Dear Members,
2022 has started off with a very hectic return to DPI, Animal Welfare and Emma Hurst matters being addressed. The following information and links will give members an opportunity to understand the issues our Dog World is dealing with at present.
The feedback received by the NSW Government from stakeholders in response to the DPI Animal Welfare Reform Discussion Paper has been used to develop the DRAFT Animal Welfare Bill 2022 (draft Bill). The DPI has now produced a Consultation Outcomes Report which provides an insight into the feedback received in an received in an aggregated format. The Report highlights a range of key issues raised during consultation feedback and provides an overview of the NSW Government’s response to these questions, issues or concerns. It also includes quantitative data collected as part of the online survey.
One of greatest concerns under Prohibited and Restricted procedures in the Animal Welfare Bill Public Consultation Draft Division 3 (22) Prohibited (e)- surgical artificial insemination.
The DPI Animal Welfare Reform Consultation Outcomes Report can be viewed at the following link: https://www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_ file/0006/1381812/NSW-Animal-Welfare-Reform-ConsultationOutcomes.pdf
The NSW Government has consulted the community and key stakeholder groups throughout the animal welfare reforms over the last two years. The release of the DRAFT Animal Welfare Bill 2022 can be viewed at the following link: https://www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_ file/0003/1381791/b2021-081-d09.pdf
This provides another opportunity for everyone to have their say on the new animal welfare laws before they are brought to Par liament. Submissions can be made to the NSW Parliament via the following link: https://www.parliament.nsw.gov.au/committees/inquiries/Pages/in quiry-details.aspx?pk=2853#tab-submissions
The DRAFT Animal Welfare Bill 2022, once passed through the Parliamentary process, will replace the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1979 (POCTAA).
Submissions close 13 February 2022.

It is with great sadness I announce the passing of long time member of DOGS NSW, Reg Young on Thursday, 16 December 2021, just a few weeks short of turning 101 years. Reg had a wonderful history with DOGS NSW and Dumbledeer Dalmations, as many of our members will remember him with his bus and Challenge Dog Supplies. To honour and remember Reg please turn to pages 8 and 9. Our thoughts are with his family at this sad time. Rest in peace Reg.
The 2021 Christmas Show, held by DOGS NSW Public Relations Committee, turned out to be quite the event, due to the extreme thunderstorm which totally disrupted proceedings. Despite this, everyone managed to enjoy themselves, particularly the children, even with General Specials being held in the Amenities Building due to the weather conditions. For more about the event, along with some very colourful images of the children, dressed for the occasion in Christmas gear, please turn to pages 10-12.

It is with much sadness that we advise that Reg Young passed away on Thursday, 16 December 2021, just a few weeks short of his 101st birthday. Many members will know of Dumbledeer Dalmatians and the love Reg had for the breed. Reg and his bus at dog shows and Challenge Dog Supplies were legendary. Our thoughts are with his wife Mary and their family at this sad time.
Reg Young was born on 10 January 1921 in Withycombe, England. He was one of six children and the second eldest. He was an active Mason and a member of the Semper Fidelis Masonic Lodge.
Reg was a radio operator in the British Royal Navy. He saw service on aircraft carriers and on shore. He served on anti-aircraft ship HMS Carlisle and the aircraft carrier HMS Indomitable. Reg was part of an emergency crew on ‘The Mighty Hood’ when it sailed to Scotland. On two occasions Reg served on ships which subsequently were lost. He was a crew member on one of the ships despatched to Tokyo Bay for the surrender ceremony in 1945.
Reg was discharged from the British Navy in Sydney Harbour. He was given the choice of free passage back to England or, his choice, Australian citizenship rights on a British Passport to remain in Australia. He secured a job with Amalgamated Wireless (Australasia) York Street Sydney and later Overseas Telecommunications Commission at La Perouse.
He married Mary Reilly on 12 March 1949 and they have three children: two sons, a daughter and five grand-daughters.
Following OTC employment Reg founded the Pet Shop at Brookvale.
The Dalmatian saga began when Reg bought Freckles (Dubrovnik Mescal) in 1954 from Irene Mackinolty (Beaudalla Dalmatians) and Cuth and Ruth Matthews of Dubrovnik Dalmatians, Chelsea Farm, Windsor Road, Baulkham Hills, which was later purchased by Harry Spira who built a vet hospital. Freckles’ pedigree boasted an imported sire and champion dam.
Not many households had cars back then, however, Reg owned a motorbike and much to the horror of the breeders, six weeks old Freckles was transported home in a brief case balanced on the bike’s petrol tank.
Freckles was shown in 1957/58 by Reg although (according to a family member) “Freckles (typical Dalmatian) did not listen to Reg.”
Dumbledeer Dalmatians began with the first litter from Freckles, sired by Fawdry Theodore, who was owned by Julie Lawson. When Reg registered the litter, he was unaware of kennel names. In choosing the prefix his mind travelled back to England and the little thatched cottage in which he was born “Dumbledeer Cottage”. This prefix was accepted and the litter was registered over the counter.
At the start, Reg was involved in showing. However, his direction changed as Mary became more involved. In the early 1960s Reg established a flourishing business in Brookvale selling fresh meat for cats and dogs.
As they were attending dog shows Reg grabbed the opportunity to sell dog accessories, displayed on a spotted frame named the “Dog House”.
This was the birth of Showaquipment, the show bus business. Showaquipment was established in Elanora Heights then moved Brookvale. What began as products being displayed on trestles, moved to a caravan fitted with shelving, then the blue van which transported display shelving, and finally into the refitted bus (of which there were two). Many exhibitors will fondly remember ‘the bus’ at Orchard Hills (see pictured left and above). Reg solved all problems from the orderly array of dog accessories.
In the mid 1960s the wholesale business, Challenge Dog Supplies, was established in Elanora Heights. Imported grooming products, leads, check chains (and more) were added to the range of goods sold. Training webbing leads for obedience clubs were created by Reg in club colours. Challenge subsequently moved to Dee Why, then Brookvale and subsequently to Collaroy, where it is operated by Mary and Reg’s son, Philip.
Reg retired at 98 years to enjoy his garden at Elanora.
chosen words encapsulating his beliefs are from Mark Twain.
“Do the right thing. It will gratify some people and astonish the rest.”
Rest in peace Reg

The 2021 Christmas Show, held on Saturday, 18 December, was conducted under the most difficult of circumstances that we, as a committee, has faced to date. With a fabulous entry of 819, this show was always going to be a late night, however, mother nature ensured that this was to be extended; she put on a thunderstorm of all thunderstorms, which led to judging being postponed in certain rings for the safety of everyone. It was, therefore, an easy decision to move General Specials into the Amenities Building. Thank you to those who decided to stay for judging and for those who went home, we totally understand your decision.
We must note here that neither the judges nor the stewards had the choice to leave and we thank them enormously for their efforts in circumstances that were trying, to say the least. We also were lucky enough to have Show Manager allow us the use of their online system, which made everyone’s life a little easier. Thank you Jeremy and to all at Show Manager.
Best in show was judged by Mrs Patricia Hall (NSW), who awarded Grant Gibson’s Beagle, Gibbgran Qeens Counsel and Runner Up Best in Show was awarded to Tiarne and Kim Perkiss’ Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, NZ.CH. SUP.CH. Tikimi Smooth Criminal. Congratulations to all the winners of the show. General Specials results can be found on page 12.

The committee would also like to extend a huge thank you to everyone who purchased tickets in our raffle; the support was outstanding, with all the funds raised going towards our future public events. We would also like to thank all those companies who supported this raffle with product or vouchers, making it by far the most profitable raffle for the committee to date. The Christmas Tree and Present could be seen walking around selling tickets and having a blast. Our wonderful committee member, Sue McFadden, organised this raffle and should be congratulated on her amazing effort.
We would also like to thank our volunteers, our “elf” who every year helps Santa make the presents, wrap and then delivers them for the kids; Lianne Rowles, we are very grateful for your continued support. Santa, the awesome John Dawson, who as always enjoyed the interaction with the kids and is amazed every year by the stories he hears from the kids. What amazing volunteers we have.
Congratulations to everyone who attended the event. The general atmosphere around the ring was one of fun, happiness and the overall excitement to be at a show again after all the lockdowns we have faced.
It is always the committee’s desire to make this show about the kids and we hope that once again we achieved this. We always have run numerous activities for the kids to participate in. The indoor activities this year were focused on games and a magician, whose tag line for the kids was “I’m Amazing!” We truly hope that each and every person who attended the event was made to feel amazing. The future of DOGS NSW is in good hands, as seen by the images of the “Tiny Tot” event!
Stay Safe, be kind and see you all next year.
Despite being no bigger than a grain of rice, tiny grass seeds can cause real problems for pups who like bounding through long summer grass.
Head vet at tails.com, Sean McCormack, explains what to do if you spot a grass seed wound on your dog, as well as the steps you can take to prevent it from happening in the first place.
Grass seed wounds can be incredibly painful and dangerous for your dog and are particularly prevalent during the summer months as long grass ‘goes to seed’. Your dog might love roaming through the long grass, but it can lead to problems should a seed get lodged underneath their skin.
The seeds are shaped like a dart, which means that any grass seed that gets caught between their toes, causing irritation and infection.
In rare cases, seeds have been known to burrow under the skin, travelling to other parts of the body. All dog breeds can be affected, especially if your pup likes bounding through long grass on their daily walks.
Prevention is always better than cure, and there are a few different ways you can reduce the risk of grass seed wounds in your pet this summer:
1. Avoid areas with long grass: If your dog loves running through long grassy areas, then you might prefer to stick to areas with shorter grass until the grass has fully seeded.
2. Groom regularly: If you have been walking through long grass, then a thorough brush after your walk could catch grass seeds before they get the chance to do any harm. Trimming long fur around paws, ears and armpits can prevent the seeds from catching onto the fur too.
3. A quick check: Give your dog a thorough pat down when you get home to make sure no seeds are hiding in your dog’s fur. If you spot anything, do not hesitate to give your vet a call and explain any issues you may have spotted. The earlier a grass seed problem is caught, the less damage it can do.
Depending on the affected body part, your dog might react in different ways. Look out for irritation, scratching, head shaking, limping or discharge from your pet’s eyes or nose.
Below, I have listed common signs and symptoms of grass seed problems in different areas of a dog’s body:
Grass seeds in your dog’s ears and eyes
• Head shaking and scratching along the floor
• Redness around the eyes
• Excessive tear production
Grass seeds in your dog’s paw
• Licking toes and paw pads
• Redness between toes
• Holding their paw off the ground
Grass seeds in dog’s nose
• Sneezing
• Discharge from either nostril
• Rubbing nose on the ground
Grass seeds under your dog’s skin
• Red lumps
• Licking at their skin
The best treatment for grass seed wounds in dogs is swift removal. For example, a grass seed issue in or around the eye can cause severe damage to the inner eye, which may need surgery if left untreated.
If the grass seed is close to the surface, you might be able to use tweezers to remove it, but it’s advised not to do this yourself as your vet will have had a lot of experience removing grass seeds. It’s essential to call them to seek advice as soon as you suspect a problem.
If the wound is deep or infected, the vet may need to sedate your dog to conduct a safe removal.

Recent Shows conducted at the DOGS NSW Complex have resulted in several exhibitors leaving their gazebos (damages and needing to be thrown out) on the grounds at the termina tion of the show.
This creates an expense of the DOGS NSW staff who could be using their resources to more ef fectively serve our members.
Please ensure to take ALL belongings with you when exiting the grounds. A reminder that the grounds are being monitored by CCTV.
Members and Affiliates are requested to ensure that when they EFT/direct debiting payments into the DOGS NSW Account that they include a reference, e.g. “invoice number”, “member renewal (mem no)”, “Club name levies”, “transfer (dog no.)” etc.
There have been times when there has been no reference to where or whom the money has come from and this makes it difficult for the Account Department to reconcile those accounts. Your assistance in using a reference for these payments would be greatly appreciated.
Members are required to ensure that when entering dogs, whether online or hard copy, that the correct name/s of the ownership of the dog is shown on the entry form. The correct name/s is that of the registered ownership of the particular dog and should be entered exactly as shown o that membership. It should be noted that failure to enter a dog correctly is a breach of Regulations Part II-Show, Section 1.7 (ii), and any such breach would result in the dog being disqualified.

The Field Spaniel is a medium-sized dog breed of spaniel type. They were originally developed to be all-black show dogs in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and were unpopular for work as a hunting dog. However, during the mid-20th century they were redeveloped as a longer-legged dog that was more suitable to be used for field work. 1.
Well into the 1800s, the several British spaniels used by hunters for flushing gamebirds were not classified by breed, as they are today. Rather, they were organised by size and job description. This changed late in the century, with the advent of dog shows in England. Suddenly, setting definite types and breeds became important, and a particular type of spaniel, born of Cocker, English Springer, and Sussex crosses, was designated as the Field Spaniel. These early Fields were an immediate hit in the show ring but also capable hunters. 2.
The breed’s success in the ring encouraged breeders to produce a showy Field Spaniel, exaggerating its long, low shape to extremes a “grotesque caricature of a spaniel,” as one commentator put it. Such short-sighted breeding practices negated the Field’s worth as a gundog and introduced health problems to the breed. The Field’s decline in popularity was as rapid as its rise, and the breed soon teetered on the brink of extinction. 2.
Still, the Field’s endearing qualities made it too good to dismiss. Dedicated fanciers of the 20th century worked to rehabilitate the Field. By the late 1960s, enthusiasts got back to basics and, with the re-introduction of Cocker and Springer blood, rebuilt the dog along its original lines. In the decades since, the Field Spaniel’s rise and fall and rise again has served as a cautionary tale for dog breeders. 2.
Well balanced, noble, upstanding sporting Spaniel built for activity and endurance. 3.
The Field Spaniel coat comes in solid colours of black and liver, or in roan. Tan points, white markings on the throat and the chest can be ticked or the same colour as the rest of the body. They have a moderately long single coat with no undercoat. Feathering of the fur appears on the chest, belly, ears and on the back of the legs. The coat is not as heavy as that of a Cocker Spaniel but requires grooming in order to prevent mats from appearing in the fur. 1.
Coat: Long, flat, glossy and silky in texture. Never curly, short or wiry. Dense and weatherproof. 3.
Sizes: Height: approx. 46 cms at the shoulders. Weight: 18-25 kg.3.
The Field Spaniel is an active and inquisitive breed and makes a good companion. However, if left alone and unoccupied for long periods of time, they may become bored and destructive. They are patient with children and like to stay close to their family.
They are suitable for dog agility and hunting and when socialised, they are good with other dogs. 2.
‘The sweet and sensitive Field Spaniel is famously docile, but vigorous and game for anything when at play or in the field.’
The sweet and sensitive Field Spaniel is famously docile, but vigorous and game for anything when at play or in the field. These close cousins to Cocker Spaniels and Springer Spaniels may be small in number, but their charm is enormous. Field Spaniels bear a family resemblance to Cocker, Springer, and Sussex spaniels. The distinctive glossy coat is either black, some shade of liver, or combinations of the two. The long, feathery ears frame a facial expression conveying a grave, gentle intelligence. Field Spaniels are sweet, sensitive souls with just enough independence to make life interesting. They are trustworthy with kids, tolerant of their fellow mammals, and responsive to training. 2.
The Field Spaniel is an intelligent problem-solver who is trainable and can excel at any game when properly motivated. These “thinking dogs” thrive best on clear communication and reward, with minimal correction. They require early socialisation and a family sensitive to their needs. Fields love their people and range from serious to clownish in attitude. Once they understand expectations, they are solid in training, and the breed excels in multiple canine sports and activities. Fields are an amazing, soft breed that are not for everyone, but owners feel their sometimes-oafish habits such as snoring, sloppy drinking, and perpetually shedding coats are well worth their companionship.
The lovely single coat is one of the breed’s most attractive features but requires regular care and maintenance. Weekly brushing and combing will keep the coat shiny and help to reduce shedding. Fields may need minimal trimming about the head and feet. The breed is not to be body clipped as some other spaniels. Their ears should be checked regularly for any signs of infection, and the teeth should be brushed often, using a toothpaste designed for dogs.
An active sporting breed, the Field possesses an energetic spirit that does best with regular exercise and mental stimulation. They are suitable for many canine sports and activities and enjoy brisk activity, as well as downtime at home with their families. Fields are found in a wide variety of lifestyles, from city to country, but do best when given challenges for both the mind and body. 2 .

As a result, the ADVANCE™ Sydney Royal Dog Show is world renowned and attracts overseas visitors from all corners of the globe, as well as a strong, social media audience.
We will be holding Obedience trials in the morning, on the first day of the show, Friday 8 April 2022, from 8:00am. We welcome Sue Fedoryschyn as our Chief Steward and Sue Brazier as our Assistant Chief Steward for Obedience in 2022. Conformation classes also commence from Friday afternoon on the 8 April 2022. There will be four New Zealand Judges on the panel for Conformation. We welcome Geraldine Gulbransen, Kelly Martin, Keith Brown and Stephen Meredith. Our Best in Show Judge this year is Lynn Butler from NSW. Sydney Royal will be hosting Breed Specialties again and we encourage our Exhibitors to view the timetable to see what breeds we’ll be hosting. In 2022 Junior Handler Classes and Sweepstake Classes will be held on Saturday 9 April 2022 and exciting Agility trials will be showcased on the last day of the Show, 19 April 2021. We welcome Chief Steward, Kate Parry-Rice, President of the Agility Dog Club for 2022.
Plan ahead! Some Exhibitors like to pack their car the night before: remember your crates and trolleys, benching chains, water and food bowls, chairs, grooming gear and bedding for the bench. You will receive an exhibitor manual along with your instructions relating to tickets and passes. Please ensure you read the manual, as it holds lots of key information, such as bench sizes and directions to the pavilion. A board no larger than 450mm x 150mm displaying the registered Kennel and/or the dog’s name and the official prize cards and ribbons for the current Show, may be placed over the benches. You may bring business cards and flyers to give to the general public with information relating to your specific breed in the pavilion. Exhibitors should
note that any prefix branded clothing is NOT to be worn outside the dog pavilion, in the judging rings or marshalling area. This includes jackets and vests, jewellery, wristbands and anything that displays a breeder’s prefix.
Please note that the pavilion does not open before 6.30am. Entry will not be granted prior to this time. Benching is any time between 6.30am and 9.00am. There is a drop off zone approximately 50 metres from the pavilion, from Gate 10. You can park in this area for up to ten minutes, drop off your dogs and equipment and then move your car to the car park.
Exhibitor parking will be located at P5A for all Exhibitors. P5B will not be accessible to Exhibitors for parking and no replacement tickets will be handed out if you enter the wrong parking lot. Your bench number appears on your Bench Slip, Confirmation of Entry slip. In 2022 your benchslip will NOT allow access to the site.
You will have received 2 Show Entry One Day tickets in your pack, for the handler and the driver of your vehicle. Once the driver moves the vehicle to the car park they will need the Show Entry One Day Ticket to gain access to the site. There is a shuttle bus every 10 minutes from the car park that drops you off at Gate 9. Many exhibitors like to walk one or more of the dogs back with them to give them a bit of exercise before benching. The walk from the carpark is approximately 600m. The Show Entry One Day Tickets are valid for any day, and for one day only. Cars must be moved to the designated exhibitor car park, once drop off is completed.
Please note that under no condition are dogs to be left in cars or trailers in the car park. Temperatures can climb into the high 30s in the car parks, which is fatal for dogs locked in vehicles. Security Staff will be patrolling and if any dogs are found to be in trailers or cars, Security Command, the Police, the RSPCA and the Domestic Animals Section will be notified and dogs will need to be removed from the precinct. This will be strictly enforced in 2022 and may result in exhibitors being refused entry to future Royal Shows
We have experienced and helpful Sydney Royal Stewards who work to make sure exhibitors have a stress free day. We welcome back Wayne Scott as our Chief Steward and Bruce Hickey as our Assistant Chief Steward. Please note that our Call Steward will give early notification that breeds are ready to be judged. If you are not at your bench, you may miss the Call Steward’s announcement.
You MUST bring your own grooming supplies and we encourage exhibitors to bring their own grooming tables. The Plush Puppy Grooming Area has dryers and standard grooming tables for exhibitors to use. We encourage exhibitors with large breeds to bring their own grooming tables, as these facilities are suitable for small and medium breeds only. Power points are limited in the benching areas, but exhibitors are able to groom at their bench. Please be mindful of other breeds nearby.
Please be aware that ALL exhibitors who attend the ADVANCE™ Sydney Royal Dog show are required to stay in the Pavilion until 5.00pm. This includes Best in Show Day. Fines will be handed out for anyone leaving early without permission from the Steward-in-Chief.
Due to the large number of breed entries that Sydney Royal receives, benching is programmed through the RAS computer system. It is done in alphabetical order per breed. In breeds with large numbers it is very difficult to move benching numbers, but if someone is willing to swap with you on the day this can usually be arranged on your judging day. Breeds are benched according to the size of the dog. Please contact us if you have multiple breeds on the same day and we will do our best to accommodate you. Dogs at the benches must never be left unattended. While it is unlikely someone will attempt to steal your dog, there are other risks if you aren’t there. The dog could get caught on its lead by jumping off the bench and there is the risk of an altercation with another dog. If you need to leave your bench, have a neighbour watch over your dog(s). To ensure the day runs smoothly we encourage exhibitors to have crates and trolleys at their benches, which will keep your dog secure. As long as other exhibitors can walk past your crates and trolleys, they can be in the benching area.
The bench area is restricted to exhibitors only and there is approximately one metre between the public walkway fencing and your benches. All valuable items including handbags, etc, should be out of sight or with you at all times. Exhibitors are asked to inform the Dog Office if they feel anyone is acting suspiciously or leaving items unattended. Lockers are located outside the Dog Pavilion and the Howie Café to secure valuables, if required. Our volunteers are located throughout the pavilion to assist, but in busy times they cannot be ‘everywhere’.
Hound & Working Dog Groups plus Hound and Working Dog Group Specials.
To protect the integrity of Australia’s largest dog, show the 2022 ADVANCE™ Sydney Royal Dog Show will once again have random drug testing in operation. If your dog is undergoing any treatment at all, you must fill out a Treatment Notification Form (TNF) and submit it to the dog office as soon as possible. It must be submitted prior to 8:30am on the day of Showing. There are a lot of prohibited substances that are tested for, some of which may be necessary for ongoing treatment of the dog and its welfare, if known in advance, the dog may be given permission to be exhibited by the Veterinary Committee who examine these forms. However, if there is no treatment form submitted and the dog is tested and found to be positive, it may result in disciplinary action, and you could lose your title, ribbons and prizes.
Sydney Royal prides itself on being the ‘social Royal’. Exhibitors are encouraged to socialise with other exhibitors and to catch up with friends for a bite to eat. The Howie Café is upstairs in the pavilion and there are varieties of vendors close to the pavilion selling many varieties of food! We ask that exhibitors are mindful that they are on exhibition to the general public and that they are sensible with alcohol and do not have bottles of alcohol on show. Sydney Royal has a strong RSA policy and does not promote drinking and driving. The assembly, lawn and seating
The DOGS NSW ‘Meet the Breed’ stand is one of our feature exhibits. It is located on the commercial walk and is in prime position, a great way to promote your breed. We ask that you help educate the general public on why your pedigreed and registered breed make great family pets. Please contact DOGS NSW on 9834 3022 to see how you can participate.
Our Commercial Stands will be available at the show again this year. If you visit the stands at the start of the day, before the crowds, you can have a chat with the commercial exhibitors. You’re sure to find something to buy!
2022 will see the lunchtime entertainment continue on the Howie Lawns and for the second year Search Dogs Sydney will activate the lawn in the evening. We will be holding a Dog Grooming competition again in the Dog Pavilion on Tuesday, 19 April 2022 and a new Pet related class for most Handsome Dog, Prettiest Bitch and Look-alike on Tuesday, 19 April 2022. Also, the Pet Pavilion located in Hall 3 on Riverina Avenue will be activated for its fifth year, where we will showcase our other Domestic Animals Competitions (Cats, Rabbits, Aviary Birds, Rats and Mice, Cavies (Guinea Pigs) and Reptiles). Along with Industry related Commercial exhibits, there will also be a “Feature a Pet” related entertainment arena which will showcase Dog and Pet related Entertainment.
Three traditional Grand Parades will be held in the main arena again in 2022. The first on Easter Saturday, 9th April at 4:00pm, the second on Monday, 11 April at 4:30pm, and the final on Saturday 16 April at 4:30pm.
These parades feature winning livestock from all the various competitions and dogs are included in this.
The show is a great place to catch up with friends and talk to other exhibitors and breeders. It may be crowded, so please be patient and always remember that the dogs are on show to the public. It’s a good opportunity to promote your breed or your kennel so breeders should take advantage of this as much as possible. I am sure you will have a great day and look forward to seeing everyone at the 2022 ADVANCE™ Sydney Royal Dog Show.
With the challenges of COVID-19, seeing dogs and owners spending more time together, new research from NexGard Spectra has shown that we aren’t just putting the spotlight on our health, but our pup’s health too.
Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health is behind the mission to better educate dog owners and encourage them to speak to their veterinarian about the dangers of the five main parasites groups to both dogs and people highlighting monthly preventative treatments as a strategy for protection.
New research1 by Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health, the manufacturer of NexGard SPECTRA®, highlights a gap in knowledge among Australian dog owners on the risks of canine parasites to both dogs and people.
Released in September 2021, the research found that while almost all owners (95%) reported parasite prevention is important; 41% were not aware of all five main parasite groups that can affect dogs (fleas, ticks, mites, heartworm and intestinal worms), and a high number of dog owners have not heard of the term ‘zoonosis’ and understand what it means (76%).
• Six in 10 (59%) dog owners are aware of all five main parasite groups.
• Eighty seven percent (87%) of owners are aware of fleas and ticks, 83% are aware of heartworm, 81% are aware of intestinal worms and 70% are aware of mites.
• Two in five (41%) dog owners have heard of the term ‘zoonosis’ (29% in 20202) and 24% understand what it means (18% in 2020).
• Whilst seven in ten (68%) dog owners are aware that administering monthly deworming treatments to dogs reduces the risk of transmission of zoonotic parasites to people, more than half (53%) of dog owners do not deworm their dog every month.
• More than three in five (69%) dog owners are aware that parasites can cause serious health issues if transmitted from their dog to them or their family.
Commenting on the results, Andrew Palmer, Head of Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health, said, “Whilst the results of our research were mixed, one message came through loud and clear parasite prevention is important to almost all (95%) dog owners.
“The majority of owners (73%) said veterinarians are the people they trust most to advise on their dog’s health and wellbeing, and as such, veterinary professionals have a pivotal role to play in educating owners on the dangers of parasites and zoonotic diseases and helping to promote both animal health and pet owner health.”
The Australian Companion Animal Zoonoses Advisory Panel, an initiative by Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health, was formed last year to review the latest research on zoonotic diseases in dogs and cats. The panel is comprised of seven veterinary and human infectious disease experts and has developed new guidelines which provide recommendations and strategies to reduce the risk of disease transmission from pets to people in the veterinary clinic and community setting.
Professor Rebecca Traub, Professor of Veterinary Parasitology at The University of Melbourne, and a member of the Australian Companion Animal Zoonoses Advisory Panel, explained, “Companion animals are a potential source of human disease.
“The key to minimising the risk is education on zoonotic disease prevention, including simple husbandry strategies such as appropriate hand hygiene, avoiding feeding pets raw meat diets, prompt removal of faeces from the environment, and year-round ecto- and endoparasite control, including monthly deworming,” she said.

Celebrating dogs who change, and sometimes even save, our lives
Celebratory, joyous and moving, this is a book about the profoundly healing, curative qualities of dogs and how we need dogs in our lives more than ever.
The dog-human bond is the most extraordinary cross-species friendship on the planet. Dogs give people so much: affection, companionship and pro found emotional support. Now, more than ever, we can see the clear health benefits of living with a dog by our side.
Drawing on science, research and in-depth personal interviews, Good Dog demonstrates how vastly a dog can improve our mental and physical health as well as our quality of life. Kate Leaver begins by telling the story of how she met her beloved rescue shih tzu, Bertie, and how powerfully he helps her through periods of depression. Then she meets 10 other remarkable dogs who’ve changed human lives from Missy the Pug, who helps 11 year old Cody live his best life despite his autism diagnosis, to Pip, who helps her teenage owner manage diabetes, and Jingles, who works with inmates in a prison. With each story, it becomes more and more obvious how profoundly dogs can support us, comfort us and even save our lives.
Celebratory, joyous and moving, this is a book for anyone who has ever loved a dog and known their love in return.
