Nikki’s Fight Against MS Silverdale mother of two, Nikki Tatum, is suffering from the debilitating and unforgiving disease, Multiple Sclerosis. In recent times her symptoms have worsened and relapses are becoming more frequent. Lesions have developed on her spine and she has been informed by her neurologist that she is a likely candidate for a walking cane or wheelchair in the future. Little is known about what sparks rapid MS progression. One can go many years without experiencing any symptoms to finding themselves in a wheelchair in the space of a few months. This is a very frightening prospect for the young mother. Determined not to let the disease beat her, Nikki has researched treatment options. Those currently available in Australia have horrific side effects and only act to slow down the progression of her MS, best case scenario. Her search for an answer has led her to Hematopoeitic Stem Cell Transplant (HSCT) treatment in Russia. Australia’s Top Newborn Photographer Announced Wallacia photographer, Natalie Howe, has pocketed the title of Australia’s top professional newborn photographer for 2016. More than 450 of the country’s best professional photographers gathered in Melbourne last night for the Australian Professional Photography Awards (APPA) presented at a gala dinner at the Pullman Albert Park hotel. The APPAs are the largest awards for professional print photography in Australia and one of the largest in the world. It is the only professional photography awards in the country that require physical prints to be submitted for judging. The Australian Institute of Professional Photography (AIPP) – the country’s largest photographic membership body – has been running the awards annually for the past 40 years. This year marks its 40th year anniversary. “The awards represent the best of the best of professional photography in Australia, said the national president of the AIPP, Vittorio Natoli. “To be able to enter, photographers must meet the AIPP’s required standard, which has been further lifted this year, he said. To be eligible for the title of Australia’s Professional Photographer of the Year, photographers must first win a category. A panel of experts then further anonymously assesses all category winners’ work to determine the overall winner. Innovation, content, creativity, technical excellence and impact are the key criteria when the images are reassessed. More than 580 entrants submitted a collective of almost 2,200 images to be judged as part of the AIPP APPAs. The 2016 awards were peer-judged anonymously over three days by some of Australia’s most recognised photographers including Jerry Ghionis, Peter Eastway, Peter Rossi and Charmaine Heyer. In 2015, the AIPP’s accreditation standards were awarded landmark certification from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), which will allow its members to benefit from the first official certification status for accredited professional photographers.

FAITH – ANGLICAN PARISH OF MULGOA

Spring Is In The Air Spring is in the air! Isn’t it great? Winter morning chill gone. No more ice on the windscreen as you head off to work! Spring is a great time to get outside and do some gardening – to clear out winter weeds, plant new plants and even grow your own veggies. How good are home grown tomatoes! In the Bible’s book of Mark, Jesus tells a story about gardening. He tells of a farmer who planted some seed. As the farmer scattered the seed, some fell on a path where it was eaten by the birds. Other seed fell on rocky places, but, because the soil was shallow, the plants withered and died. Some fell among weeds and thorn bushes, which strangled the plants as they tried to grow. Finally, seed also fell on good soil. Here it grew and produced a great crop. Jesus told this story to challenge people to think about his message of life, hope and forgiveness. Are you like the seed that fell on the path? Hearing Jesus’ message but not taking it seriously. Are you like the seed that fell on a rocky place? You heard Jesus’ message and thought it was great, but when tough times came, you gave it up. Perhaps you are the seed that fell among thorns. You heard and responded to Jesus’ message. You were going nicely until you were sucked away by busyness or the short-lived, shallow pleasures of this life that took you away from your relationship with God. It is so sad to see people who waste Jesus’ life giving message. Make sure you are like the seed that fell on good soil – hearing and responding to Jesus! Accepting it and making Jesus the centre of your life. Say “no” to the rocks, weeds and thorn bushes and don’t let them suck the life out of you. Keep making sure you are the good soil, growing and flourishing as you keep Jesus at the centre of your life. Would you like to know more? Give us a call on 4733 1635.

Our Local RFS Brigades Honoured

Last month, the Rotary Club of Wallacia-Mulgoa Valley sponsored an Emergency Services Awards Presentation to acknowledge and thank the fantastic work of these teams at the Wallacia Hotel. Penrith Mayor, Karen McKeown, initiated the proceedings, followed by NSW Rural Fire Service Commissioner, Shane Fitzsimmons, who was delighted to have the opportunity to meet many of the frontline firies from the local area. In return, brigade members had this rare and rewarding opportunity to meet their Fire Chief. Inspector Daniel Wiggins represented Supt Greg Peters from St. Mary’s LAC and addressed the group. A couple of local RFS districts were represented by Supt Martin Surrey (A/Manager Cumberland Zone) and Inspector Michael Markwort (Macarthur Zone).

The Emergency Services teams honoured were the Rural Fire Service brigades of Mulgoa, Wallacia, Luddenham and Silverdale. Each member of the brigade was presented with a Certificate of Appreciation and, on the nomination of each brigade, one member was presented with a trophy for having given outstanding service. The trophy winners were Ian Walther from Mulgoa RFS, Jody Preston from Wallacia RFS, Robert Sinclair from Luddenham RFS and Barbara Jolley from Silverdale RFS. Jan Bradley, President of Wallacia-Mulgoa Valley Rotary, thanked Wallacia Hotel for assisting with the hire of the function room and catering with abundance. Attending the evening were Rotary Club members of Wallacia-Mulgoa Valley and St. Mary’s, as well as the families of brigade members and local residents.

WARRAGAMBA BAPTIST CHURCH

Pastor’s Corner During October and into November, students are taking part in final examinations at High School, TAFE, College or University. For the students, they face the pressure of striving to perform at their best; and the uncertainty surrounding future employment, further studies or other options. Each of my three daughters completed their Higher School Certificate; and as parents, my wife and I, felt some of the pressures surrounding that time. We wanted them to succeed; and at times they needed to work harder; and at other times to relax and maintain a more balanced perspective. Sometimes, examinations, such as these are portrayed, as being the student’s only opportunity to succeed in life. But of course that is not true, it is an important opportunity, but life will open many others. In life, there are many people who will tell you that you can’t succeed, that failure awaits you; sometimes they are those that are closest to you. At times, you may have been gradually worn down, by their negative words; you may have started to believe them. I am grateful for those important people in my life, whose words of encouragement, have spurred me on to succeed, when otherwise I may have given up. Are you a person who encourages others? God’s Word says: “See it to, brothers, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God. But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called today; so that none of you may be hardened by sins deceitfulness.” (Hebrews 3:12-13). This passage speaks of the sin that grips all our lives, that turns us away from relationship with Jesus; Jesus came to set us free from sin. God is a God of encouragement; His word, calls on us to encourage others, each and every day. My prayer is that you will sense that Jesus came to free us from our sins; He wants to encourage you, to be everything that He created you to be. God Bless, Lyndon

The Ultimate Training Experience Burns Outdoor Obstacle Training, located in Bringelly, is the ultimate training experience for adults and children of any fitness level that is challenging, unique and fun. The business recently celebrated their first year anniversary late last month, after taking a total of nine months to be built. The activities that the facility offers include obstacle training for beginners (lessons in this class), kid’s obstacle training where all children aged 6+ are taken through the lesson on obstacles, boot camps for adults and teenagers, practice sessions for those experienced, family training sessions and school holidays for children. Burns Outdoor Obstacle Training also host birthday parties, charity events, sports team bonding sessions, and corporate functions. The costs are $30 per person for an adult’s obstacle training technique training session which is three hours and $20 for those who do not require the lesson, $20 per person for the children’s obstacle training session which is two hours and $12 for boot camps which are a one-hour class. When it comes to conquering the obstacles, Owners Wayne and Lorelai Burns have this advice; “Most obstacles require some practise with technique specific to each one. There are often a few different methods to completing an obstacle, often it’s about learning the different methods and seeing what you personally feel more comfortable with” said Lorelai. Wayne and Lorelai are both passionate about fitness and staying healthy; “We want to get more children and adults active. We want people to see that fitness can be fun and does not need to be a chore. We want to see more people come here and realise that these activities are what we often did as children and then were considered play. We would also like people to gain not only strength and fitness from attending here but also feel like they are part of a friendly community that is both inspiring and encouraging of one another” they explained. Burns Outdoor Obstacle Training is located at 25 Dwyer Road in Bringelly. Their phone number is 0430 536156. You can visit their website at www.boot. net.au.

PARENTS CORNER

Article Written + Submitted by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) Nepean Community + Neighbourhood Services P: 47218520 E: narelle@nepeancommunity.org.au FaceBook: Parenting in Penrith Blog: handsheartsminds.wordpress.com

Continuing Our Series on Parent Traps… Guest Article by Professor Matt Sanders It’s tough being a parent but it’s easy to fall into one of the common parenting traps. The criticism trap is when there are frequent power struggles with your child. The situations escalate from criticising to threatening and yelling. This type of discipline often backfires. The parent’s anger makes the child and parent resentful and hostile. If these kinds of battles take place frequently, its time to try a new way of handling the situation. The “leave them alone” trap involves the parent simply not acknowledging their child when they are behaving well. If good behaviour is taken for granted it may be replaced with the misbehaviour that receives more attention. A basic principle of positive parenting is to praise behaviours you would like to see more often. The “for the sake of the children” trap occurs when parents in unhappy marriages stick doggedly to the same marriage routines, for the sake of the children, rather than addressing the problems constructively. The perfect parent trap. There is no such thing as a perfect parent and trying to be one will only lead to disappointment, resentment, guilt, and feelings of inadequacy. The martyr trap is one where parents become so overinvolved in the task of parenting they neglect their own needs. The parents’ relationship suffers and may end in feelings of dissatisfaction and resentment. Quality parenting can only happen when adults have their own lives in balance. Parenting is sometimes hard work and it may take time to tackle difficult problems. The good news is that help is always at hand. In Penrith, parenting support is offered for free with Triple P, one of the world’s most highly-regarded parenting programs. Professor Matt Sanders is founder of the Triple P – Positive Parenting Program. For more information go to www.triplepparenting.net or http://www.resourcingparents.nsw.gov.au/.

and storing stem cells, blasting the body with chemo to kill off the faulty immune system, before reinfusing the stem cells and building a new immune system that is free from the disease. HSCT halts disease progression. Patients are left with the damage that has already been done, however symptoms will not worsen and the disease does not progress. For Nikki this would mean no more damaging relapses and no wheelchair! Family and friends are raising funds to help Nikki travel to Russia in January 2017 to have this life changing, potentially lifesaving treatment. The cost of the full program of treatment, including travel expenses, is the equivalent of AUD $80,000.00. They need to raise this money in a very short time span and are appealing to the community to donate to Nikki’s fund via the following link: www.chuffed.org/project/the-race-to-haltmy-multiple-sclerosis.

The time has come for your little ones to bring out there inner demons, dress up in their favourite ghoul costume and get sugar crazy with trick or treating and every year sees more and more participants coming together and getting into the spirit of this fun and crazy tradition. We celebrate Halloween every year on October 31st but do we really know where this originated from? According to History. com the holiday originally comes from people called the Celts. The Celts lived in Europe more than 2000 years ago. On November 1st they celebrated the end of summer. They thought ghosts visited the living on October 31st. They dressed up like ghosts so the spirits would not harm them. Halloween is a time of celebration and superstition. On Halloween, to keep ghosts away from their houses, people would place bowls of food outside their homes to appease the ghosts and prevent them from attempting to enter. Whether you are attending a local event to celebrate, having a party at home or with family and friends or simply taking your kid’s out for some trick or treating there are some great tips and idea’s on things you can do to get you in the Halloween spirit, but most of all this is also a time to be diligent and practise safety for all involved. Be mindful and respectful that not all people in Australia have taken on this ever growing tradition, here are some tips to make it a fun, safe and enjoyable time for everyone.  For those at home celebrating, decorate your front door with a pumpkin or a lantern to show you are participating, this lets trick or treaters know they are welcome.  Teach kids to demonstrate manners when taking treats, and to only take wrapped lollies and enough for themselves.  Decorate costumes and bags with reflective tape or stickers and, if possible, choose light colours and make sure it the right size to prevent trips and falls.  Choose face paint and makeup whenever possible instead of masks, which can obstruct a child’s vision.  Have kids carry glow sticks or flashlights to help them see and be seen by drivers.  Slow down and be especially alert in residential neighbourhoods. Children are excited on Halloween and may move in unpredictable ways.  Popular trick or treat times are between 5.30pm – 9.30pm. To see if your suburb has registered to celebrate Halloween, add your suburb, get ideas on costumes and much more visit www.halloween-australia.com Image | www.designbolts.com

Boron – The Little Known Mineral For Osteoporosis OK so let's have a look at an important mineral that is often overlooked when it comes to bone density and osteoporosis, (as well as osteoarthritis) namely ‘boron’. 1 in 3 women over 50 have osteoporosis compared to 1 in 5 men. Here’s 6 reasons why boron is important for both men & women with osteoporosis? 1. In women osteoporosis is attributed to reduced estrogen levels (roughly Âź of that in young women) after menopause. In postmenopausal women boron supplementation has been shown to markedly elevate serum estrogen & testosterone, even more when dietary magnesium is low. Estrogen is actually an anti-inflammatory hormone; this action helps suppress bone resorbing cells!! 2. In men osteoporosis is associated with low free ‘testosterone’. Boron supplementation significantly increases free testosterone in healthy men, which is converted to estrogen in men’s bones to provide similar bone building & antiinflammatory actions as in women. 3. Because boron positively influences oestradiol & testosterone levels, it stops the body losing calcium, magnesium, and (if magnesium is low) phosphorus through the urine. Boron also improves intestinal absorption of magnesium and deposition in bone. All these actions help maintain bone density as both magnesium and phosphate are important parts of bone mineral. 4. Boron supplementation has been shown to increase the body’s levels of both the storage and active form of vitamin D by slowing down the enzymes that degrade both these forms of vitamin D. Vitamin D is important for good calcium and magnesium absorption from food. 5. Boron supplementation (6mg daily) decreases multiple inflammation markers significantly, and increases activity of SOD a key antioxidant enzyme in blood. Osteoporosis is actually an inflammatory disease, a fact that is not much publicised in the popular media, so boron helps to slow this key driver. Boron is helpful for osteoarthritis for similar reasons. 6. Finally, boron helps significantly increase production of many vital proteins that build both bone & cartilage The best sources of boron are plant foods. Boron needs to be in the soil for plants to pick it up. Boron content in Australian soils is variable. Mallee soils have a very high content, but soils within the eastern-state sandstone and granite belt have little. Food boron is easily absorbed but also readily excreted so you need a constant supply. So what foods contain this great bone

building nutrient? The best food sources are avocados; followed by nuts and dried fruits e.g. prunes, raisins, dates, almonds, peanuts, hazelnuts and beans; while apples, peaches pears, grapes and broccoli, & plant derived fermented beverages i.e. wine cider & beers are also reasonable boron sources. The foods we often eat the most of, i.e. grains, dairy products, seafood & meats contain ď łď€ Images Supplied | High Boron Food Choices very little boron.

Fatal Motorcycle Crash Greendale, West Of Bringelly Police are investigating following a fatal motorcycle crash in Sydney’s west last month. About 6am Tuesday 13 September 2016, police and emergency services were called to Greendale Road, Greendale when a passer-by found a deceased motorcyclist in a paddock. Initial investigations suggest the rider died at the scene when the motorcycle left the road and hit a tree and a fence. A crime scene was established and police from Green Valley Local Area Command have commenced investigations into the incident. It would appear the rider may have been at the scene for sometime before being discovered. The man had not been formally identified (at the time of the report) and a report will be prepared for the Coroner. Police are appealing for any witnesses to the incident to come forward and contact Green Valley Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Police are urging anyone with information in relation to this incident to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or use the Crime Stoppers online reporting page: https://nsw.crimestoppers. com.au/ Information you provide will be treated in the strictest of confidence. Latest @ Luddenham by Wayne Willmington

Last month the Federal Government released the Final Environmental Impact Statement for the proposed Western Sydney Airport. The EIS is a comprehensive assessment of Stage 1 of the Airport, it is a result of more than 700 field studies, 19 technical reports and takes into account almost 5000 submissions received during the public exhibition period. The EIS examines potential impacts and sets out measures to reduce impacts on noise, air quality, transport, water quality, ecology as well as European & Indigenous heritage. So once the Environment Minister considers the EIS and places any conditions, if needed, for the development, it is expected that the Infrastructure Minister will determine the Airport Plan, which means that it will be underway. Most of Stage 1 of the Airport is in Luddenham.

The NSW Government is currently asking for feedback on Western Sydney Rail Needs, the Study is a joint initiative of the Australian and NSW Governments to determine the need, timing and service options for rail investment to support the growth of Western Sydney and the proposed Western Sydney Airport. You can find out more about this project, get a copy of the Discussion Paper and make a submission to the Study at westernsydneyrail.transport.nsw.gov.au & submissions are sought by 28 October 2016. I personally believe in Option 6: A North-South link: Macarthur-Western Sydney Airport site-St Marys-Schofields. This option would be best for Luddenham & I urge you to have your say. Also the Progress Association has received feedback from local residents concerned about the cost of their septic pump-out services. There are a few pump-out operators, each one charging their own uncontrolled fees. Most residents in Liverpool Council consider the fees excessive and would like to be on the same system as Penrith Council residents. During September I caught up with the Hon Angus Taylor MP the Assistant Minister for Cities and Digital Transformation, and our Local Federal Member. It was great to discuss some of our local issues. Angus is hopping to have a public meeting in Luddenham in November to give everyone an update on all the developments around town. Interesting that Luddenham is getting the NBN, last year there was no plan for NBN to come to Luddenham, but now the cables are in and it should not be long before it is turned on. If you have an opinion on what Luddenham of the future should be like please email your thoughts or views to willmingtons@ bigpond.com ď ˛ď€ Angus Taylor MP & Wayne Willmington | Image Supplied

National Veterinary Nurse’s Day On Friday 14th October 2016 we plan to celebrate National Veterinary Nurse’s Day at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital. It is great to acknowledge the hard work and efforts of our veterinary nurses. The nurses do a lot of work behind the scenes that you do not see or hear about. The nurses monitor the patients whilst under general anaesthetic, medicate animals whilst in hospital, answer enquiries, clean the hospital, and ensure the smooth running of the veterinary hospital. Without the veterinary nurses, we would not be able to do our job as a veterinarian. We plan to celebrate by having a long lunch with enough food to feed an army. We have 7 nurses at the hospital with Sheridan recently on maternity leave, and I hope you get to know them as you come and visit our hospital.

Renai Lewis – Practice Manager

Renai has grown up in the Penrith area and has seen many changes over the years. Renai joined the team in August 2014 where she was warmly welcomed by all. Renai has 2 furbabies including: Ally (Golden Labrador) and Cooper (a naughty young learning Labrador). Renai adores her pets and spends every spare minute with them, when she is not busy being a wife and mum to 4 adult children.

Kirsti Lane After 20 years of veterinary nursing, Kirsti went back to TAFE to update her qualifications. Kirsti graduated from Veterinary Nursing Certificate IV (again) in June 2016. Kirsti enjoyed the study and found that the basics had not changed, but technology had certainly advanced. Kirsti enjoys spending her time off with her daughter and husband (and her animals of course) camping, bushwalking and trying to keep fit! They have 3 dogs (Roxy, Rory and Crumbs), 2 cats (Ivory Grace and William Wallace), 3 fish, 2 birds and several hermit crabs!

Kristie Borg Kristie joined our team in April 2013. She has completed studies in certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing in 2011. Kristie is currently studying a Diploma in Veterinary Nursing (General Practice) through Crampton Consulting Group. Kristie's furry family includes: four dogs (including Myloh the Jack Russell, Pepi the Chihuahua and Reilly and Coco the Maltese Terriers), one medium haired cat named Missy, three birds (Mac, Peaches and Budgie), and four horses (Jordie, Lexie, Minnie and Bella). All of which she enjoys spending time with.

Rachel Kent Rachel graduated as a Veterinary Nurse in December 2012 at Richmond TAFE. She enjoys spending time with her friends and family when she is not at work. Rachel has a much loved Labrador Molly, and Jinx the cat. Rachel is currently studying the Certificate IV in Companion Animal Services at the Delta Institute, which is an animal behaviour and training course. Rachel began teaching the Puppy Preschool at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital in Dec 2015. Rachel is enjoying the study and

Lizzie Bunting Lizzie completed the Veterinary Nursing Certificate IV in July 2016. Lizzie is currently studying the Certificate IV in Companion Animal Services at the Delta Institute, which is an animal behaviour and training course. Lizzie began teaching the Puppy Preschool at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital in Dec 2015. Lizzie is enjoying the study and the hands on experience with Puppy Preschool.
