Oran Park Probus Club

Probus is about fun, fellowship, and friendship amongst like-minded people. For Oran Park Probus Club members, there were a lot of activities recently to promote that aim. Starting the month off was the craft group, followed by Coffee and Chat, a picnic in the park, brunch, barefoot bowls, walking group and a mystery car rally. A lot of fun, laughter, and good food along the way. There are Probus Clubs all over Australia and New Zealand. Probus membership is available to retired and semi-retired people within the community. Retirement can sometimes be a little difficult to adapt to after a busy working life. Work colleagues tend to drift away, and we have more time to ourselves. Probus can help fill that gap. You can look forward to making new friends and enjoy an active social life. Oran Park Probus Club holds its monthly meetings on the first Tuesday of the month, except January when there is no meeting and November, when the meeting is held on the second Tuesday, to avoid Melbourne Cup Day. We have a guest speaker for the first part of every meeting. This is a highlight of the meeting as topics are many and varied. Our next talk will be about the Joadja mining village. Future topics will cover the Campbelltown Hospital development and assistance dogs. Another highlight and a good opportunity to socialise, is to stay for lunch after the meeting at Wests Lakeside Golf Club. As a visitor, you are very welcome to attend a meeting, find out a bit more about Probus and decide whether Probus is something you would like to be part of. For further information, please contact the Secretary of Oran Park Probus Club, on 0410 758755 or email: oranpark@ probusclubs.com.au.

How Do We Get from Bob to Jesus? What do Jesus Christ and Bob the Builder have in common? I’m sure we could imagine all sorts of connections between the former carpenter from Nazareth and the BBC’s construction worker with a heart of gold. I want to show you it’s their names that link them. It may seem obvious to say, but “Christ” isn’t Jesus’s family name? Most of His life, Jesus would have been known as the Son of Joseph (His earthly father). The word ‘Christ’ takes the sounds of a Greek word - Christos - into English. It means - “the anointed one”. Perhaps we’re familiar with this phrase being used for those who are specially chosen to be the next in line for leadership. But even that is only a shadow of the original meaning. To be anointed in Jewish heritage was to be identified as a King. Actually, pouring oil on your head was a vital part of the process of becoming a King. But why Jesus ‘Christ’? We know Bob isn’t just any builder - he’s *the* Builder. There may be others who help out, but it’s always Bob who comes to the rescue. Jesus’s name is a bit like that. You see, Jesus is *the* Christ. That means that Jesus is without equal as a King - He’s the final and greatest King of the universe. So, to call the chippie from the back-blocks, “Jesus Christ,” is to elevate Him to a higher place. His name tells us something about His role and how we should respond to Him. Maybe you knew all that already? Maybe not. We run a course at NewLife for those who’d like to know more about Jesus. Our next one starts up at the church at 7:30pm on Tuesday August 10th. You’d be very welcome - even if you have a bob each way on whether God is really there. FAITH – ST MARY MACKILLOP CATHOLIC PARISH ORAN PARK

Article Written + Submitted by: Fr David Catterall MTh - Parish Priest @ St Mary MacKillop Catholic Parish Oran Park P: 02 4648 2226 W: www.marymackillopparish.org.au A: 94 Oran Park Drive, Oran Park NSW 2570 Facebook: www.facebook.com/oranparkparish Twitter: www.twitter.com/oranparkparish Some may recall that in a previous FAITH article, I mentioned a speech that was delivered back in 2017 at the University of NSW by the famous social researcher Dr Hugh Mackay. He said that the state of our nation actually starts in the street where you and I live. I must say, Hugh Mackay’s words are worth repeating in this 'Covid normal' of mid-2021: ““We don't know our neighbours” has become a cliché of contemporary urban life. A disturbing piece of research has shown that only one-third of Australians say they trust their neighbours. Clearly, that could not possibly mean that 65 per cent of neighbours are untrustworthy – what it must mean is that most people in our society don't know their neighbours well enough to have learnt to trust them. What I am suggesting is that when we lose sight of our role as neighbours, the health of the neighbourhood suffers. And when the health of the neighbourhood suffers, we all suffer. When we ignore our biological destiny as social creatures – people who need each other; people for whom a sense of belonging is fundamental to our wellbeing; people who utterly rely on communities to define us, sustain us and protect us – then our level of anxiety is likely to rise”1 No matter if we have lived in this area for many years, or have only just arrived and are making a new home here in Oran Park and the surrounding suburbs and estates, I encourage all of us to allow Dr Hugh Mackay’s words to challenge us that we will strive, even though we live busy lives and we’re building our homes in busy streets, to become ‘good neighbours’ who see those we live around and work with not as strangers but friends. r 1. Annual

Camden Country Quilters Guild will be holding their Annual Exhibition this month, where they showcase their quilts and craft. The Exhibition will be held on the weekend of the 31st of July 2021 at the Camden Civic Centre. They started in 1990, as a group that wanted to quilt and share their craft with others. Since then, they have fundraised and made quilts for many local organisations in our community. Over the years, these have included Camden Hospitals Palliative Care, Campbelltown Cancer Unit, our local bush fire brigades, and retirement villages where they have given many quilts for the residents to snuggle under. They have also supported Turning Point, Kids of Macarthur, flood, and fire victims and many more organisations in years gone by. The local group meet the 1st Monday of the month at 7:30pm at the Undercroft Camden Civic Centre, on Oxley Street in Camden. Camden Country Quilters Guild also have Sit and Sew on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of the month and Community Quilt Day on the 3rd Saturday of the month. Their community days are dedicated to making the many quilts that they donate into the community. Including this is hosting workshops with tutors who assist in teaching you new skills. For more information, please contact Chris Boardman at boardmanc612@gmail.com or on 0413 762028. r A selection of beautiful quilts made by the group | Image/Article: Camden Country Quilters Guild

It’s a Date! A Doggie Date

Doggie Dates is a free and friendly on leash social walking group for you and your dog and we have one right here in the Macarthur. Campbelltown – Camden Doggie Dates meet for a formal walk once a month on a weekend day, with the location, time and day varying. The group currently has an informal walk in Harrington Park on a Monday afternoon and in Macquarie Fields on a Tuesday afternoon. They are open to more informal walks. Informal walks are organised by members. The local group has a Facebook page with over 2,000 members, with anywhere from 12-40 turning up with their dogs for walks. The page is quite active and is used for a variety of things such as a general chat about dogs, questions, information, and the sharing of events. Many people who do not come on the walks also follow the page and do the walks that they post in their own time. “Doggie Dates started in 2015, after people commented on my posts of a few friends and I walking our dogs in different areas around Macarthur. We have now branched out to four areas in NSW. I have always had a passion for bringing people together and responsible pet ownership and this does both! As a group, we are not focused on hard walks but more about socialisation and fun in a group setting, reaching all different age groups. This was always what it was about” explained Te’re Melrose of Doggie Dates NSW. Campbelltown – Camden Doggie Dates members participate in many local activities throughout the year. “We have stalls in various places, with the focus being to reach out to the community. We just participated in Paws in the Park and had a great time. We run many fun walks such as Halloween Walk, Christmas Pawty, and celebrate major events of members including wedding walks, baby showers and birthdays. We have had picnics as well. You name it, we are willing to get involved in it” Te’re said. “All pets deserve the opportunity to get outdoors and mix with other people and pets. We recognise that not all pets are social, but we do not discriminate. We have seen incredible changes in dogs in a noticeably short time, attending our walks. If everyone gives them some space, they quickly start to feel less threatened and calm down. There is no judgement, and our members have a positive attitude” ended Te’re. For more information, search Campbelltown Camden Doggie Dates on Facebook. “Time In Versus Time Out”

Most of us would have heard of giving kids a ‘time out’ when they’ve done something wrong. You may have experienced sitting alone as a child, in some boring and bare corner of the room, waiting for a parent or teacher to allow you back. ‘Time out’ has been a staple of the child behaviour management tool kit for decades, but many are now asking- is there a better way? The logic behind ‘time out’ is that most kids hate it, so they will behave ‘well’ in order to avoid it. However, what we now know from decades of research into child development, is kids don’t usually set out to be ‘bad’. Often, kids do bad things when they are stressed out. This may be because they are tired or hungry, or they can’t solve an important problem. Recent advances in brain imaging have shown us that a spike in stress reduces functioning in key areas of the brain involved in thinking ahead and considering consequences. These same areas of the brain are already under development in children and teens. So, add a little too much stress, and you have a recipe for disaster! Kids are hard-wired to connect with the important big people in their life so they can survive until they are old enough to take care of themselves. When kids see us paying attention to them, and giving them care, they know they are safe. Safety creates calm, and calm brains can solve problems without hurting anyone or breaking anything. ‘Time in’ is a strategy that uses your relationship with your child to help them settle and think through the situation. What it looks like is taking your child somewhere safe, sitting down and chatting about what went wrong. It’s not about free passes for bad behaviour. It’s about understanding why the behaviour happened, and what can be learned- how can they manage this problem better in the future? It can also involve discussing ways to right the wrong, such as apologising to a hurt sibling or replacing something that was broken. r

Gregory Hills Amongst 44 New and Upgraded Schools The NSW Government is increasing its historic investment in new and upgraded schools, delivering funding for 44 new and upgraded school projects announced as part of the 2021/22 Budget. This includes funding for 30 projects that were prioritised for planning and 14 new works in areas of high need. Premier Gladys Berejiklian said the school building pipeline has already invested billions of dollars into new and upgraded schools, with 50 delivered last year alone. “This budget continues our historic school infrastructure investment with an additional $2.1 billion spend to deliver new and upgraded schools across NSW,” Ms Berejiklian said. “Since 2019, this government has delivered more than 100 new and upgraded schools – it’s an important achievement, but we are not done”. The 2021/22 Budget will include funding to deliver: • A new primary school in Gregory Hills • A new primary school at Westmead • The new selective high school in Southwest Sydney • The relocation of Wee Waa High School • A new high school in Marsden Park • Jordan Springs Public School – Stage 2 Treasurer Dominic Perrottet said the government is providing for families across the state and in growth areas. “Communities have never seen investment in education like this before, including in high growth areas. Western Sydney alone is seeing an additional $2 billion investment in new works,” Mr Perrottet said. Minister for Education Sarah Mitchell said that the investment in schools is an investment in the future of NSW. “This budget shows yet again that we are a government that delivers on its commitments. We plan for schools – and then, once planning is complete, we fund them for construction,” Ms Mitchell said. “This historic program began in 2017 and since then, we have spent more than $7 billion on new and upgraded schools. The additional funds in this Budget grow the pipeline to $7.9 billion worth of investment in new and upgraded schools over the next four years, making this a $15 billion school building program. “Across NSW, thousands and thousands of students are benefitting from new and upgraded schools, and this will continue under this government”. These initiatives will be announced as part of the 2021/22 Budget with the NSW Government continuing its program to deliver 215 new and upgraded schools representing an injection of $7.9 billion into the NSW economy over the next four years.

Wests Launches the Porchlight Program with Blue Wren House

Wests Group Macarthur is proud to become the first official partner of the Blue Wren House - Camden Women’s Shelter (BWH CWS) The Porchlight Program, ahead of their Shelter opening in November 2021. The demand for crisis accommodation is high in Australia with more than 56,000 women homeless each night and more than one in two turned away from crisis accommodation due to limited spaces. Once complete, BWH CWS will feature a completely refurbished three-bedroom cottage as well as a brand new two-bedroom second dwelling on site that will provide safe, supported accommodation for five women and their dependent children who are escaping domestic violence or homelessness. Wests Group Macarthur has committed to $20,000 per year for three years to the BWH CWS The Porchlight Program, which exists to help cover expenses associated with keeping the Shelter operational each year. Aside from the food and accommodation expenses, the funds, delivered via ClubGRANTS go towards caseworker

management, medical, legal, educational, and other crucial support programs needed for the Women and Children to start anew. Scott Taylor, Chair of BWH CWS commented on the tangible difference the funds will make sharing, “A commitment of this amount translates to covering a portion of the funding required for our vital case workers who will help with women and potentially up to 60 children across the three-year period. The funds will make a huge difference to the lives of countless number of people relying on shelter services”. He continued, “The Board is so grateful for the incredible generosity of Wests which helps guarantee we can keep the welcoming porchlight lit and deliver the comfort and security to those escaping desperate or DV situations”. Wests Group Macarthur Executive team member Leanne Craig said, “Wests Group Macarthur is honoured to be an early supporter of The Porchlight Program and provide funding for both the launch and longevity of this important project. This is an incredibly worthy cause, and we feel very strongly about the impact the program will offer to those most vulnerable”. BWH CWS are currently seeking support of local businesses, tradespeople, and suppliers to assist in the finishing touches to the restoration and opening of the shelter. FROM THEWORD EDITOR THE LAST True to form, COVID continues to keep us on our toes. With recent outbreaks across Sydney, we are reminded to stay vigilant. July is always a great month, not only is it the month I celebrate another year of memories and experiences I have gained along the way but it's also a timely reminder that we're 'almost' half way through Winter. Although I do love the opportunity to recharge during Winter. Life seems to slow down a little, allowing us some time to soak up the warmth of the heater, devour our favourite home-made soups and catch up on Netflix (am I right?). For the school parents out there, enjoy the school holidays, it won't be long before they come to an end once and for all and you'll be yearning for the 'good old days' to return. 'Until it's your turn, keep clapping for others!' Time to catch up on all the latest happenings in Your Community News.
