he boating industry is thriving. According to the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA), nearly 320,000 boats were sold in 2020, which represented

a 13% increase from 2019 reports. The recreational boating industry has not seen sales like this since 2008. Demand for boats of all types and sizes, as well as for boating products and accessories are at an all-time high. This is a great time to visit the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show (FLIBS) as well as other boat shows this Fall.

he inaugural Safe Harbor Race Weekend, recently held in Newport, Rhode Island is now in the history books and has made an indelible mark in the log books of 46 sailing teams from around New England and across the country who competed in it.

A Superyacht class sailed on Friday and Saturday on Rhode Island Sound while another six classes for ORC, PHRF (A, B and C), and Performance Cruising (Spinnaker and Non-Spinnaker) extended their racing into Sunday, sailing mostly on upper Narragansett Bay. “It was a good show of boats,” said Jim Madden (Newport Beach,

California), skipper of the Carkeek 47 Stark Raving Mad IX, which clinched victory in its ORC Class and was named Overall Winner at the event, “so we never took anything for granted.”

Madden explained that after finishing 1-2-1 in a decent sea breeze of 8-12 knots on Friday, Saturday was a different story. A race around Jamestown (Conanicut Island) began downwind in a fiveknot southerly near Rose Island, and when teams struggled to keep spinnakers flying as they sailed north under the Pell Bridge, the Race Committee shortened course at the north end of Jamestown,

only a quarter of the way into what otherwise would have been a scenic and much-anticipated 18-mile navigator’s race.

“It was a short and highly challenging race,” said Madden, adding that his team finished last that day. “We knew we had to be on our game (for the next day).” Saturday’s setback gave them only a one-point lead over Donald Nicholson’s (Weston, Mass.) J/121 Apollo going into Sunday’s final two races. Wellversed in perseverance, however, the Stark Raving Mad IX team finished 2-1 in a dying 9-10 knot northerly on the final day to win, posting what translated into an impressive lead of 7.5 points over second-place finisher Entropy, a Swan 42 skippered

by Patricia Young (Jamestown, R.I.). (Apollo fell to third overall after finishing 4-7 to Entropy’s 3-2.)

Winning the two-race Superyacht series was the 60 Metre (197’) Perini Navi Perseus 3, which had been third overall after Friday’s race. By winning on Saturday, it toppled the 56 Metre (183’) Perini Navi Zenji from the lead it had claimed on Friday and further scrambled the results so that the 36 Metre (118’) custom HJB Whisper, which posted a 2-3 for the series, secured a second overall. Other Winners In PHRF A, the J/121 Incognito, with Joe Brito (Bristol, R.I.) at the helm, edged out Settler, a Tripp 43 owned by Tom Rich (Middletown, R.I.), by one point in final standings.

In PHRF B, Mark and Cory Sertl’s (Rochester, N.Y./Jamestown, R.I.) Farr 30 Das Blau Max won both races on Sunday to overtake early leader Divided Sky, which is owned by Vincent and Kristina McAteer (East Greenwich, R.I.) and finished second overall.

Hawk, the Evelyn 32 owned by Richard and Katie Barker (Newport, R.I.), led its series from day one to win PHRF C, the largest class with nine boats.

Two Performance Cruising Classes, one for Spinnaker and one for Non-Spinnaker, each sailed three races: a navigator’s race around government marks on Friday; the shortened Around the Island Race with the rest of the PHRF fleet on Saturday; and another navigator’s race on Sunday. Winning these classes, respectively, were Stephen De Voe’s (Jamestown, R.I.) Swan 46 Galadriel and David Brodsky’s (Newport, R.I.) 47-foot wooden sloop Odyssey.

Said De Voe: “As far as regattas go – from construction to organization to execution – this was the best of the best.”

Arey’s Pond 14’s Worlds and Cat Gathering T

wo catboat events, AP14 Worlds and Cat Gathering, took place in Orleans, MA. Over thirty 14’s gathered for the first AP World’s event.

The Arey’s Pond Gathering, now in its 29th year, is a just-for-fun sail from Little Pleasant Bay, through The Narrows and into Pleasant Bay. Over 86 catboats and classic sailboats came together for this parade of sail.

Proceeds from the event went to the Friends of Pleasant Bay and Sipson Island Trust. The Featured Artist award went to Julian Cardinal with his work ‘Catboat’ that pictures an Arey’s Pond Caracal.

The new Trideck was conceived on staggered decks to offer an unprecedented interpretation of the environments onboard, even inventing all-new spaces.

The project was carried out by a tested team, consisting of the designers Alberto Mancini for the exteriors, Achille Salvagni for the interiors and Pierluigi Ausonio for the hull.

From a design point of view, the greatest triumph was to create a yacht with a semi planing hull, up to six cabins, a widebody superstructure and a Sun Deck, all while remaining under 300 GT in volume.

Azimut Yachts’ innovative capacity; the feature offers the owner four cascading terraces onto the sea, unique in function, size and flexibility – especially on a Trideck.

The layout innovation is felt right from the first step onboard. The Trideck welcomes her guests through a central royal staircase, which reaches to the quay from the half-raised Sea View Terrace.

It is thanks to this intermediate bridge that a sequence of four cascading terraces is created, which descend from the top down to sea level, each with its own specific function: the Sundeck, the Dining Terrace, the Sea View Terrace, and the Beach Area.

The Sea View Terrace is an open stage, a new cantilevered area that precedes the traditional cockpit. Raised above the surface of the water and conceived as a living room overlooking the sea, the floating platform keeps in touch with the sun and the water at once.

With an open area of about 30 square meters, the Sea View Terrace is fitted out with a large C-shaped sofa arrangement facing off the stern, designed to offer the owner a convivial and immersive entertaining area for guests.

The raised Sea View Terrace also has a second advantage. It gives height to the underlying Beach Area, usable in all its width also thanks to the separate garage for tenders and toys. With two meters of headroom and cutouts in the sidewalls, this is not a space stolen from the garage but a true beach on the sea. During stops at anchor, the hinged transom opens to increase the available surface to more than 30 square meters. The Beach Area is equipped to connect guests directly with the sea, fully customizable in furnishing and served by a day head and wet bar.

The third terrace is the main outdoor dining area, aft of the Upper Deck, which develops around the square table (extendable to seat up to 12) of handcrafted natural teak with white lacquered inserts.

The area is rounded off by corner sofas for aperitivo and a series of furniture for the service.

Topping off the cascade of terraces is the Sun Deck, which comes with a large sunbathing area at the stern with freestanding furniture and a view overlooking the sea. There is a lounge area with opposing circular sofas, with a table for lunch in the center and towards the bow, an American bar overlooks the horizon with a large barbecue.

Entering, one finds an airy, large, bright environment thanks to

El espacio se completa con sofás esquineros para aperitivo y una serie de mobiliario para el servicio.

the floor to ceiling windows, with soft colors for the fabrics and the walls livened by glossy mahogany inserts that accentuate its elegance with contrast. Without the traditional formal dining area, the lounge is set up to encourage conviviality.

The first unit, at the specific request of its owner, has a high level of home automation. All the onboard utilities, lights, air conditioning, curtains, the latest generation audio and video system can be controlled from the tablets supplied, including a huge 77 “ultra-flat TV that comes out electrically from a special compartment on the Main Deck.

Forward on the Main Deck is the owner’s suite, full beam with large windows, and conceptually broken down into special regions, starting from the entrance as a lobby/dressing area.

The formal dining area is located on the Upper Deck. Formal, however, does not mean conventional, the sky-lounge being conceived as a multipurpose area. Most of the time, people prefer to eat outdoors. The Sky Lounge on the Upper Deck is shaped as an intimate nook, with a huge cozy sofa and convertible table, an attractive spot to come inside after dinner, especially for movies, equipped with a 55” pop-up flatscreen. When guests wish to dine indoors, the table can be raised and extended to serve as the main indoor dining, accommodating up to 12 guests.

offered to the owner. The first units ordered all re-quest the sixth unprecedented VIP cabin positioned on the Upper Deck, therefore with a beautiful sea view thanks to the large window, while the captain’s cabin is located on the Lower Deck.

The command area is a blend of elegance and technology, characterized by a futuristic helm that integrates all onboard systems with Simrad Command.

Further forward, there is a sprawling lounge area, with sunpads surrounding the circular whirlpool tub, a lounge area with opposing sofas and then a further sunbed area towards the bow, sheltered by a mini windscreen.

On the Lower Deck there are four en-suite guest cabins: two VIPs aft and two guest cabins forward.

Performance and technology The Azimut Trideck offers innovative design solutions, starting from the tonnage, which remains below 300 GT despite the generous interior volume. This is made possible thanks to the large beach area, which is kept partially opened.

The first of the most significant elements of the Trideck from a technological point of view is the debut of the new secondgeneration D2P® Displacement to Planing hull.

Designed by Pierluigi Ausonio together with the Azimut-Benetti Research and Development Department, the hull benefits from proprietary CFD software, FEM analysis and form optimizations to yield unrivaled results in terms of efficiency. The Grande 35Metri, featuring the first generation D2P hull was already best in class, and the second generation debuts on the Trideck with substantial improvements. Despite being 3 meters longer, 30 GT larger and 35 tons heavier, the Trideck consumes fuel at the same rate as her smaller sister at all speeds above 19 kn, and manages to be 15% more efficient at a cruising speed of 15 kn. nly 200 miles (a 45-minute flight) from the coast of Florida, the Sea of Abaco is a where to go if you’re looking for an easy boating getaway without the hustle and rush. This boomerang-shaped swath of turquoise-colored water is just 60 miles long and five miles wide and each island is completely different, so you’ll feel like you’ve covered a lot of territory in a short time.

Most charter companies are based in Marsh Harbor which is fairly central to everywhere. Even if the weather outside in the Atlantic is frightful, inside the Sea, the sheltered waters remain mostly comfortable except where the passes open to the east.

A local phenomenon, called “The Rage”, brings easterlies with 30+ knots of wind but again, if you stay inside this little bubble, you’ll be fine. Let’s look at some of the highlights.

Guana Cay is a barrier island that protects the center of the Sea of Abaco. Its small marina on the leeward side has a resort with docks and dinghy access. The holding ground for anchoring outside here can be sketchy due to bottom grass but a better nighttime spot is around the corner behind Delia’s Cay. Perhaps the most famous of Guana’s tourist attractions is Nipper’s, a multi-level, colorful bar and restaurant on the windward side that hosts pig roasts on Sundays and pirate parties throughout the year. Just a short walk from the marina, Nipper’s is the place to let your hair down and enjoy a rum punch at the

Man-O-War has been known for its boat building expertise since the 1880s. You can still stroll along the waterfront and see boats, like the popular Abaco dinghies, in mid-build at Albury Brothers Boatyard. The community is small and tightly knit. A few last names like Albury and Archer repeat on local business signs because these families have been here since the settlement was established in the late 1700s.

A must-stop is Albury’s Sail Shop where handmade canvas bags have been sewn for three generations. Each of the colorful creations is uniquely Sojer (the moniker the local residents go by) and they make great gifts.

ked into a tiny harbor on Elbow Cay, is colorful Hope Town where Sherwin Williams seems to send all kinds of crazy colors of house paint. Settled in 1785 by British Loyalists, Hope Town boasts lots of examples of colonial architecture. A stroll through its simple two-street waterfront showcases many of these houses, most of which have names like Toad Hall and Wee House, and some of which show off architectural details that include lace-like wood trim and shutters decorated with bright pineapple motifs.

The centerpiece of Hope Town’s skyline is the nearly 140-yearold candy striped lighthouse. When the beacon went into operation in 1863, many locals opposed it because it interfered with their salvage trade as numerous ships (ripe for pillaging) wrecked on the outer reefs. Today, it’s one of only two manned, kerosene-fueled lighthouses still in operation in the world. A trek up the 200-plus steps inside is a must, if only for the fantastic views from the top.

The Hope Town entry is well marked, if a bit tricky. A shallow channel leads from the Sea into the round harbor full of moorings that may be used for a fee. Hook up and dinghy

to Captain Jack’s on the waterfront for a grouper burger. For a bit of exercise, you can hike along the flat road south to Tahiti Beach – about seven miles round trip. Strolling along this half-moon-shaped spit of white sand, it’s like being transported from one paradise in the Caribbean to another in the South Pacific.

Head farther south to Little Harbor that’s just outside of the Bight of Old Robinson with the headland of Tom Curry Point as its sentinel. It’s a peaceful and perfectly protected bit of water where you can unwind with few thoughts other than when to swim, which caves to explore and where the next turtle or ray will surface to keep you company. Here, you’ll find Pete’s Gallery and Pub that serves up dinner on the weekends. You can also shop in their gallery (they’ll ship anywhere) or occasionally, watch a bronze casting in progress.

of time to sail or explore in between and never feel rushed on a weeklong charter. There are things to watch out for like shoaling reefs and no-see-ums that will make you wish for bug spray. The Sea is shallow and punctuated with unexpected coral flats so keep an eye on your chartplotter as well as on the water color that will help guide you.

The best time to visit the Abacos is April to June. December through March can be chilly with temps in the 60s and 70s while July to September may be hot, not to mention that’s right in the middle of hurricane season. Winds are usually 5-20 knots but can reach 40 knots making the Atlantic outside hostile.

Sometimes, it’s easy to feel like you’ve missed too much if you only have a short vacation but in the Sea of Abaco, you can experience a full charter without covering long miles and rushing from one place to the next. So, reserve a boat, grab a bottle of the Bahamian Kalik beer and follow their label: “Tan your toes in the Abacos”. | 48 | www.yachtingtimesmagazine.com

Serves 4 Prep Time: 15 minutes.

Cook Time: 30 minutes

Ingredients For the shrimp: 1 lb raw shrimp, cleaned and deveined, 2 tablespoons Colavita Spanish Extra Virgin Olive Oil, 1 small yellow onion, diced, 1 tetra pack Colavita Diced tomatoes, 2 chipotle peppers in adobo, 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice, 1 garlic clove, smashed, Salt and pepper.

For the rice: 3 Tbsp Colavita Spanish Extra Virgin Olive Oil, 2 cups long grain rice (basmati or jasmine), 1 plum or Roma tomato, diced, 1 small yellow onion, diced, 1 tbsp tomato paste, 4 cups water, Salt to taste.

Garnish: Lime wedges, Fresh cilantro, 1 jalapeno pepper, sliced (remove seeds and veins for less heat!)

Process: For the Shrimp: Combine the Colavita Diced Tomatoes, the Chipotle peppers, the fresh lime juice, garlic and ¼ tsp salt in a blender and process until smooth. Set aside. Can be made 1 day ahead and stored in a sealed container in the refrigerator.

Heat 1 tbsp Colavita olive oil in large skillet over medium heat.

Add the diced onion, and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes.

Add the shrimp, season with salt and pepper and cook about 2 minutes per side. Remove to a plate.

Add the prepared sauce to the pan and simmer about 10 minutes.

If it thickens too much, add a splash of water (or wine!) Taste and season if necessary.

Add the shrimp back to the pan with the sauce and sauté a few more minutes until cooked through.

Serve over rice (recipe below) with lime wedges and cilantro and sliced jalapeno peppers, if desired.

For the Rice: Heat 1 tbsp Colavita olive oil in large skillet over medium heat. Add the rice to the pan and sauté for 5 minutes until the rice toasts slightly. It will smell “nutty” and begin to brown.

This will add flavor to the rice.

Add the diced tomato and onion and sauté for about 1 minute.

Add the water, tomato paste, and about ½ tsp salt. Stir until all the tomato paste is evenly distributed.

Bring the mixture to a boil, lower the heat to a simmer. Cover the rice and cook for 20 minutes. Until fully cooked.

Add 1 tbsp Colavita olive oil to the rice, stir, recover, and let stand for 5-10 minutes.

Serve alongside the shrimp.

Para el arroz: 3 cucharadas de aceite de oliva virgen extra español Colavita, 2 tazas de arroz de grano largo (basmati o jazmín), 1 tomate Roma picado, 1 cebolla amarilla pequeña picada, 1 cucharada de tomate concentrado, 4 tazas de agua, Sal a gusto.

Guarnición: Gajos de lima, Cilantro fresco, 1 jalapeño en rodajas (quitarle las semillas y las venas para disminuir el picante) Proceso: Para los camarones: Combinar el tomate picado Colavita con los pimientos chipotle, el jugo de la lima, el ajo y 1/4 de cucharita de sal en un procesador hasta obtener una consistencia suave.

Reserve. Puede elaborarse un día antes y guardarse en un recipiente bien sellado en el refrigerador.

Calentar una cucharada de aceite de oliva Colavita en una sartén a fuego medio. Añadir la cebolla picada y dorar hasta que quede translúcida, unos 5 minutos.

Añadir los camarones, sazonar con sal y pimienta y cocinar unos 2 minutos de cada lado. Reservar en un plato aparte.

Añadir la salsa preparada a la sartén y cocinar a fuego lento unos 10 minutos. Si espesa demasiado, añadir un poco de agua (o vino).

Pruebe y sazone si hace falta.

Incorpore los camarones en la salsa y cocine unos minutos más hasta que queden cocinados. Servir sobre arroz (receta a continuación) con unos gajos de lima, cilantro y unas rodajas de jalapeño, si así desea.

Para el arroz: Calentar 1 cucharada de aceite de oliva Colavita en una sartén a fuego medio. Añadir el arroz y dorar unos cinco minutos. Soltará un aroma a nuez y tomará un poco de color.

Esto le dará sabor al arroz. Añadir el tomate picado y la cebolla y saltear un minuto.

Añada agua, tomate concentrado y 1/2 cucharita de sal. Remueva hasta que el tomate concentrado se haya incorporado por completo. Hervir y bajar a fuego suave. Cubrir y cocinar unos 20 minutos hasta que quede hecho.

Agregar una cucharada de aceite de oliva Colavita al arroz, remover y tapar de nuevo y dejar reposar unos 5 a 10 minutos.

Servir con las gambas.
