Chairman's Report

Dear Members,

Well, we finally made it!

Back to some degree of normalcy. Trials and Shows are back on the map, albeit in a slightly altered format. By the time you get to read this, hopefully all the first few events and shows have gone off successfully. There may be a few initial teething issues, but these should be able to be ironed out fairly quickly.

There are many Shows and Trials lined up in October with the State Obedience Titles on fairly early, followed by many breed Specialties. While quite a few have cancelled, with the problems around getting interstate judges and lack of interstate entries, many will still be held. Further information and show lists should be available on the website.

All Show and Trial people need to stay aware of the ongoing COVID requirements and maintain social distancing, etc, through the running of any of the events. The safer we run these, the more likely we will be able to continue to hold events.

The NSW Department of Health is second to none on the tracking and tracing of cases and thanks to them, NSW has a very low transmission rate. If, however, you find yourself in a COVID-19 case location in NSW, please stay away from our events for 2 weeks, so we can all continue to indulge in our hobby safely. You need to stay aware and, if in doubt, please access the COVID -19 case locations in NSW by accessing the following link and scrolling down to Areas and Suburbs with increased testing: https://www.nsw.gov.au/covid-19/latest-newsand-updates#latest-covid-19-case-locations-in-nsw

The State Government has been to our Orchard Hills grounds and pegged out our new boundaries, so hopefully the perimeter fences should be going up very soon. When we have the map of the final area designations available, we will place these on the website.

The office is open again, although on restricted hours: 10am- 2pm daily. I would like to thank the office staff for all their hard work during this pandemic, in keeping everything running smoothly behind the scenes and dealing with most issues within a day. Many thanks!

DOGS NSW also has a new facility available on the website: ‘What breed best suits me?’ It is quite fun and allows a variation of suitable breeds once the questions are answered. Have fun and try it out. We are the only State with this facility, which has taken considerable time and effort to complete. My thanks to Vice President Lyn Brown and Operations Manager, Anthony Khamis, for all their efforts to develop this.

Editor's message

In this month’s edition we say a very sad farewell to one of the gundog community’s highly respected members, Jeff Griffiths. Jeff tragically passed away in July from a battle with pancreatic cancer, aged 62 years. He will be sorely missed in the obedience and gundog circles and we extend our sincere condolences to his wife, his family and those to whom he was close. Kirsty Blair, member of the Retrieving and Field Trial Committee has kindly written Jeff’s vale, (appearing page 8), which is a touching tribute to a much loved and humble man. He will be sorely missed.

Our four legged friends cannot let us know if there is a problem, so it is important to check them every now and again and to also take some preventative measures, particularly as far as dental hygiene is concerned. Just because there are no obvious signs of discomfort or pain, that doesn’t mean that dental issues aren’t present, so get your vet to do regular check-ups. Unhealthy gums and teeth goes beyond good dental hygiene, as it can affect your pet’s overall health and can even cause serious issues in your pet’s heart, liver and kidneys. Bow Wow Meow Pet Insurance have permitted us to feature one of their articles on dental hygiene, which is featured on pages 14 to 16, and describes the symptoms of dental disease, the different types and preventative actions to take.

Barbara Hodel is the President of the Pet Professional Guild Australia, a qualified and accredited professional dog trainer and the author of ‘How to love and survive your teenage dog,’ published July this year. Barbara has allowed DOGS NSW to print an extract, giving our members some further insight into the behaviour of teenage dogs, along with some positive and effective ways to handle teenage dogs during this unruly and at times, frustrating phase. The feature commences on page 10.

Have you ever wondered what your dog dreams about? An article written originally for Live Science discusses the scientific evidence which researchers have found, along with a comparison to humans dreams and sleeping patterns. Turn to page 17 to read further.

In news this month, we have discovered that some people have been using hand sanitiser on their dog’s paws, which is incredibly dangerous, as poisoning can occur, not only through absorption through the dog’s skin, but also if it is ingested. There are other concerns as well, so please do read the article which commences on page 7. A second news article, appearing on page 24, also talks about the results of a recent national survey of Australia’s Favourite pet names. You’ll be surprised with the outcomes.

The Bloodhound is October’s spotlight breed feature, which commences on page 20. I would like to share with you a quote which I recently found, and which sums up this great breed.

“The Bloodhound is one of the most misunderstood of all breeds. Its powerful appearance, extraordinary scenting ability and resolute determination have led to this aristocratic dog being called the “super-sleuth” among hounds a veritable detective’s detective. The most famous Bloodhound was “Nick Carter.” Called the greatest man-trailer in history, it brought about more than 600 convictions and holds the world’s record for following a trail 105 hours old that resulted in a confession. However, in spite of its formidable reputation, and the fantastic tales told about its tracking record, the Bloodhound is very gentle, affectionate and shy, companionable in temperment and very responsive to kindness. It’s fascinating background and docile nature is inspiring.”1.

People are putting hand sanitiser on their dog's paws

Here’s why you shouldn’t...

Mask, hand sanitiser, disinfectant wipes. This has become the new checklist for whenever people leave the house in the time of coronavirus. Recently however, an ever-expanding list of almost 90 hand sanitisers have come under scrutiny for containing methanol, a type of wood alcohol that can be toxic when absorbed through the skin. But it’s not just the type of hand sanitiser we’re using, it’s also how we’re using it that’s under scrutiny.

A new warning from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) suggests that pet owners are using the solution to clean their dogs’ paws.

“Attention Pet Owners: Do not use hand sanitiser to clean your pet’s paws. It can cause poisoning if absorbed through the skin. Hand sanitiser products can make your dog sick if eaten,” the FDA tweeted.

TODAY spoke with veterinarian Dr Marty Becker, the founder of Fear Free Happy Homes, a website dedicated to educating pet owners on safe practices in caring for their beloved animals.

The primary reason that Becker and other experts, including those at the FDA, agree hand sanitiser is potentially harmful as a cleaning agent on paws is because of its drying effects. As an alcohol-based product containing up to 95% alcohol, applying a hand sanitiser can actually be “strong enough to slough their foot pads,” Becker said. “Especially now with COVID, people take their dogs out, and so you get lots of issues with their foot pads and overheating and respiratory problems, he said. “What that sanitiser does is it can make it more likely to crack and to be more sensitive to having their foot pads burned when they’re out on walks.”

Once the foot pad cracks, Becker added that dangerous materials like tar, faeces and other debris can get trapped, leading to transmissible diseases such as leptospirosis.

A dog’s paw is as sensitive as a human hand and drying out the foot pad can cause painful cracks, similar to a cracked, dry heel. As a veterinarian, Becker said he often sees dogs with burned paws due to walking on hot concrete or asphalt. A good rule is, if the ground is too warm to place your palm down, it is too hot for your dog to walk upon.

The other concern is that ingesting hand sanitiser can be especially harmful for pets. However, Becker says that due to the bitterness of the solution, dogs and other pets would likely be reviled by the taste after a single lick. Even ingesting that small amount can cause digestive issues including vomiting and diarrhoea, Becker

noted. In the event that a dog or other pet has ingested too much hand sanitiser, they run the risk of ethyl alcohol poisoning and you should call your vet. According to PetMD*, there are some symptoms to look for in your pet:

• Drowsiness, lack of coordination or unconsciousness

• Involuntary urination or defecation

• Depression

• Increased excitement

• Slow reflexes

• Slowed breathing

How to wash your pet’s paws

While Becker advised against washing dogs’ paws with hand sanitiser, he did suggest numerous alternatives also backed by PetMD*.

“If you really thought about what was on your dog’s feet, it’d probably freak you out because they’re walking through their own faeces, animal faeces, stuff that’s on the sidewalk in the city,” Becker said. “I like people to clean their pet’s paws at least two to three times a week. If you’re walking them in a place that’s really dirty, it doesn’t hurt to wash, to clean them every day.”

For his own pets, Becker uses Rescue Animal Health Disinfectant Wipes, which he says is an easy way to clean each paw when your dog comes into the house after a long walk.

For mud and debris that perhaps a wipe simply cannot handle, PetMD* recommends washing the foot pads with a sink sprayer and some dog shampoo, checking for cuts and cleaning around the toes as important measures to keeping dogs healthy.

“I would just use any kind of mild hand soap or dish soap, it doesn’t matter, but it should be really diluted. Like Dawn is a good example. Dawn is used a lot because it cuts grease and loosens the tar on their feet,” Becker said.

Becker said stores sell what he likened to a beer koozie which you can fill with soapy, diluted water and stick your pets’ paw in to clean them. In the wintertime, PetMD suggests dog booties as a preventive measure against snow and salt getting on the paws.

“You don’t want to overreact and use hand sanitiser,” Becker said.

Jeff Griffiths

5 June 1958 - 19 July 2020

Pangryff Labrador Retrievers

Jeff Griffiths, a well-liked and respected member of the gundog community, passed away recently, aged 62 years, after a short and intense battle with pancreatic cancer.

Jeff joined the world of competitive dog sport in the late 1980s, when he bought his first Labrador Retriever. As was his nature, Jeff transitioned quietly and capably into volunteer roles within various dog clubs, balancing the training and trialling of his own dog with his service to the dog community.

Jeff was a longstanding obedience instructor and committee member for the Springwood and Blue Mountains Dog Training Clubs. He was recognised as one of their most experienced and knowledgeable members and as someone who was admired for his easy-going and relaxed competence.

Jeff was a passionate supporter of retrieving trials for gundogs and actively promoted the sport for over 30 years. He was treasurer for the Gundog Society for over 20 years, trial secretary for the Labrador Retriever Club, a RATG and retrieving trial judge, member, and more recently Chair of the NSW Retrieving and Field Trial Committee. Many DOGS NSW members would remember Jeff’s informative gundog training articles in the monthly journal and, more broadly, his coordination of gundog demonstrations at the annual Dogs on Show event.

Jeff encouraged and mentored a number of the state’s aspiring retrieving trial judges. His unflappable and pragmatic personality, coupled with the depth of his knowledge, helped us interpret and apply the rules in a practical way. I’m sure we all very much benefited from Jeff’s successful career as a school teacher and careers adviser.

Along with his wife Carol, Jeff actively competed in trials with their Labradors, achieving many titles across retrieving and obedience. Over the years their dogs also graced the stage and screen, starring in TV advertisements, the stage show “Annie”, and the movie “Superman Returns”, amongst many others.

Those who knew Jeff will remember and appreciate his enduring and selfless service to our community. He was often (ok, always)

late and even his friends from other spheres have laughingly acknowledged the existence of “Jeff Time”. Jeff’s dry sense of humour and repertoire of “dad jokes” made him a pleasant and welcome companion around the campfire, and his fairness and integrity made him a popular and well respected judge.

It is perhaps a rare person that ascends to leadership without ambition, ego or motive. But this was Jeff. Ever humble and selfdeprecating, even as he was recognised and awarded in both his professional career and our hobby. A deep thinker and reflector who would question himself before others. A kind and generous giver of himself.

If Jeff felt pride he was very good at keeping it to himself. Except when it came to one thing: Jeff adored his family and you could feel the warmth and light of his pride in them when he spoke about Carol, their two daughters and their grandson.

A very private person, Jeff did not share the seriousness of his illness beyond his very close friends and family. It was with shock and immense sadness that our close-knit community struggled o absorb the news of his loss. And even as we grieve, we feel keenly the pain and loss of his family, for whom the last ten months have already been so heartbreaking. Together we extend our deepest, heartfelt condolences to Carol and family at this very difficult time

It’s hard to imagine our world without Jeff in it. It’s impossible to consider that his shoes could ever be filled.

Rest easy, our friend. We will miss you always.

How to love and suRvive your teenage dog .... and keep your sanity!

AN EXTRACT FROM BARBARA HODEL’S LATEST BOOK

The teenage phase is a challenging time for the humans, the breeders and the dogs.

Most new dog guardians find puppyhood challenging, but they are getting the support of their breeder and are hopefully attending a good puppy preschool class. There is also a lot of good information available on how to deal with the puppy stage challenges, small dog, small problems. But once the cute pup turns into an adolescent delinquent, things can start to fall apart. Humans are often surprised at the change in their puppy, as almost overnight they seem to turn into unruly teenagers.

Humans are ill prepared for the challenges of a teenage dog: The emotional response and over the top reaction to some stimuli, forgotten training, increased exercise requirements, need for more mental stimulation and ongoing socialisation.

Dogs enter the teenage phase around 7 to 12 months and reach social maturity between 24 and 36 months. Smaller breeds and working dogs become teenagers earlier and mature earlier, too. Larger breeds and specifically gundogs, enter the teenage phase later and mature later.

This is the time when breeders might get a phone call from their clients asking for help. It is important to give sound advice as this is the time when dogs might be returned, end up in pounds and shelters or spend their days lonely in the backyard.

It does not have to be like this! We need to understand that all beings, humans and animals, need to go through the teenage phase to reach the stability of adulthood. More and more research is available on the brain function of dogs and we can assume that like in humans, parts of the brain mature at different rates. The more basic functions at the back of the brain mature first, whereas the parts in the brain responsible for controlling impulse or planning mature later. Emotional responses, especially the urgency and intensity of the emotional reaction, are affected during this time. We can see this when a teenage dog gets spooked by a man in a fluoro vest, or a backpack on the ground, they just keep lunging and barking and seem unable to assess the situation correctly or calmly. An older dog, once they realise it is a human or an inanimate object on the floor, will just walk off and calm down.

The teenage dogs do not do it on purpose but their brain, to put it casually, is still under construction. They are having a hard time to make good and calm decisions and need our help! Think of teenage dogs as the P platers of the dog world.

10 www.dogsnsw.org.au FEATURE

These young dogs now spend more and more time at home in the backyard because they are too boisterous to walk, they pull like freight trains, do not come back when called and jump on visitors and their humans. They have forgotten their training and have selective hearing. They also have gotten into a few run-ins with other dogs at the off-leash park. They now become unemployed and will soon be self-employed: meaning they dig up the backyard, eat the pool lights and bark at anything that moves. It is downhill from there and it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Their social skills deteriorate further and their world becomes very small. They meet the same people and dogs. Because they have stopped interacting with new people or dogs, they ‘forget’ how to deal with new situations or might get scared. Scared dogs are dogs who react inappropriately, or show aggression towards unknown dogs or people.

This pattern can be fatal! Behavioural problems are one of the main reasons for euthanasia of young dogs and surrender to shelters.

• Keep socialising

While early socialisation is important it does not stop with a puppy preschool, or at 16 weeks. Teenage dogs need to be socialised on an ongoing basis. They need to meet new people and dogs, go to new places and have new and positive experiences. Socialisation is not just exposure; it is creating positive associations!

• Attend a teenage dog training class

Attending a well-run class for teenage dogs with a force free qualified trainer helps with ongoing socialisation, provides support and guardians may realise that they are not alone.

• Find a balance between mental and physical stimulation

Teaching them something new on an ongoing basis, such as tricks or a brush up on obedience skills is a good start. Using part of their food for enrichment in food dispensing toys, recycle plastic bottles, pizza boxes, paper rolls, etc helps, too. Or, if so inclined, why not take up a dog sport: Agility, Obedience, Rally O, Nose Work, Fly Ball or Nose Work.

DOGS NSW ۔ October 2020 11
But there are positive and effective ways of dealing with dogs during their teenage phase:

• Keep an open line of communication

Dogs do not speak English, but they communicate with the ones who listen, or more accurately, watch. They communicate with body language. While most of us will see when our dogs get really upset, we often miss the early signs of stress and discomfort. If we see these signs, they do not need to lunge or bark. The early stress signs have different names. I like to call them displacement behaviours, because it describes what we see: a normal behaviour displayed out of context. The main ones are lip licking, yawning, head turns, shake offs, intent sniffing. Dogs will lick their lips when we hold a treat in front of their nose, yawn when tired, turn their head when someone enters the room, shake off when wet and sniff if there is a new smell. However, if they do any of these when another dog or stranger approaches, they might be stressed. We should try to help them by increasing distance and reinforce them for looking at us or moving away calmly.

• Keep it positive

A classic is the couch. The dog is on the couch. The guardian first asks the dog to get off the couch, then ‘commands’ the dog to get off and then resorts to pulling the dog off, the dog growls or even snaps. Often this is the beginning of the end for a relationship.

Firstly, the dog is not on the couch because they plan on taking over the household and then the world. The dog is on the couch because it is the most comfortable place and they have not been taught to go to their bed. If the dog is not allowed on your couch, teaching a ‘go to bed cue’ is the first step. It is important that all family members are enforcing the same rules. Dogs do the wrong thing because they have not been trained properly, or the wrong things are reinforced. The best way to address unwanted behaviours is to teach an alternate behaviour out of context, in this case, go to bed, and then gradually bring it back to the problematic situation.

If necessary ‘interrupt’ (call their name) ‘redirect’ (ask for an incompatible behaviour, like sit instead of jumping) ‘reinforce’ (treat, praise, toy, interaction). This should be our go-to approach if something goes really wrong.

• Reward the effort

Despite all the bravado they are showing, young dogs are insecure. We need to acknowledge the effort and reinforce all the good things instead of focusing on the bad stuff.

• Let them make choices if safe and possible

A lot of dogs are not going to the off-leash park anymore because they got into altercations with another dog. If no one was hurt, the dog is not aggressive, they just need more socialisation.

Teaching a reliable recall is the first step we need to take, then we need to manage the environment. This means going to the park when it is not too busy and match our dog with suitable play mates or organise play dates. Hopefully, the guardians have attended a good puppy preschool that allowed for off leash interaction and are able to read body language and good play. Good play ebbs and flows, roles are reversed, the activities shift, there are pauses and invitations to play are frequent (play bow, eye flashing, lifted paws etc). If it gets too rough, we call the dogs back to us, asked them to sit to calm things down and start again. If a dog shows aggression seek professional help.

Maintaining your pets’ dental hygiene

Reproduced with permission of Bow Wow Meow Pet Insurance

Did you know that pet dental issues are on the rise?

According to the Australian and American Veterinary Dental Societies, 80% of dogs and 70% of cats are likely to develop dental disease by the age of three!

Dental health issues in pets typically remain undiagnosed and untreated for a long time. An animal’s survival instinct is very strong, and they will often keep chewing bones and eating their food without showing any obvious symptoms of pain.

Just because there are no obvious signs of discomfort or pain, doesn’t mean that dental issues aren’t present. By the time the symptoms are so obvious that we notice them, the dental disease is typically quite advanced.

Having dental problems goes far beyond oral hygiene. Unhealthy gums and teeth can affect your pet’s overall health and can even cause serious issues in your pet’s heart, liver and kidneys.

Symptoms of dental disease in pets

Paying attention to your dog’s and cat’s dental health is as important as your own. Look out for these common symptoms of dental disease:-

• Bad breath

• Excessive salivation / drooling

• Change in eating / chewing habits (especially in cats), difficulty chewing their food or eating in general

• Tooth discolouration

Some of the most common dental conditions that affect pets are:

• Dental disease – e.g. periodontitis, tooth infection/cavity/abscess

• Oral trauma/ fractured tooth – this often happens through accidents such as eating bones that are too hard, getting caught somewhere, dog fights.

• Gingivitis – This is a common and mild form of gum disease (periodontal disease). It causes irritation, redness and swelling of your pet’s gingiva, the part of the gum around the base of your teeth. If untreated, gingivitis can lead to a much more serious gum disease called periodontitis and tooth loss.

• Oral tumours – These tumours should not be ignored. Oral tumours can be found in the dog’s lips, tongue, gums and lymph regions surrounding the mouth.

• Deciduous teeth (and complications thereof) – These are a puppy or kitten’s baby teeth. Puppies have 28 baby teeth and adult dogs have 42, whilst kittens have 26 baby teeth and adult cats have 30 permanent teeth.

• Feline tooth resorption This is a common and painful condition that affects over 50% of cats. Parts of the tooth close to the gums erode and eventually the tooth becomes irreparably destroyed. The exact cause of this condition is unknown.

• Feline ulcerative stomatitis This condition is a severe and very painful inflammation of a cat’s mouth and gums. In the majority of cases it causes ulcers in the cat’s mouth, involving lips, tongue, gums and the back of the throat.

So how should you take care of your pet’s dental hygiene?

Brushing their teeth regularly (daily or at least a few times a week) is probably the best way to do so. There are tooth brushes and toothpaste developed specifically for pets and it is recommended to use them and not human toothpaste or brushes (electrical human tooth brushes are also not recommended).

If you struggle brushing your pet’s teeth, we highly recommend appropriate items for them to chew on. Suitable bones and dental chews can help maintaining your pet’s dental health.

Be careful though with very hard bones that can injure your pet’s teeth, and plastic chews where your pet might ingest parts of the plastic. Over the years it has also been recommended that dry food (kibbles) is more helpful in keeping your pet’s teeth clean than tinned wet food.

Another good way to support your pet’s dental health is via regular dental check-ups and teeth cleaning. The same way as you get your teeth checked and professionally cleaned on a regular basis, this can be the way to go if you do not brush your pet’s teeth. It is recommended to do this every 12-18 months.

In Summary

Dental issues in pets are just as common as they are in people who neglect their dental care. Unlike humans however, pets can’t communicate when they are experiencing dental discomfort or pain. By the time you know there is a dental issue, the condition may already be very advanced. Dental care and hygiene is therefore of utmost importance, to keep your cat or dog’s teeth bright and shiny and to ensure their overall good health.

What do dogs dream about?

When Fido’s legs twitch in his sleep, is he really dreaming of chasing rabbits?

Probably, researchers say. The “rabbits” part is up for debate, but the scientific evidence strongly suggests that not only do dogs dream, but they likely dream about waking activities, much like humans do.

“Dogs do dream,” said Stanley Coren, a professor emeritus of psychology at the University of British Columbia and the author of “Do Dogs Dream? Nearly Everything Your Dog Wants You to Know” (Norton, 2012).

“Dogs sleep more than people do,” Coren told Live Science, “and they have a particular penchant for catnaps. But the structure of their sleep looks remarkably human: Like humans, dogs cycle through stages of wakefulness, rapid-eye-movement (REM) sleep and non-rapid-eye-movement sleep. Scientists reporting in the journal Physiological Behaviour in 1977 recorded the electrical activity of the brains of six pointer dogs for 24 hours, and found that the dogs spent 44 percent of their time alert, 21 percent drowsy and 12 percent in REM sleep. They also spent 23 percent of their time in the deepest stage of non-REM sleep, called slow-wave sleep.”

“People dream in both REM and non-REM sleep, but the dreams that most people remember are REM dreams. In this stage, dreams are memorable and often bizarre. Plus, people are more likely to awaken right after REM sleep than after non-REM sleep,” said Matthew Wilson, a cognitive scientist who researches learning and memory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. “By comparison, non-REM dreams are rather mundane,” Wilson told Live Science.

Resting rats

In 2001, Wilson and his colleagues were the first to find that rats dream, or, at least, their brains do the same thing people’s brains do during dreaming and to similar effect. First, the researchers recorded the activity of multiple neurons in the rats’ brains while they did repetitive maze tasks. Next, they recorded the same neurons during REM sleep.

In 44 percent of REM sleep episodes, the researchers found brain patterns that matched those that the rats had produced during their waking maze runs. The patterns lasted for minutes at a time and “played” at the same rate as they did when the rats were awake. In other words, the animals seemed to be reliving their waking activities in REM sleep, the researchers reported in 2001 in the journal Neuron.

The next year, Wilson’s group reported similar brain activity echoes of daily life in rats’ non-REM sleep. But in non-REM sleep, the brain-wave patterns were shorter and faster, instead of mimicking real time, and the patterns showed up only in naps right after the real-world activities.

FEATURE

Still, there’s evidence that these non-REM activity bursts are dreamlike for rats, just as similar brain activity is dreamlike (but forgettable) in humans. Wilson and his colleagues found that while these telltale neurons were firing in the hippocampus the wrinkly blob of brain at the base of the skull that’s linked to memory and learning neurons in their visual cortex were firing, too.

“They were ‘seeing’ what the hippocampus was dreaming about,” Wilson said.

Dreaming dogs

The finding that rats dream is a good indication that dreaming is common across mammals. In fact, non-REM sleep is seen in all vertebrates (animals with backbones) and may even extend to some invertebrates, like fruit flies. Thus, even flies may dream in some form, Wilson said.

The reason the dreamy brain patterns of REM and non-REM sleep are so common seems to have something to do with their role in learning and memory. Sleep boosts memory formation, and disrupted sleep can impede memory.

“Sleep ‘adds something’ to the process of learning and remembering,” Wilson said. “Patterns in non-REM sleep seem to suggest a sort of categorising of the day’s activities. REM sleep, on the other hand, may be an avenue for the brain to explore in a consequence-free environment.”

“The idea is that, in sleep, the brain is trying to find shortcuts or connections between things that you may have experienced but you just hadn’t put them together,” Wilson said. “The bizarre sleep imagery of REM dreams could be a manifestation of this deeper process.” he said.

But back to those snoozing Saint Bernards and Scottish Terriers. Dogs enter REM sleep about 20 minutes into a snooze session, and might stay there for 2 or 3 minutes. “An observant owner might notice the animal’s breathing become irregular,” Coren said. “In puppies and very old dogs, the muscles might twitch. In both dogs and humans, part of the brain stem called the pons is responsible for paralysing the large muscles during sleep, which keeps people and pets alike from acting out their dreams. The pons is underdeveloped in puppies and may not work as efficiently in old dogs,” Coren said, “which is why these pooches are more likely to twitch than dogs in their middle years (The same is true of very young and very old humans.).”

Studies in which the muscle-paralysing part of the pons has been temporarily deactivated are the only way to peek into doggy dreams. With the pons offline, dogs start to act out their dreams (in humans, this condition is called REM sleep disorder).

“What we’ve basically found is that dogs dream doggy things,” Coren said. “So, pointers will point at dream birds, and Dobermans will chase dream burglars. The dream pattern in dogs seems to be very similar to the dream pattern in humans.”

“For unknown reasons, the size of the dog may determine the size of the dream. Smaller dogs have more frequent but shorter dream periods,” Cohen said, “while large dogs have less frequent but longer dreams.”

“Dog sleep is similar to human sleep in other ways. Dogs probably have nightmares, just as humans do,” Cohen said. “They can also get narcolepsy, a disorder that causes the brain to fall into sudden sleep. In fact, research into a line of narcoleptic dogs at Stanford University unraveled the biochemistry behind the human form of the condition.”

“But dogs probably escape one common human sleep problem: sleep paralysis. In this condition, consciousness returns before the brain “switches on” the muscles again, so people awaken but can’t move. Sleep paralysis is often the result of sleep deprivation, which is a rare condition for dogs.” Coren said.

“You give a dog an opportunity, and he lies down and he closes his eyes,” he said.

Bloodhound

History

The Bloodhound possesses, in a most marked degree, every point and characteristic of those dogs which hunt together by scent (Sagaces). Of the scent hounds, the Bloodhound has the most size, the most power and the most skin. He is the ultimate trailing machine.

They have a history that extends back to the 7th century AD in Belgium and France. Today’s Bloodhounds are descended from those hounds, bred by Hubert, a 7th-century monk, who later became patron saint of hunters, and from hounds bred by other medieval noblemen who kept scent hounds as hunting dogs. Many strains, including hounds brought back to Europe by the Crusaders from the Holy Land, have blended to produce today’s gentle giants. It was not until the 16th century that the Bloodhound was used to track humans. The breed’s name was derived from the expression “blooded hound”, meaning a hound of pure breeding.

Appearance

The Bloodhound is very powerful and stands over more ground than is usual with hounds of other breeds. The skin should be surprisingly loose and velvety, especially around the head. The ears are long, low, and soft. The deep lip continues into loose folds of skin, the flews, which themselves merge into folds of dewlap under the jaw and neck. This excess skin, and the slobber that accumulates on it, helps to trap the scent particles. The pendulous ears, far longer than the muzzle, sweep the scent toward the large nostrils.

As the dog lowers its head, wrinkles will form over the eyes, yet as it looks up the skin slides smoothly rearward. This “superabundance” of skin also protects the eyes from rough vegetation and brambles. The skin easily stretches if snagged, pulling the offending branch along with it, until the skin is able to slide off and catch up with the dog. A wellmade bloodhound almost never suffers lacerations, no matter how rough its territory.

The skull is narrow, relatively flat at the sides, and sporting a pronounced occipital peak. Skull planes, viewed from either the side or from the top, ideally are parallel not divergent. The standard describes the expression as “noble and dignified, and characterised by solemnity, wisdom and power”. The weight of the skin pulls the eye rims into lozenge or diamond shapes and usually exposes varying amounts of pink haw.

A very powerful endurance dog, it can travel over great distances at a steady gait in pursuit of a trail.

The breed’s colours are black and tan, liver and tan, and red. A small amount of white is permissible on the chest, toes and tip of the tail.

Temperament

Bloodhounds are pack hounds and should be easy-going, affectionate and an extremely gentle hound. They can, however, be reserved with strangers.

The breed can be rather stubborn and Obedience training should be started early, practised regularly, and made as much fun as possible. The Bloodhound is easily distracted, and training should be kept short, especially whilst young. While it’s beautiful to watch the breed’s head go down and its tail go up, as it picks up a scent trail, it’s important to note it can be almost impossible to call a Bloodhound back.

Health

Although a fairly healthy breed, when bred responsibly, with a life span of eight to 12 years, the breed does have a few health issues that buyers should be aware of.

Eye problems such as Entropion and ectropion can be a problem for the breed and like most deep chested dogs, bloat can be a concern.

Hip and Elbow Dysplasia can affect the breed, and, as such, all reputable registered breeders should be health testing their breeding animals through the ANKC ORCHID scheme. Along with the hip and elbow testing, cardiac screening by a Cardiologist (echo preferred breed can be affected by SAS), should be carried out and DNA testing for DM (Degenerative Myelopathy).

Skin problems can also occur in the breed, due to the abundance of skin folds, so daily management is advised.

Maintenance

The coat is smooth, short, weatherproof and easily maintained. Regular baths, especially in the summer months, and weekly grooming with a rubber mitt, will keep your Bloodhound in good shape. Bloodhounds find having their nails trimmed particularly unpleasant, so it’s advised that they are done routinely each fortnight from a very early age, otherwise it can become quite problematic.

Activities that can help to keep your Hound fit and well, other than a regular daily walk, include swimming, fetch and nose works games, which the Bloodhound loves.

The Bloodhound does require some specific maintenance. Those long ears and deep folds need daily attention. Wearing a snood at meal times can assist with messy ears and with regular drying under the neck and dewlaps goes a long way to keeping fungal infections away.

Suitability

The Bloodhound is usually very good with children (care with toddlers as they can potentially knock them over) and other animals; however the breed is not for everyone. Youngsters can be extremely clumsy around the house and as an adult it can hurl slobber for metres, even reaching the ceiling. Bloodhounds require a fully fenced yard, with a minimum height of about 5ft, and regular daily exercise. The breed needs to be on-lead for any exercise taking place outside a secure area, as that wonderful nose it is known for, often leads to trouble.

Australia's Favourite Dog Names

Sydney, 30 June 2020: Mumma, the Great Dane cross, who was nameless for the first 8 years of her life, and a Jack Russell named Broccoli have been crowned as the owners of Australia’s favourite dog names, following a competition held by personalised pet service Paws N’ All.

Held earlier in June, as a means of encouraging people to share fun and uplifting stories about their furry friends in the face of COVID-19 and Australia’s first recession in 29 years, the competition asked dog parents to explain how their pup’s name came to be.

More than 650 entries poured in from across Australia, with eight finalists then being put to a public vote on Facebook to see who would win the title of best story and most original name.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, 1 year-old Broccoli took out the title for most original name, ahead of Rissole, Rumour and Aarli.

“After we had chosen Broccoli from the litter, my boyfriend and I were talking about food names like Oreo, Snickers & Cookie, common names. As a joke, my boyfriend said, ‘We could name him Broccoli.’ I replied, ‘we are not naming our dog Broccoli!’. Nothing ever topped it, so we just went with it,” his owner, Hunter Valley resident Jamie Krsul, explained.

Meanwhile, 10 year-old Mumma won with the highly emotive story behind her name:

“I rescued Mumma who had no name from an awful living situation with her 12 puppies. Her babies all found beautiful forever homes, but I couldn’t part with their gorgeous mum. When I had her desexed, the vet (guessing her age at 8 years) said based on her internal condition, she would have had at least 100 puppies,” her proud owner, Hannah Finlay from the NSW mid Nth Coast, said.

Both were elated to win the prize a three-month fully personalised subscription box from Paws N’ All, worth $194.85.

“I’m so excited to spoil Mumma with this amazing prize. She had a really hard start to life, and it is my mission to give her the greatest senior years,” Ms Finlay said.

Paws N’ All co-founder Adam Zuchetti said it was something of an emotional rollercoaster reading through all of the entries. “We’d be in stitches laughing at one story, and then the next one would be both really sad but also inspiring about a dog who escaped incredible cruelty or trauma, such as Mumma,” he said.

“While I naturally couldn’t vote in the competition, I did have a particular soft spot for the five year-old who wanted to name his puppy ‘Pizza Crust’ only to have his older brother trick him into thinking the name ‘Millie’ is French for ‘pizza crust’!”

Mr Zuchetti added that there were some amazing insights into where the names for our most loyal companions come from. “For instance, a surprising number of dogs are named after alcoholic beverages not only do us Aussies love a drink, but it seems we want to yell them across the dog park too!” he said. “Sports stars are another big source of inspiration, especially footy players.”

More information on the competition winners, as well as the stories of the six other finalists, can be found on Paws N’ All’s blog. W. https://www.pawsnall.com.au

Dogs understand what's written all over your face

Dogs are capable of understanding the emotions behind an expression on a human face. For example, if a dog turns its head to the left, it could be picking up that someone is angry, fearful or happy. If there is a look of surprise on a person’s face, dogs tend to turn their head to the right. The heart rates of dogs also go up when they see someone who is having a bad day, say Marcello Siniscalchi, Serenella d’Ingeo and Angelo Quaranta of the University of Bari Aldo Moro in Italy.1. The study in Springer’s journal, ‘Learning & Behaviour,’ is the latest to reveal just how connected dogs are with people. The research also provides evidence that dogs use different parts of their brains to process human emotions.

The reverse happened when the faces looked surprised, possibly because dogs view it as a non-threatening, relaxed expression. These findings therefore support the existence of an asymmetrical emotional modulation of dogs’ brains to process basic human emotions.

“Clearly arousing, negative emotions seem to be processed by the right hemisphere of a dog’s brain, and more positive emotions by the left side,” says Siniscalchi.

The results support that of other studies done on dogs and other mammals. These show that the right side of the brain plays a more important part in regulating the sympathetic outflow to the heart. This is a fundamental organ for the control of the ‘fight or flight’ behavioural response necessary for survival.

By living in close contact with humans, dogs have developed specific skills that enable them to interact and communicate efficiently with people. Recent studies have shown that the canine brain can pick up on emotional cues contained in a person’s voice, body odour and posture, and read their faces.

In this study, the authors watched what happened when they presented photographs of the same two adults’ faces (a man and a woman) to 26 feeding dogs. The images were placed strategically to the sides of the animals’ line of sight and the photos showed a human face expressing one of the six basic human emotions: anger, fear, happiness, sadness, surprise, disgust or being neutral.

The dogs showed greater response and cardiac activity when shown photographs that expressed arousing emotional states such as anger, fear and happiness. They also took longer to resume feeding after seeing these images. The dogs’ increased heart rate indicated that in these cases they experienced higher levels of stress.

In addition, dogs tended to turn their heads to the left when they saw human faces expressing anger, fear or happiness.

Lost Companions

Reflections on the Death of Pets

Our society is still learning how to dignify the relationship between a pet and their human with proper mourning rituals. We have only recently allowed the conversation of how to grieve for our non-human family members to come front and centre. In examining the special bond between pets and their people, the author validates the grief that we feel when a special pet dies.

Lost Companions is full of poignant stories about dogs, cats, horses, birds, wombats and other animals that beautifully illustrate the strong bond humans form with them. A heartfelt exploration of human grief after the loss of a pet by the New York Times bestselling author of Dogs Never Lie About Love, Lost Companions is a thought-provoking book on pet loss. Masson takes a personal approach, allowing readers to explore their own responses, suggesting ways through and out of grief, as well as meaningful ways to memorialise our best friends.

Mr Walker and the perfect mess

A hotel dog with a nose for adventure

One of the hotel’s most treasured staff members is leaving and, while Mr Walker is sad to see Josephine go, he is determined to make her last week a memorable one. If only he can think of the perfect present. First things first to cope with the summer heatwave and prepare for the Guide Dogs fundraiser. Oof, our little labrador is going to need a nap after this adventure!

Highly illustrated with black and white pictures by Sara Acton and with short chapters and simple language, these adventure stories are perfect for young readers to read with a parent, or for newly independent readers to tackle alone.

The adventures of Mr Walker are inspired by the real-life Mr Walker, a Guide Dog Ambassador, who now calls the Park Hyatt Melbourne home. Born on 3 December 2015, Mr Walker was trained to provide assistance and companionship to people with low vision or blindness by Guide Dogs Victoria. After achieving many milestone stages in his training, it was decided that his larger-than-life personality was best suited to an ambassador role, where his affectionate nature would be able to shine. Under the principal care of the hotel manager, who is also his official foster carer, Mr Walker has been at the hotel since 2017, where he quickly made a name for himself, as well as with the wider Melbourne community, through daily meet and greets in the lobby.
