The Luddenham Country Markets Are Here Formerly known as the Mulgoa Country Markets, the Luddenham Country Markets are here and are now held at Luddenham Showground fortnightly. The next markets in November for Spring will take place on Sunday 8th November from 10:00am to 2:00pm. With the recent redevelopment of Mulgoa Park by Penrith City Council, the move to Luddenham has seen the local markets occupy bigger premises, taking place every two weeks instead of quarterly. “We are excited that we have made the move to Luddenham Showground. Luddenham was a great option and the perfect location for Country Markets. There is more space and the opportunity to develop into a much bigger market. It will now be more frequent, being fortnightly instead of quarterly, which is what Mulgoa Country Market was” explained Monique Annetts from AMA Markets to the Mulgoa Valley Gazette. The move to Luddenham has seen 75 stalls take part, giving visitors more variety. Local small businesses and artisans make up the stalls and there’s sure to be something for everyone for any occasion. “Luddenham Country Markets has pony rides and amusements such as jumping castles and teacup rides. The Showground displays signage all month, so you’ll know when the markets are on and you’ll be able to plan your visits around this, which is a big plus. It still has the same look and feel of a country market” said Monique. With regards to COVID-19, the public’s wellbeing is the event organiser’s highest priority. There are comprehensive assessments, including temperature checks and QR reader guest registration check-ins, hand sanitizer stations and social distancing which is supervised by a COVID marshall. They will continue to monitor the situation closely as they receive regular updates from governing bodies. As the advice continues to develop, they will update their approach. For more information about the Luddenham Country Markets, you can find them on Facebook or visit the website www.amamarkets.com.au. You can also call on 1300 385838.
Here Comes PENRITH MONOPOLY The foot of the mountains is home to an abundance of iconic locations loved by locals, and now the region is being immortalised with its very own official PENRITH MONOPOLY board. From March, Penrith residents and visitors will be able to play the world’s most popular board game in a way that pays tribute to all things Penrith. From now until February, fans can voice which locations they would like to see featured on the board via the official PENRITH MONOPOLY Facebook page or by email. The edition will see locally themed squares replace Mayfair and Park Lane from the original London MONOPOLY board and include a customised ‘Community Chest’ and ‘Chance’ playing cards, making the entire game a truly Penrith experience. Winning Moves, manufacturers of the official Penrith version of MONOPOLY under license from Hasbro, say the game will be sold through exclusive local businesses. Dale Hackett, representative from Winning Moves and Penrith local said: “Finally, we have the privilege to bring this globally loved game to the city that I grew up in. We want to ensure that Penrith MONOPOLY is an accurate portrayal of what locals love about the city, so we would love for everyone to get on board and send us their recommendations of what they would like to see included. Anything and everything is up for consideration – from the Nepean River and Penrith Lakes, to Penrith Panthers and Westfields – so get involved! “This edition will be everything you love about the traditional board, adapted in a way that Penrith residents will enjoy for generations to come. There will also be opportunities in the coming months for schools and individuals alike to get involved in the creation of this game, so stay tuned for more exciting details” Dale adds. MONOPOLY first hit the shelves in 1935 – since then it has been played by more than 1 billion people. Today, it is played in 114 countries and enjoyed in over 47 different languages. The new MONOPOLY: Penrith Edition will be available from March from select local businesses across the region. r What locations will feature on PENRITH MONOPOLY? | Image/Article: Winning Moves. Pastor’s Corner I read a story about a young woman named Susan who was blind. Susan hated being blind and she hated her life and seemingly everyone around her. More importantly Susan even hated herself because of her disability. There was one person, and one only who she loved, her boyfriend David. Susan often said if only I could see, I would marry you David. One day she receives the great news that a transplant is available. The doctor’s assures her that her sight will be restored, Susan goes through surgery and her sight is restored. So straight after her operation, David asks her to marry him, But Susan is shocked to find that David is blind and so she refuses to marry him. David walks away from their relationship, broken hearted, tears in his eyes, life seems like it’s over, some months later David writes a letter to Susan, The letter says “Susan, take care of my eyes”. In Luke 10, Jesus tells the story of a man who is travelling from Jericho to Jerusalem and is attacked, beaten and left on the road to die. Two religious leaders, see him lying there, then proceed to cross the road, to avoid becoming involved. However, a Samaritan man, stops, bandages his wounds, loads him on his donkey, then takes him to an inn to rest and recover. The Samaritan pays the innkeeper for the cost of his care. For the Jewish religious leaders, who listened this story was confronting. The Jews hated the Samaritan’s, so any story that highlighted their willingness to be involved to help a stranger was offensive. So too, any suggestion that religious leaders would not help, was offensive. But there is a challenge there for us too, How often do you “cross the road”, rather than help someone in need? Would you help someone who was obviously different your culture? And do you consciously or even unconsciously make judgments about people that are different, even those with a disability? My prayer is for forgiveness from Jesus, for all those times that we “cross the road”, rather than be involved, with a strangers needs; and for those times that we make unfair judgments about others, who are different to us.

Happy 60th Birthday Warragamba Dam GLENMORE PARK | PENRITH
Marie Grima at your service
Last month marked the 60th anniversary of the opening of Warragamba Dam! Warragamba Dam was a major engineering feat of the mid20th Century and, to this day, remains a much-loved Sydney icon. Four thousand people watched the opening ceremony of the Dam on 14 October 1960. As part of the ceremony, NSW Premier, Hon. RJ Heffron, waved a dogman’s bat to the head tower of the 18 ton cableway to signal the unveiling and lifting of the drapes over the monument on the eastern end of the road across the dam wall. The location of the dam was first suggested in 1845. The deep narrow gorge of the Warragamba River, at the exit to Burragorang Valley, was identified as an ideal place for a dam by Polish explorer Count Paul Strzelecki. More than a century and many droughts later, work finally started in 1948 to build a reliable new water supply for Sydney’s growing population. It took 12 years and 1,800 workers to build the dam, which opened in 1960. It was such a major undertaking that a town was built next to the site to house the dam builders. Today, Warragamba Dam is Australia’s largest urban water supply dam. It stores around 80% of Sydney’s water. The dam is 142 metres high, with a total operating capacity of 2,027 gigalitres. The storage lake is four times the size of Sydney Harbour, with a catchment of 9,051 square kilometres. Permanent and temporary exhibitions are showcased in the impressive Warragamba Dam Visitor Centre, which perches on a rocky outcrop high above the dam wall. The centre’s Burragorang Room boasts sweeping views of the lake, children’s activities, and video presentations. Friendly visitor centre staff are available to answer your questions. For more information about Warragamba Dam, visit https:// www.waternsw.com.au/supply/visit/warragamba-dam.

Street Outreach Service Now in Warragamba
Local charity Shining Stars Foundation runs both homeless and community outreach programs across the area. With 11 services that span from Liverpool, Campbelltown, Camden, Wollondilly and Wollongong, they have recently added the Warragamba Silverdale Neighbourhood Centre at Warragamba on Fridays every fortnight from 6:00pm to 7:00pm. Shining Stars Foundation was formed four and a half years ago by Co-Founders Kylee Bentham and Lyn Townsend, after seeing a greater need to help the homeless and less fortunate. Both ladies run teams across their services and manage all aspects of the charity with volunteers. “Our service is the gap between survival and not a lot of the time. We find people needing help for different reasons. We have homeless people on the streets, families fleeing domestic violence situations, elderly struggling, people suffering from mental health, international university students and they all need different levels of support. Our meals services and emergency food hampers are making a massive difference in helping people” said Kylee Bentham, Co-Founder of Shining Stars Foundation to the Mulgoa Valley Gazette. The Foundation relies upon the generosity of the greater community through donations to fund the important service. “Having the local community help with donations and support enables us to provide our service to those homeless and less fortunate. We are grateful for all this” added Kylee. If you would like to get behind and support the Shining Stars Foundation, you can visit their website at www. shiningstarsfoundation.or.au or search ‘Shining Stars Foundation Street Outreach Service’ on Facebook. r Lyn and Kylee with Shining Stars Foundation Volunteers | Image: Kylee Bentham

Latest @ Luddenham by Wayne Willmington
The future of Luddenham is still being worked out, with the Progress Association trying to meet up with the Western Sydney Planning Partnership to discuss the promised consultation before the precinct plans are released. The precinct plans will spell out what the future has instore for Luddenham and all the Aerotropolis. Thanks to Penrith Council for the new play equipment and play area in Sales Park. The Council have been asked to investigate providing some outdoor gym equipment in the park as well. Also, three kangaroos were spotted at Sales Park last month. Kangaroos in Luddenham were never seen, but over the last few years more are being sighted around town. They appeared to be enjoying their play in the park. Luddenham Show Society is going to have food trucks at the Showground every second Saturday, starting from the 31st October then the 14th and 28th of November. The trucks will be selling between 5pm and 9pm. Sad news, with the passing of Luddenham’s longest living and most respected resident, Artie Willmington. Artie lived his almost 91 years in Luddenham and sadly passed away on the 1st of October. Artie - thanks for all the good that you have done. Rest in Peace. The Western Sydney International Airport Experience Centre in Eaton Road Luddenham is a must to check out and learn about the Airport. I do recommend that locals go along and have a look at the Airport taking shape. At the moment, the Experience Centre is open Monday to Thursday, 10am to 4pm excluding public holidays with free entry and numbers may be limited to COVID-19 restrictions. It’s great to see so many people using the new footpath
from Bringelly to Luddenham. Yes, it will be extended and will run from Penrith to Narellan along the Northern Road. The Luddenham Country Markets are still very successful. The November dates are the 8th and the 22nd. Luddenham Show will be held on the 6th and 7th March 2021. Anyone who would like to make any suggestions on what can implemented at the next Show can email secretary@ luddenhamshow.com.au. The Show Society have decided at this stage to still run the 117th Annual Show in line with COVID restrictions, that still may be in force. If you have an opinion on what Luddenham of the future should be like, please email your thoughts or views to willmingtons@bigpond.com.

Ready to Roar The pandemic may have stopped the Luddenham Lions Junior Rugby Union Club (JRUC) from launching in 2020, however the club has now set its sights on taking the field in 2021. With the option of a local home ground still up in the air, a callout has been made for someone with a private field who would be willing to help. This would be similar to TG Millner Field in Marsfield, home of Eastwood Rugby Club. “Just like the Kevin Costner film, Field of Dreams, we are wondering if there is a modern day rugby loving Ray Kinsella in the Luddenham area, as there is just no public green space available for rugby between Glenmore Park and Camden. Doze the crops, build a rugby park!” said Adam Fletcher, President of Penrith RSL JRUC who is spearheading the campaign for the Luddenham Lions JRUC. “In a nutshell, we need more kids playing rugby and there are very few options south of the M4” stated Adam. The Luddenham Lions JRUC would love to hear from locals that have a keen interest in rugby. They aim to raise the profile of the game and, in turn, the club in the area. They are also looking for small to large businesses that would like to partner and grow with the club. “We invite you to be part of the community” ended Adam. For more information about the Luddenham Lions JRUC, you can find them on Facebook at www.facebook.com/ lionsjruc or get in contact via email at lionsjruc@gmail.com.

Warragamba Silverdale Neighbourbood Centre (WSNC) are producing the 2021 Warragamba Silverdale Community Calendar, which will be available to purchase for $10 each later this month. This calendar will include a collection of photographs taken by residents, featuring Warragamba, Silverdale and the surrounding area. “This is the first time that the calendar has been made. The community support has been amazing, and we hope to continue to produce one every year going forward” said Lee Hodder of WSNC to the Mulgoa Valley Gazette. A photography competition, coordinated by WSNC, was held in October. This gave locals the chance to submit one of their photos to be featured in the calendar. The photos ranged from landmarks to wildlife, capturing images of what people think of when at home in Wollondilly Shire. The response from budding photographers was big, with over 50 entries from people of all ages entering the competition. It was then independently judged, with the winner’s photos to be used for the local project. A recent grant from Wollondilly Shire Council to WSNC was used to develop the calendars. They will be available to purchase from WSNC, located on Corner Weir Road and Fourteenth Street in Warragamba. Everyone that purchases a copy of the 2021 calendar will go into the draw to win a 2020 signed and framed Penrith Panthers NRL jersey, which will be given away in December. For more information, visit www.wsnc.org.au or find them on Facebook.

Vale Artie Willmington
Artie Willmington 14th October 1929 - 1st October 2020 On the 1st of October, Luddenham lost its longest living resident. A man that was respected by everyone in the community, Arthur Ernest Willmington. ‘Artie’ was born in Penrith and lived all his life in Luddenham. Growing up on the family farm and living in the Post Office residence, Artie was one of nine children. From the age of six, Artie started working on the farm. He would get up early before school to help milk the cows and would help after school. Artie loved to grow things and was a keen sportsman. He especially enjoyed cricket and tennis, as well as being a Panthers supporter from day one. He also followed the weather and was the go-to person to find the upcoming conditions. In the mid 1950’s, Artie started working at Edwards Bakery in Penrith where he meant Jean Edwards and they were married in 1957. They were happily married for 63 Years and Jean would often say “it’s not long enough”. Edwards Bakery, in later years, was sold to Fielders Bakery and Artie would go on to be one of their Supervisors. He loved the early starts. When Artie retired, he started growing roses. He would go around pruning resident’s roses, and using his secret solution, he would strike, pot, and then sell them with all the profits going to the NSW Cancer Council. Artie and wife Jean started the Luddenham Cuppa for Cancer. The NSW Cancer Council confirmed that their sales of roses and cuppas had raised a massive $406,955.80 for them! Artie was also a great community leader, spending 50 plus years on the executive committee of the Luddenham Progress Association. He was part of the Luddenham Uniting Church as well as being a member of the Luddenham Show Society. Early in September, Artie was diagnosed with bladder cancer and went in for surgery to have it removed. He came home and on the 1st of October r Feature Article: [Cover] Artie with his beloved roses [Above] (L-R) Ben and Artie Willmington out the front of Luddenham and was taken back to hospital shortly as he was having trouble breathing. Listening Can Be Difficult For Kids
It seems like the kids don’t listen or do as they are asked. Sometimes we as adults need to be clearer in our communication. Calm is also handy, as the calmer we are, the calmer our kids are. Parenting Strategies That Tend Not To Work... • When we focus on telling our kids ‘don’t’, ‘stop’, ‘no’, ‘quit’, and ‘not’, sometimes they disregard the ‘don’t’ etc. Or, sometimes, the ‘don’t’ can be like a dare. • Telling the child what not to do, for example, ‘don’t jump on the lounge’, ‘don’t hit your brother’. • Yelling across the room. • Yelling, hitting, name calling, put-downs. • Asking a question if you want the child to do something, for example, ‘would you...?’, ‘can you…?’, ‘do you…?’, ‘will you…?’ Your Challenge Use clear calm instructions to give kids instructions and encourage them to listen: • Say child’s name, get close, get eye contact, touch child gently; • Tell the child what to do OR • Tell the child what s/he is doing wrong and what to do instead. REMEMBER to say ‘thanks for listening’ or ‘thanks for doing as I asked’. If the child does not do as asked after two requests, issue a Consequence. It is often a good idea to give the child a calming down skill in your Clear, Calm Instruction. Example “you are shouting at me, (pause) take a deep breath and think about how you can speak to me in a calm way and with respect”. Wait calmly and quietly for the child’s response. When the child has spoken with you calmly, say “thank you for being calm and respectful”. Parents often say that this strategy is very simple but the hardest thing for them is to be calm. Your high emotional reaction is related to your values. Values are essential to guide your life, but are you going to coach/guide your child in values or force them down their throat? You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar. To calm yourself take some deep breaths, and think of a happy memory (for example, a time when the child was cute or loving, etc). The aim in any parenting strategy is to teach your child how to be better, and parents have to role model that. r

Wallacia man Roger French, completed his 46th City2Surf run last month, although it was a little different from his usual experience of running in the iconic race. Roger, who turned 80 in August, was one of the runners in the first City2Surf in 1971. He continued to participate almost every year, where he regards the race as his annual fitness test and only missed races twice when he was overseas, once when he was injured and once when he had a cold. Roger has none of the health issues usually associated with elderly people. He is the Health Director of the Natural Health Society of Australia, a not for profit organization, which this year is celebrating its 60th Anniversary. The Society teaches people how to be healthy through a lifestyle program which entails eating a wholefood plant-based diet, regular exercise, rest and relaxation, fresh air, sunshine, pure water, avoiding harmful chemicals and having a positive attitude to life. Because of COVID restrictions, the usual City2Surf with about 80,000 entrants was cancelled. Instead, entrants were able to download an app to their phones which tracked their progress as they ran around a 14km course of their choice. Roger chose to do a couple of circuits of the bridge to bridge river walk in Penrith and Emu Plains, along with many other local people. His finishing time was a very creditable 111 minutes and 52 seconds with a preliminary placing of 4th out of the 29 runners over 80 who finished. Having reached this significant milestone in his life, Roger has no intention of hanging up his running shoes and will be lining up again next year for the City2Surf in whatever form it may take. r

Mulgoa Art Trail 2020 The Mulgoa Art Trail is on again! Former member Malle Morley has moved from Mulgoa and we have now been joined by Shirley Ayers, whose studio is on Mulgoa Road just before Wallacia. Visitors can meet the artists in their studios and peruse the wonderful art works on display. Why not make a day of it with lunch or afternoon tea at a local café, explore Fernhill, or take a walk to the Rock Lookout or Riley’s Mountain? The four artists taking part: Di Watson (74 Fairlight Rd) specialises in landscapes, weddings, and portrait photography. Wander through Di’s rustic, country studio where Di now hosts small, intimate wedding ceremonies. All visitors will receive a gift voucher for a family portrait session. Browse her artwork and help contribute to the farmers in drought by purchasing a “Need for Feed Disaster Relief” calendar which features Di’s beautiful photography. www.diwatsonphotography.com.au Shirley Peters (185 Park River Close) paints expressive landscapes and Le Tour de France cyclists. She has appeared on SBS National TV and the “Colour in Your Life” TV series. Penrith Small Business Awards 2020
Unfortunately we did not win the Penrith Small Business Awards 2020. We were so happy to be nominated and have our clients support us. Thank you so much for voting for us, we truly appreciate your support. Due to the Coronavirus crisis, the Awards dinner had limited seating numbers and we were unable to get enough tickets for all of our staff. So, we organized a dinner out with all of the staff and their partners at a local restaurant, so the whole team could enjoy a night out together. HEALTH MATTERS
Article Written + Submitted by: Andreas Klein Nutritionist + Remedial Therapist from Beautiful Health + Wellness P: 0418 166 269
Why Vegans and Vegetarians are more at Risk of Zinc and other Deficiencies?
The adequacy of all dietary patterns, omnivorous, vegetarian or vegan, depends on nutrient content of foods in the diet and the human gastrointestinal tract’s ability to extract those nutrients (including zinc). Several elements, termed ‘anti-nutrients’, found specifically within plant foods e.g.: 1. seeds (nuts/grains/pulses) 2. tubers, 3. but not generally in animal foods, significantly reduce nutrient digest/absorbability; can damage the gastrointestinal tract. This can increase vegans/vegetarian’s risk of zinc & other nutrient deficiencies, and ill-health. Such substances include: • Phytates in seeds, grains and legumes significantly reduce mineral absorption including iron, zinc, magnesium, calcium. • Tannins are a class of polyphenol-antioxidants in tea, coffee, and cocoa precipitate proteins, inhibit digestive enzymes, affect absorption of vitamins, minerals - especially iron. • Lectins: found in all food plants, especially seeds, legumes and grains, survive digestion and damage gut lining cells, interfere with nutrient digestion and absorption, change normal bacterial flora, affect gut immune state and systemically, disrupt lipid, carbohydrate and protein metabolism, promote enlargement and/or atrophy of key internal organs and tissues
and alter the hormonal and immunological status. Many lectins are both antinutritive and/or toxic substances and are harmful in high amounts. • Protease inhibitors (PI’s): are small proteins, found mainly in plant storage tissues i.e. seeds (nuts/grains/pulses) & tubers (potatoes, sweet potatoes etc) that inhibit protein digestive enzymes (stomach & small intestine) and can represent up to 10% of total protein of some plant foods. • Calcium Oxalate is the primary form of calcium in many vegetables, eg spinach. Just 10% of calcium in spinach is absorbed, 40% from milk. Oxalate doesn’t hinder zinc absorption. A poorly constructed vegetarian/vegan diet with high levels of all of these antinutritive compounds, can easily lead to various nutrient deficiencies & ill health – including poor cartilage. Omnivores aren’t immune, getting 50-70% of calories from plant foods with the same antinutritive compounds hindering absorption of nutrients from their animal foods. Typical omnivores may eat (high tannin) coffee, (high-phytate/ lectin/PI) toast or cereal for breakfast; meat & salad surrounded by (high-phytate/lectin/PI) sandwich bread for lunch; pizza (low nutrient high high-phytate/lectin/PI white flour dough) for dinner. Easy-to-see how their health might suffer. Next month - ways to remove anti-nutritives from vegan foods.

We are at the pointy end of the year. Historically, November is the nose dive into all the upcoming Christmas festivities. This year has definitely been a challenging one, and it is without doubt that the Christmas Season will carry with it significant impacts marking the year that was. It’s important we try to come together and consolidate the bumpy journey’s we have all experienced in one way or another and celebrate that we made it through, that we’re here to tell the stories. There are plenty of great new things happening in and across our community, despite the impacts of COVID through the rubble, beautiful things are beginning to blossom. We have plenty of great reading this month, why not find yourself a nice spot in the garden with a cuppa and your favourite local paper? ‘The happiest people in life are the givers, not the getters’ Enjoy Your Community News.
