Leisure Centre Prestigious Award
Wins
Australia’s next Olympic swimming champion could come from the Camden area after Mount Annan Leisure Centre was awarded the AUSTSWIM NSW Swim School of Excellence – Large award. The prestigious award is the highest presented in Australia for aquatic education excellence. Mount Annan Leisure Centre’s programs are based on learning outcomes that enhance personal knowledge, skill and understanding of aquatic environments for safer participation in, on and around water. This coupled with initiatives the centre implements to engage, interact, and educate the community for safer aquatic participation made them impossible to beat. Mayor of Camden, Cr Therese Fedeli said the award recognised a fantastic swim school at Mount Annan Leisure Centre. “Mount Annan Leisure Centre has long been seen as having a successful swim school in an impressive facility and this award cements it as industry leading, right here in our local community,” Cr Fedeli said. “The facility is a real community asset and is the perfect place to exercise, socialise and participate in sport and fitness activities. “Council is committed to providing our residents with facilities to excel in anything they choose and I congratulate the team at Mount Annan Leisure Centre for helping our community achieve its goals.” This is the second award in as many years for Mount Annan Leisure Centre, after its Swim School received the Australian Swim School Association (ASSA) National Award for Excellence in Inclusion last year. Mount Annan Leisure Centre manager Ryan O’Loughlin said the team was proud and grateful to be recognised. “Whilst Mount Annan Leisure Centre

has always had a reputation as having a wonderful Swim School program, the way that the program has bounced back after two lockdowns has been extraordinary,” Mr O’Loughlin said. “The number of enrolments has steadily grown, even in winter, and receiving an award such as this is a true reflection of the wonderful work the instructors, wet deck supervisors and management team do on a daily basis. “Being able to have a positive impact in providing safe and enjoyable lessons for such a large and diverse number of enrolments is extremely rewarding and it’s a credit to everyone involved,” he said. The Y NSW has managed Mount Annan Leisure Centre for over 16 years on behalf of Camden Council. Selective School Changes Ensure Fair Access For All More gifted students from disadvantaged backgrounds will be able to reach their potential thanks to changes to the selection process for opportunity classes and selective high schools. The change follows the NSW Government’s 2018 review of access to opportunity classes and selective high schools. The review found that certain groups of high potential students were missing out on places because of their low socio-economic background, Aboriginal background, because they had a disability, or because they lived in a rural or remote area. Minister for Education and Early Learning Sarah Mitchell said the new process will reserve up to 20 per cent of places for students from these four equity groups. “A student’s academic potential should not be determined by where they live, their background, or their disability,” Ms Mitchell said. “We are helping to address the unintended barriers that prevent gifted students from having fair and equitable access to opportunity classes and selective high schools. “Every student who gains placement in an opportunity class or selective high school will deserve their place and have the academic talent to fulfil their potential.” The combination of current acceptance rates of students from identified equity groups and the new reserved places will ensure selective schools are more reflective of the proportions of equity groups enrolled in NSW public schools. If there are not enough applications to a particular school from students from

under-represented groups or if these students do not meet the minimum performance requirements, the held places will be offered to general applicants based on their highest performance on the placement test. The changes will be implemented this year for 2023 enrolments. r Article: Minister for Education Sarah Mitchell
People With Disability Urged To Get Booster With a new wave of COVID-19 cases continuing to increase across the state, people with disability are encouraged to get the latest COVID-19 vaccine booster dose. Minister for Families and Communities and Minister for Disability Services Natasha Maclaren-Jones said people with disability can be more vulnerable to the harmful effects of COVID-19. “Protecting people with disability is vital as they can be at greater risk of developing serious illness if they become infected,” Mrs Maclaren-Jones said. “Vaccination is readily available at GPs and pharmacies and we are urging everyone to book in without delay.” COVID-19 booster doses are recommended for anyone 16 years and older who had their last dose of a primary course at least three months ago. The COVID-19 vaccine can be taken at the same time as the influenza vaccine, which people with disability are also being urged to take. While the free flu vaccination program in NSW ends on 17 July 2022, those considered to be at higher risk of severe illness from influenza remain eligible for a FREE flu vaccine beyond this date, under the National Immunisation program. This includes: • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people from six months of age • Children from six months to under five years of age • People with serious health conditions (including severe asthma, diabetes, cancer, immune disorders, obesity, kidney, heart, lung or liver disease) • Pregnant women • People aged 65 and over. The NSW Government is also providing up to 7.9 million rapid antigen tests (RATs) to people with disability and other vulnerable community members with the program recently expanded to 31 October 2022. Charging On
Residents and visitors will be charging on down to use the new electric vehicle charging stations at Camden’s Oxley Street carpark, Oran Park Library and Narellan Library carparks, that are now charged and ready for use. Delivered under stage three of Council’s COVID-19 Support Package, the charging facilities will be accessible to the community and are located in dedicated electric vehicle (EV) charging car spaces. Mayor of Camden, Cr Therese Fedeli, said she was excited to be providing electric charging stations to the community and tourists. “Electric vehicles are the way of the future and we’re committed to building a cleaner and more sustainable community for our residents to enjoy,” she said. “These six public charging stations are the first Council has installed in the Camden area. “Not only will they be convenient for our residents, but they have been installed in locations to help encourage visitors to enjoy our town centres and incredible community facilities while their car is charging. “The EV charging stations will be offered free of charge and will be suitable for most electric vehicles”. Council’s $113.8 million Stage Three COVID-19 Support Package includes 65 projects and programs to be delivered by 2023/24 and is focused on getting the Camden community back on its feet, with a range of exciting projects and programs. Council is proud to invest $130.6 million across the three stages of our COVID-19 Community Support Package to support residents and local businesses suffering the shock of COVID-19. It’s estimated all three stages will boost Camden’s economy by up to $221.7 million and generate up to 507 new jobs. The Grego Raises Funds in Flood Appeal The Gregory Hills Hotel has long been at the forefront of the Macarthur community when it comes to donating and supporting local charities and sporting clubs since its opening in July 2016. As a business, they like us, have witnessed the devastation that the recent floods have caused local families and businesses in the Camden area. To pitch in and help, the hotel teamed up with local charity Big Yellow Umbrella last month to donate $1 from every local beer sold over three days (Friday to Sunday). Through their social channels of over 20,000 followers combined, they encouraged their patrons to come in and “raise a beer” to help raise much needed funds for the flood affected families of Camden. “We are thrilled with the support we received over the weekend for our “Raise a Beer” campaign although not surprised at all that our local community wanted to pitch in and help us raise funds for this important cause” said Licensee and Macarthur local John Payne. “We raised $4,812 over that weekend, which will go towards helping families get back on their feet after such a horrible few weeks and months” he said. This is not the first time The Hotel has raised funds for the flood appeals. In April 2022, they teamed up with another local charity Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard to raise a similar amount for them to help replace household items that were damaged or lost due to the floods.

Local Club Producing Australian Champions Harrington Park Scorpions Softball Club is a club on the rise, having recently produced their second female athlete to represent Australia in the sport. Gabbie Plain, who plays softball for the University of Washington Huskies, represented Australia at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Chantelle Ladner made her debut in the green and gold, representing the Australian Open Women’s Team at the World Games in Birmingham USA in June. Both Gabbie and Chantelle are former local juniors who got their start in the sport at the Scorpions. “Just to name these two amazing athletes at the elite top level of their sport, we are seeing a growth in our representative level for NSW and Australia in our junior ranks” said Greg Trevena, Club Secretary of Harrington Park Scorpions Softball Club. The Scorpions had over 130 male and female players registered last season and they continue to grow. This included players of all levels and experience. With registrations opening soon, the club are looking ahead to a big year. “We are looking forward to a season where floods and COVID are behind us and getting outside to have some fun in the Camden area” he explained to the Oran Park Gazette. The local club believes a big part of their success is creating an environment for their members to enjoy themselves. “We are known as the fun club, promoting an inclusive community that promotes growth and enjoyment. Our club has several coaching members, administrators and athletes getting involved in the Harrington Park community” replied Greg. “Our numbers continue to grow, with those having the opportunity to represent Macarthur, NSW, and Australia, whilst travelling the country and abroad. This is an amazing achievement for a single club” he added. Sharing Life’s Moments Oran Park local Thomas Annetts has an eye for detail when it comes to photography. The talented photographer has shared his love of the profession by creating ‘The Big Shoots’, a monthly event that brings models and photographers together. Thomas, who has been a self-taught photographer for over 14 years, first picked up a camera in his teens. “My parents bought me a point and shoot camera in my teens, and I developed a passion for photography. I started off photographing landscape, and wildlife and progressed to portrait and event photography” he said to the Oran Park Gazette. As the owner of Snapshot Imagery, Thomas range of work is diverse and varied. “I wouldn't say I specialise in one particular area of photography, but more of a one stop shop for photography. I do everything from events, nightlife, weddings, products, food, and models” explained Thomas. Thomas’ project, The Big Shoots, is a monthly based event where he and his team run a big shoot with stunning locations and themes at affordable prices for both models and photographers. “The Big Shoots is a great way for photographers and models of any skill level to build or start building a portfolio in this industry. But most importantly, it is a fun filled day and you get to meet new people, share ideas and techniques. The Big Shoots has been running for over 6 years and, within the last 2 years, we have now teamed up with Macarthur Camera House for every event” he stated. His work enables him to travel all around the local area, discovering the beauty that the Macarthur has to offer. “My favourite place to shoot in the Macarthur area is in Cobbitty and also Mount Annan Botanical Gardens” Thomas added. He believes that there are two things to consider when taking the perfect photo. “Lighting and composition are probably the two most important components to taking the perfect photo” he ended. For more information about Thomas and his work, visit www.snapshotimagery.net or www.thebigshoots.com.

More Than $11,000 Raised for Charity Through Boots n’ Beats
How To Say “No” To Your Child Limits and rules keep children safe and help them grow into responsible, moral, and thoughtful adults. They also help children develop behavioural and impulse control. There are absolutely times when you have to say “No” to your child, but as every parent knows, this is not always simple or pleasant. Every child needs to work out who they are as a unique individual. This is called ‘autonomy’ and it’s about deciding what you want and don’t want, like and don’t like, and making choices accordingly. Children aged between 18 months and 3 years especially need to flex their ‘autonomy’ muscles and that’s why we often hear a whole lot of “NO” from toddlers! At the same time, everything in a child’s life is largely decided for them – when and what they eat, what activities they do, who they see, when they sleep, and so on. As adults, we can sometimes forget this. This is not to say that children should be left to their own devices, there’s a good reason why responsible adults are in charge. But what we can do is support children to make choices where appropriate and safe. Consider your child’s age and stage of development when offering choices. For younger children, open-ended choices can be overwhelming, so start with offering 2 or 3 options. For example, we can offer a 2-year-old girl the option to wear her hair out or in a ponytail. For older children and young people, you will need to offer some ‘brain storming’ to support their decision-making process. Sit down together, identify the all options, discuss the pros and cons of each, and then allow your child or teen to pick the best solution. Balance out your “No”s with “Yes”s. Imagine if all you heard was “No”, you would feel pretty fed up too! We can get in a habit of automatically dismissing a child’s requests. Instead, try using a ‘yes with conditions’, for example, “yes, we can read a story after you’ve brushed your teeth”. When children are given plenty of developmentally appropriate opportunities to make decisions about the things that affect them, they don’t need to fight us on every “No”.

Council is thrilled to announce $11,900 was raised at Boots n’ Beats, to go to flood relief efforts throughout the Camden area. The money was raised through the sale of the Boots n’ Beats branded cowboy hats and the sausage sizzle hosted on the night and will be split evenly between three very special charity partners – Big Yellow Umbrella; Mother Hubbard's Cupboard; and Turning Point Camden. The inaugural event was held on Saturday 18 June, 3-9pm, down at Camden Town Farm and was Council’s first major event since before the pandemic. Mayor of Camden, Cr Therese Fedeli, said the event was a huge success. “Between the pandemic, lockdowns, and wild weather events, we’ve just had postponement after postponement of late. It had been way too long since we were able to get together as a community and enjoy one of the great events Council puts on,” Cr Fedeli said. “And what better way to kick-start our event calendar again with a brand-new event! It was terrific to see people really getting into the spirit of Boots n’ Beats. I saw everyone enjoying the line dancing, roving entertainment, animal nurseries, craft activities and the many food and drink stalls available at the event. “But the true showstoppers were the amazing talent we had on display – Grace Amos, NeillyRich, Tori Darke, Southbound XO, Shannon Noll and, of course, Adam Brand. To say we were wowed is an understatement. Their talent, stage presence, electric energy, and pure love for what they do was inspiring. I’d like to say a huge thank you to the amazing talent, as well as all the food and product vendors, who made the night unforgettable. “We were truly overwhelmed by the interest and attendance we had for this event. We had more than 15,000 attend throughout the day and, at about 5.30pm, we had to make the difficult decision to stop letting people in. I understand that was disappointing for some people, and we apologise for the inconvenience this caused. “But I always like to look at the silver lining in everything – those who were unable to get into the event headed into Camden Town Centre and spent time at our local businesses there. Bringing people back into Camden Town Centre is something we try to achieve regularly, to make sure our fantastic long-standing businesses there are well loved and supported. It was great to hear they were busy all night! “I know staff always take feedback on board to help create bigger and better events in the future, so this was another opportunity to learn and improve”. r A big success for all | Image: Brett Atkins | Article: Camden Council
After-School Program Brings Coding Alive
Construction Milestone for The George
The George Centre, a new medical facility currently under construction in Gregory Hills, reached an important milestone recently with the topping out ceremony taking place. Officials on hand at the ceremony included Dr Andrew Chang - Chairman of the Board, Acurio, Scott Fowler - Group CEO, Acurio, Dr Robert Lin - Chief Strategy Officer, Acurio, Tony Sukkar AM - Group Managing Director, BuildCorp and Andrew Boustred - Group Development Director, HealthCo. Due to open in mid-2023, The George Centre will complement Sydney's Southwest exemplary public health system in supporting local healthcare needs. The maternity, paediatric and surgical hospital is set to attract and retain local medical talent in NSW’s fastest growing region. The George Centre is the brainchild of Western Sydney born and raised Dr Andrew Chang and has been so named in honour of his late father. “We are a NSW owned company led by healthcare professionals. With our partners BuildCorp and HealthCo, this has been carefully planned over the past 8 years. It’s a significant investment in families and clinicians in a young, rapidly growing, and full of potential region. We genuinely want to make a difference as we see the area develop.” “Our mission is simple – we want to transform local people’s lives”. The George Centre will be the only private paediatric facility in NSW. The 5-storey building will have state-of-the-art operating theatres, specialist maternity delivery suites, radiology, pathology, endoscopy, other allied health services and support services such as pharmacy and a multilevel car park. Local students are in for a treat with two coding clubs being run as afterschool library programs at Oran Park. Code Club gives students the opportunity to create and code simple programs and games, with the LEGO Mindstorm session helping 11-15 year olds develop their enthusiasm for STEM skills, by computer coding and creating projects using robots. Mayor of Camden, Cr Therese Fedeli said the after-school program would offer multiple benefits to local students. “Council is passionate about giving local young people an opportunity to learn and develop their skills and it is important to do that from a young age,” Cr Fedeli said. “Our libraries host a variety of programs throughout the year to offer people of all ages the chance to expand their knowledge and this is no different. “Coding makes it easier for people to create computer software, games, apps and websites and it is amazing that our local young people will have the chance to learn more about this at our libraries. “I encourage those interested to register now to not miss out.” The Code Club and LEGO Mindstorm will be held at Oran Park Library through Term 3 with registrations now open. Oran Park Probus Club
Probus Clubs, throughout Australia and New Zealand, are social clubs for retired and semi-retired people in the community, offering friendship, fellowship, and fun to like-minded individuals. Once retired, many people wonder how they will fill their days. Family members often lead busy lives and live some distance away and the loss of a partner can lead to loneliness and an increased sense of isolation. Making new friends and starting some new activities may help to ease the loneliness. Joining a Probus Club is a good place to start. One way to make new friends is to take on an active role in the Club as a member of the management committee or as an activity leader or, just join an activity and have fun. At Oran Park Probus Club, we have monthly meetings which are held at Wests Lakeside Golf Club at Camden. Many members stay after the meeting to lunch together. We enjoy coffee and chat, pub lunches and fine dining events, walking, movies, craft, family history and a team attends Club trivia nights. The recent self-drive trip to Berrima Courthouse was followed last month by a trip to the site of the new Western Sydney Airport, including lunch at Mulgoa. Some of our members will be joining tours to the Cowra region and Norfolk Island before the end of the year. So different to last year when we were all in Covid lockdown! If you would like to attend a meeting as a visitor, listen to an interesting speaker, meet some of our members or know more about Oran Park Probus Club, please contact the Secretary for further details on 0410 758755 or email: secretary. oranparkprobusclub@gmail.com. r

FAITH – NEWLIFE ANGLICAN ORAN PARK

Who Needs a VCR? Do you remember the VCR? Maybe you still have one gathering dust like I do deep in the TV cabinet. More than likely, you’ve got a Blu-Ray player, or maybe just a streaming box. Those big old plastic VCR tapes seem ancient - as does the fact that you had to rewind them to get to the start! They’re no longer a regular feature of our lives because better movie consuming options appeared. They began the long fade out years ago and are now only a relic of an era that has passed. Is that what we’re seeing with belief in God in Australia? By a certain reading of the most recent Census, you might be forgiven for thinking so. The headlines tell us that those identifying as Christian are still in the most common religious group (43.9%) - but this has fallen from over 50% only five years previously. Despite growth in the numbers identifying as Hindu (2.7%) and Islam (3.2%), overwhelming the movement has been in those identifying as having ‘no religion’. This category is now reported as 38.9% of the population. What do we make of this? At one level, it seems straight forward. Australians are much more comfortable telling the government that they aren’t ‘Christian’. This sits pretty well with me too. It’s hardly like any church is seeing 4 in 10 of the population in a seat each Sunday. The reporting matches the reality. But is that because God has become redundant? Do we really have a streaming service vs VCR revolution in our spiritual health? Are we all satisfied, peaceful, and forgiving? I’m convinced that honesty is a great place to start when it comes to faith, so I welcome the Census results. I’m also comfortable that any Australian who has ‘no religion’ is welcome to find out why some of your fellow citizens still find good reasons to believe in God. I believe the ancient story of love, forgiveness, and hope found in Jesus is still as relevant and worthy of a first watch today - it’s a classic. A lot of people who had little to smile about in the latter half of the 19th Century in rural Australia, began to smile because of the presence and because of the dream of a courageous young woman – Mary MacKillop. Mary is one of Australia’s national treasures, and our Oran Park Catholic Church is blessed to have St Mary MacKillop as our parish patron. More than half a century before women were allowed to vote, at a time when there was no compulsory education, when poverty was rife, when religious discrimination was widespread, when the plight of the Aboriginal people was deplorable, when unemployment was commonplace and communication and travel extremely difficult, Mary saw the needs and wanted to bring about changes. She did through her good works, her educational initiatives and her establishment of homes for the poor, orphanages and refuges. It is no wonder that Mary of the Cross MacKillop became our first Australian canonised Saint. Her feast day is 8 August. Together, inspired by Mary MacKillop, may we (in her words) “Never see a need without doing something about it.”

FROM THEWORD EDITOR THE LAST Last month I travelled interstate, and judging by the hustle and bustle at the airport - I wasn’t alone in doing so. While I thoroughly enjoyed my time away exploring a new city; after a cancelled flight and all the ensuing chaos, I must admit there was no better feeling than to return home to my own neighbourhood. There’s a certain level of comfort that comes with the familiarity of local people and places. A number of families within our community are still cleaning up after the devastation of the most recent floods. With the unpredictable and extreme weather events we have experienced of late, I know many will be pleased to see Winter behind us. Here at the District Gazette we’re always on the lookout for interesting stories about local people doing local ‘things’. If you have an interesting story idea, reach out - we’d love to hear from you! Enjoy this month’s read! ‘Be happy with the little you have. There are people with nothing that still manage to smile’.
