Silverdale Road upgrades to Commence in September Wollondilly Shire Council has welcomed $5 million worth of funding through the Western Sydney Infrastructure Program, which will be used to begin construction on the Silverdale Road Upgrade. This project will begin in the Silverdale township in early September 2021, with major improvements planned between Warradale Road and the Silverdale Shopping Centre. Work will include resurfacing the road, widening road shoulders to allow roadside parking, kerb and gutter works, drainage, a

new footpath, and town entry zones. Mayor Robert Khan said that the upgrade would be welcomed by Silverdale and Warragamba residents as well as the broader Wollondilly community. “This project will see the quality of Silverdale Road made more suitable for the growing demand of the Wollondilly community and set it up as a connection route to the planned airport at Badgery’s Creek,” he said. “I would like to thank the Federal Government and the Member for Hume, Angus Taylor MP for helping to make this important project possible”. Nace Civil Engineering have been awarded the tender for construction, with the works scheduled to take approximately one year. r

Items such as damaged or broken household furniture, whitegoods, mattresses, and bundled garden vegetation can be included in a bulky waste collection.

Marcus’ Quest to Save the Koalas

OPENING HOURS Mon-Fri: 9:30am-5.30pm | Sat: 8am-1pm 02 4774 0749 8 Econo Place, Silverdale Local Mulgoa koala expert and author Marcus Zorich has just released ‘Intergalactic Space Farting Koalas’, a children’s book with the proceeds all going towards planting more koala food trees. The story is about two koala groups, one in the wild and one in captivity. They meet, interact, and are forced to learn from each other; while in the background, there’s mythical tales and folk stories of a third type of koala. There’s also plenty of twists and turns along the way. “Writing ‘Intergalactic Space Farting Koalas’ was a 10-year project to educate Australians about the work behind the scenes of koala care and the amount of effort and planning that goes into supporting and feeding captive koalas in large numbers. It also highlights the problems of both wild and captive koalas. The book channels you to see it through the lens of koalas, with the ongoing development of human infrastructure, faced with even more extreme climate events such as bushfires, caused by damage to the environment, including loss of habitat due to urban expansion. I’ve created a story around these issues” said Marcus to the Mulgoa Valley Gazette. The book is also about resilience. Struggling with his schooling growing up, this didn’t stop Marcus believing in himself. It was written in a way for students who are struggling with their own identity, and schooling to find their place in the world. As well as being an author, Marcus is also the Managing Director of Koala Retreat. Koala Retreat assists in the conservation of koalas and their habitat. He has plans to write two further books, forming a trilogy. All three books will be the pillars of a greater story, where in between each book will allow for many short stories. ‘Intergalactic Space Farting Koalas’ is available to purchase locally from Mulgoa Post Office, Wallacia Post Office and Luddenham Post Office. “I feel truly honoured and blessed that these small businesses are on board in my vision for a different alternative to koala conservation” smiled Marcus. “One book sold puts one koala food tree in the ground!” You can learn more at www.spacekoalas.com and www. koalaretreat.com, or email Marcus at marcus@koalaretreat.com. r Marcus’ book is available now | Image: Marcus Zorich

Keeping Children Safe Online: What Are They Seeing? How do we prepare children to cross the road? We speak to them about the risks, we practise looking right and left, and we show them how to identify zebra crossings. In the beginning, we hold their hands and walk with them. Now consider, have you given as much thought to preparing your child to cross what is dubbed “the information superhighway” – the internet? In a time when social distancing is key to addressing the evolving public health issue of Covid-19, the internet allows children to learn, connect and create. However, going online is not risk-free. Over the next three articles, we explore three questions every parent must ask when their child uses the internet: 1. What are they seeing? 2. What are they doing? 3. Who are they talking to? According to eSafety research, most young people have viewed inappropriate content before the age of 17. Nearly half of children aged 9 to 16 regularly view sexual images. These images are most often viewed on either content-sharing apps such as Snapchat or Discord, or on live-streaming platforms such as TikTok or Periscope. How do you know what your child is seeing? Your first thought might be to maximise parental controls (and this is important), but the first step to online safety does not require technology. It is the simple, powerful but often under-estimated tool of parenting: Talking to your child. According to research from our national Centre to Counter Child Exploitation, only half of Australian parents regularly talk to their children about online safety. It is vital to create the space for your children to speak to you honestly about any concerns they have about their internet use. Here are some ways you can do this: • Be curious and supportive, learn about their favourite games or apps; • Talk to them about the risks of going online; • Problem-solve together what they might do if they see something scary or yucky online; • Avoid using the removal of devices as a behavioural consequence. For more information, visit the eSafety Commissioner’s website on https://www.esafety.gov.au/parents.

Mulgoa mum Alicia Hollier could never have predicted that an idea whilst visiting a craft fair a few short years ago would one day become a successful business, Lishy’s Vinyl Creations. “My journey began just over three years ago, when I created my business called Lishy’s Vinyl Creations. Whilst attending a craft fair, I stumbled upon a machine that took my interest. I started thinking about what I could make with this for my own children,” said Alicia. Having already started a chocolate bouquet business, Lishy’s Lolly Creations, Alicia has always had an interest in craft. She soon completed courses and was making personalised vinyl items for her children and friends. Before too long, she started getting requests and the business was born. “I love to personalise items with vinyl. Clothing such as shirts and jackets, mugs, wedding items and all sorts of things. I also keep a range of items that people can purchase from me to have whatever they choose written on it. A special message on a mug or something personal for a loved one is always a wonderful gift” Alicia beamed. “Since upgrading all my equipment, I can sublimate items with photos. This means that mugs with printed designs are even dishwasher safe. I now use high quality machinery and presses which create a professional job” she said. Taylah’s Olympic Dream Silverdale’s Taylah Tsitsikronis has just returned home from Japan, after making her Olympic debut for the Aussie Spirit Women’s Softball Team at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. 27-year-old Taylah was part of the Aussie Spirit Women’s Softball Team that finished their Olympic campaign in 5th place with a 1-4 win/loss record. “It was a pretty cool experience, being around a lot of high-level athletes. The competition was like we thought it was going to be which was very tough playing against world class teams. The result was definitely not what we wanted, and it’s made us hungrier to be better, but as a whole it was a great experience to be part of” said Taylah to the Mulgoa Valley Gazette. Taylah and her teammates competed against Japan, gold medal defending champions, in the first event of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Despite spectators being unable to attend the games, millions of Australians were cheering on the Aussie Spirit from their lounge rooms around the world. “Playing at the Olympic Games, it’s a dream come true! It wasn’t too different playing with no crowds, as softball doesn’t get the thousands and thousands of people in the stands here in Australia. It would have been cool to have our supporters there with us. We did feel every bit of support that was sent to us from home though” recalled Taylah. She explained that it was hard to choose just one highlight of her Olympic experience, “The whole experience was a highlight, not one particular point. The USA game for us was probably our strongest game, our team showed genuine fight against one of the best teams in the world”. Taylah plans to continue playing softball at home again once the health restrictions for COVID are lifted. She has no plans to hang up the boots just yet on the game that she loves. “We can’t thank everyone enough. The amount of support we got all the way from home and from around the world was amazing. Thank you to everyone that supported me through this experience and helped me get to where I am today. I am so proud to represent the country and I’m sorry we didn’t get further for you guys. We will be back bigger, better, and stronger from this experience” Taylah ended. r Feature Article: [Cover + Above] Taylah in action at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics | Image: Softball Australia

Latest @ Luddenham by Wayne Willmington COVID-19 has had its biggest impact on Luddenham since the start of the pandemic, with two students at Luddenham Public School testing positive, sending many families into isolation. Confusion as the Liverpool Council section of Luddenham has more stringent restrictions including a curfew from 9pm to 5am, with residents only allowed to exercise outdoor for up to one hour per day. Luddenham Progress Association is working with Peter Sidgreaves Member for Camden to try and get the Liverpool part of Luddenham taken out of the LGA of concern, so that the restrictions would be the same as the Penrith side of Luddenham. Luddenham Progress Association is also talking to both our local members of Parliament as well as both Councils about all Luddenham west of the Airport boundary being moved into Penrith Council. Aerotropolis Community Commissioner, Professor Ryan has submitted her report and recommendations on the draft Precinct Plans to the NSW Government. This includes plans for Luddenham’s future. At the time of going to print, the Government had not responded to her submission but is expected too shortly. Also, the Western Sydney Aerotropolis Community Liaison Group is changing to the Western Sydney Aerotropolis Community Consultative Committee and will now be Chaired by Professor Roberta Ryan. Penrith Council has had the charity bins in Sales Park removed; in fact, they have had all charity bins on Council land removed. The reason behind the decision is that the sites were being abused, with some people bringing truckloads of rubbish and dumping next to the bins. This was also happening at Luddenham. Luddenham Rural Fire Service (RFS) are seeking expressions of interest from anyone that is interested in becoming a volunteer firefighter. No experience is necessary, all training and equipment will be provided. You must be 18 years or older and reside or work in Luddenham village. Luddenham RFS is made up entirely of volunteers and they attend about 120 emergencies each year. Training is held at the station on the second Monday of the month. If you are interested or would like more information, please contact Bob on 0408 734140. Work is progressing well on the toilet block for the Luddenham Progress Hall. The toilet block is being built offsite by Elite Buildings at Bringelly, consisting of a disabled and three unisex toilets as well as two wash basins. On completion, it will be delivered and attached to the rear of the hall. r Work progressing on the Progress Hall toilet block | Image Supplied

HELPING THE FAMILIES OF OUR GREAT COMMUNITY FOR 40 YEARS Penrith Storm Chasing is a not-for-profit group that works alongside emergency services and relevant authorities to provide weather updates to the local community. Formed by John Scerri in 2011, and joined by Nathan Brookfield, Grant Purday and Jimmy Deguara the popular group has over 50,000 followers on Facebook. “The group helps disseminate forecasts and warnings relating to severe storms and other significant weather such as the recent flooding and bushfires, hailstorms, strong winds and even heat waves. We take feedback including photographs and videos from the public and assist in alleviating any concerns and provide information and contact to the relevant authorities such as the RFS, SES and the Bureau of Meteorology” said Grant Purday of Penrith Storm Chasing. “When a warning is issued by one of the authorities, which includes the Bureau of Meteorology, NSW Rural Fire Service, NSW State Emergency Service, NSW Emergency Management Act and/or any other Government authority under the Act, Penrith Storm Chasing gets notified. If these warnings are relevant to our community, we post them to our page” Grant continued. Penrith Storm Chasing have aided the NSW Rural Fire Service, organising a GoFundMe campaign to ‘Help Castlereagh Rural Fire Brigade’, in response to the 2019/2020 bushfires. The funds raised by the group and local community bought critical items to help with the training of its members and assisting with public awareness. They also helped Penrith State Emergency Service to get members of the public to help build sandbags with the recent floods. “I love working with the team, as they all come from a variety of fields with experience and background skillsets. We all have a common passion involving weather and in particular assisting others in the Penrith and surrounding regions, from both an educational perspective and helping do what we can to keep people safe” explained Grant. HEALTH MATTERS

Article Written + Submitted by: Andreas Klein Nutritionist + Remedial Therapist from Beautiful Health + Wellness P: 0418 166 269

Chronic Migraine – Could it Really Have a Simple Solution? This article was inspired by a patient who has suffered ongoing debilitating migraines for some years. The patient attended the clinic while in the middle of a 4-day migraine attack, which had been preceded by visual aura. Her severe headache was accompanied by photophobia (sensitivity to light) and bouts of nausea and vomiting. The patient had spent a considerable amount of time suffering on her bathroom floor, sick and in semi-darkness. Medications had been ineffective, and she was desperate for relief. The Greek word for migraine is ‘hemikrania’ and comes from the Greek roots hemi (half ) and kranion (skull or head) literally ‘half the head’. Our modern term migraine defines a recurrent throbbing headache that typically affects one side (or area) of the head, often with intense pain, nausea, and sensitivity to light and sound. Migraines are of two types, those: 1. with aura - called classic migraine 2. without aura called common migraine Auras are visual-field or other disturbances that usually strike before the migraine itself: • Flashes of light • Shimmering spots or stars • Blind spots (scotomas), with simple geometric designs • Zigzag lines floating across the visual field • Other changes in vision, or

• Vision loss But can include other temporary symptoms: • Numbness, typically felt as tingling in a hand or one side of the face that may spread slowly along a limb • Speech or language difficulty • Muscle weakness 4.9 million Australians suffer migraines, 71% are women, 86% of working age. 7.6% of migraine sufferers experience chronic migraine (≥15 migraine days-per-month). The estimated $35.7 billion personal and financial costs Australia-wide are staggering: o $14.3 billion in health system costs o $16.3 billion of productivity costs o $5.1 billion other costs Unfortunately, these costs are likely needlessly incurred as the majority of migraines are generally easily treated, usually without pain killers. The above patient was given a full body remedial treatment with appropriate additional Muscle Elongation Therapy applied to specific head, neck, and shoulder muscles. Immediately following treatment, all migraine symptoms had abated and the patient sat smiling and yawning ready for home and sleep. If you’ve been suffering migraine or other headaches, feel free to call the clinic. Next month well take a further look at what science says about migraine cause.

Pastor’s Corner

One of the best parts of my life is that I am the father of three beautiful daughters; and each of them have become amazing mothers. Sunday September 5 is Father’s Day, but it’s still unknown whether we will be able to gather. Whilst that would be my heart’s desire, either way I will know that they love me and that is so special. One of my favourite Bible stories is about a lost son. A son who wants his independence, he wants to go and spend time and money enjoying himself. He asks his father for his share of the family inheritance, then having received it, proceeds to spend it on wine, women, and song. But as the story goes, the funds run out, he is hungry, alone, and desperate. The young man decides to go back home. He will ask his father to employ him, just like any other servant. As he walks down the road, his father sees him coming and runs to embrace him. The father is so delighted to see him that he finds him new clothes and places a ring on his finger. Next, the father throws a party and invites the young man’s friends to come and celebrate the return of his muchloved son. The young man’s brother is angry and upset with his father. After all, he has been working hard the whole time whilst his brother wasted the inheritance. The father said to the angry brother “My son, you are always with me, and everything I have is yours. But we had to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and now is found,” (Luke 15). There are so many aspects to consider about this story. There is the issue of forgiveness of those who have hurt us, there is the anger of the brother about fairness and feeling undervalued; but overriding all these is the father’s love. My prayer is that you will draw close to God, your heavenly father, who loves you for who you are and forgives you for all that you have done.

PAWS A WHILE

Article Written + Submitted by: Camille Brandt from Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital A: 49 Wentworth Rd, Orchard Hills P: 4736 2027

Happy Fathers Day A Poem from Your Dog Before I was a Dog Dad: I had never been peed on, pooped on, drooled on, chewed on or nipped by puppy teeth. Before I was a Dog Dad: I had complete control of my thoughts, my body and mind. I slept all night without sharing the pillows or covers. Before I was a Dog Dad: I never looked into big soulful eyes and cried. I never felt my heart break into a million pieces when I couldn’t stop a hurt. I never knew something so furry and four legged could affect my heart so deeply. Before I was a Dog Dad: I had never held a sleeping puppy just because I couldn’t put it down. I had never gotten out of bed in the middle of the night to make sure all was well. I didn’t know how good it feels to feed a hungry puppy. I didn’t know that something so small could make me feel so important. Before I was a Dog Dad: I had never known the warmth, the joy, the love, the heartache, the wonderment or the satisfaction of being a dog Dad.

Spring is finally here! It’s hard to believe that the month of September is already upon us. Where has this year gone? We are in the midst of the lockdown across Greater Sydney; however, things are looking positive. The Premier has announced that restrictions should be eased by the end of the month, as the COVID-19 vaccination rates increase. Never has it been more important than now to support local business. Whether it’s a home delivered meal from a café or restaurant or a trade/service that you need for home, businesses in our community need our help. Get behind them and show your support where you can. The 2020 Tokyo Olympics have come and gone, and the Paralympic Games have begun. Millions across the country have been cheering on our Aussie athletes as they take on the world’s best. This month’s stories are filled with inspiration and hope – ‘hope’ that we can all finish the year positively, safely and healthily together. Stay kind, it makes you beautiful. Time to catch up on all the latest happenings in Your Community News.
