First Day Tips For Parents Oran Park is a lucky suburb to have so many options when it comes to picking the right school for your child, but it can also be a nervous time for both child and parents, particularly when it’s their first time. Local Oran Park resident Laura Alarcon faced this challenge last year when her little girl Marley started Kindergarten at Oran Park Public School. Like every family going through this, both needed to adjust to such a big change. Looking back on the past year, we asked Laura what her top tips would be for other families who have children starting school. 1. Let them choose: Get them involved in picking their lunch box and drink bottles. Doing this gives them more input and they tend to look after them better. 2. Label Everything: In just one year, 2 jumpers and 4 hats were lost. By putting your child’s name on everything it helps with lost property and saves money by not having to replace items. 3. What’s for lunch: Let them help with making their lunch, this way they choose what they like and there will be less wastage at the end of the day. 4. Preparation: Get into a routine where they get clothes and bag ready the night before. This creates less stress in the mornings. 5. Let go: Laura’s final and most important tip is to let them go and have fun, lots of parents think they will be scared; but most kids are more ready than parents are to let go. The first day will always be the hardest. Pack the tissues, prepare the hugs and enjoy watching your child grow and embark on this exciting journey.  Marley’s first day with parents Laura & Cristian | Image Supplied

Like, Love and all that Fuzzy Stuff! Valentine’s Day, you either love it or hate it, are a hopeless romantic or a true cynic when it comes to the warm and fuzzy heart stuff. The fact is; about 90 per cent of the people in the age group of 18-24 and 45 per cent of people above 50; are said to celebrate the annual event in Australia on February 14th, and according to stvalentinesday.org surveys; men in Australia are more romantic and open about expressing their love compared to Australian women. So what will you be doing this Valentine’s Day? The heart filled day originated as a Western Christian liturgical feast day honouring one or more early saints named Valentinus, and is recognized as a significant cultural and commercial celebration in many regions around the world. Valentine's Day, also called Saint Valentine's Day or the Feast of Saint Valentine, is an annual holiday celebrated on February 14. The day first became associated with romantic love within the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the 14th century, when the tradition of courtly love flourished. In 18th-century England, it evolved into an occasion in which lovers expressed their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery, and sending greeting cards. Keep things simple when expressing your love, a simple card or a nice romantic dinner might be all they need. If you’re single why not treat yourself to one of your favourite things. If you would like to send your special someone a eco friendly message why not visit www.123greetings.com and send them an e-card. Spread the love, feel the tingles and enjoy the warm and fuzzy.

Happy New Year from all of us at The District Gazette FAITH – ST MARY MACKILLOP CATHOLIC PARISH ORAN PARK Article Written + Submitted by: Fr David Catterall MTh - Parish Priest @ St Mary MacKillop Catholic Parish Oran Park | P: 02 4648 2226 W: www.marymackillopparish.org.au A: 94 Oran Park Drive, Oran Park NSW 2570 Facebook: www.facebook.com/ oranparkparish Twitter: www.twitter.com/oranparkparish

Every year around this time people talk about their New Years’ Resolutions, areas of life where they want to improve in some way or things they hope to do better in 2017. Some people resolve to lose weight, eat healthier, pay off debt, quit smoking, spend more time with family or friends etc. May I propose that if you’re looking for a great New Year’s ‘spiritual’ resolution why not try Alpha. What is Alpha ? Alpha is an opportunity for anyone to explore the Christian faith in a relaxed manner. It’s low key, friendly and fun. It’s supported by all the main Christian denominations. While our Church here in Oran Park will be hosting Alpha please know that Alpha isn’t just open to those who might call themselves Catholic or even Christian. Alpha is for everyone and anyone. First there's Food... Every evening we start with food and a time to get to know each other. Then a Talk... Around 20-30 minutes long film. We explore the big issues around faith and unpack the basics of Christianity. Followed by Discussion... Probably the most important part of any Alpha: the chance to share thoughts and ideas on the topic, and simply discuss it in a small group. There's no obligation to say anything and there's nothing you can't say (seriously). It's an opportunity to hear from others and contribute your own perspective in an honest, friendly and open environment. We will be running Alpha over eight thought provoking weekly sessions. We’re calling our first Alpha evening A Taste of Alpha – come once and see if you like it. It will be held on Tuesday 21st February 2017 @ 7pm (finished by 9.15pm) at St Mary MacKillop Church, 94 Oran Park Dr, Oran Park (A map with

directions to the Parish centre can be downloaded from our website www.marymackillop.org.au. To RSVP just contact us on 46482226 or send an email to oranpark@dow.org.au As those who have already taken part in Alpha would testify, if you and I chose Alpha as one of our New Year’s resolutions, it could change our life. In a first for Oran Park Town there’s a brand new outdoor gym near Williamson St! There’s also some new open space to kick a ball around. Some of the bike path along Williamson St is now open, which follows Anthony Creek. Anthony Creek will remain fenced off for a while longer to give the plants a good chance to establish. Enjoy the new facilities!

Funding To Combat Local Crime Member for Camden Chris Patterson is encouraging community groups, council, businesses and organisations to apply for a grant up to $250,000 for ideas to stamp down local crime and antisocial behaviour and our boost local safety and pride. “The Community Safety Fund will invest in projects that address local crime hot spots and promotes safe and inclusive use of public space,” Mr Patterson said. “I know many people in our community have innovative ideas of how to make our community a safer place and I encourage them to take up this funding opportunity. “Crime is a social and financial burden that the NSW Government is committed to reducing. Minister for Justice and Police Troy Grant said we know there is always more that can be done to stamp out crime in our towns and suburbs and are working with the community to identify opportunities. “The reasons and consequences of crime in one region of NSW can be very different to other regions therefore it is important to invest in local solutions.” Attorney General Gabrielle Upton said the $10 million program over four years has already helped make local crime reduction ideas a reality. “This program has funded in community initiatives right across the state to enhance the work of Government and law enforcement agencies to combat crime.” The Community Safety Fund aims to reduce crime and antisocial behaviour through infrastructure and service delivery projects that address local crime hot spots, anti-social behaviour and promotes safe and inclusive use of public space and collaborative approaches to crime prevention and detection. BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT

At SunX Window Films we are proud to be a part of the greater Macarthur area, including Oran Park. Our customers regularly come to us asking about heat rejection. SunX films come in varying degrees of heat rejection, with a minimal being 38%, and the maximum being 80%. It is important for us to provide customers with options regarding the levels of light filtered into the home or office and the purpose of the film is met. The measurements are correct to provide the right fit. To ensure our product integrity and give our clients the best possible service, we arrange a check of the area to be filmed prior to application, as this process reduces any thermal breakage. My aim is to ensure that you, our customer, has a win/win experience. A great referral for our business is someone that you may know that has a heat or glare issue in their home or office and might be trying to reduce Air conditioning costs. If you are buying a new car, we can cut those aftermarket costs by half. If there is anything you require or simply need to ask. Give Mike a call. Your friendly 1 STOP SHOP.

The Country Show Returns

A little bit of Mount Panorama will descend on Luddenham Showground on the 18th and 19th of February as the historic grounds will rumble to the roar of the 500-horse power V8 donks as Holden and Ford Utes scream around the main arena. All the way from Adelaide, the Trackskill V8 Race Ute Show is unquestionably one of Australia’s most spectacular car stunt teams and has been seen all over the country. Another feature will see these daring drivers pit their talents again a horse, bike and supped up lawnmower in an obstacle course. Living up to its motto of ‘The Country Show’, the annual event takes place for the 113th time on the picturesque Luddenham Showgrounds. The event is run entirely by a small, but very hard working committee, many of whom can trace their family’s association with the show all the way back to the first one. The show will kick off each morning with horse classes held on the main arena, known through the equine industry as one of the major lead up events to the Sydney Royal Easter Show. There will be cowboys battling it out with rank bulls in the open bull ride including rodeo champions of the future in the steer and poddy calf rides. The main arena will feature the dog high jump contest, yank-a-ute for the adults and yank-a-buggy for the kids.

14

February 2017

www.oranparkgazette.com.au

If artistic ability is more your style, there will be classes of painting, photography, quilt making, flowers, homebrew, farm produce and even Lego building. Always renowned for the quality stage entertainment, there will be a talent quest, reptile displays with a difference, clowns and shearing demos. The main band this year is ‘Rough Stock’, back by popular demand, this great country-rock band hails from Riverstone. And, of course, the fireworks on Saturday night will be under the control of Foti’s, who are responsible for the Sydney Harbour New Year’s Eve Fireworks Show. Held in adjoining paddock will be the ever-popular sheep dog trials on Sunday. The day will also see the well-liked wood chopping contest. The stage program will include events such as ice cream eating, whip cracking and the Luddenham Country Kid hitting the stage. The Luddenham Show Committee would like to extend their sincere thanks to the 2017 Champion Sponsors; Workers Hubertus Country Club Luddenham and Catholic Cemetarys. Without their valued support and that of all the sponsors and volunteers, it would be impossible to run the show. For more information on ‘The Country Show’, find them on Facebook, visit their website or call 4773 4378. The Trackskill V8 Race Utes will be on show | Image Supplied

Unrivalled in the Macarthur Ask the majority of vendors what they want when it comes to selling their home and they’ll tell you – the highest possible price and complete peace of mind throughout the whole sales process. McLaren Real Estate prides itself on being able to deliver both. Director Lincon McLaren says the team behind his familyowned business is dedicated to looking after its clients and he believes ‘The McLaren Method’ of selling Real Estate and managing investment properties is unrivalled in the Macarthur. “And our results speak for themselves,” he says. “We have an active client database of buyers so when we list a new property, we can instantly match those buyers to our properties before we even start advertising. This can result in some very quick sales for vendors. As well as having many listings selling in the first week, we sold a property for a vendor in four weeks – this same vendor had previously listed her home with two other agents over a period of seven months with no offers,” says Lincon. “With another property we recently sold, we had offers coming in over the phone prior to the first open home. It was sold at the first open $50,000 above the asking price which well and truly exceeded the vendor’s expectations.” Having grown up in the Macarthur, Lincon says he and the team love helping people on their journey of buying and listing property and he’s excited about the number of new residents moving into the region as it expands. “It’s a pleasure to be able to help both vendors and purchasers on their personal journeys. And for new-comers to the area it’s great to be able to showcase to them the best the Macarthur has to offer,” he says. “With our close working relationship with Fairmont Homes NSW, we can now also offer people the option of a house and land package or brand new home.” Contact McLaren Real Estate on 4648 3777

FROM THEWORD EDITOR THE LAST Welcome to our first edition for 2017! I know the Christmas and New Year period raced by in a blur for many, and here we are, already facing what February has in store. The New Year period is always my favourite. A great time to refocus and set goals. The perfect opportunity to take onboard any challenges from years gone by, learn and grow from them. It's these challenges that have made us stronger and more determined to reach our newest goals. Time to set your New Year's Resolution straight from the get-go! If you didn't quite achieve last year's; here's another chance to wipe the slate clear, dust off your knees, and get back up again for another go at it! I stumbled across this saying recently, and wanted to share it with you; for how true it is. "Create a life that feels good on the inside; not one that just looks good on the outside." Enjoy your Community News.
