Champagne, Cars & Guy Sebastian An exclusive VIP Grand Opening Night at the new Clintons Toyota and Lexus of Macarthur dealership in Gregory Hills saw many well-known faces make their way into our local area. Owner Mario Kordovolos paid tribute in his opening speech; “to the generations of local families including the Perich, Vitocco, Fordham, Dickinson, Scarce and Marsden families that have been very active in the growth and development of the region, contributing to employment and opportunities for our community. This building really is a tribute to those families and to our staff.” The night was an abundance of local talent with the winner of The Voice Australia, Alfie Arcuri, lending his voice, while the night ended with a bang when the one and only Guy Sebastian took to the stage. Guy’s praise for the Kordovolos family did not go unnoticed, “Everyone that knows the family knows how they do business. I’m actually a friend and a customer and have bought many Toyota's from them. I'm doing this for love, not money. This is free because of how they've always treated me!” Mingling in the crowd were Camden Mayor Lara Symkowiak, influential known celebrities including ex-Australian Cricketer Michael Clarke, Guy Sebastian, Alfie Arcuri, Jayden Sierra, Steve Roach, local business owners and customers.  Music to our ears! Chivalry Not Dead

Gone are the days of chivalry and gentlemen opening doors, or has it? The world we live in today is run by social media, iPhone’s, Netflix and busy working lives. We often lack the ability to find time or reason to interact with our peers, children or family members which has unfortunately led to a lack in interpersonal skills, particularly amongst our younger generation. Looking further into this, we have witnessed our male population being less familiar with the simple, courteous, confident and chivalrous behaviour that we may have seen twenty or thirty years ago. Thanks to Scott Taylor, there is hope in turning this around and setting a better example for our young men of Macarthur, a group that has been founded by the local Harrington Park resident. So, what is the group 'Young Men of Macarthur' all about? It’s a community based organisation where young men and boys can come and learn life skills from a variety of speakers in a risk free and supportive environment. There are fortnightly sessions that take place educating on different topics.

When asking Steve how it came about, this was his reply; “I saw an article and some pictures about a teacher in the USA who got business shirts and ties for a group of students and was running a group teaching them how to act maturely, shake hands and make eye contact when they spoke. It really resonated with me. I thought I could get together a group and help pass on real life skills and old fashioned manners to young men”. The group also aims to help young men who may not have positive male role models in their lives or fathers who may simply be too busy to provide them basic life skills. Skills such as how to shave, how to change oil and water in a car, cook a good meal, treat a lady with courtesy and respect and how to prepare for that first job interview. Due to the members of this wonderful community donating their time and knowledge, all these sessions have been made possible at no expense to the young men or their families. Steve would also like to mention the generosity and incredible support of Nadene from Gledswood Homestead where the sessions are held. If you would like to attend a session, get involved or want to know more, check out the Young Men of Macarthur Facebook page or contact Steve direct on 0416 167 761.  Scott Taylor, volunteers and young men attending a session at

FAITH – NEWLIFE ANGLICAN ORAN PARK

Article Written + Submitted by: Lead Pastor Stuart Starr @ New Life Anglican Church W: newlifeanglican.org.au E: stuart@ newlifeanglican.org.au A: Cnr Central Avenue + Marcus Loane Way, Oran Park

A Fortunate Universe I love looking at the night sky. You don’t have to be a scientist to appreciate its beauty, but there is much more to the Universe than its good looks. For scientists, the goal is to unveil the inner workings of nature, the rules and properties that dictate how the bits and pieces of the cosmos move and interact. As for mere mortals like me, I often find that my mind naturally drifts to considering my place in the vast sea of lights that are galaxies and suns unimaginably far away from us. To help us properly consider our place we have a very exciting evening lined up at NewLife Anglican Church on March 15th. On the night we’ll be featuring a presentation from Sydney University Astrophysicist and co-author of A Fortunate Universe - Dr Luke Barnes. Dr Barnes will take us on a tour of the cosmos, from its smallest building blocks to its largest structures. Humanity, we will see, relies on a remarkable set of circumstances that allow us to ponder our place in space and time. Dr Barnes is a postdoctoral researcher at the Sydney Institute for Astronomy, University of Sydney. His university medal from the University of Sydney helped him earn a scholarship to complete a Ph.D. at Cambridge. He has published papers in the field of galaxy formation and on the fine-tuning of the Universe for life so he comes to us uniquely equipped to guide our reflections. Following his presentation there’ll be a chance to open up the floor and ask questions - something I know lots of us would love the chance to do.

So please put the night aside. You can find details of the evening on our website by clicking through the Fortunate Universe banner. Twinkle, twinkle, little star is a great place to start as kids looking skyward. On March 15th I hope you’ll bring your adult mind along to consider exactly how they (and we) came to be in this very fortunate universe. Stuart – New life Anglican Church

Women with Altitude in Macarthur!

Women with Altitude commenced in 2012. It was the 2nd incarnation of this network, the first Women with Altitude ran from 2002-2007 and were the first network for females in Western Sydney. Founder, Andrea Turner-Boys, had the vision to bring women together in a non-competitive environment and work together to help each other succeed. The ways that they do this is to hold events for inspiring speakers, encourage networking, and share experiences and advice. In 2014 as the community began to grow, they expanded into different regions and started local chapters, opening in Macarthur in 2016. “We began Altitude Networking as we recognised that we needed local places to connect our community. Women would share with us that they felt more comfortable in smaller groups and we know how intimidating it can feel at large networking events, so we tried a different approach. The benefits of meeting on a regular basis are that new people are always welcomed. Trust and connection can be built more quickly which allows for

greater sharing of ideas and collaboration” says Andrea. “There are so many women now leaving corporate life, setting up a family and moving into our region than ever before. Many start a business as a hobby and then want to grow it larger to make a contribution to their family without going back to full-time work and inflexible hours. The reality though is that business is a hard slog, especially if you are also raising a family. We want to help women be successful, and when we share our knowledge and support others, everybody wins” explained Andrea. Their Altitude Networking Groups are hosted by local Ambassadors and local Macarthur women who are in business and want to make a contribution to a community. They have a ‘Shine’ speaker, which is a local person who shares their story or advice based on their expertise. They have some fun networking activities, and offer individuals who have products to showcase their creativity and ingenuity. Altitude Networking meets every three weeks on a Wednesday morning in Camden. It's a friendly group of women. Come along as a guest, call 0414 348 377 or visit womenwithaltitude.com.au.  The Altitude Networking Macarthur Group | Image: Kirsten Flavell Photography

FAITH – ST MARY MACKILLOP CATHOLIC PARISH ORAN PARK Article Written + Submitted by: Fr David Catterall MTh - Parish Priest @ St Mary MacKillop Catholic Parish Oran Park | P: 02 4648 2226 W: www.marymackillopparish.org.au A: 94 Oran Park Drive, Oran Park NSW 2570 Facebook: www.facebook.com/ oranparkparish Twitter: www.twitter.com/oranparkparish

As some of you may be aware, over the past few years, on the anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi’s death the University of NSW has organised for an oration to be delivered by a person whose life’s work exemplifies the ideals of Gandhi. This year's oration was delivered by the famous social researcher Dr Hugh Mackay who said that the state of our nation actually starts in the street where you and I live. I must say, as someone now living and working here in this exponentially growing area of the Macarthur, I was very struck and challenged by one particular section of Hugh Mackay’s speech. He said: “We don't know our neighbours” has become a cliché of contemporary urban life … A disturbing piece of research … has shown that only one-third of Australians say they trust their neighbours. Clearly, that could not possibly mean that 65 per cent of neighbours are untrustworthy – what it must mean is that most people in our society don't know their neighbours well enough to have learnt to trust them … What I am suggesting is that when we lose sight of our role as neighbours, the health of the neighbourhood suffers. And when the health of the neighbourhood suffers, we all suffer. When we ignore our biological destiny as social creatures – people who need each other; people for whom a sense of belonging is fundamental to our wellbeing; people who utterly rely on communities to define us, sustain us and protect us – then our level of anxiety is likely to rise”1 No matter if we have lived in this area for many years, or have only just arrived and are making a new home here in Oran Park

and the surrounding suburbs and estates, I encourage all of us to allow Dr Hugh Mackay’s words to challenge us that we will strive, even though we live busy lives and we’re building our homes in busy streets, to become ‘good neighbours’ who see those we live around and work with not as strangers but friends. Oran Park Library and Community Centre Works Underway

Cat-Virus Outbreak

Oran Park Town will soon be home to a new state-of-the-art Library and Community Centre, with construction works now underway. Mayor of Camden, Cr Lara Symkowiak said she is excited the community is another step closer to enjoying a brand new library and community facility and has welcomed commencement of works. “The contemporary facility planned by Council for its community, will be delivered under a Voluntary Planning Agreement between Council, Urban Growth NSW and Greenfields Development and will reflect design excellence and be a resource for education and information sharing, which will provide a foundation of lifelong learning for our growing community. It will also be a place for community engagement and recreation.” “The library and community centre will be in the heart of the Oran Park Civic Precinct and our vision for this building is for it to be a community living room.” “The new Library and Community Centre, set within an exciting and vibrant town centre, will feature high ceilings, a sun-drenched foyer and picturesque views across the Town Park.” “There will be a focus on sustainable features to reduce our eco footprint including air conditioning linked to the Council administration building, to reduce running costs, and efficient water use.” “The external space has been designed to encourage cycling and walking and will feature an outdoor recreation area with user-friendly street furniture.” “Designed by award-winning Brewster Hjorth Architects, the 2500sqm contemporary Library and Community Centre will feature a high-tech open library floor plan, offices for community support and a community centre to foster art, culture and community activities,” Cr Symkowiak said. Mark Perich, Greenfields Development Director said: “Greenfields is proud to be working with UrbanGrowth NSW and Council to bring a vibrant heart to the Centre of Oran Park Town.” Paul Hourigan, UrbanGrowth NSW Program Director (South West) said: “As part of our ongoing commitment to building cities for future generations, UrbanGrowth NSW is proud to be working with Greenfields and Council to deliver this facility for the residents of Oran Park Town.” Construction is expected to be completed by January 2018 by ADCO Constructions. More information can be found on Council’s website www.camden.nsw.gov.au

Council has been advised that a highly contagious cat virus, known as feline panleukopenia or feline enteritis, has broken out in the Greater Sydney Metropolitan Area. Liverpool Animal Shelter currently does not have the virus, however to control and minimise exposure to the virus, the facility will not accept any new cats or kittens (impounded or surrendered) until further notice. Council is currently investigating options for Camden’s stray cats. It is suggested that residents contact their vets for advice on vaccinating their cats against the virus.

Separation Anxiety In Pets With most of us now back at work after the holidays, we may be dismayed to find that some of our pets are not coping with being at home alone. This may be separation anxiety, not to be confused with generalized anxiety. Domestication of our pets over the centuries primarily for their companionship, traits and refined uses, may mean that some of our furry companions don’t cope on their own as well as we may think. Both dogs and cats can develop separation anxiety, though the cat may not disturb the neighbour, due to its inability to bark. Signs that may be noted when an animal has separation anxiety include, but are not restricted to: • Exaggerated overexcitement when greeting the owner. • Consistently following the owner and inability to leave them (these are the animals you find parked just outside the bathroom in fear that you may have disappeared). • Inappropriate toileting. • Gastrointestinal upsets. • Stereotypical pacing, restlessness and inability to settle. • Vocalizing (separation barking can be consistent, unlike target barking). Separation anxiety can have a significant influence on your pet’s health and quality of life. Subsequently it may also impact your life, and the affiliation with your neighbours. It has been found if the animal can be distracted when you first leave home for approximately 20 minutes this can greatly reduce the anxiety, plus: • Provide environmental enrichment. • Practice ‘warm goodbyes’ and ‘cool hellos’ - their favourite treats and chew toys should only be given when you leave. On arrival avoid acknowledging the overzealous frantic animal, as you could be escalating the anxiety. • Provide chewing items - chewing releases ‘feel good’ endorphins. • Leave classical music or audio books playing for them, rather than the radio. Research has shown that they have a preference for Bach. • If able, leave the animal access where it feels comfortable in the house with an item of clothing or similar. • Avoid or desensitize the pet to ‘triggers’ that the animal associates with you leaving eg keys, work shoes etc. In some cases, you may be required to consult your veterinarian for assistance.

Super – Have You Got Enough? Have you ever considered how you will fund your retirement? Like many Australians you may contribute regularly to your superannuation fund, but have you actually determined how much you will need to survive once you stop working? Waiting until you retire to do the sums is leaving it too late. There are a few questions you can ask yourself to help decide how much you are going to need to have in your super account. 1. A general rule of thumb is that when you retire, you will need about 2/3 of your current income to be able to comfortably make ends meet. Will your current super arrangements meet this requirement, or will you need to make extra payments or consider other investment options? 2. Think about your debts – will these all be discharged by the time you retire, or will you still need to service them? Make sure

any future repayments are factored into your calculations. You might want to pay off your home once you are retired, which will mean a large one off payment. 3. What kind of lifestyle are you going to want when you retire? Where are you planning to live? Are you hoping to travel or buy a boat? Make sure your retirement income is enough to fund your ideal retirement, including any recreational pastimes you are planning to be involved in. It is a good idea to get financial advice when you are planning for your retirement. Superannuation is only one source of retirement income – there are other options that could help you enjoy your dream retirement. We are specialists in the area of retirement planning and feel free to arrange a free financial health check with our Financial Adviser.

And there it is, March! Almost a quarter of the year gone, just like that! I lose count of how many times I get told that readers can't wait for their copy of the Gazette. It is very humbling to know, that our readers find so much joy amongst these pages. Their reasons differ; some like to have details of local businesses at their fingertips; others love the localised stories; and I must admit.... MANY simply cannot wait for this month's recipe! I am told, as soon as it arrives, the recipe is swiftly removed from the paper and placed on the fridge! This month's recipe is sure to please! I won't spoil it for you, have a sneaky peek at page 11 for all the juicy details! "Don't let the silly little things steal all your happiness" For now, sit back with a cuppa in hand and enjoy (if for only a brief moment) your Community News.
