Council Accepts Two Grants To Assist Youth And Pet Owners Local young people and pet owners will benefit after Council accepted two grants totalling $68,000 at last months ordinary meeting. Council was successful in receiving $50,000 to set up the Camden Youth Joblink Program, as part of the NSW Government’s Local Youth Opportunities Program and $18,000 to install solar powered lighting at dog off-leash areas in Oran Park, Emerald Hills and Arcadian Hills from the Federal Government’s Stronger Communities Program. Mayor of Camden, Cr Therese Fedeli, said the grants would go a long way to helping the Camden community. “Council is consistently looking for ways to assist the community in every way possible and these grants will directly benefit both young people and pet owners using our off-leash dog areas,” Cr Fedeli said. “It is important to continue offering our young people in particular some help as they set themselves up for life and I am looking forward to seeing the Camden Youth Joblink Program come to fruition. “Camden is home to many beautiful pets and I am excited to see three of our offleash dog parks receive funding for solar powered lighting as well. “I’d like to thank the Australian and NSW Governments for the funding.” r Article: Camden Council

Gymnasium; Café; Creche; and Car parking. Mayor Therese Fedeli said the project was an exciting addition to the Oran Park Civic Precinct which already includes Council’s Administration Building and the Oran Park Library. “The Centre will be a fantastic community facility offering a place for social gathering featuring aquatic, indoor sports, and health and fitness areas,” Cr Fedeli said. “Excitingly, it will include the local government areas first 50 metre indoor swimming pool. The best thing is it’s not only in the centre of Oran Park Town, but in the heart of the Camden area as a whole. “Council is committed to delivering state of the art sporting facilities to the residents of the Camden area. This new Leisure Centre will add to a growing list of premium facilities including Narellan Sports Hub, Fergusons Land Cricket Facility, Nott Oval football field and the Kirkham BMX Facility. “Not only is it great to have these facilities right here in our own backyard for our residents to enjoy, but it also gives us the opportunity to host state, national and international level competitions which also benefits our local small businesses. Greenfields Development Company General Manager, Mick Owens concurred “This is another exciting facility coming to life in the Oran Park town centre. We are very grateful for the working collaboration with Camden Council in delivering this Leisure Centre”. The project is expected to be completed late 2024, subject to weather conditions. Main works to be tendered by Council in the near future. r Image/Article: Camden Council

Federal Labor Leader Anthony Albanese has announced $2.5 million in funding to provide better care for children with hearing loss in Sydney’s southwest. The funding will go towards a new Shepherd Centre facility in Oran Park, in the Macarthur region. Mr Albanese said children with hearing loss deserve the “best possible start in life”, which begins with care and support. “A Labor government will ensure our kids are looked after, whether through digital or on-the-ground support services. No child will be left behind,” he said. NDIS provider and charity, The Shepherd Centre already supports over 750 families across Australia, and these new sites will

provide critical access to early intervention hearing services for children with all levels of hearing loss, and mentoring programs for young people and teenagers with hearing loss in Sydney’s southwest, which is currently the fastest growing region of NSW. The centre will work with local services to provide families with access to world class treatment and clinical care.

Alongside the new facility, Labor has pledged $1.5 million to fund the development of a digital HearHub platform, an online service that will deliver listening development assessments and support for families to guide their individualised services and intervention. The online solution ensures that children’s local professionals can be supported around Australia, especially critical for those living in rural and remote areas. “We are delighted to be welcoming this new funding announcement for Southwest Sydney. The development of our new site will allow more children with hearing loss to be closer to early intervention treatment than ever before, with access to world class care in the comfort of their own area,” says Jim Hungerford, CEO of The Shepherd Centre. “The digital HearHub will see more children across Australia and their families connect with educational hearing services through their local professionals to support their progress,” he added. The new service will create several new jobs and provide clinicians and patients with access to world class hearing support equipment. This includes therapy rooms, world standard audiology booths used for Cochlear Implant testing, specially designed clinical and education areas. The Shepherd Centre has been enabling children with hearing loss to develop their listening and spoken language, literacy, and social skills for over 50 years, ensuring they can go on to achieve their full potential in life. The organisation currently supports hundreds of families across Australia with Online Telehealth for rural and regional areas and nine inperson locations in Tasmania, Canberra, Shellharbour, Wollongong, Oran Park, Liverpool, Macquarie, Newtown and Central Coast (Bateau Bay). r Image/Article: Federal Labor Leader Anthony Albanese/Seven Communications

Mum’s the Word

Oran Park Mums is a group on Facebook that connects Mums with a local supportive network of advice, support, and information. The inspirational group, which boasts over 3,500 members online, has also raised over $8,000 in fundraising over the last couple of years, that have assisted local people and charitable causes. “I moved to the area in 2018 and took over the role of Admin soon after. The support of the community has been amazing, and our members are good people” said Gypsy Brooke of Oran Park Mums. Prior to COVID and lockdown restrictions, the group held regular Mums meet-ups. This included the first one in 2018 at Mount Annan Botanic Gardens. Soon after, the group organised a Christmas Party the following year at Harrington Park, with 80 people attending. The hard work and dedication of Oran Park Mum’s members fundraising have helped a local Mum who needed brain surgery, assisted bushfire appeals, supported Elouera Horse Rescue and Rehabilitation, helped purchase ‘Bella’ the horse for Riding for the Disabled and aided a member who was moving. “The group has been this wonderful channel for many Mums to give advice and support through life experience and making friends. At the same time, there has been a lot of assistance from local businesses. If someone needs a hand, there’s no shortage of helpers” Gypsy shared. Whilst the group was originally for Mums only, Dads are welcome. Mums of fur babies can come together as well. There are rules in place to ensure the group is respectful. Members can post anonymously if they don’t wish to share their identity. If you are from Oran Park and surrounding suburbs and would like to join, search Oran Park Mums on Facebook.

On Sunday, May 8, 2022, supporters across the nation can walk, run or jog to unite for the silver anniversary of this iconic Australian event which does so much to lead in the fight against breast cancer. Over 1.5 million people have participated in the Mother’s Day Classic for breast cancer research over the past 24 years, making it Australia’s largest annual charity fun run and walk. “Major events are back! We are so excited to announce that there will be up to 70 event locations in major cities, metro areas and regional towns for Australians to register and get active for breast cancer research in 2022,” said Mother’s Day Classic CEO, Zara Lawless. “After two challenging years, having to first go virtual and then go local, the Mother’s Day Classic is now ready to deliver a fun and inspiring event experience in a COVID-safe manner that you won’t want to miss”. In Western Sydney, participants will experience the true magic of traditional MDC events. There will be the buzz of the event village, live entertainment, music, and food stalls to enjoy throughout the morning on Mother’s Day. “It’s great to be welcoming back our traditional MDC event experiences and celebrating 25 years of impact with communities right across the nation,” Ms Lawless said. “We cannot wait to see everyone in their pink attire and communities coming together on Mother’s Day to connect and raise awareness for the cause”. If you prefer staying local this year, there is an option to walk or run at one of the many local events that will be held across Australia on Mother’s Day. And if you can’t join one of the MDC physical events on Mother’s Day, you can personalise an event to create your very own MDC experience and take part on a different day, time, or location. Gregory Hills Light Up the Courts With the whistles now blown, signalling the start of the 2022 Campbelltown District Netball Association Winter Competition, Gregory Hills Netball Club are ready for the season ahead. This year marks their 8th season in the local competition, after it was established in 2015. This season will see 8 teams taking the court, consisting of 90 members. They will represent the club in junior and senior teams. The pandemic has affected the last two years of competition. This year, a full season including finals is anticipated for the sport. “Last season, we had 2 teams make Premiers (Division 7’s and Division 10’s) and 2 teams were Runners-Up (Division 3’s and Under 12B’s). This would have to be the highlight of our shortened 2021 season” explained Nancy Marshall, President of Gregory Hills Netball Club. Looking ahead in 2022, the club remain positive. “Apart from being able to play a full season, we are mostly looking forward to watching our players grow and develop in their netball skills, ability and friendships” she said Great support from within the community have meant that teams are full. “Our teams are currently full, but we are always happy for people to volunteer and support our club” Nancy replied. If you have a local business and would like to get behind the club and sponsor them, there are opportunities available. “Sponsorship would be a very welcome addition. That would support the growth of our small club through equipment, training and team building events” she ended. To know more about the club, they can be contacted via email at ghnc1@outlook.com or on Facebook by searching Gregory Hills Netball Club. r Gregory Hills Netball Club Under 10's | Image: Nancy Saleh

Let the Kids Play: The Value of Play for Children’s Development “Play is the work of the child,” according to physician and educator Maria Montessori. As our understanding of child development deepens, the value of play has only become more apparent. ‘Free play’ describes play that is unplanned, spontaneous, and led by the child’s curiosity, interest, or imagination. For example, a child starts to draw and decides to create their own board game on the page or to create their own map of the house. Free play is crucial for optimal physical, cognitive, social, and emotional development. Physical play involves moving the body and can look like kicking a ball around the yard or learning a new dance. This helps to build children’s muscles and bones. Constructive play is all about creating something, examples include building a block tower, painting a picture, and playing a song on a musical instrument. This supports children’s capacity to solve problems, connect new ideas and follow their curiosity. Social play happens when your child plays with other children. This gives children opportunities to develop important social skills such as cooperation, communication, and language. Fantasy play is when children use their imagination to create worlds and characters, for example playing dress up or pretending to be a mum and baby. These activities support social and cognitive skills. At Nepean Community and Neighbourhood Services, we offer free supported playgroups. Supported playgroups provide a fun and safe place for children to explore and engage with developmentally enriching activities such as sing-a-longs, story time, arts, craft, and free play. Playgroups are a great place to connect with other families in your area. Our friendly and knowledgeable staff are here to answer any burning parenting questions you may have, and to offer ideas for maximising play at home. With the support of Woolworths and Fujitsu, Mater Dei has launched ‘Mater Dei Fresh Food’, a fully functioning mini Woolworths store onsite at Mater Dei School. This initiative is aimed at supporting the education of students and young adults with an intellectual disability or developmental delay with hands-on learning experiences. Launched recently, the mini store has been established to mimic the operations of an actual Woolworths supermarket, with baskets for fresh food, shelving for groceries, ticketing, signage, and Woolworths branded uniforms the students can wear to create a fully immersive experience. At check out, grocery items are scanned using fully operational Fujitsu registers and include the experience of money handling, store receipts and the bagging of items. Mater Dei works with children and young adults with complex learning needs to provide innovative and contemporary education and therapy services. Uniquely, Mater Dei Fresh Food will be utilised by both Mater Dei School (K-12) and the Young Adults of Mater Dei’s NextPath Continuous Learning program. NextPath Continuous Learning was established to enable and empower young adults with an intellectual disability to engage in a process of self-determination to develop educational and life skills. Mater Dei CEO/Principal Mark Raue said “The Mater Dei Fresh Food store will provide immeasurable benefits to Mater Dei, not just for our students and young adults, but also for our teachers, families, carers, supporters, and our wider community. This is a tremendous initiative that allows us to continue our mission of providing contemporary research and evidence-based educational experiences for our students and young adults, in ways that will enable them to be fully participating members of their respective communities. The new mini Woolworths at Mater Dei is the sixth mini supermarket of its kind in Australia, and the first to be launch in Sydney’s South West. It is also the first to feature a wheelchair accessible register, to meet the needs of Mater Dei’s students and young adults. Major Milestone Reached for New Primary School in Gregory Hills The new primary school in Gregory Hills is taking an exciting step forward, following the lodgment of the Secretary’s Environmental Assessment Requirements (SEARs) application requests. Member for Camden Peter Sidgreaves said he was thrilled to announce this important milestone for the new primary school at Gregory Hills. “Plans are progressing for the new primary school in Gregory Hills, and I look forward to seeing the project take shape in the

coming months,” Mr Sidgreaves said. “The school will include fit-for-purpose learning spaces and core facilities to support the growing area catering for approximately 1,000 students and will greatly benefit the Gregory Hills community”. The community is invited to an information booth at Gregory Hills Town Centre on Wednesday 11 May from 3pm to 5pm (near Woolworths) to ask questions and learn more about the upgrade. Minister for Education Sarah Mitchell said she was delighted to see the new primary school in Gregory Hills is progressing. “I’m proud that we are continuing our record investment in school infrastructure across NSW. We are working hard to provide schools with modern facilities designed specifically for their community,” Ms Mitchell said. The NSW Government is investing $7.9 billion over the next four years, continuing its program to deliver 215 new and upgraded schools to support communities across NSW. This is the largest investment in public education infrastructure in the history of NSW. r Gregory Hills Secretary’s Environmental Assessment Requirements (SEARs) Indicative Layout | Image/Article: Peter Sidgreaves MP

Construction Underway on New $6.19M Oran Park Fire Station Construction has commenced on a new $6.19 million fire station in Oran Park. Member for Camden Peter Sidgreaves joined Fire and Rescue NSW Acting Commissioner Megan Stiffler recently to inspect work on the multi-million dollar project. “I’m pleased to report that excavation work and soil removal is now underway at the site, located on the corner of Dick Johnson Drive and Southwell Road,” Mr Sidgreaves said. “This $6.19 million will see a new two-storey fire station constructed, as well as a brand-new fire truck, new HAZMAT appliance and other associated equipment. “Oran Park’s new fire station is reflective of the NSW Government’s ongoing commitment to ensuring the safety of our local community by providing firefighters with the best possible equipment and amenities so they can get on with the job they do best: saving people and property. “This new station represents a major investment in firefighting resources and community safety in south-western Sydney. It will meet the needs of our growing local community and continue to provide the best possible service to the people of Oran Park and surrounding suburbs”. Acting Commissioner Megan Stiffler said the new station has been designed to meet the needs of a modern fire service. “It will feature modern training and recovery facilities to ensure firefighters are trained, rested and ready to respond to fires, rescues, road accidents, chemical spills and other emergencies,” Acting Commissioner Stiffler said. “The new station will provide firefighters with the facilities they need to ensure they are prepared for anything – to help anyone, anywhere, anytime”. Construction of the fire station is expected to be completed in late 2022. r Feature Article [Cover] Artist’s impression of Oran Park Fire Station [Above] Fire and Rescue NSW Acting Commissioner Megan Stiffler, Member for Camden Peter Sidgreaves MP and Justin Tabone (Axis Constructions Project Manager) | Images: Peter Sidgreaves MP

Oran Park Probus Club

Probus Clubs throughout Australia are social Clubs for retired and semi-retired people within the community that promote friendship, fellowship, and fun. The next General Meeting of Oran Park Probus Club will be held on Tuesday May 3, 2022. Our monthly meetings are held in the function room of Wests Lakeside Golf Club at Camden, commencing at 10.00am. Each month, we invite a guest speaker to give a talk. Topics are many and varied and often involve a power point display with photographs, a video and sometimes stand-up comedy or singing. Many of our members stay after the meeting to enjoy a sociable lunch together at the Club. Members have been looking forward to enjoying more outings and activities together this year. Sadly, the recent heavy rain and flooding caused the postponement of our Barefoot Bowling Day, but we are hoping this can be re-scheduled soon. The coffee and chat mornings are always popular, as well as pub lunches and fine dining. Other regular group activities include family history, craft, walking and movies. Outings to Gledswood Homestead, Berrima Gaol and the new Western Sydney Airport site are planned for the next couple of months. If this has piqued your interest and you would like to find out more about Oran Park Probus Club or Probus in general, please come to a meeting as a visitor. You will be welcomed. For more information, please call the secretary on Ph: 0410 758755 or email: secretary.oranparkprobusclub@gmail.com. r Last month's talented Speaker Entertainer | Image Supplied

Better Balloting from the Bible?

In the schoolyard of my childhood, teams were picked from a line of all available options. Who went first? The best player you could find. When it comes to a Federal election, what selection criteria should we employ? Let’s consider the Bible’s wisdom on some characteristics we might be tempted to use. What if we took appearance as the guide - maybe, ‘this one looks more trustworthy than the other bloke’? We overhear a similar conversation when Israel is considering who should be king; “But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart”. What about prioritising other physical traits, hours worked, or how hard they drive their staff? “I have seen something else under the sun: The race is not to the swift or the battle to the strong, nor does food come to the wise or wealth to the brilliant or favor to the learned; but time and chance happen to them all”. It may be that someone has a better record, but will it project forward into a job that asks so much? What about wisdom? Who could truly claim to be the wisest candidate? Wouldn’t we all consider ourselves needing help here? There’s a ton of encouragement in the Bible in that case: “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you”. May God indeed grant us wisdom and guide and direct our votes this May and, when He does so, may we peer beneath the surface as we have our say. FAITH – ST MARY MACKILLOP CATHOLIC PARISH ORAN PARK

Article Written + Submitted by: Fr David Catterall MTh - Parish Priest @ St Mary MacKillop Catholic Parish Oran Park P: 02 4648 2226 W: www.marymackillopparish.org.au A: 94 Oran Park Drive, Oran Park NSW 2570 Facebook: www.facebook.com/oranparkparish Twitter: www.twitter.com/oranparkparish While our supermarkets have moved on from Easter, with shelves now cleared of Easter Eggs and other related seasonal products, once again this year we all need the spirit of Easter to live on. As Pope Francis said, due to the Covid-19 protocols and restrictions of the last few years, “the lives of millions of people have suddenly changed. For many, remaining at home has been an opportunity to reflect, to withdraw from the frenetic pace of life, stay with loved ones and enjoy their company. For many, though, this is also a time of worry about an uncertain future, about jobs that are at risk and about other consequences of the current crisis”. As he went onto say, “This is not a time for indifference, because the whole world is suffering and needs to be united in facing the pandemic. This is not a time for self-centredness, because the challenge we are facing is shared by all, without distinguishing between persons. This is not a time for division. May Christ our peace enlighten all who have responsibility in conflicts, that they may have the courage to support the appeal for an immediate global ceasefire in all corners of the world. This is not a time for forgetfulness. The crisis we are facing should not make us forget the many other crises that bring suffering to so many people”. But what is this a time for? For me, I think it is a time when we are being invited, amongst the members of our household and in our circle of acquaintances, to create a strong web of love to hold and care for everyone as this crisis continues to unfold. It also demands of us a patience and tolerance, and a willingness to share, and do tasks we might have taken for granted belonged to others. “Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these, you did to me”. (Matt 25:40)

Harrington Park Over 55’s Social Club

Harrington Park Over 55’s Social Club is open to men and women over 55, who would like to socialise and have fun. The group meets monthly at the Harrington Park Community Hall, on the first Monday of the month at 10:00am. Each month, they have a guest speaker, and entertainment on the day. Morning tea is also supplied. To join Harrington Park Over 55’s Social Club, there is a once only joining fee of $25.00, then $25.00 for yearly membership. An attendance fee of $5.00 each month includes the entertainment and morning tea. Other activities that they participate in include dine out lunches, bus trips and theatre/cinema outings. “It is a very friendly and welcoming social group. There are great opportunities to make new friends” said Phil Weller, President of Harrington Park Over 55’s Social Club to the Oran Park Gazette. “Groups like ours help seniors to get out of the house, away from the drudgery of the same old routine and socialise. They assist in stopping senior members becoming lonely and bored in life, especially now that COVID restrictions are starting to lift” he continued. If you would like more information about Harrington Park Over 55’s Social Club, contact Phil Weller on 0413 526307. r Make new friends | Image: www.pexels.com

FROM THEWORD EDITOR THE LAST This month we stop to cherish our Mums on Mother’s Day. To all our mothers, grandmothers, and wonderful role models in our lives, we wish you a delightful Mother’s Day. May your children bring you joy and with any luck breakfast in bed. For those whose Mums were taken too soon, treasure the magic moments and memories that spark joy and happiness of better days before it. We get a real kick out of all the happenings in and around the community, May is no exception! Moreover, the Election has been called I’m sure we’re not the only ones who can’t wait for it to be behind us. For now, sit back, don’t forget your pencil for the puzzles, relax with a cuppa or cold drink while we start compiling the June edition for your reading pleasure! Remember, it’s not what we have in life, but who we have in our lives that matter.
