Editorz Notez Well, it’s been a tough winter, wouldn’t you say? In N.C. we can usually ride the entire year, except for maybe a couple of days of snow and ice. This winter was a little different. We have had several days of frigid cold that has prevented us from doing that.
Happy St. Patty’s Day!
It has kept even the bravest of riders from ridin’ with their tongue in the wind (as Chewy always liked to say). Don’t get me wrong, with the exception of completely snow covered highways, there are folks who ride regardless! You know who you are! Check out a few of those brave riders on pages 44-45. For the rest of us who aren’t so brave...nicer days are comin’. We have had a couple of those days already, Thank you all so much for your continued support! Thank you for being there with us all these years. We could not have done without our biker family, readers and advertisers, brothers and sisters. It will continue on. Please check out the Eventz section for upcoming rides and eventz in the area. They are starting to pile on! ...and that is a good thing! Please let us know if you have an event or ride coming up. We will be glad to help you spread the word here in the mag and on all of our social media outlets! God Bless each of you!
See you out on the road! God Bless! Doobie

nc packs4 patriots Support our local heroes Our mission is dependent on both items for packages and financial support for postage. Our team of volunteers works diligently to ensure our resources are wisely utilized in creating the best care packages! Thank you all of our donors who support our mission with financial donations. Postage assistance can be provided by sending a check or money order to us at the center or you can go here and purchase stamps for $5 or $10 and mail to us to use on our care packages. https://store.usps.com/store/browse/subcategory.jsp… We invite and welcome your support. Our troops are still deploying, still serving and still sacrificing for our country. We honor that service and sacrifice. Will you join our team to make sure we can continue our mission of support to show our deployed troops that Americans still appreciates their service and sacrifice? Please don’t ever think that you can’t make a donation because your effort is too small. We appreciate every single dollar. We have a local senior citizen who makes a donation every single month in honor of her 2 brothers who were killed in World War II. She was just a child, but always remembers her mother’s grief. Her modest donation means the world to us, and we know her brothers are smiling down from the heavens knowing that they are not forgotten, even 75 years later. ~ Barbara
A Big Big “thank you” to St. Joseph United Methodist Church, Pikeville N.C. for all these goodies. And a special “thank you” to Ann Meisenhelder and also to Sj Meisenhelder for delivering these!
GREAT IDEA! Its the little things... Little Debbie Snack Cakes, that is!!!
We have a deployed soldier who is requesting Little Debbie snack cakes! Sometimes it’s the little things they miss the most. If anyone would like to make a donation, you can drop those off at our center on and we will get those in the mail. I am sure his battle buddies will be watching for those care packages to arrive for a yummy sugary treat! HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT FOR VOLUNTEERS AND DONORS: Gather up your church groups, bike clubs, youth organizations, etc. and make it a joint effort! While you are out shopping, look for Little Debbie Snacks and other kinds of snack cakes, cookies, and crackers. Throw a few extra in your shopping cart. When the kiddos get bored or it is a rainy day, break out the craft supplies and make cards, wall hangings, and artwork that can be sent to our heroes. We are so proud of Cara from Girl Scout Troop 611 in Nashville! She gave a speech to the fire department tonight who donated $200 to buy Girl Scout cookies, and members donated another $80 to buy cookies for our care packages! That’s a lot of cookies. BIG BIG THANK YOU Cara!

We enjoy hearing from our troops and seeing the smiles that our packages bring to their faces! Here is a recent letter; Hello all, I am (XXXX). We recently received several boxes of treats, hygiene items, and holiday decorations thanks to generous donations from your organizations! Our company has troops at different locations throughout Iraq and Kuwait and I am working to spread these "goodie bags" out for everyone to enjoy. Attached you will find a photo of the first group of soldiers receiving theirs. I just wanted to send a quick message to express a sincere THANK YOU to all of you that helped put this together. We can tell that it was no small effort and my soldiers and I appreciate it very much. Thank you all for what you do. Sincerely, (XXXX)
Some Little Debbie Snack Cakes came into the center today. There will be many smiling faces!

Your Health Behind Barz Deborah Alston, RN
Old Medicines I bet that each of us at one time have gone to a doctor, received a prescription, filled it and took the medicine to help us heal from whatever was ailing us. Yet have you ever thought of what kind of medicines or medical practices were used say two hundred plus years ago??? One old practice was bloodletting. This is where leeches were used to “suck” blood or a doctor cut into a vein to get rid of some ‘bad blood” that was causing the problem. NOT recommended to do today. Then there was trepanation, where they would bore a hole into the skull to release the evil spirit that was causing the illness. NOT recommended to do today, could you imagine the side effects??? Mercury is notorious for its toxic properties, but it was once used as a common elixir and topical medicine. The ancient Persians and Greeks considered it a useful ointment, and second - century Chinese alchemists prized liquid mercury, or “quicksilver,” and red mercury sulfide for their supposed ability to increase lifespan and vitality. NOT recommended for today.
In ancient times, “Album graecum” – or more colloquially known as dog poo – was a popular treatment for a sore throat. In those days, feces were usually mixed with honey and was believed to treat inflamed throats for the better. NOT recommended today. Times have changed, if you have a physical problem go to see your physician, follow their advice, get better. Do not follow old medicine practices discussed here. Be blessed, ride safe, stay well, and wash your hands!!!!
In the Middle Ages, cataracts were removed by inserting a sharp instrument – a knife or large needle – through the cornea and forcing the lens of the eye out of its capsule. NOT recommended today.

z t a e d l i w For those of you who like to hunt, kill, and prepare your own food, we have compiled some of our favorite recipes. We will showcase them for you here. If you do not bag your own game and would rather buy it, there are many fine butcher shops and specialty meat markets that offer rabbit, hare, turkey, venison, duck, goose, quail, pheasant, and other big and small game. So, no excuses! As any Southerner knows, both raccoon and opposum make excellent eating! But neither of these are found in specialty butcher shops or the like. These animals are truly wild. Since a feast of game for most people is not an everyday affair...sad but true...you may substitute other commonly used meats for the ones listed here. We don’t recomment this, though. You ride, don’t you? Let your taste buds go wild, too! When early European settlers arrived in America turkeys were plentiful in North Carolina and were probably found throughout the entire state. By the turn of the century, however, few turkeys remained. The decline was primarily due to unregulated and heavy market hunting, rapid deforestation and habitat destruction throughout the state. This decline continued into the 1960s. Turkeys are once again common in North Carolina, thanks to a restoration program implemented by the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission that involved live-trapping and relocating wild turkeys from sites in North Carolina and other states to areas in the state where the bird had previously disappeared. The male eastern wild turkey has dark plumage with striking bronze, copper and green iridescent colors. On the inside of their legs, males have pointed growths known as spurs that they use when battling other males for mates.
14
Males also have a growth of bristle-like feathers known as the “beard” that extends from the chest. It is not uncommon, however, to find females with a beard. The head and neck of adult males is largely bare and varies in color from red to blue to white, depending on the bird’s mood. Females are usually duller in color than males, which help camouflage them while they are nesting. The eastern wild turkey thrives best in areas with a mix of forested and open land habitats. Forested areas are used for cover, foraging, and for roosting in trees at night. Open land areas are used for foraging, mating, and brood rearing.
Tips...When cleaned and cooked properly, wild turkeys aren’t tough and dry table fare; they are absolutely delicious. Make sure that you baste your bird often and liberally during the cooking! ...or just use the beer can method. Sit that bird on a can of your favorite beer in the oven or on the grill. Add your spices to the can and bird. The beer in the can will evaporate, sending steam into the inside of the bird and moistening the meat from the inside. YUM!
“ A WILD TURKEY SIDEKICK” GUACUMBERMATER SALAD INGREDIENTS: 1 hot house English cucumber, seeded and sliced into ¼-inch slices 2 avocados, peeled, pitted and sliced into ½-inch chunks 8-10 Campari or cocktail size tomatoes, halved and then quartered ¼ Maui onion, thinly sliced 1 jalapeno, sliced 1 cup fresh cilantro leaves 2 tablespoons canola oil Juice of 2 limes, about ¼ cup ¼ teaspoon chile powder Generous pinch of sugar Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper DIRECTIONS: In a large bowl, add the cucumber, avocados, tomatoes, onion, jalapeño and cilantro leaves. In a small bowl, mix the canola oil with the lime juice, chile powder, sugar and season with kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste. Pour over the salad ingredients and lightly toss to coat. Serve chilled or at room temperature.
DEEP FRIED TURKEY RUB Yield: Approximately 4 ¼ cups Total time: 10 minutes INGREDIENTS: 2 cups Italian dressing ½ cup cayenne pepper 3 tablespoons butter, melted ½ cup black pepper 1 cup Cajun seasoning 2 tablespoons garlic powder DIRECTIONS: 1. In a medium bowl, mix ¾ of the Italian dressing, cayenne pepper, melted butter, black pepper, Cajun seasoning and garlic powder. 2. Rub over turkey, using remaining Italian dressing to fill cavity. Allow turkey to marinate 24 hours. For the best results, brine the turkey for 12 hours before marinating it with the rub. Brine the turkey for an additional 12 hours for the best results

KICKBACK JACK’S Garner, N.C. Emma and I visited Kickback Jack’s for a late lunch. Five bikes were parked outside even on a week day. Everything we have ever eaten at Kickback Jack’s has been great! Their Carnivore pizza is my favorite but this time I thought I would try something different. I ordered the fresh 1/2 pound burger with a side of extra pickles. Emma got a Philly Cheesesteak sandwich. Both were served with fries. Our sandwiches came to the table piping hot! Our waitress kept our adult beverages topped off. And even though we didn’t have anymore room left after our meal, we ordered a Brownie Sundae...A warm, soft fudge brownie with vanilla ice cream topped with a river of chocolate syrup and caramel then topped with a cloud of whipped cream and a cherry. This thing was huge! One of the many things that Kickback Jack’s is famous for, other than their great food, is all the happenings there. There is always something going on at Kickback Jack’s!!! Check out their Facebook page. They have some of the best bike nights around! They are located in Garner. Easy stop on your way to Cabelas. There are numerous locations to choose from in NC and VA. Plus, there is a new Kickback Jack’s that just opened in Durham. But the Garner location is our favorite!

Oyster Roast
27 January 18 was the big event! The 2nd Annual Sylvan Heights Bird Park Oyster Roast Fundraiser. Cooler weather means oyster season in Eastern North Carolina and the weather was just right the night of the event! Everyone’s ticket included steamed shrimp, oysters, slaw, hush puppies, beer, wine and live entertainment. There was also a non-seafood option (barbeque) as well as a vegetarian option. This event helps raise funds to support the Park’s mission of conservation and education.
Did you know that the staff use ground up oyster shells to feed nesting birds? The shells provide critical calcium to nesting shore birds and waterfowl. So come eat oysters and help the birds! Sylvan Heights Bird Park is home to the world’s largest and most biologically significant collection of waterfowl, along with many other bird species. The Park also provides a natural wetlands habitat for local wildlife.

from the
mind of big ed Sure, this would have been a game changer for some folks I know, but not me. I was going to ride that bike and venture the road to being a real biker one day.
Big Ed aka 2Timer
Let’s face it for real. A brand new bike and helmet doesn’t make you a biker. Riding from a bar to another bar doesn’t make you a biker. You got to put some time in it y’all. Ride in the rain. Ride in the icey cold. Put some real miles on that sled. Get lost and lose focus of the troubles of life. Just ride. Feel the bike. Be one with the steel frame and rumbling motor. Feel the timing of the engine follow with the timing of your heart. Feel the wind and loose yourself. That’s being a biker y’all. That’s loving it. Breathing it. Making love to it.
Hello to all my biker brothers and sisters!!!
Yea.. It’s been a minute since I’ve been able to ride, but my time is coming ‘cause I’m not going to give up. My ride is waiting for me to put it in the wind. I hope it is soon that I can end up Behind Barz.
2TIMER
Man!!! Life can sure get busy, can’t it? It won’t long ago I joined my brothers in a Motorcycle club. Working a job, raising some kids and grinding some tread off my motorcycle tires. Yea, Man. Life was just rolling on. I didn’t put too much plan in a future really, simply because everything I’ve planned seems to nose dive. So, I stopped planning and just went with the flow. Going with the flow concept is great but life still catches up to ya and when it does, it gives you a reality check. I know too well of reality checks, is like being more then half way of the bottle and then your side mirror starts showing that wild blue light reflection. WHAM! Reality check! Lately tho it’s been spinning wrenches at the factory. I’m working 13 days on and only off like one and half. Some would call this a blessing. Don’t take me for being ungrateful, but the only dust my two wheels are getting these days are the dust it gains sitting in my building. It’s heart breaking to be honest. I’m putting enough change in my pocket to be able to burn some fuel but no time to burn it. I know, shut up. 2Timer is crying ‘bout his problems. It’s life, you can’t have your cake and eat too. Hell, my whole life is a story of being a dollar short and a day late. I’m that guy. You know? Thay guy who could fall in a barrel of boobies and come out sucking his own thumb. Yelp. The one thing that’s always worked for me though, I was never good at just giving up. I had to beat the dead horse. Like when I got my first bike and changed the front brake caliper. I took it for a ride and the front end locked up and threw me over the handle bars.

Billy Lane’s Son’s of Speed Race Billy Lanes Son’s of Speed race happens in March and will be the 3rd race since its inception. The 1st was last March during Daytona Bike Week. The race was held at New Smyrna Speedway to an almost sellout crowd. Some of the names racing included Matt Harris, Rhett Rotten, Moonshiner Josh Owens, Billy Lane, Brittney Olsen, Shelley Rossmeyer, Xavier Murrel, Buzz Kanter, and many more. This race was won by Brittney Olsen. The 2nd race was held at Full Throttle Saloon in Sturgis, SD. At the time, Michael Ballard was having a new dirt track made. Although the track was new there was not any clay on it and it made for a very difficult race. Billy was expecting 12-14 bikes. However, with the unknown track completion and what kind of shape it would be in, there were only 5 bikes. Matt Harris took a bad spill on the 1st lap of qualifying and we had a Red flag for around 30 min. After qualifying was over the main event started. It was only 5 laps but let me tell you it was a fun filled 5 laps! Nobody had any traction and the bikes were bouncing all over the place. The final lap was Ebay Jake (riding the C and C Motorsports 1919 Harley J model) and Billy lane fighting it out pretty hard. The final turn, Billy lane rode almost up to Ebay Jakes side but Jake pulled a bike length to take the Win.
The 3rd race was held during Biketoberfest in Daytona. Once again, the race was at New Smyrna speedway. There were a few new faces including, Matt Walksler. Matt is well known for building race engines and also racing. His Dad is, Dale Walksler, from the Wheels Through Time Museum in Maggie Valley, N.C. This was the 3rd race for Billy Lane’s Son’s of Speed. I think there were around 16 bikes. After the heat races the field was set for the final.
32
Matt Harris, Matt Walksler, Ebay Jake, and Moonshiner Josh Owens..As they started the bikes everyone was going expect Josh Owens, some problems on the owens machine and they could not get it fired. The race started without him, this was a fierce battle between Matt Walksler and Ebay Jake, they were side by side and swapping the lead for 3 laps until Jake took the lead on lap 4 and continued to pull away, on lap 5 Matt’s engine started missing and on lap 6 Matt pulled in to keep from damaging his engine any more. Ebay Jake on the C and C Motorsports bike took the Victory!
March 17th will be the next Son’s of Speed Races (4th race) and it is shaping up to be another great race. They are scheduled for Bike Week on Saturday, March 17 at the New Smyrna Speedway, south of Daytona Beach. Word has it that there will be several new riders and numerous people have had their engines built and there should be several really fast machines. Billy is adding a new class, the “Harley 45” class (45 cubic inch flathead racers).
Motorcycle Cannonball 2018 This is an endurance run on Pre 1928 motorcycles. This year the start will be on Sept. 8th in Portland, Maine and travel the North and West over the Rockies and end up in Portland, Oregon on Sept. 23rd. Just fourteen days! Jody Perewitz and Curtis Venable have teamed up for this years run. 2018 will be the 1st year that C and C Motorsports and Jody have attempted to run the Cannonball. Jody will be riding one of C and C Motorsports bikes, a 1926 Harley JD. Follow us on facebook @ Perewitz Venable Cannonball journey and for more info on the Motorcycle cannonball visit Motorcyclecannonball.com Jody works at Perewitz Cycle Fab – a family - owned custom motorcycle shop just outside of Boston – but she’s also a land speed record holder and is attempting to be the first woman to complete the Motorcycle Cannonball. While other women have taken part in the endurance race, a woman has yet to conquer the full mileage.
I have heard there are 6-8 riders already interested in this class. Billy is also dividing up the old class to have a “Hot 61” class (the faster 61 cubic inch boardtrack racers) and a “Regular 61” class (the older and slower 61 cubic inch boardtrack racers). Son’s of Speed 2018 should be another great race! Come out and pull for both of C and C Motorsports bikes. Defending race winner, Ebay Jake, will return to the saddle this year and we welcome newcomer, Jody Perewitz, to our stable. Some of you may have heard her name because of her land speed racing. She currently holds numerous records, including a World Record! Jody’s father is famous bike painter and builder, Dave Perewitz. To learn more about Jody visit: www.Jodyperewitz.com.
This is the motorcycle that Jody Perewitz will be riding during the 2018 Motorcycle Cannonball Endurance Run...A 1926 Harley-Davidson JD. Owned by Curtis Venable of Grantham, N.C.

Motor Maid News They dared to be different; in the process made history
Dot Robinson

story: Ellen Taylor Virginia Motor Maid
Vera Griffin
They had a dream, it wasn’t a big dream all they wanted to do is unite other women motorcyclists, so they can share their passion with other like minded women. Before they knew it, Motor Maids of America was born, the year 1941, with 51 members on the roster! The members of this club were born during a time when women were expected to be seen and not heard. These special ladies were born to change history and how the world would view women motorcyclists in the future! The journey wasn’t easy for them; it was difficult for women to go against society during a time when our world was controlled by men! Men of the time, put women in a box, they were expected to look and act a certain way! In the 30’s and 40’s it wasn’t lady-like-behavior to ride a motorcycle; a bike was a man’s machine. During that time most women wouldn’t even think about wearing pants, let alone throw their leg over a motorcycle, because they were conditioned not to do that. It wasn’t lady-like behavior! Just to give you an idea; back in the early 1930’s a young woman who had a passion for motorcycles, found it very difficult riding her bike in the long dresses. I am assuming the dresses kept getting caught in the chain of the bike. Society said she had to wear the dresses. I’m also assuming, one day she had had enough; she put on men’s pants, so she could ride her bike more easily, only to be arrested for wearing men’s pants!
Lind Dugeau riding through deep water.
Dot Robinson during the Jack Pine Endurance Race.
Another great story; One favorite story told by “Hap,” the Honda dealer in Sarasota, Fl. He tells of how he “chased that woman (Dot Robinson) for two days, through mud and trees” and never caught her. At the end of the race, all the guys tramped into the local bar, but not Dot. She went to her room and got cleaned up first. “I’ll never forget the picture: Dot wailing into the bar in a black sheath dress and a pill box hat.” Dot was always a lady. Dot set a standard for women motorcyclists. She proved you could be a lady and still ride a motorcycle!
It wasn’t until around the time of WWII (1939) that women begain wearing pants, only because the wemon were working in the factories while our boys were overseas fighting in the war. It still was not widely accepted! In 1960 the feminist movement began and the Equal Rights Amendment was passed. Since everyone was supposed to be equal it finally became acceptable for women to wear pants. The Motor Maids of America stepped out of the society mode of the time, dared to be different and made history in the process. They following their hearts and passion, as well as showing the world, that women can ride a motorcycle and still be a respected lady! The Jack Pine was a 2-day, 500 mile off-road event forcing the competitors to average 24 miles every hour, checking in at check points, fording rivers, going through sand and every other type of terrain imaginable.
Vera Griffin moving a barrel with her bike. She made it look so easy!
Pat Boatright, her face shows such determination!
motormaids.org
So, their small dream is still going strong, 75 years later! Once known as Motor Maids of America, now known today as Motor Maids, Inc. We have over 1,200 members across the United States and Canada. We have come a long way baby, thanks to these wonderful pioneer ladies; they paved the way for women everywhere!

~ When Can the Government Take Your Land? ~ By David Henson Managing partner of HensonFuerst Attorneys.
As a biker, you love the freedom of a wide-open road. But that freedom loses some of its luster if your property was taken to build or expand a highway. ********************************************************* The power of the government to take your land is rooted in very old law called Eminent Domain. In America, that law traces back to the United States Constitution, under the 5th Amendment, which states that ‘no private property shall be taken for public use, without just compensation.’ In most cases, it is very difficult to defeat a government’s authority to take land. It happens occasionally, but in our experience, that’ a very difficult fight to win. While they must provide proof that your land is of benefit to the public, such as for building a new roadway, they must pay you the “fair value” for that land at its highest and best use. You can negotiate the value of the land, but more often than not, the government is going to get your land whether you like it or not. In other cases, land may be taken by Inverse Condemnation, when the government or a private entity does something to reduce the value of your land…without paying you anything. Some examples of this might include: 1. A highway is built near your property, and an important water source is altered such that your land is now flooded. 2. During the construction of a highway, the contractors use explosives, and the blast from the dynamite causes damage to your buildings or home. 3. The state has long-term plans to build a roadway project, say, 20 years from now. But, in the meantime, will not allow you to build or make improvements to your land. We frequently see cases like this when the state is considering building a belt line around a major city, but the project may drag on for decades. All the while, property owners can neither sell nor improve their property. In all of these ways, you—the landowner—are being deprived of your state and federal constitutional rights to receive just compensation for your property. If one of these situations is affecting you, then talking with an attorney about your legal rights is probably the single best thing you can do to protect yourself and your investment.
40
What is “Fair Value”? The first question most people have when they find out their land is being taken is “How much money will I be paid?” Well, in an eminent domain land condemnation case, the amount you receive for your land can be determined in a couple of ways. In most cases, if the NC DOT or other government agency preparing to take your land, they will have their own appraiser determine the value of the land taken from you. That is the amount they will likely offer you. In my experience, this appraised value is always lower that what your land is actually worth. That’s because the State’s appraisers are working for the government, and will therefore try to minimize the amount that has to be paid to you—the less they pay you, the more money they get to keep. The only way to fight this low-ball offer is to hire an attorney experienced in land condemnation cases. Your attorney will retain a real estate appraiser who is experienced in land condemnation and eminent domain cases on your behalf. That appraiser will be independent of the government, and will develop an opinion of the value of your land, which considers all of the factors allowed under the law. Now, if this process seems unfair and uncaring, you’re right—it is. The government will be unemotional and unmoved about your plight as a landowner. To them, it is all about money and building things. But to you, it is about a whole lot more than that. It’s about your home, your land, your family, your life. That’s why having an attorney on your side is so important. You need someone who understands your legal rights, and who will fight the big battles for you. We have created a whole video series about Eminent Domain, Land Condemnation, and Inverse Condemnation. You can find the videos and more at: www.nclandlawyer.com.

Bill Lyerly We had the pleasure of seeing Bill Lyerly “Live” at Nash Arts in Nashville, N.C., on 15 February! What a great venue for a concert! What is so special about concerts at Nash Arts? The set-up is such that you almost feel as if you are on stage with the performers. It is a very intimate setting, with seats close to the stage. Every seat in the house is a great seat! With the dome ceiling, the acoustics seem to envelope you instead of hitting you from the front as with most concerts. Bill Lyerly, along with Clyde Mattocks, and Alan Hicks put on a heck of a performance. Another NC local, Dennis Winstead stood in for a few songs on banjo.
A
merican roots rock rebel Bill Lyerly has a fascination with Europe that follows the tradition of two famous bluesman with whom he has performed. Both John Lee Hooker and Bo Diddley found a great echo in the Old World for there music, a scenario which has also led Lyerly to establish himself in the Basque Country. This veteran guitarist, singer/songwriter and keyboard artist has had a magnificent response from the public who flock to his live performances. Like those shows, Lyerly records showcase his own unique vision of American roots music. Lyerly began his musical career at age eleven after hearing the blues/rock influenced music of the British Invasion. He played with bands throughout middle school, high school and college and in 1975 co-founded Super Grit Cowboy Band, called “the South’s hottest honky tonkers” by The Village Voice. In 1980 Lyerly signed with RCA Nashville and began writing and recording albums and CDs, which include: Prodigal Son, Higher Ground, From The Old School, Railroad Station Blues, Colbalt Blues, Motel Room Blues, Requiem Mess, The Twang Years and Too Hurt To Cry. From 1999-2000 Lyerly was nominated for five CAMMYs, an East Coast rhythm and blues award, and won Best New Artist in 2000. Other greats Lyerly has performed with include: REM, Paul Rodgers, Gregg Allman, Eric Burdon, Levon Helm, John Mayall and many more!

lan Hicks played smooth renditions on the Bass and sang a couple of songs during the show. Bill, Clyde, and Alan entertained the crowd with old favorites. Alan grew up in Garner NC. He played with David Allan Coe 1978 thru 1981 recording 2 albums with him, Compass Point and Spectrum 7. He also played with the Super Grit Cowboy Band from 1982-89. They had 4 albums and 5 singles on the National Charts. Alan has played on numerous recording sessions, as well as, written songs for other artists, including 2 NC artists, Jonathan Parker and Aaron Hamm.
C
lyde Mattocks was also a co-founder of the Super Grit Cowboy Band. He plays steel guitar, dobro, electric guitar, banjo...if it has strings Clyde is a master! Clyde still plays around eastern NC. Look for him playing at venues near you! Nash Arts is a private, nonprofit organization, which celebrates, promotes and produces artists and arts activities, provides support to other area arts organizations and encourages and generates arts education in order to enhance the quality of life in Nash County. Our organization showcases local, regional and national artists, professional and emerging, as well as self-taught artists and craftsmen. Our goal is to reach out to all members of our community. Nash Arts is housed in The Nash Arts Center, a former Baptist Church built in 1914, that was slated to be demolished and made into a parking lot in 1983, much to the dismay of local citizens.
