Let’s Get Our Paws Out, Camden

After a ruff few years, Council is excited to announce its much-loved, four-legged festival is back! Paws in the Park will return in 2022, to be held on Sunday 1 May at Camden Bicentennial Equestrian Park, 9am-1pm. The event, which will be made up of a combination of live and online activities, will include: • A two-kilometre dog walk; • Pet information and product stalls; • A special guest appearance; • Food and drink stalls; • An agility course for dogs; • Professional demonstrations; • Doggy competitions on the main stage; • Roving entertainment; • Activities for kids; • A pet photo-booth • An inclusive space; and • More! The online component will include: • Colouring in competition; and • Online competition to submit photos of your pet in a range of categories. Mayor of Camden, Cr Therese Fedeli, said she was excited to have the event back up and running in-person. “I am so excited our event is able to go ahead this year, as it did prior to COVID-19,” Cr Fedeli said. “Of-course all restrictions and guidelines are being followed, but it is nice to know we will be able to come together as a community, with all intentions of walking around the market-style event and allowing our furry friends to interact with others.

“Over the past two years I am sure our pups have been doing lots of walking and learning how to behave on their leads. It will be great to see the community having

some fun, dressing up their dogs for the competitions. “Whether you attend the in-person event or tune in to Council’s online program, I hope everyone can get involved in one way or another. There are many educational resources available this year, so I encourage you to learn something new!” Online competition details will be announced on Council’s Facebook page. It offers highly effective free or low-cost support for mental health, physical and sexual health, work and study, and alcohol and other drug use. The new centre, funded in the 2021-22 Budget as part of the Government’s $2.3 billion National Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Plan, will ensure that young people in Narellan and surrounding areas can access the vital support they need to support their mental health and wellbeing.

Federal Member for Hume Angus Taylor said that the new centre would be a critical resource for the young people of Narellan and surrounding suburbs. “After the challenges of the last few years, looking after our mental health is more important than ever. By providing easy access to expert support in a confidential, welcoming environment, this new headspace centre will play an essential role in keeping the young people in our community safe and well”. Sweating for a Good Cause

Harrington Park resident Jake Brightwell has organised Sweat 4 Camden, a local fundraising event to raise money for community groups and businesses affected by the recent floods, this month. The event will take place on Sunday 10th April at 9:00am at Smeaton Grange Strength and Conditioning. It will feature 4 fitness events, with each lasting 10 minutes. The competition will see competitive and non-competitive options. Entry into the competition is $80 per team in teams of 2. Activities will be inclusive and involve movements that the wider community can do. The competition includes rowing, bike, sled push and wall ball fitness-based activities. Also on hand will be a live DJ, raffles, BBQ, coffee van and fitness challenges. “I saw the flooding in Camden and felt for the members of the community that were affected. Local groups and businesses have been devastated by this. I wanted to help any way I could by kick starting a recovery,” said Jake. The inspirational local has previously held a fundraiser to assist those affected by the Picton floods a few short years ago. Jake, who is the Owner of Hype Fitness Outdoor Group Training, explained that Sweat 4 Camden is a collective effort amongst several fitness groups. “Atho Fit, G3 Narellan, Fitness 2 Suit U, Jet Fitness, Semprose Pilates and Soular Energy Outdoor Fitness are coming together to help with this event. I am grateful for their support”. “A big thank you to Smeaton Grange Strength and Conditioning for donating their gym for the event” he continued. Sponsors, donations, and volunteers are wanted on the day. To register, visit https://bit.ly/Sweat4camden. For more information, email Sweat4camden@gmail.com.

Thank you to the schools for their support. For us to deliver the services, I am very appreciative to our sponsors whose financial help enables us to produce a great result” Iain explained. PARENTS CORNER

Preventing Purchases

Unwanted

In-App

Many parents now find unexplained transactions on their credit cards, thanks to the rise of “in-app purchases”. In-app purchases refers to buying goods from inside of an application on a mobile device. Most children’s apps and games are free to download but make their profit this way. A recent study found that 95% of games targeted at children have at least one advertisement. Despite this, children are not developmentally equipped to respond to manipulative marketing strategies used to push in-app purchases. Advertising can be positioned seamlessly into gameplay, making it difficult for children to know the difference. Many children don’t even know that they are spending real money in these games. Emotional strategies can particularly be difficult for children. On Roblox, many in-game items are advertised as “for a limited time only”, creating pressure to buy now or miss out. Peer pressure also contributes heavily to Roblox purchases as the game has a hot topic in the school yard. While regulators get to grips with the issues, there are unfortunately few protections for parents who find themselves out of pocket for their children’s in-app purchases. Parents are often refused refunds by their financial institutions, the app’s carrier Apple Store or Android Play Store, or the app’s creator. Therefore, prevention is better than cure! It is important to ensure you are supervising children’s use of devices, especially for children under 5 years old. Children need support and guidance to discern and manage online advertising. It is important for children to express their wants, but we all must learn to manage the disappointment of not getting something we had our heart set on. Make sure you lock or set up two-step authentication for inapp purchases on any devices used by children. If you have an iPhone or iPad, you can lock in-app purchases through your App Store settings. On Android devices, you can configure the settings in Google Play so that all purchases require twostep authentication, meaning you will receive an email or SMS requiring you to finalise a purchase. The Oran Park Gregory Hills Chargers JRLFC are primed and ready to charge in the 2022 Group 6 Junior Rugby League (JRL) competition. Kicking off the new season this month, the Chargers currently have 22 teams and are still taking registrations. They are focussed on the Under 13’s and Under 14’s Girls League Tag teams. Their junior players make up teams in the Under 6’s through to the Under 14’s Girls League Tag. “Last season, we had strong numbers during COVID. However, COVID did shorten our season. Growth within the club is still good, but has slowed this year,” said Scott Gettings, President of Oran Park Gregory Hills Chargers JRLFC to the Oran Park Gazette. It is hoped that the new season will be completed, with little or no disruptions. The kids are excited to take the field soon. “This year, at the club we are looking forward to our first international team with the Under 13’s and our Girls League Tag is back after not being able to field a team for 4 years” Scott smiled. The Chargers are still taking registrations for the upcoming season. Players can register online at www. playrugbyleague.com. “If you would like more information about Oran Park Gregory Hills Chargers JRLFC, please contact us through our Facebook page by searching ChargersJRLFC” ended Scott.

The Shepherd Centre Opens in Oran Park NDIS provider, The Shepherd Centre is improving access to hearing services for South Western Sydney children and families, after opening its latest state of the art facility in Oran Park. South West Sydney is the fastest growing region of NSW, by 2040 over 550,000 will call the area home, 1 in 1,000 children will be diagnosed with some form of hearing loss, and The Shepherd Centre’s new site will allow these children to be closer to early intervention treatment than ever before. “We are thrilled to be opening our doors to the new facility to help children and families in the South West Sydney area. This, in conjunction with our Liverpool centre, will see 60 children with hearing loss per year, growing to 100 per year as the population grows, benefit from world class care in the comfort of their own area,” says Jim Hungerford, CEO of The Shepherd Centre. The opening of the new facility will see five therapy rooms, a world standard audiology booth used for Cochlear Implant testing, specially designed clinical and education areas. Clinicians and patients will have access to world class hearing support equipment and the site is fully accessible for people with disabilities including mobility, vision and hearing loss. “Children with hearing loss need to get their support absolutely as early as possible in their life because otherwise if their brains don't get the right stimulation and now with the opening of Oran Park centre, The Shepherd Centre will be able to help more children develop fundamental skills,” adds Hungerford. The new centre has also created seven new jobs alongside 10 local volunteer positions to engage with the world-class programs that The Shepherd Centre offers. In late 2020, the NSW Government through the South West Health District committed $2.5 million dollars to help The Shepherd Centre establish the site, to ensure that families in South West Sydney have access to hearing services. This funding accompanies the philanthropical donations from local businesses including Sargeants Pies. The Oran Park facility is located at 1.03 level 1, 90 Podium Way Oran Park NSW 2570 (TRN House) and will be open from 8.00am to 5.00pm Monday to Friday. r Dignitaries and guests at the opening | Image: Aisha Nicole Photography Article: Seven Communications/The Shepherd Centre

Plans Progress for New and Upgraded Schools in Camden The NSW Government is continuing its investment in schools across South Western Sydney with plans progressing on Stage 2 of Gledswood Hills Public School and the new primary school in Gregory Hills. The projects will address population growth and enrolment demand in the South Western Sydney growth area. Member for Camden Peter Sidgreaves said he was delighted to announce that the construction tender for the Stage 2 upgrade at Gledswood Hills Public School has now closed. “Stage 2 formed part of the original State Significant Development (SSD) application which was approved and enabled delivery of the school in 2020,” Mr Sidgreaves said. “This means that construction can start once the detailed design phase is finished and the main works contract is awarded, which we anticipate will be mid-2022”. The project will deliver an additional 20 flexible learning spaces and an expansion of the existing on-site car parking to 75 spaces. Stage 1 included a hall, library, canteen and 24 classrooms. Mr Sidgreaves also said that initial planning stage for a new primary school in Gregory Hills is now complete. “The next step is to formally commence the statutory planning approval process for the delivery of new primary school in Gregory Hills, delivering state of the art facilities for the future students.” The school, which will be located at Gregory Hills Drive, will include fit-for-purpose learning spaces and core facilities for up to 1,000 students, supporting the growing area. Minister for Education Sarah Mitchell said she was delighted to see that both Stage 2 of Gledswood Hills Public School and the planning for the new primary school in Gregory Hills are progressing. “I’m proud that we are continuing our record investment in school infrastructure across NSW. We are working hard to provide schools with modern facilities designed specifically for their community,” Ms Mitchell said. The NSW Government is investing $7.9 billion over the next four years, continuing its program to deliver 215 new and upgraded schools to support communities across NSW. This is the largest investment in public education infrastructure in the history of NSW. r Gledswood-Hills-Upgrade-Artist-Impression | Article + Image: Peter Sidgreaves MP

Oran Park Probus Club

Probus is a social group for retired and semi-retired people in the community, offering the opportunity to get together with like-minded people, make new friends and have some fun. Oran Park Probus Club Meetings have resumed for the year at Wests Lakeside Golf Club at Camden. The Annual General Meeting was held early in March and the new Committee is due to meet soon. Part of the discussions will concern activities and events for the year ahead. Last year many activities were curtailed due to Covid-19 ‘lockdowns’, but we are hopeful that won’t occur this year. Despite a couple of heavy rain showers, 22 members enjoyed an observation car rally in February. The last stop was for lunch and a lot of chatting and ‘catching up’. Regular coffee and chats, pub lunches, fine dining, craft sessions, movies and other activities feature on our calendar of events this year. More will be added as the Committee members discuss ways to put fun back into our lives this year. Oran Park Probus Club meets on the first Tuesday of the month (except January and November). Meetings commence at 10.00am, with a talk from a speaker whose topics will appeal to our members, from the serious and educational to lighthearted entertainment. Lunch together at the Club is a social event for many of the members after the meetings. If you would like to find out more about Oran Park Probus Club, please come to a meeting. Visitors are always welcome. For further details, please contact the Secretary Ph: 0410 758755 or email: secretary.oranparkprobusclub@gmail.com. r March Speaker and President | Image Supplied

FAITH – NEWLIFE ANGLICAN ORAN PARK

Article Written + Submitted by: Lead Pastor Stuart Starr @ New Life Anglican Church W: newlifeanglican.org.au E: stuart@newlifeanglican.org.au A: Cnr Central Avenue + Marcus Loane Way, Oran Park NSW 2570

A Matter of Death and Life The Easter story is very different from Christmas. At Christmas, we see a life just begun, a helpless baby in a manger, and a virgin mother. We see shepherds and animals, silent nights, and starry skies filled with angels rejoicing. Easter is very different. On Good Friday, we find a cross in place of a manger, blackened skies, a silent man condemned, angry crowds and weeping in place of rejoicing. How can that be called ‘good’ in any way? Christians love Easter because it shows, not only that the living God takes sin seriously, but that He takes sin’s costs upon Himself. Easter tells us that it is Jesus who dies for the sins of the world. The innocent one for the guilty. The brutal truth is that my sin leads to Jesus’s crucifixion under Roman nails. Good Friday reminds us that no one is ‘holier than thou’. Every sinner needs a Saviour. So, Easter is certainly a matter of death - Jesus’s death in my place. Easter Sunday brings rejoicing after the tears. Sunday is about resurrection. On that first Easter Sunday, the crucified Jesus was met, greeted, embraced, and worshipped as fully, authentically, and undeniably alive. Just as His death opened the door for my sins to be paid, so too His resurrection opens the way for all who trust in Him to find life beyond the grave. This Easter, you’re invited to join us at NewLife on Good Friday at 9:30am up at the church (with the rainbow tower). Then at 8am on Easter Sunday, you’ll find us outdoors at Oran Park Anglican College. Our service will be followed by a free BBQ brekkie as we celebrate the best news ever. Easter is truly a matter of death and life and you’re invited to find the hope and freedom it offers. FAITH – ST MARY MACKILLOP CATHOLIC PARISH ORAN PARK

Article Written + Submitted by: Fr David Catterall MTh - Parish Priest @ St Mary MacKillop Catholic Parish Oran Park P: 02 4648 2226 W: www.marymackillopparish.org.au A: 94 Oran Park Drive, Oran Park NSW 2570 Facebook: www.facebook.com/oranparkparish Twitter: www.twitter.com/oranparkparish For Christians, “Easter is not so much a day, or even a Season, but it’s a way of living”. While some may not realise or acknowledge the link, the call to live as ‘Easter People’ is reflected in the sharing of Easter eggs and Hot Cross buns, for both these “symbols of Easter” find their origins in the Easter story. For example, the Easter egg is a symbol of new life; and when a traditional chocolate Easter egg (not like those fancy ones today that contain trinkets and lollies) is broken open and the owner finds nothing inside the egg, this is a symbol of the tomb that was found empty on that 1st Easter Sunday, because Jesus had risen from the dead. The Hot Cross bun also finds its origin in Christian symbolism; as the cross made of dough is a reminder of the cross upon which Jesus died. Once again during this Easter Season, here in the parish of St Mary MacKillop – one of Australia’s newest Catholic parishes, we will be having a number of celebrations and events, including Masses (church services) at our northern Mass centre of St Mary Mother of God Church, (cc. Ingleburn and Dickson Rds) Leppington, and at our southern Mass centre (94 Oran Park Dr) Oran Park. More details about these Easter Season events can be found on our website www.marymackillopparish.org.au. Whatever Easter 2022 means to us, and whatever the joys and struggles we are facing, I pray that this time of year will be another opportunity for all of us, both individually and with family and friends, to celebrate the great gift of life.

Kyle & Jackie O Set One Lucky Couple Up for Life Last month, KIIS 1065’s Kyle & Jackie O set one lucky couple up for life, giving away KIIS 1065’s biggest ever competition prize: a brand new fourbedroom home, new car, and $30,000 worth of furniture. The atmosphere was filled with excitement and anticipation when The Kyle & Jackie O Show kicked off at 6am, broadcasting live from Julia Reserve in Oran Park Town. Hundreds of KIIS 1065 listeners gathered, armed with their prize keys, expecting the unexpected and already in the mood to party with Australia’s biggest radio show. Listeners had been competing to win keys on-air since January and each waited eagerly to see if they held the winning key to the life-changing prize. The lucky winners were two teachers, Jessica and Brandon Kattic from Colyton, NSW. Jessica had won five keys and after her first two failed to open the door on site, she put her third key in, and an explosion of streamers and confetti went off as the shocked pair instantly became brand new homeowners. Kyle Sandilands said, “Last time we set somebody up for life it was back in 2019 and it was epic. The atmosphere today has been electric, and everyone was in the mood to party. It’s a massive giveaway and I’m excited that we were able to do it again!” “This is a life changing prize, and it feels so good to be saving a lucky person the worry of a mortgage or paying rent. I love that we can make a positive difference in somebodies’ life,” Jackie O added. Jessica said of the moment she realised they’d won, “It was complete shock, honestly it still feels like a dream.” Brandon described what the prize means to them, “This will give us a life. We have been struggling, we are currently living with our baby daughter in one bedroom in my mum and dad’s house and this feels like a second chance at life.” KIIS 1065 partnered with Wisdom Homes and Oran Park Town to give away a brand-new home in Sydney’s South West, complimented by a BYD Atto 3 electric car ready in the driveway and $30,000 worth of furniture from April & Oak. Oran Park Town will eventually be home to 25,000 residents living a modern lifestyle, in comfort, incorporating the latest in-home design and where sustainability is a reality. It is fast becoming a community like no other in the south west of Sydney and offers the benefits of contemporary amenities with both mall and main street shopping, civic facilities complemented by a town square that will be the energy source of this new community. Catch The Kyle & Jackie O Show weekdays from 6am on KIIS 1065. v Feature Article [Cover] The lucky winners with Kyle & Jackie O [Above] The event at Julia Reserve in Oran Park Town | Images/Article: The Comms Department/KIIS 1065 (ARN)

FROM THEWORD EDITOR THE LAST As we head into April, our thoughts go out to all those that were affected by the recent floods. No one could have predicted the devastating conditions that we endured. One thing is for sure and that is that we’ll continue to come together with strength and resilience to recover. This month is a time for both Easter and ANZAC Day. Important times to share with our loved ones, in reflection, hope and happiness. We continue to be amazed at the members of our community who inspire us all every day when sharing their stories. Like us, you’re probably scratching your heads wondering how we’re already onethird of the way through 2022. The cooler weather is coming, reminding us to rug up soon. Thank you for continuing to support our advertisers and small business. We couldn’t do this without you! Enjoy your Community News and as devastating as it has been, Dolly Parton once said, “If you want the rainbow, you gotta’ put up with the rain”.
