HORIZON TRI-DECK FD92 THE FD92 MODEL IS the first tri-deck offering of the Cor D. Rover-designed Series. Quickly becoming one of the Series’ more popular designs, the fourth tri-deck build has recently launched. The latest FD92 build was commissioned by an experienced owner who has built and owned a variety of yachts. He was drawn to the FD92’s tri-deck configuration and beach club design and appreciated the yard’s willingness to customize to his vision. The yacht has five staterooms, demonstrating a sophisticated feel with a Mid-Century Modern touch. The main deck is configured in the traditional layout, with a large aft deck highlighted by a cozy conversation area and Hi/Lo foldable coffee table leading through fully opening doors into the spacious main salon. In the open salon, a day head is situated aft to starboard, faced by a sumptuous leather L-shaped sofa and large coffee table with ottoman storage. The owner worked with Horizon’s in-house design team to bring his style to the interior, which features dark walnut

flooring with teak wood in a satin finish as the main woods. This elegant combination complements the subtle Mid-Century Modern style found in the furniture and finishes. Forward off the main salon area, a large dining area featuring a convertible dining table is easily accessed by the Cambria-highlighted galley, which can be open or closed off from the salon via a door and a privacy screen. Floor-to-ceiling windows invite plenty of light into the salon, and sliding doors to either side allow for semi-al fresco dining in this space. A hallmark of the FD Series design, the master suite is situated forward on the main deck. This sophisticated space features plentiful closet space as well as a modern headliner treatment over the king-sized bed that faces the his-and-hers ensuite. Four additional en suite staterooms comprised of two mirrored VIP amidships, a convertible twin to port, and a VIP in the bow are
situated on the lower deck. Crew quarters for five are positioned aft of the engine room, with access to the spacious beach club fitted with a convertible settee/ sun pad that accesses the water via the Hi/ Lo swim platform. The FD92’s tri-deck design allows for multiple exterior spaces for entertaining and relaxing. On the bridge deck, the enclosed wheel-
house and sky lounge opens aft onto the boat deck that features a bar with three fixed stools and a Jacuzzi with its own counter area and barstools. The foredeck is outfitted with additional seating and lounging while the lightweight flybridge features a helm and comfortable L-shaped seating area. For more information contact www.horizonyacht.com

GOOD SCUPPERS EQUALS NO SCOOPERS “BACK WHEN,” AS THE old timers say way to often...wait a minute. Reminds me of a neat saying about the best part of aging is you can’t lose
the years that are behind you. That in itself makes great sense, and when you apply it to what seems to be a way of life as one ages (“Now, where did I put…?”) every day is a perfect analogy. And that’s how a boatyard comes alive at 5 p.m., with recollections that start when somebody sips something and says, “Back when…” This generally has to do with boats sinking, and the word “scupper,” which has two meanings according to Webster: one means “defeated.” And the other means a drain to allow water to sluice from a boat’s deck. That is not a good combination of definitions, as we learned. as offshore fishing boats, both were bought online in Florida a First, the sameness, then the weirdness. “Weekends were made day apart, and the second boat had an almost-new four-stroke 9.9 for Michelob” were ignored as Hank and I planned and practiced coming from Georgia. Both arrived at the same day at a preartwo jobs starting Monday, both involving removing lower horseranged marina. The first thing we noticed on both boats was that power two-stroke engines from both boats and on one, replacing the aft scuppers had scum lines about an inch under them, across the main power with a large V6 four stroke; the other was the the transom. The four strokes were about 100 pounds heavier than same, but the owner wanted a “kicker” installed on the currentwhat they replaced, and the one with the kicker—well, that gem ly-empty bracket. Now for a bit of weirdness - neither boat owner added another 125 pounds to port. Both boats would have scuppers knew the other; both boats approached 30’ in length. Both were that were about to be Webstered (defeated) because they wouldn’t custom built with cuddy cabins. Both were built in South Carolina

be able to drain. The end of summer was fast approaching and neither wanted to spend the time having the boatyard do the right thing, raising the scuppers. We did the next best thing and installed scupper-guards containing a ping-pong ball that would allow water to drain, but not enter through the scupper if the boat were too low. Two days later the jobs were finished, we were paid. The boats rode nicely, but the one with the kicker had the port ball actively opening and closing the scupper. Five days later National Weather Service (NWS) recorded 8 inches of rain overnight. I was hoping Hank would get the calls and I could go back to sleep. Each of us got one, and guess which boats? Uh-huh. He got the irate attorney, I got the irate retiree. The closer boat was in the harbor with only the radar dome showing above water. We quietly made our way twenty miles to the second boat which was on its side, blocking through-waterway movement. It was still raining. The good news was that the powerheads were still underwater. That was all the good news. We called our insurance carrier, knowing next year’s rates might do us in. 5 a.m.. We left a message. We hoped they didn’t throw up on the oak desk. We felt the ping-pong balls were the problem, and may leave us totally responsible. As we were struggling to raise the boat without a “kicker,” the owner said, “I’ll bet if the boat hadn’t been caught under the dock those ping-pong balls woulda worked.” Hank and I grinned at each other, finished raising the boat, got it on his trailer in his yard, and told him to wash everything down with fresh water until he ran out of water. We returned to the first boat to find a couple of watermen had prepaid some legal fees and raised the lawyer’s boat with their masts-with-cables and power winches. The first check we did was the automatic bilge pump, which was new, and working when launched. The auto-wire had been disconnected! Why? With all the rain forecast, he didn’t want the battery drawn down! The onslaught of rain had gone mostly into the cabin, and because of the kicker, and no spring line the boat rolled gently on its side, and down she went. We had just dodged bullet number two. Moral of this story, if a customer wants to rush things, give him one chance to understand why you say “NO!” Drain plugs are for small boat launch ramp stories. Scuppers are for big-boy toys and need all the respect that can be mustered.

MEXICO REPORT
By CAPT. PAT RAINS
THE WEST COAST’S CUBAR POWERBOAT RALLY IS BACK ON! HERE’S THE WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE, AND HOW IT’S BACK! THE WEST Coast’s Cruise Underway to Baja Rally powerboat rally was postponed for 2021, but it’s back on for 2022. This is the premier international powerboat cruise on the West Coast of North America. Registration is already open, and this year’s 50-boat roster is filling up fast. Here are the details, and if this sounds interesting, fill out an online application or at least get on the mailing list at https:// c uba r. sdyc .org/2022/12/01/ submit-your-interest/. The CUBAR is an organized 15-day cruise (October 30 to November 13) from San Diego to La Paz in the gorgeous Sea of Cortez. Staff arranges for the Mexico paperwork, fun sponsored parties, vineyard tours, and generous discounts on fuel, and slips at the six popular rest stops along its 95-mile route. Hosted by San Diego Yacht Club, the organizers are inviting the owners of 50 “qualified” powerboats to join this pleasant southbound cruise, now in its eighth rendition since 2007.
Since its inception in 2007, the primary purpose has been to help the many power boaters who’ve always wanted to cruise Mexico’s tropical waters, but who didn’t feel they had enough local knowledge or experience to voyage down the outside coast of Baja on their own. If you’ve looked for an opportunity to experience long-distance 14 SEAMAGAZINE.COM FEBRUARY/MARCH 2022

cruising to Mexico within the safety of an organized flotilla, well, this is it. You don’t have to head south on your own. CUBAR gets power boaters – newbies and old salts together – safely down Baja and into those balmier waters where cruising dreams flourish. Approximately300 power boaters have become Cubaristas since 2007, including those who’ve joined the semi-annual cruise multiple times. A secondary purpose is social. Participants in the 2022 CUBAR will get to know dozens of other likeminded boaters during the 15-day southbound cruise. After La Paz, boaters usually split into smaller informal groups to cruise farther into the Sea of Cortez, strike off across to the mainland or mosey down toward Barra de Navidad, Costa Rica, or the Panama Canal. Or they share the return voyage up Baja. Many life-long friendships have been formed on past CUBAR rallies. Finally, CUBAR is a charity event; excess proceeds benefit the Sea Scouts, Junior Sailing in Southern SEAMAGAZINE.COM FEBRUARY/MARCH 2022 15

California, and donations by participants to the people of Baja California, such as medical supplies to remote villages.
What do you mean by “qualified”?
Who goes on the CUBAR cruise? Everyone must have a valid passport, but nobody needs to be a member of any yacht club. Owners and/or their crew must be able to run the boat non-stop during the route’s three longer overnight legs, 16 SEAMAGAZINE.COM FEBRUARY/MARCH 2022
Courtesy CUBAR.org
All vessels must be designed for at least coastal cruising and be capable of safe overnight anchoring. Each boat will need to pass a comprehensive safety inspection prior to departure. The boat must carry enough diesel for a 450 n.m. fuel range at an 8-knot average speed. Those requirements are dictated by the route, which is mostly along the Pacific side of the Baja California Peninsula, famous for its world-class fishing and rugged beauty - but also for its lack of yacht services. That’s what makes the jump down Baja seem a bit daunting to newbies. But don’t worry. Nice marinas and yacht services are available at Ensenada, Los Cabos, and La Paz. Fuel will be available at those three stops and also at the Turtle Bay anchorage.

rotating helm duty between capable watchstanders. That means a crew of at least three, preferably four, and they should have at least some coastal-cruising experience. CUBAR staff accompanying the fleet includes professional captains, a medical doctor, mechanical technicians, a communications director, a weather wizard or a WX routing service, several Spanish speakers, and other support personnel, and old salts who have significant Mexico cruising experience. Participants should expect to live aboard (eat, sleep, steer) the whole way to La Paz, so assemble your crew list accordingly.
Wondering if you’re CUBAR capable? If you’re a newbie to Mexico cruising, you won’t be alone. The staff doesn’t hold your hand, but everyone stays in radio contact, travels in small groups, and meets up at all the rest stops. Many veteran “Cubaristas” are again signing up to participate in this 2022 cruise. For starters, you might post questions on our FB page at https:// www.facebook.com/groups/630473503755578 to exchange thoughts between first-timers and old salts. Or contact Cindy Sanborn, event coordinator, at cubar@sdyc.org To better prepare, registered participants are encouraged
to attend CUBAR’s professional training sessions at Training Resources Maritime Institute in San Diego; www.TRLMI.com Each day is packed with savvy seminars on medical care, provisioning, radio communications, safety, fishing, night cruising, customs, and immigration paperwork, and other relevant information. Lunch and snacks are provided. During training, we often launch a life raft just to demonstrate how it’s done, to see what’s really packed inside a coastal raft.
History of the CUBAR Odyssey Bruce Kessler, a circumnavigator and member of Del Rey Yacht Club, dreamed up and organized the first FUBAR (Fleet Underway to Baja Rally) in 2007 as a biennial cruise in conjunction with California Yacht Club and San Diego Yacht Club. In 2009 it was hosted by San Diego YC, in 2011 by Long Beach Yacht Club, and in 2013 by Newport Harbor Yacht Club. Since 2015, when the name was changed to CUBAR, it has been hosted indefinitely by San Diego Yacht Club.
What’s included and what does it cost? CUBAR’s entry fee covers the two-day Training Sessions Sept. 17-18. And more. SEAMAGAZINE.COM FEBRUARY/MARCH 2022 17

Each boat gets a 100-page Operations Manual ring notebook containing detailed charts of the cruise route, GPS waypoints, port contacts, anchorages, preparation details, and more. The 50-page Program is a yearbook of all participating boats and people, the events calendar, articles on marinas and Sea of Cortez cruise routes, etc. CUBAR helps with each boat’s Mexico customs and immigration paperwork processing. It provides a courtesy safety inspection of the vessel prior to departure. It hosts the Send-off Party on October 28 at San Diego Yacht Club, as well as welcome fiestas at Ensenada, San Jose del Cabo, and La Paz. It organizes fun group activities at all six of our R & R stops in Baja. You get cool CUBAR swag – tote bags, hats, shirts, burgees, guide-
books, etc. You’re invited to the CUBAR Reunion Party in April 2023, at Marina Puerto Escondido near Loreto in Mexico’s gorgeous Sea of Cortez. You gain the ability to cruise with 40-50 other powerboats, meet 200 or so new friends who have a passion for cruising, and enjoy the company and camaraderie of fellow Cubaristas. The CUBAR 2022 entry fee is $1,100. The experience you’ll have – priceless!

Where to find more information? If you’re interested in joining the 2022 CUBAR cruise, visit www.cubar.org Sign up to say you’re at least interested, to get updates when they’re released. Fill out an application, and when that’s accepted, then you can register to become a participant. ENTURA— A CRISP ocean breeze tugs at your outer layers, the sun reflects off the brilliant blue of the choppy waters bringing in just enough warmth to cut through the chill; the sound of water slaps the bottom of the boat, lulling you into a sense of peace.
The boat’s deck is full of anglers tossing comments back and forth, quick quips between new friends, and old stories told to a new audience. The excitement as a fish tugs the fishing line in front of you; the teamwork of pulling the damn thing up on the deck followed by crows of accomplishment as it takes at least two of you to hold up the prize for the waiting camera. A day out on the water with no cell service and the company of newfound friends can change your perspective or at least allow you peace of mind often out of reach ashore. Mission FISH, based in Ventura County, centers their mission on fishing, interacting, sharing, and healing. A mission founder Brian Barber holds near and dear. Barber, a United States Marine, founded SEAMAGAZINE.COM FEBRUARY/MARCH 2022 23
Mission FISH in 2015 after a fishing trip with a buddy inspired him to find a way to help his fellow veterans. “Mission Fish is a non-profit I started in 2015 as a way of me dealing with my PTSD, depression, and anxiety,” said Barber. “I went fishing one day and thought it was an amazing day on the water…And I thought, how could I do something like this for other veteran brothers and sisters going through a similar mindset as me, and that is when the idea of a non-profit started.” Barber, along with 12 other people dedicated to the cause, work together to host fishing trips for veterans, first responders, and gold star families; to date, Mission FISH has taken close to 2,000 veterans, active duty, first responders, and Gold-star family members fishing at no cost to them. Barber holds several events throughout the year, taking between 25 to 50 veterans out on the water for a day of fishing, interacting, sharing, and healing. Barber’s mission is to create a sense of comradery that so many find during their military service, out on the water with other veterans. “When I got out of the Marine Corps, I was lost,” said Barber. “The comradery that builds when you are inside the military, the comradery that you get is unlike any other,” said Barber. “I wanted to create that interaction amongst active duty, veterans, first responders, and gold star families, and let them know that even though your brother you were with is in New York or whatever in a different state or a different country, you can create that relationship now through fishing.” Many veterans will return to their home state after leaving the military. The separation can strain your relationships, and for many, there is a lack of support or understanding, and when suffering from PTSD, anxiety, or depression brought on by service, the connection to support network that has lived through the same experience or just having an activity can amazing things for the healing process. 24 SEAMAGAZINE.COM FEBRUARY/MARCH 2022
Mission FISH paired with Fishbrain, a popular mobile app for anglers, to study recreational fishing effects on veterans suffering from PTSD, depression, and anxiety. “The issue of PTSD amongst the veteran community is extensive,” said Lisa Kennelly, chief marketing officer at Fishbrain. “Between 11 - 20 percent of military personnel who served in Iraq suffer from PTSD, while it is estimated that 30 percent of veterans of the Vietnam War will suffer from PTSD at some point in their lifetime, too. There are numerous studies proving the meditative benefits of fishing, which is something we’ve heard from our users as well. With this in mind, we wanted to undertake a study to definitively ascertain which aspects of fishing prove beneficial to the veteran community and how we as a platform can help.” The study, launched on Nov. 11 to coincide with Veteran’s Day, received over 1,000 responses from veterans who have interacted with Mission FISH. Veterans received a survey asking them questions about their feelings on fishing and if they have felt a positive impact from the activity. SEAMAGAZINE.COM FEBRUARY/MARCH 2022 25

A Guidebook for Keeping Your Pet Safe on the Water STAFF EDITORIAL
N
OTHING IS BETTER than sharing an adventure with your best
animal friend; whether you are taking them down to the dock to hang out on the boat or sailing down the coast, it is
MAKE SURE THEY ARE COMFORTABLE ON THE BOAT A day on the water can be a lot of fun, but if you are not acclimated to a boat, it can also be stressful. That goes for our furry friends too. So, make sure before you load your pup up for a full day on the water, they are acclimated; one to your boat and 28 SEAMAGAZINE.COM FEBRUARY/MARCH 2022
always important to make sure your pet is as safe as you can make them. Here is a list of ways to keep your best adventure buddy safe while out on the water.
two to the motion of the water. A rocking boat is a new sensation for those without sea legs, so give your pet some time to adjust to the boat and maybe even create a “safe space” they can go to when they feel anxious that has some of their toys and maybe a favorite blanket.
SUNSCREEN, SKIN CANCER IS FOR EVERYONE The sun can be unkind to anyone, those UV rays are brutal for unprotected skin, and this goes for your pets too! Dogs and cats are susceptible to sunburns and skin cancer the same way we are. Protect them with a pet-friendly sunscreen, there are several options online, but you should consult with a veterinarian on the best sunscreen for your pet. Goodhousekeeping. com has a list of the five best sunscreens to protect your pet.
SAFETY FIRST, SUIT UP WITH A FLOTATION DEVICE One of the first rules in water safety is to make sure you have a life vest available. This rule applies to pets too! Add a layer of protection and provide your four-legged bestie with a pet-friendly flotation device. Devices are available on Amazon and websites like Chewy.com.
STOCK UP ON FOOD AND WATER It’s important to make sure your pup stays hydrated and well-fed, especially if you are planning on a trip longer than a couple of hours. Keep fresh water, a bag of food, and some treats available for your dog to make sure they are comfortable and having a good time. SEAMAGAZINE.COM FEBRUARY/MARCH 2022 29
PUPPY PROOFING! You puppy-proofed your home to make sure they stayed out of the cabinets and couldn’t eat anything that could bring them harm; well, the same goes for your boat. Keep fishing hooks, chemicals, and chewable equipment out of their reach. Nothing can ruin a boating trip more than having to take your pup to the emergency vet because they decided to chew on the fishing equipment and have a hook stuck in their jowls. Keep the equipment out of reach and the chemicals out of sight.
KEEP A LEASH OR A HARNESS HANDY. Dogs like to chase things. It is what it is and, having a leash on hand when you are docked or close to shore keeps them from getting the way while you are trying to dock but also keeps them on the boat instead of taking the grand leap to shore to chase whatever has just crossed their line of sight.
DECK SAFETY! Decks can be a dangerous place to be. Deck temperatures can put paw pads, and a slippery deck can lead to slips and falls. Make sure you are paying attention to your deck’s conditions. Providing puppy shoes and shady places can save your pets paw pads, and drying up slippery floors or lining them with non-slip surfaces can keep your pet from taking a tumble. 30 SEAMAGAZINE.COM FEBRUARY/MARCH 2022
BUG REPELLENT ENTERTAINMENT Just like any toddler or small child, dogs need to be entertained. Keep them busy with toys (preferably the kind that float) to avoid pet boredom that can lead to destructive behaviors like chewing.
A lot like having sunscreen on hand, it is important to have pet-friendly bug spray. Bug bites can be itchy could lead to infection. In addition, bugs like mosquitos carry diseases that could be harmful to your furry friend. Consult with a veterinarian on the best brand for your pet but most importantly, do not use human bug spray on your pets.
SEAMAGAZINE.COM FEBRUARY/MARCH 2022 31
A FIRST-AID KIT THAT IS PET FRIENDLY Emergencies happen, and you should always be prepared. Make sure to check that your first aid kit is stocked with essentials that will ultimately help you keep your pet safe. Seasickness medication, pet-friendly sunscreen and bug spray, gauze , and non-stick bandages can help you in a pinch. The American Kennel Club released a guide to help you build your kit. See https:// www.akc.org/expert-advice/health/ dog-first-aid-kit-essentials/ for more information.
TEMPERATURE CONTROL Our fur babies can overheat during a day out in the sun. This can lead to heatstroke and other dangerous ailments. To keep your dog cool, keep them hydrated and give them a shady place to cool down when the sun becomes too much. Pouring water on your dog to keep them cool may backfire and make them warmer, so don’t rely on it. Just make sure to keep an eye on them and give them a place to beat the heat, whether that is below deck or just under an awning.
HOW TO PULL UP A DOG OVERBOARD The worst-case scenario is that your pet falls overboard. Make sure you are not boating alone with your pet; having another person there to keep an eye on them can act as a preventative measure. But if the worst happens, circle back to your dog and cut the motor when you get close enough. Do not jump in the water after your dog, instead call them to you and then pull them out of the water when they get close enough. A lot of life jackets will have a handle on them to make it a bit easier.

REPAIRING YOUR BOAT IN THE WINTER MONTHS BY: MARINE GROUP BOAT WORKS
MOST BOAT OWNERS WOULD ASSUME that winter is the best for downtime and being off the water. Which in a sense it is, but this downtime should also be spent getting work done to your boat. Winter provides the perfect opportunity for vessels to get serviced, especially in San Diego and Cabo, because of their yearround good weather. Marine Group Boat Works (MBGW), a family-owned boatbuilding and repair company with locations in San Diego and Cabo, has had quite the busy refit season with notable superyachts and commercial vessels passing through to get geared up for their upcoming spring season. They have a unique advantage over the rest of the country in that they’re not only equipped with excellent weather, but they are located in easily accessed ports, have reputable relationships with superior vendors and subcontractors, and they themselves have the manpower to get the job done. Though the winter season is coming to a close, there are always some tips and tricks to keep in mind for your next yard period. Be sure to have your worklist ready to go when you call in to schedule an appointment. When you have your worklist detailed out, it provides an upfront labor expectation, and an opportunity to work out what needs to be ordered as soon as possible.
Schedule Early! Don’t put off scheduling your haul out. There is a lack of boatyards to meet the demands of the industry. Yards like MGBW book-up months in advance, so be prepared with a few available dates. That leads us to our next tip: have a flexible timeline. With the pandemic and the shortage of workers across the nation, parts being shipped have been delayed and labor needs to be planned efficiently. If you have a time constraint, that could incur more shipping costs for the parts and may cause a delay in your plans if an unexpected repair comes up. Work with your insurance to understand the yard’s terms and conditions. Have them read through and be sure you are fully covered for an easy transition into the yard. If you want to save some money on labor, have you or your crew do any and all work that can be done dockside at a marina. This will also shorten your time in the yard and get you back on the water sooner. MGBW has two locations (San Diego and Los Cabos) that can service your vessel year-round, or in the winter months if that is what suits you! Be sure to check out MGBW’s website at www. marinegroupbw.com, or give them a call at 619-427-6767, to start your haul-out scheduling. SEAMAGAZINE.COM FEBRUARY/MARCH 2022 33
YOUR ENGINE’S CHILLIN’ It’s that time of year again. Before the mercury dips below freezing, you need to winterize your engine or risk missing next year’s boating season BY BETH A. LEONARD
Fresh water expands in volume by about nine percent when it freezes and can push outward with a force of tens of thousands of pounds per square inch. An analysis of 10 years of freeze claims from the BoatU.S. Marine Insurance claim files found that more than three-quarters involved cracks in the engine block or the exhaust manifolds because water remained in the engine or cooling system during a hard freeze. Those claims come from all over the country, not just from the states that get snow every year. Unless you’re located in Hawaii or the Florida Keys, BoatU.S. recommends winterizing your engine if you’ll be laying up the boat for even a few weeks. It will minimize the chances that a sudden freeze will put you out of commission next season.
Engine Winterizing 101 At its most basic, winterizing means draining any water aboard or replacing it with enough of the right kind of antifreeze to protect against the lowest temperatures your boat might experience. No matter what kind of engine you have, there are four essential winterizing steps: Change the oil and oil filter. Residual acids and moisture left in the crankcase over the winter can pit bearings and other vital engine parts, so it’s important to change the oil just before laying up the boat. For best results, run the engine for a few minutes to lower the oil’s viscosity and pick up impurities. Shut off the engine, change the oil, and replace the filter. Restart the engine and run for about a minute to circulate the fresh oil to internal parts. While it’s running, check to make sure the oil filter isn’t leaking. Change the fuel filter and stabilize the fuel. Running the engine after this step ensures stabilized fuel reaches critical fuel system 34 SEAMAGAZINE.COM FEBRUARY/MARCH 2022
components. Replace the primary and secondary fuel filter(s) and/ or change the fuel filter canisters. Like the oil filter, the fuel filter should be checked for leaks while the engine is still running. If your boat runs on gasoline and your gasoline has ethanol in it (E10), the ethanol will absorb moisture over the winter. If it absorbs enough water, the ethanol can separate from the gasoline, creating a caustic mixture at the bottom of your tank that can damage the engine. This process, called phase separation, can only be completely prevented by emptying the tank. If that isn’t practical, add stabilizer to keep the gas from oxidizing over the winter, then fill the tank to 95-percent full to allow for expansion. A tank that’s almost full has less “lung capacity” to breath in moist air, so the ethanol should not be able to absorb enough moisture to separate. Diesel tanks should also be left full over the winter to minimize condensation and algae growth. Drain the water from the engine or use antifreeze. This is the part that seems most often to confuse owners, and mistakes in this step lead to the vast majority of the freeze claims in the BoatU.S. Marine Insurance files. Exactly how this is done varies from one type of engine to another, as described below. TIP: The oil will be much easier to remove if you let the engine warm up to operating temperature first.
Winterizing An Inboard Most boat engines these days are fresh-water-cooled. That means there are actually two systems – a raw-water side and a closed-loop system that contains a coolant/water mixture. The raw-water side cools the coolant/water mixture, which in turn cools the engine. Winterizing the fresh-water side simply involves making sure
its year-round permanent coolant is an adequate mixture of mixture to meet the manufacturer’s recommendations for your locality, typically a 50/50 mix with water. The coolant you use in the fresh-water system is not the same as what you’ll use on the raw-water side of the engine - ethylene glycol is effective but highly toxic. With the engine at room temperature, slowly remove the cap on the expansion tank and check the mixture with an antifreeze hydrometer. If the coolant is rusty or dirty, it needs to be drained and replaced with a fresh mixture. (Resist the temptation to use more than 50-percent coolant. An overly rich mixture will congeal, with 100-percent antifreeze turning to a solid gel at -8 degrees F.) The preferred technique for winterizing the raw-water cooling side of a fresh-water-cooled engine, circulating nontoxic antifreeze (propylene glycol) throughout the cooling system, protects the engine better than draining it and, assuming that the antifreeze you use also contains rust inhibitors, can actually extend engine life. It also is far less likely to result in freeze damage, as long as the engine is run long enough to circulate the antifreeze to every part of the cooling system. On some boats, it can be difficult to reach the intake hose for the engine, or to get it off the seacock. A variety of products have been designed to make getting antifreeze into the engine possible without undoing that hose. These include three-way valves that attach to the seacock or the sea strainer, funnels that fit inside the sea strainer, and reservoirs with hoses that can be run to the raw-water intake. Google “boat winterizing products” and you’ll find a selection. If you choose to use one of these, just be certain that the antifreeze reaches everything downstream of where you’re adding it, not just upstream. To winterize the engine with antifreeze the old-fashioned way, you’ll need a five-gallon bucket and enough antifreeze for your engine and related plumbing (at least two gallons). If your engine takes a lot of antifreeze, you might also need a helper to add antifreeze to the bucket as needed. Note that in raw-water-cooled engines a thermostat blocks water flow in some cooling passages until the engine heats up. To be thoroughly protected, raw-water-cooled engines must reach operating temperature and
the thermostat must be open before adding the antifreeze. One method is to remove the thermostat, a simple job on most engines. It can be left out for the winter, but don’t forget to reinstall it in the spring along with a new gasket. To circulate antifreeze through the engine: If the boat is in the water, close the intake seacock. Fill a five-gallon bucket with antifreeze. Have additional antifreeze handy if you know your boat takes more than that, or if you’ve never winterized before. You can use any leftovers in the boat’s plumbing systems. Remove the raw-water intake hose from the seacock (this is sometimes difficult, as hose clamps and hoses may be mechanically frozen in place) and insert the end in the bucket. Start the engine and run at idle until antifreeze discharges from the exhaust outlet for 30 seconds or more. For gasoline engines, fog the cylinders (see below). Shut off the engine and secure the intake hose back on the seacock. In addition to the bucket and the antifreeze, for gasoline engines you’ll also need a can of engine fogging fluid or light motor oil, some plastic sheeting, and duct tape. SEAMAGAZINE.COM FEBRUARY/MARCH 2022 35
Winterizing Outboards If a fuel valve is installed, turn it off about halfway through the process to run the carburetor dry. For the last 10 seconds or so of engine operation, spray the fogging fluid into the flame arrester on the carburetor. Light oil can be trickled down the carburetor if fogging fluid isn’t available. This may stall the engine, which is OK. Finally, wrap duct tape around the flame arrester and cover the top of the engine with plastic after it has cooled. This helps prevent corrosion from forming on internal engine parts. Attach a tag somewhere as a reminder about the duct tape, which will prevent the engine from starting next spring. Note that diesel engines don’t need to be fogged. TIP: Use only nontoxic antifreeze (propylene glycol) everywhere except in the fresh-water side of the engine.
Winterizing Sterndrives There are different types of sterndrives, so check your manual for winterizing specifics. Some inboard/outboard (I/O) engines take in cooling water from a thru-hull in the engine compartment, and some take it in through the outdrive. With I/Os that use a thru-hull, the outdrive will be protected once the engine has had antifreeze run through it because the antifreeze also runs through the outdrive. Other models may require the use of “muffs” to first flush and then run antifreeze through the drive. For those drives, warm up the engine with the muffs, then use a five-gallon bucket of antifreeze plumbed to the muffs and run the engine until it’s all been run through. Afterward, all outdrives should be stored in the down position to prevent water from entering the exhaust hub of the propeller. In cold weather, any accumulated water in the outdrive can freeze and ice may expand and crack the housing. While not technically necessary for winterizing, it makes sense to drain and fill the outdrive oil now. It’s not difficult and will protect your outdrive from the effects of worn-out lube over the winter while letting you hit the water faster in the spring. Lower the outdrive as far as possible, and drain the oil by removing the lube drain/fill screw at the bottom and the vent plug screw at the top. Keep in mind that refilling your outdrive oil is counterintuitive: New oil must be pumped UP into the outdrive; never refill from the top port or vent hole. Pump fresh oil into the drive from the drain hole at the bottom until fluid appears out the vent hole at the top. Install the vent screw, which slows the lube from coming back out the drain, and then replace the drain/fill screw quickly. It’s a good idea to put new gaskets on the plugs. If your boat has a reservoir in the engine compartment, fill it also. Outdrives are expensive and have become a frequent target for thieves. Even if the boat is kept in your driveway, consider taking the outdrive off and storing it in your garage or basement for the winter. TIP: Heaters are not a good alternative to winterizing – if the electricity goes out, your engine is left unprotected, and a fault in the heater, cord, or electrical system could cause a fire.
36 SEAMAGAZINE.COM FEBRUARY/MARCH 2022
Consult your engine owner’s manual or service manual before you begin. Today’s engines (especially four-stroke and direct-injected two-stroke outboards) may have special winterizing, flushing, and maintenance instructions, so follow them closely. For example, Evinrude’s E-Tec outboards feature a self-winterizing mode in the engine’s electronic programming. It’s simple to do by following the instructions in the winterizing section of the owner’s manual, yet if you don’t know about it, you might be tempted to try it the traditional way. If your engine is still under warranty, and you don’t winterize it according to the manufacturer’s instructions, you could easily void the warranty coverage. While winterizing procedures vary somewhat for older engines versus newer ones, and for two-stroke versus four-stroke outboards, the basics are the same. The engine’s gas tank must be filled and treated with stabilizers or drained completely. The engine should be flushed according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Sometimes, this doesn’t involve running the engine at all; newer engines have a garden hose fitting that allows for a quick flush without starting the engine. Check your manual for specifics. The engine’s lubricants (engine oil for four-stroke outboards, and lower-unit gear lube for all outboards) should be drained and refilled, and the fuel filters changed. Water or other contaminants must be flushed out and replaced with fresh lube before winter. Any water present in the gear case, for example, will sit on steel shafts and bearings over the winter, coating them with rust. Run the engine (use a small portable tank that has stabilizer mixed in if you’ve drained the main tank) to get the oil and lower unit lubricant warm before draining. This will make it flow easier and also get any contaminants in suspension so they drain instead of sitting inside. Change the oil filter when you change oil. After treating the fuel and running the engine for a few minutes, the engine should be “fogged” with a storage lubricant. This protects the internals (bearings, seals, and rotating surfaces) with a thin film of lubricant, which helps keep rust and corrosion away. With the engine running, inject fogging oil through the carburetors or electronic fuel injection (EFI) system air intakes in such a way as to “flood” the engine with oil until it begins to smoke, then continue fogging it until it stalls. Fogging can also be done with the engine shut down; in this case, the spark plugs are removed and the oil is sprayed into the cylinders, rotating the flywheel to distribute oil. Store the engine in the running (tilted-down) position; otherwise water that gets in through the hub can freeze and crack the lower unit housing. If possible, take smaller outboards home for safekeeping. – John Tiger This article was reprinted with permission from BoatU.S. Magazine, flagship publication of the membership organization Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS). PANAMA POSSE: THE RALLY THROUGH CENTRAL AMERICA
Thus began the idea for Panama Posse, and founder, Captain Dietmar, continued with it ever since. “By the time we all got to Panama, we ran into more and more sailors, and we wound up with 78 boats,” said Petutschnig. With Panama Posse, participants sail on their own schedule anywhere from Southern California and Annapolis via the Panama Canal. Panama Posse is a cruising rally for sailors traveling the waters of Central America and the Caribbean. Sailors can discover Central America, the Pacific, and the Western Caribbean waters alongside like-minded cruisers, adventures, and explorers. “Our main mission is really to help boat owners connect between the west coast and the east coast,” said Petutschnig. Panama Posse aims to make sailing in Central America and the Panama Canal easier for everyone. Easier means more transparency, getting participants discounts, having the best information and resources, and becoming part of a group that helps each other. A unique aspect that Panama Posse offers is that the participants are the guide for those who come after them. As a participant of Panama Posse and a fleet, you are entitled and expected by Panama Posse to let the company know if anything goes wrong with the vessel in front of you or the next. “So that’s really the core of it,” said Petutschnig. “We use everybody to kind of write a report, and we then email that report out to everyone; we put out updates. We have a communication tool that we love, which is an app called Line, and we have our own group on there. That is where people drop any kind of information they need or want, and then somebody can answer that. And we keep it kind of to ourselves– the only participants that speak are participants that have a boat, are on a 38 SEAMAGAZINE.COM FEBRUARY/MARCH 2022

MANZANILLO, MX— IN APRIL OF 2017, Captain Dietmar Petutschnig and his wife Suzanne were sitting around a poolside bar in Barra de Navidad, a town in Central America. “There were 15 other cruisers,” said Petutschnig. “There was a powerboat, a bunch of sailboats and catamarans, and were all sitting around the pool, and we said to each other, ‘where are you going?’ So, I said, well, I plan on going to Panama, and they said, ‘that sounds good; I will come with you.’ So, 15 hands went up at that pool bar in Barra de Navidad, and of course I opened my big mouth and said, ‘why don’t we call it the Panama Posse?’ and everyone said, ‘Perfect! Dietmar, you organize it! You’re good at this!’ and that was it.”

boat, or on their way.” Panama Posse is not like a traditional rally. There is no start date, assigned route, or timeline. “We say, ‘you go at your own pace,’ because ultimately, you’re going to go at your own pace anyhow, especially with a rally that goes through 16 or 17 countries, that’s 5500 miles, that’s over 500 anchorages,” said Petutschnig. Every participating vessel and crew goes at their own pace. “They have different interests and different things that they want to do along the way,” said Petutschnig. “Obviously, buddy boating happens, so two or three boats will say, ‘hey, we will buddy boat together!’ We don’t give them a schedule.” Panama Posse is always up-to-date with hurricane season to ensure that sailors are safe and not traveling during hurricane season.” The “set your own schedule” attitude that Panama Posse advocates for allows sailors to travel, explore, and experience their journey at their own pace without being confined to a timeline. “We’ve had one
vessel [complete their route] in like three and a half months, going super-fast,” said Petutschnig. “We had one boat that just barely made it through Panama in 4 years. So, it’s entirely up to the participant to go at their own pace, and if they see something they like- we’ve had some participants drop out and buy a house in Zihuatanejo. We really don’t rely on schedules because it’s up to the boat. Our whole philosophy is ‘no schedules.’” As participants venture further, their routes and priorities alter. Panama Posse’s flexibility allows sailors to add different marinas or countries to their roster. “We specialize in a little bit more of ‘off the beaten path’ locations that are primarily Spanish speaking locations,” said Petutschnig. Panama Posse’s routes hit over forty world heritage sites. The way the company operates lets all sailors know, if they want to visit one of the sites, then the past directions left by previous travelers will have left a road map to lead your boat there.

“These cultural and archeological sites are so important because we don’t just see the water, we don’t just fish, we actually explore the cultures and countries that we visit,” said Petutschnig. “As long as you are an adventurer if you will, or an explorer and you have that sense of discovery and wonder whether it’s culinary, whether you like to find the best mezcal in Mexico, or dive some of the most beautiful dive sites in the world, we try to bring those opportunities out.” Participants have organically taken on the service of informing Panama Posse of ‘must see’ locations; therefore, the next year or the next person that visits that location will know which sites sparked the most interest of travelers before. “All of these once-in-a-lifetime bucket list items are provided by the participants that explore it themselves. We encourage that,” said Petutschnig. The strong communication element that Panama Posse is so proud of is also functional when sailors require help or advice. “Let’s say you need an engine mechanic in Panama, now over the last five years, everybody has seen everybody; now we have the one we like, the one that is not going to rip you off and the one that actually does a good job,” said Petutschnig. “We found tour operators in Southern Mexico, which is phenomenal; they’ll work with the U.S. Coast Guard, so they work with us now. We know we have some of the best tour operators to take people to explore things. We just make the overall experience easier; we know the logistics that every boat has to deal with, and we make it as logistical as possible. We reduce the unknown aspect of it.” Participants can join the rally from any location, and the fleets often grow in size due to word of mouth. Panama Posse currently has 284 yachts on the water, spread across Central America. “Our rates are the lowest rates for all the rallies in the world,” said Petutschnig. “We charge about $250 to participate for the whole season, and with that, you now have access to all these resources that we’ve collected over time. Panama Posse also regularly communicates weather calls via the sailors that

report back. Their goal is for everybody to disclose their experiences on the water to help others learn. If trouble does arise, Panama Posse has a solution for that as well. “We have a nonprofit organization called Good Nautical, where we record most of the permanent data,” said Petutschnig. “Permanent data is basically like, ‘there is a rock here that’s not charted,’ or ‘here is the phone number to the marina.’” Dynamic data, such as a good taco truck that someone wants to recommend and might not always be there, goes in the chat room section. The chat room is an application that is active 24/7. So if travelers have a problem, they can communicate it directly through the app, and the surrounding groups typically spring into action. “Like most mariners, we help each other,”
said Petutschnig. Ultimately, the rule is that it is the mariner’s boat and, therefore, their responsibility to abide by maritime law, which Panama Posse operates under. Those who wish to participate in Panama Posse but don’t own a boat have the option to sign up online as a crew member. “We do have a crew tab on our website, and basically, people fill out that they want to be crew, and then participants who are interested in a crew can get information on that particular crew person that is interested. But that is not our core; our core is really to help people navigate,” said Petutschnig. SEATTLE BOAT SHOW CELEBRATES 75 YEARS!
The Seattle Boat Show (SBS) was first held in 1947, making 2022 its 75th anniversary! The SBS is the third largest show in North America and the largest on the west coast.
SEATTLE— THE SEATTLE BOAT SHOW announced all things Seattle Boat Show 2022. The event will sail into town on Feb. 4, 2022, and will be celebrating its 75th anniversary of what modestly began in 1947 with only 13 marine dealers pitching a tent along the shoreline of Lake Union. What started from humble beginnings has grown into one of the most important boat shows in the country. The 75th Anniversary show, which runs until Feb. 12, will feature 255 exhibitors with more than 800 new and brokerage boats, indoors at Lumen Field Event Center and on the water at Bell Harbor Marina and the latest in marine accessories and technology. George Harris, president of Northwest Marina Trade Association (NMTA) who produces the Seattle Boat Show will be spending his 23rd year with the boat show at the front gates, greeting and welcoming in attendees. “This will be my 23rd year with the trade association and it’s just really remarkable how important and what a big part this show is to boater and to the boating community,” said Harris. “My favorite place to be at the show is at the show entrances particularly right when we open every morning and we have these lines of people to come into the show and I love to hand out programs and talk to folks that are there, ‘where did you come from?’ ‘What are you looking for today?’ I like to think- it’s hard to know everything about everything, it’s such a big show.” Not only is the show a place to shop for the boat of one’s dreams, but the event has also always been a celebration of boating and a place for boaters to get together with friends, share boating memories, plan for summer adventures, and just have plain fun. Boat enthusiasts come from all over the nation to attend the show. According to Harris, of the attendees coming from Washington State, 52 percent of them are from outside of Seattle, and in 2020, the last time the show was in person, tickets were sold into every single state. The show was not immune to the COVID-19 pandemic, however, some good came from it. “This year you can basically attend the show online,” said Harris. “With all of our seminars and webinars- one of the things that we like to brag about is the education from our seminars. It has been a huge part of our show, so now that couple who lives in Indianapolis, who isn’t feeling up to traveling, can still attend our show from their home.” 40 SEAMAGAZINE.COM FEBRUARY/MARCH 2022

It’s no small effort on behalf of every person who contributes to putting on the show. This year there will be 91 webinars and seminars; 72 of the seminars are the classic 45-minute boating and fishing seminars, and 19 of them are two-hour, Boat Show University (BSU) webinars. Those presentations are coordinated by the Waggoner Cruising Guide, the Bible of the boating industry. All nine days of the show offer different content; however, you don’t have to attend every day to capitalize on that information because the show will keep online content available to attendees until May 15, 2022. The 75th show will be no different, with many promotions including: • Seventy-five years of show photos- A historical photo display documents the show’s travels from the Washington National Guard Armory to the Seattle Center Coliseum to the Kingdome, before dropping anchor at Seahawks Stadium & Exhibition Center (now Lumen Field Event Center) in 2000. The display includes classic promotions such as Boat Show Queen and Boat Show Family of the Year and a look back at boats and outfits throughout the years. • Classic Yacht Display- The display is courtesy of the Pacific Northwest Chapter of the Antique & Classic Boat Society. Boats on display include a 1948 20-foot custom Chris Craft, a 1955 Chris Craft Capri, and a very rare 1958-59 Chris Craft Silver. Fun fact: In 1959, Time Magazine described Chris Craft as the boat company most responsible for luring Americans into the world of boating. • Long Putt Challenge: Friday, Feb. 4 and Friday, Feb. 11Participants can take a break from boat or accessories shopping, grab a beverage, and put their putting skills to test at the Long Putt Challenge located inside the Boaters Lounge. All who attend will
take home a gift certificate to Flatstick Pub for a complimentary round. In addition, those that sink a putt will win a gift certificate of at least $50 and be entered into a raffle for the grand prize. • The U.S.S. Open- The inaugural Seattle Boat Show U.S.S. Open is a nine-hole putt-putt course which is an entertaining way to navigate the show. All mariners who complete the course will be entered to win raffle prizes. • Feb. 7 is Women’s Day! - On Feb. 7, women attend the show for free! They can enjoy a roster of seminars designed specifically for women by women boaters. It’s the perfect chance to meet, learn, and get inspired by some of the industry’s most experienced and talented women boaters. Visit Seattle Boat Show to print the complimentary pass. (Women are free at both locations. Seminars are at Lumen Field Event Center). •Feb. 10 is for Dogs on Deck! - A special day at Lumen Field Event Center is just for the furry first mates. Owners can make a custom dog tag at the on-site engraving machine and stop by the photo booth to have some fun with the props and enter to win the cover dog contest. The winning dog will be featured on the cover of a springtime issue of 48° North. In addition, those arriving after 5 p.m. for Yappy Hour can take home a dog life vest courtesy of Connelly Watersports (while supplies last). Dogs are welcome every day of the show at Bell Harbor. •Boating and fishing seminars- Entertaining and educational,
the seminars are one of the most popular features at the show. New to the 2022 show is an online factor. Attendees who can’t make all the in-person seminars, or wish to revisit a favorite, can watch the complete library of nine show days’ worth of boating and fishing seminars from the comfort of home for three months post-show. The $99 seminar ticket package includes a multi-day admission to the show worth a $36 value and a boatload of goodies, including a copy of the Waggoner Cruising Guide. Boat Show U classes will be offered via online webinars and are available to watch live (online only) during the show or on-demand until May 15, 2022, with a seminar package ticket. This feature is an incredible value added to the ticket as Boat Show U courses were previously $55 each. Ticket prices are $18 for adult admission, $36 for a 9-day pass, $18 for 2-for-1 Tuesday, and $99 for the seminar package. The seminar package includes all nine days of admission, a hard copy of the Waggoner Cruising Guide, a BOAT U.S. basic membership, and three months of access to the online seminar library post-show. Children 17 years old and younger get in free. For more information contact Lisa Samuelson, Samuelson Communications at lisa@ saueksoncom.com or at (206) 954-2574.
