BOARD OF T RUSTEES AND STAFF
The Dixon in 2015 It was an honor and a pleasure to serve as Chair of the Dixon Gallery and Gardens Board of Trustees in 2015. I am proud of all we accomplished last year, and I look forward to more good things to come in the second year of my tenure, 2016, our fortieth anniversary year. In 2015, the Dixon continued to get stronger as an institution, and we positioned ourselves to better serve our community. From May until November of last year, we closed our museum building for major renovations and infrastructure improvements, and while the work was extensive, invasive, and challenging on any number of fronts, we came out on the other side much healthier for the experience. We now can call ourselves a twenty-first century museum. We delivered a completed renovation project on time and on budget. On behalf of the board, I would like to offer sincerest thanks to the generous local foundations that supported the work: The Assisi Foundation of Greater Memphis Inc., Plough Foundation, The Canale Foundation Inc., and J. R. Hyde III Family Foundation. I offer compliments to the Board of the Dixon Gallery and Gardens Endowment Fund, who shouldered most of the expense, and to the good people at Haizlip Studios and Montgomery Martin Contractors for their excellent work. I also want to thank the Dixon membership, which was patient and understanding throughout the entirety of this inconvenient process. We were concerned about what closing the museum for six months might do to our audience numbers, our membership roles, and our fundraising. Thanks to inventive programming in the gardens—especially Some Like It Hot, our succulent plants exhibition and the amazing Jun Kaneko sculpture show—our annual attendance numbers for 2015 were just two percent behind where we were in 2014, which was our best-attended year in two decades or more. Our membership statistics actually climbed in 2015, and we had a good year for fundraising as well. We understand that all of these impressive and satisfying totals are a tribute to the generosity of Dixon members and supporters. You have our deepest gratitude. ALFRED T. BRICHER, The Cliffs at Nahant, ca. 1885; Oil on canvas, 20 x 50 inches; Collection of Dr. and Mrs. Keith Kattner
Even while the museum was in an uproar, even as the Dixon staff worked in a construction site, they did not cancel a single education program, our summer camp went on as usual, the Art to Grow van kept chugging along, Food Truck Fridays and dozens of other special events still occurred, including Art on Tap and Art on Fire. The staff still planned future exhibitions, planned the reopening of the museum, planned for the fortieth anniversary celebrations, and generally went on conducting business as usual. Our staff is extraordinary and they have my sincere thanks.

Introduction At the close of each fiscal year, which for the Dixon Gallery and Gardens is the calendar year, the staff begins work on a report of the institution’s activities, finances, and successes in achieving a range of strategic goals. We look for measurable metrics and strive to present statistics that are objective and consistent. That said, we also hope this book is a readable and attractive reminder of your experiences at the Dixon in 2015. Even the quickest glance at the Dixon’s Annual Report 2015 should reveal just how unusual the last year was. The museum renovations were only the most visually alarming and dramatic work we did in 2015. The Jun Kaneko sculpture exhibition was far and away the most significant exhibition we ever staged on the grounds of the Dixon, and was an overwhelming success. The gardens staff and our many volunteers produced more programming outdoors than anytime in our history. Our free summer camp for neighborhood children moved to the University of Memphis campus, further deepening relationships with those in our immediate surroundings. And the Dixon staff and board spent much of the year in a productive but protracted discussion about fine art collection building at the Dixon—where the opportunities reside, where we might explore new possibilities, what collection growth means to the institution, how to build symbiosis between the galleries and the gardens, and other thoughtprovoking questions. As in previous years, this 2015 report describes the exhibitions we originated and traveled, the publications we produced, the institutional partners we attracted, the acquisitions we made, the impressive number of learning opportunities we created, and the events and performances we hosted. Collectively, they offer a sense of the goals we set for ourselves in 2015, and how well we performed in relation to them.

After reading the Dixon’s Annual Report 2015, I hope you will conclude that the Dixon remains on an upward trajectory, and that your support is paying dividends. We continue to wring as much value as possible from every philanthropic dollar we receive and from every relationship we forge. The Dixon aspires to greatness because we believe it is what the people of Memphis and the surrounding area deserve. I hope you find this Annual Report 2015 compelling and useful. Please contact me if you have any questions about its contents.

VOLUNTEERS •
Dixon gardens staff were responsible for construction supervision and labor for the installation of an extensively engineered drainage system and plantings in the new terrace spaces flanking the Catmur Foyer. We opened our first plant based exhibition in the Canale conservatory, Winter Wonder: Amaryllis. Over 4500 Amaryllis bloomed over a four month period. The display contained dozens of species plants. The gardens logged over 2800 volunteer hours. The gardens had the most programming in its history with 27 workshops, 15 lectures, 8 exhibitions, and 26 munch and learn programs. As a component of the Some Like It Hot succulent plant exhibition, gardens staff conceptualized, designed, and built the first living wall and green roof at the Dixon.

The gardens completed the admissions booth arbor structure which punctuates the serpentine wall, greets our guests, and adds to the visitor experience. With the help of garden designer Tom Pellett, the Dixon staff revamped the perennial border and reorganized the plantings based on Gertrude Jekyll’s color planting scheme. The gardens staff were involved in many aspects of the Jun Kaneko sculpture show. We established a relationship with the professors and students in the Rhodes College Biology Department as a result of our Amaryllis exhibition. We received the Stanley Smith horticultural trust grant to purchase equipment and provide labor to enhance our living collections tracking.
