Young People at the Centre of Powerful New Vaping Campaign

Young people are being reminded ‘every vape is a hit to your health’, as part of a new campaign launched by the NSW Government recently.

Developed in consultation with young people and medical experts, the campaign amplifies the voices of people aged 14 - 24 who have experienced the harms of vaping.

The campaign also uses powerful advertisements to encourage young people to consider the proven health harms of vaping, such as nicotine addiction, lung damage, breathlessness, nicotine poisoning and burns from exploding vapes.

It comes as the latest NSW Population Health Survey shows current vaping among people aged 16-24 has significantly increased to 16.5 per cent in 2021-22, up from 4.5 per cent two years prior.

The ‘Every vape is a hit to your health’ campaign builds on NSW Health’s successful ‘Do you know what you’re vaping?’ campaign and Vaping Toolkit and provides a range of support pathways for young people.

For support and advice about quitting vaping young people are encouraged to contact their general practitioner, download a quit vaping app, or call Quitline on 13 78 48.

The NSW Government is committed to addressing the growing issue of vaping through ongoing collaboration with our Commonwealth and State counterparts, including contributing to the National Vaping Working Group established by the Federal Government in November 2023.

In 2023-24, the NSW Ministry of Health will invest $25 million on tobacco and e-cigarette control in NSW. This includes an investment by Cancer Institute NSW of more than $3 million in the new vaping campaign.

An additional $2.5 million is also being invested over the next 12 months to increase services to help young people quit vaping, including a new digital platform, enhancements to the iCanQuit platform and an online learning module for youth services across the state.

This comes after the NSW Government convened a roundtable last year to address the growing issue of vaping in schools.

Since then, the NSW Department of Education is continuing to update the curriculum resources, so they better address the dangers of vaping.

An online training module for school staff is also being created to have conversations with students, and webinar resources will soon be available for parents and carers.

Did you know that there was a flower farm in our community?

BOHO Gardens and Blooms Boutique Flower Farm, established in April 2023, began with a dream to transform a small plot into a vibrant floral paradise. “Despite our small size, less than half an acre, we serve our community with joy. We love helping people find happiness in flowers and supply fresh blooms throughout Spring, Summer, and Autumn” explained Iryna Kharkovska, Owner of BOHO Gardens and Blooms Boutique Flower Farm.

Their farm offers seasonal gift bouquets, monthly flower subscriptions, DIY flower buckets, and now, small weddings and event florals. Their diverse range of flowers includes unique garden roses, rare dahlias, irises, delphiniums, ranunculus and more, all grown with care and dedication.

“We have about 40 to 50 varieties of flowers at the farm. The most popular would be roses. They are beautiful, fragrant, and delicate. Dahlias too are popular as they are unusual and rare” she said to the Oran Park Gazette.

With Valentine’s Day now over, it was certainly a busy time for the flower farm, who supply to the local community as well as florists.

“My plans this year are to do more weddings and events. I really enjoy this space” Iryna smiled.

She has a background in landscape design, primarily designing gardens with flowers. Iryna also has another business, BOHO Gardens, Landscape Design and Horticulture.

Join them in celebrating nature's beauty at BOHO Gardens and Blooms. Whether you're picking up a bouquet or exploring their subscription services, they're excited to share the joy of flowers with you. Follow them on Instagram @boho. gardensandblooms to join their journey!

For All Future Generations.

While the shelves of our local supermarkets are already filled with Easter eggs and Hot Cross Buns – symbols we associate with Easter, for many Christians the lead up to Easter, or Lent, is super important. It is a time that calls us to be people of prayer, fasting and works of charity.

As a reflection from Caritas Australia, who coordinate ‘Project Compassion’, an annual campaign to raise funds that Caritas can then use to support communities living in poverty, says “Despite everything we have endured in recent times, [we] have faith that together, as one human family, we can continue to work to make the world a more just and better place for all. Each year, Project Compassion comes as a timely reminder of the importance of solidarity and how a single act of kindness – whether big or small, can make a life-changing impact in the lives of those who need it most.”

The theme of Project Compassion 2024 is ‘For All Future Generations’.

Inspired by the Bible’s story of the burning bush (Exodus 3:1-20), this theme reminds us that the good that we do today will create a lasting impact for generations to come.

May Lent 2024 be an opportunity for all of us, no matter our faith background, to reach into the lives of others so that they might know the joy of true partnership and solidarity.

A Community Within the Community

We are becoming more and more socially unfit. At least that was the conclusion from an article in The Atlantic I read recently. Does that check out here in Australia? Anecdotally it would seem to. We look around to see at least three causes at work for our increasing loneliness - more screen time, more ‘busy-ness’, and fewer opportunities for us to just hang out.

The screen time explanation is literally staring us in the face. According to a study that tracked global smartphone usage, Australians are looking at their little black rectangle for 2 hours and 49 minutes a day. Different demographics differ in usage, especially among our teens where the Institute of Family Studies notes that the excessive usage by children causes weight gain, emotional problems, and psychosocial health decline.

When it comes to being constantly busy, the reading I’ve done shows mixed conclusions. On the one hand, post COVID, we find the return to regular activity can seem overwhelming. Statistically it appears to be no more than we were doing before. This feeling, however, causes us to pull back or face exhaustion. And pull back we have - at great cost.

According to Groundswell Foundation, one quarter of Australians feel frequent loneliness with the largest explanation being a diminished number of spaces and places to simply be with other human beings. Remote work practices have further compounded this. According to a recent KPMG report, “there is robust evidence to suggest that loneliness is detrimental to physical and mental health and can have profound socio-economic impacts.”

What does all this have to do with a faith column in the Gazette? Firstly, of course I live in Oran Park too, and secondly, I’m part of a growing organisation that meets weekly.

Church offers many benefits in the spiritual realm, and at the very least it’s a network of friendships that exists for the benefit of not-yet-members.

We’d love you to find a little community within our community each week at 9:30am or 6pm on a Sunday. Come and say hi at the NewLife Anglican Church here at Oran Park - it may just lift your social fitness - your heart as well!

Chemicals Discarded Responsibly

Hundreds of residents dropped off more than 24 tonnes of chemical waste at Camden Council’s annual Chemical CleanOut last month, preventing the waste from entering landfill.

The annual event gives residents the chance to dispose of their unwanted hazardous chemicals around their homes or garages including household cleaners, pesticides and herbicides, poisons, pool chemicals and much more.

Mayor of Camden, Cr Ashleigh Cagney, said it was fantastic to see so many people take advantage of the free event.

“I’m proud that Camden Council is committed to helping our residents dispose of their waste correctly,” she said.

“It’s important as a community that we continue doing the right thing to help keep our environment in pristine condition.

“As always, I have received some great feedback from the community about the Chemical CleanOut and how great it was.”

Council’s Community Recycling Centre (CRC) at 5 Millwood Avenue, Narellan provides residents with a free and convenient way to drop off their household problem waste for recycling.

Labor’s Better Tax Cuts to Benefit Macarthur

The Albanese Government is delivering tax cuts for Macarthur taxpayers starting on July 1. Labor’s new tax cuts are designed to provide cost-of-living relief whilst making our tax system fairer.

90,000 Macarthur taxpayers will receive a tax break from July 1 under Labor’s better tax cuts announced by the Prime Minister and Treasurer.

The average tax cut will be $1,466.

Around 80,000 Macarthur residents, or 89 per cent of local taxpayers, will receive a bigger tax cut than they would have under the plan Scott Morrison legislated five years ago.

The average Australian wage earner on $73,000 per annum will receive a tax cut of $1504 which is more than $800 extra in their pocket each year than they would have received under Scott Morrison’s proposal.

To find out how much you will benefit from Labor’s tax cuts, use the calculator on the Treasury website: www.treasury.gov. au/tax-cuts/calculator.

Further, low-income earners will receive additional tax relief under changes to the Medicare levy, with the Albanese Government proposing to increase the thresholds by 7.1 per cent to be in line with inflation.

As such, a single individual who earns $30,000 would be $172.40 better off per year, with single pensioners receiving a bigger boost as they will be $272.40 better off.

“We’re giving a tax cut to every taxpayer in 2024. This is about more help with the cost-of-living and more help for middle Australia.

“This is the right and responsible thing to do - to deliver more relief for more workers without adding to inflationary pressures or burdening the budget” said Treasurer Jim Chalmers.

“Every taxpayer in Macarthur will now get a tax cut.

We’re delivering more help for working families and more help for Australians already under the pump from the cost of living, putting cash back into people’s pockets when they need it most.

Our tax cuts are about ensuring more workers in Macarthur can keep more of what they earn because we know that will take pressure off people doing it tough” said Dr Mike Freelander MP, Member for Macarthur.

Leisa McGivern OAM Named 2024

Badgerys Creek Local Woman of the Year

Leisa McGivern OAM, resident of Glenmore Park, has been announced as the 2024 Badgerys Creek Local Woman of the Year.

She was awarded the honour by Tanya Davies MP, Member for Badgerys Creek, in recognition of her extraordinary service to children as a foster carer over the last 24 years, in which she has fostered more than 60 children.

Mrs Davies stated, “I’m so proud that our electorate has a woman of Leisa’s character and values, providing babies and children a safe and loving home and a start to life that they otherwise would not have.”

Leisa shared that she believes that every child needs ‘love to grow’. She stated, “my role is to make sure that these children have a safe, loving home, whilst awaiting their ‘forever family’.”

Leisa is also a mother to her own 5 children.

True to her nature, Leisa encourages anyone curious about caring to look into it. “There are plenty of children in need of a place to stay,” she stated.

One of the organisations Leisa recommended to those looking to assist, and to those requiring assistance, is Anglicare Telopea, which can be contacted on 02 9890 6800.

Mrs Davies was delighted to hear that Leisa is still in contact with many of those who she had previously cared for. “The great continued love and affection from those children who have moved onto their ‘forever home’ just goes to show the extraordinary love Leisa has given to the children who have been in her care,” Mrs Davies said.

“Leisa has given a safe, loving, and nurturing home-life to many vulnerable babies and children over many years. On behalf of the community of Badgerys Creek, I sincerely thank Leisa and her family for loving and supporting these children. I congratulate her on this well-deserved award,” concluded Mrs Davies.

Oran Park Probus Club Turns 10

Oran Park Probus Club have reached an important milestone, celebrating their 10th Anniversary.

Oran Park Probus Club Inc. (OPPC) was formed in February 2014, having its first AGM to elect a Committee in early March 2014 at the Marketing Centre Offices in Oran Park Town Centre.

Probus South Pacific Ltd (PSPL) is the company which controls the formation of all Probus clubs in Australia and New Zealand and they were supported by Narellan Rotary Club. “The Probus mantra is Fun and Friendship in Retirement, though many of us add 'Food’ too! It is open to all those wishing to enjoy themselves in retirement”, said Tony Law, Oran Park Probus Club’s Tours Officer.

The club currently has 64 members and is looking to grow this to about 100. “We have a special free party for all members, to be held at The Sandown Room #1, at Oran Park Library on 29 February. PSPL will be represented by Monika Prasad (Community Engagement Manager) and will present us with a Commemorative Certificate. All current Founder Members (20) will be presented with certificates by Camden Mayor, Cr Ashleigh Cagney. Finger food, birthday cake and cool drinks will be available” he explained.

When asked what his favourite memories at Oran Park Probus Club in the past decade were, Tony replied, “Many memories of day trips to of our local area, in particular Cabramatta, Goulburn, Berrima, Jervis Bay, Garden Island, State Parliament, Nan Tien temple, Menangle Trots, and the Blue Mountains. Other tours have gone to Mauritius and Sri Lanka, Taiwan, and Norfolk Island. We have monthly meetings with invited speakers. Most memorable for me were Deb Wallace (former Commander of Taskforce Raptor), Howard Brown (high profile ‘victims advocate’) and top of the list was Nick Gleeson, with his story of blindness, friendships, and adventures”.

It is essential for all retirees to have outlets for their social skills and to maintain their mental health. Many have family commitments; however, it is also necessary to develop friendships outside of the family group and broaden their horizons.

“With the ageing population and trauma of three years of Covid, it is essential for all Probus Clubs to ensure their memberships continue to flourish. OPPC is very social with meetings, coach and train trips, pub lunches, dinners, coffee and chat sessions, theatre/movies craft and walking groups etc. We welcome new members and new ideas” he ended.

OPPC meeting dates are the first Tuesday of each month, from February to December at Wests Function Centre, Lakeside Golf Club, 50 Raby Road, Gledswood Hills. More information can be found at www.probussouthpacific.org/microsites/oranpark.

A Celebration of Women’s Contributions

Athletics two-time World Champion and four-time Commonwealth Champion, Jana Pittman, will be the keynote speaker at Camden Council’s International Women’s Day Gala.

The annual event will return in 2024 for another year to #inspireinclusion while raising funds for Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard.

Pittman, the first woman to represent Australia in both a Summer and Winter Olympic Games, will take attendees on a journey through the peaks and troughs that helped shape her career and build her into who she is today.

The event, taking place at Gledswood Homestead and Winery on Thursday 7 March from 5:30pm to 9:00pm, will feature:

• A two-course meal and drinks;

• A speech by keynote speaker, Jana Pittman;

• A Mayoral address;

• Presentation of the Camden Woman of the Year Award; and

• Networking opportunities throughout the night.

Mayor of Camden, Cr Ashleigh Cagney, said she was looking forward to seeing everyone come together to celebrate International Women’s Day.

“Women play such important and powerful roles in life, both at home and professionally. It’s terrific to be able to have this annual event here in the Camden area to honour and celebrate these women in our community,” she said.

“I’m incredibly proud to be able to work with five female Councillors. In addition to these powerful women, three of our Council’s director’s positions are held by inspiring and strong women as well. I’m privileged that, together, we get to help create a world where difference is valued and celebrated and forge women's equality.

“It will be a fantastic night with ticket proceeds going to Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard, so I encourage everyone to get their ticket before they sell out.”

Tickets are $110 per person or $1,000 for a table of 10. Ticket includes a two-course meal, drinks package and gift. For more information, and to book your tickets, visit www.camden. nsw.gov.au/whats-on/annual-signature-events/internationalwomens-day-gala.

International Women’s Day: 131 Years to Go

When I decided to draft an article about International Women’s Day, I checked a few statistics and found it easy to become despondent very quickly with Australia’s progress to parity. It’s slow.

International Women’s Day (IWD) will be celebrated this year on Friday 8 March, with the theme “Inspire Inclusion”. IWD is a day of collective global activism and celebration committed to forging women’s equality. It is a day for women across the world to lobby for gender equality, reproductive rights, an end to violence and abuse against them, equal participation and leadership opportunities, and the myriad of other issues women find themselves below parity with men.

IWD was borne of women’s oppression and inequality, spurring them to campaign for change. In New York City, 1908, thirteen thousand women marched to demand shorter hours, better pay and voting rights. Women across the world joined in, and finally International Women’s Day was marked for the first time by the United Nations in 1975, 67 years later.

It is fact that women are paid less than their male counterparts, they are not present in equal numbers in business or politics. Globally, it is estimated it will take 131 years to reach full parity between men and women, and no country has achieved it so far. It is not only about money. Women fall behind in opportunities for education, leadership, rights, healthcare, and violence against them. They face gender discrimination at every turn.

While IWD calls for positive change in advancing women and accelerating gender parity, it is also a day to celebrate our achievements so far. There is great strength in women celebrating women, and this year’s IWD theme, Inspire Inclusion, recognises that when women themselves are inspired to be included, there is a sense of belonging, relevance, and empowerment.

A short but measurable note to end with, is Equal Pay Day. It has not yet been announced for 2024, so we look at the Government Website Workplace Gender Equality Agency (WGEA) date for last year: August 25.

Equal Pay Day is the last day women work after the end of the financial year, to have earned the same amount as men did in the past financial year (on average). In 2023, this was August 25. Women in Australia had to work an extra 56 days to make the same pay as men. This is the gender pay gap. Women in Australia won the right to equal pay back in 1969.

Residents of Gregory Hills can now access more timely healthcare and avoid unnecessary trips to the Emergency Department (ED), thanks to a new Urgent Care Service opening last month.

Gregory Hills Urgent Care Service is equipped and staffed to treat a range of illnesses and injuries that are not life-threatening.

Care will be provided by general practitioners (GPs) and nurses and will be free for Medicare card holders and community-based asylum seekers at the My Family Health Gregory Hills, which will be open seven days a week from 8:00am to 8:00pm.

To access the service, patients should call Healthdirect on 1800 022 222. A registered nurse will assess the patient's condition and guide them to the care they need. This could include booking an appointment at the service on the patient's behalf, referring them to another service such as virtualKIDS, or, where required, escalating their care to NSW Ambulance, or advising the patient to attend an Emergency Department.

Patients needing language support can call TIS National on 131 450 and ask for Healthdirect.

NSW Health has partnered with Primary Health Networks to deliver additional Urgent Care Services right across the state, in an effort to ease pressure on busy hospital EDs and ensure the people of NSW receive the most appropriate care.

The NSW Government has committed $124 million over two years to deliver 25 Urgent Care Services in NSW by mid-2025. It is also supported by funding from the Commonwealth Government.

“Having access to Urgent Care Services like these within our communities means patients can avoid unnecessary trips to busy emergency departments and receive care for their urgent health issues in a community setting.

“These services will be staffed by general practitioners and nurses and will help residents and receive the treatment they need quickly, without waiting at in an emergency department” said Minister for Health Ryan Park MP.

“Offering the residents of south western Sydney high-quality, bulk billed Urgent Care Services will be of great benefit to our whole community.

“At this new service, people will be able to receive timely treatment for a range of illnesses and injuries that are urgent, but not life threatening, such as minor wounds that may need stitches, suspected broken bones and skin infections.

“Urgent Care Services like this one will offer a better experience for patients while easing pressure on our busy EDs. They are a true win-win” said Member for Camden Sally Quinnell MP.

“I’m really pleased the new Urgent Care Service at Gregory Hills will make it easier for people to access healthcare for urgent – but not life-threatening – illnesses and injuries more quickly and easily.

“The Commonwealth and NSW Governments are both strongly committed to supporting people with urgent care needs in settings outside of our emergency departments, and these Urgent Care Clinic’s will take pressure of emergency departments” said Federal Member for Macarthur Dr Mike Freelander MP.

Easter Weekend: A Time of Celebration

Turning a few pages into my diary, when I see ‘GOOD FRIDAY,’ and ‘EASTER SUNDAY’, it instantly conjures up a memory of my childhood home, and a small cup with a hollow chocolate egg in it, brought to me and my brother by the Easter Bunny.

As the years went by, the Easter Weekend became our family camping time, the weather usually beautiful, the fishing good. We met the same families every year, looked forward to fish and chips wrapped in newspaper, and we all played together outside as night fell, watching the sky and embers of the campfire.

But for Christians around the world, Easter is one of the most important celebrations in the holy calendar. Christians come together on this weekend to celebrate the Resurrection of Christ on Easter Sunday. Churches hold special services, and there are celebratory foods of significance: eggs, to symbolise rebirth, and hot cross buns with the cross representing the cross on which Christ died.

Easter Sunday itself is the first Sunday after the full moon that occurs on or next after March 21. It changes every year, and the date is set by religious leaders in accordance with the lunar calendar. Eastern Orthodox Christians celebrate a different date from Western Christians, because of differing lunar calculations.

May of the other world’s most popular religions also base their important holy celebrations on the lunar calendar –Buddha’s birthday depends on lunar calculations, Ramadan and the pilgrimage to Mecca doesn’t start until the new moon is visible – if it is overcast, they wait.

Although each religion teaches its own beliefs, in the everevolving movement of people, religions and cultures across our world, we still choose to look to our planet to influence the time and tides of our religious celebrations.

For many of us who were not raised in accordance with a religious calendar, we still took those annual days and made them our celebration of family, and community. For my family, they were also a time to reconnect with nature, a time to take a breather from the rat race, a moment to slow down and take stock.

We all celebrate in our own way. Rather than answering emails and messages, we hope all our readers can find some time to relax and enjoy family, community, nature, God, or whatever it is that brings you peace and joy.

The mighty Oran Park Rovers FC are primed and ready for the 2024 soccer season to kick off early next month.

While the seasons starts on 4th of April 2024, work begins way before that and continues long after the medals and trophies are adorning the winners’ mantels.

“We have more players than a team trying to score in injury time with a whopping 1200 players registered this season! As you can imagine, we haven’t finalised teams yet as registrations have only just closed. Our registrars are still in the process of doing this” said Christina and Karla, Oran Park Rovers FC Committee members.

The club emerged victorious as the junior club of the year in their association last season. This is a remarkable achievement and testament to the unwavering commitment of every player, coach, parent, and supporter.

The Rovers commemorated its tenth anniversary last year too, and the club is a far cry from its humble beginnings. They have grown stronger together from their passion for the game of football.

“As we embark on another thrilling journey on the field, it’s not just about the games and the competition. We are eagerly looking forward to the friendships that will be forged, the bonds that will be strengthened, and the camaraderie that will permeate every aspect of our club” Christina and Karla replied.

Oran Park Rovers FC is thrilled to continue its partnership with its valuable sponsors and the wider community. “Sponsor support has been instrumental in our success, and we are truly grateful for the opportunities they provide. Together, we are not just a team, but a collective force that goes beyond the boundaries of the pitch” they stated.

“With utmost gratitude for our existing major sponsor STMSydney Trucks and Machinery and all those 2023 sponsors, we kindly extend an invitation to potential sponsors to join our community at Oran Park Rovers FC. As we eagerly anticipate the season ahead, we recognise the immense value that new sponsors can bring to our club. By partnering with us, you will not only have the opportunity to showcase your brand to a passionate and engaged audience but also contribute to the growth and development of young athletes in our local community” continued Christina and Karla.

Back to School: Creating a Study Routine That Works

As children start a new school year it can be challenging after such a long holiday, for both carers and children, to get back into the school routine. We have some suggestions here for you about the hard part – setting up a good study routine.

Sleep

All children need good quality sleep to function and get through the school day. Increasingly children are on devices just before bedtime. Many, especially teens, have devices overnight in their rooms.

Children aged 6-12 years need 9-12 hours of sleep every night, and for teens, 8-10 hours is recommended.

It is important to note the stimulation caused by blue light can interfere with sleep patterns, as it can interfere with melatonin, the hormone that regulates sleep. Children should therefore not use devices just before bed. Instead, encourage children to read, do puzzles or meditate before bed.

Physical Activities

Physical activity should be incorporated into your child’s everyday routine. Research has shown that physical activity helps with memory, concentration, and processing of information, all of which help with study.

Furthermore, regular exercise reduces stress levels by releasing endorphins, thus promoting better mood. Another benefit to exercise is the increase in energy levels which can help with study.

Space, Time, And Organisation

A regular study time helps children to incorporate study into their routine. Often after school, after a break, or after exercise, will work best.

Can you dedicate a quiet, well-lit and distraction free place for study? New stationery, a plant or a new planner can help children start the year fresh. Make the homework area as calm and inviting as possible. If you don’t have the space, check out your local library or homework club. Most schools and public libraries offer free homework spaces.

Take the opportunity to help your child to organise their time effectively. A visual planner can easily be printed out and filled out to include assignments, tests, and scheduled events. Bigger tasks can be broken down into manageable tasks and assigned a time frame to help children stay on track.

Depending on the age of your child, you may find an app or electronic diary with built in reminders and alarms work best.

There really is no magic formula when considering a study routine, but a good place to start is to consider your surroundings, sleep quality, organisation tools and exercise.

Book Review your

local Synagogue in 1967, at the time of the Six Day War, he dreamt two prophetic dreams. In his first dream he witnessed a bushfire type disaster on the escarpment of the Blue Mountains. The following night he dreamt that he saw earthquakes occurring around the world.

In 1994, Rod received a cryptic message where if A = 1, B = 2, C = 3, up to Z = 26, the gematria of his message added to 287, which was the combined gematria of Jesus Christ (151) and Virgin Mary (136). I.e. 151 + 136 added to 287.

In 1995 he recorded these two 1967 dreams and his message in his 1st book Bow in the Cloud

On Xmas Day 2001 Rod’s house and Plant Nursery were destroyed in a bushfire.

On the following day (Boxing Day) Rod heard on the news that an earthquake had occurred in Asia. The following Boxing Day (2002) an earthquake occurred in Hawaii. On Boxing Day 2003 an earthquake occurred in Bam, Iraq killing 30,000 people. The following Boxing Day (2004) the Boxing Day Tsunami occurred killing 210,000 people. On October 8 2005, 287 days after the Boxing Day Tsunami an earthquake occurred in Pakistan/ Kashmir, killing 80,000 people. This was followed 287 days after by an earthquake in China.

In this remarkable book, the author, Roderick Luckett, documents the evidence for a numerical code in the Bible. In fact, this book is full of numerical codes that will enlighten the reader to an angle of the Bible that they may never have experienced before. Four Bible Codes offers both skeptics and believers a gold mine of information that will prompt much thinking about the origins of the Bible.

Catholic Education Diocese of Wollongong Commits $120,000 in Scholarships to Help Overcome Teacher Shortage

Six top performing 2023 HSC graduates from Catholic secondary schools in the Macarthur and Illawarra will take their first step towards a career in teaching, after receiving a $20,000 scholarship from Catholic Education Diocese of Wollongong (CEDoW) to put towards their Education degree, along with a guaranteed permanent teaching position after graduation.

Students were awarded their scholarships at a ceremony held on Thursday 8th February 2024 at the Catholic Education Office, 86-88 Market St Wollongong.

The Step into Teaching scholarship program was introduced in 2020 to encourage more high performing CEDoW secondary school graduates to consider a career in teaching to help boost the teaching profession. Now in its fourth year, the program has supported a pipeline of 53 students at various stages of their degree.

Each scholarship recipient will receive:

• $20,000 towards the cost of their tertiary studies in primary or secondary education

• the option of part-time employment as a school support officer while they study; and

• a three year conditional permanent teaching position in a CEDoW school after graduation

The six worthy recipients are:

• Grace Pomery - St Joseph’s Catholic High School, Albion Park

• Chelsea Simac - St Benedict’s Catholic College, Oran Park

• Hayley D’Cunha - John Therry Catholic College, Rosemeadow

• Olivia Fielding - Holy Spirit College, Bellambi

• Kaitlin Kellett - John Therry Catholic College, Rosemeadow

• Kalan Nau - John Therry Catholic College, Rosemeadow

Chelsea Simac, a 2023 graduate from St Benedict’s Catholic College, Oran Park, is excited about the hands-on experience the Step Into Teaching program offers in preparation to becoming a teacher.

“Gaining this scholarship is extremely valuable to me as it ensures I receive extensive teaching experience and support throughout my university degree,” she said. “I am excited to work as a classroom School Support Officer whilst I'm studying as this unique opportunity available through the scholarship will assuredly enhance my skills as a teacher. The comprehensive academic, financial and moral support offered will be highly beneficial in preparing me for a career in the classroom.”

Director of Schools, Peter Hill, said teachers have a unique opportunity to transform students’ lives.

“Like never before, the young people in our schools need teachers who are women and men of hope, faith and life,” he said. “We all know that education—and a good teacher—can transform the lives of the students they encounter throughout their career, and I have great confidence our latest scholarship recipients will do the same.”

FOOD 4 THOUGHT

CREA

Shop 4A, Oran Park Podium

351 Oran Park Drive, Oran Park

This one's sure to tickle your tastebuds!

CREA is an Italian restaurant and Pizzeria, located at Oran Park Podium. The staff were delightful and greeted us as soon as we arrived. Seated in a small room towards the back of the restaurant, it was as if we had been transported back to Italy. The ambience, including the décor and music was authentically Italian. Soft drinks were ordered to quench our thirst, before the amazing food arrived. The entrée was Mozzarella Balls, consisting of four pieces of mozzarella coated in a crispy crumb. The mozzarella had that classic stretch, and the taste did not disappoint.

My favourite Italian food is pizza, so how could I pass up the opportunity of trying it? My main meal was BBQ Meat 2.0. A BBQ sauce base with mozzarella, ham, salami, bacon, Italian sausage, pepperoni, nduja (spicy, spreadable pork sausage), extra virgin olive oil and oregano. It was cooked to perfection and the combination of meats was great. Each meat had its own flavour, and my favourite was the nduja. Just the right amount of spice to add to this meaty treat.

Kobhi had the pasta, and he chose the Crab Linguini. It was made up of crab meat, garlic, parsley and rosa sauce. It normally comes with zucchini, but he ordered without it. The pasta was al dente and nice and firm. The rosa sauce was rich and delicious, with the right balance of tomato and cream. The crab complimented this well, with a nice sweetness to the meat.

All servings were generous. We left with full bellies and smiles on our faces. Overall, a wonderful experience of Italian cuisine right here in our local community.

PROBUS CLUB

Article Written + Submitted by: The Probus Club of Oran Park E: secretary.oranparkprobusclub@gmail.com

P: 0410758755

Oran Park Probus Club, founded in 2014, is celebrating its tenth anniversary on 29 February this year. Camden Mayor, Councillor Ashleigh Cagney, will be present at the celebration in Oran Park, together with three other invited guests, when twenty of the Club’s founding members will be formally recognised. All Members of the Club are invited to attend, and there will be a light luncheon and a birthday cake !

5 March is the date of the General Meeting of Oran Park Probus Club. This will be followed by the Club’s Annual General Meeting, when all the current Committee members will stand down and the new Management Committee for 2024 will be elected.

All our regular activities will continue as usual and perhaps some of our members will propose new activities that may be of interest to others - age appropriate of course, we do not know if skateboarding and bungee jumping would be acceptable!

Probus Clubs throughout Australia and New Zealand are social clubs that offer fun and friendship to members of the community who are retired or semi- retired. Day trips and outings are always popular, and some of our members will be joining a five-day River Murray trip on the ‘Proud Mary’ this month. Day trips have also been planned for an April outing to Katoomba, to go for a ride on the Zig Zag Railway, and in June a group will be off whale watching!

Visitors are always welcome to attend the General Meetings of Oran Park Probus Club, listen to one of our interesting Speakers and join members for lunch after the meeting. Meetings are held at Wests Lakeside Golf Club, 50 Raby Road, Gledswood Hills, commencing at 10.00am on the first Tuesday of every month, except January and November. Come along to see if what we offer would be of interest to you.

Please contact the Club Secretary for further details at secretary.oranparkprobusclub@gmail.com
