nc packs4 patriots Support our local heroes Our mission is dependent on both items for packages and financial support for postage. We invite and welcome your support. Our troops are still deploying, still serving and still sacrificing for our country. We honor that service and sacrifice. Will you join our team to make sure we can continue our mission of support to show our deployed troops that Americans still appreciates their service and sacrifice?

Military wives volunteering to support America’s finest! Army strong families!

Please don’t ever think that you can’t make a donation because your effort is too small. We appreciate every single dollar.

We love our Pitt Community College Nursing students! Today they channeled their creativity into decorating Snowman CD holder/ wall hanging. Becky Brown makes the snowmen and our students bring original artwork to the design. It’s a great touch of home during deployments!

Troop Signup for Care Packages We appreciate the service of the members of our country’s military as they deploy to serve missions in difficult and dangerous environments. Our care packages show the care and support of a grateful nation. They contain snacks, toiletries, and recreation items. Troops are welcome to ask for specific items that they may be missing or needing. Special requests often are items like coffee, certain snacks, socks, favorite magazines and books. We send packages that are large enough for several members of a troop to share. Chaplains are a good point of contact for our organization so they can distribute items in chapel, recreation items, or along their visits to outlying areas. Troops who wish to receive packages are asked to email us at ncp4p@yahoo.com or private message us on the facebook page. We print extra copies of the magazine every issue to give to NCPacks to send to our troops! Also, any leftovers that are picked up from businesses that carry BB are sent to NCPacks.

We enjoyed working with this group of spouses from Seymour Johnson Air Force base, supporting about 700 airmen and families!

We are always proud to partner with organizations giving, caring and sharing with those in need. Eastern N.C. has been devastated with flooding of historical proportions from Hurricane Florence. Many military families and also veterans are needing assistance during this time. If you would like to help, we welcome your partnership. Also... This is the amount of postage spent this year: $13,165.30! We need support to continue mailing care packages to deployed troops. Our Christmas packages are so important as the holidays are the hardest time to be away from family and home. Please ask your churches schools, civic groups to help us by mailing a check to: NCPacks4Patriots, 249J Third St Ayden NC 28513 ~Barbara

GYPSY

their highway showed them many things to see. They were experiencing the open road together, the man and the Gypsy.

She rode on the Wind,

As they rode through the time of life,

with her strawberry locks carefree.

obstacles of the road began to be.

People admired her courage on that bike,

They continued to ride and distance taking its toll,

She was known as a Gypsy. On the road she was beautiful,

something was a miss for the man and the Gypsy.

as any Woman of her stature should be.

Life had came to the traveling pair,

Her heart told her something was missing,

jobs, distances, priorities these all came fast,

for the lovely Gypsy.

The man and Gypsy's timing of life was not in sync,

A lonely rider burning down the road,

Their love at this time was part of a past.

He was looking for that special love. A beauty he had never seen passed him by, he pulled a tight turn, and followed this Dove. She met the man who shared her passion, as they both rode her heart was filled with Glee. Together they rode the streets throttle in hand,

The lonely rider now rides the streets alone, running up and down the road wanting to believe. To believe that his heart and soul will be full, by having one more chance with the Gypsy. She rode on the Wind, with her strawberry locks carefree.

the lonely man and the Gypsy.

People admired her courage on that bike,

Over the byways and many adventures were had,

She was known as a Gypsy.

Defensive Ridin My passion for motorcycles began when I popped the clutch on my friend’s dad’s dual-sport motorcycle when I was a teenager. The bike reared up like a stallion while I held on tightly in fear of being thrown off. Finally remembering to release the throttle and pull in the clutch, the front wheel came down and I took off across the field trying to remember what to do next. When I changed into second gear, I became more confident and started doing what I had been instructed to do and was hooked immediately. Things were simpler back then and we too often learned lessons the ‘hard way’. We were fearless, but the lessons learned really stuck. At eighteen, I came ‘out of the closet’ as a biker to my mom when I purchased a used Honda CB350 to ride around the NCSU campus and then home on the weekends during the gas shortages of the mid-seventies. As bikers tend to do, I soon made friends with others that also rode, some from my hometown area.

rope, and a wire coat hanger, we found a way to strap it on top of the stuff on my bike. I remember how light the front end of my bike felt. I was not concerned when the rear shocks bottomed out at the end of Mom’s driveway, but knew I had to be careful We often made the hour-plus ride to Rocky Mount, my hometown, on weekends and holidays to do our laundry and pick up supplies. Amazing how much stuff you can get in an Army surplus duffle bag used as a base for the precarious load tied with rope to the sissy bar. We didn’t have bungee cords or stretch cargo nets back then, so we used our Boy Scout knot training. It was a wonder we never had any serious mishaps from overloading our bikes. We often met at my house for a Sunday lunch cooked by my mom before heading back to school. She always cooked excessive amounts of country-style food and as a result, my home was typically the staging area for the ride back. Once as we were preparing to leave, my mom came out with a cooked pot roast packed in a Tupperware container. My bike was already loaded down to more than capacity, my bags stuffed with clean clothes, food, and books secured to the sissy bar. After smelling the contents of the succulent roast and at the insistence and with the aid of my buddies, some

starting off from a stop, the bike prone to doing an unplanned wheelie much like that dual-sport years ago. We took Highway 97 that day. It was dry and sunny and we relaxed and enjoyed the wind, smells, and scenery as it passed by at 60 mph. Back then we typically rode two abreast, but on that day, rode single file with me in the lead due to the abundance of trucks and other large vehicles on the road. Suddenly, the unexpected happened as my bike bounced over a seam in the road where the asphalt of the road connected with the concrete of the new bridge over the recently completed I-95 overpass. I saw the bump much too late to slow down and, with my buddies right behind me, suddenly hitting the brakes was not an option. My rear wheel, already having little clearance between it and the fender, bottomed out and sent a jolt through the frame of my bike and the mountain of supplies topped by the roast secured behind me. The roast was set free when my Honda hit the three-inch drop on the other side of the bridge and went airborne.

ng - The Load Only Johnny saw the roast leave my bike immediately in front of him. He, being a bit of a dare devil and an accomplished country-boy athlete, instantly responded as if by reflex or perhaps due to his subconscious recollection of the smell and taste of Mom’s cooking. He tried to catch the Tupperware container containing ten or more pounds of hot, succulent meat and vegetables swimming in chunky brown gravy. Unfortunately for him and especially Jimmy and Bob behind him, the lid came off. Johnny lost control on his bike. While struggling to regain straight forward motion, the entire contents of the container filled the air after splashing against his chest androlling off, spraying into the wind behind him. The roast hit the pavement and bounced off coming to rest between the exhaust pipes at the front of Jimmy’s Yamaha. The other lighter ingredients sprayed him from head to toe, a large piece of carrot lodging itself at the base of his neck. Bob fared much better and only got sprayed with the lighter chunks of still warm gravy. His mouth was open under his raised face shield, and he got an immediate taste and glorious smell of the food. They all pulled over immediately, but I went on for a quarter mile before doing a U-turn and heading back. I was astonished at what I saw. Jimmy was wiping the brown gravy and chunks of carrots and potatoes off himself. Johnny and Bob were kneeling over the front of the engine of Jimmy’s bike. As we watched, Bob took out his pocket knife, poked the area between the pipes, and came back with a fist-sized chunk of roast. After quickly inspecting his prize, he took a huge bite. Seeing all of them watching him, he held out the chunk of meat.

bb life

“Anybody want a bite?” he asked with a grin. Johnny stood up with his own chunk and added, “it’s still warm”. I still remember the scorched smell of the meat as it simmered a gainst the hot pipes of the Yamaha. A defensive riding principle I now follow is: Load your bike securely and check it often. Bungee cords and cargo nets break and become hazardous not only because of the loose load but can lodge in your chain or belt or even worse, wrap around your rear axle and bring your rear tire to an abrupt, skidding stop. After inspecting restraints for wear, put an extra strap on the load and cover it all with a cargo net, being careful to put most of the weight forward of the rear axle. Enjoy your rides safely and defensively!

Swan Days Festiv

The Swan Days Festival in Hyde County on December 8 will celebrate the annual migration of the majestic Tundra Swans and other species of birds to Lake Mattamuskeet. Each winter, about 250,000 migratory birds come to eastern North Carolina from the Alaskan Tundra to winter on the state’s largest natural lake. This nearly 4000-mile journey has been occurring from before recorded history in North America. The winter waterfowl on the lake has fascinated hunters and bird watchers since the Mattamuskeet Indians lived in the region before European explorers arrived. This one-day festival has no admission fees. The event will take place on Mattamuskeet National Wildlife Refuge and at Mattamuskeet School. Activities on the refuge begin with a nature photography workshop at 6:30 am, led by Matthew Molt of Pantego. To reserve a space in the workshop, visit the Facebook page of Matthew Molt Photography. There will be several wildlife and conservation exhibits adjacent to the refuge headquarters. Chase Luker of the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission will present a free decoy-carving workshop. Chase will provide everything needed by participants. To reserve a place in his workshop, send an email to <chase.luker@ncwildlife.org>. A highlight of the festival is the guided tram tour program to view thousands of migratory birds within areas of Mattamuskeet Refuge not normally open to the public. The tram tours, scheduled at four times during the day, require advance reservations. Reservations will open at 8:00 am on November 20, by calling 252-926-1638 or 252-926-1639. There will be no early reservations. The first tour will board the shuttle buses to the trams at Mattamuskeet School at 7:45 am. For individuals who are unsuccessful in reserving a seat on a tram, there will be a guided caravan tour in private automobiles forming at the school at 9:30 am and leaving at 10:00. Activities within the school are from 10:00 to 4:00, and include five educational presentations in the cafeteria and vendors in the gymnasium. Architect Mark Williard will give an update on the renovation of Mattamuskeet Lodge. John Stanton, wildlife biologist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will present a program about the waterfowl that winter at the lake entitled “Magic at Mattamuskeet.”

Former State Senator A. B. Swindell will moderate a panel discussion with former hunting guides of Lake Mattamuskeet in a program called “Lunch with the Guides.” These men guided wild goose hunters on Lake Mattamuskeet before 1972 when the lake was the “Canada Goose Hunting Capitol of the World.” The guides will tell interesting stories of their experiences with hunting parties from throughout the eastern United States. Educational exhibitors will include Sylvan Heights Bird Park, North Carolina Estuarium, North Carolina Wood Duck Program, Albemarle Sound Delta Waterfowl Chapter, Mattie Arts Center, Hyde Historical & Genealogical Society, Kaye Lee’s Corner Foundation, North Carolina Forest Service, North Carolina Marine Fisheries, and the Mattamuskeet Foundation.

Dr. Lewis Forrest (your author), founder and executive director of the Mattamuskeet Foundation will speak on the history of Lake Mattamuskeet. Forrest is also the author of the book, Lake Mattamuskeet, New Holland, and Hyde County.

There will also be activities for the kids, including North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission’s Safari Trailer, Archery Range, and more. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife mascot, the “Blue Goose,” and the U.S. Forest Service mascot, “Smokey the Bear,” will be on hand to entertain the kids.

Scott Dawson, founder and president of the Croatoan Archaeological Society and Marco Gibbs, history buff of Hyde County, will team up to present a program on Native American life around Lake Mattamuskeet in the colonial period. Dawson authored the book, Croatoan: Birth Place of America.

Dr. Forrest is a member of the Swan Days Planning Committee. His mobile phone is 252-341-7882 and his email address is <mail@mattamuskeet.org>. For more information about the festival, visit the Swan Days Facebook page or check out the website at <www.swandays.com>.

Thanks to everyone who came out and supported the Behind Barz Presentz The Insane T-shirt Palooza Benefit. It was held at various locations around eastern North Carolina throughout the year. Each location got to pick the charity of their choice and decide what would be happening (food, entertainment, games or rides) on the day of their event. It was a huge success for many charities thanks to you, our readers and the host locations that put a lot of effort into these events! All together, over $30,000 was raised at the Palooza events!!! Thanks to everyone for your efforts and diligence in making this happen! So many people were a part of this success! Our goal was to raise money for charities in our communities and hopefully, bring awareness to those charities. We also had a running contest between the host locations. The one that raised the most for their charity would win a two page spread in the magazine. The Good Tymes Club won that contest, hands down! You can read all about it on pages, 36-37 in this issue. Thanks again to all of the sponsors of this event who donated the beautiful t-shirts and other killer prizes!

2018 MotoAmerica champions celebrated in Las Vegas The annual night of champions leaves them smiling. LAS VEGAS, NEVADA -MotoAmerica, its champions, teams, sponsors, fans and the motorcycle industry celebrated the 2018 MotoAmerica season on Thursday evening during a festive Night of Champions at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino. Additionally, Mathew Scholtz was named as the Motul Superbike Rookie of the Year; Yamaha won the inaugural Wells Fargo Manufacturers Cup; and Josh Herrin walked away with the first-ever MotoAmerica Social Media Cup. “It’s been an amazing year and I just can’t thank all my guys enough and Yamaha,” Beaubier said after receiving his awards from MotoAmerica President Wayne Rainey. “They truly are like family. Thanks to all those guys for putting up with my crap and always giving it 110 percent. I’m really, really proud of what we did this year. We were all on the back foot and we kept fighting and that’s what it’s all about. Toni (Elias) came in 2016 and had to learn all the tracks and all the stuff and he had an old bike. Last year he showed what a World Champion he is, an incredible rider, and he definitely raised the bar in the last year. I’m really happy that we were able to match his season and give him something to fight with. Big thanks to everyone in my corner. I’m really going to enjoy this one.”

from the

mind of big ed Think about it. If you like hunting and you get to working with a crew of deer hunters. Then your actual job may suck but at least you can talk about rifles and corn and bullets and all the things that hunting does for ya.

Big Ed aka 2Timer

I also got another guy who is interested big time about getting a motorcycle. He’s constantly showing pictures and asking what I think about certain Harleys. This is a great way to start a conversation with me if there is ever any silence between us in the morning. ‘Cause you are going to get a response.

Hello all you happy people!!! I started a new job back in March of this year. I am still doing maintenance mechanic work for a factory. Well, at least ‘til that winning number hits, right??? Anyway, I dig the company. It’s some long hours and even though the plant management told me that I wouldn’t have to worry ‘bout a lot of overtime...Well...They lied. I don’t know why they think lying to me, would be a great start to this blue collar working man, but what can you do? Yeah, I know. And I am. Been on Indeed and other job searching sites but the good Lord will provide and I’ve got faith that he’ll put me where he needs me. So until then, I’ll keep turning the wrenches here. The best part about this job though, is the crew I work with. My lead mechanic and I have worked together at a plant many years ago. He was a cool dude then and he’s a cool dude now. So, it’s good to have your lead man to be a guy that I can throw middle fingers at and he understands that they are jesters of kindness. Hahaha! But another thing that’s cool is some of the guys in the maintenance crew are bikers. This is a huge plus for me. To be able to talk and relate with these guys and be some what on the same level. Gary is one of those guys. He’s forever working on his sled man. Not that sits breaking down. No. It’s all the customization he’s always doing. This man lives and breaths his bike. Everyday it seems when he’s coming in, he starts the morning with some sort of bottle coffee and what he’s done in his garage to his bike the previous evening. The man literally loves his bike. This is not a hobby to this guy. It’s his life and I dig it.

32

So, see...This is a pretty good job. If you can relate with the crew on something that is better then talking about motorcycles I don’t care to know it. Don’t forget the stories of road rash! They are the battles scares of the two wheeled life. We all know that riding bikes is just a step away from heavens or hell’s gate. Giving the reaper a high five isn’t something we want to do and close calls to meeting him may coming with being a biker but that’s why, us bikers live for the thrill. It’s a great life! Bikes and being able to talk about bikes. That’s a great way to pass the hours at work and it beats talking about sports any day of the week to me. I used to hear all that blah blah blah about basketball or football at my old job and all I wanted to do was split both wrist and just bleed out. I couldn’t give a rat’s ass about some multimillionaire who won’t stand for our flag and some ball game they’re playing. That gives me all the more reason to flip the channel. I just can’t relate. The ball went in a hole. The ball went in to a basket. A ball went over a field goal...Big deal. Want my attention? Speaking my language. A big v-twin roaring pipes, bug guts to the teeth, and twisting the throttle back. Hell Yeah!!! Now, that’s something to talk about! Big Ed (2Timer)

Motorcycle Fatalities declined Nationwide in 2017

October 8, 2018

On Wednesday, October 3rd, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) released its preliminary report on 2017 traffic fatalities. After two consecutive years of rising fatalities, 2017 saw a 1.1% decrease nationwide in overall traffic fatalities. Motorcycle fatalities, which also increased in both 2015 and 2016, saw a 3.1% decrease in 2017. That is certainly welcomed news. It is important to point out that the report represents the preliminary data. We will be able to better identify trends and causative factors in the next couple of months after NHTSA releases its full report on traffic fatalities, as well as its annual report that specifically analyzes motorcycle crashes and fatalities. However, what we are once again seeing in this year’s preliminary report is that motorcycle fatalities continue to trend up or down with overall traffic fatalities. In 2017 motorcycle fatalities represented 14% of all traffic fatalities. That is where we have been for the past ten years regardless of increases or decreases in the number of traffic fatalities, changes in the number of registered motorcycles and other motor vehicles, or fluctuations in vehicle miles traveled. When the additional reports are released in the upcoming months, we will report on their findings and compare those findings with past reports to identify crash and fatality trends, as well as causative factors contributing to both motorcycle crashes and fatalities. As always, if you have any questions or comments concerning this information or any other matter regarding either motorcycle safety or laws affecting riders, please feel free to contact me. 11 November 2018

History of Veterans Day World War I – known at the time as “The Great War” - officially ended when the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919, in the Palace of Versailles outside the town of Versailles, France. However, fighting ceased seven months earlier when an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, between the Allied nations and Germany went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. For that reason, November 11, 1918, is generally regarded as the end of “the war to end all wars.”

In November 1919, President Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day with the following words: "To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations…"

Armistice Day became a legal federal holiday in the United States in 1938. In the aftermath of World War II and the Korean War, Armistice Day became Veterans Day, a holiday dedicated to American veterans of all wars.

Good Tymes Club continued from page 6 35th Anniversary & T-shirt Palooza

Saturday, 26 August Rocky Mount, NC Horace Joyner, owner of The Good Tymes Club was pretty excited about being a host location for the T-shirt palooza benefit. He started planning right away, making contacts and lining up people for help the day of the event and getting bands. He went out and bought grills to raffle off, he attended events around the area to promote the event. He drove around talking to companies about being sponsors and donating prizes. Sadly, Horace passed away suddenly and we didn’t know if the event would ever happen at Good Tymes. A couple of close friends of Horace’s came forward and told Horace’s wife, Barbara, that he would want it to go on and be the biggest event ever! So, friends and family came together, made plans, set goals, and they set out on a mission to make it happen...in Horace’s memory! ...and they did! This was an amazing accomplishment! Bikers, family and friends coming together and everyone chipping in, donating their time. They prepared the grounds and the bandstand for the event. Followed up where Horace had left off and contacted businesses about sponsoring the event and donating prizes. They cooked the food, manned the tables, sold the raffle tickets, helped with the bar duties, and collected money from donors. It was a lot of work by many people and over $27,000 was raised! Horace would be so proud of all of his friends for the work they did to raise money for the charities that meant the world to him, MDA, St. Judes and S.E.A.M.! This year marked The Good Tymes Club’s 35th Anniversary. Many of you have visited Good Tymes at some point in your life. You have met Horace and his dad, who started the the business. Horace’s parents were all about giving and they loved the MDA and St. Judes. Horace followed in their footsteps and raised money for them for many, many years. If you ever had the oportunity to talk to Horace about his parents or the charities that meant so much to him, he would tell you how great those charities are and that his parents gave him that “giving gene” and he would tell you through tears of joy. This event was an amazing homage to Horace through hard work and dedication from his friends and family! He would have been so proud of what everyone did to raise money for his beloved charities! Thank you to all of you who gave of your time, effort, muscles, money, sweat, and tears!

We Say Good Bye

Horace Joyner

28 Dec 1958 - 2 July 2018 Horace Lee Joyner, age 59, passed away on Monday, July 2, 2018. Born in Nash County, NC on December 28, 1958, he was the son of Wiley Burrell Joyner, Jr. and Marie Smith Joyner. Horace Joyner, owner of The Good Tymes Club in Rocky Mount for 35 years, had a heart of gold. Always wanting to help people. He gave of himself every day. He supported many charities and organizations in our community. Horace loved to raise money for for St. Jude and MDA! Horace told me many times, through tears, how these were his his mom and dad’s favorite charities and how they instilled that in him...to give and help others. Horace did just that, many times over! Horace was an icon in the biker realm, a legend in the human world, and friend to everyone. Godspeed to you Horace! Horace will be dearly missed, but his uplifting quote, “Everybody have a blessed day” will never be forgotten by anyone who ever met him!

A Weathered Soul

For Our Brothers & Sisters Who have fallen---–

Some look for answers in a blunt And others in a bottle I find it on a two lane With a twisted throttle Each has given me a weathered soul Broken down in many ways Jaded by the days of old Now the years and miles just slip away What I find within the wind I could never give away It’s the spirit of my weathered soul That lets me ride another day Gone but not forgotten Are the days that’s jaded me They’ve brought me to this place and time And the kind of man I want to be The years of the blunt and bottle Have come and gone many years ago The wind and ride replace them It’s now the best and only life I know

the good news! Redeemed House Biker church Jesus Riders In the Gospels, “The good News” is The answer to a bad situation,a situation that we believe we ourselves can overcome. No matter what ways we come up with in our own efforts is a deception that only prolongs the true answer. The “bad situation” is “I” want to do things my way, period. We want to worship ( love the three gods of “Me, Myself, and I”) and that is a power that controls us and shapes our destinies. That choice to go down our own road only leads to an relentless indifference to the pain of others, see we think by pursuing our needs others will benefit but there is an underlying motive we don’t want to confess, the reality is we are looking for a return of what I need and want (our sin nature selfishness, amen) This is the road we choose ,we cannot over come the power of it, unless we see another way . Insanity is defined as “ a weakness of mind that releases a person from legal responsibility”. It is insane to believe that one can not be held accountable for their actions. We truly reap what we sow! When i do things my way i reap the control of my own destiny , and that my Brothers and Sisters is NOT Freedom! Yes we are free to do what we want, but let me ask you ,and truthfully answers this question, ”How’s that working for ya?” The good news here in all of this, is grace “God’s Grace.” Have you heard of it? It is not new, it has been God’s good news from the beginning ! This is the location of a “Crossroads” for life, ”Freedom” to make a change of direction of self to Salvation, a “Deliverance from self destruction.” Grace for me is this understanding “God sees and looks upon me as though I have never sinned, I need faith to believe that , God created faith for us from even before the beginning and presented faith to us as Himself the Gift for us to place our faith in Him, His Son Jesus.

Then God killed Himself, sacrificing the payment of our debt . That is a love that right now after that statement is really really indescribably a place of complete suspended stillness of having a gift presented to me that I never deserved, and CANNOT REFUSE when I accept Jesus by faith “that this IS the way” If I choose to accept the truth of this in Him, Jesus will graciously guide me along the road free from all the false gifts of this worldly addictions, and be free in Christ to have His Grace to do His will and not my own way. “God, thank You for giving us the free gift of Your Awesome faith “JESUS” I place my faith in Him, thank You Jesus for carrying me to Mt. Calvary, and Dying in my place, so I can live for You down the road now and in eternity in the name of You, Jesus.” “Now let’s ride ! for Jesus!
