Commemorating Oran Raceway's Finish Line

Park

Work will soon commence on a commemorative wall on The Straight to mark the location of the Oran Park Raceway Finish Line. Oran Park Town has a rich history in motorsports. This dates back to 1962, when the Oran Park Raceway was established by the volunteer labour of the Singer Car Club. Oran Park Raceway hosted many significant motor racing events including several Australian Touring Car Championships, which went on to be known as the V8 Supercars, as well as the Australian Grand Prix on two occasions. The circuit, which was extended in 1973 into a distinctive Figure 8, was in the southwestern corner of the Oran Park Town development, with the finish line located in “The Straight” adjacent to Doohan Ovals. This was the site of victories by some of the greatest Australian and international raceway competitors whose names now adorn the streets and parks in Oran Park Town. To recognise this significant landmark and share it with future generations, they will soon be undertaking works to install a commemorative sandstone wall on The Straight in the location of the former finish line, together with artwork in the footpath representative of the finish line. These works will commence shortly and weather permitting are expected to be complete in 6 weeks. The footpath will remain open for the majority of this time and will only be closed off for a short period. Thank you for your patience while this work is undertaken, to celebrate the victorious competitors who raced at Oran Park Raceway. Make Shaving the World Your Mission: Possible The Leukaemia Foundation has set a mission for the whole of Australia to raise awareness of blood cancer and stand in solidarity with the 110,000 fellow Aussies currently living with the disease, by participating in this year’s World’s Greatest Shave. The mission, should you choose to accept it, is to either shave, cut, colour or wax (ouch) your hair and raise vital funds for the growing number of Australians impacted by blood cancer. Today, 50 Australians will be newly diagnosed with blood cancer such as leukaemia, lymphoma, or myeloma, and by 2035, that number is expected to double to 100 people each day. Blood cancer can develop in anyone and at any age from children to adolescents, young adults to working adults with families and older Australians. Sadly, there are no

2

March 2022 www.oranparkgazette.com.au

screening programs available for blood cancers and there is no way to prevent blood cancer through lifestyle change. Leukaemia Foundation CEO, Mr Chris Tanti said, with the incidence of blood cancer continuing to grow, we cannot afford to sit by and allow this cancer to increasingly wreak havoc on families across Australia. “There has never been a more vital time to get behind World’s Greatest Shave and raise much needed funds to support Australians impacted by blood cancer. By signing up, you are ensuring blood cancer patients have access to the right information, support and care they need to fight the disease as well as someone to turn to every step of the way,” said Mr Tanti. How you choose to participate in World’s Greatest Shave and share this with your community is entirely up to you. Many Australians will choose to lose their locks, colour their cuts or wax their waves at home, in smaller COVID-safe gatherings, or at local hairdressing salons; with some set to live stream their brave feats on social media. In 2022, World’s Greatest Shave will again ‘go green’ thanks to a partnership with Sustainable Salons. This means ponytails snipped from those taking part in the event can be turned into wigs for those who have lost their hair due to the impact of cancer treatment, with shorter hair clippings transformed into compost and floating booms to absorb oil spills at sea. Plus, for the first time ever, one inspiring shaver will also win a hero-worthy set of wheels thanks to Suzuki Australia who are giving away a blue Jimny worth $35,000. Officially ramping up to ‘Shave Week’ between March 1620, World’s Greatest Shave hopes to raise $18 million, the single biggest source of funds that enable the work of the Leukaemia Foundation.

Build Our School

With the 2022 school year underway, the Federal Member for Macarthur is renewing his push to establish a new public school in the suburb of Gregory Hills. Residents have waited long enough, yet shockingly the long awaited new primary school remains stuck in the “planning stage”. “Local residents have been sold a lie by the LiberalNational Government,” said Dr Mike Freelander MP. “Other local schools are at capacity, and the Government has consistently failed to plan for our growing community’s needs. “The Government must urgently fast-track this project, to ensure that our kids are not left behind. It is simply unacceptable for residents to continue to be left in limbo.” According to the NSW Department of Education, the new Gledswood Hills Public School is already requiring an upgrade to service the region’s rapidly growing population, and the absence of a school in Gregory Hills. The school opened a mere year ago. “Our local schools are bearing the burden of the Government’s lack of vision,” said Dr Freelander. “The fact that Gregory Hills Public School remains stuck in the planning stage is unacceptable and shows that the Government is not treating this project as a priority. “Our community deserves better.” Dr Freelander’s longstanding campaign to secure a complete upgrade of Passfield Park School in Minto proved successful, with the new school opening its doors to students for the first time this year. “I hope we can achieve a similar result for the residents of Gregory Hills, Gledswood Hills, and Oran Park,” said Dr Freelander.

Kirkham BMX Facility Carpark To Be Built Shortly

Camden’s premier BMX facility continues to come to fruition with Council accepting a tender for the construction of a new car park at last month's ordinary meeting. Kirkham Park BMX Facility, which is receiving a $5.56 million upgrade, will

4

see stage 2B works begin in May this year, including: • Construction of a 200-space carpark; • Realignment of access road; and, • Construction of pedestrian bridge and landscaping. Mayor of Camden, Cr Therese Fedeli, said the facility would be able to host international competitions once complete. “Council is dedicated to providing residents with first-class sporting facilities and Kirkham Park BMX facility will certainly fit the bill,” Cr Fedeli said. “It is exciting to think future Olympians may be training and competing at the venue when it is completed. “Creating a car park and relevant works will make it easier for visitors to comfortably attend and enjoy the venue and I look forward to the works beginning in the coming months.” Kirkham Park BMX Facility Stage 2A is currently under construction and includes an 8m BMX start hill, elite straight, storage area, marshalling area and an international standard pump track, which will be open for use to the general public once complete. The project is co-funded by Council and the NSW Government’s 2019/20 Greater Sydney Sports Facility Fund. Thousands Of Trees To Be Planted Throughout Camden Thousands of trees are set to make the Camden area greener and leafier with Council accepting a tender for the planting of trees as part of the Greening Our City Every Tree Counts program. The tender will see the planting of almost 1,500 street and park trees over the next 12 months as part of the delivery of two NSW Government Greening our City grant funded projects. It will also cover Council’s ongoing tree planting program for the next three years, with an option to extend for a further two by one-year extensions. Mayor of Camden, Cr Therese Fedeli said the trees were a welcome addition to an already leafy Camden area. “Camden is lucky enough to be set in a beautiful environment and it is fantastic to be adding to our beautiful tree canopy,” Cr Fedeli said. “Not only will more trees look beautiful, but they will also provide great oxygen and shade covering for our community. “I look forward to seeing the trees planted and growing over the years to come.” The location and species of trees to be

planted will be assessed for each individual site based on site constraints and to complement the existing streetscape and other plantings.

Hire A Portable Drinking Fountain Or Water Bottle Refill Unit For Your Next Community Event Council is offering local community groups the opportunity to hire a portable drinking fountain and/or a portable water bottle refill unit for their next community event. Part funded through AGL’s Local Community Investment Program, these units are free to hire. Not only do they provide easy access to fresh drinking water for event patrons, but they also provide a fantastic environmental benefit to the community by helping minimise single use plastic drink bottles, therefore helping to protect our local wildlife and environment. Mayor of Camden, Cr Therese Fedeli said Council is committed to working towards a sustainable future for our community. “Less than 20 per cent of plastic gets recycled in Australia, that’s why as an organisation we’re proud to have these units available for hire and to help reduce single use plastic drink bottles within our community,” Cr Fedeli said. “These units are perfect for community groups and events such as school fetes, sporting days as well as Council and general community events. They provide a zero-cost, healthy hydration option to the community. “Council has a network of drinking fountains and water bottle refill stations throughout the local government area located in parks, playgrounds and along walking and bike tracks. I encourage everyone to take a bottle from home and refill it at these locations when you run out.” The units are durable, lightweight, easy to transport and easy to set up – all you need is a tap connected to fresh water. The units can be used individually or can be connected. Council is committed to achieving our sustainability goals through the NSW Sustainable Advantage Program and creating a sustainable urban environment for our community to enjoy. r Article: Camden Council

Development consent for Stage 3A of the Oran Park Podium was achieved just prior to Christmas, and they are pleased to announce that early earthworks have now commenced on Podium Stage 3A with foundation works to commence soon after. As previously advised, construction of Stage 2 was put on hold in 2021 due to leasing issues encountered as a result of Covid. This saw them bring forward delivery of Stages 3A and 3B in order to deliver a more robust and better shopping centre for our community. Stage 3A is located directly to the north of the existing shopping centre and will include some exciting new retail spaces including a Coles supermarket, a large childcare centre and significant upgrades to Podium Way allowing for a more pleasant outdoor dining experience. Stage 3A is over 1 ½ times bigger than the existing retail space in Stage 1 and once construction is complete, the retail space will be 2 ½ times the current size. Stage 3A will include a small food court, which will open out to a new park off Oran Park Drive. The underground car park will be expanded with additional entrances added off Dick Johnson Drive and Oran Park Drive. The car park will include smart car parking facilities which will also be retrofitted to the existing car park. Stage 3A will link to the existing shopping centre via a covered walkway which will create a north-south retail promenade. A DA for Stage 3B was lodged in September 2021 and is still under assessment. Stage 3B includes more retail spaces on the ground floor and a 184 room Atura Hotel, also featuring generous conference and meeting facilities. Entry to the hotel will be from Level 1 which will also provide access to the restaurant, bar, and outdoor pool. They expect to commence construction of 3B mid this year. Stage 3A is expected to be completed by the end of 2023. Once Stage 3A is complete, they intend to start construction on Stage 2 as they already have most of the approvals in place. How To Help Your Child Solve Problems Growing up is about learning foundational skills for life and few skills are more important than problem solving. It may be tempting to “jump in” and solve problems for children, but whenever possible it’s fantastic to involve children in solving their own problems. It takes five steps to solve a problem: 1. Identify the problem 2. Think of possible solutions 3. Consider the costs and benefits of potential solutions 4. Implement your plan 5. Evaluate to see if the problem has been resolved When children are little, you can help by giving them the words to identify the problem, e.g. “You want to finish the puzzle, but there’s a piece missing”. Instead of directing children to try your solution, prompt children to think of their own possible solutions with a question like, “what could we do about this?” Younger children may need help to think of possible solutions. You can begin by offering two ideas. “Perhaps we could look for the piece or try a different puzzle?” This is an effective ageappropriate way to give younger children choice in how they respond a problem. When children are older, we can support more open-ended brain storming. Children may want to immediately try the first solution that comes to mind. We can prompt children to think ahead and consider consequences with a simple question like, “I wonder what would happen if we tried that?” Maintain curiosity and resist judgment. Remember that the point of such a question is to support children to stop and think before acting. If a child’s solution doesn’t work out, we can support resilience. It is natural to feel frustrated or disappointed when we don’t succeed at something, but problem solving is all about trying again. It may be helpful to offer to work together to figure out what went wrong. When children succeed in solving their own problems, they feel more confident and in control of their lives. These positive experiences support greater wellbeing and relationships across the lifespan.

Locals are getting ready for the Western Sydney Memory Walk & Jog, returning in 2022, which will be held on Sunday 20 March at a new location, the beautiful Lizard Log, Western Sydney Parklands, Abbotsbury. Dementia Australia CEO Maree McCabe AM said Dementia Australia was excited to see the Memory Walk & Jog event return to Western Sydney in 2022. “The Memory Walk & Jog series is Dementia Australia’s biggest fundraising initiative, and helps us provide invaluable support, education and resources for people living with dementia in Australia, their carers, families and friends,” Ms McCabe said. “It has been my pleasure to take part in many Memory Walk & Jog events across Australia over the years, and I attest to how enjoyable and rewarding they are. They really do offer fun for all the family! “These events are so important, not just from a fundraising perspective, but also because they are opportunities for people impacted by dementia to gather, to get active and to share stories with people in similar circumstances. “Together, we can make the world look brighter for people with dementia. Let’s show them they are not alone!” In 2022, there are an estimated 161,600 people living with dementia in New South Wales. Without a medical breakthrough, the number of people living with dementia is expected to increase to an estimated 345,000 people by 2058. Events like Memory Walk & Jog play an important role not only in funding support, but also in raising awareness of dementia. There are 19 Memory Walk & Jog events planned across Australia in 2022, which represents the series’ largest event program to date. Each event offers fun for people of all ages and abilities. The course is family-friendly, and suitable for all levels of fitness. Each event is designed for people of all ages and abilities to select whether they take part in a walk, jog or run of 2km, 6.5km or a timed 6.5km. Participate as an individual, get a team together, or even come in fancy dress. The safety and wellbeing of Memory Walk & Jog participants, volunteers and staff is Dementia Australia’s top priority at these events. The team is constantly monitoring the evolving situation with COVID-19, and remains in communication with the relevant federal, state, and local authorities. A robust COVID-safe plan has been tailored for each event and will be adapted as needed. Oran Park Probus Club

Probus Clubs throughout Australia and New Zealand are social clubs that aim to promote fun, fellowship, and friendship among retired and semi-retired people within the community. At Oran Park Probus Club, our activities have been impacted by the pandemic, the lockdowns, and the rise in the Omicron variant. Older people are more at risk of severe illness and some of our members have consciously and, of necessity, reduced their contact with other people. Isolation and fear can affect our mental health, so it is important to re-connect again whilst taking all necessary precautions to remain Covid-safe, as we resume our activities. Our first monthly meeting of the year was held at the beginning of February, with some members choosing to lunch together after the meeting. Our craft sessions will resume as normal from March as will Coffee and Chat and pub lunches. Other activities will follow as soon as it is safe for our members and permitted by venues and Covid regulations. The monthly meetings of Oran Park Probus Club are held on the first Tuesday of every month, except November. This date was changed to avoid any conflict with members’ arrangements for the Melbourne Cup. There is no meeting in January. At the March General Meeting, our speaker will provide some entertainment prior to the serious business of the Annual General Meeting. This is when members will elect a new Management Committee for the 2022-2023 year. If you are interested in joining a social club in your retirement or would like to know more about Oran Park Probus Club, please come to a meeting as a visitor. The monthly meetings are held at Wests Lakeside Golf Club, Camden. For further information, please contact the Secretary, on Ph: 0410 758755 or email: secretary.oranparkprobusclub@gmail.com.

FAITH – NEWLIFE ANGLICAN ORAN PARK

What’s Better than Battling? Is anyone coasting into 2022? Sure, some of us might be like the duck in the story that appears to be travelling effortlessly on the surface, whilst below the water the legs are kicking like mad. It’s the below the water stuff that I’m talking about. Our inner lives. How are you doing there? As the pandemic unfolds and mutates, there’s a growing sense that we can find ourselves battling. My very unscientific definition of battling is just slogging through each day increasingly alone, independent, and with a growing sense of weariness about.. everything. There has to be a better way. Jesus invites us to find a life that could rightly be called thriving. One of His followers, Paul, writes this in the Bible, “Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” That’s a lot - let’s unpack it. The encouragement here isn’t to rejoice or give thanks ‘for’ all circumstances, but rather ‘in’ all circumstances. And then he adds that we should pray continually. That might at first sound like a chore, but there’s freedom and resources found here that are the exact opposite of battling. Christians pray to remind ourselves that God is still in charge, to find His strength, and to thank Him for His daily mercies. Battling is often linked to worry and loneliness - a growing and invisible epidemic right alongside the one we wear masks for. Praying is an antidote because it reminds us that we are never alone. There is a God right here, just the breath of a prayer away, who cares for us and is able to help. To thrive this month, I want to encourage you to stop the lonely battling and begin a life lived in conversation with the God who can, and is ready to, help us all.

FAITH – ST MARY MACKILLOP CATHOLIC PARISH ORAN PARK

Article Written + Submitted by: Fr David Catterall MTh - Parish Priest @ St Mary MacKillop Catholic Parish Oran Park P: 02 4648 2226 W: www.marymackillopparish.org.au A: 94 Oran Park Drive, Oran Park NSW 2570 Facebook: www.facebook.com/oranparkparish Twitter: www.twitter.com/oranparkparish While the shelves of our local supermarkets are already filled with Easter eggs and Hot Cross Buns – symbols we associate with Easter – for many Christians, the lead up to Easter (known as Lent) is super important. It is a time that calls us to be people of prayer, fasting and works of charity. As a reflection from Caritas Australia, that coordinate PROJECT COMPASSION (an annual campaign to raise funds that Caritas can use to support communities living in poverty) says: “Last year, during the lockdown when many people were working from home, there were jokes about the ‘four horsemen of procrastination.’ These were snacks, napping, social media, and minor chores. Supposedly, they were time fillers that stopped us doing what we needed to do. Lent begins with a great sense of now. It is a season of opportunity; it even has a flavour of urgency … During Lent, Project Compassion will present us with inspiring stories from Caritas Australia about real people entering into partnership with us in real ways. The theme for Project Compassion this year comes from one of the great now moments in the whole of scripture. After the flood has receded in the Book of Genesis, God puts a rainbow in the sky as a sign that the earth will never again suffer in such a way. God makes a covenant with the human family and the whole of creation For All Future Generations. It is an expression of hope, something we might relate to after the unsettling experiences of the last two years. For some people, this will be the first Easter we can come together since 2019 … The hope we share starts now”. May Lent 2022 be an opportunity for all of us, no matter our faith background, to reach into the lives of others so that they might know the joy of true partnership. Last year was Brook’s debut season in the National Trans-Am Series. A maiden win at Sydney Motorsport Park and pole position there and at Bathurst in the last two rounds of the series enabled the talented motorsport racer to finish the year in third, trailing second place by just one point. “Finishing on the podium in my first year of the National Trans-Am Series was a bonus. For me, there was a lot of learning over the six rounds” explained Tim to the Oran Park Gazette. “It allowed us to build momentum for this year. We will fight for the championship. We’ve capitalised on the mechanical aspects of the car. Hopefully, there will be no dramas as I want to be at the front” he continued. With the pandemic affecting motorsport last year, it gave Tim and his team an opportunity to take time off and work on the car. It also allowed him to think more about what he could do to improve behind the wheel. Covid delays meant that the 2021 season wrapped up later than usual, finishing in November/December. The 2022 series began in February, with less down time than normal. A new partnership between Stan Sport and the Australian Racing Group (ARG) is an exciting development this year for motorsport, including the National Trans-Am Series, which is Brook’s racing category. “I’d like to thank our sponsors Tradie Pad, Cosmo Cranes/Crane Decks, Paynter Dixon and Wall Racing for their support for this coming race year. A big thank you must also go to my support crew, family and friends” he announced. “We’ve had our test day. Everything is good. We can’t hide now” Tim ended. r [L]Tim Brook at the Stan Sport media launch | Image: Jack Martin Photography [R] Tim racing at Symmons Plains in Tasmania | Image: InSyde Media
