Augusta Savage's Gamin installation view, Willmott Gallery
The Dixon in 2014 I have been the Chairman of the Dixon Gallery and Gardens Board of Trustees for the last two years, and it has been an honor to serve this marvelous organization. The Dixon is quite often described as the jewel of Memphis, and while that statement is irrefutable, it may also mask the hard work it takes to bring such value to our community. In 2014 alone, the Dixon saw visitors from forty-eight states and more than a dozen foreign countries; we facilitated visits or outreach programs for more than 94,000 people, the most since the 1990s; our traveling shows attracted another 76,000 more visitors in Mt. Vernon, Illinois, Pittsburgh, Columbus, Ohio, and Tampa, shining a brighter light on city of Memphis and the good things that are happening here. Our education programs, art therapy, and gardens workshops continued to bring the creative spark and the wonders of the natural world to those who enjoy it and to those who need it most. In 2014, our exhibition program was again at the heart of all we accomplished. We partnered with the Amon Carter Museum of American Art in Fort Worth, Texas on Color! American Photography Revealed, a major exhibition drawn from public and private collections coast to coast. We organized and presented Memphis-Milano: 1980s Italian Design in the spring of 2014, a unique and wonderful exhibition drawn from a single private collection here in Memphis. Memphis-Milano proved to be the Dixon’s best-attended exhibition of the year, in part because it was the inspiration for the most recent installment of the Memphis Flower Show, another triumph for the Memphis Garden Club. The Dixon originated Charles Courtney Curran: Seeking the Ideal in the summer of 2014, a long overdue retrospective study of one of the nineteenth-century America’s most gifted painters. The Curran show brought the Dixon national attention, as we once again put forth an artist who deserved to be better known. At the same time, we were the first venue for Connecting theWorld:The Panama Canal at 100, organized by the Mint Museum in Charlotte, North Carolina, another excellent national partner. We ended the year by working with the Iris & B. Gerald Cantor Foundation, and opening a nine-museum tour of Rodin:The Human Experience. Throw in the lively exhibitions we presented in our Mallory and Wurtzburger series, and the beautiful Brian Russell show in the gardens, it was yet another outstanding year of programming at the Dixon. Perhaps the most important work we accomplished in 2014 was continuing to implement our Master Plan for the facilities and grounds, and further preparing the Dixon for its future. Every step we take makes the Dixon stronger, better equipped to achieve our long-term goals, and puts a little more shine on this jewel of ours. My thanks to the staff and Board of Trustees of the Dixon for making my tenure as Chair so successful and enjoyable. I also would like to thank you, all of the generous Dixon donors and members, who make our progress possible. You are the heroes of the Dixon’s story. D. STEPHEN MORROW Chairman Emeritus

The Future of the Dixon The Dixon Gallery and Gardens has always benefited from inspired leadership. To study the list of Dixon Board Chairs is by itself a lesson in civic responsibility. Each of these men and women contributed to making our city great and the Dixon what it is today. That statement is especially true of our most recent Chair, Steve Morrow. He and his wife Nancy have been generous in every way possible, a consistently welcoming presence at nearly every opening or event, tireless advocates in the community, and the very picture of wisdom and sound judgment. On behalf of the Dixon Board of Trustees, I would like to offer our deepest and sincerest thanks to Steve Morrow for all he has done the past two years. So much of our success is unquestionably due to his leadership. I am grateful and honored to join the list of Dixon Board Chairs, and I see many exciting opportunities ahead. But before we can seize that bolder future, we must attend to the resources we possess in the here and now. Changing requirements for museum facilities, years of heavy traffic and use, and long-deferred maintenance projects leave us facing a good deal of hard work in 2015. The projects we are undertaking are messy and invasive, but once they are completed, our facility will be in better repair and meet the standards for twenty-first century museums. That is when our future really begins. All of this work is designed to make the Dixon we love even better than it is right now. We will be a more secure and state-of-the-art facility for our visitors, staff, and collections, and a more attractive venue for potential museum partners from across the country and around the globe. And when the work is completed this coming November, we will be perfectly positioned to celebrate the fortieth anniversary of the Dixon in 2016. I am pleased to Chair the Dixon Gallery and Gardens Board of Trustees in 2015 and 2016, and I look forward to all that awaits us. CHRISTINE P. RICHARDS Chair

Introduction At the end of each fiscal year — for us, the last day of December — the Dixon Gallery and Gardens staff begins work on a report of the institution’s activities, finances, and successes in achieving a range of strategic goals. We strive for objectivity in our evaluations, but we also hope that the narratives are readable, the layouts are attractive, and the data presented is interesting as well as informative. To the readers of the Dixon’s Annual Report 2014, either at the time of publication or even many years later, we hope this small book offers an encapsulating glimpse of the year just gone by.You will see in this report the exhibitions we originated and traveled, the publications we produced, the institutional partners we attracted, the acquisitions we made, our activity in the gardens, the impressive number of learning opportunities we created, and the events and performances we hosted. Collectively, they offer a sense of our goals in 2014, and how well we performed in relation to them. After reading the Dixon’s Annual Report 2014, I hope you will notice that the Dixon is steadily tracking upward in every meaningful area of measure. We saw more visitors and have more members than at any time in the last twenty years, and they are producing more revenue than anytime in our history. We are generating more earned income through facility rental, exhibition fees, our plant sales, shop, and gate than at any time in our history. We were once again more effective — for the operating budget and for the Dixon Gallery and Gardens Endowment Fund — than we have ever been. All those metrics are crucial to our success, but they would mean nothing if our programming was not stimulating, smart, and relevant to our audience here in Memphis and visitors from around the globe. I am pleased to report that we have again ended a fiscal year with a balanced budget. This is a tribute to the resourcefulness of our staff and trustee fundraisers, our financial discipline on any number of fronts, and the generous members and donors who support the Dixon. I hope you find this Annual Report 2014 interesting and useful. Please contact me if you have any questions about its contents. KEVIN SHARP Linda W. and S. Herbert Rhea Director
