POSITION VACANT

Camden could soon be home to the next BMX Olympian after Council officially opened Kirkham Park BMX Facility recently.

The opening coincided with the facility hosting the 2022 AusCycling BMX State Championships.

Upgrades to Kirkham Park BMX Facility, which cost $5.56 million in total, make it an international-level venue, with works including:

• An eight-metre start hill;

• Elite first straight;

• Ramps;

• Warm-up track;

• Marshalling area with staging shelter;

• All weather pump track;

• Storage building;

• New internal connecting road;

• Additional car parking;

• New pedestrian bridge over drainage channel;

• Concrete pathways; and

• Associated civil, electrical, lighting and landscaping works.

Mayor of Camden, Cr Therese Fedeli, said the facility would be a popular spot for many young and aspiring athletes whilst also attracting riders from all over Australia.

“Council is dedicated to providing its residents with new high-quality facilities, and this facility is definitely one of the jewels in our crown,” Cr Fedeli said.

“It's been amazing being part of this process because we’ve learnt so much about the sport and the tracks themselves.

“The facility also welcomes casual users to access the pump track which is open for riders of all ability levels.

The pump track provides a circuit that includes rollers, banked turns and jump features to provide riders with a number of riding options through internal loops.

The four different loops for riders to use, include a beginner loop, intermediate/ expert loop, expert jump and snake-run loop and the berm corner turns.

Kirkham Park BMX Facility was completed in two stages, with stage 2A co-funded by Council and the NSW Government’s 2019/20 Greater Sydney Sports Facility Fund.

The upgrade to the BMX Facility comes just weeks after Council officially opened

‘Tis the season to be jolly and Council is calling on the community to celebrate together with two exciting Christmas extravaganzas coming up.

The celebrations will kick-off with Camden Christmas Festival on Saturday 26 November, 4-9pm, to be held along Argyle Street in Camden. This event will include the annual lighting of the community Christmas tree, live music, market stalls, amusements and rides and a very special visit from Santa himself.

The festivities will continue with Oran Park Christmas Concert on Thursday 1 December, 5-9pm, at Oran Park Civic Centre on Central Avenue. This event will see the lighting of the Oran Park Christmas Tree as well as Christmas entertainment, markets and another visit from Saint Nick.

Mayor of Camden, Cr Therese Fedeli, said it would be special to celebrate Christmas together once again after a three-year hiatus.

“Christmas is such a fantastic time of year and the perfect way to spread joy to your loved ones,” Cr Fedeli said.

“Camden has plenty to celebrate, and there is no better way than along Argyle Street and at Oran Park Civic Centre with special visits from Santa himself.

“I’ll be lighting the Christmas trees at each event, and I am also excited to have the Mayoral Christmas Card Competition winner with me who will be announced at the Camden Christmas Festival.

“We have been unlucky to not host these events for the last few years, so I encourage everyone to come down to either of the events for some fun as we get into the Christmas spirit.”

Both events are free.

Oran Park Local Wins Gold at Sydney Royal Fine Food Show

After a month of judging, across seven individual competitions, the Royal Agricultural Society of NSW (RAS) have announced the Champion medal products of the 2022 Sydney Royal Fine Food Show, with results reflecting a rise in the quality and market demand of plant-based and gluten-free products.

Nydelig Kitchen of Oran Park won a gold and silver medal in the Fine Food –Specialty Foods Classes of the prestigious show.

The gold medal was won with their Artisan Amber Rice Vinegar with a score of 93.67, whilst the silver medal was won with their Firebrand Dark Chilli Relish, scoring 83.33.

“As a luxury grazing and hampers business, we have been experimenting with fine foods. We were shocked and excited to win. This has created exciting prospects for the future. Our Artisan Amber Rice Vinegar will be available from November” said Madeleine Woof of Nydelig Kitchen.

The Healthy Body Company, a widely respected and experienced group of physiotherapy practices across greater Sydney are now open in Mount Annan Central Shopping Centre. The new facility has been purpose built and includes a fully equipped rehab gym onsite. The team working in the new clinic are local residents, who are very happy to be working close to home in the community they love.

The Healthy Body Company, an award winning small business, has built a reputation based on strong investment in staff training and development and a deep desire to provide services that create long term value and exemplary patient care. The team has a collaborative approach to managing all injuries and want to create long-term relationships with their patients and put roots down in the community.

Tom Hamilton, Principal Physiotherapist and Kaelin Moodley, Physiotherapist are both experienced physios who have been working in The Healthy Body Company Penrith clinic.

“Working in the community that I am deeply connected to, am raising my family in, and have lived in my whole life is just fantastic. The short commute and the great new clinic are a massive personal win for me”, Tom recently told us.

The team at The Healthy Body Company are committed to the local community and, as part of NSW Small Business Month in November, they will be hosting a Business Breakfast event where local speakers will talk about the value of collaboration for small business.

The Healthy Body Company Mount Annan is located at Mount Annan Central Shopping Centre, Shop 2, 1 Raintree Way, Mount Annan NSW 2567. Their phone number is (02) 4622 8111.

In line with growing consumer trends, a plant-based section was added to the Specialty Foods competition in 2021. In just its second year, the category has claimed its first champion medal thanks to a standout performer in the ‘Shroomi Burger’, an invention by Alexandria’s ‘Made by Kade’.

The mushroom-based, vegan, and gluten-free burger was not only the highest scorer in the plant-based category but was also crowned ‘Champion Other Specialty Product’, a title which excludes only preserves, vinegars and coffee.

Sydney Royal Fine Food Show Committee Chair, Lachlan Bowtell, believes the plant-based market provides a massive opportunity.

“Some would say that the plant-based products on our supermarket shelves are a fad, I firmly believe it’s a trend and one that the Australian Ag Sector cannot ignore”, Lachlan Bowtell said.

“We import most of the ingredients for these products and we need to develop this sector as an Australian Ag Sector opportunity. That’s why, for the Sydney Royal Fine Food Show, we require products to have 85% Australian content.”

“The standard was very high, across all competitions, and our judges were very pleased with the exhibits. It’s great to see so many companies submit their products for evaluation. The Sydney Royal Fine Food Show provides invaluable feedback for exhibitors, by the best judges in the country, which will continue to drive product quality going forward”, Lachlan Bowtell said.

2023

The NSW Government's commitment to deliver a new primary school in Gregory Hills is a step closer with approval of the Development Application for the temporary school, supporting the operation of the school from Day 1, Term 1 2023.

The news comes with confirmation that the school will be known as Gregory Hills Public School and appointment of its inaugural principal, Mrs Alison Rourke.

Member for Camden Peter Sidgreaves MP shared this exciting news at an open day with prospective parents at Gledswood Hills Public School.

"I am incredibly pleased to see our commitment to have the school up and running in 2023 is on track and that families in Gregory Hills will soon have access to their very own primary school," Mr Sidgreaves said.

"Since my election as the Member for Camden, I have continually advocated for delivery of this project to the Minister on behalf of our community and I am proud to deliver on this for local families."

The addition of Mrs Rourke brings a wealth of experience to lead the new school as a former principal of Buxton Public School and Fairy Meadow Demonstration School which was named Primary School of the Year in 2020.

Minister for Education and Early Learning Sarah Mitchell said she looked forward to seeing families walk through the gates in 2023.

"It is so pleasing to see this project come together and I want to thank the community for their ongoing support as we deliver the new primary school," Ms Mitchell said.

"As a Government, we have invested significantly in new and upgraded school infrastructure for the growing South West Sydney region and I am incredibly proud to see the new Gregory Hills Public School take shape."

A development application (DA} for the temporary school has been approved and site establishment works will start shortly. Work on the permanent facilities is progressing with development of the State Significant Development application.

Community members living within the intake area can enrol their children in the new school by visiting edu.nsw.link/ GHPSenrolment

The NSW Government is investing $8.6 billion in school infrastructure over the next four years, continuing its program to deliver 160 new and upgraded schools to support communities across NSW. This builds on the more than $9.1 billion invested in projects delivered since 2017, a program of $17.7 billion in public education infrastructure.

How to Support a Very, Very Upset Child

There are few more demanding parenting moments than dealing with a crying, red-faced, screaming child, especially in public spaces and other places where you have an audience. Here are my top tips for managing the notorious meltdown:

1. Prioritise safety. Wherever possible, remove objects, other children, or people from the surrounding space, instead of grabbing, holding down, or dragging your child. Of course, there will be situations where you must physically restrain or remove your child. If so, take your child to a safe, quiet, and empty space.

2. Once everyone is safe, PAUSE. Take one long and slow breath and then, exhale all air from your lungs. This will reduce your emotional flooding. If you’re not calm, your child has absolutely no chance of calming down.

3. Remind yourself, “my child is struggling”. The way you view your child influences what you do next. Thoughts such as, “she’s doing this on purpose” or “he’s so spoiled” increases anger and reduces your capacity bring your best self to this challenge.

4. If your child is still doing something unsafe such as hitting or kicking, you can hold a limit with love. Repeat one simple phrase in a firm but calm tone, e.g., “you can be angry, but you can’t hit me.”

5. This is not a teaching moment. Many parents ask me how to teach children to manage their feelings during emotional flooding, but you cannot teach someone to swim while they are drowning. Extremely upset children need help, not lessons.

6. Consider whether your child has any unmet physical needs such as hunger, toileting, tiredness, thirst, illness, or pain and attend to this as best you can.

7. Look beneath the surface issue. Meltdowns often occur after a parent sets a reasonable boundary, e.g., no more sweets or finishing a fun activity on time. What children ask for is often different from what they need. Your child might simply need help managing what they feel in response to your “no”. Acknowledge this with a simple reflection, “you’re sad we’re leaving the park.”

Yoga for Parents and their Bubs

Parent and Bub yoga classes are now available weekly in Oran Park, after beginning last month.

The classes, which commenced on 10th October, are held at Julia Reserve Community Centre in Oran Park. This is a collaboration between CORE Kids and Camden Council. The classes have been supported by Camden Council.

“Due to such a huge response, we've put on a second class. The first class filled up quite quickly on Monday mornings and as a result, we have been able to offer a second class commencing Monday 7th November from 12:00pm to 12:45pm. It's $60 for a 6 week term that has been kindly subsidised by Camden Council” explained Nicole Mulholland, Owner, and Founder of CORE Kids Health & Education.

A Parents and Bubs yoga class is 45 minutes of gentle stretching, breathing, craft and connection activities centred around taking some time to take space, bond with your baby and meet other local parents.

“It's all inclusive, everyone is welcome, anything goes and lots of prams! If parents just want to come and rest on the mat for 45 minutes too, they're so welcome to do this” she said.

Nicole believes that it’s important to have classes like this in the local community, “Parenthood can be quite isolating, so giving parents a safe space to meet and practice some self-care, develop connections with their babies and their community is so important for positive mental health”.

She enjoys co-ordinating the classes and seeing the positive impact it has already on parents and their bubs.

“I enjoy seeing the beautiful connections grow between parents and their children and the friendships that blossom” Nicole ended.

To learn more about the Parent and Bub Yoga classes, find CORE Kids on Facebook or Instagram (@corekidsau) or online at www.corekids.com.au.

Westpac Lifesaver Rescue Helicopter Drops in on Oran Park Public School

Westpac recently encouraged the community to show their support for the Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter by celebrating Rescue Helicopter Week and the outstanding work performed year round by the Service and crew.

Students from Oran Park Public School joined the celebrations and were treated with a visit from the Westpac Rescue Helicopter, with an opportunity to meet the crew that patrols New South Wales’ skies and learn about keeping safe in the lead up to Summer.

Operated by Surf Life Saving Australia, from two bases out of La Perouse in Sydney and Moruya airport on the South Coast, the Service plays a vital role in the state as a free 24/7 community service providing important support through search and rescue missions, aerial surveillance, and beach and coastal patrols - with no one ever having to pay to be rescued. Last year, the Service flew over 300 hours and as many missions.

Throughout Rescue Helicopter Week, staff at Westpac branches across News South Wales donned their summer ‘brights’ to celebrate and recognise the outstanding work performed through this partnership by the helicopter crew.

Natalie Berro, Acting Westpac Regional General Manager for south west Sydney, said it’s so important to recognise and celebrate the Service and crew, who dedicate their lives to helping keep the community safe.

“We’ve proudly supported the Service in New South Wales for 49 years, encouraging the community to commemorate this partnership and celebrate Rescue Helicopter Week with us.

“As we approach the summer months, we know lots of students will be out and about exploring our great state’s bushland, coastline, and waterways, so it’s also timely to remind our young people about keeping safe.

“Students from Oran Park Public School were treated with a visit from the Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter and got the chance to hear first-hand from the crew who dedicate their lives to helping the community, as well as learning important safety tips so they’re better prepared if faced with an emergency.

“The session was great fun and offered an interactive experience where students were able to watch the helicopter fly in and land at their school, along with the chance to ask the crew and pilot questions about flying, rescues and patrols,” said Natalie.

Students also got a close-up view of the Service’s state-of-the-art lifesaving equipment that’s designed to help the crew in emergency situations, including the helicopter’s radio and navigation equipment.

Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter crew member Clay Allison admits it’s very rewarding to work in a role to help keep the community safe.

“It’s great to be able to help teach primary school children about how to stay safe when venturing outdoors, what to do during an emergency and the important role of the Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter and emergency services within the community,” Clay said.

Skate Comp Series Comes to Oran Park

Skateboarding, scooter, and BMX enthusiasts in Oran Park have had the chance to learn the sport and show off their skills, thanks to Camden Council and Totem Skateboarding.

The Oran Park Skatepark Julia Reserve Skate Comp Series was a free event, taking place on Wednesday 28th September, with coaches on hand to assist and inspire the next generation. The fun and inclusive jams help build skills and confidence that lead to a bigger comp in April 2023.

The event was welcomed by the local community, with many getting the chance to take part in their first skateboarding, scooter, and BMX clinic.

“The Oran Park Skatepark Julia Reserve Skate Comp Series is a chance for participants to have extra support to focus on their own progression. This gives them the experience of a comp setting with loads of prize giveaways to be won” explained Candice Cameron, Project and Communications Manager of Totem Skateboarding.

“The sessions help to boost their confidence and become familiar with and keep the momentum going to move to the next level of competing in bigger jams and comps. All while highlighting and appreciating the time, energy, and effort they have put into getting good at skating” she continued.

The next events will take place at Oran Park during the Christmas/New Year school holidays next Year. Returning on Tuesday 17th January 2023 will be a Learn to Skate Workshop for beginners and intermediate skaters. Then, on Wednesday 18th January 2023 will be a Skate Comp Series and Jam.

For more information including upcoming events, visit www.totemskateboarding.com or find them on Facebook.

Club in particular.

Probus Clubs are a great way to meet new people and form friendships with other retirees. The Probus mantra is ‘Fun, Fellowship and Friendship’, so come along to a meeting and participate in an activity to see if what we offer will suit you. If you have a passion for an activity which we don’t have, perhaps you would like to start up a group after joining. Have a chat with anyone on the Management Committee, we are always looking for new ideas. Current activities include coffee and chat mornings, pub lunches, fine dining, walking, movie and craft groups, barefoot bowling, trivia, and family history.

In November, some of our Club members will be going on an Observation Car Rally and in December, a guided tour of the HARS Aviation Museum at the Shellharbour Regional Airport. Those members who are not so active can still enjoy ‘catching up’ with friends at the monthly meetings, enjoy listening to an interesting speaker and join other Club members for a social lunch after the meeting. At the October meeting, members learned some interesting facts from one of our Club members, a Titanic historian, in his role as Captain Smith. Members were able to view some of his personal collection of Titanic models and artefacts.

"Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me" (Matthew 25:40, 45, NIV)

I’m sure we’re all familiar with the phrase “It’s none of my business”. It’s a phrase that, as we all know, can mean a variety of things. On the one hand, “It’s none of my business” can be an acknowledgment that we must respect the right of others to selfdetermination and personal privacy. On the other hand, “It’s none of my business” can be used as an excuse for not stepping in to help when another person needs our assistance. Sadly, I think it would be fair to say that the phrase “It’s none of my business” has almost become a motto for our society that wants to convince us that its OK to be totally absorbed in our own life projects and ignore the needs of others.

However, if you and I are to be ‘good citizens’, we need to become in a sense ‘counter-cultural’ and not be afraid to reach out to others.

As the Australian Catholic Bishops remind us in one of their Social Justice messages more than ever, all of us (and in particular those who profess to be followers of Jesus) are called to hear the cries of others, especially those people in our society so often pushes to the fringes.

Clearly as I have already said, this task is a difficult one, however let us pray that we will not become complacent in our faith and in our outreach to others. For the fact of the matter is, whether we like it or not, the wellbeing of each other will always be our business.

As we dot our i’s and cross our t’s in the final stages of compiling the November edition, I catch a glance outside the office window the weather is bleak at best.

We’ve had a week of rain, threatening grey skies and blustery days. Not quite the start to Spring any of us were hoping for. The grass is mushy, the weeds are stubborn and for every ‘sunny’ day we have, it seems 3 rainy days follow.

Here’s hoping November has better to offer!

What we do know, is that there are plenty of fantastic events and activities taking place in and around the community, which will get us up, out and about! We’ve written about a few, take a read or better still take part.

On the Eleventh day of the Eleventh month at the Eleventh hour, we pause to honour our fallen heroes. Please take a moment, to do just that. Lest We Forget.

Enjoy your community news! There is no greater wealth in this world than peace of mind.
