All Things Mum This Mothers Day For many mums around Australia, the day to day activities of running a home can be hard work. Add to this those that work and, in particular, those who own and run successful businesses and you have the ingredients for a truly special person. This is certainly the case for local Harrington Grove mum, Nikki Auckland. “It was very daunting starting my own business in 2005. I had a 4 year old daughter that was always sick, in and out of hospital and always at doctor’s appointments so I found holding down a regular job (even a part time one) too hard. My husband and I both needed to work to pay the bills, so I decided I needed to work for myself and juggle caring for our daughter around my work. I am a qualified Sports Therapist and Massage Therapist and had my Certificate III in Fitness. Initially it was hard getting everything set up, but I sought help from others around me that were self-employed. I asked a lot of questions and worked tirelessly to set up my business” said Nikki. “It got overwhelming for me in 2008 when we were blessed with our third child. We had never planned on having 3 children and it was a huge adjustment, I wasn’t coping at all. I had no balance and had virtually no help with the children and struggled immensely with anxiety, depression and agoraphobia. It was a hard couple of years as I stopped growing my business to focus on my health and my kids” she explained. Nikki decided she needed to get some balance and get well. She went back to fitness to help cope with the anxiety and depression; “I was lucky to have my husband support my return to fitness; he helped with the children while I got myself a Personal Trainer and went to the gym 4 nights a week and
Saturday mornings. After 6 months of consistency, I found myself feeling stronger and more confident than I had in a long time. I felt like a better mum as I had found some balance and was slowly beating my demons. I felt more focused in my business and really started to enjoy life again”. Recently, her business changed focus and Nikki studied again to re-do her Personal Training qualifications. She now runs her personal training business around her children and their schooling/studies and sporting activities. “I absolutely love the flexibility of having my own business and always tell my children that anything is possible if you put your mind to it” Nikki said. Nikki has this advice for any mums wanting to start their own business; “Make sure you have a to-do list and write everything down! I mean everything. It’s so satisfying crossing them off once they are done”. Thank you to Nikki and to all the mums out there for everything you do. “Mother’s Day is one of my favourite days, I get undivided attention from my kids and get even more cuddles and kisses which I absolutely love!” finished Nikki. FAITH – NEWLIFE ANGLICAN ORAN PARK
Article Written + Submitted by: Lead Pastor Stuart Starr @ New Life Anglican Church W: newlifeanglican.org.au E: stuart@ newlifeanglican.org.au A: Cnr Central Avenue + Marcus Loane Way, Oran Park
Open House Invitation I’m often in my office in our building up on the hill in Oran Park and have been surprised at how regularly we get people stopping by thinking that we’re the Council! Others of you will have seen our multicoloured tower and wondered what goes on inside the building. In order to get the word out that we’re a Church and not the council(!) and to enable the curious to have a look through, we’re holding our annual “Open House” event on Sunday May 21st. It’s an exciting time for us at NewLife with a brand new evening service having been started from April 30th. That means that there are two chances to join us at NewLife on the day. You can come and check out our morning service where we run our kids program for children aged 2-15 at 10am, or come in the evening for NewLife@night which runs at 6pm. We believe that many people will feel more confident coming along if they’ve clicked before they come so I’d love to point you to www.newlifeanglican.org.au to get a feel for the place, see who the staff team is, and understand what we offer for kids. When you come you’ll find our “Open House” to be in many ways a standard Sunday service where we’ll meet together to sing, pray, and hear the Bible read and taught. There’s absolutely no need to RSVP in advance but we’ll be having a free BBQ, and jumping castle after the 10am service and eat together after the 6pm meeting. At both services you’ll be free to have a look through the facility with a guided tour and ask any questions that you might have. We want you to feel that NewLife Anglican is your local Church and given our tower can be seen from lots of vantage points around our suburb, we want you to know what goes on beneath it. I look forward to meeting you on Sunday May 21st - do come and say Hi and let me know you read about it in the Oran Park Gazette
We had moved here March 2016 from Liverpool. March this year on the 10th made it one year. Who to discuss a problem with? But I thought of the District Gazette. Oran Park Road is a disgrace it is a place waiting for a accident to occur. Thankfully I am not a parent going to the schools as it is very dangerous. Pot holes which make your teeth rattle if you hit one and the road is very like a goat track you would find in a undeveloped country. This is Oran Park for goodness sake. We seem to have many people always working on the parks and Grand Prix park is always getting work done to it. Please fix the roads that lead into our beautiful Oran Park. Heres hoping we can see some road work which will be done very soon. H Harold

Letters Of Hope Encouraging our community to write a letter to a special person in a local Macarthur aged care facility or local Hospital to show them someone cares… Australia has one of the highest elderly dependency ratios in the world! Many elderly people who have lost their health, are being moved out of their homes and into aged care facilities. They lose their family home and most move into a small room. Many have lost all their material possessions and more often than not they have also lost their long term partner. Within this situation it can become very easy to feel lonely or isolated. Older people who are lonely and who do not have strong social networks and support, can be at risk of developing depression. Please help us by writing a letter to a special elderly person to show them someone cares… Anyone of any age can make a Letter of Hope. It can be a simple note of a few words or a drawing from a child. The envelope can be left plain or decorated. Letters of Hope make a great family ‘community project’ at a very minimal cost. Letter Suggestions • It is a good idea to not add any questions in the letter as the special person you write to may not be able to answer… • We recommend that you do not add any personal information. • If you or your child would like to sign off at the end we suggest you only put your first name or write something like from ‘Someone who cares’ • To get you underway, start your letter with Dear Special Person… • If you are not sure what to put next: Try This: • I thought of you today and wanted to let you know… • You are very special because… • I heard you needed a little cheering up so I thought I would write to you and say… • I heard you needed a little cheering up so I thought I would write to you and tell you about… • Today I… • I felt like saying hello to you and I hope you are having a good day and my letter has made you feel better… • Adding a picture/sticker of a bunch of flowers write- I saw these flowers and thought they would brighten your day… Finished letters can be sent to PO Box 31 Camden, NSW 2570 or hand delivered into the allocated tubs at CakeBiz Narellan or King Street Natural Health Centre Campbelltown. Letters of Hope, will be distributed to participating Aged Care Facilities in the Macarthur area, by Brand New Day volunteers.
Beau Ryan Comes to Oran Park Mancave Barbershop in Oran Park recently held a re-launch event last month that was attended by The Footy Show’s and ex-NRL player Beau Ryan. The event was to reintroduce the store after 4 years of it being opened and also to celebrate the addition of 1 extra barber chair within the store. Prior to the event on the day, Beau Ryan assisted with the promotion of Social Media (Instagram/Facebook); which had thousands of hits. He greeted customers on the day, gave Mancave Barbershop merchandise, took photos with fans and signed t-shirts. They also had the wonderful Under 11’s team from South West Wanderers FC join them on the day – which is currently being sponsored by Mancave Barbershop for the 2017 football season. “Beau Ryan is a friend and customer of ours. He also was at the Grand Opening of our Burwood Store 6 months ago”. “It was great to see how successful the event was on the day. It was amazing to see how many locals/customers came down to the event to show their support. The atmosphere was crazy, fun and exciting for all” said Shadi Sysan, Business Manager of Mancave Barbershop. When asked if they have any future events planned for the Mancave Barbershop Shadi said, “Most definitely in the near future. Our next event will be for the opening of our Rouse Hill store on the 13th May, which has taken months to plan. There will be special guests and other activities planned for the day!” “We love supporting the local community and earning their support back. We will continuously strive to make the local community and our customers happy. We also want to thank Oran Park Town Centre, the locals, our organisers and our loyal customers who supported us on the day!” he said.

500 Weddings commemorate them. Maureen also performs baby naming’s and commitment ceremonies as well as renewal of vows. Maureen travels all over Sydney as well as the Illawarra and the Southern Highlands performing weddings. Despite travelling, she said “There are many great spots here in the Macarthur area to choose from. Starting at very low cost Council Parks, to venues exclusively for weddings and plenty of other places in between, Macarthur brides and grooms are spoilt for options”. She has noticed that many brides are now opting for a more low key ceremony and are saving their money for a home, rather than expensive ceremonies. Born in Scotland, Maureen moved to the Macarthur area 11 years ago from the inner city and said “It was the best move we ever made. People are friendly and more outgoing in Macarthur”. Maureen Thorpe just loves her job, and why wouldn’t she? She is a local Marriage Celebrant who has performed nearly 500 weddings and over 800 ceremonies over the past 9 years. “Weddings are always a delight to perform. Watching the look on a groom’s face as his bride walks down the aisle is very special” said Maureen. Maureen has married couples of all ages, some in their teens and some in their late 70’s and even early 80’s. “It is lovely to see love at any age” she said. All her ceremonies are designed uniquely for the couple no matter how small or large the wedding is. However, she said there was something very satisfying when, after a funeral, she hears “Thank you for the beautiful send-off you gave Mum or Dad”. Even pet memorials have become meaningful, as many people treat the family pet as just that “one of the family” and are devastated when their pet passes away, so they want to

Council Plans New Play Spaces
WHAT’S COOKING
No-Bake Mixed Berry Pie
Ingredients 10 graham crackers ½ cup butter, melted 8 ounces cream cheese, softened ¼ cup maple syrup 1 cup blueberries 1 cup strawberries, sliced 4 tablespoons water 2 tablespoons lemon juice, about half a lemon ¼ cup sugar 2 tablespoons cornstarch
m To Muox with x
Method 1. Place graham crackers in a plastic bag and crush them into fine crumbs using a rolling pin. Alternatively, a food processor can be used to crush the crackers. 2. Pour the graham cracker crumbs into a medium bowl with the melted butter. 3. Mix until the crumbs take on the character of a coarse, wet sand. 4. Pour the crumbs into a 9-inch pie dish. Press the crumb firmly into the dish, making sure to coat the bottom and sides of the dish evenly. Once the crust has been formed, place the pie dish into the refrigerator to firm up. 5. In a medium-sized bowl, whisk together cream cheese and maple syrup. Once combined, pour the mixture into pie crust and return it to refrigerator to chill. 6. Meanwhile, add half of the blueberries and strawberries to a saucepan over medium heat. Add 2 tablespoons of water, lemon juice, and sugar. 7. Cook for 2-4 minutes or until sugar is dissolved and berries begin to expel their juice, creating a loose, deep-red mixture. 8. In a small bowl or ramekin, mix cornstarch and remaining 2 tablespoons of water into a smooth paste. Add the cornstarch mixture to the berries and cook for an additional 2 minutes, until the filling thickens. Remove from heat and set aside. 9. Allow the mixture to cool for 5 minutes. 10. Remove the chilled pie crust with the cream cheese layer from the refrigerator. Take the remaining blueberries and strawberries and evenly distribute them over the top of the cream cheese layer. 11. Next, pour the cooked berry mixture over the top of the fresh fruit and cream cheese, filling in the rest of the pie crust. Spread the filling evenly. 12. Chill the pie completely in the refrigerator for 1.5-2 hours before serving. 13. Enjoy! Four new district play parks are now planned for locations across the Camden Local Government Area. Last month, Council agreed to allocate $4 million for the design and construction of two large water play parks and two major youth play spaces. “It is a focus of Council to ensure that the community has high quality recreational facilities that support a healthy lifestyle and encourage social engagement,” said Mayor Lara Symkowiak. “This is an opportunity to create new, accessible and vibrant places for people to come and interact,” Cr Symkowiak said. “The leisure areas will promote safe, fun places for social connection and a space to interact with family and friends in our rapidly growing area,” she said. Eleven locations within the Camden LGA were evaluated by staff with the four sites selected for their accessibility, parking opportunities, availability of services, amenities and proximity to residents. Town Park in Oran Park and Curry Reserve in Elderslie have been identified for water play parks. Harrington Park Lake, Harrington Park and Sedgewick Reserve in Currans Hill have been selected for youth play spaces. It is anticipated that the planning, community consultation and construction of these facilities will be completed in approximately 18 months.

A Cracker of a Show! Camden Show, held last month was yet another HUGE success. To quote the President, Hugh Southwell, "we’ve had a cracker of a Show with good weather on the Friday and Saturday. A great crowd with many visitors happy with our efforts to manage the mud, create some shade and additional seating (new President's Picnic area) and put on many forms of entertainment and educational displays. We were thrilled with the endless throng of people coming through the gates." Once again the support of the community has been overwhelming. The 2017 Show filled the showground and offered all visitors TWO BIG DAYS OF FAMILY FUN! The quality and variety of displays, competitions and attractions was outstanding and offered our Show patrons enormous choice and a jam packed program. From early morning to late evening, the showground was full of things to keep visitors entertained. There were pavilions full of exhibits, a local talent competition, Wood Chopping, Whip Cracking, Horse and Animal shows, Charlie the Brahman Steer, Educational and Fun displays, the Drover’s Camp, Lifestyle and Country Style Pavilions as well as the NAB Entertainment Stage. The first day was the traditional “Community Day” and it was great to see such enthusiasm for agricultural education from Schools around the District, with thousands of school children attending the Show free of charge. Friday night had one of the best Rodeo programs in the state, with competitors from all over the country competing. It was surely an adrenaline rush for competitors and spectators alike. This year we welcomed back freestyle motocross to the main arena on the second night along with camp drafting, polo crosse, barrel racing and the famous Brumby’s Run. The second night finished with a bang thanks to the famous Foti Fireworks
display sponsored by Henning’s Jewellers. Hugh Southwell, the President, and the Show Committee offer a very big thank you to all those who helped to make The Camden Show the fabulous success that it was, including the hundreds of volunteers who give hours, days and weeks of their time to help us hold the Annual Camden Show. To the Sponsors, Tradespace tenants, Competitors, Exhibitors, Demonstrators, Displays and every person who visited the Show, we say a huge thank you for your support! Look out for next year's show! 2018 Camden Show, Friday 16th March & Saturday 17th March 2018

PET CHAT Article Written + Submitted by: Dr Liam Brown from University Veterinary Teaching Hospital Camden A: 410 Werombi Road, Camden | NSW | 2570 P: 4655 0777
Prevention, Always Better Than Cure An annual health check is a great way to stay on top of your animal’s health and wellbeing. A check-up goes far beyond their “annual needles” – a thorough examination by a veterinarian may be able to detect emerging problems early, or assess ongoing health concerns to ensure your pet receives the best possible care. During the annual check, your vet will assess multiple physical characteristics, all of which help them determine the health of your pet. For example, your pet’s weight will be measured to ensure it is in a healthy range, their skin will be examined for any lumps, bumps and other abnormalities, and their teeth will be assessed to detect early signs of dental disease. If your animal is getting a little older, your vet can also check on common senior animal issues such as arthritis, vision or hearing loss, mobility issues and dementia, and provide management advice or medication. Blood testing may also be recommended to screen for underlying disease processes. The annual vet check also provides an opportunity to administer vaccines if they happen to be required that year (keep in mind that some core vaccines can be given every three years), to discuss any concerns you have about your pet, and to get expert pet care advice on anything from behavioural problems to the most suitable flea, worm or tick treatments. For animals on long-term medications, an annual check-up as a minimum is usually required. Keep in mind that our pets age faster than we do, so a yearly check-up for them is not as frequent as you may think. One year for us can be equivalent to five or more years for your dog or cat. And, as with humans, most health issues can be treated more successfully if identified in their initial stages. Ultimately though, an annual vet check is all part of responsible pet ownership and will allow you to know you are doing your very best to ensure your pet remains happy and healthy.

Oran Con 3 is Back! based race car called the O’Farrell, raced here at Oran Park also. So, when the track closed and my family and I moved here, we spoke with some of my friends in the cosplay community and the owner of the Chocolate Room, Levon Beylerian and decided that it was important to bring something back to the Oran Park area and community” said David Duff, Event Organiser. With the great support of Oran Park Podium, Oran Con has gone from strength to strength. The first event was with the craft local markets, whilst the second, held in extremely cold conditions, showed that they had a following in both the local community and the cosplay community. This year they are inside the Oran Park Podium. “People like to leave the everyday and go to a special place where they can pretend to be someone or something else for a while. From dressing up as their favourite TV or movie character, comic book characters to something completely unique or from a video game, there is something for everyone. It’s important to learn how to play and have fun no matter what age you are” explained David. For more information, visit Oran Con on Facebook at www.facebook.com/ oranconnsw.

Ziggetty Snipits and Nitpro Gregory Hills specialise in haircuts, girl’s haircut packages, ear piercing, best friend packages, girl’s glamour party packages and head lice removal treatments for the whole family. “Our short term goals of the business are to promote and create awareness that our new salon in Gregory Hills is now open. The Ziggetty Snipits and Nitpro franchise first started around 10 years ago in Queensland. There are plans to open more salons around Australia, branching out to Victoria and Western Australia. Shaakira is proud to work in the local community and all that it offers; “The best part about working in the community is to know we are in good hands. This community is very close and are always looking out for each other. We are very happy to be a part of the local area and to assist them where we can” she said. The team at Ziggetty Snipits and Nitpro Gregory Hills are also proud to be able to provide a salon where parents and kids can feel safe and comfortable knowing that they can get their child’s haircut and not have to worry that they will be judged if their child screams. “We will go to the end of the earth to assist our clients in any way possible. We have many parents who have tried everything to remove head lice from their children, but are not succeeding. They come to us and are amazed at what we do and leave our salon feeling relieved. This makes us very proud to be a part of the Ziggetty Snipits and Nitpro Franchise” ended Shaakira. Ziggetty Snipits and Nitpro Gregory Hills are located at Shop 3, 67-77 Lasso Road in Gregory Hills. Their phone number is 02 8376 8874. For more information, visit their websites www. ziggettysnipits.com.au and www.nitpro.com.au.
Harrington Park Upgrade Complete
Shared
Path
Council has now completed renewal works to the shared path in Harrington Park Estate. The path surrounding Harrington Park Lake has now been reconstructed for the use of bicycles and pedestrians and completed to a high standard. The old path was cracking, uneven and around 25 years old. “Council is focused on providing recreational facilities and infrastructure to support the health and wellbeing of the community and the growing number of families in our area,” said Mayor Lara Symkowiak. “This shared path provides residents with safe access around the lake’s foreshore and an excellent opportunity for recreational activities,” Cr Symkowiak said. “Replacing the path to such a high quality was a sound decision of Council that will help to reduce maintenance costs into the future,” she said. The works to replace the former asphalt path were funded as a priority project in Council’s 2016/17 budget to the amount of $429,000 and forms a section of the path network within the estate. The 1.4km (approx.) path has been reinforced with mesh steel to minimise risk of displacement in the future.

MONEY MATTERS

Can I Afford to Retire? Once you reach your preservation age you can access your super, so you have a number of options available to you, for example: • You can stop work and use your super to maintain your lifestyle. • You can work part-time and convert all or part of your super to a ‘pre-retirement pension’. • You can carry on working full-time and continue to accumulate money in super. Once you’re age 60 or over, pension income payments are tax free (for most people). If you are retired and age 60 or over, lump sum withdrawals are also potentially tax free. Do I Have Enough Super To Stop Work? The decision to retire permanently largely depends on whether you have the financial resources available to last the rest of your life (which could be over twenty years). Especially since you won’t be able to access the age pension until you’re
atleast 65. Working out how much super you need to retire on is a good idea, so we recommend you speak to us about strategies appropriate for you. Work Part-Time And Access Your Super At The Same Time A pre-retirement pension is an option you can use if you’re still working and you’re over preservation age (55 if born before 1 July 1960 and increasing gradually until it reaches 60 for anyone born on or after 1 July 1964) but under 65. It allows you to convert your super into a regular income stream, but doesn’t allow you to take lump sum withdrawals until you’re fully retired. You can also continue to contribute (using salary sacrifice) back into your super to maintain or even grow your super balance for when you retire permanently. Building Up Your Super If you decide to continue working, there are several strategies you can use to get your super working harder. For more information, please feel free to contact us on 02 4628 3957.

As May has arrived, with it the crisp mornings and cooler nights. I am quite a fan of the freshness that arrives with May. Call me crazy, or keen for a challenge. Like many people before us, we have decided to tackle a 'Block-Style' renovation at our home of 17 years....... heading into Winter! It has been such an interesting introduction to the world of renovating. Currently we are in the 'de-clutter' phase. A case of recycle, re-use or remove. To sift through 17 years of accumulated 'stuff ' brings with it a certain sense of satisfaction as we start to clear it all out. Some items have been given away to friends and family who need it, other items donated to the Church and some have been listed to sell. It clearly demonstrates just how much 'stuff ' one accumulates over a lifetime; and how much of it is really necessary ? "Do the right thing, even when no one is looking, it's called integrity." For now, sit back with a cuppa in hand and enjoy your Community News.
