Every year when Halloween arrives, homes around the country are transformed into haunted houses filled with monsters, ghosts, and all things spooky. For the Chiellini family of Gregory Hills, it’s an opportunity to share their amazingly scary display with the community. “I enjoy watching scary, horror movies. One particular Halloween, our daughter was doing theatrical makeup and we went trick or treating with all the makeup done. Everyone was complimentary of the way we looked, and we just had lighthearted fun. Not long after, we decided to create the display” explained Lina Chiellini. The local family have been building their popular Halloween display for the past 4 years. Skipping 2020 due to the pandemic, it returned this year with great success. “The community support has been sensational every year that we have put up the Halloween display. This year, we put it out there on Facebook to locals to see if we should go ahead and it was overwhelming. So many people wanted us to do it as all the kids and most of the adults love it,” she said. Trick or treaters were greeted by a big redback spider, skeletons, mummies, werewolves, witches, clowns, bats, goblins and more. “Seeing the kid's faces light up with excitement, even those who are slightly scared, just makes all the effort worthwhile. We love the fact that it brings our community together and we converse and make friendships that most likely would not occur if not for the Halloween display” ended Lina. r The Chiellini’s Halloween display | Image: Lina Chiellini

Get Rocking NSW Rocks, the popular rock painting group was created right here in the Macarthur. The Facebook group has just celebrated a huge milestone, reaching 100,000 members. The group, which formed 4 and a half years ago in May 2017, passed the milestone in August. Since then, it has continued to grow and now has over 121,000 members! The recent lockdown restrictions have seen the popularity of rock painting skyrocket, with many families enjoying the activity whilst doing their daily exercise. “We were inspired to start NSW Rocks after reading a story about WA Rocks. The group was initially formed for family and friends and just grew from there” said Maddy Sen of NSW Rocks. “It is a great activity that is shared by families. It’s recreational for children as it gets them out into the outdoors and away from tech. Many adults find it relaxing and stress-free. It helps with their mental health and gives them opportunities to spend more time together with their families” she added. The single act of painting a rock and hiding it for others is selfless and spreads kindness. Many members who find these rocks liken it to finding treasure and that it makes their day. “Our members are full of compassion and empathy. It is so inspiring to see the work that they do and the many friendships that have formed over the years because of this” Maddy delighted. Prior to lockdown, rocks from the group have turned up right around the world. Photos of finds from countries like India, Canada and New Zealand have been posted online. The group’s administration has also been recognised by Dr Mike Freelander MP for their work. This also includes countless messages of support daily from rock painting enthusiasts. With Christmas a little over a month away, plans are in place for a themed drop. “We have plans for a Christmas Rock Drop, provided there are no further lockdown restrictions in place. Watch this space” ended Maddy. If you would like to join the group, search NSW Rocks on Facebook.

Thank You Mr G!
Did you know he have our very own street library in the local community? Mr Gilbert, the Street Library popped up during lockdown last year and he’s not your average library! Mr G, as he is affectionately known, is bright red and looks a lot like a British telephone booth. In fact, he was even named after Mr Gilbert, the architect of the traditional British telephone booth. “My husband and I built the street library during the lockdown in 2020, as a gift to our community” said Leanne Sykes to the Oran Park Gazette. “We created Mr Gilbert for people to have easy access to free books. Unfortunately, not everyone can afford books and when our local libraries closed in lockdown 2020 and 2021, it deprived people of access to books” she continued. Mr Gilbert can hold between 250-300 books. The street library has had all kinds of books donated, for children, adults, and families. From time to time, you may just find donations of DVD’s, craft items and games on the shelves too. “Everyone is welcome to use the library! You take what you would like and donate what you can, it’s that simple. You don't need to have books to swap” smiled Leanne. The beloved street library has already been embraced by the local community. “We could never have dreamed of the impact the street library would bring. It has brought us together as a community. In 2020, we did a Nursing Home Christmas Drive. This saw regular users of the library donate gifts for us to be able to give to our seniors at the local nursing homes. “This year when COVID struck again and we went into lockdown, we added a food pantry and the generosity of the community to help others was beyond words. Over 6,000 food items were donated and then we were able to help our most vulnerable members of our community, which will be something I will never forget. The outpouring of love and support for each other from the supporters of a little street library on a rural road was amazing” she reflected. Mr Gilbert will be on hand again for this year’s Nursing Home Christmas Drive. “The library has brought together people with a common interest that has grown into something quite remarkable. I’m hoping we receive the ongoing support with our Nursing Home Christmas Drive. The street library is located on Barry Avenue in Catherine Field. For more information, search Mr Gilbert, the Street Library on Facebook. r Mr Gilbert, the Street Library | Image: Leanne Sykes

Upgrade on Cards for Harrington Park Reserve
Harrington Park Reserve is set for an upgrade with Council endorsing a masterplan for the site at last month’s ordinary Council meeting. The reserve was identified as a high priority upgrade as part of Council’s Sportsground Strategy (2020-24). The masterplan includes: • A new, upgraded amenities building including changerooms, clubroom, storage and kiosk, referee room; • Provision of a range of soccer fields including national/regional level fields, local level fields and fields for younger user groups; • Improvement of existing car parks and provision of additional parking; • Improved floodlighting, seating, and shade structures; • Additional planting and landscape works; • Outdoor exercise area; • Improved accessibility including shared pathway, carparking and provision of bike racks; and • Relocation and reconfiguration of the hardcourts to the Harrington Park Youth Play Space facility. Mayor of Camden, Cr Therese Fedeli, said it was important to continue upgrading sport and recreation facilities in the area. “Council is dedicated to providing residents with a range of sporting opportunities at fantastic facilities,” Cr Fedeli said. “The site currently has a single amenities block which users have already outgrown. It is fantastic to see there will be so many great upgrades at this location. “I look forward to seeing the completion of the works and locals using the facility on a regular basis”. The first stage of the Harrington Park Reserve Masterplan is funded by Council’s COVID-19 Community Support Package at the value of $5 million. NewEmail Subscription Services Available
Three Playground Upgrades Completed
Accessing information on development applications and matters on exhibition in Camden has never been easier with Council launching two new email subscription services. Residents can now sign up to the service to receive a weekly email containing a comprehensive list of the new development applications that Council has placed on public exhibition. Subscribers will receive a brief rundown on each development application, as well as a link to Council’s online DA tracker, where users can access detailed information on each application. Residents can also sign up to receive email notifications on Matters on Exhibition at Council’s new community engagement portal – Camden Matters. Mayor of Camden, Cr Therese Fedeli, said the announcement adds to the transparency around developments in the local area. “Residents have always been entitled to be aware of developments around them and this new service adds to our current offering on our website,” Cr Fedeli said. “Whether you are a homeowner, business owner, investor or visitor, these weekly email subscription services can be highly beneficial to your needs. “Council is always available to its residents, so I encourage those interested to register their interest and contact Council with any questions they may have”. To sign up to the email subscription services, go to www.camden.nsw.gov. au/development or matters.camden. nsw.gov.au.
Another three playground upgrades have been completed recently as Council’s COVID-19 Community Support Package continues for the community. Council will invest $130.6 million across the three stages of its COVID-19 Community Support Package to support residents and local businesses suffering the shock of COVID-19, with the following playgrounds completed: • McCrae Drive Playground Upgrade, Camden South - installation of new playground equipment and park furniture, replacement of softfall rubber and landscaping works; • Royal George Drive Playground Upgrade, Harrington Park installation of new playground equipment and park furniture, installation of shade sail, replacement of soft-fall rubber and landscaping works; and • Yandel’ora Equipment Upgrade, Mount Annan - installation of new contemporary fitness equipment as well as park furniture and a bubbler, replacement of soft-fall rubber and landscaping works. Mayor of Camden, Cr Therese Fedeli, said it was important for Council projects to continue as they gave the community a massive boost moving forward. “Council is committed to assisting the community as we work through these unprecedented times and the completion of these three projects is fantastic for all of our residents,” Cr Fedeli said. “It’s estimated all three stages of our support package will boost Camden’s economy by up to $221.7 million and generate up to 507 new jobs. “I am proud to see Council working hard in helping the community in a variety of ways in coming out of the COVID-19 pandemic as strong as possible and this is no exception”. The completion of the three projects follows the installation of a wire rope fencing with two gates at Macquarie Grove Road Reserve, completed in June this year as part of the COVID-19 Community Support Package. Keeping Children Safe Online: What are they doing? In a time when social distancing is key to addressing the evolving public health issue of COVID-19, the internet allows children to learn, connect and create. However, going online is not risk-free. This month, we conclude our three-part series on keeping children safe online. According to eSafety research, approximately 15% of children and 24% of teens admitted to behaving in a negative way with a peer online. When we consider children’s developing capacity to manage big emotions and impulses, as well as their growing interpersonal skills, this makes sense. Children need your guidance to develop respectful social behaviour both online and offline. Online communication can be difficult to navigate due to the often-faceless nature of it. It’s important to speak to your children about how this disconnection can make it feel like online actions and words are not as hurtful. However, we know that the adverse consequences on the mental health of someone being bullied online is not just equivalent to being bullied in person, but in some cases can be worse. We must encourage children to behave online just as they would in the real world. Drawing up a Family Technology Agreement is a great way to talk about the values that you share as a family. These agreements outline your expectations around the use of internet-enabled devices. Agreements can cover the amount of time spent online, the way your child is expected to behave online, and what your child will do if they feel worried or upset about something they see online. Navigating the online world successfully requires a certain level of maturity, discernment, knowledge, and skill; it is not simply about reaching a certain age. Therefore parents must play a proactive role in supporting their children’s online behaviour from the first turn using the iPad to their first personal mobile phone, and beyond. For more information and resources on this topic, please visit the eSafety Commissioner’s website on https://www.esafety. gov.au/parents.
Camden Becomes Guinness World Records™ Title Holders Camden, you are World Champions! Camden has made history after being recognised as a Guinness World Records™ title holder for the largest online quiz! Council broke the record at last month’s online event with 2,328 participants in the quiz for 92 minutes, officially putting Camden into the Guinness World Records™ for the first time ever. Mayor of Camden, Cr Therese Fedeli, said it was fantastic to end lockdown with the world’s biggest online quiz. “Camden’s history is unquestionable, and I am so immensely proud to have been able to help our beautiful area once again make history,” Cr Fedeli said. “Guinness World Records™ has been around since 1955 and it is such a privilege for us to be able to add Camden into the historic records book. “Attempting to break this record was about showing how well we can stick together while having fun and making it a fantastic final hurrah from lockdown that we will all remember for years to come, and we sure will. “I’d like to thank everyone who took part in the fun-filled night and congratulate you all on the feat of breaking a Guinness World Records™ title”. Participants were asked to complete all questions and actively take part in the quiz for the entire duration. r Guinness World Records™ official adjudicator Brian Sobel with Council’s certificate | Image/Article: Camden Council

Local Student Named the State’s Best at NSW Training Awards Adam Hansen from Oran Park has been named Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student of the Year at the 2021 annual NSW Training Awards. Member for Camden Peter Sidgreaves said Adam has made Camden proud and will go on to represent NSW at a national level. “Adam has been delivering Aboriginal cultural competency workshops for more than 10 years and has worked with high schools to encourage Aboriginal participation in education,” Mr Sidgreaves said. “Adam has now gone on to study at TAFE NSW to become a teacher and further inspire our local community”. Adam said he’s passionate about sharing Indigenous culture with people who may not be familiar with Aboriginal knowledge. “I’m proud to bridge the gap between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal Australians,” Adam said. “I’m now qualified to deliver workshops to a range of people and organisations and, in turn, make a huge impact on my community”. NSW Minister for Skills and Tertiary Education Geoff Lee congratulated Adam on receiving the prestigious award after he completed a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment at TAFE NSW. “It is a great honour to be recognised on a State level and I have no doubt Adam will go on to be a great ambassador for vocational education and training,” Mr Lee said. “The students, educators and training providers represented at the NSW Training awards are living proof that NSW’s training system is gold standard. “I congratulate Adam on being named NSW Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Student of the Year and wish him the best when he represents NSW at the Australian Training Awards.” The NSW Training Awards are conducted annually by the NSW Department of Education in recognition of outstanding achievements in VET. A Game of Pure Excitement The Camden Junior Oztag Summer season has just kicked off and it looks set to be their biggest year yet! The Summer Competition, which began on Monday 25th October, is played at Liquidamber Reserve in Narellan Vale and Jack Brabham Reserve in Oran Park. There are three nights of competition (Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday) each week. On Monday nights, it’s the Mixed Competition Under 12’s, Under 14’s and Under 16’s age groups. On Tuesday nights, it’s the Boys and Girls Competitions – all age groups Under 6’s to Under 16’s, whilst Wednesday nights are the Boys Competition – all age groups Under 6’s to Under 16’s. This season, they have approximately 180 players registered. This includes a minimum of 10 players per team. Last year saw the Camden Cobras first ever State Cup Division 1 Gold Medal winners, with the Under 15’s Boys. The Under 12’s and Under 17’s Girls and the Under 16’s Boys all won Gold in Division 2. The growth in the Girl’s Competition saw the Girl’s team numbers well up on last season. They also have a few all-girls teams playing in the boys’ competitions. “It’s a great sport as its all-inclusive. It doesn't matter on skill level or fitness level, fast or slow, anyone can play. Being minimal contact, there is the ability to play in mixed competitions as well” said Luke Bickhoff of Camden Junior Oztag. “Seeing the kids coming off the field with a smile on their faces win, lose or draw. Watching our 6’s show what the game is all about and the elation on their face when they score their first try or make their first tag. It’s absolute pure joy” he smiled. Oran Park Probus Club
Although NSW will be opening up slowly this month, Oran Park Probus Club will not be able to hold face-to-face meetings in October or November, as our regular venue will not be available to us. As the December meeting is the last meeting of the year, the members are hoping to attend a face-to-face meeting in December with a Christmas lunch to follow. This would be a great way to end a year full of hardship for so many people. Time will tell. Next year, meetings will resume in February 2022 when the Club hopes to recommence a lot of the activities that have been ‘on hold’ during this pandemic and lockdowns and get back to the friendship, fellowship and fun that being a Probus member is all about! Oran Park Probus Club has continued to hold ZOOM General and Committee meetings throughout the lockdown. We have been lucky to have had speakers that have been able to make their presentations via ZOOM. Two recent topics, Assistance dogs and Angel Flight highlighted the work of these two charities and the selflessness of people who donate their own time and resources to help others. At a ZOOM presentation about the redevelopment of Campbelltown Hospital, one of the members asked a question about seating in public areas. As a community group, it is rewarding to know that someone has listened and acted upon a suggestion from the public and, to receive feedback that there will be increased seating in certain public areas of the new building. Probus is a social group for retired and semi- retired people in the community, a great way to make new friends and develop some new interests or hobbies. Monthly meetings are usually held on the first Tuesday of the month and once the Club recommences regular face-to-face meetings, Oran Park Probus Club will welcome visitors and new members. If you would like to know more about Probus or Oran Park Probus Club, please contact the Secretary by email: secretary. oranparkprobusclub@gmail.com or by phone: 0410 758755. Have you met my friend? So, lockdown life has officially ended. It’s time for us to re-emerge and re-engage with our community and our world. I’m glad that doors are opening, families can be reunited, and friendships rekindled. As all this thawing happens, we get a chance to not only catch up with those we know but also to meet new people... and not on a screen! Remember when we used to say, “have you met my friend?”, I can’t wait to do it again. At NewLife, our doors will be re-opening too. From November 7th we’ll be opening at 9:30am and 6pm as our regular Sunday services resume. It’ll be a great time to come to church for the first time since nearly everyone will be ‘new’ in some sense - you’ll fit right in! If you’ve been thinking about meaning and purpose in your life, taken some time to slow down and reconsider your priorities, or simply missed meeting with new people in your own community, NewLife is a great place to gather. In his first letter the Apostle John writes, “Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God.” If you haven’t had a chance to get to know God in this way yet, we’d love to meet you at the door over the next few Sundays - especially if you’ve never visited our building before and to introduce you to some other locals on a similar journey. Our services will be COVID Safe, we’ll wear masks, have a well-ventilated space and, beyond all that, there will be a warm invitation from me to say, “Have you ever met my friend Jesus?” We look forward to getting to know you and introducing you to the God we have come to love through Him. FAITH – ST MARY MACKILLOP CATHOLIC PARISH ORAN PARK
Article Written + Submitted by: Fr David Catterall MTh - Parish Priest @ St Mary MacKillop Catholic Parish Oran Park P: 02 4648 2226 W: www.marymackillopparish.org.au A: 94 Oran Park Drive, Oran Park NSW 2570 Facebook: www.facebook.com/oranparkparish Twitter: www.twitter.com/oranparkparish “The only thing in life that is permanent is change. Change is the one constant in life” (Fallin, 2013) I came across this quote in one of the “Wellness Packs” that has been put together by CatholicCare Wollongong. It’s a good quote for us to remember. As the rates of vaccination increase, and NSW and our nation moves into phases of ‘re-opening’ we still need to remember that during this time we aren’t returning to some ‘new normal’ where things will never change again. If there is anything this pandemic has taught us it is that change is part of life, and we need to do all we can to support one another and care for ourselves so that we can face these changes. As St Paul says in his first letter to the Church in Thessalonica “encourage one another and build each other up” (5:11) May I suggest that to offer such encouragement and support (to ourselves and others) we need to turn to reliable resources and tools, and at the same time we need to remember that we are not alone, and to use the services that are available if we need help or assistance such as CatholicCare Wollongong (02) 4227 1122 – catholiccare.dow.org.au, Lifeline 13 11 14 - lifeline.org.au or Beyond Blue 1800 512 348 - coronavirus.beyondblue.org.au. Dance Teacher Charged Over Alleged Historical Sexual Abuse Of Student – Camden A dance teacher will appear in court over the alleged sexual abuse of a male student in Sydney’s south west 10 years ago. In June this year, detectives from Camden Police Area Command commenced an investigation following reports a young boy had been sexually abused by a male dance teacher between 2011 and 2012. Following extensive investigations, detectives executed a search warrant at a home at Harrington Park from 8am (Tuesday 12 October 2021). A 35-year-old man was arrested and taken to Narellan Police Station where he was charged with two counts of aggravated indecent assault – victim under authority of offender. Police will allege in court that the man, who is a dance teacher, sexually abused a male student – then aged between nine and 11 – in Sydney’s south west. He was granted conditional bail to appear in Picton Local Court on Tuesday 9 November 2021. FROM THEWORD EDITOR THE LAST November is now upon us, and Spring is well and truly in the air! ‘Freedom Day’ has already arrived and catching up with our loved ones is now a reality. Business is slowly returning to normal, with doors now open. It’s the perfect time to get out and support local business. Let’s all welcome them back after a tough few months. Thank you again to our longstanding and loyal advertisers and readers; and to those who have joined us this year. By supporting our advertising businesses, you’re supporting us too! On Thursday 11 November we remember our fallen heroes, and those that have died in the line of duty. We truly wouldn’t have experienced the ‘Freedom’ that we now know, without their courage and sacrifices. Grab yourself a cuppa, put your feet up and enjoy your community news. It’s your last chance before the Christmas rush. Community is about doing something together that makes belonging matter.
