Dad! A Son's First Hero, A Daughter's First Love September is the month we celebrate Father’s Day, a day we get to show our appreciation for Fathers and Father figures present in our lives. Sourced from timeanddate.com, the idea of a special day to honour Fathers and celebrate Fatherhood was introduced from the United States. A woman called Sonora Smart Dodd was inspired by the American Mother's Day celebrations and planned a day to honour Fathers early in the 20th century. The first Father's Day was celebrated in Spokane, Washington on June 19, 1910. Father’s Day has become increasingly popular throughout Australia and other parts of the world over the years. While many Fathers have enjoyed their special day for years, there are many local residents who are celebrating their very first Father’s Day, like Oran Park resident Nick Racca who welcomed his baby boy Romeo with his wife in December. When we asked Nick what he loved most about being a Dad he responded with “definitely seeing Romeo’s face light up when I walk in the door, any troubles I may have had are gone and nothing else matters” Nicks one tip to all new Fathers and Fathers to be, is to keep in mind kids grow so quick and with a blink of an eye they have learnt something new for the first time, every day demands these days could mean you may miss out. Spend as much time with them as you can or you will miss the best parts. Nick is looking forward to spending his first Father’s Day with his beautiful family and although as long as he is with them he will be a happy Dad, he is also hopeful for breakfast in bed. Father’s Day can also be a reminder of those we have lost and are no longer around to Image Supplied | Nick & Romeo

Never Give Up! Oran Park resident Sean Keppie has played Rugby League for the Narellan Jets J.R.F.C since the age of 4 and when you asked him back then what he wanted to do when he grew up, he would say “Play footy”. Speak with Sean today and his goals haven’t changed. Now, he is more committed and determined than ever. The journey so far has had its ups and downs. Missing out on the NSWCHS Rugby League Team in 2015 saw Sean adjust his approach to training and set his sights on claiming a position in the 2016 side by believing in himself. In recent months, Sean not only represented NSWCHS at the National Championships, he went one step further and was selected in the 2016 Australian Secondary Schools 18 Years Rugby League Team. Speaking with Sean after his selection he stated, “I am overwhelmed at this opportunity and I feel very lucky to play for Australia. I can’t believe I made it.” Once selected the boys went home for a week before going into a two week camp on the Gold Coast and Wollongong in preparation for the two Test Matches to be played against The English Academy side. The first Test was played in Redcliffe, Queensland which the Aussies won 50-26. The second Test was played at Cronulla, which the Aussies also won 50-12. We asked Sean what he thought of the experience and he said, “It was an awesome experience playing in the #13 Australian Jersey. I made some great friends and the coaches were great.” He said, “Kids should never let go of their dreams. Keep striving and never give up.” Sean will now continue training with the Parramatta NYC squad with hopes of making his NRL debut in the near future.

FAITH – NEWLIFE ANGLICAN ORAN PARK

MAUREEN THORPE

Article Written + Submitted by: Lead Pastor Stuart Starr @ New Life Anglican Church W: newlifeanglican.org.au E: stuart@newlifeanglican.org.au A: Cnr Central Avenue + Marcus Loane Way, Oran Park

Faster, Stronger, Higher In the post Olympic period it’s interesting to stop and consider what sort of lasting impact they really have. Is there a divot in your TV couch where you sat for three weeks? Gone? I thought so. What about the real stuff, the Australians who won Gold medals? How many of them can you name now? What about those who won Bronze and came third in the world at their discipline? It’s pretty hard isn’t it. These men and women were right up their at being faster, stronger, and going higher and yet their names are already fading. What about you and I? I must confess that with my 40th birthday now in the rearview mirror it is time to face up to the fact that I’ll never run in an Olympic 100m final. No amount of training will overcome the basic fact that my body just isn’t equipped to work at that level. One might well ask what we can do that will be of lasting value? What will truly remain? If fame is your goal it’s a moving target and you’re guaranteed of failure, but there is something that will last, something of eternal consequence. It’s character. When one of the founders of the early Church writes to Ephesus in Turkey he urges these ancient Christians to live a life “worthy of their calling”. There are four things that we are told God will delight in us cultivating. He writes, “Be completely humble, and gentle, be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.” That’s not a bad start is it? Humility is the art of thinking less of yourself and more of others. Gentleness is choosing not to leverage strength when kindness can triumph. Patience is long-suffering whilst what we hope for is still coming, and unity is joining God’s work bringing His people together. If you long for something lasting like me then let’s choose something that won’t win any medals but just might be remembered long after we’re gone. Stuart – New life Anglican Church

to celebrate with. For our household the day is bittersweet, although I’m grateful for the most amazing husband who is an extraordinary Father to our son, I’m also reminded that my Dad and hero is no longer around for me to show my appreciation. So remember to make the most of these special days, give Dad a big hug, take him somewhere special, fill him up with his favourite food and drink, spend time laughing and above all tell him how much you love him, not just on Father’s Day, but every day. To all you Dad’s out there, Biological, Step, Grandfather, Father role models, Father’s to be and those Fathers who are no longer with us, Happy Father’s Day for Sunday 4th September. We wish you the most wonderful day and appreciate all that you do.

Cows Create Careers

Macarthur Astronomical Society

Driving along Oran Park drive today is a very different feeling then what it was only a few years back. That feeling of country life with the cows in the paddock and the feeling you are miles away from the city is a distant memory now due to the continual expansion of our developing town, which is why it’s great to hear when local schools contribute to teaching our children about the heritage of our area and what it means in today’s society. Last month, Oran Park Anglican College Agriculture students engaged in the ‘Cows Create Careers’ Farm module in partnership with Leppington Pastoral Company. The Perich family were the former owner and current developers of the land that the College and Oran Park Town estate is on. Student’s hand-raised two calves over three weeks, until they were weaned off milk. They learnt about the nutritional needs of cows in order for them to develop. During this time, students were responsible for safely mixing calf formula and dedicating themselves to their care under the guidance of College staff. Junior School students were also able to engage in this program by watching the cows being fed and cared for by the Year 9 Agriculture students. This provided the junior students the opportunity to work alongside the senior students further building the great Community that exists amongst the College. The College is grateful for the opportunity that it has been given to provide hands-on learning to their students and are particularly grateful to the Perich family for providing these calves. Image | Students of OPAC Learning about their pastoral heritage | Oran Park Anglican College

The Macarthur Astronomical Society Inc (MAS) was established in January 1996 and are celebrating their 20th birthday this year. Currently they have over 110 members. As amateur astronomers, most based in the area, their mission is to foster the science of astronomy within their own membership and in the local community. Being a not for profit organisation they rely on membership fees, donations and their own fund raising activities to provide most of their services free of charge. MAS conducts a free monthly public meeting, the Macarthur Astronomy Forum, where they have top astronomers from around the world highlighting their research. Held at Western Sydney University (Campbelltown Campus) on the third Monday of each month – 7.30pm10.00pm. Members can enjoy astronomy observing sessions and telescope workshops, at The Oaks and at Belanglo Forest every month. They usually spend New Moon weekends at the Forest when the sky is darkest and fantastic views of the Milky Way can be observed. Great for photography! MAS hosts community outreach events, including public viewing nights and lectures. 10 September will see the finale of their 5-month Winter program at the Campbelltown Rotary Observatory, WSU, free of charge. MAS is happy to provide speakers for schools and community groups, both during the day and at nights. They organise Astro-tours for their members to inspect telescope facilities in Australia and overseas and are looking to tour Western Australia during 2017! FAITH – ST MARY MACKILLOP CATHOLIC PARISH ORAN PARK

Some people have heard of a Mission, but this event is one that you just have to experience. Experience the power of God in real and relevant way through scripture, music and the arts. Expect to laugh, learn, reflect and be changed by this truly powerful Christian experience. No matter your age or background this event is for you. IT’S BACK After a few years break the Macarthur Lifestyle & Business Expo is back and the South West Networking Group is being supported by Campbelltown City Council and West Leagues Club to bring this event to you.

Gardeners looking for inspiration for their own plots, or just wanting to experience the beauty of Spring in the Upper Blue Mountains, will again be flocking to the annual Leura Gardens Festival in October. The 2016 festival will have 13 magical gardens on show, including three new to the festival and several returning after a break. This year’s festival, the 52nd, will take place from Saturday, October 1 to Sunday, October 9, and will have several features which should make it even more appealing than usual. Firstly, although the main festival features three more gardens than last year, the price remains the same at $25 per person for an all-gardens ticket or $5 per person per individual garden. Secondly, the special pre-festival tours, for groups of 10+ people, will provide a private, escorted tour of four very special gardens, some of which will only be open in this pre-festival week, all for the cost of only $20 per person. These tours will be available in the week prior to the main festival, from Monday, September 26 to Friday, September 30. Thirdly, holders of the $25 all-gardens ticket will have unlimited access to the Music in the Gardens performances held every afternoon. Several new acts will be appearing as well favourites such as the Penrith City Big Band, and the Blue Mountains Ukelele Group. Visitors can also take home a permanent memento of the festival from the plant sales centre which will this year feature plants from four new participating nurseries, providing a much wider range of both native and exotic species. The centre will also have on sale metal garden art and an interesting range of garden tools. Festival proceeds go to the Blue Mountains District Anzac Memorial Hospital. More details of this not-to-be missed event for garden lovers are available at www.leuragardensfestival. com.au or on 0431 095 279.

We are relaunching the Macarthur Lifestyle & Business Expo back to its original successful style, with a back-to-basics low-cost format. Join us for an afternoon to exhibit your business with other business owners, followed by a short cocktail and networking function.

Home Security Tips

When living in new suburbs, it’s always a worry to hear that your neighbour has been broken into or that there was that strange person lurking around your garden whilst you were out. Although crime and break-ins will always occur in every suburb old or new, there are ways to help prevent unfortunate things from occurring. According to the Australian Police website, most break-ins result from poor security or windows and doors left unlocked. I have to admit I have been guilty of this, particularly being in a new suburb thinking that with not many people living here, everything will be safe. This is not the case. You can never be too sure or too secure with your home and property. Here are a few tips to keep in mind: • Get to know your neighbours – you don’t have to be friends with them, just simply get to know them so in the event that something does occur out of the ordinary, you can detect when a problem occurs. • Keep your gardens maintained to avoid windows and doors being obscured and burglars being able to hide. • Solid doors should be used for entry doors. • Keep fuse boxes locked to avoid tampering with lights and alarms.

• Install sensor lights front and back. • Fit all entry doors and windows with correct key locks and don’t forget about your manhole. • Install an alarm system. New home builder Mr Webber is urging all residents and builders to take extra precautions with stock and belongings left on new home building sites as he was the unfortunate victim of a theft incident leaving him without his hot water system and other items. Once keys have been handed over, this then becomes your responsibility. Be sure to insure your property and keep everything secured if property is still vacant. Speaking with Senior Constable Greg Louden, Crime Prevention Officer/GLLO for the Camden local area also had some wise words regarding security, “Let’s keep what belongs to us - secure your home, lock your doors and windows, be aware of your surroundings, and keep a look out for suspicious persons and vehicles. Regarding building sites - Install CCTV cameras, install sensor lights, lock away expensive items, out of site out of mind” As Oran Park grows, we as a community need to do all we can to prevent such crimes and create a safe neighbourhood for our families; so if you see something, say something, report all incidents to the local police and alert our residents of strange behaviours. Stay connected through one of the many Facebook community pages, notice boards or community events held here in Oran Park.

Protecting Your Lifestyle In The Face Of Disaster Like many people, you probably work hard and enjoy the benefits of a comfortable lifestyle as a result. Have you ever considered what would happen if you were unable to work, or if your finances were adversely affected by an unforeseen disaster? Don’t let all your hard work go for nothing – take steps to protect your family’s future. Insurance is the best way to protect your lifestyle and help ensure that no matter what happens in the future, you and your family will still be able to enjoy the standard of living you are used to. In spite of the need for insurance, research undertaken by advocacy organisation Lifewise suggests that only 31% of Australians have income protection cover. Your income is the key to being able to maintain your lifestyle, and for a large number of us, if we were to lose our source of income either through unemployment or being unable to work due to illness or injury, our lifestyles would be seriously affected. Have you considered what would happen to your family if you were unable to earn an income? There are a number of different insurance options that can help you protect your financial future, including income protection and total and permanent disability insurance (TPD). Life insurance is also essential if you have anyone who depends on you financially. In the event of your death, having sufficient cover on your life insurance could mean that your family would be in a position to pay off any debts and maintain their standard of living after you were gone. You work hard so that your family can enjoy life. Make sure that lifestyle is protected into the future! For a free review of your existing insurance policies or to construct a comprehensive wealth protection plan, please feel free to contact us for an initial no obligation consultation.

Charity Wheels

It’s not every day you answer the phone to a room full of rowdy local residents screaming that you have won a car, but on a sunny July afternoon in Camden that is exactly what happened when local man Rashid Kahlouff answered his phone whilst out with his family. Christmas in July presented by Clintons Toyota came together for the 4th year in a row to support Disability Macarthur Family Support & Care and the wonderful work they do in our community. Alongside the luncheon, which is attended by local business owners and residents around Macarthur, a raffle was held to win a new Toyota Corolla. With only a 1 in 300 chance of winning, there was no stopping people from supporting such a great cause. When Mr Kahlouff was approached about purchasing a ticket his care was not on winning but simply helping out a charity in need. He was overwhelmed to find out he would be driving away in the car. We would like to congratulate him on such a humble and deserving win.

Disability Macarthur Family Support & Care provides quality care programs and respite care for families, adults and children in crises and or who have special needs arising out of physical or intellectual disabilities. Founders of Disability Macarthur Family Support & Care, friends Una Vidler & Kate Skansbakken, noticed many families with children struggling. In 1988 they founded ‘Macarthur District Temporary Family Care’ and began providing short ‘foster-care-like’ breaks (respite) for families experiencing crisis. Families caring for children with disabilities often miss out on the simple pleasures other families enjoy (and even take for granted). The idea of a sleep-over with friends, a trip to the movies, a night at the football or even a visit to the shops can be too much to organise. This can leave families feeling isolated. “Our whole philosophy is to give you the opportunity to be connected with your family and the community. This could take the form of respite, group activities and outings, workshops and counselling, support networks and special custom designed programs for your individual needsâ€? Disability Macarthur has served many families and currently runs 12 programs across 5 centres. Always looking for outside the box ideas to help fundraise and support these programs many of our local businesses and residents have jumped on board to sponsor events held in the community. Events are run throughout the year and advertised on their website and Facebook page. If you would like to help or assist by volunteering or sponsoring Disability Macarthur you can contact their office on 9603 7011 or at disabilitymacarthur.org.au ď ˛ď€ Car Winner, Rashid Kahlouff with MC Steve Wisbey, Clintons Toyota Staff and Disability Macarthur CEO Annamaria Wood | Image Source Sharon Robertson, Supplied by Disability Macarthur.

What is Heartworm, Exactly?

SAY IT OUT LOUD

Heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis) is a parasite which, as its name implies, lives in the hearts of dogs. Its larval stages are spread by mosquitos, where they migrate through tissues and into blood vessels, where they mature into adults. The worms may start to clog blood vessels, in particular the pulmonary veins which connect the lungs to the heart, as well as the right-hand side of the heart. Signs of heart failure may not be evident until advanced stages of infection, which can appear as coughing, exercise intolerance or collapse. It generally takes heartworms six months to fully develop and start reproducing young called “microfilariae”, which can be ingested by other mosquitos when they bite an affected dog, which continues their lifecycle and allowing other dogs to be infected. Treatment of heartworm infestation can be difficult, as killing off a large number of worms at once can block blood vessels, as well as triggering an allergic reaction which can be fatal. It is far easier and safer to be proactive and protect your dog from heartworm. There are many products available for protecting against heartworm, with most tablets or spot-on treatments having to be applied or given monthly. An alternative form of protection comes in the form of an injection called Proheart SR-12. This slow-release product will confer protection against heartworm infection for up to a year, based on your dog’s body weight. Regardless of the form of prevention being used, protection must be given consistently, as the drugs used for prevention can actually harm your dog if your dog is already infected with adult heartworms. For this reason, if your dog is overdue or has missed having heartworm prevention, a veterinarian may perform a heartworm antigen test before starting heartworm prevention. The small animal team at Uni Vets Camden are pleased to announce our heartworm awareness promotion during the month of September, where we are offering free heartworm antigen testing with the purchase of Proheart SR-12 injections. For further enquiries, feel free to contact us on 46550777.

Greetings Oran Park residents what better way to say Hello but to put it down on paper. My husband and I moved here in March from Liverpool. We had lived there for nearly fourty years and raised five children in the same house. We were out driving one day and saw the big sign ORAN PARK, my husband had been coming here to the races since he was seventeen. He saw the great legends roar down the straight and we knew where we wanted to move to. It all happened quick we saw a house at LJ Hooker made a offer we had sold and moved in all within three months. AT Liverpool constant speed racing sirens and ambos cars been set alight we knew we had chosen well. Neighbors seem to keep to themselves and the streets are kept so clean. We are so pleased with our choice. We often like to go to the top of the straight and look across at the beautiful view. I'm sure if your really quite we sometimes hear the words Drivers Start Your Engines. Thank You Oran Park H.Harold Your readers might be interested in this article http://dictionaryofsydney.org/entry/ oran_park I. Willis
