First Sod Turned at Oran Park Hotel
Momento Hospitality Group are excited to announce the breaking of the ground of Oran Park Hotel, located at the intersection of Dick Johnson Drive and Central Avenue, Oran Park. The sod turning ceremony marks the beginning of construction on the $40 million three storey project. The hotel will be built around a unique interior garden feature and will include a rooftop cocktail bar, gold glass cinema and a high-end steakhouse. Some have even touted it as a ‘super pub’. There will be two cinemas, each with a 40-person capacity, and a number of function and training rooms on the first floor. The ground floor will be home to a woodfire pizzeria, a bistro, a café, a sports bar, and a function centre. Marcello Colosimo, CEO of Momento Hospitality Group said “Greenfields and the Perich family have been fantastic to work with and Camden Council have been very efficient and progressive. We are all working together with the goal of bringing a fantastic food and beverage experience to one of the fastest growing suburbs in NSW”. “It will provide a chance to create memories in all facets of life, whether it be birthday’s through to sporting events, or even just having a casual meal and drink”. The construction is expected to take 18 months to complete and will be one of the largest pubs in Australia.

Get Ready Summer

Subscribe to weather alerts, know your evacuation routes and prepare a ‘get ready to go’ kit – these are some of the safety tips NSW emergency service agencies have shared ahead of the 2021 summer season. NSW SES and Resilience NSW have joined forces to remind locals in the Hawkesbury-Nepean Valley that storm season is upon us, a wet summer is forecast and there is increased risk of flooding across NSW, particularly within the region. NSW SES Commissioner Carlene York said the widespread flooding that impacted the region in March demonstrated not only the potential for devastation, but also the importance of preparing for these events. “It wasn’t that long ago we saw major flooding sweep through this area, impacting thousands of properties,” Commissioner York said. “There is the very real risk of a similar event happening again, which is why we need communities to know their risks and have a plan now. “It’s important those in the area know the early signs of potential flooding, are familiar with their key evacuation routes, follow advice of NSW SES, and prepare a ‘get ready to go’ kit ahead of time. “While you can’t fight floods, you can certainly prepare for them,” she said. Resilience NSW Executive Director, Operational Management and Partnerships, Dominic Lane, urged locals to use the start of summer to have a conversation with friends and families about being prepared for seasonal emergencies. “Our emergency service organisations do an incredible job keeping us safe, but they can only do so much. Being aware and prepared is everyone’s responsibility, whether at home, at work or away on holidays,” Mr Lane said. “Think about the area you’re in and what types of emergencies could affect you and plan now for what you will do in

an emergency. Get your home or business ready, connect with NSW emergency services to stay informed and look out for each other,” he said. NSW SES has teamed up with Resilience NSW and Infrastructure NSW to develop an awareness campaign across the Hawkesbury-Nepean Valley called Floods. What’s your plan? Running for eight weeks from 25 October, the campaign encourages community members to know the early signs of potential flooding and have a plan in place to respond. Score Yourself a FourLegged Best Friend Through Council’s Animal Care Facility
how awesome it is to save a dog and give them a good life. “After lots of hard work and training, Murphy raised over $600 for the fundraising event Pawgust, which is an awesome achievement considering he had never walked on a lead prior to his adoption. “My advice to anyone who is considering adopting a dog would be to go and meet the dog. You never know what the dog has gone through before and it’s going to be a work in progress, but as long as you invest time in the dog, it will learn to trust you and work with you.” Mayor of Camden, Cr Therese Fedeli, said adopting a furry friend is extremely rewarding. “Adopting a pet truly does create a special bond between owner and pet, like no other,” Cr Fedeli said. “If you are hesitant to adopt a pet, or unsure of the process, Council’s staff members can provide you with the information you need.” For more information on pet adoption, visit camden.nsw.gov.au/pets/adopt-apet/ v

Sustainability Tips Learnt at Popular Workshops
If you’re looking to complete your family with a new furry friend, Council’s Animal Care Facility is just the place for you. Camden Council Animal Care Facility is located in Rossmore, where all lost, stray or surrendered companion animals from Camden are temporarily cared for, until they can find their forever home. The facility is open seven days a week and cares for both cats and dogs. Dog owner Nancy Mills, who adopted a male Terrier Cross in January this year, said she has worked hard to provide love and care to Murphy, which she suspected he did not receive prior to his adoption. “The first dog that I adopted was around 15 years ago, with Murphy being my third rescue dog. I had been looking for a new dog for a little while and I came across Murphy. I immediately thought that he is the right size for me, and I was in Camden the next afternoon to adopt,” Ms Mills said. “Murphy was reactive to everything when we first adopted him, whether it was cars driving past or other dogs, he would never sit still. It has taken a while and a lot of patience, but he is doing really, really well now. “The thing to note with rescue dogs, is that they just need a good home. I think it’s so important for children to understand

Residents have learnt the latest tips and tricks on how to be more sustainable around their homes with almost 100 people enjoying Council’s latest online Sustainability Workshops. The free workshops were hosted by a team of experts, covering the following topics: • Native plant identification; • Becoming waterwise at home and getting the most from your rainwater tank; • Building or renovating for comfort; • Solar panels and batteries; • The five biggest veggie gardening mistakes to avoid (and seven tips to get your patch thriving this spring); and • Ways you can create refuge for native wildlife with habitat gardening. Camden resident Robyn Hammond was the lucky winner of the $150 voucher that was open to all residents that participated in the workshops. Robyn selected Red Leaf Nursery in Leppington for her prize, and is looking forward to purchasing some new plants to put into practice what she learnt at the workshops. “I attended two workshops and enjoyed learning about native plants and habitat gardening,” Ms Hammond said. “The workshops were definitely worthwhile, and I will be looking out for Council’s next workshops to participate in.” For more information on sustainable living in Camden, go to camden.nsw.gov. au and search ‘Sustainability’.

New Western Sydney Outdoor Music Festival Is On Its Way Some of South-West Sydney’s most talented performers will join emerging artists to take to the stage in February 2022 for a new outdoor music festival. ValleyWays, which will be held at Onslow Park in Camden has been developed by renowned local talent and ARIA awardwinning artists, The Rubens, in partnership with TEG’s
Live Subsidiary, MJR Presents. Minister for Jobs, Investment, Tourism and Western Sydney, and Minister for Trade and Industry, Stuart Ayres said the festival would deliver a new cultural experience for the Camden community, enhance the region’s tourism offering and create local jobs. “ValleyWays is a boost to live music culture throughout Western Sydney and gives visitors another reason to add Camden to their calendar of places to visit this summer,” Mr Ayres said. “Our investment in this event for 2022 and 2023 supports our COVID-19 Road to Recovery program by assisting with event operational costs so that organisers can offer the most affordable tickets. It also aligns with the Visitor Economy Strategy 2030 and Western Sydney Visitor Economy Strategy to deliver new events to attract local and interstate visitors. “ValleyWays will bring some of our country’s most popular artists to Western Sydney and give the industry the opportunity to get back out and do what it does best – entertaining audiences and supporting the next generation of Aussie talent,” Mr Ayres said. Member for Camden, Peter Sidgreaves said the event is very exciting news for Camden. “This new event is sure to be a magnet for music lovers and will drive visitors to our local community. There is so much to see and do in our region and I know our businesses will very much enjoy the economic injection this new festival will create,” Mr Sidgreaves said. The Rubens said: "We are so thrilled to be putting on a big outdoor festival in the town we all grew up in! Our community has been big supporters of the band over the last 10 years, and this is our way of giving back. ValleyWays will bring the best music to our own backyard, and we hope to do this for many years to come!" The Rubens will be joined by headliners Skegss, Middle Kids, Slowly Slowly plus a line-up of supporting artists including Stevan, Becca Hatch and Hollie Col to entertain a crowd of up to 5,000 attendees from 12pm through to 10pm. One artist or band will also have the chance to join the ValleyWays line up thanks to triple j Unearthed. More details on this opportunity will be announced in January 2022. Tickets for the public went live last month (23 November 2021) and are available now. Located in the heart of Sydney’s Southwest within the new Camden Medical Precinct, upon completion, The George Centre will be one of the largest private hospitals in Sydney and the only private paediatric focused facility in NSW. Michelle brings a depth of professional experience, most recently as Chief Executive Officer of St John of God Bendigo Hospital in Victoria for the past two and a half years. Prior to that, she held General Manager and Director of Nursing Roles in New South Wales, including NSW Sydney Southwest and Nepean Private Hospitals. Michelle’s extensive hospital experience working alongside specialist doctors and a multidisciplinary clinical team of nurses, theatre staff and support services equips her to build and lead the team of experts to operate The George Centre. “I’m very excited to return home to Southwest Sydney,” said Ms Stares. “My goal is to build a great team of medical specialists at The George Centre and deliver the best healthcare to the community in which I grew up”. It is designed with a strong focus on patient well-being, choice, and control, i.e., type of birth, what postnatal care is received and even hospital food and mealtimes. The 9,336m2 facility will include 78 beds (57 overnight inpatient beds) across dedicated paediatric, adolescent, and maternity wards, five operating theatres, four delivery suites, two endoscopic suites, medical consulting suites, a critical care unit, and in and out-patient radiology and pathology services. r Michelle Stares CEO The George Centre | Image Supplied by Acurio. Development Approval for Oran Park Leisure Centre
Parental Burnout is Real, and we Need to Take it Seriously To feel ‘burnt out’ is to feel over-extended, exhausted, and that you nothing left to give. The feeling of ‘burnout’ is often accompanied by negative thoughts about yourself and people around you. Burning out can look different for different people. It may look loud and aggressive for some, and quiet and withdrawn for others. Regardless of how it presents, burnout is a serious problem for modern parents. The term‘burnout’was first coined to describe an occupational hazard for certain professionals such as social workers, nurses, and therapists. It was thought that the stress of constantly attending to others in need can lead to a state of fatigue and cynicism. In recent years, researchers have examined how burnout can happen in other contexts. Parenting is broadly considered one of the hardest jobs there is! And, unfortunately, parents around the world are reporting increasing symptoms of burnout. Parents who are burning out often feel they are ineffective or poor in their parenting role. This can relate to unrealistic expectations of parenting. Social media can be a source of distress for some parents when they perceive that everyone else seems to raise their children with no trouble at all. Parental burnout can also make it difficult to see your child in a positive light. There can be resentment or a feeling of emotional distancing that threatens the quality of the parent-child relationship if not addressed. It is important to know that if you are struggling in your parenting duties, you are not alone. Burnout is most often reported by parents of newborns, and at other points of significant change or transition in the parenting journey. It helps to ask other family members or friends to give you some practical or emotional relief during these times. You can also call the NSW Parent Line on 1300 130052 or Lifeline on 13 11 14 for a chat, advice, and referrals. Support is here and available. Burnout is not permanent. You can thrive again, with a team behind you.

Residents are a swimming stroke closer to seeing Oran Park Leisure Centre come to fruition, after the Western Sydney Planning panel endorsed Council’s development application for the project last month. Oran Park Leisure Centre, to be located on Central Avenue, will be a significant addition to the precinct and is set to include an indoor 50-metre swimming pool, leisure pool, learn-to-swim pool, spa and sauna, indoor basketball courts, gymnasium, cafe, creche facilities and a basement carpark. “Council is committed to providing the community with exceptional sporting and leisure facilities to be able to enjoy close to home and Oran Park Leisure Centre will be a welcome addition to the Camden area,” a Council spokesperson said. “It’s exciting to receive approval for the project which will be a significant addition to the Oran Park precinct. This is one step closer to bringing another state-of-the-art facility for the Oran Park, and the wider Camden community, to reality and we look forward to construction beginning in 2022.” Greenfields Development Company General Manager Mick Owens said the Leisure Centre would be a great addition to Oran Park. “We are very proud to see this fantastic community facility to soon start construction,” he said. “It is another important ingredient to be added to the heart of the town centre and is within easy access to the people of Oran Park and Camden. We are very grateful for the working collaboration with Camden Council in delivering this Leisure Centre.” The $55 million Leisure Centre will add to a range of stateof-the-art sporting facilities in the Camden area, including Narellan Sports Hub, Kirkham Park BMX park, the area’s first synthetic football field at Nott Oval and the soon to be completed Fergusons Land Cricket Facility. The project is co-funded by Council and Greenfields Development Company, with Warren and Mahoney Architects having designed the building, based on the principle of ‘sport on display. It includes a high level of sustainability, innovative swimming pools, gym and four indoor sports courts. The facility has an estimated completion date of mid to late 2024. r Oran Park Leisure Centre Artists Impression | Image/Article: Camden Council
Santa Swaps Sleigh for Fire Truck Santa Claus is coming to town, in a fire truck. That’s right, the man in the big red suit will be joining Gledswood Rural Fire Brigade (RFB) this month to visit the boys and girls in our local community for the Annual Santa Run. On Saturday 11th of December, they will leave Catherine Fields (Gledswood RFB Station) and visit Oran Park and Gregory Hills, whilst on Saturday 18th of December they will visit Catherine Park, Harrington Grove and Gledswood Hills. Both days will run from 9:00am to 4:00pm. “Given the privileged position we hold in the community, Santa has selected us to assist him in visiting many of the boys and girls in our local community” said Bala Dayaram, Community Engagement Officer of Gledswood RFB. “On these days, we escort Santa around the neighbourhood in the fire truck to see all the good boys and girls. Santa normally carries with him some little presents for the kids as he passes by in the fire truck. We will then normally stop at an allocated park in each of the suburbs, so that the kids can take photos with Santa! Stay posted via our Facebook page” he continued. Gledswood RFB will also be participating in the Bunnings Warehouse Community Family Night on Thursday 9th of December at Gregory Hills. You can stop by for a sausage sizzle and a look inside the fire trucks. “The last couple of years have certainly been tough on all of us, especially the kids. As such, we take pride in knowing that the children that get to see Santa/take a photo with him have another small thing to look forward to and often brings them a lot of happiness and joy. We enjoy serving the community as best we can, and this is another avenue through which we endeavour to do so” Bala ended. Oran Park Probus Club
Probus is a social group for retired and semi- retired people in the community. It is a great way to make new friends and develop some new interests or hobbies. At Oran Park Probus Club, we are always happy to accept new members. December will be our last meeting of the year. When we recommence meetings in February 2022, we would hope to be able to invite prospective members to come along to a meeting as a visitor, to find out what Probus is all about and whether you think Oran Park Probus Club might suit you. Monthly meetings are usually held on the first Tuesday of the month at Wests Lakeside Golf Club at Camden, commencing at 10.00am. The meetings start with a speaker and topics are varied. In February, we will hear all about the Joadja mine - a talk that had to be postponed due to the Covid lockdown. We hope we’ve seen the last of lockdowns, but members must still abide by the current Covid regulations imposed by NSW government and Wests Clubs. It is exciting to end the year with a face-to-face meeting once again and, at the December meeting, we will be entertained by a group of singers! Lunch will follow – a much anticipated get together and a Christmas celebration. We can then look forward to 2022, to recommence all the activities that were postponed or cancelled this year due to the pandemic and get back to the friendship, fellowship and fun that being a Probus member is all about! If you would like to know more about Probus or Oran Park Probus Club, please contact the Secretary by email: secretary. oranparkprobusclub@gmail.com or by phone: 0410 758755. r Image: Memories of a December meeting in times gone by | Image Supplied
FAITH – NEWLIFE ANGLICAN ORAN PARK

At Christmas Jesus is the Name of the Game Kids often have pet names - the names we call them because we love them. It could be a play on their regular name (we shorten William to Billy or lengthen James to Jimmy). Maybe it’s a statement on their character - ‘Tiger’ or ‘Princess’. Most times it’s just something that endears them to us. Jesus is a name with a meaning - it means, “God saves”. That’s a pretty good name for all who feel like they are unprepared to face a Holy God as thoroughly imperfect people. Writing 700 years before the birth of Jesus, the prophet Isaiah foresaw the heart of God’s plan to save people like us. Matthew recalls these words and records Jesus’s birth like this, ““The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”)”. Do you see the second name? Immanuel. This tells us how the baby born in a shed, laid in a feeding trough for animals, visited by shepherds, could be the centrepiece of a “God saves” plan. God would rescue sinful people by becoming one of them. ‘God with us’ *is* the plan. Jesus would walk the dusty streets of Palestine. He would heal the sick. Teach a life of love and then demonstrate that love by laying down His sinless life on the cross for us - the sinful ones. This Christmas, we’d love you to join us to celebrate that message. We’re inviting you to bring the family to Oran Park Anglican College on Christmas Eve (24th) from 5:00pm-6:00pm for an outdoors Carols and Christmas service. Then on Sunday morning, we’ll be opening the church building at 9:00am for a traditional Christmas service. You are welcome at both, as we hear the wonderful news wrapped up in the name Jesus - who is Immanuel - God with us. More info on our website. FAITH – ST MARY MACKILLOP CATHOLIC PARISH ORAN PARK
Article Written + Submitted by: Fr David Catterall MTh - Parish Priest @ St Mary MacKillop Catholic Parish Oran Park P: 02 4648 2226 W: www.marymackillopparish.org.au A: 94 Oran Park Drive, Oran Park NSW 2570 Facebook: www.facebook.com/oranparkparish Twitter: www.twitter.com/oranparkparish As we know, Christmas 2021 means different things to different people. For some it is a time to spend with family and friends; whereas, for others it is a time to spend another Christmas alone without the presence of those they love most. For some, Christmas this year will be filled with emotions of grief and sorrow; whereas for others this day is the start of a hope filled future as they witness children and grandchildren celebrating their first Christmas. For some, Christmas 2021 is a year to start new traditions that can be passed on for years to come. Whereas for others, like the parish community of St Mary MacKillop Oran Park (that I am blessed to serve as Parish Priest), this Christmas is a time to continue faith traditions that have been handed on from one generation to the next, as we once again gather for worship and prayer to celebrate Christmas 2021. Though no matter what Christmas 2021 means to us, and no matter what emotions and feelings, hopes and fears we bring to this Christmas; I invite you and your loved ones to come and celebrate Christmas 2021 at St Mary MacKillop Church, Oran Park. Our Christmas Mass program for our two Mass centres of St Mary Mother of God Church at Leppington and St Mary MacKillop Church at Oran Park can be found on our website www.marymackillopparish.org.au. May the events of the first Christmas, when a small, poor child that Christians name as ‘the Son of God’ was born, remind all of us that Christmas is not simply about the presents and the parties (however special these may be). It is an opportunity to strive to promote amongst our families, friends, and our neighbourhoods those values that are so central to this special time of year – like love, peace, and goodwill to all. Merry Christmas to one and all.

Here Come the Collies
Campbelltown Collegians Cricket Club are primed and ready for a big 2021/22 season ahead in the Camden District Cricket Association (CDCA) Competition. The local club, which is based at St Gregory’s College in Gregory Hills heads into the new season with 5 junior teams, 1 Under 10’s team, 2 Under 11’s teams, 1 Under 13’s team and 1 Under 14’s team. They also have 5 senior teams, highlighted by First and Second Grades. “With a COVID and rain affected 2020/21 season, our main highlights were having 2 junior sides in the semi-finals and our 6th Grade team taking out the Minor Premiership” explained David Thomas, President of Campbelltown Collegians Cricket Club. The ‘Collies’ are looking forward to an uninterrupted season of great cricket. “This season, we’re mostly looking forward to getting out on the field and playing as it’s been a very long off season. We’re also excited to have some former players, both young and older, back playing for the club” he smiled. Registrations are full for the current season; however, they will be running a school holiday clinic for juniors who want to get into cricket or want to advance their skills. For more information about Campbelltown Collegians Cricket Club, find them on Facebook, Instagram or at their website http:// www.colliescricket.nsw.cricket.com.au/default.aspx?

FROM THEWORD EDITOR THE LAST The sun is shining, pools are full, and the BBQ is firing. The festive season is only weeks away, as many of us prepare for the ‘most wonderful time of the year’. 2021 was certainly a year that tested us all. If it has taught us anything, it’s that we are resilient and that tough times bring people together. As restrictions further ease and borders open, it’s time now to reconnect with our many families and friends that we have so dearly missed. December’s edition has a Christmas feel that is sure to leave you ready for the holidays. To our Advertisers, Contributors and Readers – from our team to you and yours, we wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy & Healthy 2022. As we prepare to open the blank page of next year, may it be the best chapter you’ve ever written. Enjoy the final read of ‘Your Community News’ for 2021. We’ll be enjoying a much needed break, and will be back in your letterboxes, bright and fresh in February for our first edition of 2022.
