StreetArt Project Adopt an Environment has worked in partnership with Warragamba Silverdale Neighbourhood Centre, local artist Jessica Gauci and Wollondilly Shire Council on a StreetART project in Warragamba. The building next to the Warragamba Skate Park has been transformed into a canvas and young people between the ages of 12 to 19 are the artists. The artwork was designed and completed by the students with the assistance of their Art Teacher - Jessica Gauci. There were 10 students involved in the project with their aim to beautify the skate park and combat graffiti in Warragamba. Warragamba Skate Park is a graffiti hotspot with vandalism a big problem, so the StreetART class worked together to design meaningful street art in the hope that their peers respect their work and avoid vandalising this space. A water theme was chosen, to reflect Warragamba’s history and close ties to the Dam and the stencils were all created with a message around water and sustainability. Messages ranged from a water tree, scenic water portraits and water creatures.

FROM THE EDITOR Can you believe we are almost half way through the year? I know it's cliché, but, where did the time go? As the year races by, we find ourselves in Term 2 of school; Easter has been and gone, with Mothers Day just around the corner. In the blink of an eye it will be the end of financial year and we'll be donning our winter woollies! This month, it’s all about ART! From Warragamba’s StreetART to Picton’s illuminARTe, we have it all. The search for a Junior Mayor and Junior Councillors is on again, see page 9 for all the details; while page 16 highlights the latest happenings at the Warradale Men’s Shed. With Mothers Day falling on the second Sunday in May, Narelle writes an insightful and very thoughtprovoking article about positive relationships on page 8. Well worth a read! Sometimes, the hardest thing and the right thing, are often the same. Enjoy your Community News.

Recent Road Conditions Wollondilly has recently experienced extreme weather with high rain fall. This has resulted in dangerous conditions on our roads with an increasing number of potholes forming. We ask that people drive safely and to the conditions of the roads, especially on the high speed commuter roads such as Remembrance Drive, Silverdale Road, Montpelier Drive, Picton Road and Appin Road. Please also be aware of council and emergency services crews that are attending to urgent road repairs, blocked drains and accidents. Please report all pot holes to Council on 4677 1100. In a life-threatening emergency, people

should call triple-zero, otherwise the SES number is 132 500. NSW SES advises people in these areas to: • Never drive through floodwater. • Avoid low lying areas as well as rivers, creeks and storm water drains. • Move to higher ground if bad weather sets in. • Don’t go sightseeing – you’ll be getting in the way of our volunteers. • Stay up to date with the latest traffic information at livetraffic.com . • For emergency help in a storm call the SES on 132 500 • Dial 000 in a life-threatening situation.

FAITH – ANGLICAN PARISH of MULGOA Minister Matt Olliffe P: 4774 0422 M: 0401 958 161 Sunday Service times: 8:30am St Thomas’ Mulgoa. 10:30am St Paul’s Warragamba. 7pm Glenmore Park Anglican Church.

School Scripture, or ‘Special Religious Education’: A Foundation For Faith and Life One of the blessings of living in NSW is access to Special Religious Education (SRE), commonly called ‘Scripture’, in our public schools. Under the (NSW) Education Act 1990 section 32, accredited churches and other religious bodies can teach age-appropriate lessons once a week, usually of 30 or 40 minute duration. The teachers are often volunteers. Most are very experienced. NSW legislation requires they have working with children checks. The curriculums are approved by the NSW DET. Parents have the legal right to decide whether their child attends SRE or not (see section 33 of the Act). Nonscripture is offered for those parents who do not wish their children to attend any offered class. Any religious group is able to apply for accreditation with the NSW DET. My four children attend local state schools. I am glad that I can choose to have my children learn about God from people of faith in our state school. Maths, English, Geography and History are important. Sport and Music are great. But learning about Jesus and faith in him in school normalizes faith and religion and belief in God. Our five accredited Anglican SRE teachers prize and value teaching the kids that come to Anglican SRE. We are thankful for the support and partnership with our local schools. Each year we also have two Combined SRE Assemblies (Catholic and Anglican together), at Christmas and Easter time. We look together at an aspect of the New Testament accounts of Jesus Christ’s birth, death and resurrection. We sing songs about God’s love for us or an aspect of Jesus’ ministry or teaching, we do memory verses, have quizzes on what we’ve learnt, and almost always have a puppet show featuring “Billy” the Dog, the star of the show. I think the kids really enjoy these times, even the older ones. In the 2011 census, over 60% of people identified as Christian. Allowing Scripture in our State schools recognizes the part faith in God plays for the majority of Australians. Western civilisation has been built on the teachings of Jesus Christ and Christianity. Australia have historically benefitted enormously from the wisdom of living in accordance with faith in Jesus Christ. Democracy, the separation of powers, many of our laws, and our scientific successes, are all part of the ‘social capital’ that stems from biblical Christian presuppositions. This explains the difference between us and the Middle East and South Asia. We must not deprive our children of this heritage. Sadly, kids have to deal with the big issues of life and death. They grieve over a broken friendship or the death of a grandparent or other relative. Kids have to pick up the pieces after a divorce. School can be a hard and sometimes cruel place. And kids are thinking about God. Is God there? Is there more to life than just what we see? How should I treat others? What did Jesus say and do? What happens after we die? Christian SRE gives kids the resources to deal with these perennial human issues. The internet, the media and peer pressure will soon offer our kids many temptations, options that look good but are disastrous in the long run. We should at least give them access and exposure to Jesus Christ and his wisdom before these temptations take root. Staples of SRE in my classes are the 10 Commandments, the Golden Rule, the Lord’s Prayer, the Christmas and Easter story, and God’s promise of a rescuer, Jesus Christ, in the Old

Testament, and its fulfilment in the New Testament. Timeless bible stories have spoken wise words for thousands of years. The themes have continuing relevance: we all need and should give forgiveness; we are called to love our enemies as well as our friends, because that is what he himself did when he died for us; that there is hope beyond sadness, sickness and suffering through Jesus. Jesus in fact offers us life to the full, the best possible life, eternal life (John 10:10). Let me encourage you to support SRE or ‘Scripture’ in your local schools. Success for Picton’s illuminARTe Festival

Picton hosted its biggest event to date with the first illuminARTe festival held last month. Thousands flocked to Picton for the day and stayed on to experience the digital projections onto landmark buildings during the evening. Menangle Street was transformed with projections illuminating six buildings and breathtaking 3D imageries lighting the Evergreen Tree alongside the Wollondilly Shire Hall. Led by Khaled Sabsabi, renowned digital artist, a number of local artists and students from local schools worked to make the project extraordinary. The Wollondilly Arts Group kicked off the festival with the opening of an art exhibition in the Wollondilly Shire Hall. The streets were abuzz with markets, music and food, with family fun at the RSL Memorial Park. On the main stage Picton Harvest Music Festival brought the event alive, with live performances by local musicians throughout the day and into the evening. Street performers entertained spectators and diners as they soaked up the vibrant atmosphere. A highlight of the evening was the Walker Corporation Lantern Parade. Kassandra Bossell conducted workshops leading up to

the event, for children and families to make their own lanterns and join in the display. Kassandra also contributed her own spectacular white waratah centrepiece for the procession. Mayor Cr Col Mitchell was thrilled with the success of the Festival. “This is great for Wollondilly and shows just how much our community, towns and villages have to offer. The event attracted thousands of tourists to Wollondilly, and the collaboration and teamwork of volunteers, local businesses, community groups and sponsors has once again done our community proud.” “This event was supported by a number of sponsors including Walker Corporation, Glencore Tahmoor Underground, Country Valley, C91.3FM, Vintage 88.7 FM, Wollondilly Advertiser and Macarthur Chronicle.” “Other organisations that made this event possible included Southern Tablelands Arts (STARTS), Regional Arts NSW who contributed funds through the CASP Program, Wollondilly Shire Council’s Arts & Culture working group, local schools and the Picton Chamber of Commerce & Industry.” “I would like to thank all the staff from Wollondilly Shire Council who worked tirelessly to bring this event together.”

Pastors Corner Have you noticed that summer is behind us, and that we are now heading through the season of autumn moving towards our destination winter? Those cooler to cold days, change the way we live, what we wear, our choice of foods and even the type of things that we do. Most of us have a preference for a particular season; some of us prefer summer, the heat and sunshine is so good; others find summer far too hot, they wait for the cooler weather; some favour spring, for its freshness; for those with a “green-thumb , their gardens reflect the oncoming winter, as leaves fall during the autumn season. It is good that we are different. Most of us have experienced those times, when life seemed easy and comfortable, but there have been those times when we are challenged, the loss of loved ones, friendships, health, independence, career, lifestyle, perhaps even our sense of the purpose for life itself. The Bible speaks of the different seasons in life, “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven: a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot, a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build, a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance, a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them, a time to embrace and a time to refrain, a time to search and a time to give up, a time to keep and a time to throw away, a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak, a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace. (Ecclesiastes 3:1-8). My prayer for each of you, is that you will find peace and strength through a personal faith in Jesus and that you will enjoy life’s journey, as season goes by. God bless Lyndon Rumsey (Article submitted and written by)

PARENTS CORNER

Article by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) Nepean Student-Wellbeing Worker – Mulgoa Public School, Nepean Community & Neighbourhood Services Ph: 0409 986 121 Centre: 4721 8520 Blog: http://handsheartsminds.wordpress.com

Positive Parenting

Phil Nunn, an Australian psychologist, says that parenting is like having a rope around your waist. Parenting is all about knowing when to let the rope out and when to reel it in. I take this metaphor a little bit further. The rope around your waist is the relationship you have with your child. No rope = no relationship. Without a relationship there is no letting out and no reeling in. Your child is flailing about at the end of the rope without being hitched to something. That’s a dangerous and scary place for a child to be. In my experience most of these kids look angry. This anger masks hurt, all children want to feel connection and belonging with their primary caregivers. Without a strong and positive parent-child relationship, your child will not listen to you and will not do as you ask. It really is that simple. I believe that having a strong relationship with your child is the most important thing that you can do as a parent. I reckon that building relationship is about 80% of the parenting effort. So, if you are disciplining and punishing your children about 80% of the time, then think about taking an about-turn, and concentrate on relationship instead, and see how that changes things. So, how do you develop a positive relationship with your child? Hugs, touch, care, unconditional love, attention, spending time with them, descriptive praise, nurture, listening to them when they talk, are relationship builders. Things like put-downs, name calling, criticism, teasing, telling them that they are ‘bad’ or ‘naughty’, and swearing at your kids are relationship killers. If you don’t like being treated that way, don’t treat your kids that way. Lots of parents say to me, “I don’t have time to spend lots of time with my children”. Phooey! You’re already spending lots of time yelling at them, arguing with them, and punishing them. What about the chores? The washing-up police aren’t going to knock on your door any time soon. And here’s the best-kept secret to parenting – spending small amounts of time (a few minutes) regularly throughout the day is worth

8 May 2015

www.mulgoagazette.com.au

more to your child than spending a half day per week. If you are not doing anything super-important, stop to listen to them or look at what they want to show you. Top up their emotional cup as often as you can. If you are reading this, and you think that your relationship is not that great with your kids, and they are angry at you, not listening to you, and not doing as you ask, then it is not too late. It’s never too late to build a relationship with your child. Dr Robyn Dolby also uses the rope metaphor to explain how parents relate to their children. She says that if your child is used to being out on the end of the rope most of the time, then you need to reel the rope IN very slowly. Some parents pull on the rope too hard, and the child pulls harder. That will lead to even more fights. Nope, just reel that rope in very, very slowly, and prove to your child that you can be trusted to be the parent they need you to be. The same can be said for children who have been kept too close and too controlled (over protected) or kids who experience anxiety. You need to let the rope OUT very slowly, so they don’t get scared. Relationship. It is essential to growing strong, resilient, healthy, and happy humans. Kids don’t need stuff, they need YOU. The relationship you have with your child is their first experience of love. They will take what you teach them into their friendships and their intimate relationships. What are you teaching them about love?

As part of Local Government Week 2015, Penrith City Council is giving lucky students from Primary schools across the Penrith Local Government Area, the opportunity to be Junior Mayor or Junior Councillors and take part in a mock Council meeting. Now in its fourteenth year this competition gives our future local politicians a chance to dabble in local government and democracy. Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler OAM said the competition provides a unique opportunity for primary students to learn about the role of Council in the local community. “We’re giving one lucky student the chance to be Junior Mayor and 14 others the chance to be Junior Councillors,” Cr Fowler said. “I only wish there had been a competition like this when I was growing up. This is a fantastic opportunity for our young residents.” In keeping with Penrith’s Bicentenary celebrations, the 2015 Junior Mayor competition has a Bicentenary theme. To enter the competition, students need to outline what they think the City of Penrith will be like in another 200 years. Entries must fit on one A4 piece of paper, or be an audio visual file. Entries can be a story, poem, an artwork or comic strip. “I’m looking forward to seeing the entries,” Cr Fowler said. “We’re always looking for good advice from the community - no matter the age of residents.”Entries must be submitted by Friday 29 May 2015. The winning Junior Mayor and Junior Councillors need to be available to attend introductory meetings at Council’s Civic Centre on Monday 15 June and Monday 13 July 2015. The mock Council meeting will be held on Monday 3 August 2015. For more details on how to enter - go to penrithcity.nsw.gov.au or contact Colin Dickson on 4732 7645.

Sift the flour into a large mixing bowl. Make a well in the centre. Whisk the buttermilk and egg together in a jug. Pour the buttermilk mixture into the well and whisk to make a smooth batter. Melt half the butter in a medium non-stick frying pan over medium heat until foaming. Spoon 80ml (1/3 cup) of the batter into the pan and top with apple slices. Cook for 1 minute or until bubbles appear on the surface and the pancake is golden underneath. Turn and cook for a further minute or until golden. Repeat with remaining batter and apple slices, greasing pan with butter before each batch. (To freeze, see below.) To make lemon-spiced butter: combine the butter, mixed spice and lemon rind in a small bowl. (To freeze, see below.) To serve: Spread pancakes with lemon-spiced butter and arrange in a stack. Top with berries and serve immediately.

4 Rules for Apologizing We all mess up. It’s just part of being human and connecting with other humans. So we all need to apologize once in a while. The thing is, a bad apology can be worse than no apology at all. So here are some tips on getting it right—and these also help me recognize what’s wrong if someone else’s apology feels icky. Be clear Name what you’re apologizing for. With adults, it can be easy to misunderstand why someone is upset. Being clear in the apology helps the listener to know that you understand what happened. “I’m sorry that I lost my temper” or “I’m sorry that I broke your chair” are more helpful than a blanket “I’m sorry.” Only apologize for your actions Have you ever had someone apologize by saying, “I’m sorry you got upset?” That’s not an apology. Neither is “I’m sorry but you…” or “I’m sorry but I…” An apology is not the place for justification or blaming. The apology is the place where you own your stuff. Many of our mistakes happen when we’re not our best selves— the apology is evidence that you recognize it wasn’t the best choice. And when it comes to owning our stuff, doesn’t matter whether the other person overreacted or baited you, the fact is that you didn’t behave as you wish you would have. Later you can think about the fact that this person baits you or otherwise. Commit to not doing the thing again Many of us have known someone whose apologies don’t seem to weigh much because they do the same thing over and over again. Part of being sorry means that you are committing not to make the same mistake again. Be sincere With this one comes the image of the child, chastened by an authority figure, who looks at the floor and mumbles, “sorry” before running off. However, the adult equivalent is when someone dashes off a quick “I’m sorry” before launching into a litany of complaints an accusations. This is the child that grew up thinking that an apology was a cursory and thoughtless gesture. Even if you meant no harm, even if your mistake was innocent and small, take a moment and reflect on the pain that was caused.

Article by: Karen Klein - Healthy Living Clinic Ph: 0404 295 297 A: Unit 6/51 York Road, Penrith

Is Your Sleep Affecting Your Health? The average person today gets much less sleep than a person living 100 years ago. Daylight savings, shift work, television, computers, mobile phones and social media keep us up later and intrude on the time nature has allocated for “true restâ€?. Such changes to our sleep patterns are significant because light controls a number of hormonal and chemical messages in the body, and studies are now linking sleep deprivation with many of today’s concerning health problems, including: • Insulin sensitivity and diabetes • Weight gain and obesity • High blood pressure • Heart disease and stroke • Lowered immune function/increased infections eg colds, flu • Mood swings, anxiety, fatigue and depression Melatonin is the ‘sleep’ hormone and production is delayed by staying up into the night. Melatonin lulls us off to sleep, reduces oestrogen levels and increases our antioxidant status. Reduced levels can increase the risk of some cancers, including oestrogen-dependant ones. Leptin and Ghrelin are 2 hormones affected by sleep, and control our hunger and satiety. Studies have shown that when a person gets less than 6hrs sleep, ghrelin (the hunger hormone) is sky high when we wake and we think about food all day, especially carbohydrates! So here are some tips for a better nights sleep‌ • Get at least 8-9 hrs sleep per night • Go to bed by 10pm - the sleep before midnight is most valuable for healing • Avoid the ‘blue light’ of phones, tablets and computers 2 hrs before bed • DO NOT have your phones or computers on in the bedroom! • Make sure the room is dark and at a comfortable temperature • Avoid caffeine at night and enjoy a herbal tea eg chamomile, ‘sleepy-time’ If you make these simple changes, SLEEP will reward you with better health. Sweet dreams!

Warradale Men’s Shed Men’s Sheds across Australia continue to grow in numbers each week and we now have 250 just in New South Wales! Our lads are still busy repairing, building and restoring all manner of goods and these we have for sale each week. So if you are looking for a bargain, this is the place to be, and we do have some very good ones! Each week we have different specials. Our members come from far afield and any man (over the age of 18) is most welcome to come along and join in the activities. No skills are required but we are always on the lookout for any blokes with special qualifications. Every month we have a tasty large barbecue and often welcome the chaps from other local sheds to come and join in the fun, have a chat and swap some good ideas. Recently we were pleased to see the lads from Tharawal Aboriginal Shed near Thirlmere – they cook some smashing sausages – crocodile and kangaroo which just melt in your mouth. A monthly visit by our own barber is another welcome asset – a quick haircut on a Friday and you could be out on Saturday night making whoopee. Anybody interested in joining the Shed should contact one of the numbers below – our age group is very similar, so we all speak the same language. Yes, feet, inches and miles still come up in our conversations – maybe not so much with the pounds, shillings and pence! So if you are interested in our Shed please ring one of these members. MONEY MATTERS PARENTS CORNER With David & Leonie Jackson – Great Aussie Dream P: 4733 8592 E: admin@gad.com.au

Vegemite Sandwiches Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you know that the property market is hot right now and the right home can be hard to come by. The tendency in this type of market is to get caught up in the fervour and over extend your finances. When purchasing property, level heads are required because paying more than you can afford for your dream home can be disastrous. First time buyers without the experience of living with a mortgage are particularly susceptible to this trap. Over the years I have developed what we jokingly call in the office my “vegemite sandwich” talk during which I sit down with my clients, discuss their goals and objectives, work though the numbers to see what is affordable for them (not just what they can borrow), and put a plan in place to achieve them. And that’s where the vegemite sandwiches come in. You see, sometimes my clients may not be ready to purchase straight away and often don’t know how to fix that. Most of the time it comes down to savings; because saving money can be hard unless you have the right mindset and focus on your goal. Taking a vegemite sandwich to work instead of buying lunch will save you about $1,500 in six months. Skipping that Barista made coffee, another $600. Dinner at home rather than the Restaurant, $2,600. You get the idea. Regardless of the position my clients are in, I always recommend saving more and borrowing less; because for every $1 more you save is $3 less you have to repay. Think of it like this; it’s not a sacrifice but an investment. You’re not paying the price, you’re reaping the rewards. Who knew that vegemite sandwiches could be so valuable?
