Dorahy Clan Celebrate 175 Years in Australia
Issue 150
15 Cel
ebr
Over 250 members of the Dorahy family will gather in Wallacia on Sunday July 15th near the site of the original farm to celebrate the 175th anniversary of the family’s arrival in Australia. William and Ann Dorahy arrived with their family in July 1837 on the Adam Lodge. They were a farming family from County Tyrone recruited by an agent of Governor Bourke to bring valued skills to the growing colony. Having organised the baptism of their new son William at Parramatta they settled in the Greendale area as tenant farmers. Four of their eight children became parents and had a total of 48 children. A giant family tree will be displayed at the reunion displaying the names and photos of almost 2000 descendants of William and Ann. Amongst those attending will be well known Rugby League player John Dorahy with members of his family. For more information please contact Michael Dorahy, 14 Abinger Place, Richmond, Victoria 3121 (mldorahy@optusnet.com.au). Phone: 0407 093 754. A large branch of the Dorahy family lives in the local area and many will be attending the reunion.

Hugs and tears of joy were the order of the day for Penrith based Riverland Harmony Chorus after competing in a national singing contest in Canberra last month, the annual Sweet Adelines Convention. With 33 singers on stage Riverland Harmony Chorus came third in the mid size Chorus division, and 8th in Australia! ‘We are very happy’ Music Director Nerryl Liston said. ‘We knew we had improved a lot since last year, but that kind of recognition was a wonderful surprise!’ Riverland Harmony Chorus is a women’s Barbershop Chorus, with members coming from the Penrith, Blue Mountains, Mulgoa, Wallacia and Hawkesbury areas and beyond. The youngest singer is 12 and the oldest 83! ‘We will also be running a special 6 weeks induction program for women who are interested in learning more about barbershop singing, starting on the 27th of August. If you enjoy singing and are interested in joining a Chorus we may be just what you’ve been looking for! You can wait for our new members’ workshops in a few weeks or come along to a re-
hearsal at any time! But be warned – you may get hooked!’ The Chorus rehearses on Monday evenings at Glenmore Park Child and Family Centre. For more details please phone 4739 1834. For any booking enquiries please call 4576 6916 or 0434 351 612. More informaiton via their Facebook page or website www.riverlanharmonychorus.org.

Spirits, Ghosts, Mediums and the Bible In deep pain, bereaved people in their grief sometimes become desperate to know their loved ones are now safe and happy. As a Christian minister I urge people not to seek contact with their dead loved ones, but instead entrust them to God. It is contrary to the Bible and Christian faith to contact the world of the dead. The existence of the spirits or souls of dead people is supported by the bible. The spirits of Christian believers have a conscious existence with God after death and before Jesus returns and brings about the general resurrection of the body (Luke 16:19-31; 23:43; Philippians 1:23; Revelation 6:9-11). Those who trust Jesus go to be with the Lord after they die, and there they wait until Christ returns and raises the dead. We have no reason to think that the spirits or souls of dead believers can actually hear us, or even have knowledge of world affairs. They are not omniscient, but limited in knowledge, unlike God. So it is simply wishful thinking to say, ‘Well, now he is looking down upon us’. The Bible also speaks about the spirits of the dead or ghosts in the earthly realm. After Jesus rose from the dead, he appeared to his disciples, and said ‘he was not a ghost’, and said ‘a ghost does not have flesh and bones’ as he had. (Luke 24:36-42). The Risen Jesus then ate a piece of fish to prove he wasn’t a ghost. I imagine that if ghosts didn’t exist, Jesus simply would have said so. However, the bible also makes it clear that we should not attempt to contact the spirit world. God commanded that no one in Israel should be a medium or spiritist who consults the dead, engages in witchcraft, interprets omens, or casts spell. God says he will set his face against them (Leviticus 19:31; 20:6,27; Deuteronomy 18:913). People should instead inquire of their God. ‘Why consult the dead on behalf of the living? (Isaiah 8:19)' When God's Old Testament people disobeyed this instruction, they were punished. Because God was not communicating directly to King Saul, he hired a medium from Endor, whom he previously had evicted from Israel. The medium called up from the dead the prophet Samuel (1 Samuel 28:3-20). 1 Chronicles 10:13 says that 'Saul died because he was unfaithful to the LORD; he did not keep the word of the LORD and even consulted a medium for guidance'. (NIV) The book of Revelation warns us that those who practise ‘magic arts’ will not enter God’s heaven (Revelation 22:15). So as someone who cares about your spiritual welfare and eternal wellbeing, let me urge you. Please do not disobey God by contacting spirits and the souls of the dead, and say sorry to God if you have, and don’t do it again. The true spirit we need to commune with and contact is the Holy Spirit. God promises everyone who trusts in his son Jesus Christ receives his Holy Spirit: If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!” (Luke 11:13 NIV). The Holy Spirit is God himself who comes to live inside everyone who trusts Jesus. He enables us to think like Jesus and to live in a way that pleases Jesus as Lord and Saviour.

Jesus died on the cross to defeat all the spiritual powers, including Satan and the demons. We need never fear the spirit world again. So please do not settle for damaging and destructive substitutes, but ask God the Father for his Holy Spirit through Jesus Christ. Dr Broadbent has also published seven books, numerous papers and journals relative to his work in the preservation of Australia’s housing history, service that is inclusive of his work at the National Trust of Australia since 1975 and the Historic Houses Trust of NSW. A dedicated academic and researcher, Dr Broadbent resides at The Cottage, Mulgoa (c1810), an important early bungalow which he has saved from dereliction. It is the oldest house in Australia in private ownership. Beautifully sited on a small rise near Mulgoa Creek, the Cottage is one of the earliest and most important colonial houses, and still retains its fine rural setting. It formed the nucleus of the Mulgoa settlement. The pastoralists Henry, George and Edward Cox, each lived there until their respective homesteads, Glenmore, Winbourne and Fernhill, were built nearby. Local Mulgoa resident, Miles Stepniewski had the honour of unveiling the plaque at the newly renovated Scout hall in Lapstone for the Emu Plains Scouts. The Emu Plains Scouts have been meeting at the small Glenbrook Scout hall for several years. They now have renovated their hall in Lapstone which is much bigger with better facilities. Group Leader Mark Belcher says, “It is wonderful to have our own hall again and the committee have done a fantastic job on the old building. It was in a very poor state of repair and had been earmarked for demolition. “We have some fantastic leaders and the scout units are growing again. There are a record 12 Scouts attending the Jamboree in January 2013 and plenty of camps and outdoor activities organised.” Miles Stepniewski who started as a Cub with the Emu Plains unit and went on to achieve his Queen’s Scout award in 2011. On Sunday 17th of June around 8:40am a local resident was taking their dog for a walk on Warradale Rd towards Production Ave, Warragamba, when a lady walking her dog approached. She stopped to allow them to walk by, but even before they crossed paths her dog broke it’s lead and maliciously attacked the other dog. The local resident tried to pull it off but the attacking dog just wouldn’t let go of their dog. A young man driving by stopped to assist. The owner of the attacking dog said she would meet them at the Veterinary Clinic but never did show up. This local resident has advised that their dog was left with terrible injuries, terrified and traumatised and needing veterinary attention. It is believed the attacking dog was very similar to a Bullmastiff, very powerfully built and a fawn colour. If you have any information on a dog similar to this description, can you please contact 0421 347 491. All information will be kept discrete.

$250,000 grant for Mulgoa Valley Landcare Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies MP presented a cheque to Mulgoa Valley Landcare Group co-ordinator Lisa Harrold in recognition of a $250,000 grant for a Mulgoa Creek Resilience and Restoration Strategy 2012-2018 The project is a 6 year plan to remove invasive weeds at priority sites along the creek and restore the native vegetation. The Mulgoa Valley Landcare Group has been working along the creek for 16 years once a month with volunteers and additional help from landowners and occasional groups. It has made a huge difference to a large section of the creek but there are still many miles of dense non-native trees and weeds to tackle which are beyond the resources of the group. Ms Davies said “The project will provide a land owner support officer to deliver on-site conservation land management training and assistance to landowners within the Mulgoa Valley.” Professional bushcare regenerators will be contracted and all the work monitored and recorded. The Mulgoa project is among 33 across the State to share in $8million under the Community Bush Regeneration large projects grants. The Landcare Group meets on the first Saturday of the month and would love to have some additional volunteers. Phone Lisa on 0411 487 512 for details of the next activity site.

Water Views at Glenmore Park A burst water main was responsible for leaving up to 12 homes flooded in Glenmore Park on Tuesday 3rd July. Residents in Glengarry Drive and Westerly Way were woken at about 8am by torrents of water, with the current ripping up road and crushing driveways, causing thousands of dollars worth of damage. Thousands of litres of water from the broken pipes flooded parks and houses, with emergency services called to the scene and forced to close the street when it was discovered the burst main had also caused a gas leak forcing a further evacuation. Neighbours described it as a “raging river” and a “waterfall”.

Chris Duncan and his award winning Olive Oil
First Class Olive Oil
Local Silverdale family Catherine & Chris Duncan decided to put their hand to olive farming 11 years ago. The results they have achieved for their extra virgin oil in this time, are nothing short of outstanding! Silver Medal and Best in Class – Tamworth Show (2009). Silver Medal and Bronze Medal – Cowra Show (2009). Bronze Medal - Canberra Show 2009. Silver Medal - Sydney Royal Easter Show : Sydney Wine And Food Show 2009. Bronze Medal – Sydney Royal Easter Show: Sydney Wine and Food Show 2011. Silver Medal in Cowra Show 2011. Best in Show, Central West Region 2011
Their Olive farm is situated in the Bumbaldry Hills west of Cowra. “Starting from bare ground and cultivating 3000 olive trees, we have turned our land into hectares of high yielding olive production reaching commercial status in 2009.” says Catherine Duncan. Being a family business, they pride themselves in the fact that their TERRAN Australian Extra Virgin Olive Oil is free from mechanical harvesting. This limits the amount of contaminates exposed to the olives before processing. Catherine continues “All our olives are hand picked. The benefit of this is seen in the considerably high quality of our oil. All tests show our oil to be well below the limits set of an olive oil to be certified Extra Virgin Olive Oil.” For ultimate freshness, their olives are cold pressed immediately after harvesting. Great care is taken in the blending of the varieties to create their distinctive and unique Extra Virgin Olive Oil. It is their belief that you will enjoy its taste and versatility. Extra Virgin Olive Oil is superior in flavour and has many health benefits. It is high in vitamins and nutrients without preservatives and additives. Rich in polyphenels and antioxidants it helps to lower and maintain good cholesterol levels. Terran Oil is available at a number of local retail outlets including IGA Silverdale and Luddenham, Freds One Stop Shopping Smithfield, Carrington Cellars Katoomba, Mrs Martellis – Rouse Hill, Epping and Cherybrook, and at the Parisi at Rose Bay. For more information, contact Catherine and Chris Duncan by phone on 0418660206 or email: terranoil@bigpond.com

INSIDE & OUT Save time and money and improve your family’s meal times and kitchen creativity with the most advanced kitchen appliance on the market today. You might have seen it on TV recently or read some of the rave reviews in foodie magazines or but if you haven’t heard of it, the Thermomix TM31 unites the functions of more than 10 appliances in one compact unit all-in-one food processor. It’s a cooker that chops, beats, mixes, whips, grinds, kneads, minces, grates, juices, blends, heats, stirs, steams and weighs food, as well as other functions! Featuring a gearless long-life motor, steel blades and a stainless steel bowl, Thermomix brings a new dimension to food preparation and cooking. Faster and more efficient than any similar appliance, it saves time, money and space in the kitchen. Incredibly precise and powerful speed and temperature settings allow for smoother texture, better colour retention and faster speed of execution. Preparation is cut from minutes to seconds and cooking is gentle, ensuring the flavours, vitamins and minerals are locked into each mouthful. Best of all, one bowl and blade do it all. With today’s fast paced lifestyle, we cook far less than we used to. The ready-made foods that feature in today’s diet aren’t the best options. Thermomix lets users return to the tradition of home-style cooking using superior, streamlined technology, making it simple to bring fresh, wholesome, nutrientdense food back into our diets. Thermomix is particularly valuable for people with special dietary restrictions like coeliac disease and food allergies as they can precisely control what goes into the food they cook. This also means they can monitor the addition of harmful additives, colours and preservatives. Technology has come a long way since the days when our forbearers had to churn butter or grind grains by hand. While these products are now readily available on the supermarket shelves, they often contain additives to encourage a longer life, a stronger flavour or colour. Using Thermomix, you can make your own basic foods such as bread dough, tomato sauce, icing sugar and even flour with all natural products in a fraction of the time. Getting down and dirty As their fellow students relax and unwind during their last week of school holidays, 19 Year 11 PAC students, 4 teachers and a family from the College are travelling to Western Australia to begin 5 days of service in the remote community of Wickham. Wickham has a population of approx. 1,800 people and is a working mining town for the Pilbara Iron industry. 30% of the population are indigenous and the students will assist the community through the Bush Church Aid (BCA) ‘Dusty Boots’ program. The program is run for teenage students from urban and suburban areas to travel and serve remote and small communities of Australia. The program gives students the opportunity to serve others, take responsibility for their-selves and others whilst working with the local people, their needs and cultures. PAC’s students will be working in teams and their tasks will include running kids club, helping with BBQ church, working on stone church building in Roebourne (a historic aboriginao community) and working on the BCA rectory. A team of students will also be the cooks providing food for all of the workers. Trip organiser Beth Hazell “counts it a privilege to support BCA in remote areas and to advise and train students and teachers. The program allows the students to gain an understanding of life in a remote community and the challenges that they face on a daily basis.” The Dusty Boots Program is a small part of PAC’s Tabitha Program which was developed by PAC to encourage the development of active, caring and skilled people who, as a way of life, think of and service others. The program is a two-year program for HSC students in Years 11 and 12. At the completion of the program, students are awarded their Tabitha Diploma. It is hoped that the Tabitha Program will be a life changing program motivated by the College’s motto “To Serve Christ”.

Holy Family News For the past 3 years Holy Family School have held a fundraiser for the St. Vincent de Paul Winter Appeal at this time of the year. Supporting this event is part of the range of events that we run to support Social Justice initiatives in the school, to foster that sense of looking out for others and assisting in small ways, when and wherever possible. This year the students raised $263 to support the Warragamba chapter of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, which will go to the St. Vincent de Paul Society who support local families in need. On Monday 15th June Holy Family School held its Athletics Carnival, which turned out to be a fantastic day of activity and community celebration. We were blessed with perfect weather and a fabulous group of students who participated with great energy, enthusiasm and sense of fair play. The support shown for all participating showed a great level of school and team spirit. It was great to have so many parents in attendance at the carnival to support the children and to assist with running the day. Congratulations to Cameron Gill, Jay Kirk, Ethan Harris and Nicholas Thornton who competed at the NSW Catholic Primary School Cross Country Carnival on Friday 15th June. The boys run extremely well and achieved some outstanding results. Congratulations in particular to Cameron Gill who has made it through to the Combine Schools Cross Country Carnival next term, after finishing in 6th position in his event. The enrolment period for Kindergarten 2013 is open. If your child turns 5 before the 31st July, 2012 and you would like them to start at Holy Family please contact the school office to pick up or have an enrolment pack sent to you. We look forward to welcoming you to Holy Family School in the near future. The school office can be contacted on 4773 4485 for an enrolment pack and will be happy to assist with your enquiry.
Mulgoa School News Students and staff at Mulgoa Public School are very sad to see Mrs Jenny Thompson, the principal leave. Mrs Thompson has been principal for nearly 4 years and has been much loved for her caring professional and very committed attitude. She is moving on to a larger school in Werrington and Sarah Dwyer, the president of the P & C says “Thank you, Mrs Thompson. We shall miss you but everyone at school wishes you well in your new position.” The new acting principal is Ms Janine Dwyer and Sarah says “We are excited to meet her and are looking forward to welcoming her. She is well known and respected in the teaching community and she will love our wonderful school.” Mrs Witherspoon also left last week on maternity leave so that is some big changes for a small school. The recent Country Fair was very successful with the P & C raising about $3,500. These funds will go towards furnishing and improving the new demountable classroom that has been brought to replace the old library building. The school are planning another Country Fair in October.

Young Careers Recognised The G l e n m o r e Park Cricket Club has built a proud history in its short existence, and just last month handed out another three ‘Career Bats’ which recognise longevity with the club. Earned only by players who play their entire junior career with the club, to-date the club has issued fewer than 30 such career bats. The last three to be added to that esteemed list in 2012 were Cameron Burke, Nathan Milgate and Rhyley Wilson [pictured]. Furthermore, Cameron & Rhyley also became only the second & third players in the clubs history to play 10 seasons in the junior ranks - quite an achievement and tremendous show of loyalty to the Redbacks. Many former juniors of the Glenmore Park Cricket Club have gone on to further achievements - the highest representation to date being John Hastings who’s become a regular member of the Australian Twenty20 & One Day International teams. Want to play cricket? Next seasons registrations are being taken during July & August for all Juniors & Seniors.
