Hiya Butterflies! At the time of writing this, the first day back to school is right around the corner. I’m a little nervous, but hopefully everything will gradually go back to normal. Already I’m getting a sense of a welcoming environment as we had orientation events, so hopefully this will carry on to the next few months. As always, I advise everyone to look out for each other. Try to be aware of your surroundings and keep other people in mind when going out. Keep your masks on, do your best to stay safe!

Heyy division 42 west! I hope you’ve all enjoyed your summer and are getting ready to hit the books while serving your community with passion! How was your summer? Mine was a bit slow but I went to senior sunrise which made me think wow, this year is going to be one to remember! And just before we say goodbye to our summer days of waking up at noon or spending time at the beach with friends, it’s important to recognize what is heading in our future! Going back to school brings opportunities for in person meetings and being able to get together with other key clubbers to really serve together! Continue to take care of yourself mentally as we head into the new school year and always remember to take breaks and know when to have fun. Stay cool, D42W!

Buena is being recognized as club of the month for August! They have been bringing in amazing service hours and continue to remain a strong standing club. Their officers have been doing a great job of working together on submissions and are always more than willing to reach out when they need help. It serves them well having a president who is on our dlt and relays important information to them to make sure they’re performing to the best of their service abilities.

Key Club at Buena High School has continued service projects such as charity miles. Charity miles is an app that has allowed our key club members to gain community service hours by recording runs, walks, or bike rides. Recording these activities raises funds for charities by the amount of miles recorded. For example, a mile of walking or running is $0.25 and a mile of biking is $0.10. Whenever I go for a run I make sure to use charity miles so that funds can be raised for Unicef. And as someone who has been using charity miles since June of 2020, I can say that charity miles is an amazing service project because of how easy it is to access and raise funds.

This month two new service projects were presented to our members to participate in! For one of them our members were encouraged to create flyers on biking and walking. Members promoted biking and walking safety, describing their favorite place to bike and walk to by making digital flyers that will be posted on our Instagram. Whilst earning service hours. Apart from promoting biking and walking safety members were also able to participate in creating heartfelt, positive letters/cards for children at St. Jude's Children’s Research Hospital! For this service project, members wrote thoughtful letters that were given to children. Earning themselves service hours and helping make someone’s day.

In the past month we had one new service project along with the ongoing service projects; Pause For and Charity Miles. The new service projects that we did was Homemade Dog Toys. We had many members participate in this and was able to donate them! One of our members, Kimberly Ortega even crocheted dog toys. Our club was also able to attend the July DCM and Officer Training Conference. Through that we were able to learn more about our responsibilities as a Key Club officer and was able to meet other officers!

The July DCM at the Officers Training Conference (OTC) was another success for the butterflies as Eduardo Cintora was recognized for member of the month! Eduardo, an incoming junior from Pacifica High School, was recognized for his exceptional work on Charity Miles. With a total of 1,144 miles completed as of early-August, he is placed in the top 2 for Pacifica’s Charity Miles team. Way to be a good teammate! Due to the pandemic, in-person service events lessened, but luckily online volunteering helped the division immensely when getting hours remotely. With schools starting to open this year, hopefully we’ll get right back into in-person volunteering and see each other’s faces.

Santa Clara is still being active on Charity Miles with over 4,000 miles all together. Each member has around 300-400 miles! We also recruited more members since the start of the new school year and home many more are willing to join since this is our first year of an in person Key Club year.

Santa Paula has not held any meetings or events besides the participation in charity miles and free rice. But we did attend the July DCM and Officer Training Conference. A few of our officers attended and was able to learn more about their position and responsibilities! School starts soon for Santa Paula and we will be having a fundraiser soon. We will also as officers plan out more activities for the year as we begin to settle in.
