Sydney Drafting Concepts & Design, based at Oran Park in NSW, has taken top gong in the Architect category of the 2024 Australian Trades Small Business Champion
Awards – a major recognition awards program dedicated
to spotlighting outstanding trades-based small business operators.
Announced winner of the prestigious accolade at the Awards’ glittering National Presentation Evening Gala held at Sydney’s The Star on Friday 23 August 2024, Founder and Director of the business, Byron Clima, received a customised trophy, certificate and invaluable kudos as a nationally recognised industry leader.
The ‘Logies of Australia’s trade sector’, the red-carpet event was hosted by Nine News’ Peter Overton and attended by more than 1,000 small businesspeople.
This year marks the second consecutive year of the Australian Trades Small Business Champion Awards, created to celebrate and inspire the most innovative, dynamic, and top-performing tradies spanning all capital cities as well as rural, regional and suburban towns.
Free to enter, the Awards attracted entrants across more than 50 trade categories in retail, services and manufacturing industries.
Sydney Drafting Concepts & Design scored the highest result in the Architect category, comprehensively judged by an independent expert panel that considered various aspects of small business operations – including each entrant’s strategies, growth plans, financial performance, eco-friendliness, innovation, customer service quality and community support – to name but some of the judging criteria.
“Being selected as a Champion of this major event from a nationwide entrant pool speaks volumes of the tenacity and leadership at Sydney Drafting Concepts & Design,” said Steve Loe, Awards Founder and Managing Director of Precedent Productions, which coordinates the Australian Trades Small Business Champion Awards.
“Especially relevant this year as we continue to navigate through unprecedented challenges and transformative opportunities for so many tradies, this program pertinently pays tribute to the vital role of small businesses in the trade sector as the backbone of the nation’s construction industry, and a significant contributor to Australia’s overall social and economic prosperity.
“The majority of Australian small business owners are tradesbased, and they provide employment to millions. A career in trades typically means early starts, long days, and exhausting labour; and for owners, this is in addition to all the pressures that come with running a small business. It can be a taxing career and those who perform to a high standard – including Sydney Drafting Concepts & Design – deserve to be acknowledged,” added Mr Loe.
The 2024 Australian Trades Small Business Champion Awards is sponsored by Boa, NOVA Employment, Xcllusive Business Sales, VJB Group, Lifestyle Tradie, Castaway Forecasting and Big Clean.

Last month marked a remarkable milestone for one of the local RFS community’s longest serving members, as they celebrated 30 years of dedicated service with Catherine Field Rural Fire Brigade. For three decades, Andrew Macdonald has exemplified courage, commitment, and an unwavering spirit in supporting and protecting not only our own community, but communities all over the country and even to those overseas.
From tackling intense fires to flooding rains and supporting our local families during emergencies, Andrew’s contributions have made a lasting impact on so many lives.
“We are incredibly grateful for his tireless efforts and immense dedication and are very proud to call Andrew a Catherine Field member” said Catherine Field Rural Fire Brigade.
Over the years, Andrew has not only demonstrated remarkable knowledge, skill and leadership, but has also inspired countless others with his dedication. The impact Andrew has made on their brigade is immeasurable, and they are truly grateful to have the privilege of serving alongside him.
“Andrew is more than just a volunteer, he is a mentor to everyone within our brigade as well a senior leader across our district and the service” said Troy Fisher, President of Catherine Field Rural Fire Brigade.
“Thank you for being a pillar of strength within our brigade and an exemplary role model.
“Join us in congratulating Andrew Macdonald on this extraordinary achievement and thanking him for his years of exemplary service. Here’s to 30 years of dedication and service with many more to come!”

After fighting alongside our community, I’m pleased to announce that Cobbitty will undergo a speed limit change from Wednesday 28 August 2024.
Since Cobbitty bridge was reopened, the area has been experiencing high levels of traffic, particularly with heavy vehicles, which are being driven near local schools and family homes.
With your support we have been able to ensure that a section of the current 60km/h area from 100 Cobbitty Road to 400 Cobbitty Road will be reduced to 50km/h, as will a section of the current 80km/h from
496 Cobbitty Road to the Northern Road will be reduced to 60km/h.
Since being elected as Member for Camden, Cobbitty residents have constantly brought this issue to my attention, eager to fix this area 12 year of Liberal National Government neglect.
With two fatalities caused by heavy vehicles in 2023, this change is imperative.
As a member of the Minns Labor Government, I’m focused on what matters: improving community safety.
Speed limit reductions are the first step in working to keep our neighbourhoods safe.
Brief roadworks will be undergone to change existing road markings and speed limit signs.
This work will occur in two dayshifts and two nightshifts between Wednesday 28th of August and Friday 13th of September, with day working hours operating between 7am-6pm, and night 8pm-5am.
I’m very proud to be announcing this change, but even more proud of our Cobbitty area. Thank you for your support in delivering this change.
Hundreds of kids and their families were treated to an oink-tastic Peppa Pig live show at the annual Kids Fun Day event hosted by Camden Council.
The lovable and slightly bossy Peppa Pig performed together with her family, Mummy Pig, Daddy Pig and little brother George, taking kids on a muddy adventure live on stage.
Peppa Pig and her family performed a cheerful show, played games and danced to songs together will the cheery crowd. Kids’ imaginations soared as Peppa Pig encouraged everyone to jump into their very own imaginary muddy puddles.
Camden Council’s General Manager, Andrew Carfield said each year Kids Fun Day draws hundreds of younger kids and their families, and this year the free event was a celebration of joy featuring the very popular kids’ cartoon characters from Peppa Pig.
“I am so pleased that Council was able to once again deliver a much-loved community event for the whole family to enjoy,” he said.
“The event was very popular, with bookings to the free concert booking out within the first couple of hours.”
Families were also treated to free face painting and a free barbecue. There was also a sensory play space by Mess It Up, engaging kids with a soft play area and variety of sensory activities and toys.

Did you know that three million Australians are living with anxiety? Anxiety is the most common mental health condition in Australia with three million Australians affected and 1 in 4 people experiencing anxiety at some stage in their life.
Anxiety occurs when the fight or flight system is activated in response to a perceived threat, causing bodily responses such as rapid heartbeat, increased breathing rate, sweating and a reallocation of attentional resources. This promotes survival of a person under threat. These symptoms help us to run away from or fight stressors that endanger us. Furthermore, a certain level of stress (eustress) can provide the optimum level of arousal that helps us to perform tasks.
The fight or flight system is critical to our survival, however, if activated continuously over minor situations that do not actually compromise our safety, it can rob us of our time, energy and concentration. It can impair our ability to focus and complete tasks, connect with our loved ones, and lead us to act in an aggressive manner, as well as feeling exhaustion and burnout.
Seeking professional psychological treatment with someone who provides evidenced based treatments can lead to better management of the symptoms and/or cessation of symptoms.
Behaviour Changer - How to seek help.
• Ask yourself how often you feel keyed-up, physical symptoms of anxiety including rapid heartbeat and breathing, sweating, feelings of panic, agitation or nervousness or gut related symptoms such as diarrhoea.
• Notice whether you worry excessively causing distress or impairing executive function such as memory, concentration, or impacting sleep.
• See your GP to discuss your symptoms, Mental Health Care Plan to attend a treating psychologist would be suitable.

Toni Salter, affectionately known as The Veggie Lady, is on a mission to get more people growing, gardening, and loving their green spaces! As a horticulturist, writer, and familiar voice on talk-back radio, Toni shares her passion through hands-on workshops, gardening advice, and fun presentations that inspire everyone from beginners to seasoned green thumbs to dig in and get planting.
Toni’s journey began years ago when she was a young mum, running a co-op that provided organic veggies to her mother’s group. “I became known as The Veggie Lady when I was a young mum supplying a weekly box of organic veggies,” Toni explained. “One of the ladies didn’t know my name, so she just called me The Veggie Lady. The name stuck.” After completing a horticulture course and teaching home gardeners how to grow their own organic veggies, Toni officially launched her business under the now-familiar name.
Today, The Veggie Lady offers a range of services, including community workshops through local councils around Sydney, teaching people how to grow herbs and vegetables, sustainable gardening techniques, and better waste management practices. She also presents at libraries on topics such as sensory gardens for better mental health, container gardening for balconies, and gardening for seniors. “I get a lot of joy out of growing productive plants and flowers that bring in pollinators like bees,” says Toni. “It’s incredibly satisfying when workshop participants tell me they’ve been able to grow their own because of what they’ve learned from me.”
For Toni, gardening is not just about growing food; it’s about nurturing the soul. “I also value the calming effect that gardening can have on us, and I love hearing from people who experience the same stress relief from practising mindfulness in their garden,” she said.
As Spring arrives, Toni has some tips for those looking to start their own veggie gardens: “Start small but have a plan for future expansion. Creating a garden that’s too big can be overwhelming,” she advised. “Make sure you have enough sun—veggies need six hours of sunlight ideally—and focus on your soil by adding compost, worm castings, and natural fertilisers.”
For more tips, free planting guides, and information on workshops, visit Toni’s website at www.theveggielady.com. Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or just starting out, The Veggie Lady’s passion and expertise will help you grow a bountiful garden and find peace among the plants.

Various activities and events will highlight and promote Probus Clubs within local communities as we celebrate Probus Month across October.
If you have not heard of Probus, there are at least 10 Clubs within the Macarthur region. Membership is open to retired or semi-retired people who find they have more time on their hands and want to make new friendships. Probus Clubs are social Clubs that promote fun and friendship - no fundraising involved. All Clubs have regular meetings. The day-to-day management of a Club relies on a committee of elected volunteers. Activities and events on offer vary from Club to Club. At Oran Park Probus Club we enjoy regular ‘Coffee and Chat’, pub lunches and specialty dining. Members may join the walking, trivia or craft groups, attend movies and the theatre, and join us on our day trips or longer tours.
As our craft group has so far only attracted women, an alternative, the ‘Boyz Group’ provides an opportunity for men in the club to get together to discuss whatever they wish to. As with Men’s Sheds, we hope this might encourage more men to join Probus and benefit from staying connected with others. Loneliness and isolation in older people have recognised detrimental effects on their physical and mental health.
Our recent outing to Fairground Follies in Bowral took many of us on a trip down ‘memory lane’ as we visited the fairground carousel – 30 hand carved timber horses and cockerels, originally steam powered, with music from a Gavioli organ. Our tour guide gave us a demonstration of the Wurlitzer photo player, once used to accompany silent films. This could be played by hand or by using music rolls and accompanied by a selection of percussion instruments. Amongst the many organs and instruments, the Taj Mahal, a Mortier organ which once stood in Mortier’s hometown of Antwerp, Belgium, was magnificent with its light display activated by cardboard music. This tour was followed by a delicious pub lunch. What more could you ask for?
Visitors are always welcome to attend a monthly Meeting of Oran Park Probus Club. These are held at Wests Lakeside Golf Club, 50 Raby Road, Gledswood Hills, on the first Tuesday of the month except November, which falls on Melbourne Cup Day. This year the Meeting will be on November 7th. Meetings commence at 10.00am. Each meeting opens with a Guest Speaker. Topics are varied so there is something to suit everyone. If you would like more information about Oran Park Probus Club, please contact the Club Secretary, email: secretary. oranparkprobusclub@gmail.com
Gregory Hills Netball Club have capped off an amazing 2024 season on the court in the Campbelltown District Netball Association competition.
The local club had 7 teams registered this year. This consisted of their Net Set Go team, Under 11’s, Under 13’s, Under 15’s, Grad B, Grad C and Division 9 Ladies team.
Despite the club’s size, they remarkably had 4 out of their 6 competition teams progress through to the Grand Final. Their Grad B’s came home with a win, undefeated all season. Unfortunately, their Under 15’s lost by 1 goal and the Division 9 Ladies by 5 goals. Their Grad C’s fought hard, playing with injury and no subs, but couldn’t come home with a win.
“We are super proud of our achievements having 4 grand finalist teams is amazing and testament to the hard work and commitment from our coaches and the players” said Naomi McNeill, Secretary of Gregory Hills Netball Club to the Oran Park Gazette.
They had many highlights this season, both on and off the court.
“The highlights from our season are certainly our grand
finalists, but also just seeing the growth in player skill and the wonderful sportsmanship our players displayed. And I must mention the camaraderie of the club at our two recent Bunnings BBQ fundraisers” she explained.
With the season now over, attention shifts towards their Junior Presentation Day, which will take place on Saturday 2nd November at Aquatopia, whilst their Senior Presentation Dinner will be on Friday 29th November.
“We would like to thank all our players, coaches, managers and umpires for a successful season. A big thank you to the mum and dad taxis to training and games, the families and spectators that have supported our girls from the sideline braving the cold and wet days and for the support during fundraising events” acknowledged Naomi.
They are hoping for growth next year and are looking for local businesses who would like to discuss sponsorship for their 2025 season. If you would like to support your local community and want to know more, you can contact the club via email at ghnc1@outlook.com.
“Our 2025 registration dates will be released at the end of 2024. Keep an eye on our socials for these dates or contact the club” she ended.

After what seems to have been a very long and, on occasion, extremely cold and wet Winter, we’re finally seeing the sun with gorgeous Spring weather, and salad weather is upon us. It’s time to wheel the barbecue from the shed and fire it up at last – and what heralds the oncoming Summer more than the delicious aroma of someone in the neighbourhood barbecuing a few snags?
This past month, we’ve seen so many community groups celebrating various milestones and events, with many more to follow in the coming month, as our District Gazette community works hard to compile each edition, making sure it’s packed with what’s happening right here in your local community.
