ONLINE SUBSCRIPTIONS https://www.seamagazine.com/ subscribe I HAVE BEEN AN avid boater my entire life, that paired with my experience as a magazine editor and publisher for the past three decades have allowed me to immerse myself in a number of skills.

When I began, I was awed by the best in our industry. Until I spent a few sessions in the hands of the best of the best and began to acquire some skills and knowledge of my own. There was one big question that became the bottom line for me; how can I create images suitable for publication that are top quality and will catch our readers’ attention? Crafting that question into an order of steps turned out to be the key to everything else. Lighting, clear skies, the proper film, and if you’re not shooting entirely digital with the advent of automatic cameras--you will have to make adjustments for your equipment. I was using an older Nikon with 400-film, but old habits die hard – especially when you’ve reached or exceeded your skill level and expectations. The keys I’ll leave you with are -1. Lighting: Have your vessel prepared to leave the dock and quietly idling out on the water before first light. My experience has been this is by far the single biggest thing you can do to produce the best possible images of the vessel. The sun waits for no one, be on the water ready to go before the sun begins its morning flight across the horizon. I recall one winter day; we were idling around in the ocean off Long Beach when we discovered we were all but empty in our main tanks. We pulled the bow up on the beach and sent one runner toward the car and another standing by at the boat. That was a hectic morning that could have been easily avoided. 2. There is a magic moment when the light begins to fill in the shallows all over your vessel. This is when you need to be ready to start shooting. It could be as little as 15 or to 20 minutes, after sunrise, maybe even less. Some days will be complete blowouts due to fog, in those instances you slowly work your way back to the dock. 3. Framing your image – You’re out on the water, the sun is a couple of degrees above the horizon, and you’re idling along crawling around on your boat trying to judge the amount and degree of shadows covering the boat. I would always shoot with a 50 mm lens, the image fills the camera easily from side to side and it leaves me with the clearest shot. Leave yourself a little extra, but less than maybe a ¼ to 3/38 inch front and back of the subject. At that distance, the vessel needs to be in perfect focus. After you’ve seen a few shots, it will be readily apparent what a difference this will have on the finished shot. These will be your horizontal shots. Be sure to arrange your onboard crew so they add to the function and utility of what you’re showing off. 4. I had plenty of time in the air as a National Guard officer with a pilot that I could use when I was on duty that does not cover any time over the water or shooting of combat vehicles in the desert. I did make a couple of calls to see what the current rates are for Continued on FROM THE HELM on page 15 2  SEAMAGAZINE.COM  AUGUST 2021

The bow deckhouses a lounge area with a floor on the same level as the cockpit. The bridge is easily accessible through an opening in the middle of the boat and can accommodate guests safely even with the boat in motion. Two opposing sofas, one positioned towards the right side and the other towards the left, can be used either as seats or as chaise lounges. “The E26 Rider comes from reading the style of classic bowriders in a new key,” explains Christian Grande. “A boat that has written the history of pleasure boating and is characterized by a spirit that is sporty, elegant and comfortable at the same time. The space on board develops harmoniously and transforms itself to enhance conviviality. “With a very smooth development, the

distribution of spaces continues amidships: the cockpit reveals itself as the true heart of the boat, an elegant area that is surprising in terms of its size, with functional solutions that leave maximum freedom to people living on board. With perfect symmetry, two large sofas face each other on the two sides, while the pilot and co-pilot seats are pivoting and can be oriented towards the sofas to further extend the area dedicated to conviviality. A sink and a head compartment are next to the piloting console, on the left. At the stern, the outboard motor is flanked on both sides by two bathing platforms. These elegant swim platforms give direct and easy access to the water or the shore, also aided by a convenient retractable ladder. No limits to movement, no limits to freedom.

By that time there have been three more years of technological advances, and who remembers the school of three years ago? With the turnover in the industry, I’d be amazed if the students at that school were still with the same dealer. We’re surrounded by vo-tech schools that are ultimately half-day repositories for recalcitrant high school kids who are waiting for a check without having to learn to earn. That brings me to January 6 and a new round of promises. I am not making a political statement, only doing the math by the headlines. Perhaps my being old enough to be on Social Security makes

me more aware of the ramifications of these promises, and I see some coming problems. Covid has left thousands of dead. It has affected virtually every operational business whether by closure or illness. Lawlessness in cities that usually sustained wealth has taken over. Major national and international companies are moving to more welcoming states like Texas and Florida, hoping to salvage what they worked so hard to grow. One major promise to close the oil pipeline might have used a bit more thought. If the employment numbers are correct, 51,000 people earning $250300,000 a year lost their jobs at the stroke of a pen. That means removing $15,300,000,000 from the economy, then retraining folks to try to learn lesser-paying jobs while their homes and cars are repossessed. Collateral damage includes every imaginable business a medium-sized town would have. It will be a while before those financial losses can be toted. Where will the unemployment benefits come from based on their income? Then there’s the three trillion dollars given to citizens to re-ignite the economy. Numerically three trillion looks more disastrous: $3,000,000,000. It was printed without a second thought of devaluation. Unpaid college tuition has been forgiven. How will colleges be able to pay their expenses and employees if money they expected has evaporated—and don’t even think about what those who worked so hard to pay for their education are thinking. What I’m seeing is fairly simple: 1) a tremendous amount of income removed from the economy; even more arbitrarily printed; and an unforgiveable amount forgiven; 2) a stunning amount of technology hitting the waterways on large multiple-engine pleasure boats; and 3) an inability to grow a workforce with the knowledge and business ethic to service the engines. Just for the heck of it, check some of the sites selling boats and note how new they are, and the money that’s being asked. Finally, the crazy uncle in the corner nobody’s discussing: where is the replacement money coming from? Considering the transparency of Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid, my guess is entitlements for the elderly are going to take a whack. Taxes—personal property as well as sales—will rise dramatically, quickly, as the effects of spending show. Taxes on gasoline will make travel of any sort a luxury. I’m doing the math as far as my calculator goes. I’m watching every penny in my monthly check. I’m watching the educational system. I’m watching the Covid numbers. And combining those I am making a good guess that there will be a reversal of sales of large engines, and once again, as in the late 80s, one in every seven dealers will shutter his doors. This will be a monthly occurrence. However, if there’s anyone left with money who enjoys boating, can afford the fuel, and can nurture his own tech, deals will abound. Since Eeyore and Joe have their own identities, I guess I’ll have to find a generic curmudgeon face. Andy Rooney’s was just too perfect.

MEXICO REPORT

By CAPT. PAT RAINS

This enclosed yacht basin of Marina Isla de Navidad is shielded by two outer lagoons and massive Punta Graham, so it has been a reliable hurricane hideout.

HURRICANE HIDEOUTS FOR SUMMER 2021 LAST YEAR’S HURRICANE SEASON didn’t stop for our global pandemic. No, those warm tropical waters didn’t sequester themselves down south near the Equator. Likewise, all those hungry black, blue and striped marlins; sailfish; dorado; yellowfin tuna – they migrated northward with the sun and warm sea temps.

12  SEAMAGAZINE.COM  AUGUST 2021

Now, because so many of last summer’s sportfishing events were cancelled due to the pandemic, pent-up demand is huge. Many of the popular tournaments were rescheduled and are back on – from Acapulco up to Ensenada. And more cruising boats are heading south too. So, this month I’ll start by detailing two

hurricane hideouts down in the warmer latitudes, before moving up the coast to the Sea of Cortez. BARRA DE NAVIDAD, JALISCO: Farthest south, Marina Isla de Navidad’s man-made yacht basin (210 slips) is a well enclosed interior bay at the foot of the picturesque Grand Bay resort. For 20 years boats inside this marina have been shielded from tropical-storm fury by (1.) Punta Graham’s massive 4,620’ bulk, (2.) the enclosed Laguna Navidad out front and (3.) a quarter-mile long reinforced sandspit upon which the town of Barra was built. Yes, torrential rains might pummel your decks, but dangerous storm runoff that scoured the lagoon anchorages has always bypassed the yacht basin. BANDERAS BAY, JALISCO: Two natural blockades (the bold Cabo Corrientes headland and the Sierra del Cuale (8,858’) above Banderas Bay’s south shores) have long

sheltered hundreds of recreational boats that summer over in four interior marinas located along the bay’s north shore. How’s that work? Tropical storms’ counter-clockwise rotation prevents violent winds and seas from breaching the blockades and reaching west into the bay. Marina Vallarta is in Puerto Vallarta’s municipal harbor. Marina Nuevo Vallarta and Paradise Village Marina are in the Nuevo Vallarta Inlet four miles to the northwest. Marina Riviera Nayarit lies six miles northeast at La Cruz. All are all good hurricane hideouts. LA PAZ, BAJA CALIFORNIA SUR: La Paz is Baja’s gateway to the Sea of Cortez. The year-round liveaboard boating community here is huge. La Paz enjoys general shelter

from cyclonic storms thanks to the massive Sierra Las Cruces peninsula to the east and the low El Mogote peninsula to the west. But specifically, only one marina offers good hurricane shelter. Marina CostaBaja’s two yacht basins are shielded by massive Punta Prieta, and they’re tucked inside tall breakwaters. This marina is located at the start of the narrow La Paz Channel. The downtown anchorages are not safe from storms. PUERTO ESCONDIDO, BAJA CALIFORNIA SUR: Let’s move up to the mid latitudes of the Sea of Cortez. The dramatic peaks of the Sierra La Giganta (900’ to 3,000’ tall) rise three miles west of this small, enclosed bay, effectively shredding any hurricane winds that manage to cross 50 miles over the

Baja Peninsula. Puerto Escondido means Hidden Port because overlapping hills hide the entrance. Marina Puerto Escondido is a major boating center with 70 slips and 85 moorings in the mile-long bay. Their concrete-floored boat yard is a popular place for summer storage. At 15 miles south of Loreto, this is the best hurricane hideout on the Baja Peninsula. GUAYMAS & SAN CARLOS, SONORA: Along the coast of the Sonora Desert, Guaymas commercial port is well enclosed by high hills, especially the bay’s southern shore where boaters haul out for hurricane safety at economical Guaymas Marina Seca boat yard. The harbor’s north end has been storm damaged. SEAMAGAZINE.COM  AUGUST 2021  13

MEXICO REPORT

Only 12 miles north as the crow flies, San Carlos is a beach resort village. The enclosed yacht basin (350 slips) of Marina San Carlos is such a good hurricane hideout that it often gets booked full by August. The marina’s separate dry storage yard (about 350 spots) lies a safe mile inland, also a popular place to park boats over the summer. However, boats anchored outside the marina basin has suffered storm damage. L.A. BAY: BAJA CALIFORNIA NORTE: Taking a last look at the Baja side of the upper Sea of Cortez, the area around remote Bahia de Los Angeles offers absolutely no marinas or yacht services, just a zillion tiny island anchorages. But only one half-mile wide bay called Puerto Don Juan offers reliable hurricane hole protection, thanks to its natural dog-leg entrance channel and hilly enclosure. Hurricanes’ rainy outer bands may occasionally reach this far north, but seldom do the damaging eyes. PUERTO PENASCO, SONORA: For several reasons, this pleasant little shrimpboat harbor provides the safest hurricane hideout in Mexico. (1.) Its narrow dog-leg 14  SEAMAGAZINE.COM  AUGUST 2021

Look for concrete floors when selecting a boatyard to store your vessel over the summer in Mexico. Concrete withstands torrential rain and blistering heat without softening and possibly letting boats tip over.

entrance channel angles NW to SE, thus preventing cyclonic (counter-clockwise) seas from entering this small (quarter mile long) enclosed harbor. (2.) Cliffs of Cerro Penasco and La Choya Peninsula block storm winds from reaching the harbor’s interior. (3.) The eyes of full-blown hurricanes have never survived this far north; mere remnant depressions bring only rain. (4.) Cabrales Boat Yard specializes in lifting yachts for summer storage and can haul them across the U.S. border only 50 miles north. CONSIDERATIONS? Nobody likes to be stuck in one place, especially right after sequestering during the pandemic. If you’re going to stay aboard your boat all summer, I suggest you consider picking one or two hideouts to serve as your home bases. Monitor weather reports before scooting to

a different hidey hole. If you wait too long, the entrance may be closed by breakers. Or no slips will be available to you. Pick your hidey holes near interesting land- and water-based activities like restaurants, pools, day hikes, air-conditioned cinemas, grocery shopping, fishing grounds, pristine dive spots and anchorages. Will you want easy access to an airport or ground transportation? If you’re leaving your boat berthed in Mexico, pick a safe marina that offers sufficient shore power and reliable boat sitting services, like daily checks of your dock lines and fenders, onboard daily checks of your air conditioning, batteries, bilge pumps and engine room. Ask for a weekly report via phone or email. If you opt to leave your boat on the hard, pick a reputable boat yard and inspect their floor surface (concrete) and bracing methods (beefy) to see exactly how and where they’d secure your particular hull. It’s up to you to secure your ports and stuff on deck from potential storm wind and rain.

FROM THE HELM

By DUNCAN MCINTOSH

Continued from page 2 an R22, (two-seater, it was about $480 an hour with a pilot. For a couple more passengers, see if they have an R44 which is a four-seater where the pilot sits on the right with the photographer on the left (it’s the same with an R22). Some photographers like to remove their door for shots, we do remove the door next to the photographer giving that person an unobstructed view of his subject vessels, but because I have no desire to stand on one of the runners outside of the cockpit, I’m just enjoying my time on this earth too much to add any air acrobatics to my routine, I take all my shots buckled up in the cockpit) 5. But remember, not all boats photograph the same, some will look much better with a little more speed. You will need to experiment to find the sweet spot for your vessel. Then be sure to trim her so she rides in the water as she was intended to be driven, while others will look much better at lower speeds. 6. I was wrapping up in Miami one year, had two more vessels to shoot, but was completely out of time, had to do two more boats and miss my flight. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw

one of my all-time great photographers, Forest Johnson in the terminal. Running up to him I asked if he could help me out and knock out two boats so I could catch my flight. He said, of course, Duncan, “What’s you got”. I gave him the details along with my camera and some film, if you can just ship it back freight collect along with your bill and I’ll take care of the rest. Some people are just too good and very professional. About 30 minutes later, we’re taxiing out for our takeoff when my cell rings; it’s Forest with one last question. Duncan, how do you turn this thing on? This reminded me of one last item, there is so much different equipment out there that you never know what you’re going to pick up next. Life will take you to strange places and present you with strange opportunities, photography works in a similar way, keep your camera up and take advantage of the shots life gives you.

It has taken us around 4 weeks - but we have been in absolutely no rush. The little ‘sweet lip’ was caught at Thomas Island on the southern end of the Great Barrier Reef.

Maine Lobster Boil

The Bounty of the Sea Some of my most cherished memories on our boat have been made fishing and foraging for our food. We have visited many remote islands over the last few years, where we troll, jig, spear, or forage what we need (and only what we need) from the wealth of the local ecosystems. I am filled with gratitude and pride when I can plate up an awesome meal that I have sourced myself. INGREDIENTS:

1 fish - depending on how many you are feeding - this was ample for 2 (gutted and scaled. Head on or off to preference) 1/2 green chili - sliced 1/2 red chili - sliced 1 red/Spanish onion finely sliced 2 cloves of garlic - finely sliced 16  SEAMAGAZINE.COM  AUGUST 2021

1 TBS fish sauce 1 TBS Kecap Manis (thick sweet soy) 1 TBS soy sauce/tamari Prepare baking paper and foil - a long enough piece of both to enclose the fish completely. Turn BBQ onto medium heat and preheat for 10-15 minutes. Moosh the chilies, garlic and sauces together in a bowl to soften the chilies and garlic - you don’t want to blend to a paste. (If desired add a TBS palm/brown sugar to this mix.... depending on how I’m feeling, I may or may not add.... I find the Kecap Manis generally sweetens enough). Lay finely sliced onions onto the baking paper/foil and place the fish on this. Place the chili and sauce mix into the gut of the fish as shown. Slash the top of the fish several times and slurp with EVOO,

In March of 2020, we were anchored close to Virgin Gorda in the BVIs. In the blink of an eye, COVID shut the world down, and the BVIs locked their borders – no one in, no one out. Customs offices were closed, and we were told that if we tried to sail to the USVIs or home to the U.S., we could be arrested by the police, who were closely monitoring all waterways. We ended up being quarantined on our 44-ft boat for three months. NO going ashore. NO paddle boarding. NO using the dinghy. We would order food and water from Leverick Bay to be delivered to the dock, which would be passed up onto the boat deck (after we had received police permission to move the boat for one hour), for us to live off of for the next two weeks. The only saving grace during the quarantine was that we were allowed to swim off of our boat, and we happened to be anchored close to an amazing coral garden. We spent an hour every day snorkeling the surrounding area to exercise and were lucky enough to spear some enormous lobsters along the way. While spiny lobsters are very different from Maine lobsters (where we are from) and are often prepared with a Caribbean flair when served in the islands, my homesickness influenced my cooking from time to time, and a summer “Maine” lobster boil was a weekly meal on our boat. INGREDIENTS:

Lobster (caught or bought) Potatoes, butter or olive oil, s/p, dill or thyme (optional)

garlic clove (no need to dice it, just leaving it smashed whole in the dressing will give just the right amount of garlic flavor), 1-2 TBSP Dijon ground mustard, and ½ teaspoon of maple syrup (this takes the bite edge off of the vinegar and makes the dressing more rounded). Caribbean Smoothie This smoothie is a great alternative to the usual breakfasts and provides a cool boost to your day. Its super easy and all it requires is a liquidizer or stick blender and 2 large tumblers. INGREDIENTS:

2 ripe bananas 1 cup of frozen diced mango 1 tub coconut yogurt (approx 150g) 1/2 cup skimmed milk

Corn, parmesan cheese, s/p Simple salad with classic French vinaigrette – greens, olive oil, lemon juice, 1 garlic clove, ground Dijon mustard, maple syrup, s/p The simplicity of this meal is wonderful. You can virtually make everything using one pot if you need to. Lobster – Using a big pot, bring 2-3 inches of water to a medium boil (you can add old bay, lemon, or other herbs to the water if you’d like for added seasoning). Add lobster to pot, cover with lid, reduce heat to medium low, and steam for approximately 8 – 12 minutes depending on the size of your lobster. Remove lobster from heat and let cool until manageable. Serve with butter (heated on the stove) or malt vinegar. Potatoes – Start potatoes in pot with cold salted water, enough to just cover the potatoes. Bring water to a simmer and cook potatoes until a paring knife easily moves through the center. Remove potatoes, dry, then mix and smash slightly in a bowl with olive oil or butter, salt and pepper, and your favorite herb (I like thyme or dill).

Corn – Boil water in a big pot, add corn and cook about 5-7 minutes until a knife can poke through the kernels (kernels should be bouncy on the outside and juicy in the middle.) Remove from heat, and mix with butter, grated parmesan cheese, salt and pepper. Salad – If you are lucky enough to have sourced greens on your boat, use whatever you have! I love to make a simple French vinaigrette on our boat. I use three parts fats to 1 part acid for my vinaigrettes. So, ¼ cup lemon juice (or red wine vinegar if you don’t have lemons), ¾ cup olive oil, a smashed

Skin and roughly dice the bananas putting the fruit directly into a blender. Add the rest of the ingredients and blend for at least 1 minute. Let the mixture rest for 30 seconds and whiz up again for a further 10 seconds. This allows the frozen mango to defrost slightly and cool all the other ingredients. Pour into 2 tumblers and top with fresh mint. Enjoy! Serves 2. Tips: If you cannot buy frozen mango, then prepare 1 large fresh mango the day before and freeze overnight. Mango will keep this way for several months and a great way to ensure a good supply of fruit out of season. Milk can be replaced with non-dairy options such as almond or coconut but try to use the unsweetened varieties if possible (ripe banana adds enough sweetness). Water can also be used as a substitute. Dried mint can be used as an alternative to fresh. Try this as a sundowner; replace 1 banana with 1/2 cup of ice and add a shot of rum! THE NEW “FULL ELECTRIC” MAGONIS WAVE E-550 The savoir-faire of Italian handcrafting COMBINING COMFORT, EFFICIENCY, AND

respect for the environment, with a keen eye for the details that make a boat instantly recognisable: this was the starting point that guided the creation of Wave e-550, the first model from the Italo-Spanish shipyard Magonis, which made its world debut in May at the Venice Boat Show 2021. The shipyard, with its headquarters in Barcelona and production site in Sabaudia, 18  SEAMAGAZINE.COM  AUGUST 2021

Italy, has drawn on the different influences of the two countries. Catalan creativity and exuberance have been combined with Italian taste and technology to create a boat that, in its 5.50 metre length (4.96 m at waterline) and 1.98 metre width, has all the ideal comforts for an enjoyable day cruise, be it sailing on Lake Garda (with all routes permitted, including the ones on the upper lake, forbidden to traditional motorboats), in the sea of Capri or a quick crossing from

Ibiza to Formentera. With a depth of just 0.30 m, it is possible to venture almost to the shore in complete silence thanks to the electric propulsion. To dispel any misgivings about electric motors (nowadays, in the Tesla era, much less than in the past), here are the performances: 22 knots maximum speed and a range of 12 hours at cruising speed. The displacement of 335 kg highlights the vacuum infusion construction of the exclusive Light X Pro technology, developed by the Magonis team of engineers and designers. FOUR ELECTRIC PROPULSION SYSTEMS TO SUIT EVERY OWNER Motorisation, strictly outboard, comes in the shape of two authentic icons of electric propulsion: the Torqeedo Cruise from 4 to 10 kW (approximately the equivalent of 20

that can be transformed in an instant from a cosy dinette into an equally usable sunbed. In the cockpit, comfortable seating and a protective windscreen ensure comfortable and safe navigation for up to six passengers. Standard equipment includes a 4kg stainless steel dolphin striker and anchor, a bathing ladder with four large steps, four designer stainless steel cleats. Stainless steel is used for the forward rail and windscreen uprights. There are plenty of optional features: telescopic table, full teak deck, refrigerator, shower, anti-theft device and an 8-square-metre XXL awning supported by carbon uprights.

Magonis Wave e-550 has several solutions that are not usually found on boats of this size, starting with the instrumentation, which has been replaced by a suitably waterproofed 13” iPad that owners can always carry with them. There is also a dedicated slot for charging smartphones, while music is provided by a 120 W Fusion system. Even when it comes to price, the Magonis Wave e-550 manages to impress, considering the quality of its finish and its electric drive, which guarantees an excellent second-hand price over the years. Prices range from 33,485 Euro with the Torqeedo Cruise 4.0 RL to 68,900 Euro with the Mag Power 30.0, all including VAT. HYLAS H57 Sailing Photo Credits: Abner Kingman

THE FORM AND ST YLING of the Hylas 57 is for sure a head turner. Its flowing lines, integrated hardtop with extending awning, windshield and the innovative social spaces in the cockpit and aft deck make it worthy of further investigation. The fundamental design and overall look of the Hylas 57 has proven to be an immediate winner. But Hylas feels that the interior build quality and styling is worth as much consideration as the performance of the yacht. After all you buy a house based on features and location but what makes it a home is what you do with the interior.

“We often hear folks refer to a Hylas interior as an evolution,” said Peggy Huang, Director at Hylas Yachts. “Each new owner brings a few personal touches and modifications that best suit their particular 22  SEAMAGAZINE.COM  AUGUST 2021

tastes and needs. As prospective owners start to consider their own interior looks, they pick up on the nuances that others have introduced over the years. From the layout and cabinetry point of view these changes become fewer as time goes on as there must always be functional considerations and there is only a finite amount of space. The look and feel however is almost always an enhancement of a yacht that has gone before.” With the introduction of new models like the Hylas 60 and Hylas 57 the designers paid much attention to the structural interior. However, there are opportunities to make delicate changes that can be considered beyond color, fabrics, textures and finishes. What is missing with the launch of a new model is the benefit of multiple

owners having applied their own thoughts and ultimately providing the guidance for the next generation. Introducing an interior designer for each build would be a costly undertaking for the new owner. This would also be prohibitive for the factory as there is a significant impact on the factory’s ability to source from known suppliers that allow the yard to manage quality and monitor service. That being said, wouldn’t it be nice to just let go and see what an award-winning interior designer could do with the yacht? ITALIAN MATCH In recent years there have been huge developments in design software and the introduction of synthetic materials that hold up well in the marine environment.

Builder Hylas https://www.hylasyachts.com/

The possibilities are becoming almost impossibly infinite. The question then is how to help owners buying the new models to appreciate these possibilities without the benefit of multiple preceding builds. The answer comes from an introduction to Hot Lab, an interior yacht design house based in Italy. They are well established in the super yacht world and have been working with Hylas for close to 5 years. The owners of hull #3 of the H57, are no strangers to the value an award-winning interior designer can bring to the project. They have given Hot Lab an open brief and, between the concept drawings and mood boards developed by Hot Lab, have come up with an interior that is quite striking. The interior is clearly “designer” and befitting

a yacht that brings a new level enhanced lifestyle to the performance cruiser market. MAKING A SPLASH With final “sign off” in place, the factory has been busy sourcing fabrics, woods, cutting surfaces, designer fixtures and fittings from around the globe. CEO Andy Huang recognizes the complexity in a project like this but there is also a good deal of learning and opportunities to engage with suppliers that may be called upon with a future build. “There is nothing more exciting than seeing a truly spectacular yacht coming to life in our facilities,” said Andy Huang. “This is something that is only really possible if the yard is heavily vested in the brand.

We will never compromise on quality. We recognize there will be new materials and manufacturing techniques and, as this is a showcase concept, we are willing to put in the time to ensure a Hylas quality finish. It’s good to have one of these detailed concept designs for each new model as it will help our future clients to make their own decisions.” The design consideration does not end with the interior and in fact it spills out to align the exterior of the yacht. The coloring of the rig, hardtop and hull is all coordinated to fit the Hot Lab color palette. Even selecting the most suitable color for the sails that are available from North in their latest 3di sail material, has been taken into consideration. SEAMAGAZINE.COM  AUGUST 2021  23

GRAND BANKS 85 CRAFTSMANSHIP, INGENIOUS ERGONOMICS & INTERIOR VOLUME REDEFINE LONG-DISTANCE CRUISING

FOLLOWING THE SUCCESSFUL INITIAL sea trial of the first Grand Banks 85, the company has finalized the interior details of this pioneering long-distance cruiser. As one would expect from a yacht in this category, each GB85 will be built to suit the individual needs of her owner, based on the model’s ergonomic open-plan platform. Yet every GB85 will reflect the company’s relentless pursuit of perfection, a 65-year legacy of delivering world-renowned craftsmanship and a timeless interior fit-out designed to withstand a saltwater environment.

Like all new Grand Banks models, the GB85 benefits from the infinite knowledge gained from building cruising designs for nearly seven decades and delivering more than 7,000 yachts. Whether it’s a focus on maximizing storage, allowing an abundance of fresh air flow, or ensuring comfort both at sea and at anchor, there is not a detail on the GB85 that has been ignored. A beam of 22 feet allows Grand Banks to offer a range of internal configurations and amenities for guests and crew. For long-distance cruising, special attention was given to both sociability and privacy. 24  SEAMAGAZINE.COM  AUGUST 2021

“First, we focused on what makes a superior long-distance cruiser while underway for long legs,” said CEO Mark Richards. “This means understanding the rhythm that occurs while on passage and creating various spaces where you can separate from others off-watch. Some people onboard are focused on running the boat, others are relaxing, and others may be sleeping. This approach ticks a lot of boxes in how the design comes together.” The next objective is to focus on comfort when at anchor or at the dock. Grand Banks ensures one mission is not compromised for the sake of the other. Decks are arranged for outdoor dining and entertaining. A supremely comfortable lounge seating area in the main salon optimizes space between the main deck and aft deck by using the full beam of the vessel in a configuration that is both open and intimate. 360° sight lines are a Grand Banks hallmark and the expansive windows, combined with and an electrically opening aft window, allow guests to view their surroundings from almost any position within the GB85’s main salon or dining area. The Grand Banks team appreciates that a morning anchorage is much more memorable if you can open windows and enjoy the fresh air, sights,

Belowdecks is where the full benefit of the 22-foot beam is realized. “We recognize that we have potential GB85 clients who are true owner-operators,” said Richards. “Yet some might want the occasional crew so we ensured we have very comfortable crew accommodations that can also be enjoyed as another area for kids or the in-laws.” At present, the GB85 offers two distinct crew accommodation layouts that look to be the envy of the industry.

and scents of your destination. Although hull #1 features the Skylounge version, the GB85 is also available in an Open Bridge configuration which offers a lower helm area forward. The Skylounge version places the galley all the way forward just abaft the windshield, providing the cook with an incredible view over the horizon. The arrangement allows for a superior use of space and utilization while underway or entertaining at the dock. An internal dining area featuring customized, handcrafted furnishings is located between the galley and main salon.

The additional Skylounge salon rivals the main deck salon area of many 60-footers and essentially offers a second, separate lounging area. While the adults are enjoying a lively dinner and conversation below, kids can relax in the upper lounge, complete with additional refrigeration and pantry stowage. The elevated helm area is forward and comfortably accommodates four adults seated while underway. The starboard helm position and lowering side and aft windows offer terrific sightlines. Overhead, an expansive electric opening sunroof further transforms the space with an open feel comparable to the open flybridge configuration.

The master stateroom is positioned to maximize the full beam and the end result rivals even the finest suites in any luxury hotel. The king-size bed is positioned to allow a view to the anchorage from the pillowtop. A lounge area is the ideal perch for a morning cup of coffee and a good book as you plan out your next destination, and hull #1 even houses a custom retractable hide for her owners’ piano keyboard. The three-quarter beam master head has two vanities and a large shower that benefits from another port within the space, while being connected to the robe on the portside. As one would expect, locker and drawer stowage are abundant.

SNAPSHOT Aft of the midship houses the crew accommodations, accessible via both the cockpit and transom/lazarette, spanning the full beam of the yacht. Grand Banks has gone to tremendous lengths to take the GB85’s crew accommodations to a new level for a yacht of this size and expects the spaces to be the envy of the industry. The configurations allow options for multiple berths in separate rooms, either single or double, with a full-size head and galley, or the option for a single stateroom with walkaround queen berth complete with hanging lockers, and a larger galley. Grand Banks’ designers will work with each client to fine-tune the space to suit their individual needs. Yet, based on initial interest, many are recognizing the fundamentals are already in place and have primarily focused on customizing hard and soft goods. A generous hard- and soft-good allowance is provided, along with a professional interior design team.

I’m not saying they’re wrong and we’re right. We are just building boats for a clientele that still appreciates classic design, with a warmth and beauty true to traditional nautical style. The GB85 concept originated from the company’s and Mark’s passion to deliver the most fuel-efficient long-range cruiser of its size on the water. The remarkable cruising efficiency the company saw on the GB85’s initial sea trial confirms that the inconvenience and hassle of stopping for fuel constantly is a thing of the past. This is a long-range cruiser with legs, able to be owner-operated with ease, and built

with the state-of-the-art materials and construction methods. The GB85’s entire deck and superstructure is built using 100% carbon fiber, vacuum infused with vinyl ester resin, to ensure that the gold standard combination of strength, weight reduction, and durability realized on every vessel. “To cruise at 21 knots for 900 – 1,000 nautical miles in supreme comfort, without needing to refuel, was the target for this design. We’re extremely proud of the team’s achievement here and are excited to show the world what this incredible new yacht can do.” summarized Richards. Stay tuned as Grand Banks continues to reveal details throughout the fit-out of this remarkable vessel and prepares for official sea trials in the coming months.

Why is it important to go through a Broker when buying or selling a boat? Brokers know the market, know how to manage the process and keep the transaction on track. Van Helker van@waterlineboats.com Waterline Boats Port Townsend Office 425.246.5101 Seattle Office 206.282.0110 waterlineboats.com

Imagine the ideal broker to help you buy or sell your boat. What are their qualities? On-the-water experience, a strong network of experts to call on, the ability to add or create value for you in negotiations - these are all desirable. But don’t overlook the importance of selecting a broker that you personally click with. Sellers should identify a broker that has an effective digital marketing strategy that is suited for their boat. – Van Helker

What are some buying/selling changes that you have seen during the pandemic?

There has been a huge increase in boating activity and demand in general, and the supply of new and used boats nationwide, and even worldwide, has diminished significantly. As Steve Schock Ruth Schock such, customers Schock Boats are more likely steve@schockboats.com to buy what is 714.642.1227 www.schockboats.com available rather than wait for the ordered boat of their dreams. Additionally, manufacturers are booked out months longer than normal on new boats, so there is a higher level of competition for the available inventory in order for customers to get out on the water this season. We are seeing models that will normally ship in 3 to 6 months, that now have a lead time of a year or more for a custom ordered boat. On some of our incoming new boat shipments, we will have four or five customers interested in the same boat. Consequently, once a customer has determined the boat that they are interested in, they will need to have a deposit ready to go and be willing to put their deposit down before the boat arrives and someone else puts down their deposit. Additionally, covid impacts and supply chain and shipping constraints have caused delays in some boat and parts areas. And boat slips and storage have become more precious. – Steve Schock

SELLING YOUR BOAT BY CHRIS CASW ELL

Y

OU’VE HAD GREAT fun with your boat, but the time has come to move on to a boat that is (choose one): larger, faster, shinier, newer. She’s been your best friend but you’ve got “boat fever” and, if you’re like most boatowners, you’ll trade up on a regular basis. All those new boats at the boatshows caught your eye but, before a new boat arrives in your slip, you have to sell the old one.

Here are ten tips to make your boat a fast seller. 1. Clean. It’s a natural human trait: we draw conclusions based on visual evidence. When a potential buyer walks up to your boat and sees ratty docklines, it’s clear that you don’t take care of essentials. When the buyer looks into the bilge and sees rusty brown water, you obviously aren’t a good boatkeeper. If he pulls an engine dipstick and sees dirty black gunk, well, what would you think about the engine condition? I know that when I see a boat that is a floating ghetto, two things come to mind. First, I automatically assume that maintenance is equally shoddy on all the systems and, second, I think about making a low-ball offer. Any yacht broker will tell you the first

30 seconds aboard are the most important and, if your buyer sees a sparkling boat, it’s already half sold. In real estate, the three most important words in a home are “location, location, location”. For boats, it’s “looks, looks, looks”. On the outside, now is the time to wax the hull, polish the metal to a gleam, and add a coat of fresh varnish. Teak decks shouldn’t be gray, and non-slip surfaces shouldn’t have stains, either. A small investment in maintenance can earn you thousands in resale value. Inside, give your boat a good spring cleaning. If you have carpet, a shampoo will remove the dirt and stains that you don’t even notice anymore. Curtains and upholstery need cleaning, too, especially if you have pets or smokers aboard. In the galley, it’s particularly important

to clean the stove and oven to get rid of the spills and crumbs from last season, because many women look at the stove to see how well the boat is maintained. Empty out the refrigerator, clean it thoroughly, and leave an open box of baking soda to remove the odor of that onion you forgot months ago. Wipe down the cabinets and bulkheads using a household cleaner and I guarantee: you’ll be shocked by the color of the cloth. Tip: Leave sheets of scented fabric softener in drawers and lockers, so that they have the flavor of fresh laundry when a buyer opens them. When you’re cleaning, don’t just think about the broad strokes, such as the hull or deck, but get down to the details, too. Nothing makes a worse first impression than a once-yellow shore cord that is a sticky-icky blackish color. And, yes, cleaning means the bilge, too. If it’s really grim, call in some professionals who can steam or pressure wash it back to pristine.

2. Good Smelling. Clean is just a start, because your boat has to smell clean and fresh, too. How many times have you stepped below into a funky aroma that combines oil, mildew, dirty bilge and a nasty head into a scent that is guaranteed to kill a sale. Cleaning your boat thoroughly is a good start, but pay particular attention to the head, where it needs to look and smell like the day the boat launched. Empty the holding tank, and add chemicals to neutralize any aroma. Make sure you leave ports or hatches open to air the boat thoroughly. Think about how inviting it feels when you’re looking at boats in a boatshow, and make yours the same. 3. De-Junkify. The old joke is that a boat is a hole in the water, but the truth is that we throw junk, not money, into it. If you were to open every locker today, you’d be astounded at the useless stuff you have aboard. Empty WD-40 cans, bent shackles, gaskets that fit nothing aboard, all the stuff that had to be tossed somewhere but which never left. Why do we fill galley drawers with stray corks, because no one ever loses corks. Archaeologists would have a field day aboard any modern yacht. Empty lockers look much larger and you’ll find that many of the odors you’ve been fighting emanate from the grungy stuff in lockers. Clean the lockers, and the aroma goes, too. When you get them emptied, it would be a good idea to throw a coat of white paint in there, too. You want your buyer to think you have immense amounts of stowage space because, as you know, there is never enough. 4: De-Personalize> Take off all your personal gear, too, because you want the potential buyers to start thinking about her as their boat. Personal photographs: gone. Lipstick and shaving cream in the head: gone. Not only will this get rid of personal attachments, but it makes the boat larger, too. Don’t forget the hanging lockers while you’re getting your gear off. A locker full of someone else’s aromatic foul weather jackets isn’t conducive to a sale. This is also the time to remove anything

that doesn’t go with the sale. Too many million-dollar sales have been queered at the eleventh hour by the question of who gets the $100 barometer. Don’t pillage the boat, but take anything with a personal sentiment and leave the rest. Tip: take the toaster and blender from the galley. They date the boat, make the counters look crowded, and are probably dirty, too. 5. Fix: I’ve always found it amusing that the only time everything works perfectly on my boats is when I put them up for sale. No boat larger than a dinghy sells without a survey these days, so it’s better to fix things before that point. Now is the time to cure that erratic windshield wiper because Murphy’s Law says that a buyer is going to flip that one particular switch. Sure, you lived with it, but the buyer only sees an example of poor maintenance. Make sure the fire extinguishers are current, the lifejackets legal, and the flares within their expire dates. When it comes to the canvas on board, if yours is worn or tired, you have two choices: remove it or repair/replace it. Remove anything that isn’t necessary to the sale to cut your replacement costs. But a Bimini top is expected so either repair the frozen snaps or, if the top is marginal, replace it. I shouldn’t have to say this, but make sure the engines start promptly. Many sales have been lost because a battery was drained and the engine wouldn’t fire. Tune the engines and charge the batteries, because you want to impress the buyer with engines that fire instantly. Speaking of engines, now is the time to think about having your engine steamed to get rid of all the oil. The downside is that it will show the bare spots that rust immediately. You’ll want to wire-brush them and touch them up with the engine enamel. Don’t---ever---just paint over everything. That’s a red flag for buyers and surveyors alike. They both assume you’re hiding something. When it comes to electronics, you’re probably best leaving them, rather than trying to upgrade them. Every buyer has

different tastes in brands and types so, if your electronics are old or tired, you might want to make it clear that you’re giving the buyer a rebate of x-thousand dollars for new electronics of his choice. That’s turning a negative into a positive, and he’ll start dreaming about all the new black boxes he can buy…for your former boat. If you had the engines or gear rebuilt professionally, get the receipts and make them available. You need to prove that your engines or generator have a certain number of hours, or that the air conditioning was rebuilt on this date. Again, this is reassuring to the buyer. 6. History/Photos: Sure, a boat can sell on its own but, with a little work, you can add immensely to the sale price. Some of the smartest buyers I’ve seen have assembled a notebook, providing all the details on the boat: history, upgrades, inventory, systems. Some have included tearsheets from positive magazine reviews of the boat, others have listed the voyages taken. This is, plain and simple, a selling tool. Tip: you might include some ads for similar boats… that are more expensive, of course! The same thing applies to photography. I’m always astounded, in this age of digital cameras, that so many brokerage photos look like they used a Polaroid from the ‘60s. Get good, well-lit photos of every area of your boat, from saloon to cabins and heads. This means the engineroom, cockpit, foredeck and, if there is one, the flybridge. Get detail shots of the electrical panel, electronics, and don’t forget the tender, too. 7. Survey. There are many who say that having a survey before you sell your boat is an unnecessary expense, but I think that it’s worth every penny. First, there’s going to be a survey because your buyer is smart and, besides, it’s required for insurance and financing. More important, though, is that it gives you a chance to fix things for a few dollars that might take thousands off the selling price. You’ll get a preview of what the buyer’s surveyor is going to find wrong, and you can make them right. Now is not the time to stint on fixing SEAMAGAZINE.COM  AUGUST 2021  35

h

things found on the survey. Sure, it may cost you a hundred dollars to fix the compass light but the buyer’s surveyor may suggest taking off a thousand dollars because all the compass might be bad, too. It’s better to cure it now, on your terms. 8. Price. Most people don’t realize it but there are, of course, three prices: the seller’s price, the buyer’s price, and the fair market value. Your starting point should be the market value because owners invariably overvalue their boats. See at what price similar boats with similar equipment are selling, and then price yours aggressively, because you don’t want to be on the market for months. You want to be in your new boat. You can’t do anything about the buyer’s idea of the price, but if he makes an offer fairly close to what you are asking, grab the money and run. You can make up any difference when you buy your next boat.

Experienced yacht brokers shake their heads with tales of clients who held out for a few bucks more and lost a sale, only to have their boats languish for months longer on the market. No, you shouldn’t take a bath on your boat, but don’t be penny-foolish. 9. Props. I left this for last because you have to get all the previous items in order, but you should imagine your boat as a stage and you need to add props to make it convincing. Don’t go overboard, but a few items can make all the difference. For example, the dining table should be set for a nice dinner. If you’re leaving your plates aboard, so much the better. Placemats, dishes, wine glasses. Have you ever seen a brochure for a new boat that didn’t have the dining table decorated invitingly? The same for the staterooms. Don’t leave the mattresses bare: a cheerful and

inexpensive comforter, with a couple of matching pillows turns a prison cell into an inviting getaway. In the head, hang one towel on the bar or it will look too stark. Don’t go overboard with vases and décor: that’s what you removed to make the boat look large. Perhaps a book or two on a shelf, a magazine on the coffee table. Lived in but not overloaded is the goal. 10. Enjoy. This is a boat you’ve enjoyed, and it’s now time for her to go to a new owner. This shouldn’t feel like arm-wrestling with Arnold Schwartzeneggar. It should be a good time, when you can start thinking seriously about your next boat. Saying goodbye to an old friend is always tough but that’s offset by getting top dollar that you can put toward a new dream boat. One thing to remember: there is someone out there who wants your boat. After all, you did!

Crow's Nest Yachts

Crow’s Nest Yachts Seattle Since 1974, “The Crow’s Nest” has been a leader in brokerage yacht and boat sales. Their three waterfront offices span the entire US west coast from Seattle to San Diego. Similarly, their yacht marketing footprint runs the gamut of prominent online and traditional channels, from print advertising, to multiple websites, social media, email marketing campaigns, and of course–boat shows. Seattle Office In October 2010, the Seattle office was purchased by three senior sales staff members. With over 80 years of combined experience and an acute knowledge of local boating in the Northwest, the new owners were poised with all the tools needed to tailor their business to the needs of their customers. Dan Wood Born and raised in Seattle, Dan Wood began his marine industry career serving, for five years, as an alternate skipper and engineer fishing king crab in the Bering Sea. Later running a boatyard in Seattle, he serviced as a dealer corporate account for two well-established yacht lines. He was offered a job at the dealership and sold boats for seven years. Dan took a project management position building a 115-foot tri-deck yacht. Dan got his captain’s license and piloted the yacht for many years. In 2000 Dan delivered a yacht to the Crow’s Nest in Newport Beach, CA, discovered that the owners planned on opening a Seattle office, and then joined their brokerage business, ultimately becoming a partner owner in October 2010. Vic Parcells To say that Vic has a passion for the water and boating would be an understatement. A WA native, started boating before he could walk. As a 2nd generation boat salesman, Vic learned how to sell boats under the tutelage of his father at the young age of 17. After years of training, Vic ascended his way up the corporate ladder of boat sales and moved into yacht sales. Vic has also managed a variety of yachts, been a fishing guide, and been a skipper along the West Coast, his knowledge of which has allowed him to make several trips, from Canada to Cabo San Lucas. As a trusted salesman, Vic has also had the pleasure to deliver yachts all over the world, including trips from Washington to the Caribbean via

the Panama Canal. “I have had the privilege to be a fixture of the Seattle yachting and boat world for the past 40 years,” says Parcells, also a partner of the Seattle office since 2010. Gary Ramberg “I have been boating as long as I can remember. Fishing with my Dad in Montana, then moving to Oregon in 1961 we fished, waterskied, and cruised the Columbia River. In 1985, my wife and I bought our first flybridge cruiser. From then on we spent every bit of our time on the water that we could. I have been in the boating business since 1989 with Pier Fun Yacht Center in Oregon. In 2002, we purchased Diamond Yacht Sales in Blaine, WA. Sold the brokerage and retired in 2010. FISHING INDUSTRY RESPONDS TO OFFSHORE WIND ANNOUNCEMENTS Pacific Coast Federation of Fishermen’s Association’s released statement called for answers about the effect the wind power would have on the environment and fishing industry off the California coast.

By: JORDAN B. DARLING NORTHERN CALIFORNIA — On May 25 the

Pacific Coast Federation of Fishermen’s Association released a statement opposing the federal and state government’s push to expedite the process of producing offshore wind energy off the California coast. The Biden-Harris administration released a statement on May 25 sharing that the Departments of the Interior and Defense along with the State of California had agreed to accelerate the production of wind energy on the central and northern parts of California’s coast, and in an answer the PCFFA released their own statement that voiced concern over what they perceive as a lack of answers and research into the clean energy method and the exclusion of the fishing industry in the decision making process. “The Pacific Coast Federation of Fishermen’s Associations (PCFFA) remains concerned about rushing unproven technology, with unknown impacts to our ocean ecosystem, in locations which were not identified with any meaningful input by the fishing industry,” said Mike Conroy, PCFFA’s executive director in the May 25 press release. 48

“Floating wind turbines have not been deployed in the scale being considered off the California coast. Far too many questions remain unanswered regarding potential impacts to marine life which is dependent on a healthy ecosystem. For example, potential impacts to upwelling, potential impacts of noise generated by construc-

tion and operation of an industrial offshore wind farm, and impacts of electromagnetic fields on pacific coast salmon stocks, other important commercial and recreational fish stocks, marine mammals and seabirds are all still unanswered.” State and federal governments have identified two areas off the coast to build

THE WORLD-RENOWNED SQUADRON. REIMAGINED. When redesigning the Squadron 68, we took inspiration from the past. What made the Squadron range such a winning formula the world over, was behind every design consideration. The result? A masterclass in intelligence and restraint. With subtle exterior styling updates and a new interior layout using materials that make it achingly beautiful. It really was no surprise that the Squadron 68 was awarded ‘Best Interior Design’ at the World Yacht Trophies in 2019 – a re-design that has taken the interior to the next level.

REGIONAL NEWS the prospective wind farms, Morro Bay and the Humboldt Call Area. “I believe that a clean energy future is within our grasp in the United States, but it will take all of us and the best-available science to make it happen,” said Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland in the May 25 press release from the Biden-Harris administration. “Today’s announcement reflects months of active engagement and dedication between partners who are committed to advancing a clean energy future. The offshore wind industry has the potential to create tens of thousands of good-paying union jobs across the nation, while combating the negative effects of climate change. Interior is proud to be part of an all-of-government approach toward the Biden-Harris administration’s ambitious renewable energy goals.” The project is part of the administration’s goal to create jobs through the deployment of 30 gigawatts of offshore wind by 2030 and California’s goal of carbon-free energy by 2045; these new developments would bring 4.6 GW of energy to the grid and potentially create 25,000 constructions jobs and an additional 7,000 jobs in communities support by the development according to the May 25 Fact Sheet released by the Biden-Harris administration. Currently there is one wind farm off the coast of Rhode Island with 30 megawatts of electricity capacity with plans for more along the East Coast of the United States, and there are currently 12 European countries that have offshore wind energy projects as of the end of 2020, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management is hosting a virtual California Intergovernmental Renewable Energy Task Force meeting on June 24, the meeting is open to the public. However, the meeting will be held the same day as the June Pacific Fishery Management council. To learn more about BOEM see https://www.boem.gov/. GOVERNOR REDUCES BOAT REGISTRATION FEE INCREASE IN REVISED 2021-22 BUDGET PROPOSAL After significant input from boating advocates and the community, the proposed fee for the two-year California recreational vessel registration went from $70 in the January proposed 2021-22 budget to $40 in the May revision. By: LINDSEY GLASGOW SACRAMENTO — Governor Gavin Newsom has released a revised version of his 202122 budget and included is a reduction in the proposed vessel registration fee increase. The revised May 2021-22 budget increases the cost of the two-year California recreational vessel registration from the current $20 to $40. The previous budget proposal released in January included a 250 percent increase to $70 biennially. The revised budget would also increase a proposed two-year, $20 million spending level for the Harbors and Watercraft Revolving Fund by $10.7 million over the next four years. The HWRF is the primary fund source for boating programs managed by the California Division of Boating and Waterways. California State Parks had proposed the registration fee increase to address what staff said will be a $52 million annual deficit in the HWRF and to maintain the current service levels. The increase was proposed as a solution for short term solvency for the fund as the department worked with stakeholders to come up with a long-term solution. “We’re appreciative of the significant changes,” said Jerry Desmond, Esq., director of Government Relations for Recreational Boaters of California. RBOC was part of a coalition of boating stakeholders, which also included Boat Owners Association of The United States, the National Marine Manufacturers Association, the Marine Recreation Association, the California Association of Harbor Masters and Port Captains, and the California Yacht Brokers Association, that have been advocating for six key changes to the budget proposal, including significantly reducing the registra-

tion fee increase and redirecting a portion of the $107 million in annual boat fuel tax dollars to the HWRF. The groups had raised concern that of the $107 million boaters pay each year in fuel taxes to the state, only $15 million is provided to the HWRF for programs and services that directly benefit boaters. The rest goes to the State Parks’ general fund, which staff said also benefits boaters. “I don’t think boaters are opposed to fees but they want to see that’s its going into the programs and projects that are going to help them get out on the water,” said BoatUS Manager of Government Affairs David Kennedy. RBOC and BoatUS reported more than 4,000 individuals from the boating community also advocated, contacting their California state legislators and the governor’s office asking for a reduced registration fee increase. “This kind of input really does have an impact on what happens with policies,” said Kennedy. “…Getting that kind of input from the boaters is so important and I think we’re seeing the results of that.” Desmond said they are continuing to advocate for other budget provisions. As the budget stands now, it establishes a stakeholder process to develop long-term funding approaches to the HWRF over the next few years. Desmond said they are advocating to get that stakeholder process solidified through a statute. “As we try to stabilize the Harbors and Watercraft Revolving Fund going forward that the boaters have input into it and we think it’s a much better process,” said RBOC President Winston Bumpus. Bumpus said they would also like to have an economic impact assessment study done on boating in California. June 15 is the deadline for the legislature to pass a budget to the governor, who will need sign off on it before the next fiscal year begins on July 1. The provisions included in the budget can still be changed up until it is voted on. “We’re trying to preserve what the governor has offered and then accomplish more with those other provisions, especially that stakeholder process,” said Desmond.

UNITED NATIONS RELEASES SECOND WORLD OCEAN ASSESSMENT The assessment is the second of its kind and outlines the current state of the world’s oceans.

By: JORDAN B. DARLING INTERNATIONAL — A little over a month ago the United Nations released the second World Ocean Assessment, a 500-page document developed with the input of 300 experts that detail the environmental pressures affecting the world’s oceans. The report is a comprehensive study that builds on the first World Ocean Assessment released in 2015. The two studies outline the state of the world’s oceans, the relationship between the ocean and

humanity, and any other social and economic aspects. “The first World Ocean Assessment marked the first time that an assessment comprehensively covered all aspects of the marine environment, in so doing it provided a strong baseline on the state of our ocean,” said Juliette Babb-Riley, deputy permanent representative of Barbados to the UN, and co-chair of the second cycle of the regular process, in an introductory video posted by the UN. “The second world ocean assessment addresses the gaps identified in the first one as well as emerging trends since the first assessment.”

In an April 21 press release the UN outlined a few key takeaways from the report

SEAMAGAZINE.COM  JANUARY 2020  -51

REGIONAL NEWS specifically regarding the relationship between ocean science and technology and their critical role in restoring the ocean and the dangers that the ocean is currently facing. The report notes that sea-level rise is set at an alarming rate, that paired with increased storms and coastal urbanization has led to coastal erosion and flooding. There is a distinct rise in carbon dioxide emissions leading to acidification, ocean warming, which ocean heat has more than doubled since 1990, and deoxygenation of the oceans leading to an increase in ‘dead zones’ from 400 in 2008 to 700 in 2019. The report saw around 90 percent of mangrove, seagrass, and marsh plant species, and 31 percent of seabird species threatened with extinction. Environments are heavily affected by litter, marine life is being entangled in it, they are ingesting it, and the level of invasive species that are brought in by it. Human-mediated movements have in-

troduced roughly 2,000 marine non-indigenous species. Overfishing has created an estimated annual loss of $89.9 billion in net benefits, and approximately 15 percent of sandy beaches worldwide have seen an average of 1 meter of retreating shorelines in the past 33 years. Not all is lost, the press release noted that the increase in technology has brought along innovations with positive outcomes like the increased efficiency in energy generation. The report notes that technology has improved since 2015 leading to the discovery of more than 200 species of fish and 11,000 new invertebrate species like mollusks and crustaceans. The innovations have also led to the mitigation of some environmental pressures facing oceans, the creation of Marine Protected Areas, and in some regions the improved management of pollution and fisheries.

In the introduction video from the UN, Sylvia Earle, president and chair of Mission Blue, a world alliance dedicated to protecting the ocean, spoke about the importance of understanding the world’s oceans and the relationship they have with humanity. “The second World Ocean Assessment really is addressing this great gap in our understanding of this most important part of the planet,” said Earle in the UN’s introduction video. “This is the time to step back and dive in and really look at the problems and really look at the solutions and see how the interests of humankind are linked to the ocean.” The UN noted that this study was written before the COVID-19 pandemic. During the pandemic there was a brief relief on the world’s oceans, but the full implication of the pandemic is still being studied. For more information or to read the full report see the link, https://www. un.org/regularprocess/woa2launch.

QUICK ESCAPE By SEA STAFF

A LOOK BACK AT SAN JUAN ISLANDS SUMMER IS IN FULL SWING and COVID-19 restrictions have opened up to allow summer travel plans. The Sea is taking a look back to an article written by Stephanie Shibata detailing someone the best ways to spend your time in the San Juan Islands in the Pacific Northwest. Paradise in the Pacific Northwest is known as the San Juan Islands. Consisting of 172 islands, the area is home to spectacular scenery, wildlife and history. If that isn’t enough, the islands lie in the Olympic Mountain rain shadow, resulting in less than half the rain Seattle gets and an average of 247 days of sunshine a year. From April through September, approximately 90 orca whales make their home in the water surrounding the San Juans. The three main islands are San Juan, Orcas and Lopez. 1. SAN JUAN ISLAND
San Juan Island is the most diverse of the three, combining rocky shores and sandy beaches, prairie and pastureland, lakes and forest. On the east side of the island is the town of Friday Harbor, a quaint seaport of parks, restaurants, shops and galleries. This historic seaport in the Salish Sea is preserved by its maritime history. There are no traffic lights. The seaport is bustling with visitors, who can enjoy walking tours 56  SEAMAGAZINE.COM  AUGUST 2021

and visiting the plethora of art galleries, the whale museum, boutiques, and seaside restaurants and pubs. On the northwest side of the island is another port of entry known as Roche Harbor. Listed on the National Register of Historic Sites, it’s approximately 10 miles from Friday Harbor and will take you back in time to a quiet, relaxed pace as you stroll through the beautiful Victorian gardens and enjoy the ambiance of the historical buildings while watching some of the most spectacular sunsets in the Pacific Northwest. Roche Harbor is also a U.S. Customs Port of Entry for boaters wanting to cruise to and from Canada, which is less than five miles away. Roche Harbor has an airstrip, a marina, lodging, a grocery store, restaurants, a sculpture park, shopping, hiking trails and other activities. Where to Dock
Port of Friday Harbor Marina is located in the center of the island on the eastern shore. The 500-slip, full-service marina is within easy walking

distance to town. There are 150 guest slips able for boats of all sizes. The southern breakwaters are reserved for vessels over 45 feet in length. Roche Harbor Marina has been a popular boating destination for many years and accommodates vessels up to 160 feet. With 377, slips it’s a favorite location of many traveling dignitaries and has been featured in many movies and travel shows. The marina features the full-service Afterglow Spa offering treatments soothing to the soul, and body. Relax with a massage, or indulge in one of the many signature body treatments. Where to Eat
One of our favorites is a Friday Harbor institution. Herb’s Grill — the oldest tavern in town — provides a smoke-free environment. It has a comfortable beach bar feel with a ceiling decorated with orange life rings and inflatable beer paraphernalia. The menu includes such scrumptious items as the Hippie Burger, the Cow-Dipper and the Pile-O-Fries. Rocky Bay Café, another favorite in town, has a great selection of American breakfast and lunch favorites, but note that it closes early, at 2 p.m. The Roche Harbor village offers several

QUICK ESCAPE dining options, including McMillin’s Dining Room for fine dining at its best, overlooking the beautiful harbor and sunset. You can enjoy colorful cuisine at the Madrona Grill in the gazebo or on the waterfront deck. For family oriented dining, Lime Kiln Café will serve up a hearty breakfast and a number of lunch options. What to Do
In Friday Harbor the Whale Museum is a great place to learn more about orca whales and other whale species, along with porpoises, sea lions, seals, river otters and more than 250 species of birds, including bald eagles and other raptors. Listed on the National Register of Historical Sites, the Roche Harbor Hotel de Haro, built in 1886, has many rooms appointed with original antique pieces and offers the traveler an opportunity to step back in time and enjoy country ambiance and Old World charm. One of President Theodore Roosevelt’s favorite vacation spots, Roche Harbor continues to welcome visitors with its charm and sense of history. 2. ORCAS ISLAND
Orcas Island is considered to be the most spectacular of the San Juan Islands, and with more than 36,000 acres it is the largest. The horseshoe-shaped island is a magical mix of lush forest, rolling farmland, placid lakes and stunning mountains, making it a favorite for generations of visitors from all over the world. The population is widely spread out, adding to the feeling of peace and tranquility. Where to Dock
Deer Harbor Marina is a charming marina located in the heart of the San Juan Islands. The full-service facility offers numerous amenities and attractions that make it a major boating destination for both large and small vessels. Rosario Resort & Spa is located in beautiful Cascade Bay halfway up East Sound’s eastern shore. This historic resort and marina was originally Robert Moran’s estate and offers guest slips and mooring buoys. Also listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the resort features the 54-room Moran Mansion, a museum and restaurants. Original decorations and period construction including Tiffany accents contribute to its elegant ambiance. Where to Eat

Outdoor dining at the Lopez Islander Resort

Inn has been an island tradition since the 1920s. Begin the dining experience with homemade bread and soup or a salad with the special house dressing. Entrée selections include fresh local salmon or halibut, shellfish, steaks and chops or vegetarian specialties. The inn offers a variety of homemade desserts to finish the evening. Enjoy the deck dining area in the summer. What to Do
Morgan State Park on Orcas Island is a 5,252-acre park with five freshwater lakes and more than 30 miles of hiking trails. Atop 2,409-foot-high Mt. Constitution, the highest point in the San Juan Islands, there stands a stone observation tower built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1936. The tower provides panoramic views of the surrounding islands, the Cascade Mountains and Canada. 3. LOPEZ ISLAND
Lopez is the most rural and, according to local legend, the most friendly of the three major islands, covering 29 and a half square miles. The landscape blends forest with rolling farmlands and open space with shimmering vistas. Watch for bald eagles, herons, seals and otters. Don’t forget to wave at the passing motorists — a local custom. There’s a genuine spirit of community here. Where to Dock
The Lopez Islander is located on serene Fisherman Bay on the

west side of the island. The 60-slip marina has everything you need for a great stay. Where to Eat
A 15-minute stroll to Lopez Village will bring you to Holly B’s Bakery, a small bakery celebrating 40 years of love and butter. Just up the street is the Bay Café, serving American fare for lunch and dinner while overoverlooking the entrance of the Fisherman Bay and awesome sunsets. What to Do
Take advantage of the Islander’s outdoor pool, which offers a view of the bay, and the spa and wellness center. Rent a bicycle from Lopez Bicycle Works and explore the island, or visit the Lopez Historical Museum. TO THE WEB

GUEST EDITORIAL

IN MEMORIAM: MARGE BROOKSHIRE MISSION VIEJO — It is with great sadness we report that Marge Brookshire died unexpectedly on June 16, 2021. Marge was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and a well-known and respected member of the marine industry on the West Coast. Originally from Czechoslovakia, her family were refugees during WWII. And in 1946, Marge’s mother gave birth to her in a field in Austria while fleeing from the advancement of Russian troops. They migrated to Brooklyn, New York and in 1972 Marge moved to California where she went into advertising and sales. Marge was a big part of the SEA Magazine family where she worked in both production and sales from 1975 until 1995 and was considered “the face of SEA” before moving on to yacht financing. She was known to always bring cookies to her customers and was a long-time member of the California Yacht Brokers Association. Marge lost her oldest son Frank in 2019, after a two-year battle with ALS. And because of a fall on June 16, Marge suffered a concussion and left this world; just one week after celebrating her 56th wedding anniversary. Oscar Wilde said, “To live is the rarest thing in this world; most people just exist, that is all”. Our Marge really “lived”. You could see it in her eyes, her smile, and her voice. She will truly be missed.

Marge is survived by her husband Gary of 56 years, her son Bob and her grandchildren. A Celebration of Life was held on July 10th .
