone – if you see a pothole, please make sure you report it using our online Customer Portal or by calling Council so we can get out there and get it looked at as soon as possible.”
“I have worked closely with other councils as well as Member for Wollondilly Nathaniel Smith MP to make sure the NSW Government is aware of the critical road issues that we are facing in the Shire.”
“Nathaniel and I met with several key ministers late last year to push for additional support for Wollondilly, so it’s great to see that Council’s strong advocacy on this issue was listened to and we are now getting some much-needed help.”
“I will also be continuing to advocate for some of our regional roads to be reclassified as State roads so that we can focus on getting our local roads fixed for our local residents,” he said.

Harmony Week: Supporting Kids to Understand & Accept Diversity
Australia is home to one of the oldest continuous cultures, as well as Australians who identify with over 270 ancestries. Our cultural diversity is one of our strengths and an important source of national identity. However, racism remains a destructive force in Australian society. Research shows that social attitudes first take root in early childhood. Children learn prejudice from the grown-ups around them in the same way that they develop language.
Children learn the most by observing the behaviour of adults around them. Children listen carefully to how parents and caregivers speak about different groups in society and may adopt similar attitudes accordingly. Likewise, observing how parents and caregivers interact with different members of society teaches children how to behave around people who are different to them. Parents and caregivers who model kind words and actions set a valuable example for children to follow.
It is important to respond to children’s questions with matter of fact and age-appropriate explanations. Young children are naturally curious and often notice physical differences between people early on. For example, a child may notice that another child at her day care has a darker skin tone and asks you about this. An appropriate response might be, “some people have different skin colour and different eye colour and different hair colour.”
When discussing differences between people, point out and highlight the similarities as well. You can talk about how even though people look different, we all have similar feelings. Encourage children to seek out common interests or likes/ dislikes with children who might appear different to them. Sharing something in common, no matter how small, can bring different groups together.
Join in multicultural family events and experiences to learn more about the different cultural or religious groups in your community. Find out how your child’s school or early education centre is celebrating Harmony Week. For details on community events for the whole family, see harmony.gov.au.
As parents and caregivers, you can play an important role in helping children understand, respect, and appreciate cultural diversity.
Luddenham Show Promises to be their ‘Biggest Show Yet’!
After a two year hiatus, the stage is set for the return of the Luddenham Show on 4 and 5 March. The 117th Luddenham Show will have a mix of new and traditional agricultural events. The Showground has increased its capacity since the 2020 Show, with a new cattle arena, new cattle and poultry pavilion, new grandstand seating and new asphalt walkways. With thousands expected through the gates across the weekend, the committee is looking forward to its biggest show yet.
With a full line up of entertainment across the weekend, there is something for everyone to enjoy around the Showground. The bull ride Saturday night is expected to attract some of the best bulls and riders from across NSW with a prize pool of over $2,000 up for grabs. New to the Show this year is the Eljay Freestyle Motorbike and BMX Stunt/Comedy Show, which will be performed on both Saturday and Sunday. Wheelie bin races and gumboot throwing also make an appearance as well as classic Luddenham events such as the sheep dog trials, dog high jump, demolition derby and woodchopping. With two days of horse competitions, and hotly contested poultry and cattle events, there will be plenty for the entire family to enjoy.
If watching stage entertainment is more your scene, well they also have you covered! The traditional Poet’s Breakfast will kick start the Show, before a range of talented entertainers take the stage across the weekend. With singers, dancers, magicians, reptile shows and a bush balladeer in the line-up, the family will be entertained from morning to night! For those who are looking to participate in the action, Saturday night will see a mechanical bull for punters to enjoy, whilst Sunday is jam packed with events ranging from whip cracking to the famous ice cream eating competition. This year sees the introduction of the Lego master creator’s competition, where teams of two children build Lego in front of the crowd to take out the title of Luddenham’s best Lego creators. With live bands, fireworks and the side show alley, the packed schedule means there will always be something to grab your attention.
To help them put on a great show, they require your participation and entries! Whether its baking, photography, decorating a gumboot or creating some homebrew, they have a diverse range of competitions for everyone. Entries to the arts and crafts pavilion are free with cash prizes on offer, whilst horse and cattle entries attract a small entry fee. Find all of the details using the contact details below or pick up a show schedule from local businesses in Luddenham.
Luddenham Showground is on the corner of Park Rd and Campbell Street and is one of only three grounds in the state still wholly owned by the community. As a result, the annual show raises much needed funds for the upkeep of the facilities as well funding future shows. Luddenham A.H & I Society boasts a proud history dating back 1891, when it was reported in the papers of the time “Luddenham may fairly lay claim to having the best first show ever held in the colony!”. This year’s committee, many of whose forebears were among the first organisers, are determined to live up to that high standard.
The committee, a small but very hard working band of local volunteers, would like to thank all our sponsors as well as the army of great helpers who lend a hand to make this country event such a success.

The Luddenham Lions Begin to Roar!
2023 will be a big year for Luddenham Lions Junior Rugby Union Club (JRUC), with the focus on establishing the club, registering teams in the Sydney Junior Rugby Union (SJRU) Competition to represent the area, and building rapport with the community.
Awhina Martin is the President of Luddenham Lions JRUC. “I’m a believer in the motto ‘you are only as strong as the people behind you’ so local endorsement and support is the key to Luddenham’s success” she said to the Mulgoa Valley Gazette.
This season, the junior rugby union club’s focus is on the Minis (Under 6’s to Under 9’s). This is because these players will become the future of Luddenham. The SJRU held a fun day last month (Saturday 18th February), that was specifically for the Minis. Wahu contributed some exciting goodies for the junior players, as well as tickets to watch the Waratahs.
“We hope to register a few other teams pending numbers but the goal is to simply get kids playing rugby so we have other options should we need it” stated Awhina.
She may have only been in the role of President for only two months, but already Awhina is enjoying the challenge.
“I’m continually learning and developing in the role which is rewarding. I’ve been fortunate to have support from various people and clubs who are committed to promoting junior rugby including Adam Fletcher, Penrith RSL Junior Rugby Club, the President of Penrith District Junior Rugby Union and the Western Raptors Senior Rugby Club.
“We plan on getting involved with some upcoming Luddenham community events to introduce the Club and people behind it. I would love to have locals join in our campaign, so families have more options for junior sport in the area”.
Awhina is dedicated to help the club grow.
“I plan on continuing in this role or something similar in the years to come. I’m committed to seeing Luddenham Lions up and running with players registered in minis, girls and boys” she explained.
“To all our valued Luddenham community, reach out and say hi! Check us out on Facebook and Instagram. We welcome everyone and if you are keen to get involved, please let us know” ended Awhina.

The Importance of Desexing your Cat
It has been calculated that, in just seven years, one female cat and her offspring can produce as many as 420,000 kittens. This is a major problem and highlights the importance of desexing male and female cats at an early age to reduce the number of unwanted animals in our community.
In addition to preventing unwanted litters, desexing may result in a positive behavioural change in your cat. Desexing may also minimise the chance of your cat developing reproductive organ-related health issues that can threaten your cat's life.
A desexed cat (male or female) are less likely to
• Wander or run away. Desexed cats generally have a reduced inclination to roam, which means they are less likely to roam off your property and reduces the risk of traffic accidents. It also increases the likelihood that your desexed cat will adapt better to a live indoors.
• Become involved in fights over territory or mating partners. This reduces the likelihood of injuries such as abscesses and infected wounds which may be fatal.
• Contract Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV). Also known as Feline AIDS, this can be contracted through fighting with other infected cats.
• Develop tumours such as uterine, ovarian and mammary (breast) cancer in females and possibly testicular cancer in
males.
• Display anti-social behaviour towards people or other animals. This makes pet ownership less enjoyable and disrupts the human-pet bond.
• Spray or mark its territory, which is usually in the house.
A cat can have an average of 4–6 kittens per litter. Each kitten must be fed, wormed, and treated for fleas. It is also a legal requirement that each kitten be vaccinated and microchipped before they are sold or given away. These costs can add up, making desexing a much easier and less expensive option.
The appropriate age for desexing can vary depending on the breed and size of your cat. Generally, it is best done before puberty (approximately six months of age) although the operation can be done at a later age. Local Council regulations require cats to be desexed by four months of age unless a letter of exemption is supplied by the treating veterinarian.
If you would like more information about desexing, microchipping or registration of your cat phone and chat with our friendly team at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital on 0247 362 027.

Flood Alerts at your Fingertips
Residents across NSW can now receive the latest flood and fire warnings in the palm of their hands, with the launch of the NSW Liberal and Nationals Government’s Hazards Near Me app.
The widely used Fires Near Me app, which has more than four million users, has been expanded and renamed to include flood alerts from the NSW State Emergency Service (SES), delivering on a key recommendation of the independent Flood Inquiry.
Minister for Customer Service and Digital Government Victor Dominello said it is critical for the community to have access to the latest information when it matters most.
“Being informed in an emergency situation can save lives, and the Hazards Near Me app will help people stay safe during fires, floods and other natural disasters,” Mr Dominello said.
“The app has been jointly developed by the Department of Customer Service, SES and NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS), and I’m excited that app users will see additional features roll out in the future.”
Minister for Emergency Services and Resilience and Minister for Flood Recovery Steph Cooke said empowering people with information is key to improving emergency responses.
“The independent Flood Inquiry identified the need for a single source of advice that can provide warnings for different types of hazards, and this app delivers on our commitment,” Ms Cooke said.
“In an emergency every minute counts. Hazards Near Me will provide reliable and timely information directly from emergency services so people can make decisions to keep themselves and their families safe.”
RFS Commissioner Rob Rogers said the NSW community has shown how important apps are during emergencies.
“For more than a decade, the NSW community has used Fires Near Me for bush fire information, and with nearly three million downloads during the 2019-20 bush fire season, it’s a trusted source for fire information and warnings,” Commissioner Rogers said.
“The Hazards Near Me app builds upon this experience, familiarity and extensive user base by allowing people to see localised and customised information based on the hazards in their area.”
SES Commissioner Carlene York said the app is another way that emergency services can alert the community when action is required.
“In recent months, the SES has delivered a new approach to flood warnings in NSW through the adoption of the three-level Australian Warning System,” Commissioner York said.
“The app will not only show where floods are happening and what people should do, but also alert users when new information is available so they can stay up-to-date and make safe decisions”.
Existing users of Fires Near Me will need to update their app through their phone’s app store. New users can download the app by searching for ‘Hazards Near Me’ in their app store.
Car Lovers Unite
Sydney Cars & Coffee is a local event for car enthusiasts held each month at Luddenham.
Taking place at Workers Hubertus on the third Sunday of every month from 7:00am, participants show up and park to show their cars, with others coming to see the cars on show. Food and beverages (i.e., coffee) are available from the Club.
Craig Oates originally started the popular event at Krispy Kreme’s Penrith in 2014 with 30 cars. He brought it over to Workers Hubertus in 2018, as the event was continually growing and it required more space.
Craig is now stepping back and handing it over to the club to run. Workers Hubertus appreciate all that he has done over the years and all that he has accomplished for the car community.
When bringing a car to show at the event, participants are encouraged to show up first thing in the morning and park for the day’s activities. Spectators can drop in anytime during the day to see the amazing cars on display.
CEO of Workers Lifestyle Group, Morgan Stewart said, “Sydney Cars & Coffee returned to Workers Hubertus with a roar and the biggest crowd we’ve seen. At Workers, we are pleased to see the return of major events to our venues, and we look forward to hosting this event again. It is awesome to see these enthusiasts come together to share their passion for vehicles, while enjoying the hospitality of our club”.
Workers Hubertus regularly uses the space at the club for fun events for all the family. They have an Outdoor Cinema coming up this month in March, Easter activities for April and their traditional Mayfest held in May.

When I was a young teenager, I used to pick on my younger brother. I mean really pick on him. I suppose it was easy entertainment. He was three years younger, and it wasn’t a fair situation for him to be in. It had just become the pattern of our relationship and I wasn’t at all concerned about, but it wasn’t right.
One holidays, we were staying at my grandmother’s farm, and she saw what I was doing first-hand. She was a passionate follower of Jesus and wanted us to be shaped by Him as well. Over the dinner table, when it was just the two of us, she challenged me about how I was treating my brother. I respected my grandma and the words hit home hard. From that day on, I decided to act differently and have only ever tried to be kind towards my brother. I can thank my grandmother for that!
There are always times in life that we need someone to challenge us, to reshape us and point us in the direction we should be going. It gets harder the older you get. It is easy to be even more stuck in your ways and even less likely to have people who will challenge you. Do you have someone in your life who will challenge you? Can you be that person for someone else? The Bible teaches us in the book of Ecclesiastes that: “it is better to heed the rebuke of a wise person than to listen to the song of fools.” (Ecclesiastes 7:5).
