Investing in Roads to Ensure Western Sydney Airport Precinct Takes Off

The 2024-25 NSW Budget will help open Western Sydney to the world, with more than $1 billion for roads connecting people and communities with the new International Airport and Bradfield City Centre.

Connecting Western Sydney International Airport, which is due to open in 2026, to communities is a key priority of the Minns Labor Government, and this commitment builds on recently announced funding for the same roads by the Australian Government.

Elizabeth Drive, which will take travellers directly to the new airport and connect major arteries of Mamre and Northen Roads, will see the state contribute $400 million for a long-awaited upgrade into a four-lane divided road.

This takes the total funding for Elizabeth Drive to $800 million in partnership with the Federal Government, after 12 years of announcements but no action under the Liberal government.

An additional $500 million will allow the next stage of construction to begin on Mamre Road between Erskine Park and Kemps Creek.

Mamre Road, a key freight route and zone for commercial development, will be widened with extra lanes to meet future growth, providing upgraded and new intersections and a new shared path for cyclists and pedestrians.

This Budget investment takes total Federal-State funding of Mamre Road to $1 billion.

The 2024-25 NSW Budget provides $115 million for Mulgoa Road to see a separated four-lane dual carriageway between Glenmore Park and Jeanette Street.

And $10.5 million for Appin Road will provide an upgraded intersection at St Johns Road, building a stronger connection from Wollongong and the South Coast to Campbelltown and the Western Sydney Airport precinct.

This budget continues work on the M12, a critical link which is under construction.

And they’re getting on with planning for the Eastern Ring Road and Badgerys Creek South Road – key future projects for the airport.

The two roads will connect to create the long-term north-south corridor east of the airport. The Eastern Ring Road will perform a major freight function and ultimately create a further connection for bus services into the airport.

Planning and construction will be staged and sequenced to ensure the road network meets growth and travel demand.

Western Sydney is the fastest-growing region in the country, with a population expected to grow from two million to three million people over the next two decades.

The 2024-25 NSW Budget guarantees these critical roads advance by matching federal funding.

This is part of the Minns Labor Government’s plan to build better communities for NSW. To ensure we’re building infrastructure which produces stronger, well-connected communities.

A plan to build a better NSW.

Mr Perfect Creating Connections

Mr Perfect, a community organisation that connects men across Australia over a relaxed, free BBQ to chat about all things life, has a local group in Narellan.

Mr Perfect Narellan meets at Merino Brewery (2 Forge Place, Narellan) on the 3rd Sunday of the month, from 10:30am till 12:30pm.

The group usually has 4 to 5 members turn up each month, with numbers varying depending on the time of year and school holidays.

“The meeting is a bunch of guys chewing the fat while cooking over coals. We have conversations around camping, BBQ, Sim Racing and also have some conversations around things that are affecting people” said David Mitchell of Mr Perfect Narellan.

Local members enjoy being a part of the group and building new connections with one another.

“I enjoy the social interactions and building of great friendships along the way. I have also received fantastic life advise along the 5 years Mr Perfect Narellan has been running” he explained to the Oran Park Gazette.

Groups, like Mr Perfect Narellan, are proving to be important in assisting men’s health in the local community.

“Mr Perfect is a critical event which allows men to socialise in a positive environment. Men need social stability and a place which they can come together and solve their problems, one BBQ at a time.

Threatened Species Art and Writing Competition

Entries for the Threatened Species Art and Writing Competition (TSAC) 2024 are now open. This competition will run from Friday 14 June to Friday 5 August.

The Macarthur region, our backyard, is home to a wide diversity of native plants and animals. Many of these plants and animals are affected by a range of impacts such as habitat loss, competition and predation from non-native species and foreign diseases. There are a range of species occurring within the local region that are at risk of extinction and have been listed as ‘Threatened Species.’

A Good Place To Start

When we’re tying our shoes, we start by crossing the laces. When we’re filling our cars, we start by opening the fuel cap. When we’re learning maths, we start by getting familiar with numbers. The simple things in life always have a helpful starting point. But what if you’re new to a suburb? Where do you start?

Of course there are stacks of places. If you have kids, it could be enrolling them in school. If you’re the sporting type, you’ll look for a club. It may be that you’re looking for a new barber and supermarket, so you’ll naturally start at the Podium. Oran Park is young enough that most of us who’ve been here for a few years can remember all these initial steps.

When it comes to feeling connected relationally and meeting people, I’d like to suggest one more place that you can start - our church. NewLife Anglican is on Central Avenue - just up the road from Oran Park Anglican College. One great place you could start is coming to our PlayTime group that runs on Wednesday mornings through school time. Each week a great group of 1-5 year old kids and their carers meet to enjoy craft, story time, with morning tea for the little ones, and an even better one for the carers. It’s a great place to connect with our friendly volunteers and a bunch of other mums, dads, and grandparents, who live locally.

And if it’s thinking more about life and purpose, our Sunday services are full of men and women just like you, who are seeking those answers as they follow Jesus. We meet at 9:30am and run a great kids’ program at that time. There’s a second gathering at 6pm, after which we eat a meal together each week. If you’re new and looking for a place to start, pop your head in and say hi - there’s a community right on your doorstep that would love to meet you.

The TSAC is a regional environmental education program, involving Camden Council, Campbelltown City Council, and Wollondilly Shire Council. The competition raises awareness of Biodiversity Month (September) and National Threatened Species Day on 7 September.

The competition targets all stages of primary school (age groups: 5-6, 7-9, and 10-12) and is also open to youth aged 13-16. TSAC encourages students to learn about a local threatened species and represent it in an artwork or creative writing piece.

The competition is now in its 17th year and through its cross-curricula nature has been successfully engaging students in Geography, Science, Visual Arts and English throughout the Macarthur region.

For more information about the TSAC contact Camden Council’s Natural Resource Officer on 13 CAMDEN or email sustainability@camden.nsw.gov.au.

David Allen’s Getting Things Done are effective methods, but only if you've got energy in the tank.

When you're running low or burnt out, Feel-Good Productivity is what you need to lift you up out of a rut and set you on the path to joyful, sustainable productivity.

Here are a few things I learned:

• Find the fun in my work (even if some days I have to look harder than others).

• Not all distractions are bad; some are energising. Let those ones in.

• Even introverts can harness the energising power of people to bolster productivity.

• Pretending you're a character in a movie while doing something nerve-wracking (e.g. writing, public speaking) can boost your confidence.

• I don’t have to be an expert to teach others. "You don't need to be a guru. You can just be a guide" (68).

• NICE goals (Near-term, Input-based, Controllable, Energising) trump SMART goals any day.

• I don’t have to be confident to get started.

• Forgive myself. Celebrate small wins. Feeling good does far more for my productivity than guilt-tripping myself into working.

• If I don’t have time for it tomorrow, I won’t have time for it in 6 weeks. Resist the seductive logic of overcommitment.

• “Breaks aren’t a special treat, They're an absolute necessity" (203).

• Keep my hobbies CALM, process-focused, not outcomefocused.

• Few problems can be made worse by spending some time around nature.

Whether you're a knowledge worker, a student, or a learning enthusiast, Feel-Good Productivity is an investment in yourself now and in the future.

St John’s Church Celebrates 175th Anniversary

St John's Church is a much-loved icon of Camden. Its tall steeple visible from across the district, with its prominent position up on the hill. 2024 marks a significant milestone. On the 7th of June, St John’s Church Camden celebrated the 175th Anniversary of its consecration.

Provisions for the Anglican church date back to 1825, when John Macarthur acquired 5,400 acres of land, which would become the Camden township and St John’s Church Precinct. Following John Macarthur’s death in 1834, his two sons James and William, began clearing land in preparation for the town. The brother’s plans for the town included a police station, magistrate’s court, post office and Anglican, Catholic and Presbyterian Churches.

In May 1841, a parcel of land was allocated to the Bishop of Australia, Rev. William Broughton, for the erection of a church, a residence for a clergyman and a burial ground.

The original church building plans were drawn in 1837 by James Hume of Sydney for a ‘classical style’ building. However, his design was abandoned above the 1840 foundation course in favour of the then contemporary ‘decorated gothic style’ design provided by John Cunningham, an English architect known to the Macarthur family.

In late 1837, Samuel Wheeler, was brought to Australia with his parents by the Macarthur family. As sawyers, they were employed by the Macarthurs to cut the finest timber for the construction of St John’s. Their exquisite craftsmanship evident in the ironbark ceiling and cedarwood pews of the time.

Richard Basden, the local builder, was employed to construct the church. He supplied the 386,000 bricks from his brickyard, located on the corner of Argyle and Oxley Streets. John Le Fevre acted as the carpenter and constructed the brick spire, framing and other timberwork. The ironbark used by Samuel Wheeler and his father, was cut from the forest at Mount Hunter. The stone was sourced from Denbigh at Cobbitty and lime from quarries near Goulburn. Although the foundation stone was laid in 1840, it was not until 7th June 1849 that the building was consecrated by Bishop Broughton.

The now distinguished building comprises of the western tower with a needle spire 38.7m high, nave and the chancel, which was added in 1874.

St John's Church remains a central part of the community of Camden, continuing to serve each generation with love and care. A special service to commemorate the 175th Anniversary will be held at St John’s on Sunday 7th July at 10am. All are welcome to attend and share in this historic occasion. Following the service, a morning tea will be held with the opportunity to view some of the church’s historical items on display.

Do you Over-Commit?

Feeling exhausted and upset with yourself again for overcommitting to one too many tasks to help your family, friends or work colleagues?

People pleasing is a common behaviour in which many of us feel compelled to engage. We too often find ourselves ‘yes-ing’ instead of declining. Whilst this seems a benign behaviour, it can significantly impact one’s mental health, time and energy. The root causes of over-committing can run deep. When we agree with someone, or say yes to a request, the typical response we obtain is reinforcing. The person asking is often smiling and showering us with compliments and thankyous', and often use phrases like ‘you are a legend!’

Alternatively, when we decline a person’s requests, or disagree with them, we are often met with an expression of disappointment or irritation, and comments that evoke guilt such as ‘Oh no, I don’t know what I’m going to do now’.

Whilst helping out and being altruistic can be of benefit, like most things, it should be in moderation with consideration of one’s own commitments, needs and wants. Neither ‘yes-ing’ nor ‘no-ing’ should ever constitute a rule. If ‘yes’ becomes your default, it is likely that you suffer a low sense of self-worth, and pleasing people is one of the few transient superficial ways to give your self-esteem a quick boost. People will continue to reinforce us for all our people pleasing at the expense of ourselves, so we do more of it. We eventually begin to wonder, if these people really like me for me or do they just like me for what I do?

Behaviour change: Cease people pleasing

• Start small- think of someone with whom you share a close relationship, pick a smaller insignificant topic, and disagree.

• Sometimes saying no is hard after ‘yes’ has become the default- start by delaying a response e.g. “I’m not sure, I’ll get back to you” or “yes, but not right now.”

• Continue to practice declining requests and learn to sit with the discomfort which will become easier with practice.

• Remember, declining does not mean being aggressive. Be assertive but always be respectful.

Youth Solutions Annual Charity Event Returns This Month

All young people deserve to have the capacity to live healthy, safe and wellconnected lives – so believes the team at Youth Solutions and their supporters.

The community will come together for the charity’s annual dinner this July, to help the charity do just that – raise critical funds for Youth Solutions’ Macarthur and Wingecarribee youth drug and alcohol prevention and health promotion programs. The best part? They’d like to extend the invitation to you.

The Youth Solutions Annual Charity Event has long cemented itself in the region’s social calendar as the perfect combination of style and sophistication, fun and fundraising. It’s a night to dress up, step out and have a great time – while supporting your local community.

The 2024 event is set down for Saturday, 27 July from 6:30pm to 11:30pm at The Cube, Campbelltown Catholic Club and Youth Solutions is looking for community members and businesses alike to get behind the cause and join the fun.

The event is Youth Solutions’ major fundraiser of the year, raising vital funds to deliver drug and alcohol prevention, education, health promotion and wellbeing programs and services for young people in the local area.

The theme of this year’s charity fundraiser is “Black and White Ball” and attendees are invited to get creative with the formal, black and white dress code.

Youth Solutions Chief Executive Officer Geraldine Dean said the event hit new heights each year. “Our Team and Fundraising Committee always do an exceptional job organising our fundraisers, but I know they’ve excelled themselves this year,” Mrs Dean said.

“It’s a fun and inspiring night to be a part of with plenty of food, fun and activities and always a full dance floor. But most importantly, I love the opportunity for the sponsors and supporters of Youth Solutions to come together and celebrate the work we do together and to support the young people in our community.”

“A very special thank you to our Major Event Sponsor, the Rotary Club of Narellan for their amazing backing of this event, as well as our Crystal Sponsor ABM Windows & Doors and all of our Quartz Sponsors. We’d love to extend the invitation far and wide so our community can come and be part of this special event.”

Youth Solutions Manager Marketing and Engagement, Amanda Dillon, is coordinating the event and reflected on the importance of community support.

“It’s so humbling to see the generosity of our community through events like this and its rewarding to work on something so wonderful that truly does make a huge impact in our community,” Mrs Dillon said. “Youth Solutions is servicing a growing region and demand for health promotion and prevention services is growing. We as a community need to do all we can to support the health, safety and wellbeing of our growing youth population. So, when you come along to our Charity Event, not only do you get a great night out, you also get to make a real difference.”

Youth Solutions’ health education programs, campaigns, services and activities focus on empowering, upskilling and educating young people.

Local Oran Park Survivor Steps Up Against

Prostate Cancer

It’s a disease that takes a high toll, having claimed the lives of more than 18,000 Australians over the past five years.

And now one local man has taken action, joining with hundreds of Australians to improve awareness of prostate cancer.

“Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australia, and yet very few people in our community understand the disease,” said campaigner Fr David Catterall.

“It’s a disease that has impacted me personally as someone diagnosed with metastatic prostate cancer, which is why I decided to step up and take a stand.”

David joined Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia’s Walk for Him campaign, with hundreds of men and women walking 25,000kms during Men’s Health Week, raising awareness and funds to fight the disease.

“I was diagnosed with metastatic prostate cancer last September and completed a round of chemotherapy at the end of January this year. I am now on NUBEQA tablets as well as Eligard injections,” said David.

“This wasn’t my first brush with prostate cancer. I had a robotic radical prostatectomy in 2017. Then when my PSA went up again and I had a round of salvage radiotherapy in December 2019 and 6 months of hormone therapy.

“I am now 50 years old and the parish priest of St Mary MacKillop Catholic parish in Oran Park. We have a very young congregation that currently has the largest weekend Catholic Church mass attendance in the Catholic Diocese of Wollongong.

“As part of my Walk for Him, I tackled an 8km walk alongside over 80 friends and church attendees, on Sunday 16 June, from our Oran Park church to Leppington. I am so grateful to have their support.”

Around 214 of men are diagnosed with prostate cancer each year in the South-West Sydney region.

David is hoping to raise $8,000 as part of his Walk for Him and has already raised over $6,000.

“My walk was dedicated to all the men in families in our region who have been impacted, supporting access to clinical trials and prostate cancer nurses provided by the Prostate Cancer Foundation,” he said.

“We know that awareness saves lives, improving action on early detection and treatment.”

The campaign ran from June 10-16 for Men’s Health Week, and it invited men and women to walk 25kms during that week in solidarity with men and families impacted by the disease.

“Over the past five years alone, more than 120,000 Australian men have been diagnosed with prostate cancer, and, tragically, more than 18,000 have died from the disease,” said PCFA’s CEO, Anne Savage.

“It’s a disease that takes a significant toll not just on men, but also on their partners and families, on their communities, and on the health of the nation.

“With more than 250,000 Australians impacted by a prostate cancer diagnosis, and more than 25,000 men likely to be diagnosed this year, community action is key to saving lives.”

For more information and to find a local support group, call 1800 220099 or go to www.prostate.org.au.

Harrington Park Over 55s Social Group

The Harrington Park property is owned by the estate of Mary, Lady Fairfax.

Lady Fairfax is believed to have been very involved in the design of the residential suburb, currently known as Harrington Park within the family estate, to ensure it was a people and familyfriendly environment to live in.

This included the funding of a social club for early retirees and other seniors, so that such residents of Harrington Park could get to know one another in a friendly, informal and low-key way.

The Harrington Park Over 55s Group Inc, also known as the Harrington Park Over 55s Social Group, was thus set up and continues its activities up to the present day.

The Group, as the name suggests, is open to men and women over the age of 55 who are no longer in the workforce but wish to maintain an active social life

These activities usually comprise of a monthly meeting on the first Monday of the month, other than on public holidays when it is held on the following Monday. After the routine of general business for about 15 to 20 minutes, a guest speaker or entertainer takes the stage for about 45 minutes. This is then followed by a sumptuous morning tea.

There are also raffle draws, and on special occasions like Melbourne Cup Day, Mothers’/Fathers’ Day etc, members enjoy a barbecue in lieu of the morning tea. As well, there are luncheon party outings and the occasional day bus trip during the rest of the month.

For further information regarding membership costs, venue and times, and contact details, look for the advertisement in this month’s edition of the Oran Park Gazette. r A great local group for over 55’s | Image: www.pexels.com | Article: Harrington Park Over 55s Group Inc

Rheem Australia Awards $65K in Grants to Support Apprentice Plumbers

Rheem Australia has awarded $60,000 to 20 deserving recipients from across the country, as part of the 2024 Rheem Apprentice Plumber Grants.

Established in 2012, the program aims to support up-and-coming apprentice plumbers in the progression of their studies and to help launch their plumbing careers.

21 year old Chelsea Cooper of Harrington Park is one of the 2024 Rheem Apprentice Plumber Grant Recipients.

Chelsea is a third-year apprentice who never thought she was going to be hired as there were a limited number of women in the industry.

“The support from my family helped me get through the moments I felt like giving up and trying something else, especially when I had people telling me I couldn’t do it or would never make it. Looking back, I’m so proud of how far I’ve come,” Chelsea said.

The grant will support Chelsea to continue her studies as she works towards her Certificate IV in Plumbing. Chelsea hopes to eventually start her own maintenance company.

Recipients receive $2,000 to assist with their TAFE/RTO fees and textbooks and a $1,000 tool voucher. To acknowledge the outstanding cohort, five individuals were also given a special $1,000 Recognition Award, bringing the total value of grants to $65,000.

“Since its inception the Rheem Apprentice Plumbers Grants has awarded more than $420,000 to worthy apprentices. This year, we increased the number of grants on offer from 10 to 20, doubling our annual investment in the future of the industry,” says John Collignon, Marketing Director at Rheem Australia.

"Feedback from our judging panel indicates that the sector is in safe hands. The level of dedication, passion, and commitment to excellence from apprentices is a clear sign that many are eager to make their mark through a career in plumbing," continues Mr Collignon.

To be considered for a grant, applicants were asked to share their personal career goals, the skills, and qualities they believe make a great plumber and how the industry can attract more apprentices.

Half (50 per cent) of this year’s recipients are of mature age (over 21) reflecting a growing trend for those switching careers to pursue a personal passion and the opportunity to contribute to their community in a meaningful way.

Greater gender representation and encouraging women to take up a trade continues to be a key talking point among apprentices. In a significant and positive step forward, 30 per cent of this year's grant beneficiaries are women, a 50 per cent increase on 2023.

A common theme across all applicants is the importance of a supportive environment and open communication, which many believe is key to encouraging others to get involved in the industry or commence an apprenticeship.

"This year’s participants reflect a new wave of plumbers entering the industry, showing great tenacity and diverse thinking. When combined with their strong work ethic and focus on self-growth we know they will have a lasting impact on our sector," says Mr Collignon.

"We would like to sincerely congratulate those who have received a grant, thank all of the applicants, their employers, TAFE and RTO teachers, and plumbing merchants for their support of the program," concludes Mr Collignon.

Roxy’s Pawesome Business

Treats are one of the highlights of being a pet owner. Many owners use them for training and providing a focus to reaffirm positive behaviour. In addition, many consider that it helps their connection with their pets. It is believed that around 90 per cent of dogs are motivated by food, this makes treats an adequate reward to offer.

Local student Roxy Stedman started her very own dog treat business in January 2023. The business is called "Doggy Delights".

“Roxy started her business as she wanted to save up enough money to go on a school trip to North Queensland, where she visited some remote indigenous schools, churches and communities. She enjoyed running her business so much that she decided to keep running it after the trip. She now has her sights set on saving money for a high school trip to Thailand!” said Emily Stedman, Roxy’s Mum.

Doggy Delights dog biscuits come in a range of flavours, including Sweet Potato, Carob, Yoghurt, Cheese, Banana and Blueberry.

Roxy is already looking to expand on her impressive range of dog treats.

“She has plans to expand her business to include "Sweet Pawtato Treats" which are delicious, chewy sweet potato chips that will make your doggie's day!” Emily smiled.

The latest data shows over 71% of dog owners are willing to spend more on their pet than on themselves. The average spent

on additional items other than food for their pets is almost $350.00 per year. Recent figures by Euromonitor International found that dog treats were one of the best performing categories in 2022, with retail value sales growing by 6% to $380 million in Australia. This represents an impressive increase in sales of $87.2 million since 2017. The report also forecasts that there will be a 13.1% rise in pet treat sales by 2027, with the total expected value to reach $1.7B (Euromonitor, 2022).

“Roxy would like to thank the local community who have supported and encouraged her business. So many wonderful small business owners have reached out and offered support and assistance to her, which has been amazing” she ended. Orders can be placed at doggydelightsorder@gmail.com.

It is always sad when members resign from Oran Park Probus Club due to declining health and mobility, especially those longstanding members who have contributed to the growth and success of the club. The committee can offer these people ‘non-active’ membership. They can keep up to date with what is happening by email, our newsletter and Facebook page, without having to attend meetings, activities or pay annual fees. Staying connected may help allay feelings of isolation and depression. If their circumstances change, they can rejoin the club ahead of other prospective new members.

New members who have joined us recently are settling in and participating in many of the activities. New members bring fresh ideas and enthusiasm, and we look forward to some taking on roles on the committee and being activity leaders.

Transition to retirement can be a challenging time for many people, especially those without hobbies to keep them busy. Friendship groups can disappear if you move or downsize to a new area. Why not give Probus a try? Probus groups throughout Australia are social groups that bring retirees together to enjoy activities and outings, in turn leading to new friendships and busy days!

Come as a visitor to one of our monthly meetings of Oran Park Probus Club. Listen to one of our guest speakers and hear about our various activities and outings. We enjoy regular ‘Coffee and Chat’, pub lunches and specialty dining events. Members may join the walking and trivia groups or attend movies, theatre outings, day trips or longer tours.

Thank goodness it stopped raining for those embers who went on a whale watching trip recently. They were treated to some amazing sights of whales breaching, and many an “Ooh” and “Ahh” was heard, whilst the photographers in the group produced some wonderful photographs.

Monthly Meetings of Oran Park Probus Club are held at Wests Lakeside Golf Club, 50 Raby Road, Gledswood Hills on the first Tuesday of the month, except November and January.

If you would like more information about Oran Park Probus Club, please contact the Club Secretary, email secretary. oranparkprobusclub@gmail.com.
