Local Family Join The Jolliest Fun Run In Sydney Dust off your beards and hold onto your bellies, the Variety Santa Fun Run was held earlier this month at First Fleet Park in Circular Quay to raise funds for Aussie kids who are sick, disadvantaged or have special needs. Variety - the Children's Charity's annual run is one of the brightest, most cheerful events in Sydney. You can run, walk, push or roll your way around the 5km, flat and fully accessible course, all while making a difference to the lives of kids this Christmas. Entry fee included a free five piece Santa Suit to wear as you made your way around the course enjoying entertainment from a live DJ at the start and finish lines, music along the course, a giant snow dome and there was even some snow at the start line. Harrington Park family Rene and Michael Short along with their children Eliana (6) and Archer (15 months) took part in the Variety Santa Fun Run as a family this year.

FAITH – NEWLIFE ANGLICAN ORAN PARK
Article Written + Submitted by: Lead Pastor Stuart Starr @ New Life Anglican Church W: newlifeanglican.org.au E: stuart@newlifeanglican.org.au A: Cnr Central Avenue + Marcus Loane Way, Oran Park
A Singing Community So It's almost Christmas again. Does that thought fill you with dread about the busyness, or joy in the expectation of the family and friendship time that will be enjoyed? It becomes clichéd to say that the year has passed quickly etc. It certainly has been a year with its fair share of horror - from France, to Iraq, and the ongoing open wound that is Syria. What is our response? Often it can feel like staying inside and binge watching a bit of mindless Net-flicks behind a locked door is all we've got. I think there's a much more lifeaffirming response to the weariness and isolationism that can creep in - it's called carols. How can you really make a case for Christmas Carols as the answer to anything? Well firstly, getting out of the house and joining together as a community reminds us of who's around us - they're human, they're families, they love people just like us - they even have a matching blanket to eat their sausage sandwich on. Secondly, when we sing carols at Christmas we're reminded of a great hope for a world that desperately needs it. A hope bigger than a tweet. A hope that's got more substance than another cat video. The hope for the world celebrated at Christmas is that God the Father loved this broken world enough to send Jesus His Son into it - to love it and ultimately to rescue it from our biggest carcinogen - sin. In Christmas carols we sing of, "Peace on earth and mercy mild, God and sinners reconciled." God and you and me made right. Relationships restored, internal, family, global peace on offer - starting one changed heart at a time. So I'd like to invite you to join us at Gardner Reserve as we put on our Christmas present to you - the Oran Park Community Carols - December 17th 5:30-9:15pm. You can find more info www.facebook.com/oranparkcommunitycarols. I'd love to see you join us in Church too - our Christmas services are Christmas Eve 5pm and Christmas day 9am. Sing some hope - our world needs it. Stuart – New life Anglican Church
Two Huge Christmas Events For Oran Park With Christmas just around the corner, NewLife Anglican Church in Oran Park have two big events planned for the community that are not to be missed! The first event will be the Gingerbread Night. Come along to a night of festive fun as you make your gingerbread houses, chat over a cuppa, and hear a great talk from guest speaker Jane Major-Smith. As you construct your houses, Jane will be speaking about building a life with true purpose that might last a little longer than your Christmas creations. Everyone who comes will leave with a deliciously decorated gingerbread house. Included in the $30 cover charge will be the gingerbread kit, icing, cakeboard, lollies, and cellophane sheet to wrap it all up at the end of the night. Join them on Saturday December 3rd at NewLife Anglican Church, Oran Park from 6:30pm-9pm. Tickets are available from the front page of their website: www.newlifeanglican.org.au. If you missed it this year, be sure to mark it in your calendar for next year! The second event is the much anticipated and very popular Oran Park Community Carols. That’s right, they are on again this year! Bring your family on Saturday December 17th from 5:30pm with free jumping castles, climbing wall, faceprinting, great music, great carols, and a great BBQ. At around 9:15pm they will finish with their fabulous fireworks finale. They can't wait to see you there again on the grass at Gardner Reserve, Oran Park. Details can be found on the Facebook page: www. facebook.com/OranParkCommunityCarols.

Camden's Night To Shine! The community of Camden were out in huge numbers to kick off the Christmas shopping season at Light Up Camden 2016 last month. Many shopping stalls lined Argyle Street while John Street, dubbed Eat Street, housed many international cuisine stalls. Poperatic vocal quartet, Urban Opera, and unique punk rock band, The Dirty Reeds, entertained on stage after great performances by local schools and dance groups. Thousands of people wandered around Camden’s historic main streets. They enjoyed the local cafes and boutique stores typical of Camden’s township as well as browsing the many stalls operating on the night. The pony rides and 9D Mobile Cinema were popular all night long and the Larkin Place rides created nonstop thrills. Santa Claus set a cracking pace, barely taking a break, to hear the Christmas wishes of many kids and posing for countless photos. The Mayor of Camden congratulated the winner of the Mayor’s Christmas card competition before leading the countdown to Light Up Camden’s tree. The brilliant fireworks display capped off an excellent Light Up Camden event for all those fortunate enough to be in attendance. The Camden Chamber of Commerce and Industry again presented a wonderful community event enjoyed by all,
showcasing the attractive, historic town of Camden. Camden Chamber of Commerce would like to thank all sponsors involved being Funnells Electrical, Westpac Bank, Sydney Web Creations, Vintage FM, KS Audit, S Barry Accounting, C91.3, Urban Design and Landscape, Virtual Presidium and event partner Camden Council. A huge Congratulations and Thank you to the efforts of the volunteer Light Up Camden Committee, that had worked tirelessly to make this a great event!

FAITH – ST MARY MACKILLOP CATHOLIC PARISH ORAN PARK Article Written + Submitted by: Fr David Catterall MTh - Parish Priest @ St Mary MacKillop Catholic Parish Oran Park | P: 02 4648 2226 W: www.marymackillopparish. org.au A: 94 Oran Park Drive, Oran Park NSW 2570 Facebook: www.facebook.com/oranparkparish Twitter: www. twitter.com/oranparkparish
As we know Christmas 2016 means different things to different people: for some it is a time to spend with family and friends; whereas, for others it is a time to spend another Christmas alone without the presence of those they love most. For some, Christmas this year will be filled with emotions of grief and sorrow, as they remember loved ones who have died recently; whereas for others this day is the start of a hope filled future as they witness children and grandchildren celebrating their 1st Christmas. For some, Christmas 2016 is filled once again with mixed emotions, as they look towards an uncertain 2017. Whereas for others, like those from our local community serving in the many war torn regions of our world this Christmas will be celebrated amidst violence and bloodshed. For some, Christmas 2016 is another year to continue the traditions that have been passed on for generations. Whereas for others, like the Parish community of St Mary MacKillop Oran Park (that I am blessed to serve as their Parish Priest) this Christmas is a time to continue traditions only started last year as we gather for worship and prayer to celebrate Christmas 2016 (with Christmas Masses that will be held under the ‘outdoor covered area’ on Christmas Eve at St Justin’s School, 94 Oran Park Dr, and on Christmas Day at St Mary Mother of God Church, Leppington. You will find the program for our 2016 Christmas Masses on our website: marymackillopParish.org.au) Though no matter what Christmas 2016 means to us, and no matter what emotions and feelings, hopes and fears we bring to this Christmas; you and I are reminded by the events of the 1st Christmas - when a small, poor child that Christians name as ‘the Son of God’ was born - that Christmas is not simply about the presents and the parties (however special these may be) but an opportunity for all of us to strive to promote amongst our families and friends and our neighbourhoods those values that are so central to this special time of year – like love, peace and goodwill to all. Merry Christmas to one and all. Fr David Catterall MTh

Never Too Old To Laugh Ashlea Fisher-Sharpe, an 89-yearold local resident of Carrington Retirement Home near Camden and member of Camden Toastmasters was once a very shy lady who took on the challenge within Camden Toastmasters of public speaking. After winning Camden Toastmasters Humorous Speech Contest and Area 22 Humorous Speech Contest, Ms. FisherSharpe won the Toastmasters’ Phillip Division Humorous Contest with her speech. She was due to compete with the best speakers from New South Wales late last month at the Toastmasters Semi-Annual Conference in Batemans Bay in the District 70 Humorous Speech Contest. Ms. Fisher-Sharpe was surprised when she progressed to the state finals, for the first time since 1998. A favourite category, being 'humorous', gets her to think of the most ridiculous situations and piece them all together. The speech that she wrote approximately three years ago, was read to her grandson-in-law and he laughed. She didn’t think her speech was very funny, but apparently, he thought it was! Ms. Fisher-Sharpe, said public speaking was not easy for her. She thought she would not like it. Since then, Ms. Fisher-Sharpe has praised Camden Toastmasters for helping her overcome her shyness. “Toastmasters have been responsible for helping me and I would encourage you all to stand up and just give it a go” she said. Ms. Fisher-Sharpe is a mentor amongst many of the members of Camden Toastmasters and is a member who regularly gives back to her fellow group. She is now a very confident lady and the many members of Camden Toastmasters are proud to have her as a member and wish her all the very best for the contest. The District 70 Humorous Speech Contest had not yet taken place at time of print. Ashlea Fisher-Sharpe, "Giving It A Go" | Image Supplied

Kids Work All Year For Their Chance To Shine
The kids at Platinum Dance know how to chase a dream. A dancer’s dream is to dance on a spacious stage in front of a large audience with professional lights and sound, but this dream is not cheap. The kids of Platinum Dance Academy of Performing Arts, based at Catherine Field, have been fundraising all year for this opportunity. The kids and their families have sold countless fundraising chocolates, held family discos and even organised
two voting day barbecues in hopes of getting one step closer to that dream. “An opportunity to perform in a professional setting develops confidence and positive self-esteem, which is why we have worked so hard to give our students this experience, even though we are a small studio,” said co-owner Cynthia Foote. On the 22nd December, students between the ages of 2 and a half to 15 years will have their dream come true as they dance and cheer in the auditorium of Camden Civic Centre. Platinum Dance offers a range of lessons in tap, jazz, ballet, hip hop, contemporary, cheer leading and $5 adults yoga. The studio whose motto is “a safe, supportive environment that nurtures talents and develops good values and attitudes”, is currently taking enrolments for 2017. Do You Know What Your Kids Are Doing Online?
Five things you can do to keep them safe over the Christmas break.
1. Educate yourself about all social media platforms. Children are naturally curious and they will experiment. Make sure that you know what they are likely to be doing. 2. Communicate openly with your children. Talk to them rather than lecture. Ask questions about what’s going on in their cyber world and have discussions without criticism. This will help to build trust. 3. Teach them how to protect themselves online. Firstly, show them how to set their privacy settings. Tell them never to share personal information online and never take explicit photos, no matter who asks. Online conversations need to be respectful, so don’t send messages when you are angry or emotional. 4. Set some house rules and set an example. Too much time online can be isolating and addictive, creating unhealthy lifestyles. 5. Investigate software. There is software available that can block unsafe or objectionable sites. (The words "sex" and "porn" rank fourth and sixth among the top ten most popular search terms.)

Meant To Bee!
Local Harrington Park resident Lindsay Constance’s nature loving 11-year-old son witnessed a swarm of bees being exterminated by pest control. Very upset, Lindsay and his son made it their mission to save as many of them as they could. At first they didn’t know a thing about bees, so his son insisted they find out more.
Every time they talked about bees, they were around them. Even at events which took place they both always said it’s “Meant To Bee”. Lindsay asked himself, why did it take for my own son to bring me back to nature? Then he realised he should have looked at it long before now. Well you guessed it, they are now and have been beekeepers ever since and it’s one of their passions. As this time of year is a busy time for all of us, it’s also a busy time for bees being “Spring and Swarm Season” Spring, with the warm temperature and the flowers blooming, there is a desperate need for bees to pollinate to sustain life. Swarming to reproduce occurs for a number of reasons like renewing a queen, no room for the colony or other problems like diseases. When bees swarm, they fill themselves with honey for the journey to find a new home protecting their queen while scouts search ahead for the next stop. This is when you see them in a low tree or such. At this time, they are less likely to sting and are not really interested in people, so don’t bother them as they may just move on in a day or so. Bees are not pests that just want to sting you (they don’t). Bees keep us alive so if you see a swarm, call a beekeeper not pest control. If you need pure honey direct from the hive, Call Lindsay 0434 742 337 “MEANT TO BEE” Honey. Beeware! | Image: Lindsay Constance

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT WITH..... PEREIRA REALTY GROUP
Selling the Lifestyle!
When John and Shaun Pereira established their boutique Agency, Pereira Realty Group over 2 years ago in the competitive market place of Macarthur, they made a commitment to themselves that they will never lose sight of the fact that their business will always be a customer focused, results driven business. They will not rest until they know they have achieved the best possible outcome for their clients. Two years on, the Father and Son team with a combined total of close to 25 years’ experience in Residential Sales and Property Management, along with their dedicated staff still maintain this vision and now have grown from humble beginnings to two locations at Smeaton Grange and Oran Park with plans for more locations to come in the near future. “Nothing satisfies me more than being able to assist my clients to achieve their goals and take the next step in their property journey, regardless of whether they are buying or selling” says Agency Director Shaun Pereira. With an impressive list of record sales in the area, Shaun advises that he has seen over the last 18 months a vast number of buyers coming into the area, especially in Harrington Park, Mount Annan and the new subdivisions, from areas in the Inner West and Eastern Suburbs. These buyers were formerly in apartments but can’t go past the unbelievable value for money that our area offers. These buyers are generally planning the next stage in their lives - starting a family. They can’t see the sense in paying $800,000+ for a small apartment when they can purchase a large family home here with a backyard – they crave the lifestyle that the Macarthur region has on offer! Feel free to contact Shaun if you would like to be kept up to date with the local property market or if you would like to find out what buyers are willing to pay for your home.

MONEY MATTERS
Article Written + Submitted by: Burke Chalk + Ball Accountants + Financial Advisers A: 5/5 Hollylea Rd, Leumeah NSW 2560 P: 02 4628 3957 E: Info@bcbtax.com.au
Super – Have You Got Enough? Have you ever considered how you will fund your retirement? Like many Australians you may contribute regularly to your superannuation fund, but have you actually determined how much you will need to survive once you stop working? Waiting until you retire to do the sums is leaving it too late. There are a few questions you can ask yourself to help decide how much you are going to need to have in your super account. 1. A general rule of thumb is that when you retire, you will need about 2/3 of your current income to be able to comfortably make ends meet. Will your current super arrangements meet this requirement, or will you need to make extra payments or consider other investment options? 2. Think about your debts – will these all be discharged by the time you retire, or will you still need to service them? Make sure any future repayments are factored into your calculations. You might want to pay off your home once you are retired, which will mean a large one off payment. 3. What kind of lifestyle are you going to want when you retire? Where are you planning to live? Are you hoping to travel or buy a boat? Make sure your retirement income is enough to fund your ideal retirement, including any recreational pastimes you are planning to be involved in.
It is a good idea to get financial advice when you are planning for your retirement. Superannuation is only one source of retirement income – there are other options that could help you enjoy your dream retirement. We are specialists in the area of retirement planning and feel free to arrange a free financial health check with our Financial Adviser.
Christmas Trivia Did you ever wonder where X-Mas came from? X means Christ in Greek so to shorten the word Christmas we sometimes use X-Mas.

A Pet Is For Life Not Just For Christmas Every year hundreds (yes, hundreds!) of thousands of animals are surrendered or abandoned across Australia. Many of these start out as cute and cuddly Christmas gifts but end up homeless when the full responsibility of animal care becomes apparent. Pets are undoubtedly a whole lot of fun and provide many well documented health benefits but they live on average between 10-12 years and require lots of care and attention, making an animal a long term responsibility that takes time and money. Things to consider before adding a pet to your family: • Get the right pet for you: Make sure you do your homework to ensure the pet is appropriate for your lifestyle and home. The species, breed and age of an animal will impact the different feeding, grooming, exercise, space and other care requirements. • Cost: Even with pet insurance, pet care can be expensive, particularly if an emergency occurs. Initial costs for dogs and cats include vaccinations, microchipping, desexing, toys, food bowls, bedding, housing and obedience training. Ongoing costs include food, worming and flea control, annual vet checks, and vet bills for accidents and health issues. • Time: Pets require time and attention every day, from exercise and feeding to training and grooming. If you work long hours or have a busy social life, consider if you will have enough time to give a pet the love and attention it needs. Puppies and kittens in particular require long hours of toilet and obedience training plus regular worming and vet visits for vaccinations up until 16 weeks of age. If you do decide you are ready for the commitment of a pet, be sure to consider getting a rescue animal. It’s very likely your perfect pet is out there at your local animal shelter or the RSPCA, just waiting for its forever home with you.
