New Coworking Space To Open Soon In Restored Picton Post Office As Council Partners With Worklife

Wollondilly Shire Council has awarded the contract for a coworking space in the recently restored Picton Post Office building to WorkLife, a leading operator of regional coworking spaces.

The appointment followed a competitive process that attracted multiple proposals from local and regional businesses.

The Picton Post Office, built in the late 19th century, has been a symbolic landmark in the area for generations. Following significant damage due to floods and age, the building was restored with the help of the Federal Government’s Building Better Regions Fund and the State Government’s Bushfire Local Economic Recovery Package.

Mayor Matt Gould said, “It is fantastic to see the old Post Office restored and ready for this new phase of its life. With WorkLife coming on board as the successful operator, the site will soon be open to meet the flexible workspace and business networking needs of the local community.”

“The decision to repurpose the Picton Post Office as a coworking space is a strategic priority for Council. By supporting the development of coworking spaces, The Shire will attract and retain talent, create new jobs, and stimulate economic activity.”

“I’m very much looking forward to WorkLife Picton opening, expected in July 2023.”

The benefits of coworking are significant, providing an affordable and flexible alternative to traditional office spaces, lowering the risks of establishing a business and making it easier for businesses and entrepreneurs to establish a professional presence and collaborate with others.

Coworking spaces also help to address issues of social isolation, which have risen significantly with the rise of remote work.

Founder of WorkLife, Kate Dezarnaulds said that at its heart sustainability, sharing resources and knowledge are the key factors driving this new way of doing business.

“Sitting down next to someone with a completely different skill set at WorkLife is ensuring my work life contributes to me living my best life. It offers untapped sources of ideas and networks.”

“It has opened my eyes to some amazing people in our regional communities and built connections in a way I never expected.”

“We are thrilled to have been awarded the contract for the Picton Post Office building. We believe that coworking is an essential component of economic infrastructure in regional areas, and we are committed to working closely with the local community to deliver a space that meets their needs and supports their aspirations,” she said.

WorkLife Picton currently has space for four exclusive use office suite members, four single Office Pod members and 40 additional flexible memberships.

WorkLife memberships work like a monthly gym membership and are available from $65 - $180 a week. Office suites are available from $250 per week - $600 per week.

Local Author James Whitfield has just released his new book, titled ‘Wollondilly Scenes’.

Wollondilly Scenes is an amazing pictorial coverage of towns within Wollondilly Shire. The photos were captured by Whitfield, who is also a photographer.

It contains 210 pages, consisting of 17,000 words and 570 photographs. The photos are predominantly colour.

He recently held a book launch for Wollondilly Scenes at Wollondilly Library in Picton on Thursday 20th April. Guests at the launch were invited to The View Room at Wollondilly Library, where they were treated to hear James Whitfield discuss his work when putting the book together, followed by light refreshments and a book signing.

When creating the book, James was thrilled to be able to share some of his favourite photos in and around Wollondilly Shire and to promote the natural beauty of the area he has called home for many years. He was born in Picton in 1942 and has lived in Tahmoor since 1943.

“When taking photos in Wollondilly, what I enjoy the most is the promotion of the Shire. The self-satisfaction that someone may find peace and enjoyment from the images is rewarding” James said to the Mulgoa Valley Gazette.

So, what is James’ favourite place in Wollondilly to photograph?

“Anywhere in the Shire that presents an opportunity to bring an image to people who are unable to go to that location. A special place is the Bargo River at ‘The Potholes’” he shared. Wollondilly Scenes will be available to purchase from retail outlets soon. The cost will be $40 per copy.

You can also find some of James’ stunning photographic images on the local Facebook group, Wollondilly Snapshots.

He is currently busy working on not one, but two new books, which will be released in the future.

Happy 100th Birthday to Ted Stepniewski.

Some of you may remember seeing Ted from Allan Road in Mulgoa, walking around to the shops. He looked frail and always appreciated the many offers of help but was determined to be as independent as possible.

He has been in Newmarch House in Penrith for nearly 4 years and recently celebrated his 100th birthday. Ted is no longer mobile but is still very cheerful and loved seeing nearly all his family together again with his son and daughter in law, 5 of his 6 grandchildren with 4 of their partners and 8 of his 10 great grandchildren.

Ted was especially pleased to receive congratulations from King Charles and the RAF Air Marshal as well as the Governor General, the Prime Minister, and his Federal Member of Parliament.

Ted was born in 1923 in a village in Ukraine, now within Poland as the boundary changed after the war when Stalin, Roosevelt and Churchill divided up Europe. In 1940, Ted and his family were given 2 hours’ notice to pack their bags by the Russian secret Police and they were put on cattle trucks for a two week journey, which ended in Siberia.

The family had to endure forced labour and Ted eventually managed to join a Polish unit and went on a long dangerous journey through many countries, to eventually end up in England. He joined the RAF in Bomber Command as a navigator and flew many missions, often at night. The Polish Squadrons were recognised as a major factor in winning the war but the British Labour government, under pressure from Stalin, did not invite the Polish Armed Forces to the Victory Parade in London on 8 June 1946.

Ted moved to Mulgoa when he was 81 and has enjoyed his life in Australia.

Established in 1906 in Summer Hill, the Sydney Society of Model Engineers Inc. (SSME) is the oldest model engineering club in Australia and the oldest continuously operating Model Engineering Club in the World at 117 years old. In October 1971, the Society opened the Model Park at its current location in Luddenham.

Membership is currently well over 200 members, ranging from juniors to seniors, and is one of the largest clubs/societies of its type both within NSW and Australia.

The Model Park is home to a wide range of sections, each dedicated to a specific area of model engineering. These sections include large scale ride on trains, HO Gauge railways and smaller radio controlled garden railway trains, radio control boats, radio control aeroplanes, control line aeroplanes ¼ Scale speedway cars, 1/5 Scale off-road cars, stationary steam engines, tether cars, slot cars, and garden railways.

Each section is run by passionate and skilled volunteers who share their expertise with other members and organize various events and activities throughout the year.

They have public open days once a month (the last Sunday of each month). A typical open day attracts between 300 - 500 people, comprising of families on a big day out, people with an interest in all things modelling and various special interest groups.

“As the chairman of the board, I am proud to lead an organisation that has been at the forefront of model engineering and railway construction for over a century.

“Personally, I have been involved in the Society for most of my life and some of my fondest memories are of running around the flying field with my brothers and cousins, marvelling as my father and the other members worked tirelessly to develop and prepare the model park. It was here that my love for modelling was born, and with it, a lifelong passion for flying” said David Kennedy, President, and Chairman of Sydney Society of Model Engineers Inc. (SSME).

At SSME, they believe that model engineering is more than just a hobby; it is a way of life.

“Whether you are a seasoned veteran or just starting out, you will find a welcoming and supportive community at SSME” he said. Memberships are always open for the Society, whether your interest or passion is in model cars, planes, or trains. For more information on membership visit the website (www.ssme.org.au or www.modelpark.org.au) or contact membership@ssme.org.au.

How to Tell the Difference between Bullying and Fighting

Do you know the difference between bullying and fighting? Researchers have found that many parents struggle to know when it’s bullying or just everyday quarrels between friends, classmates, or siblings. This article will help you learn more.

Children learn important social and emotional skills when they navigate differences with others. Depending on a child’s level of skill and their emotional state, these clashes can often be resolved with minimal to no adult intervention. Bullying, in contrast, is not a ‘rite of passage’ or part of an ordinary childhood. Enduring experiences of being bullied or bullying eithers can severely compromise a child or young person’s social, emotional, and physical development, therefore serious and proactive adult intervention is always required.

Not all mean behaviours are bullying. Pushing, kicking, name calling, starting rumours, or excluding can be extremely distressing, but none are bullying in isolation. Bullying is not a single incident, but rather a pattern of behaviours repeated over time. Bullies often progressively use a combination of verbal, physical, social, and/or online strategies to hurt a victim.

As children learn emotional and behavioural control, they can struggle to disagree respectfully with other children. Losing control and lashing out in the heat of the moment is not bullying. On the other hand, bullying is intentional; bullies make a conscious choice to harm a specific child.

Bullying is an abuse of power. Power can be physical (i.e., size, strength), psychological (i.e., intelligence, age/maturity), or social (i.e., popularity). Certainly, two children fighting can escalate to serious harm, but if both kids are on a reasonably equal footing this is not bullying. In those cases, both children may need to be separated and supported to develop emotion regulation or social skills.

So, next time you feel concerned about bullying – ask yourself three questions:

1. Is this a pattern? Is the behaviour repeated over time?

2. Does the bully intend to harm this specific victim?

3. Is there a power imbalance (physical, psychological, social) between the two children?

If you answer “yes” to all three, then you need to act. You can get further help and support from the BULLY Project by visiting thebullyproject.com.au/parents.

Ava’s Mission to Raise $10,000 for Charity

Wallacia student Ava Fowler has set an ambitious goal to raise $10,000 for charity and she is well on her way of achieving this.

The inspirational local is raising funds for Wigs 4 Kids, which is a part of Kids with Cancer Foundation. Wigs 4 Kids allows people to grow their hair and donate it to be used when making wigs for children, all whilst raising much needed funds for sick kids.

Ava has been growing her hair for the past two years and will have it cut this month, in aid of the charity.

“After two very long and painful years of growing her hair, we have agreed to set the date to cut Ava’s hair on the Saturday 20 May” said Luke Fowler, Ava’s father.

With the cost of $2,000 to produce one wig, Ava’s goal is to raise $10,000 to assist five children with wigs.

“At age 6, Ava first heard about donating hair through a YouTube clip and after some research, we managed to find the charity Wigs 4 Kids. Ava was moved by the incredible impact that a wig could make to a sick child’s quality of life and wanted to do something to help other children facing the struggles of illnesses and medications that cause hair loss” he explained.

“Since then, she has been determined to reach her goal of raising $10,000 in funds for the charity, which provides wigs free of charge to children affected by medical conditions such as Alopecia or cancer treatments. Drawing from her own experience watching her Grandmother go through the process of losing her hair and the mental effect it has had has provided Ava with the drive to deliver her goal” Luke added.

She is determined to reach her goal and help as many children as possible.

“We have already raised $2,000 of her goal and would like to help as many as we can. There are 1,000 children being diagnosed with a form of cancer per year in Australia and around 400,000 each year globally.

“Whilst Ava only has enough hair to create one wig, her mission is to raise $10,000 to provide 5 beautiful children with wigs. Yes, that is correct - it costs $2,000 to produce just 1 wig. Ava believes providing these wigs will enable these young kids to gain back some sense of normalcy and feel comfortable in their own skin once again” he replied.

The local community is welcome to get behind Ava and support her with her inspirational quest.

“Her passion and commitment have inspired many people around us, me included. Helping spread awareness about Ava’s mission would make a huge difference for these children who are fighting their own battles. Together we can make their lives a little better” ended Luke.

A Toxic Bouquet

With Mother’s Day coming up, many of us will be heading to the florist to buy our mum’s a colourful bouquet of flowers. Unfortunately, we often return home with flowers that may be toxic for our pets. Although many flowers and plants are mild-tomoderate in terms of toxicity and can cause “mild” symptoms like a gastrointestinal upset, when pets consume highly toxic plants it can be fatal — even if they only have a very small amount.

The following list contains six common flowers toxic to cats and dog

Lilies - Lilies (such as Peace Lily, Calla Lily, Easter Lily and Tiger Lily) are highly toxic and potentially fatal to cats. Some types are also toxic to dogs. Avoid having any plant from the lily family in or around the home. We need to be very mindful of theses flowers, and their pollen, as they may cause vomiting, diarrhoea, lack of appetite, stomach pain, depression, difficulty swallowing, kidney damage, kidney failure, multiple organ failure.

Daffodils - Daffodil ingestion can result in trouble swallowing, serious heart irregularities, and respiratory distress, so if you think your dog has eaten any part of the daffodil or bulbs, see veterinary treatment immediately. Skin exposure also causes symptoms, such as burning, rash, itching, and inflammation.

Carnations - When ingested, the carnation can cause gastrointestinal upset and exposure to skin may lead to dermatitis in your dog. ... While the exact toxin is unknown, it can cause toxicity symptoms such as skin irritation and diarrhoea in your dog if exposed to or ingested.

Chrysanthemums – These come in many different sizes, colours, and styles, but they are all toxic. ... The entire plant is poisonous and contains sesquiterpene lactones, pyrethrins, and several other toxic substances. All parts of the chrysanthemum plant are potentially harmful if ingested, especially the flower heads. Symptoms of toxicity include nausea, vomiting, rashes, increased salivation, diarrhoea and lack of coordination.

Tulips - All parts of a tulip plant are toxic to dogs, from root to leaf, stalk, and flower. The bulbs are especially poisonous because it has a higher concentration of the plant’s naturally occurring chemicals, including the toxic Tulipalin. Pets may experience drooling, vomiting and diarrhoea, heart problems and difficulty breathing as a result of tulip poisoning.

Ivy - any popular ivy plants, including English Ivy and Devil’s Ivy/Golden Pothos, have moderate toxicity to pets. Mouth and stomach irritation, excessive drooling, foaming at the mouth, swelling of the mouth, tongue and lips, vomiting, diarrhoea will occur if ingested.

If your pets’ chews, licks or ingests any of these toxic flowers or plants, please call Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital on 0247362720 and seek veterinary attention.

This month will see the Luddenham Progress Hall have its new air conditioning installed. The Progress Association received a New South Wales Government Community Building Partnership Grant at the end of last year. Thanks to Tanya Davies MP for securing the grant.

On the 5th of April, Luddenham lost water supply for around 9 hours. It is amazing how much you rely on running water, and it was due to a pipe burst at Wallacia Bridge.

This year’s Luddenham Easter Festival was another huge success, with thousands of fun seekers attending the four-day event. It saw more rides than previous years. The Festival also included a free circus, that was well received.

So, for the first time in a long while, Luddenham is in one state electorate - the new seat of Badgerys Creek. Here are the results of Luddenham Public School voting - Tanya Davies MP (Liberal) 384, Benjamin Green (One Nation) 55, Nick Best (Greens) 17, Garion Thain (ALP) 104, and Peter Cooper (Sustainable) 14. Total formal votes were 574, with 17 informal. Luddenham had 591 votes on the day. Congratulations to Tanya Davies MP on being elected as our Local State Member. Hopefully one day, Luddenham will also be in one council and one federal electorate.

The Luddenham Progress Association are seeking support to have the new NSW Planning Minister immediately approve the long overdue plan for Luddenham Village. They are writing to all the new Local Members, as well as to the new Planning Minister, asking for this matter to be resolved as a matter of urgency. It is crazy the proposal for Luddenham, as proposed by NSW State

Planning Department, endorsed by both Local Councils, and supported by Locals, has not yet been signed off by the Minister for Planning.

Well done to Western Sydney Airport, who have been holding Coffee Catch Ups in local coffee shops to meet with locals, shout a coffee and answer questions relating to the airport. It’s great to see that WSA Co have stepped up their Community Engagements again. Keep an eye out for the next catch up.

Tanya Davies MP Re-Elected

The election result was a challenging night for the NSW Liberal Party. I want to thank Dominic Perrottet for his vision, service, and leadership of our State both as Treasurer and Premier during the most challenging period of our time. I also want to thank his wife, Helen, and the family for all their support.

I also want to thank the people of Badgerys Creek for returning me to Parliament. I am humbled by this result and eager to continue to be the strong voice and advocate for Western Sydney.

The people of Western Sydney and NSW more broadly sent a clear message on election night that they want a Liberal Party that stands up for families, backs in our small businesses and governs with compassion.

Therefore, I have decided that I can offer the leadership and representation that the people of Western Sydney and NSW more broadly demand. Western Sydney is the engine room of the NSW economy, and it is critical that the Liberal Party has a spokesperson that can truly champion its people and their aspirations. The new Western Sydney Airport linking our region to the world, the emerging city of Bradfield and future prosperity of all depend on it.

Our Party must also lead with policies that serve families, individuals and supports small businesses. As the only Liberal left standing in Sydney with what looks to be an increase in support for me, I believe I can offer so much more to the NSW Parliamentary Liberal Party, and I will be seeking support from colleagues in the Party over the coming days and weeks for the deputy leadership.

I am committed to ensuring that the Liberal Party offers a clear choice between political parties and addresses the serious concerns of the people of Western Sydney and NSW more broadly. I am honoured to put my name forward for the deputy leadership of the NSW Liberal Party and I look forward to working hard to earn the trust and confidence of my colleagues and the people of NSW.

Mulgoa Road Jazz Band will be performing their style of Dixieland jazz, when they play at the Penrith Paceway this month.

The popular local jazz band will play at Penrith Paceway on Saturday 6th May, from 12:30pm. Entry to see the band is free. Come for lunch and a great afternoon of music!

Jazz at the Paceway is an exciting afternoon of jazz music that takes place on the first Saturday of every month, from 12:30pm till 4:00pm at Penrith Paceway.

The bands that play include Mulgoa Road Jazz Band and Penrith’s Bird Yard Big Band.

Mulgoa Road Jazz Band was formed by Dr Adrian Sheen in 1981. For over 40 years, they have played at many local venues, including several years as a regular band on the Nepean Belle.

The current members of the band include Mike Hallam on trumpet, Jack Wiard on clarinet, Dr Adrian Sheen on trombone, Janos Horvath on piano, Merv Sequeira on bass and Baz Kliche on drums.

Mulgoa Road Jazz Band play Dixieland jazz with music from the 1920’s to 1960’s, whilst Bird Yard Big Band plays a wide variety of jazz from the 1940’s onwards.

Dr Adrian Sheen believes it’s important to have live music in the local community.

“Live music is essential for a thriving community. It is a wonderful opportunity for people to mix and mingle while enjoying an afternoon out” he said to the Mulgoa Valley Gazette.

Dr Sheen, who has been a member of Mulgoa Jazz Band since it started, delights in the joy that jazz music creates for both the audience and band members.

“There are many styles of jazz, but Dixieland always has a great tune, and the musicians create a different performance every time. It is like art on the run!

“Big band jazz is powerful and exciting. 18 musicians playing together is an experience not to be a missed” Dr Sheen ended.

For more information about Mulgoa Road Jazz Band and Bird Yard Big Band, find them on Facebook.

Mum’s the Word: Ward Angels Bring Joy to Heroic Mums

In previous years, Ward Angels have been able to provide over $75,000 worth of gifts to women in The Children’s Hospital at Westmead, Sydney Children’s Hospital Randwick, Bear Cottage, Mount Druitt Hospital Paediatric Unit, Blacktown Hospital Paediatric Unit, John Hunter NICU, Campbelltown Hospital NICU and Nepean Hospital NICU.

This year, with the help of the community they are hoping to provide gifts to even more hospitals.

Zita Singh-Gosai spent last Mother’s Day in hospital with her precious newborn Samaya and sums up how it feels to spend Mother’s Day in hospital, when all your thoughts and focus are on your sick child.

“I’ve held my baby girl five times now since she was born. She’s been connected to tubes or in an incubator or just not able to be held for one reason or another since her birth so cuddles with Samaya are very special to me. Today was a hard day to celebrate for once.”

After receiving a Mother’s Day gift from Ward Angels last year, Zita sent a beautiful message of thanks. “Your gifts made my daynot just for the material things in them but the simple fact that it reminded me that other mums are going through the same or have experienced this before, that I’m not alone and that there are wonderful humans still out in the world doing what they can to make sure someone else has a smile on their face.”

“We may not be able to make their child better, but we can provide a gift that makes them feel loved and celebrated- that shows we see their struggle and strength. We want the mothers to feel the arms of the community around them this Mother’s Day” said Ward Angels founder Josie Dincel.

Ward Angels is asking individuals, organizations, businesses, and community groups to help with this worthwhile cause. The Ward Angels team have said “If it’s something you would like to receive as a Mother’s Day gift, then we would love to receive it as a donation!”

For more information about donating or volunteering, find them on Facebook or visit www.wardangels.org.au.

Could a Unique Probiotic Help Reduce Ulcerative Colitis Relapse ?

The gastrointestinal tract is a complex ecological environment. Every person has about 100 trillion bacteria, made up of 40,000 different species, living in their large intestine. This represents 10 times the total number of human body cells. 70% of these bacteria have never been cultured, and together they make up 50% of faecal volume.

We know that gut bacteria are involved in the development Ulcerative Colitis (UC) because both:

1. Antibiotics and,

2. Probiotics have some therapeutic efficacy in UC. Animal studies on Colitis have shown that changes occur in the:

1. relative densities (some bacteria are increased in numbers from normal, others decreased);

2. spatial distribution (some bacteria are now found in abnormal locations in the large bowel) of the dominant bacterial groups in the large intestine of animals, and that these changes precede the onset of Colitis. Unfortunately, the results of studies using probiotics in the treatment of Ulcerative Colitis have generally been somewhat inconsistent. For those in which probiotics showed positive effects, results were only modest. This may be because of the:

1. variable actions of the different probiotic species tested,

2. limitations of most probiotic preparations, i.e.:

a. they ‘provide a comparatively low numbers and diversity of bacterial species in comparison with the vast human gut microbiota’.

b. strains used may not be able to compete effectively against microbial community currently resident in the gut due to the complex interrelationships ready established between these adapted, indigenous microbes.

In 2004 however, researchers in Germany tested the probiotic E. coli Nissle 1917 in Ulcerative Colitis patients (Kruis et al 2004). 327 patients were given either E. coli Nissle 1917 probiotic 200 mg once daily, mesalazine 500 mg three times daily, or placebo for 12 months. Researchers then assessed patient response to each intervention via clinical and endoscopic activity indices and histology (looking at bowel tissue under a microscope). They found that:

1. 64% of patients on E.coli Nissle 1917 and

2. 66% of patients on mesalazine remained in remission at the end of the study. Study authors concluded that the probiotic E. coli Nissle 1917, was as effective as the gold standard drug mesalazine at maintaining remission in patients with Ulcerative Colitis.

FAITH – GRACE WEST ANGLICAN CHURCH

Article Written + Submitted by: Senior Minister Christopher Braga

P: 47331635 A: 2265 Silverdale Rd, Silverdale NSW 2752 W: www.gracewest.church Service Times: Sundays @ 9.30am

On Monday 3rd April at 11.00am, approximately four hundred people gathered at St Thomas’ Church, Mulgoa to say their final goodbyes to Margaret Fowler, wife of Ross and mother to John, Alison and Gordon. Margaret had been a long-standing member of St Thomas’ Church, serving there in numerous capacities. In December 2021 she became part of the new community of Grace West Anglican Church, Silverdale.

I had the privilege to speak at her funeral. The closing part of my message went like this:

“The eyes of faith set themselves not on what is seen today - death, but they listen to the promise of God and trust him. They look forward to the day when we are reunited with Margaret. What you see around you is wasting away, but what God promises is eternal: real life with him and his people, forever. Remember what Jesus said to Martha before he called Lazarus out of his grave. He spoke a word of promise. A word that can be trusted. “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?” Martha replied, Yes, Lord.” (John 11:25-27)

What about you? Do you believe that Jesus is the resurrection and the life? Do you believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, who had come into the world? How do you respond to Jesus? When asked that same question, Margaret (Fowler) replied, ‘Yes, Lord.’”

Zonta Club of Nepean Valley’s Celebrates 30th Birthday

The Zonta Club of Nepean Valley celebrated it’s 30th birthday last month, on the 4th of April. Zonta has been around for over 100 years “building a better world for women and girls”. The Nepean Valley branch has certainly done a lot in working towards this goal. This has included making 2,500 breast cushions to 19,000 birthing kits, awards for female students in STEM, performing arts, public service, TAFE, university, and donating funds. Funds such as approximately $450,000 and goods to services like the Women’s Health Centre, The Haven, Kairos, and The Miranda Project. These unsung heroes deserved a night of fun to celebrate their achievements with family, friends, and past members.

In attendance was Karen McKeown MP (Member for Penrith), Penrith Councillors, President Angela Pezzano, Zonta District 24 Area 2 Director Helen Grimson, past and present members, Honorary Zontians, representatives of Lions Club Cambridge ParkPresident and Past District Governor Derek Margerison and Charles Armstrong, President of Penrith Rotary Joh Dickens, Zonta Nepean Valley Festival of Art and Design - Michael Powe (Sponsor) and Johnny Romeo (Patron), representatives from Kairos, Miranda Project, Penrith Women’s Health Centre, Cloverfield and past Zonta Nepean Valley student scholarship recipients.

Certificates were awarded to members who have been in the club for 10, 20 and 30 years and a slide show ran all night showcasing highlights from the club’s thirty year history. The theme of green and pearls for the 30th anniversaries was clear in the room’s fashion choices, and adorning the walls were images of women the Zonta members admired. There was also a guessing competition of the members when they were 30.

President Angela Pezzano said, “These women are the most admirable, humble, generous, and kind human beings you’ll ever meet. They truly deserved a night in celebrating the gifts that they are, and those that they give to women and girls, locally, nationally, and internationally.”

Managing Hard Skin

Callus and corns are the main types of hard skin we treat.

Callus

When a persistent pressure or friction is applied to your skin, the body’s normal response is often to thicken (form callus) to protect it. If left to build up, the hard skin can become painful or crack. There are some genetic conditions that lead to excessive amounts of callus, eg. palmoplantar keratoderma.

Corns

When the pressure on the skin is very high, the callus becomes dense and a localised lesion (corn) forms. Soft corns can occur between your toes and are acutely painful. What can you do?*

1) Reduce pressure

Identifying the source of pressure (eg. tight footwear, certain activities, toe deformities) and reducing it is the best way to manage callus and corns.

2) Moisturise

Certain creams such as urea-containing heel balm can help soften callus and improve skin quality.

3) Nix the corn pads

These can be unsafe and can result in infections in certain patients, particularly those with diabetes or peripheral vascular disease.

4) Pumice stones

Regularly soaking feet and rubbing off hard skin with a pumice stone is a great way to self-manage hard skin. Beware of salons with shared equipment and poor sterilisation procedures (using boiling water isn’t enough!), as the risk of infection is high.

5) See your podiatrist

Podiatrists can easily remove callus and corns using a scalpel. They are highly skilled in removing a safe amount of callus, as well as identifying and treating other issues such as blood within the callus, wart viruses or ulceration.

Treatment can provide immediate relief, however, this might be temporary if the cause of the pressure is not addressed. Your podiatrist can assess your foot shape, biomechanics, footwear and skin conditions. Footwear changes, offloading the area with padding, custom-made silicone devices and foot orthoses are often used to reduce pressure and corn formation.

In some cases, referral on to a podiatric surgeon can be made if it is found that the underlying cause is a bone or toe deformity and is not responding to conservative care.

FOOD 4 THOUGHT

Brooks

3989 Lakeside Parade, Jordan springs 2747

This month, Michelle and I were excited to visit Brooks for lunch and we were not disappointed.

When we entered Brooks, we were greeted by Bec, who really looked after us. After ordering a drink, we chose a booth and studied the menu. I found the booth to be very spacious, comfortable with a round table and plenty of room to spread out. Having a large table gives you plenty of room for your food and drinks and from Michelle’s description, you can look outside and appreciate the bushland and wonderful view.

The atmosphere was pleasant, and the music selection was amazing. We were keen to try the Fried Calamari. The calamari consisted of calamari, rocket, lemon, and aioli. This option was Dairy Free and Gluten Free. It was pleasing to see many options on the menu catered for those with dietary requirements and other allergies. The menu options were Gluten Free and Dairy Free and there were also Vegan options.

The calamari was crisp, full of flavour and delicious. I enjoyed the texture of the calamari along with the spicy flavour and the different shapes of each piece of calamari. The aioli added extra flavour to this exceptional dish, and I would choose this option again in the future.

We were also wanting to try the Chilli Prawn Pizza. This pizza consisted of chilli prawns, red onion, cherry tomatoes, and rocket. Every bite of this pizza filled your mouth with amazing flavours, and I particularly loved the chilli prawns and the onion. The base could be folded in half and doing so kept the ingredients on the pizza and this was like eating a sandwich.

To complete our lunch, we ordered some Ricotta Doughnuts. These doughnuts were amazing and flavourful.

I highly recommend Brooks Jordan Springs. I give them a ten out of ten. The customer service was outstanding, and I look forward to visiting again in the future. Brooks has something for everyone, and I thank Bec for looking after us.

Beware the Wombats!

#foodie#extraordinaire#reviewer

Warragamba Wombats JRLFC have hit the ground running and are looking to have their biggest season yet this year.

The junior rugby league club have bolstered their player numbers in 2023, which has seen 103 players registered and is up from 77 in 2022.

Last season saw a successful return to finals footy for the Wombats, something that had eluded the local competition for the past two years due to the pandemic.

There were many highlights from a year where players and teams enjoyed a full season on the field that was not interrupted.

“Our Under 11’s made it to the grand final, which was great to see, as well as the Under 16’s making it to the semi-finals. We were able to play finals last year, which hasn’t happened for 2 years due to COVID” explained Allison McMurray, Secretary of Warragamba Wombats JRLFC.

“We also hosted an end of season presentation day, which we haven’t been able to do for 2 seasons due to COVID rules. The day was a huge success. We had multiple players represent the club at a representative level and in the Summer and Winter Development Competitions through Wests Tigers” she continued.

Allison and the Committee at Warragamba Wombats JRLFC have worked hard in the off season, making sure that the club is prepared well for the year ahead.

The club are looking forward to a great 2023 season.

“We are looking forward to seeing the kids out there playing football. With numbers growing, this is definitely a positive for the club. This year, we have 2 girls league tag teams, which is fantastic for the club. We also have 2 Under 6’s and 2 Under 7’s sides and has doubled from last year” Allison said.

Despite the season already kicking off, there are still some vacancies in teams.

“We are always looking for players. In particular this year, we are looking for players turning 5, 6, 7 and 9” she stated.

The Committee would like to thank the local community for their continued support in getting behind the Wombats.

“We have been working with the Council on proposals to have some of our facilities updated, which are long overdue. Thank you to all our sponsors for giving the children the opportunity to play. Without them, this wouldn’t be possible” Allison ended.

For any potential new players, visit the website www.profile. mysideline.com.au/register and email register.warragamba.jrl@ outlook.com.

Search Warragamba Wombats JRLFC on Facebook for updated information about the club.

As the year races by, we find ourselves in Term 2 of school; Easter has been and gone, with Mother’s Day just around the corner. In the blink of an eye, it will be the end of financial year and we’ll be donning our winter woollies!

Mother’s Day falls on the second Sunday in May.

For some, a day of celebration and admiration; for others, one filled with bittersweet memories of a much-loved mother taken too soon, while others desperately yearn to become a Mum.

Mother’s Day is special, but can be complicated for many. To my Mum, I miss you and wish we had just 5 minutes more. We have a jam-packed edition for you this month, with plenty of local stories and information to keep you well informed and ‘up-on’ the latest happenings in and around your community.

Make yourself a priority once in a while. It’s not selfish. It’s necessary and you deserve it!

Enjoy your Community News.
