Jesse Ready to Take on the World Local golfing prodigy Jesse Linden is already making a name for himself in the sport and fast becoming a force to be reckoned with, all at the tender age of just 5 years old. “Jesse first picked up a golf club when he was 2. He showed a real keen interest at the age of 4 and, since turning 5, he has devoted his passion towards golf as almost a full time love” said Clint Linden, Jesse’s father. Jesse has already played in three US Kids Golf Sydney Season Tours in the 6 year old division, where he had wins. He placed 2nd in the New South Wales 6 year old age championship last year. Earlier this year, Jesse played in the US Kids Australian Open and finished 1st in the 5 year old division, 2nd in the 6 year old division and equal 8th in the 7 year old division against the best 7 year old and under golf players in Australia; and a long list of International players. He is currently preparing for the International World All Stars of Golf Championship in Las Vegas in July this year and is planning to play in the 2017 US Kids World Championships in the USA in August. Jesse is placed in the top 2 point scoring kids in the US Kids Golf Australian tours, which should mean that he will represent Australia in an international tournament against New Zealand next month. What makes this even more impressive is that he is playing against kids that are 1-2 years older than him. Jesse’s passion for golf includes training and practicing a minimum of 5 to 6 days a week; “He loves and is obsessed about golf. He loves meeting and making new friends, playing well and winning. His idols are Adam Scott and Tiger Woods” explained Clint. When asked what he wants to be when he grows up, Jesse has no hesitation; “I want to be a professional golfer. Number 1 in the world”. The Oran Park Gazette looks forward to following Jesse Linden’s journey and wishes him the best of luck.  Five year old golfing talent Jesse Linden | Image: Clint Linden

Afford Celebrates Harmony Day With Music At Oran Park The Australian Foundation for Disability (Afford) Lifestyle Centre in Oran Park was filled with musical celebration, festivities and fun last month, as 100 clients from Afford Lifestyle Centres across Sydney came together to celebrate Harmony Day through music and song. Afford Oran Park Lifestyle Centre played host to 100 Afford clients from Oran Park, Campbelltown, Green Valley, Lurnea, Chipping Norton, Canley Vale and Condell Park Lifestyle Centres to enjoy live music performances and interactive music play in celebration of cultural diversity and respect on Harmony Day. Afford clients and staff come from diverse and varied cultural backgrounds, which, according to Afford CEO, Steven Herald, is what helps the not-for-profit identify and understand the needs of clients. "We are proud of the rich cultures and different family backgrounds that make up our Afford community," Mr Herald explained. "We celebrate and welcome the different cultural traditions of our clients every day across all of our Lifestyle Centres, but it is particularly special to come together in one location at Oran Park to celebrate everyone's unique backgrounds on Harmony Day." Musical activities were facilitated by professional musicians from The Rhythm Village and incorporated live music performances and interactive singing, dancing, and playing of musical instruments such as guitar and percussion instruments. All activities were tailored to suit the different abilities and talents of Afford clients. All participants enjoyed the musical filled day with many Afford clients hitting some drums, shaking maracas, or dancing along to the beat of the music. Celebrating diversity is incorporated into many activities

across Afford Lifestyle Centres, with some Lifestyle Centres working with clients to choose a country of interest each month. During the month, Afford staff and clients research the chosen country's culture, language, cuisines and traditions. Traditional delicacies are made during cooking programs and art and craft activities can centre on the chosen country's culture. "Afford has been trusted for 65 years to offer person-centred care and support for people with disability. Our dedicated staff are constantly looking for ways to customise programs to the interests of clients and embrace diversity," Mr Herald commented. AFFORD is a registered charity and has been operating in NSW for 65 years providing a range of disability services to over 2,000 people with disability every day in Greater Western Sydney. For more information about Afford, visit www.afford.com.au or call 1300 233 673.

FAITH – NEWLIFE ANGLICAN ORAN PARK

Give It A Crack It’s a great Aussie saying isn’t it? It means, “have a go.” It was exactly what I was thinking when a group of my friends asked me, “Have you ever been cross country skiing?” My thinking when it comes to trying new things used to be, “why not, I might be a natural!” It only took about 30 seconds for the reality to become clear.. I stood on my skis, placed my 15kg pack on my back and fell sideways into the snow. Only another 11kms more to go! It turns out that I was in no way a natural at cross country skiing, but I quickly discovered that I loved it regardless. A bit of practice and I’d gone from plodding to something more smooth and coordinated. It was a sport that I’d never tried but with a bit of effort I’d found a new adventure. Easter is almost upon us and at NewLife Anglican this year we’re going with the theme, “give Jesus a crack this Easter.” Our hope at NewLife is that we’re growing the sort of Church that you might feel like visiting even if you’ve never been before. To give you as many opportunities as possible there’s four ways to meet with us across the Easter period. The first is our Easter Egg-stravaganza which is a fun-filled afternoon for kids opposite the sales centre in the middle of Oran Park held on Thursday 13th from 4pm. We’ll throw and catch eggs, run around with them on a spoon, and finish with a huge Easter egg hunt. That night we’ll be holding a service at the Church at 8pm which will be a lot quieter as we remember Jesus’ last meal. Then Good Friday will be at 10am in the Church with a great program for kids as we remember Jesus’ death on our behalf. Finally on Easter Sunday at 10am we’ll have a celebration service that reminds us Jesus conquered death and lives forever. If you’ve never been to Church before I’d say, “give Jesus a crack”.. you might be a natural! Yours In Christ - Stuart

We moved here one year ago on 10th March. Very pleased with everything here but could some one enlighten me why Oran Park Drive has never been completed the road is terrible like a donkey track? Hardly ever see workmen the chaos with traffic especially parents dropping and picking their children up is mind boggling. We had visitors come to see us recently and a comment was made, "When will your council finish the work needed on the road?" I agree when will it be finished? We have a beautiful sign on the hill saying Oran Park, let the job be finished and make us all proud to say we live here Name Withheld

Council recently considered a proposal to name roads in Oran Park after local residents who served in World War I. The Catherine Park Estate development spans 320 hectares and will accommodate approximately 3200 properties near the growing Oran Park town centre. Subdivision of the site is complete and construction on some of the properties has begun. “While our area is experiencing immense growth it is important that we remain connected to our heritage and pay tribute to our past,” said Mayor Lara Symkowiak. “The resilient and brave character of our founding community is demonstrated by the vast number of locals who volunteered to serve overseas during World War I,” Cr Symkowiak said. A total of 493 men and women connected with the Camden district volunteered for active service between 1914 and 1918 when the area’s population was approximately 3,000 people. There are 27 names of ex-servicemen proposed to be used to name the Catherine Park Estate streets and 14 names of people and places connected to the Oran Park Raceway, waterbodies, precious gems and metals. Council has consulted with the local Historical Society and if endorsed by Council, the names will be placed on public exhibition for 28 days. More information is available on Council’s website, www. camden.nsw.gov.au.

FAITH – ST MARY MACKILLOP CATHOLIC PARISH ORAN PARK Article Written + Submitted by: Fr David Catterall MTh - Parish Priest @ St Mary MacKillop Catholic Parish Oran Park | P: 02 4648 2226 W: www.marymackillopparish.org.au A: 94 Oran Park Drive, Oran Park NSW 2570 Facebook: www.facebook.com/ oranparkparish Twitter: www.twitter.com/oranparkparish

For many people – both Christian and non Christian alike – Easter is often associated with the sharing of Easter eggs and Hot Cross buns, and children often associate this time of year with the arrival of the Easter bunny. We might not realise it but all these “symbols of Easter” that we find on the shelves of our supermarkets find their origins in the Easter story proclaimed by Christians. For example, the Easter egg is a symbol of new life; and when a traditional chocolate Easter egg (not like those fancy ones today that contain trinkets and lollies) is broken open and the owner finds nothing inside the egg, this is a symbol of the empty tomb – in other words the tomb that was found empty by the disciples on that 1st Easter Sunday, because Jesus had risen from the dead. The Hot Cross bun also finds its origin in Christian symbolism; as the cross made of dough is a reminder of the cross upon which Jesus died. Once again this Easter, here in the Parish of St Mary MacKillop, Australia’s newest Catholic Parish, we will be having a number of celebrations and events, including Masses (Church services) on Easter Sunday morning at our northern Mass centre of St Mary Mother of God Church, (cc. Ingleburn and Dickson Rds) Leppington at 8am, and at our southern Mass centre in the grounds of the St Justin’s Catholic Primary School (94 Oran Park Dr, Oran Park) at 10am. As our 10am Easter Sunday Mass will be held under the school’s covered outdoor learning area (COLA) we are asked to bring a chair. More details about these events can be found on our website www.marymackillopParish.org.au Whatever Easter 2017 means to us, and whatever the joys and struggles we are facing, I pray that this time of year will be

Champion Paul Visits the Chamber

The Greater Narellan Chamber of Commerce recently played host to a special guest sporting superstar at their March meeting, with Cronulla Sharks Rugby League Legend Paul Gallen in attendance whilst also raising valuable funds for charity. The Chamber was very fortunate to have Paul Stevens (a former first grade rugby league player for St George and Cronulla and now Pastor for Lifehouse Church) do a Q&A session with Paul Gallen. The questions were about Paul’s leadership qualities, the ups and downs of being a Captain, his representative games and his overall achievements as a first grade player. It was an informative Q&A with some light hearted humour and members were captivated by how down to earth Paul was. “The feedback we received from our members was that Paul is a very real person. He was relaxed whilst being interviewed, he spoke very well and he was not afraid to answer any of the questions put before him. He gave honest answers and his attitude was very grounded. We had a networking break during which time Paul stood and practically had a picture with almost everyone in the room!” said Maria Sapienza, President of The Greater Narellan Chamber of Commerce. “After his interview, we conducted an auction with all monies raised going directly to the MS Research Centre in Campbelltown Hospital. $3,800 was raised through the auction of a Paul Gallen signed and framed Cronulla jersey, limited edition lithograph and a signed photo of Paul and ET” Maria added. The Greater Narellan Chamber of Commerce focuses on bringing local businesses together. They hold monthly meetings where their members are given the opportunity to not only network and promote their business, but to form a professional working relationship with their business peers across all industries.  Paul Gallen (centre and right) with members of the Greater Narellan Chamber of Commerce | Image: Neil Loomes (Imageology Photography)

Oran Park Netball 2017 Ready! This year marks the 5th Anniversary for the Oran Park Netball Club, with their new season commencing next month on the 6th of May. The season will start a little later than normal due to their venue moving from the netball courts at Kirkham to the new courts at the Narellan Sports Hub. The club also has 14 teams, ranging from Net Set Go, which is for children to learn basic netball skills in a non-competitive environment, all the way up to seniors. With most teams now full, they are still seeking coaches for some teams. It is compulsory for all coaches to complete an online coaching course and Oran Park Netball Club will reimburse half of the cost after this has been completed. If you are interested, call Chris Pilsworth on 0411 158144 or contact the club on Facebook. The local club’s goal this year is for all of their players to have fun, display sportsman like behaviour, make friends and continue to promote team work and physical activity through the sport of netball. They would be fibbing if they said that they didn’t want as many teams as possible to go through to the grand finals too. “One of the advantages of being a relatively small club is that we have been able to see how it has grown and developed into what it is today in a short time. The area of Oran Park is growing at an increasing rate and we have been able to support many young children to develop a lifelong passion for netball. It’s important as a community to encourage physical activity in our children and adults and what better way to do that than by joining a local netball team” said Rebecca McPhee, Club Secretary. Come and Celebrate the Luddenham Easter Festival Luddenham is a humble place, somewhere to listen to the birds and watch the clouds float by, a place that many of us call home. Although we are no ordinary bunch, we are made to feel most welcome. We know the Posties, the Publicans, the Baristas, the Butchers and our children go to school with yours. We shop local, support local and consider ourselves local. You see us all year round, although may not know what we are about, we reside at the corner of Park Road and Campbell Street. We are the Travelling Showmen of Australasia and not only do we provide fun and laughter for the community, we are part of your community. We all love rides, fairy floss and showbags and what better time of year than Easter to get together, young, old and young at heart to make memories. We know that the Easter Show can be expensive (especially when the bank account is still recovering from the Christmas holidays), so we want to bring the show to you. For the 5th year running, we will have a range of entertainment right to your door step, including rides, games, food and showbags. As a gift from us and our sponsors, there will also be a variety of free activities including an Easter egg hunt, door prize raffle, fireworks (Friday and Saturday at 7pm) and more! There will be no entrance fee plus parking is free and ample! So do as we do, support local family business, join in the fun and meet some of us. We will be open from the 14th to the 17th of April. PET CHAT

Oran Park Market Dates

Article Written + Submitted by: Jane Howard from University Veterinary Teaching Hospital Camden A: 410 Werombi Road, Camden | NSW | 2570 P: 4655 0777

Growing Up With Pets When chosen carefully, pets are a wonderful addition to any home and provide many well documented health benefits to adults and children alike. But did you know pet ownership can help your child’s development? Pets are a great way to teach children responsibility. Even very young children can help out with feeding or refreshing a water bowl. By teaching children the skills required to care for an animal such as bathing and grooming, exercising and taking them to the vet, they are learning an invaluable lesson in responsibility they can take into later life. This added responsibility can also build a child’s self-esteem. Caring for an animal also teaches children important nurturing skills with many studies showing children with pets are often more empathetic and have a more caring attitude towards others. Pets can also be very comforting to children when they feel sad or afraid. Research has found that patting or cuddling an animal can help people relax, providing children with coping strategies in difficult times. In addition to mental health, pet ownership can also be good for a child’s physical health. As many dogs require a daily walk or run, it can be a great motivator to get kids outdoors and exercising. Having a pet in the home can also teach children skills for being safe around animals. For example teaching your child about animal body language, how to identify threatening behaviour, and how and when to approach an animal, can all help to keep your child safe when they meet animals outside of the home. And last, but by no means least, having an animal is just plain fun. What better reason to add an animal to your family than to bring joy and happiness to your child? It’s important to remember when considering adding a pet to your home to do your homework first. It's easy to fall into the trap of ‘saving an animal’ that might not be suitable for your family. Not all dogs meet the needs of family pet so choose carefully and seek advice if unsure.

Flynnko Pty Ltd ABN: 65 601 734 472 trading as:

Welcome to April. And what a wet start it has been. From the scorching heat to flooded roads and causeways of late last month. The cooler weather has been a welcome relief, as has seeing the gardens and lawns replenished and nourished. A big 'shout-out' to all our service people, emergency services and volunteers; with their recent assistance to families across our community battling this extreme flooding. You all go the extra mile, thank you! This month we have a wonderful publication full of interesting news, stories and events that are local to you! With Easter around the corner, enjoy the opportunity to spend more time with those who mean the most; and less time with the chocolate! All good things in moderation. From us to you, 'Happy Easter'. "Just be real, it's not that complicated." For now, sit back with a cuppa in hand and enjoy your Community News.
