Naming Sydney’s Third City The Western Sydney community will be given the chance to have their say on part of the naming of Sydney’s third city, which will be the beating heart of the Western Sydney Aerotropolis. The area to be named is more than 100 hectares of land that will become home to research, science and education facilities as part of the first stage of the Aerotropolis Core precinct. It is located north of Bringelly and needs a new name to reflect its new future. Premier Gladys Berejiklian said the naming process to be carried out will find a unique name which will forever define Australia’s first 22nd Century City on the doorstep of the Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport. “Until now we have been referring to the area as the ‘Aerotropolis Core’, but with the city quickly moving from a vision to a reality now is the time for it to be given a real place name,” Ms Berejiklian said. “The area to be named is the parcel of land which will be the CBD of the Aerotropolis and we want its name to be as iconic as the existing major city centres of ‘Sydney’ and ‘Parramatta’. “Whatever it is ultimately called after the naming process, this part of Greater Sydney’s third city will be a key driver of economic growth, jobs and opportunities across NSW and the nation for generations to come.” Minister for Jobs, Investment, Tourism and Western Sydney Stuart Ayres said as part of the naming process the community will be consulted and asked to nominate potential names for the new city. “We want the community to help us come up with a list of names that reflect the area’s heritage, recognise people who have contributed to NSW or honour significant figures with ties to Western Sydney,” Mr Ayres said. “A naming committee comprising of the Premier, myself, DPC Secretary Tim Reardon and Western Parkland City Authority Chair Jennifer Westacott will consider the options and make a final decision.” To find out more and submit your suggestion go to: www.wcaa.sydney/nametheplace WARRAGAMBA BAPTIST CHURCH

Pastor’s Corner This first week in September we celebrate Father’s Day. Now, I am privileged to be the Father of three daughters, and Pa to eight grandchildren plus a step granddaughter. Being a Father or a Grandfather is not easy, perhaps you are naturally better at it than I am. My own Father passed away many years ago. He was sixty years old at that time; so, in terms of years I have outlived him. My Father was very self-sacrificing, the family always came first before his personal needs. He served in the army during World War 2, then after the war returned to his profession as a jeweller. After about a year, he re-enlisted in the army. We didn’t have a lot of money, so at times my Dad secretly would pawn his watch and hitch hike to work, so that we had enough for school or home expenses. He left the army because the army wanted to post him to the top of North Queensland. Dad didn’t see that as being good for us as a family; so, he walked away from his career, which he loved. Now, I know that if my Mum had been consulted, she would have wanted to talk Dad out of such a decision. So, Dad didn’t tell her. Instead he arrived home with all his belongings and the army career was now over. That is a man who sacrifices all for his family. I am not at all sure I can live up to my Dad’s example in this area. Spiritually God, our heavenly Father, is a God who sacrifices. The scriptures record, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16). Now I can’t imagine having to give up one of my children, so that other people would survive, but God sent his Son, so that you and I could find life with Him, even after we pass away. This Father’s Day, will you take some time to remember and thank the God of all creation, for the sacrifice He gave His one and only Son. Happy Father’s Day. r Image: www.pixabay.com FAITH – ANGLICAN PARISH MULGOA

Article Submitted by: Senior Minister Christopher Braga St Thomas’ Mulgoa | P: 47331635 W: gpachurch.online | A: 43 St Thomas’ Road Mulgoa Service Times: Sundays @ 9.30am I was driving with my seven-year old daughter the other day. I often ask her questions as we drive along. It helps me see how she sees the world and what is going on in her life. I remember being seven myself and thinking a lot about stuff and am sure she does the same. So, I asked her a question. I asked her, “Why do you think God has sent the pandemic?” It’s a pretty tough question. Some might even think that the pandemic undermines the very existence of God. “Surely God wouldn’t send a pandemic!” could be the response. How would you answer the question? Her answer came back in a flash, “So people will turn back to him.” Wow. That wasn’t the answer I was expecting. I sat in the car reflecting on it for while and then said, “I think you are right.” When things are easy we tend to depend on ourselves and forget about God, but when things are hard, when we can’t control things, we turn to God. Jesus came so that we might turn from our rebellion against God and trust him. The pandemic is terrible and we pray regularly that this virus would be taken from our world, but whatever you do, don’t waste the pandemic and use this time as an opportunity to turn to God.

Three young people will gain hands-on experience working at Western Sydney’s historic Fernhill Estate as part of a NSW Government partnership with Productivity Force. Member for Mulgoa Tanya Davies said the young people are being employed for three months to do non-heritage maintenance work on the historic site to provide them with industry training and to develop practical job skills. “These three young men have graduated from Productivity Bootcamp – an eight-week pre-employment program that gives participants exposure to a range of trades like carpentry, electrical, plumbing, scaffolding and formwork” Mrs Davies said. “Now they are being employed by Productivity Force, which has been contracted to provide maintenance services at Fernhill Estate. This partnership arrangement is about investing in young people and giving them knowledge, tools and opportunities to help them secure a productive job”. The three young recruits employed to assist with maintenance work at the Fernhill Estate are Bryce Irsaj, 20, from Penrith; Matthew Glass, 19, from Werrington, and Biagio Modafferi, 16, from North Strathfield. “The bootcamp was a great opportunity to get an introduction to all the different trades and it has led to this job where I’ll get even more experience, so I would definitely recommend it to anyone else looking to get a start” Mr Irsaj said. Productivity Force General Manager Kieran Duffy said he was excited by the partnership with the NSW Government as a way to maintain the beauty of Fernhill Estate while providing employment and work experience opportunities for young people. “The three bootcamp graduates are working at Fernhill Estate five days a week under the supervision of three qualified tradespeople to assist with a range of jobs including grass and ground maintenance, timber fence repairs and stone wall repair” Mr Duffy said. “We will also give up to 30 young people participating in Productivity Bootcamp work experience at the estate. Trade industries are experiencing skills shortages, so this is about working together to upskill young people to be our next generation of workers”. Community Spirit Alive in Warragamba They say that the greatness of a community is measured by the compassionate actions of its members. This can certainly be said about the Wollondilly Shire, in particular local groups like the Warradale Men’s Shed. The Warradale Men’s Shed is a dedicated group of men, including retirees, who have a range of experience in trades and professions that come together to volunteer their time for various woodwork/metal work projects. Many of these projects are done for the community for little to no charge. Importantly, it’s also a group where members can bond and discuss men’s health with one another. “With the drought and being fully retired, I felt that I was not contributing or achieving anything. I joined the Shed at an open day last year. I soon found that I could put my professional knowledge to work to help them and dabble in wood working using my hands. I’ve now made many friends and feel right at home” said Michael Davis, Warradale Men’s Shed member. One of their current local projects is making bird and animal nesting boxes for the Buxton Community Corridor Regeneration Project established by Geraldine Cox, whilst another is making stools and tables for the Cedar Creek Markets from recycled pine pallets. They make and repair various timber and metal items on request for members of the community. They also help when needed with jobs like repairing fences for pensioners and carpentry. Items that they make can be purchased at the Shed at various costs or donations too. “The Shed is for men over the age of 18, particularly those who are retired or have the time during the working week. We welcome new members. Men can sit and talk or can get involved in shed activities, whatever they fancy. We have COVID safe practices. Turn up during opening hours and check it out” explained Michael. The Warradale Men’s Shed is located at 10 Eighteenth Street, Warragamba (opposite Warragamba Workers Club). They open every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 9:00am to 2:00pm. The group are a not-for-profit organisation with a small annual membership fee and a donation of $2 each time you come to the shed. r Feature Article: [Cover] Geoff Bulmer, Les Rhodes, Garry Saunders, Bill Christie and Ron Davies with the barn owl nesting boxes | Image: Michael Davis

Is it Time for a Family Review?
First Sunday in September
It is a good idea every now and again to take a look at your family and review what has been, and where you would like to focus in the future. This helps you to figure out what is truly important in the life of your family, so you can do more of it. The following questions may help you to do that. Gather around and have a discussion - share your thoughts, feelings, and ideas. AS A FAMILY… • We would like to visit… • We have fun when we… • Our weaknesses are… • Our favourite family memories are… • We show appreciation for each other by… • We like the same movies, books, and music… • Places in the community we like to go to… • We are good at… • What we argue about the most… • What I tell others about my family… • The unique things we have in common… • Three goals for our future as a family… As part of any review, you have to be prepared for some hard truths. Be prepared to listen and acknowledge. It’s not about blame, it’s just about figuring out what you are doing well and what you can do better as a family. r

Warradale Little Athletics: Family, Fun and Fitness
Warradale Little A’s is a family oriented, not for profit sporting club that caters for children aged 3 to 17 years. The club has been providing competition for the children of our local community since 1989. From the very beginning, the club had people with the passion to lay the foundations of what is now a successful centre that is welcoming and inclusive to athletes of all abilities. They look forward to sharing their passion with the community for many years to come. Little athletics events include throws, jumps, sprints, and distance running, walks and hurdles. Competition is held on Friday nights at Warragamba Sporting Oval from 6:00pm to 9:00pm. The Under 6’s to Under 17’s competition program is run over two weeks, whilst their Tiny Tots (3 and 4 years old) enjoy a modified program that involves play-training activities. The new season starts on Friday 2nd October, which is also a come and try day. It will follow the COVID-19 protocols for a safe Return to Play. Registration for the coming season is now available and must be done online via the Little Athletics NSW website (http:// www.lansw.com.au) or you can use the Sign Up button on Warradale Little A’s Facebook page. Latest @ Luddenham by Wayne Willmington
With the sewer coming to Luddenham soon, the Western Sydney Planning Partnership and Sydney Water are carrying out site investigations of the Aerotropolis and some locals have received registered letters informing them of onsite inspections. Investigations have begun and will focus on sites within the Aerotropolis. This is where further land capability, biodiversity, waterway and heritage investigations are required as well as investigating future stormwater, wastewater and drinking water services for the Aerotropolis. The investigations will help inform the development of the precinct plans for the Aerotropolis. Luddenham is in the Agribusiness precinct and detailed plans are due for release by the end of the year. Luddenham Rural Fire Service (RFS) are seeking expressions of interest from anyone that is interested in becoming a volunteer firefighter. No experience is necessary, and all training and equipment will be provided. You must be 18 years or older and reside or work in Luddenham village. Luddenham RFS is made up entirely of volunteers and they attend about 120 emergencies each year. Training is held at the station on the second Monday of the month. If you are interested or would like more information, please contact Bob on 0408 734140. At the recent annual meeting of the Progress Association, the following were elected: Wayne Willmington (President), John Riordon (Snr Vice President), John Willmington (Vice President) and Glen Marsden (Treasurer). Also, the Show Society held their AGM with the following elected: Wayne Willmington (President), Garry Rogers (Snr Vice President), Lenka Nikesitch and Carolyn Wong (Vice Presidents) and Harley Woods (Secretary –Treasurer). Local State Member Tanya Davies was added as a Patron.
Over the past month, topsoil from the main Airport Site has been transported to Willowdene Avenue in Luddenham. This property is being used as an environmental conservation zone for native flora species. The Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport biodiversity assessment was based on a range of flora and fauna ecological surveys of the airport site, both before and after the airport’s Environmental Impact Statement 2016 (EIS). The airport site was dominated by introduced grasslands, cleared land or cropland, with small pockets of open eucalypt woodland and shrubland. While vegetation and fauna habitat at the airport site were in a generally poor condition, there are fragments of critically endangered ecological communities. The Western Sydney Airport Plan 2016 (Airport Plan) sets out a range of measures to reduce and offset the impacts on protected species and biodiversity values from construction and development of the airport. If you have an opinion on what Luddenham of the future should be like, please email your thoughts or views to willmingtons@bigpond.com.

Designing Your Building Project
Home Design Choices
Building Orientation In Australia and the Southern Hemisphere, 12 o’clock midday is in the north whilst in the Northern Hemisphere, 12 o’clock midday is in the south. When building in Australia, the perfect orientation for constructing your home and other structures is when the main rooms are facing north. This is because, in Winter, your main home rooms should receive the Winter sun to warm your home with less need for heaters. The problem with new home buyers is that the view from the home is important to them. It is important to have a middle ground regarding the placement of your new home on your property. It is advised that a front covered veranda would shade the north and west orientation from the harsh Summer sun, when facing north and west in Australia. The covered veranda structure will keep the home cool in Summer and keep the warmth in Winter. This allows the low Winter sun to warm up the rooms through the low set north and west-facing windows. Verandas The veranda became popular in Australia around the late 1790’s – early 1810’s. They were introduced by colonial soldiers and free colonials that had seen and experienced the veranda during their travels to the West Indies and India. Today, the veranda is still a great place to relax, sleep and entertain to keep out of the heat of the day during our hot Summer. Many verandas were converted into bedrooms, if the need arose to increase the size of the family and home. This occurred during the late 1880’s, up until the time that councils started to raise revenue, making it compulsory to report your intentions to lodge a DA and CC (Development Application and Construction Certificate). I have come upon many older homes that had covered rear verandas, converted into bedrooms or rooms. They were built a long time ago and were never approved by the local council. In this case, you will get unstuck when you want to sell the home and the client’s solicitor, or conveyancing agent find out that the covered veranda was never approved by the council. Council will insist that the structure be drawn up and submitted for approval. (See next issue for a continuation of this topic)

Happy Fathers Day
Happy Fathers Day Enjoy the day spoiling your Dad or being with your Dad or thinking of your Dad. You will have to think of something creative to do to celebrate Fathers Day due to the Coronavirus crisis!
Contactless Consultations Due To Coronavirus
Due to the Coronavirus crisis, we are still performing contactless consults, with the nurse bringing the pet into the hospital and the client waiting in the car. The veterinarians are calling the client to discuss any health issues and to discuss the treatment plans. The government restrictions are easing, however, as we work so closely together inside the hospital, we cannot be more than 1.5m apart from each other and if one of our staff becomes sick, then we will all become sick and we will have to close the business for 2 weeks or more. We have come so far, and we would hate to go backwards. We cannot wait for the Coronavirus crisis to be over, but it is looking like we have to create a new normal. Have Your Say on Wollondilly’s Draft Library Strategy Public libraries play a fundamental role in building communities, providing not only a wide range of information, educational and entertainment resources for people of all ages, but also as a place to engage in events and make connections with others. To make sure the Wollondilly Library continues to play this vital role in the future, Council is seeking feedback on the draft Wollondilly Library Strategy 2020 – 2026. With the Shire’s population expected to grow in the coming years, Wollondilly Library will move to a new larger building, as part of the broader Community, Cultural and Civic Precinct in Picton. The draft Wollondilly Library Strategy identifies the enhanced services and spaces that the Wollondilly Library could offer, particularly during the transition time as it grows into that new
space, as well as beyond. Wollondilly Mayor Matthew Deeth said, “We want to hear from library users and the general community about what they think their library should look like.” “We want to ensure that the library meets Wollondilly’s needs now and into the future, so I encourage everyone to take a look at the strategy and give us your feedback.” Community input was an integral part of drafting the Strategy and Council wants to ensure that it supports opportunities for inclusion, connection, participation, creation and literacy. To view the draft Strategy and make comments, head to www.yoursay.wollondilly.nsw.gov.au Consultation will close on 18 September 2020. For more information please call Council on 4677 1100.

Is Zinc Good or Bad for my Joint Cartilage? The following appeared in a leading daily newspaper: ‘Korean study reveals zinc rich foods could be the cause for osteoarthritis’ Two different studies state the opposite: 1. Zinc protects articular chondrocytes (cartilage cells) through changes in Nrf2-mediated antioxidants, cytokines and matrix metalloproteinases (Huang 2017) 2. Zinc protects chondrocytes (cartilage cells) from monosodium iodoacetate-induced damage by enhancing ATP and mitophagy (Huang 2020) So, is zinc or zinc rich food good or bad for cartilage? Short answer – sufficient zinc is vital for cartilage. While the entire newspaper article implicates zinc as a possible cause of osteoarthritis, the comments section of the same article states that the author of the scientific paper in question said ‘No evidence available to date clearly indicated that zinc plays a causal role in osteoarthritis’. This article for one reason or another is why doctors say – never trust Dr Google! Zinc is used in > 3000 human-proteins ~10% of all body proteins; is vital for cell communication. Mitochondria produce energy that allows chondrocytes to maintain strong cartilage. The second study above details how scientists can, in a few days, induce osteoarthritis by injecting ‘monosodium-iodoacetate’ into animal joints. Monosodiumiodoacetate negatively affects 14 separate mitochondrial processes, precipitously lowering energy production, causing chondrocyte damage and death. Chondrocyte death results in
inflammation, then cartilage quickly thins, and animals get pain and all other hallmarks of osteoarthritis. In both animals and humans, the likely root cause of osteoarthritis is poor energy production by mitochondria of joint cells. Zinc supplementation of animals stops all 14 negative effects of Monosodium-iodoacetate, maintains mitochondrial function, and ‘almost completely reverse(s) the effects of monosodiumiodoacetate, suggesting (zinc’s) potential protective role against osteoarthritis progression. Great mitochondrial function requires getting great nutrition, plus the appropriate hormonal signals from things such as cartilage specific exercise, appropriate sleep and even sunshine. Good cartilage needs the same things. Bad diet, inappropriate/ too little exercise, poor sleep and not enough sun, are stressors that can lead to poor mitochondrial function, poor cartilage cell health and osteoarthritis. Zinc is an important nutrient, sufficient intake of which will help prevent osteoarthritis, but it’s just ‘one of many’ things that together as a team will support excellent joint health.

Last month in this very column, I asked ‘August’ to be kind. In turn, it was a very sombre month. If you’re anything like me, I watched the news daily to keep abreast of the COVID-19 developments in both NSW and across other states. The message of mask wearing was and remains to be a consistent message. If not for your protection, definitely for those around you. The tightening of restrictions around school end of year gatherings and celebrations has been introduced, along with a series of limitations relating to specific activities (singing, choirs, windinstruments). 2020 has been a journey like no other. Like many other small businesses, The District Gazette is locally owned. Our family and staff live (and love) local, we shop where you do, our kids attend the schools that your children do (or did), we dine at local restaurants and use local trades/ services also owned by fellow members of the community. Like many businesses, we are grateful for the support of both our longstanding advertisers (and the new ones!) along with our loyal readers (just like you)! When reaching out to our advertisers be sure to tell them where you found them! It gives them (and us!) a real kick. Now give yourself permission to sneak away and immerse yourself in all the latest local happenings. Enjoy Your Community News. Remember, ‘Help people. Even when you know they can’t help you back’.
