Army Cadets Now Recruiting

Did you know that we have our own Army Cadets unit in Camden? 23ACU Camden meets on Thursdays during school terms from 7:00pm to 9:30pm at Camden Airport. Boys and girls turning 13 in the calendar year up to 16 years are eligible to join Army Cadets. They are a Youth Development Organisation which offer Military Style Activities. Army Cadets are structured and follow the Army protocols and procedures, which are adapted for teens. “The Cadets run the program and are supervised by Army Cadet trained volunteers. Activities include Drill, Marching, Basic First Aid, Navigation, Field Craft, and Radio Comms, which are put into field practice, one weekend a school term. 23ACU also support Camden RSL Sub Branch for their ANZAC Day Services” said Captain Mary-Anne Mariotto of 23ACU Camden. The Army Cadet program encourages Teamwork, Leadership, Service, Courage, Respect, Integrity and Excellence under the framework of Army. These are essential life skills and are valued by future employers, universities, and the wider community. “As the Officer Commanding at 23ACU, it is wonderful to see how young shy teens develop into young adults who are potential leaders of the future” Captain Mary-Anne Mariotto explained. For more information, visit the website http://www. armycadets.gov.au or contact the unit directly on the mobile numbers: 0420 722931 or 0444 529655.

Enjoy Camden’s History With New Heritage Map Learning about the history of Camden right from your fingertips is now possible with the recent launch of Council’s interactive heritage map. To improve the community’s access to information on heritage items in the Camden LGA, residents and visitors are now able to search and view existing heritage listed properties and locations across the Camden area online. “Heritage makes up an important part of the character of the Camden area and it is fantastic to give residents access to explore so many items, places, and precincts of heritage significance with the new heritage map,” a Council spokesperson said. “The map consists of many items, places or precincts including public buildings, private houses, archaeological sites, bridges, roads, churches, schools, parks and gardens, trees, memorials, lookouts,

and natural areas. “This is a great nod to the history of our area and allows the present and future generations to enjoy it.” The next phase of the project is to include information from this year’s My Camden Stories campaign, which gathered information from residents who were asked to uncover their untold stories behind Camden’s rich and diverse history. Be Paw-Some For Your Pet We all know anything is paw-sible when you have a dog or cat, and to kick-off the new year Council is reminding residents to be responsible pet owners. Camden is home to more than 50,000 cats and dogs and although they become our best friends, it is important for residents to be mindful of providing their pets with adequate care and their responsibility in and around the community, including: • Registering your pet and keeping their details up to date; • Picking up your dog poo – Scoop it, bag it, bin it; • Doo Good - Waterways Stormwater Protection; • Microchipping and desexing your pets; and, • Keeping your pets safe during extreme weather.

Mayor of Camden, Cr Therese Fedeli said for many Australians, pets are important members of the family. “Pets are truly a joy to have around, but they are also a big responsibility,” she said. “It is important to remember that pet ownership requires an investment of time

Love animals and want to help Council care for them? Council has installed two ‘Water for Wildlife’ water drinking stations in Mount Annan and needs your help. Council has partnered with Animals Australia on the initiative, with the two drinking stations located within George Caley Reserve which can hold 15 litres of water each. Each drinking station will need to be checked regularly to ensure wildlife such as wallabies, wombats, echidnas, and birds have consistent access to safe water.

Mayor of Camden, Cr Therese Fedeli is calling on residents to report any observations and maintenance requests. “We are lucky enough to be living amongst a diverse environment which is home to many animals and Council is committed to caring for them,” she said. “It is important that residents contact Council with any observations of wildlife using the water drinking stations or if the water stations need maintenance. “By letting us know any observations you make about the water stations when using the Reserve, we will be able to determine how this project is helping our local wildlife.” For more information on the initiative or to report an observation or maintenance request, go to bit.ly/32EObt1 or phone Council on 4654 7777. r

LV Switchboard Rescue M2E Services are an equal opportunity employer with a diverse workforce that reflects contemporary, multicultural Australia. The new paediatric and maternity private hospital, The George Centre, remains ahead of schedule three months into construction at Gregory Hills, in Sydney’s Southwest. The George Centre will be more than just a hospital. It is designed with a strong focus on patient well-being, choice, and control (i.e., type of birth, what postnatal care is received and even hospital food and mealtimes). The 9,336m2 facility will include 78 beds (57 overnight inpatient beds) across dedicated paediatric, adolescent, and maternity wards, five operating theatres, four delivery suites, two endoscopic suites, medical consulting suites, a critical care unit, and in and out-patient radiology and pathology services. The new facility will help to alleviate the current shortfall in paediatric and adolescent hospital beds in southwest Sydney, where the population growth is rapid, enabling more families to access the healthcare services they need close to home. Due to open by mid-2023, The George Centre is being commissioned to the highest standards with the needs of medical specialists, patients, and staff at its heart.

PARENTS CORNER

Article Written + Submitted by: Monica Purcell | Family Facilitator Nepean Community & Neighbourhood Services W: www.nepeancommunity.org.au E: info@nepeancommunity.org.au

Parents Cannot Afford to “Switch Off” When it Comes to Kids and Technology Much of our digital world has not been built with the safety of children in mind, and recent media coverage has highlighted the risks. Given the scale of the problem, caregivers understandably feel overwhelmed. When we face tremendous challenges, a common human response is to ignore, deny or delay responding. What this sometimes looks like in families is leaving children to their own devices (quite literally!) Navigating the internet is like driving a car. It’s not only about whether a child or young person can operate the technology (growing up in the digital age, children and young people often adapt faster to new technology than adults do!). It’s about whether they have the cognitive, social, and emotional maturity to appropriately handle challenges in the online space. Top tips for preparing children to use the internet: Children need supervision, guidance, and support to be good digital citizens. From the beginning, explain that owning or operating devices is a privilege, not a right. Clearly articulate the limits, and let your child know that continued use of a device depends on their capacity to use it safely and appropriately. You will be most effective if you can understand and join your child’s digital world. Learn about their favourite places or activities, who they connect with online and how they understand the internet. Find ways you can connect over online activities, such as playing a game together. Communicate regularly about online safety. If you make an executive decision (i.e., removal of a device or app), explain your reasons. Where appropriate (and especially with young people), consider inviting your child into the problem solving – explain your concern and then ask, “what can we do about this?” Be a good digital role model. Children learn far more from what they see us do than what they hear us say! Consider your own online behaviour. Does this behaviour reflect the values you want to impart on your children? The 8th of February 2022 marks Safer Internet Day. Find more information and resources at esafety.gov.au and saferinternet.org.

Thousands of children across the country will walk through the school gates for the first time this month, beginning their education journey. 5-year-old Arlo Mehmed is one of those children and he will be starting Kindergarten at Barramurra Public School in Oran Park. Arlo has a younger brother Sullivan (Sulli) who is two and a baby sister Lola and is the first to start big school. “Arlo is looking forward to starting school and learning about space and doing science experiments. He wants to learn to read stories by himself and make lots of new friends” explained Casey Brennan, Arlo’s Mum to the Oran Park Gazette. Away from school, he is a very active boy who loves his sports. “He loves to do BMX, play hockey at Oran Park Hockey Club, do puzzles and train to be a ninja on his monkey bars,” said Casey. Despite not having started Kindergarten yet, Arlo has already set his sights on what he’ll be doing when he finishes school. “I want to be a professional BMX rider, a boxer, a ninja, and a scientist” he replied. For many parents and carers, that first day of school is filled with mixed emotions as they wave goodbye to their children. “It is exciting for Arlo to be exposed to new and fun things and experiences that will make him grow as a little person, but also a little nerve racking as he is entering a whole new level of independence and growth. We want him to do well, in whatever way that is important to him” agreed Casey. Best of luck to all those students who are beginning and returning to school in the local community this year. r Feature Article: [Cover+Above] Arlo ready in his school uniform. The 2021 season saw 330 players take the field for the local club. This consisted of 31 teams including their very first Over 35’s Team, Under 13’s Team and five Girl’s Teams. For 2022, they are looking to have 600 players across 42 teams. “Last season, we were finally able to hold our official grand opening with the club members, sponsors, and local community. We were privileged to have Camden Mayor Therese Fedeli, Representatives from the Bulls, Chairman and Board Members from Macarthur Football Association. The club had more than doubled in size compared to the previous season, with 16 of the sides being the Under 6’s and Under 7's. With a full season in sight for 2022, the club are positive about the new year ahead and are looking forward to a big year. “We are looking forward to having a full season. Whether you’re planting a new flower or maintaining that vegetable patch, local resident Fiona Plsek has created the perfect group for green thumbs, ‘Oran Park and Surrounds Gardening Club’. The Facebook group was formed two and a half years ago and already has over 500 members. “I am an ex-market gardener. I had neighbours who wanted to grow vegetables, but just needed some advice and a hand. From there, the group was created. It allowed me to share my knowledge as well as others about gardening” said Fiona Plsek of Oran Park and Surrounds Gardening Club. The group shares ideas, tips and learnings about all things gardening. They welcome sharing the success and failures in the garden. They also plan to have monthly meetups in the future. “We have previously had three meetups with members of the group. It was great to chat with one another. There were seedling and seed swaps, which gave members the opportunity to expand their gardens” Fiona reflected. “Some members have shared vegetables that they have grown, including olives and zucchinis” she added. One of the more popular discussions amongst the group now is about Dahlias. “It really is a fun group to be a part of. I enjoy being able to share insights and listening to people share their experiences. We love solving problems” ended Fiona. Oran Park Probus Club

The first meeting of Oran Park Probus Club for 2022 is scheduled for Tuesday, February 1st. However, with the increasing rise in Covid-19 infections, this will be subject to any new restrictions imposed by the NSW Government or by the Wests Clubs as the venue for our meetings this year will continue to be Wests Lakeside Golf Club, Camden. Hopeful of holding a face-to-face meeting, all Oran Park Probus Club members and visitors are expected to maintain Covid-safe practices and abide by Wests Covid-19 rules and regulations. Following the second Covid lockdown last year, the Club was able to hold its first face-to-face meeting in six months. The December meeting, also the last of the year, started with an uplifting performance from the Antegra Harmonics. Many of the members joined in singing the familiar popular songs from our younger years and enjoyed some Christmas favourites. Christmas lunch followed the December meeting, enjoyed by all who attended with members having plenty of “catching up” to do! Probus Clubs throughout Australia (and New Zealand) are social clubs open to retired and semi-retired people in the community, offering friendship, fellowship, and fun to like- minded people. Oran Park Probus Club holds monthly meetings and encourages members to take an active part in running the Club and participating in its activities. FAITH – NEWLIFE ANGLICAN ORAN PARK

Lasting Friendship

Friendship is a human need valued for at least 3,000 years, when these wise words from the Bible’s Book of Proverbs were written; “A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a time of adversity.” To face the trials of life with someone by your side is a blessing. In effect, they are like family - a companion in the midst of the worst of life. So, what are some characteristics that make a friend like that? 1) A friend can forgive. The Bible says, “A person’s wisdom yields patience; it is to one’s glory to overlook an offence.” Rather than blowing up and walking away, the true friend can find it in themselves to forgive a wrong done as they patiently wait for sense to return. It’s a choice to value the other more highly than the offence. 2) A friend understands deeply. “The purposes of a person’s heart are deep waters, but one who has insight draws them out.” To be known is a longing of the heart. To be known and loved is a true joy. Only the friend will care enough to uncover the real reason and engage long enough to understand. In this sense, friendship is both beneficial and costly. After all, why would I invest all that time in getting to know you? Surely because friendship offers the hope of being known too. I pray that in the midst of the current adversities, you know friendship and are working at being a good friend. It certainly prompts us to be more intentional - to make a phone call, to drop a text, and to pray. I think it’s worth asking if our friendships not only go to the depths of knowing each other well, but whether they have a heart to include Jesus too. That way our friendships become family and have a hope of being enjoyed into eternity.

FAITH – ST MARY MACKILLOP CATHOLIC PARISH ORAN PARK

Article Written + Submitted by: Fr David Catterall MTh - Parish Priest @ St Mary MacKillop Catholic Parish Oran Park P: 02 4648 2226 W: www.marymackillopparish.org.au A: 94 Oran Park Drive, Oran Park NSW 2570 Facebook: www.facebook.com/oranparkparish Twitter: www.twitter.com/oranparkparish I think it would be fair to say that many people began 2022 with the hope that the challenges faced in 2021, especially regarding the pandemic, would be behind us. But as we know, the start of 2022 has brought a new set of challenges, as many people – including relatives, friends, neighbours, and work colleagues – are diagnosed with Covid, or due to being a close contact are forced into isolation. At the same time, the sharp rise in Covid cases has seen many people decide to self-isolate and not gather in public places, including in our churches for weekend worship. Thanks be to God for the gift of livestream MASS ON DEMAND that here at St Mary MacKillop Parish we make available each weekend through our parish YouTube channel: bit.ly/mmop-live. But no matter the challenges we face - and as we pray in solidarity with those who are sick and isolating, along with our overstretched health workers and those in frontline work – we must strive to live with FAITH, HOPE and LOVE. As US priest Fr Satish Joseph so rightly says, “It is in these uncertain and difficult times that as a people of faith we pause to reflect, to pray, and to find hope. Like the early Christians, while we are realistic about our challenges, we do not let these challenges define us. No! We will only be defined by our faith. We will only be grounded in hope. And in spite of it all, we will only walk in love. “There are three things that remain,” St. Paul said to the Corinthians, “faith, hope, and love” (1 Cor 13:13). Faith, hope, and love - these virtues defined the early Christians and now they must define us. Not the pandemic, not our divisions, not the inequalities, not our fears, nor the uncertainties … during this time it is faith, hope, and love that will guide us beyond the pandemic and other raging challenges” (https://catholicoutlook.org/faith-hope-love-antidotes-for-the-pandemic-and-beyond/)

Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Camden Elected Camden Councillors Therese Fedeli and Paul Farrow have been elected as Mayor and Deputy Mayor respectively. Mayor Fedeli said being re-elected in the top job of Camden was an honour. “It’s such a privilege to be leading and working with my fellow Councillors during such a key time in Camden’s history,” Mayor Fedeli said. “The last two years have seen our community go through some truly difficult times, with the devastating bushfires, floods and of course COVID-19. But through tough times emerge tough people and I’m proud to say that’s what our community is – tough, resilient, and hopeful. “Camden is one of the fastest growing local government areas in the country, and I am dedicated to ensuring we continue to go from strength to strength. “I have called Camden home for the past 29 years now and I truly believe this is one of the best places in the world. I am more focused than ever on continuing our work to provide the best services, infrastructure, and facilities to support the wellbeing of our entire community. “I want our residents, now and in the future, as well as the people that work here and visit Camden, to love living, working, and playing here as much as I do. “I’d also like to congratulate Cr Farrow on being elected Deputy Mayor and thank my fellow councillors for the opportunity to re-serve as Mayor. Deputy Mayor, Cr Farrow said he was excited to get to work as the Deputy Mayor of Camden. “It is an absolute privilege to be elected as the Deputy Mayor of Camden,” Cr Farrow said. “As a proud Councillor and local resident, I am committed and energised about continuing our good work and advocating on behalf of our residents to achieve only the best outcomes for our community. “I look forward to working with Mayor Fedeli and my fellow Councillors during this term of Council to continue delivering a great range of initiatives, events and community projects for Camden and our residents.” r Deputy Mayor Paul Farrow (left) and Mayor Therese Fedeli (right) | Image/Article: Camden Council

FROM THEWORD EDITOR THE LAST Here we are in February with the first edition for 2022. Despite the new COVID variant Omicron arriving, we refuse to give in and continue the fight to stay safe for one another. Our health care workers are working hard to look after us and we cannot praise them enough. As we wave goodbye to our holidays, it’s time to prepare for a new year ahead of school, work, and life in general. This month, we follow the excitement of that first day of kindergarten, prepare for Summer sports and shine the spotlight on those members of the local community that make it just that ‘a community’. We wish our advertisers, contributors, and ‘you’ our much-valued readers a safe, happy and healthy year ahead. By continuing to support our Advertisers, you support us. For this, we thank you. To all the lovers and those in love. ‘Happy Valentines Day’ (Feb 14). Enjoy ‘Your Community News’. Remember, being happy never goes out of style!

Belinda
