Every Tree Counts Council is continuing its mission to plant 1,700 street and park trees by the end of December 2022, as part of its Every Tree Counts planting projects. The projects have seen over 420 street trees planted throughout the Camden area since its launch in August 2021, with hundreds more programmed to be planted over the coming months. Trees play an important role in creating great spaces for our community and contribute to the green canopy of our LGA by providing vital shade and reducing ambient temperatures. Mayor of Camden, Cr Therese Fedeli, said the trees were important to increasing the urban tree canopy in the Camden LGA. “Not only do trees add to our beautiful environment and make it greener, but they also play an important role in cooling the suburb, providing shade and reducing the urban heat island effect, Cr Fedeli said. “We’re also giving residents an opportunity to Love Your Tree and adopt either their new or existing street tree by their home. “The first 300 residents who register to adopt their tree will receive a care package to use to help ensure their tree thrives.” To Love Your Tree, register at bit.ly/ loveyourtreecamden. Both Every Tree Counts and Love Your Tree projects are part of the Greening Our City grant program that is proudly funded by the NSW Government in association with Local Government NSW. r Article: Camden Council

Get Ready For Vivid Sydney 2022 Sydney has lit up and visitors are reminded to plan their visit to enjoy the largest festival of light, music and ideas in the Southern Hemisphere. Minister for Enterprise, Investment and Trade, Tourism and Sport and Western Sydney Stuart Ayres said it was full steam ahead with Vivid Sydney 2022 now underway. “With more than 200 events scheduled, there is something for everyone,” Mr Ayres said. “The Vivid Sydney 2022 program bursts with exciting events, incredible music performances and fantastic light installations and 3D projections. Vivid Sydney draws millions of people into the Harbour City’s CBD, which will provide a shot in the arm for businesses and a smile on the faces of festival-goers. “Visitors should be mindful of the festival’s popularity on weekends, with

Monday to Wednesday nights the best choice for a more relaxed atmosphere. “This is a time to come together, to shake off the last couple of years and to get reacquainted with the beauty of Sydney and be inspired and amazed by Vivid Sydney 2022.” Minister for Transport and Veterans David Elliott said public transport was not only the best way to travel to and from this spectacular event, it would also be part of the action this year. “For the first time ever, Central Station and the Goods Line Tunnel, a forgotten historical landmark, will be part of Vivid 2022, offering an illuminating glimpse into Sydney’s rich transport history,” Mr Elliott said. “The Goods Line Tunnel beneath Central Station, which first opened in 1855, will be transformed into a modern convergence of lights, lasers and smoke effects with more than 100 laser lights - the largest laser installation in Vivid Sydney history. “Central Station’s iconic ceiling and clock tower will also be lit up while the Grand Concourse will be the stage for a series of free live music performances each Saturday night during the festival. “Extra public transport services will operate during the festival as large numbers of visitors are expected to travel to the CBD to enjoy Australia’s largest light show spectacular,” Mr Elliott said. Mr Elliott said there would be some changes to public transport services during the festival as a safety precaution to manage the crowds expected around the harbour foreshore. Buses that usually run to and from Circular Quay will be relocated to stops at Martin Place on Fridays from 6 pm and weekends from 5 pm. Light rail services will run until late each night of the festival, but will not run between Town Hall and Circular Quay from 6 pm on Fridays and 5 pm on weekends. On Saturday nights and Sunday 12 June during the long weekend, train passengers will not be able to alight at Circular Quay Station between 6 pm and 11 pm, festival attendees should alight at Wynyard, St James or Martin Place stations instead and walk to the harbour. Vivid Sydney runs for 23 days until Saturday 18 June and guests can enjoy the Light Walk each night from 6 – 11pm. r

Camden Council is one of the first local government organisations in greater Sydney to introduce an electric commercial lawn mower in its fleet. Mayor of Camden, Cr Therese Fedeli, said she was excited for Council’s newest fleet vehicle. “I am so proud to be leading the way for local government organisations by adding an electric lawn mower to our fleet,” Cr Fedeli said. “Electric mowers are a much better alternative to the traditional petrolpowered versions for our environment. They are quieter and cleaner and don’t use any fossil fuels such as hydraulics or oils. “This mower will not produce any emissions during operation.” The lawn mower has seven to eight hours of continuous run time and will charge overnight at Council’s Depot. In addition to introducing an electric lawn mower to the fleet, Council is also undertaking a range of projects to help achieve Gold Partner recognition in the Sustainability Advantage Program and show our commitment to the NSW Governments ‘Net Zero’ plan including: • Installation of solar panels on suitable Council facilities; • Roll out of energy efficient street lighting in partnership with Endeavour Energy; • Undertake and inventory of greenhouse gas emissions and develop a Net Zero Strategy; • Sourcing renewable energy for Council sites; and • Installing 4 new electric vehicle charging stations at locations across the Camden area. Playing Tiny

Play Tiny is a sensory playgroup for children aged 5 months to 5 years of age and now has two local locations. The locations include Kissaten Coffee House in Gledswood Hills on Monday and Wednesday mornings and Thomas Donavan Reserve at Gregory Hills on Tuesday mornings. Each session goes for one hour and it costs $13.99 to participate. Play Tiny was created by Harrington Park mother of two Nasma Adeeb in early 2021. “My children started school and I found that I had some extra time on my hands. I had also started to do these activities at family parties and kids loved it. I thought I could help other kids enjoy their time learning whilst using their motor skills” said Nasma to the Oran Park Gazette. “It’s priceless to see how much they have fun and to see that their Mums don’t have to deal with the mess afterwards” she smiled. Nasma has found that having two children under the age of 10 herself has given her a great understanding of the types of activities that children enjoy. “As a full-time mother, I have always been interested in playing with my children and researching exciting activities for them to do” Nasma reflected. She explained that groups like Play Tiny are perfect for not only children, but their parents and carers as well. “It’s good for the children as it helps with their motor skills, mental development, social skills, and creative expression. At the same time, it’s wonderful for Mums to meet and socialise” she stated. To learn more about Play Tiny, visit www.play-tiny.com.

Geale Guides the Next Generation With two middleweight world championships to his name, Daniel Geale has climbed the heights of boxing. He is now passing on his knowledge and experience to the next generation of boxers and believes that Australian boxing is in good hands. The Harrington Park local is keeping himself busy with boxing and fitness. He currently teaches boxing at Bujutsu Martial Arts in Smeaton Grange, and does some work at UBX in Gregory Hills, which is fitness/strength/cardio based. He also has a personal gym set up for private training sessions. “Training and coaching are very enjoyable and rewarding. I’m coaching some fighters and passing on my experience and helping guide people on the path they choose” Geale explained. Away from life as a professional boxer, Daniel finds coaching and competing to be quite different. “They’re very different from one another. When competing, I felt I had to be very focussed and driven myself. When coaching, I think you have to be a lot more selfless and understand that there are many different personalities to connect to and get the best out of them individually” he said. Daniel enjoys watching the current crop of Australian boxers taking on the sport. “Boxing in Australia at the moment is very exciting and we have a lot of good talent. George Kambosos won a huge unification fight and will be defending it very soon, which is great for Australian boxing. We have many others doing amazing things like Tim Tszyu, Justis Huni and even our bronze medallist from the Olympics Harry Garside, who will be looking for the big fights” Daniel beamed. He finds it difficult to pick a favourite boxer amongst the group. “We have a lot of great fighters in Australia, so it’s hard to choose a favourite. I can’t wait to see how many of them handle stepping it up. Exciting times” he ended.

Jordan Shares His Voice with Australia 23-year-old Jordan Tavita of Oran Park made it to the finals of this year’s The Voice. Choosing to sing Man in the Mirror by Michael Jackson in the blind auditions, Jordan had all four coaches turn their chairs to a standing ovation. He later chose Guy Sebastian as his coach, joining Team Guy. Amazingly, this was also Jordan’s first experience singing to an audience. “This whole experience has definitely been life changing. I never thought I could do something like this. It was exhilarating. It has been so much fun being able to sing in front of four very talented singers” said Jordan to the Oran Park Gazette. Jordan, who is the youngest of five children, was brought up in church where he found his voice at a young age. As a call centre worker by day, it is not uncommon to find him singing between calls. Back home, Jordan enjoys getting out and about in the many parks that Oran Park has to offer. It is here that he finds himself relaxing and clearing his head. His favourite local place to dine at is The Grid Café and Restaurant. “It’s a great place to go for breakfast. With my parents living in Brisbane, I go there when my family come to visit me” he replied. He also loves to cook for his large, traditional family when he has the chance. Jordan is thankful for all the support he has received since being on The Voice. “Thank you to everyone who has followed and supported me on my journey. I have nothing but gratitude for all of you. I would like to be a role model for the younger generation and someone to look up to. Don’t be afraid to follow your dreams” Jordan smiled. r Feature Article: [Cover + Above] Jordan Tavita | Image: Channel 7

Infant Mental Health Awareness Week: What Do Babies Need Most?

Babies have long been misunderstood. When the field of psychology emerged in the early twentieth century, the earliest psychologists thought maybe infants just needed a reliable food source. Later, psychologists John Bowlby and Mary Ainsworth first sketched out the idea of “attachment”. Attachment refers to an infant’s need to connect emotionally with their primary caregiver. Babies know they are at the mercy of an adult to have their needs met. In the first 18 months of life, infants cannot even carry themselves from one place to another, let alone feed themselves! Babies communicate by facial expressions and movements. These “cues” signal an unmet need. For example, a baby may jerk its body and pucker its lips when it needs the breast or bottle. Babies experience optimal mental and physical health when their parents read their cues and respond appropriately most of the time. Thanks to brain imaging, we now know there is a massive brain growth in the first 5 years. A newborn’s brain weighs around 400 grams (approx. the size of an orange). By the age of 3, the size of a child’s brain has more than doubled to about 1100 grams (approx. the size of a pineapple). Experiencing a warm and responsive relationship with a parent in the early years builds healthy brains. Parents often feel confused or frustrated when their baby cries, especially when there is a lot of crying! Crying expresses the need for physical and emotional closeness to parents. Babies experience a lot of stress if they are left to cry alone. Large, frequent doses of hormones associated with the stress response, such as cortisol, can interfere with brain growth. Therefore, it is important to minimise stress by responding to baby’s cries promptly whenever possible. In summary, what a baby needs most is you. If you are struggling with anything mentioned in this article, you can consult an early childhood nurse by calling Tresillian Parent Help Line on 1300 272 73. Infant Mental Health Awareness Week runs every June to highlight the importance of babies' emotional wellbeing and development. Find out more at aaimh.org.au.

Soulful Australian country songsmith, Adam Brand, has been revealed as the headline act at Camden’s first country music festival. “I’ll be performing a lot of older songs from my albums over the years, but I’ve also just released a brand-new single called All or Nothing which I’ll do on the night,” Brand said. “I love being a part of something from day one – how great would it be if this festival turns into something huge and becomes an annual event? Then I can say I was there for the first one! “I’ve been to Camden a few times before and I’ve actually performed there once. I’m hoping to see some pretty slick dancing on the night! “It’s exciting to see live music coming back this year [and] it’s even more exciting when an entire town and local council all pull together to put on events like this. I’m honoured to have been invited to [the] first festival.” Brand won’t be the only one performing up a storm – he will be accompanied by beloved Australian singer-songwriter and runner-up of the first season of Australian Idol, Shannon Noll, and all-female country band, Southbound XO. Boots n’ Beats will be held on Saturday 18 June, 3-9pm, at Camden Town Farm. The highly anticipated event will include: • Food and drink stalls, including local breweries, smoked meats, corn on the cob and burgers; • Product stalls; • Line dancing; • Roving entertainment; • Animal nurseries; • Pony rides; • Country craft activities for kids; and • Boots n’ Beats branded cowboy hats. Mayor of Camden, Cr Theresa Fedeli, said she enjoyed seeing the guessing competition play out on Council’s Facebook page. “We asked residents to guess who the headline act would be, and every correct answer would go in the draw to win a food truck voucher to be redeemed on the night,” Cr Fedeli said. “It was so great seeing all the guesses – some spot on and some very far-fetched! It was just so nice to have everyone get involved and get excited about the event. “The feedback from our residents has been overwhelmingly positive. It seems a local country music festival has been high on the wish-list for some time now, and we’re thrilled to be able to bring that to life. “The countdown is truly on – and I’m really looking forward to popping on some cowboy boots and celebrating with you all! “I am honoured that we will be supporting flood relief efforts at Boots n’ Beats! Stay tuned for our Charity Partners announcement.” For more information about the event, visit bootsnbeats. com.au r A music festival for the whole family | Image/Article: Camden Council

First Look at Concept Designs for New Primary School in Gregory Hills The Gregory Hills community will have the first look at designs for its new primary school, with artist’s impressions being released by the NSW Government. The new primary school at Gregory Hills will provide teaching spaces for approximately 1,000 students from Kindergarten to Year 6. The project will deliver 44 classrooms, four support learning spaces, administration and staff facilities, canteen, multi-purpose hall, library, covered outdoor learning area, landscaped outdoor learning areas and outdoor play spaces including a sports court and a playing field. Member for Camden Peter Sidgreaves said he was delighted to mark this important milestone for the new primary school at Gregory Hills. “I’m excited to see these artist’s impressions. They help us imagine what the new primary school in Gregory Hills will look like,” Mr Sidgreaves said. “This new primary school will greatly benefit the Gregory Hills community for generations to come”. The school, which will be located at Gregory Hills Drive, will include fit-for-purpose learning spaces and core facilities to support the growing area. Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) methodology, an innovative design and construction process which combines off-site manufacture and on-site assembly that is sustainable and delivers schools quickly and safely, will be used to construct the school. Gregory Hills Primary School is currently in the State Significant Development Application Process (SSDA), subject to approval, it is expected that construction will commence towards the end of the year.

LONG DAY CARE

BEFORE & AFTER SCHOOL CARE

Minister for Education Sarah Mitchell said she was pleased to see the artist impressions of the new primary school in Gregory Hills. “I’m proud that we are continuing our record investment in school infrastructure across NSW. We are working hard to provide schools with modern facilities designed specifically for their community,” Ms Mitchell said. A community information booth at Gregory Hills Town Centre was held last month, providing members of our community the opportunity to ask questions and learn more about the upgrade. The NSW Government is committed to working with schools, stakeholders, and the community to deliver the best possible learning facilities for the new primary school in Gregory Hills. As part of this process, consultation will be undertaken as part of the Social Impact Assessment. A survey is open for engagement and feedback from the community at https:///survey.zohopublic.com.au/zs/ c7BtEM and will close on Friday 10 June 2022.

Rocking the Holidays with Kid’s Day Camp

“Mum, I’m bored.” If you’ve ever faced this wonderful line from your kids, then NewLife has a solution for at least one day of the July school holidays. We call it our Kid’s Day Camp (KDC) and it will run from 8:45am to 4:30pm on Friday July 8th. This year, the theme is ‘Rock Star’ as we consider just who it is that we should be making famous. All the kids who come are invited to dress up to the theme to make our day even more enjoyable. We can’t wait to see your creative outfits... and hair! The camp is open to children from Prep through to Year 6 and will be held in our NewLife church building on Central Avenue in Oran Park. We’ve been running these camps for the last 10 years and last year, we were fully booked with 120 kids coming to have a fantastic day filled with fun, adventure, crafts, games, and teaching about Jesus. The cost is $37 per child, and this will include their food for the day and all the craft material. If you’ve got siblings, there are family pricing options available, and all this information is waiting for you on our website at www.newlifeanglican.org.au. Just like last year, we anticipate that the camp will book out quickly, so don’t hesitate to jump on our site and book tickets for your children and their best mate. Article Written + Submitted by: Fr David Catterall MTh - Parish Priest @ St Mary MacKillop Catholic Parish Oran Park P: 02 4648 2226 W: www.marymackillopparish.org.au A: 94 Oran Park Drive, Oran Park NSW 2570 Facebook: www.facebook.com/oranparkparish Twitter: www.twitter.com/oranparkparish We are truly blessed here in Oran Park and the surrounding suburbs, to have people from many different cultures, backgrounds and nationalities making a home here. During this month, from 19-25 June, we mark Refugee Week. That is, an annual opportunity “to promote greater awareness of refugees, the issues they face, and the contributions refugees are making to the Australian community”. As the Resource Kit produced for this Week says, Refugee Week 2022 is an “opportunity to hit the reset button on how we behave towards one another. The importance of human connections has been underscored by the pandemic and such lessons can help us in so many ways. We can draw upon shared hardship to heal wounds, to learn from each other and to move forward. Healing can occur through storytelling, through community and also through realisation of our intrinsic interconnectedness as individuals … Let us make 2022 much more than just a footnote in the pandemic years, let us heal together and emerge a more fulfilled and connected society”. As Fr Stephen Hackett MSC, General Secretary of the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference, once said: “When the men and women of nations feel under threat from forces that seem beyond their control – pandemic, climate change, global economy, terrorism – it is easy to see why they retreat into a stance that is closed and defensive, and which excludes others – a sort of nationalist version of the individualism that makes people self-centred. Yet Jesus has shown us another way; the only way. It is a way that leads us towards an ever wider “we” by helping us see our world and its peoples as God sees us all and loves us all”. For more information on Refugee Week, go to www.refugeeweek.org.au. Also, more information can be found on the website of the Australian Catholic Migrant and Refugee Office at www.acmro. catholic.org.au.

Our Local Men’s Shed Men’s Shed Narellan Incorporated was formed by the Rotary Club of Narellan Inc. and was officially opened in October 2013. The group currently has 70 members. The Men’s Shed has its building in the grounds of the Macarthur Centre for Sustainable Living (MCSL) located at 1 Mt Annan Drive, Mt Annan (opposite Flower Power). The shed is currently open on Tuesday, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays between 8am to 1pm. On Tuesdays, there is an optional BBQ breakfast for $5 from 7am to 7.30 am. There is an initial joining fee of $10 plus an annual membership fee for 2022 on a reducing sliding scale depending on the calendar quarter in which you join, i.e., January to March $40, April to June $30, July to September $20 and last quarter of year $10. They have a number of activities for members including woodwork, metalwork, welding, lapidary, gardening, chatting, and having a cuppa (coffee/tea). “The most enjoyable part of being a member of the men’s shed is the mateship and camaraderie. Men’s sheds support and promote good mental health and well-being for men. The shed provides an opportunity for men to learn new skills and stay active post-work, as well as being able to participate in worthwhile projects for themselves, local community members and community organisations” said the Narellan Men’s Shed to the Oran Park Gazette. For more information about the group, search Narellan Men’s Shed on Facebook, send an email to mensshednarellan@ yahoo.com.au or call them directly at the shed on 02 8091 1511. r Narellan Men’s Shed | Image: Men’s Shed Narellan Inc.

FROM THEWORD EDITOR THE LAST Here we are in June with, not just a new month, but a new Australian Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese. We welcome Albo and congratulate our local Federal MP’s who have been elected to represent our communities. And, of course, Winter is now upon us. Fireplaces, hot chocolate, and warm blankets are keeping the cold chill at bay. It’s also the perfect opportunity to put your feet up and enjoy the June edition of ‘Your Community News’. Whether it’s Kid’s Corner, Paws A While or Health Matters, there’s something for everyone of all ages! We’ve been bringing local news and businesses direct to the letterboxes of over 27,000 homes across 20 suburbs and 83,000 readers for over 23 years; we value our advertisers and readers who continue to make this possible. We hope that you continue to reach your goals and beyond, as we head towards the second part of the year. Michele Ruiz once said, “If people are doubting how far you can go, go so far that you can’t hear them anymore”.
