The Dixon in 2010 The year 2010 may prove to be one of the most important in the history of the Dixon Gallery and Gardens. After endorsing a strategic plan in September 2008, under the leadership of Chairman Thomas C. Adams, the Dixon committed itself to meeting specific and measurable metrics of success.  We made great progress in 2009, stimulating growth in audience development, membership, fundraising, and earned income. But it was in the following year that we began to produce the results we were seeking. In 2010, the Dixon saw its attendance grow by 53% in a single year, and climb by nearly 85% since the end of 2008. Our membership revenue increased by 8% in 2010, and over a two-year-period it went up by 15%. Our membership ranks went over the 3000 mark for the first time in more than fifteen years, an increase of 24% over 2009. In 2010, our development income increased by 9%, and a more robust annual fund program nearly tripled the number of individual donors making contributions to the Dixon. Meanwhile, our earned income went up by 63% in 2010, thanks to an upturn in the gate, revenue from exhibitions we circulated, and facility rental fees. All of this occurred in a very challenging economic environment. In 2010, three of the five major exhibitions in our main galleries were Dixon originated. The popular Helen Turner exhibition traveled to two other venues and was accompanied by an excellent catalogue.  We continued to build and evaluate new education programs (many designed for underserved audiences) in the museum and the gardens. With a grant from the Plough Foundation, we renovated the corner of Park and Cherry in 2010, based on designs by Dixon staff.  We also produced art and horticultural exhibitions for the gardens in 2010, including the spectacular 20,000 Tulips. The Dixon enhanced its security, explored new technology, and improved its HVAC and controls systems in 2010.  We focused on governance, formed new board committees, updated our bylaws, and submitted our American Association of Museums re-accreditation documents in 2010. The momentum of the Dixon reflects the dynamic leadership of Director Kevin Sharp and his talented and dedicated team. It was my privilege to serve with them and the outstanding Board of Directors during this exciting time. R. Brad Martin Chairman Emeritus

The Future of the Dixon The Dixon Gallery and Gardens met a great many of its goals in 2010 for which we can take justifiable pride. But for all of our successes in programming, audience development, and fundraising last year, we can claim with some confidence that the Dixon is only just beginning its ascent. The solid footing on which we now stand will serve as a platform for even greater achievement in 2011 and beyond. For that repositioning and for his inspired leadership in 2009 and 2010,  we owe R. Brad Martin, our board chairman during that period, a great vote of thanks. Many of the exciting programs and events that will take place at the Dixon in 2011, and for years to come, may trace their origins to planning that occurred in 2010. The prototype for our spectacular 2011 display of 100,000 spring flowers in the Dixon Gardens was the beautiful tulip exhibition we presented the previous year. Similarly, the most ambitious exhibition the museum has ever undertaken, Jean-Louis Forain: La Comédie parisienne, which opened in late June 2011, was negotiated, planned, and set in motion in 2010. The many education programs, family days, and outreach initiatives we will produce in 2011 benefited from incubation and support we received in 2010. The Dixon is one of the premier arts organizations in Tennessee and indeed in the entire South. Going forward, we are blessed with strong collections, a beautiful facility, an excellent staff, dedicated supporters, and financial health. Our success in 2010 will no doubt be remembered often as we marshal those resources toward ever-greater achievements to come. It is a privilege to serve as the Chairman of the Dixon Gallery and Gardens Board of  Trustees in 2011 and 2012, and together we will celebrate the achievements that await us in the future. Stephen C. Reynolds Chairman, Board of  Trustees

Introduction This Dixon Gallery and Gardens’ Annual Report 2010 offers a synopsis of the institution’s accomplishments over the twelve-month period. But this publication also provides an unimpeded view of our operation, its structure, funding, and the nature and scope of the audiences the Dixon serves. Transparency is crucial to any organization working to enhance the public good, and that is decidedly so for one that benefits from its taxexempt status and from the generosity of many contributors and members, as we do. In the pages that follow, you will find substantial lists of programs the Dixon produced in 2010, whether exhibitions-related, educational, horticulture-based, or outreachdriven. You will be introduced to acquisitions we made to the Dixon’s fine art and living collections. The report includes a breakdown of our audience numbers, and a charting of our progress as a fundraising and membership organization in 2010. You will find a synopsis of our accomplishments, an accounting of the earned income we generated in 2010, and a statement of our financial position at the end of the year. This report on the Dixon Gallery and Gardens’ fiscal year 2010 is meant to be an unalloyed statement of relevant facts that any interested or disinterested party might consult to better understand the organization, as it existed in 2010. I apologize in advance if some editorializing has crept into the content of this publication. We had an excellent year. Kevin Sharp Linda W   . and S. Herbert Rhea Director Kevin Sharp and Linda  W.
